BALLYLONGFORD IS SHINING BRIGHT FOR CHRISTMAS

The Ballylongford Tidy Towns Committee are to be sincerely and highly commended for the marvellous lights that they have erected all around the village in preparation for the Christmas season. A very well supported fundraising drive recently brought in the necessary funds to help the committee to purchase the wonderful Christmas lights that are on display all around the village, but the committee are still hoping that people will support them as they are now busy organising a 5k/10K walk which will go ahead on St Stephen’s Day next. But pride of place on last weekend was the big switch on of the fabulous Christmas Tree Lights which is erected at the entrance to St Michaels Church. So after Vigil mass on Saturday evening last a huge crowd gathered at the Church gate where the committee treated everybody to Mulled Wine, Mince Pies, and other novelties, while M.C. and local Kerry County Councillor entertained the audience. The school children sang traditional hymns to add that special Christmas feeling eventhough the Festive season was still a fortnight away. Then the moment that everybody had so anxiously awaited for, had eventually arrived. Sandra Enright a 6th class student from St Olivers Primary School who was picked by virtue of an open draw amongst all the pupils that are attending the school. Sandra proudly and officially hit the switch and lit the fabulous tree. Indeed the lights now on the Bridge and on all the Poles and railings around the village are very nice and again sincere thanks to a very hard working Tidy Towns Committee who deserve our thanks and credit for all their wonderful work.

A massive Christmas bingo will be held in the Tintean Theatre on Sunday 27 December at 2pm . There will be a prize fund of up to €5,000 to be won with the main jackpot at €1,000. All enquiries 068 28003. The Ballybunion Bingo enters its 40th year in 2016 so to celebrate this occasion a mega Bingo will be held at Christmas, Easter, Summer and Halloween in 2016 with a total prize fund of €20,000 on offer. All proceeds go towards the Tintean Theatre who are currently in the process of putting in a smoking shelter, new car park lighting, and new lighting within the building.

FESTIVE FUN CHRISTMAS 5K IN BALLYDUFF

Want to work off that Christmas turkey? Or all those Cadbury’s Roses? Then come along for an hour of fun, frolics and fitness! All this and you'll be supporting a great cause - The Irish Cancer Society. “Every year, my family and I organise a 5k walk/run on the 26th of December in aid of the Irish Cancer Society. The event is in its fourth year and to date we have raised approx €15,000 for the charity. The walk/run was a great family occasion with children and adults of all ages braving the weather to walk or run. We just want to get people out, have fun and raise some funds along the way.” “These days everyone has known or loved someone who lost their fight with cancer. We are asking people to walk/run to raise funds for people who are still fighting this disease and for their families. But we can’t do this without your help and support.” Both the walk and the run will begin in ‘The Square’ in Ballyduff village with the route following a ‘ring’ of the village. We hope to start at 11am. Refreshments available after the event in Lowe’s Bar Ballyduff. Sponsorship cards are still available by contacting Gillian on 086 3248816 or you can find us on our Facebook page called ‘Festive Fun 5k’ for further information. Come along on St. Stephen's Day and support our annual event! Gillian Harrington

IPAD FOR COWS WINS TOP TECHNOLOGY AWARD

iPad for Cows Wins Top Technology Award & Dairymaster Sweeps Winners Board at National Agribusiness Awards • Dairymaster CEO Dr Edmond Harty named Inaugural winner of Agribusiness Leader Award. • Dairymaster’s Swiftflo Commander (“iPad for Cows”) wins Agribusiness Use of Technology Award. • Dairymaster wins Equipment & Machinery Agribusiness of the Year. • Dairymaster wins Dairy Agribusiness of the Year. Dairymaster, the Kerry based globally focused hi-tech dairy manufacturing company, was announced as the winner of the top technology award at the national Agribusiness Awards recently for its new ground breaking technology, the Swiftflo Commander, known as the “iPad for cows”. The iPad for dairy cows (the Swiftflo Commander) is the latest innovation from the R&D focused Dairymaster. This device is the new brain of the milking parlour controlling everything to do with milking, feeding and animal health. Using the latest touchpad technology it allows the dairy farmer to control each milking unit and it ensures that the farmer has in one place all the information necessary to most effectively manage the herd. It saves the busy farmer time, money and effort. The night was a record breaking night for Dairymaster as they swept the board at the prestigious Agribusiness Awards ceremony. Dairymaster CEO Dr Edmond Harty was announced as the inaugural winner of the Agribusiness Leader Award. This national award recognises an individual who has made a significant contribution to Ireland’s agribusiness industry. An independent panel of recognised and expert Judges representing Ireland's agribusiness industry chose Dr Harty as the winner of this prestigious award. To top an already great night Dairymaster was also named the Equipment & Machinery Agribusiness of the Year winner and Dairy Agribusiness of the Year.

TARBERT THEATRE PLAYERS PRESENT ‘DIARMY’ IN EARLY 2016

Dear me! It's Diarmy! All roads will lead to Tarbert Community Centre the last weekend in January, and to St John's Theatre, The Square, Listowel the first weekend in February. The cast are busy preparing to bring a new play to the stage. Diarmy is written and directed by Mary Lavery Carrig. Tarbert's "motley crew" are an enthusiastic band of actors. Prepare to be impressed. The newly formed amateur drama group, the Tarbert Theatre Players, have been in rehearsal since September. The sage set is being built, the costumes are being prepared, the music is being devised, and the lines are being learned off by heart. The cast and crew look forward to taking to the stage. Pictured below are some of the cast in rehearsal. Don't miss it!

Speaking at the awards ceremony last evening Dr Harty said; “Winning these awards has topped a really superb year for Dairymaster. We continue to grow and add new customers in new markets around the world. We are proud to say that Dairymaster technologies are changing the way dairy farms are operating around the world. These awards recognise the contribution that our products make to the international reputation of Ireland as an innovator in the agri-food sector. Ireland has carved out a global niche for itself as a vibrant, top quality, sophisticated player in the international agribusiness sector and Dairymaster is proud to be part of what drives that standard. This year we have launched a number of disrupter technologies for dairy farmers that are driving down the costs of production, saving the farmer time and money and maintaining the highest standards in animal health. In 2016 Dairymaster will continue to focus on growing international markets and on maintaining a strong pipeline of new technologies. Farmers are smart at seeing the big picture. Even at a time when global prices for dairy products are soft farmers know that investing in their farms makes real sense and will help to future proof their farms. ”

KERRY ASSOCIATION LONDON Just a quick seasonal note to all our members and supporters to wish you all the best for Christmas and the New Year. It has been a year of mixed emotions for the association. We were all deeply saddened on the passing of the

great Christy Kissane in October. He was a leading light in the Irish community in London and his loss will felt for a long time to come. The committee pass on their condolences to the Kissane and Roche families and thank everyone who turned out for the funeral in London and Kerry. On a more positive note, the association continues to grow, and remains the most-active county association in London. Big events, like the annual dinner dance and golf day continue to raise large amounts of money which is distributed to worthy causes in London and Kerry. Darkness into Light is one of the biggest Irish community charity events in London and is a credit to the team behind it and their hordes of volunteers that make it one of the highlights of the year, not just for the association, but the wider community too and plans are already at an advanced stage for the 2016 and third edition of this event. Congratulations to Gerry Rochford, the newly elected Kerry Person of the Year, and to our London Rose Aisling Hillary who did trojan charity work at home and abroad this year. Our Annual General Meeting will take place on Friday January 29th. A more detailed letter will be sent to all members, by Secretary Tara Cronin, nearer the event but it will double as a delayed Christmas drinks and we encourage all members to attend the meeting and all supporters are welcome to the after party. It will take place in the Kingdom Bar in Kilburn. Finally, on behalf of the Kerry Association London I wish you all the best for Christmas 2016 and look forward to working with you all in the 2016.

MIKEY COSTELLOE RIP: The death has occurred of Mikey Costelloe, Clash, Causeway. Mikey and his brother Pat made history on October 14th 1973 when they lined out on opposite sides in the County Senior Hurling Championship Final with Mikey at full forward for Causeway and Pat at midfield for Ballyduff. Mikey also played hurling with Lady’s Walk, football with Ballyconry & Ballyduff and the famous Clashmealcon Football Team that won the St. Brendan’s Board Football Championship in the 1970’s. This famous victory was commemorated in a song and this was often sung by Mikey which was his party piece. Sympathy is extended to his family. “God rest his gentle soul”. NOREEN O’CARROLL RIP: Sympathy is extended to the O’Carroll family, Ardoughter, Ballyduff on the death of Noreen whose sons John (RIP), Mike & Anthony gave sterling service to the native Ballyduff.

LADYS WALK HURLING CLUB The Club extends deepest sympathy to the family of Mikey Costello, Clashmealcon, who passed away recently. Mikey played hurling with Ladys Walk in the 60’s & 70’s and captained the team in 1970. He also hurled with Causeway for a number of years and lined out at full forward in the 1973 County Final, when they finished runners up to Ballyduff. He returned to Ladys Walk in the late 70s and played his last game with us in the 1979 County Intermediate Championship Semi Final. Ar dheis de go raibh a anam.

MATCH RESULT Tarbert bowed out of this year’s North Kerry championship following a heavy defeat by a much stronger and well organised Brosna team. Played in Listowel Tarbert’s opening ten minutes were promising with excellent points from Micheal Normile and Ger O’Sullivan to leave Tarbert trailing three two after fifteen minutes. Brosna then hit a purple patch and got five unanswered points before Tarbert’s Ger O’Sullivan reduced the deficit to eight three at half time. Tarbert were under pressure but nobody could have foreseen the manner in which Brosna excelled and Tarbert capitulated in the second half. Nothing went Tarbert’s way and every long range effort by Brosna were straight over the bar. Brosna were up eleven three half way through the second half and then two goals put Tarbert out of sight. A consolation goal by Donal Leahy and a point by Mark Buckley late in the game was Tarbert response. Final score Brosna 2-14 Tarbert 14. Congratulations to Brosna on reaching their first final where they take on Listowel in Moyvane next Sunday. Team: Jamie Diggins, Jason Wren, Shane Enright, Danny Wren, Micheal Carrig, Ambrose Lanigan, Daniel O’Connor, Kevin Enright (captain), Conor Flavin, Micheal Normile, Mark Buckley, Shane O’Connor, Ger O’Sullivan, Donal Leahy, Andrew Doherty, Sean Carrig, Finbarr Carrig, Patrick Healy, Michael Heaphy, Noel Kennedy, Evan Allen, Brendan Garvey and Shea McDonnell. With the effort that has been made by the players and management over the past two months, Tarbert did not deserve such a loss, but must pick themselves up for next year, as the team is young and they have a bright future. The players would like to thank their manager Mike Wren, selectors Kieran Walsh and Gerald O’Sullivan and especially team trainer Danny Wren for all their efforts throughout the year. AGM Tarbert GAA Senior Club Annual General Meeting (AGM) Please note that the AGM of the Senior Club takes place on Sunday, January 3. Any motions or nominations must be with the Club Secretary Kevin Enright on or before Sunday December 19.

Informative talk for parents of Listowel A.C. athletes: Listowel AC held a very successful talk last Saturday on the Role of Parents in Supporting Athletes. The talk was very productive and informative for parents and was well attended. Parents left with plenty of food for thought and ways, information and ideas in how to support their child in Athletics. The talk also reminded us all as parents to ask our athletes what they were looking from their parents in how to support them. Thanks to our speaker who gave their time up to bring the talk to us. Thanks to Listowel Community Centre for the venue. Training: A big turnout by Listowel AC athletes last Saturday where training was held indoors in the Community Centre due to the inclement weather.

The younger group at 10am practiced there relays for up coming events and also focused on running technique. The older athletes followed afterwards with both the middle and distance groups going through Hurdle drills, mobility, core strength and accelerations.

LISTOWEL BADMINTON

The Listowel Badminton Club held their Christmas Quiz night out at John B. Keane's on Friday night last at an event that had a very good turnout with Club vice president Mark Loughnane, being a more than competent M.C. It proved to be a most enjoyable occasion. The Listowel Club Person of 2015 was also announced on the night and this prestigious award went to American girl Miss Rita McCarthy who is very proud of her Duagh roots.

The citation on Miss McCarthy read as follows; Rita McCarthy; Rita, a New York native who has settled in Ireland having a rich heritage of Irish and Duagh blood. She decided to try the game of Badminton and what an acquisition this proved to be for Listowel when Rita decided to join the local club. She is truly a work ethic, no job too small for her---no job too large for her. She has attended college in Limerick and is now working in Limerick but constantly makes the journey to Listowel in the height of Winter for training and for matches and for anything related to the sport of Badminton. Her love for our sport knows no bounds and she truly lives for the game. Listowel Tournament weekend; The Listowel Club host their annual tournaments on the weekend of January 9/10th next. The Saturday programme for divisions 1&2 will cater for players from many Counties and also the masters competition, over 45, will be played on the Saturday. The Sunday programme is for all Kerry affiliated players for divisions 3,4 and 5 and these events draw players from all over the County, indeed from Tarbert to Portmagee. Local club players are asked to enter as soon as possible. Entry forms are now available at Club level. These Listowel tourrnaments, which commenced in 1972 are the longest running club events in Irish Badminton.

LISTOWEL BADMINTON

Listowel U14s played Tralee Whites in terrible weather conditions in Tralee on Saturday. Our pitch was unplayable so Tralee graciously offered to host the game on their all weather pitch. Despite playing with a strong wind in the first half we failed to find our rhythm and found ourselves well behind at half time in spite of superb last ditch tackles by Kevin Lowney and John Carmody, in his first start at fullback. However in the second half we played aggressive, controlled rugby into the teeth of the gale. Big carries by Oisin Horgan and Murtie Moriarty brought us to the Tralee line but we failed to execute our opportunities. Hooker, Conor Ferris managed to find second rows Ryan Large and Kian Dowling with his lineout throws in spite of the strong crosswind. Cale Sweeney, Aaron Mulvihill and Ethan O’Connor began to dominate the breakdown and provide quality ball for our backs. Scrumhalf, Shane Healy was our best player on the day. He tackled bravely, carried repeatedly and linked well with the backs. In spite of the appalling conditions, centres, Joseph Murphy the ever forceful Denis Dowling succeeded in moving the ball effectively to wingers Shaun Hunt and Conor Mannion. The outstanding hospitality of our hosts, Tralee, helped to make it a most enjoyable outing in spite of the wind and rain. FIXTURES: Kieran Corridan Intermediate Cup Final Ballydonoghue v Clounmacon on Saturday December 19th @ 2pm in Listowel.

RESULTS: NK Div1 Minor C'Ship final Ballydonoghue 4-11 Listowel 2-11. Ballydonoghue made it two in a row minor championship wins when the they overcame a gallant Listowel side in Ballylongford on Sunday last. This most entertaining game turned out to be a much closer affair than some might have anticipated with Listowel giving the division one county league winners a run for their money. Listowel's Sam Tarrant opened the scoring with a point after two minutes while Kieran Lynch got Ballydonoghue off the mark a minute later. There was little between the sides in the early stages, until Ballydonoghue got a rub of the green when Jack Behan shot was deflected into the bottom corner of the Listowel net giving goalkeeper Mike McCarthy no chance after eight mins. Minutes later Listowel's Callum Finnegan slipped in behind the Ballydonoghue defence and latched on to a great pass before rounding the Ballydonoghue goalkeeper to bring Listowel right back into the game. Listowel were firing on all cylinders now and were taking the game to Ballydonoghue with wing back Niall Collins breaking up several Ballydonoghue attacks. Both sides then exchanged points before Brian Mason, Darragh Sheehy and Jack Foley combined before the latter finished to the Listowel net. Listowel then kicked three on the trot, two from the boot of full forward Sam Tarrant. Ballydonoghue replied with points from Kieran Lynch (2) and Jack Foley. Approaching the 25min there was little to choose between the sides but then Listowel's centre forward Jack Wall went on a solo run 35m out from the Ballydonoghue goal easily ripping through the Ballydonoghue defence before blasting to the bottom corner of the net. Listowel kicked two more points without reply before half time to give them a two point advantage 2-7 to 2-5 at half time. Ballydonoghue came out all guns blazing in the second half and were a point to the good after six mins after scores from Darragh Sheehy, Kieran Lynch and Jack Behan. It took a great individual effort from Listowel's Sam Tarrant after 10 mins to open their second half account. Scores were coming hard and fast for Ballydonoghue now and with Micheál Foley coming more and more into the game, making those telling runs into the heart of the Listowel defence, finishing with the score of the match from in front of the stand with the outside of the boot swinging it in between the posts. The game was beginning to slip from Listowel and when Brian Ó Seanacháin hit his trade mark diagonal ball to Brian Mason, who deftly flicked on to Jack Foley who made no mistake for his second goal. The writing was on the wall now and Ballydonoghue drove on from there, registering their fourth goal after a Jack Foley shot came back off the upright to the well placed Jack Behan who took full advantage of his chance. To be fair Listowel never dropped their heads and kicked three more points before the final whistle, but those two second half goals for Ballydonoghue were to be the difference between the sides at the end. Ballydonoghue 4-11 Listowel 2-11. Team: Cian Mahony, Donal Doyle, Jack O Connor, Kieran O Connell (captain), Micheál Foley (0-1), Jason Foley, William Kissane, Brian Ó Seanacháin, Kevin O Donnell, Kieran Lynch (0-5), Daragh Sheehy (0-1), Shane Kennelly, Jack Behan (2-2), Jack Foley (2-2), Brian Mason Subs: Paddy Kissane, Joseph Lynch (played), Daniel Power(played), Stephen Mason, Michael Dee, Michael Gogarty (played), Liam Kissane (played), Mike Dee (played),Conor Horgan (inj), Jack Goulding (inj) TEAM PHOTO: Photo from last Sunday's NK historic Minor Final are available from John Stack, to purchase these contact 0876020990.

Such was the response to the motion that it hit the national airwaves during the past

76

week, airing on Morning Ireland and on Kerry Radio, together with rte,ie. The following is an excerpt from rte.ie:

“A motion from Kerry will go before next year’s GAA Annual Convention aimed at returning all live broadcast Championship matches to free-to-air television. Croke Park took the decision two years ago to sell rights for live hurling and football games to Sky Sports, opening up the market to satellite broadcasters for the first time. Sky have broadcast games from the past two Championships, including All-Ireland quarter-finals, but many GAA fans have hit out at the move. On Monday night the Kerry County Board passed a motion calling on all games to be kept on free-to-air, non-subscription stations. The motion put forward by the Beale club and presented by Maurice Mannix reads: “At the conclusion of the current TV broadcast rights contract, that all televised games be available on free to air TV.” That contract comes to an end following the conclusion of the 2016 season and the GAA will be under pressure from some quarters to freeze out Sky. “The feeling is strong on the ground over this,” explained Kerry County Board Chairman Patrick O’Sullivan, who presided over Monday night’s convention. “Not everyone is able to get to games and for those people, radio and television are their main way of staying in touch with what’s happening in the GAA. You have to see how people in some parts of the country look at this. On the western seaboard it’s very different to Dublin, where the economic upturn has been a lot faster. The decision to deal with Sky was taken when money was continuing to get a lot tighter for people." Kerry GAA chiefs first suggested that they bring the matter up with Croke Park’s ruling Management Committee for discussion. But such was the feeling among delegates, that a vote was taken and now the Beale motion will be discussed at Annual Congress in Carlow next February.” The AGM of Beale GAA Club will take place on Saturday, 16thJanuary, in Ballybunion Community Centre at 8.30pm. Nominations for officers of the club and motions for the AGM to be submitted to the Secretary by Jan 9th.

NORTH KERRY GAA P.R.O. MAIREAD O’SULLIVAN

Mobile: 086 3689061 | Email: osullivan_mairead@yahoo.com NORTH KERRY CHAMPIONSHIP Sponsored by McMunns Bar & Restaurant Ballybunion Semi Final: Tarbert 1.04 -v- Brosna 2.15 This game was played at Championship pace from the throw in, played in Frank Sheehy Park, Listowel on Sunday last. And for most of the first half Tarbert held there ground with Brosna, but Brosna on this occasion had too much in the tank and their drive and pace shone through and it will make for an exciting final with Listowel Emmets. Will the current All Ireland Junior Champions for the first time gain a North Kerry Championship or will the seasoned Emmets men add another Eamon O Donoghue cup to their trophy cabinet. It was Brosna on the scoreboard within the 1st minute with a free taken by Tom McGoldrick, the play went up and down the pitch until the 4th minute when Tarberts Micheal Normile split the posts, it was Tarberts Gerald O Sullivan who showed some excellent skill with two well taken long distance points from play in the 7th and 29th minutes to finish Tarberts scoring in the first half but Brosna on the other hand had Tom McGoldrick keeping the board ticking over converting three more frees in the 5th, 12th and 22nd minutes but the difference came when Brosna hit a purple patch scoring three quick points from play in the 22nd 23rd and 26th minutes from the boots of Adam Barry, Don McAuliffe and Kieran O Donnell half time score Brosna 0.07 v Tarbert 0.03. Second half and Brosna really turned on the style hungrier and faster to every ball, again it was McGoldrick who opened the scoreboard with a converted free in the 1st minute which was to be Brosna last free of the game and from here on in nothing could stop the running game Brosna brought to Tarbert. In the 7th minute Kieran O Donnell from the dressing room side of the pitch kicked a long range point. McGoldrick a minute later got in on the action with a point from play, Adam Barry added a second point to his tally in the 9th minute, but the move of the game came from Adam Barry Brosna, when Tarbert were in possession a pass laid off to Tarberts Jason Wren who was waiting for the ball to land when Adam Barry came charging up the pitch from behind took the ball, moved at pace up the field to lay it off to his captain Jonathan ODonnell who rattled the Tarbert net for the first goal of the game in the 14th minute of the second half. It took Tarbert until the 18th minute of the half to register a reply from the boot of Ambrosse Lanigan but Brosna were clinical and never let up scoring their second goal and adding four more points before the final whistle, a late goal from Tarberts Donal Leahy was to little to late. Full score Brosna 2.15 v Tarberts 1.04 FINAL: Sunday 20th December @ 2pm Venue: Moyvane Listowel Emmets -v- Brosna In the event of a replay Sunday 27th December is the date. This most entertaining game turned out to be a much closer affair than some might have anticipated, with Listowel giving the division one county league winners a run for their money. Listowel's Sam Tarrant opened the scoring with a point after two minutes while Kieran Lynch got Ballydonoghue off the mark a minute later. There was little between the sides in the early stages, until Ballydonoghue got a rub of the green when Shane Kennelly's shot was deflected into the bottom corner of the Listowel net giving goalkeeper Mike McCarthy no chance after eight mins. Scores were coming hard and fast for Ballydonoghue now and with Michael Foley coming more and more into the game, making those telling runs into the heart of the Listowel defence, finishing with the score of the match from in front of the stand with the outside of the boot swinging it in between the posts.
