FINANCIAL BOOST FOR LISTOWEL WRITERS’ WEEK 2016 RING OF KERRY CHARITY CYCLE – CHARITIES ANNOUNCED

The 10 main charities who will benefit from the 2016 Ring Of Kerry Charity Cycle have been announced today at a photo call in Killarney. The 10 Kerry based charities are South West Counselling services, St Joseph's Nursing Home, Killorglin, Aras Mhuire Listowel, St Ita’s & St Joseph's Special School Tralee, Pieta House Kerry, Kerry Branch Irish Kidney Association, Recovery Haven Cancer Respite, St.Francis Special School, Derrynane Inshore Rescue, Talbot Grove, Castleisland. Speaking at Wednesday’s photo call, Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle PRO Cathal Walshe said; “The charities were chosen after an application process that began before Christmas, and we were genuinely overwhelmed with the number of submissions received. It was hard to choose from so many deserving causes and we would like to thank all the unsuccessful applicants for their efforts. The chosen charities provide fantastic support to the people of Kerry and will benefit hugely from the money they receive from this year’s Fundraising effort. Last year over €1.85 million was raised and shared amongst the 9 chosen charities as well as 28 smaller charities in Kerry”. Now in its 33rd year, this fundraising cycle to date has raised over €10.6million for charities that benefit all the communities across the county of Kerry. Michael Moriarty, of St. Josephs Home Killorglin, explained how important the Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle is in their fundraising efforts, “St. Joseph’s Home provides vital care for the elderly in the Mid and South West Kerry area. In order to maintain the high standard of care offered and meet HIQA requirements, in 2017 we need to convert existing 3 bed wards to single rooms, which will require significant investment. Without the financial support raised through the Ring of Kerry Cycle, this will not be feasible. It is thanks to this one day fundraising event that we are able to keep our doors open and our valued staff can continue to serve the community”. Reminding interested participants how this year’s registration process will work, Cathal continued “This year the charities will have a limited amount of places to fill and we cannot reiterate enough that the best chance of getting a place is to register your interest online. Registration for the lottery closes on the 31st January, leaving less than 3 weeks for people to register, I would suggest that all interested parties get moving and get registered!” This year’s Cycle will take place on Saturday July 2nd.

Listowel Writers Week is to receive €20,000 for 2016 – Deenihan Fine Gael TD Jimmy Deenihan has welcomed the announcement by the Minister for Transport, Tourism and Sport, Paschal Donohoe, that €20,000 has been allocated for Listowel Writers Week in 2016. This is part of Failte Ireland‘s national funding of just over €1.8 million for 23 key national festivals and events. “Listowel Writers Week is a hugely popular event in Kerry and further afield. This event has grown in recent years and is attracting more and more tourists to the area. Funding of €20,000 will help to grow the festival further and to continue to plan for the future. “Writers’ Week in Listowel is an intimate literary festival offering a platform for both emerging and established authors to present their work. The core of the festival is a series of literary workshops running over three days which are directed by experienced authors/teachers and cover a range of genres such as creative writing, journalism, memoir, crime, fiction and poetry. The festival also features readings, book launches, exhibitions and more”. “There was a 14% increase in overseas visits to Ireland for the first eleven months of 2015 and the most recent figures show that revenue in the sector has increased by 16% to €4.2 billion. A significant factor in this growth is the festivals and events on offer in all parts of the country. “The Government has set an ambitious target of attracting 10 million visitors to Ireland and having 250,000 people employed in the tourism sector by 2025. Continued growth of festivals and increasing the offering to tourists will be key in meeting these targets. “In 2016 we will continue to promote all of the festivals on offer around the country, including Listowel Writers Week. “2015 has been an extremely strong year for tourism but it is vital that we maintain our competitiveness and keep our focus on keeping the recovery going in the tourism sector.”

PLANNING APPLICATION SUBMISSION FOR ADVANCED MANUFACTURING FACILITY WELCOME -SPRING

Labour TD, Arthur J Spring welcomes the response by Kerry County Council to a motion submitted for this weeks Tralee Municipal Area meeting clarifying that a planning application was submitted by IDA Ireland on the 23rd December 2015 for the construction of a â‚Ź20 million advanced technology building consisting of a production facililty and office space at the Technology Park, Dromtacker, Tralee.

Deputy Spring states, "Kerry County Council confirmed that planning permission has been applied for in a response to a motion submitted by Labour Councillor, Graham Spring. I welcome this progression as it will promote job creation in Kerry. Tralee was chosen as one of three towns in Ireland to have an advanced manufacturing facility built to promote job creation as part of the Action Plan for Jobs in the region. The submission of a planning permission application by the IDA just prior to Christmas will result in a decision being made by early March." The building of the Facility will create up to 70 construction jobs. The facility itself will have the potential to create 400 jobs in industries identified in the regional strategy. This facility combined with the redrawing of the regional aid map in July 2014 will make Tralee a more attractive destination for investors. Multinational Companies are looking for turnkey premises as getting involved in property development and adaption is not their core competency. I worked extremely hard to promote the redrawing of the regional aid maps after a 14 year span when Kerry was financially unattractive to outside investors. The redrawing and separation from Cork now positions Kerry with the ablility to offer the maximum amount of grants. The combination of the entitlement to maximum grant status and a turn key advanced manufacturing facility will make Tralee an attractive destination for investors and multi-nationals.

LISTOWEL GIRLS RUGBY We have been established for the last three seasons. Last season we were finalists & hopefully we can go one better in this seasons U15 final. The U15 started off with a win against Kilrush back in September. This gave the girls great confidence going in against St Mary's, a team who have a long tradition in girl’s rugby. The rub of the green went to our girls in this great tussle. We moved onto Shannon another famous Limerick club, our girls knew they were in a game it was deadlock for nearly 20 minutes, until a nice move from our backline, from there we stayed ahead against a very experienced side and to keep this journey on track. But our last game was away to current champions Abbeyfeale of which our girls gave a spirited performance to edge out the win against our neighbours. This is a fabulous journey these girls have been on hopefully this will end in fitting final against two great teams. We have girls from Listowel and Tralee areas which has been a fantastic experience for the both clubs. We have girl teams at U15 & U18. This season we have setup U13 in our respective clubs in order to grow girl’s rugby further in Kerry. Please contact Kieran Reilly for more information on girl’s rugby: (087)1341805

THE LOCAL THING You know it's very easy to lose sight of the local thing. We live here most, if not all of the time, and sometimes perhaps we need to go outside and look in to see and appreciate our own area. The strength of the community was proven in the recent sad funeral last week. Moyvane is blessed with many facilities that have been provided by people who give freely and willingly of their time. Con Brosnan Park, the GAA pitch was funded in the early seventies by Moyvane Carnival. Later, in the eighties, the Community Centre was built and paid for by Carnival funding. In the nineties the old Marian Hall was knocked and replaced by a new building that cost in the region of a quarter of a million. This was paid for by funds raised by the Blotto and Bingo and the debt finally cleared by the Moyvane 2000 draw. The hall is available to all organisations in the parish free of charge thanks to Moyvane Bingo and Blotto. In the naughties a committee was formed with the purpose of building a palyground for the little people and in a short time they got on with it and look what we have now, the best playground in North Kerry and West Limerick and perhaps beyond so the local thing does work and with the help of everyone our parish can be a better place. 5K A DAY TO HELP STACKS PLAY The 5k in aid of Daniel, David and Tommy Stack to raise funds for their soccer power wheelchairs is up and running. Starting this coming week there is an opportunity for more of us to get involved in this very worthy fundraiser. Sponsorship cards are available from Noel Stack and Pat Fitzgerald. A gathering at Murhur N.S.at 8.00pm nightly where you will be guided on the specially mapped out route. Even if you are not involved walking or jogging, you may wish to give a donation. KILFLYNN OUTSTANDING SUCCESS St. Teresa’s National School,Kilflynn is still buzzing from the fantastic audience feedback received, following the outstanding Christmas performance that took place in the Tintean Theatre, Ballybunion on Friday 18th December. Sounds of amazement echoed throughout the Tintean as the younger children of the school performed a medley of Christmas songs and poems. The large audience on the night were wowed by a comical performance of‘Straw and Order’, a lawfully good nativity depicting a courtroom scene where donkeys and cows battled for their rights to stay in the sacred manger. The judge was whisked away by the narrator to witness the night’s events first hand. As well as this, the crowd was entertained by a whole school performance of ‘A Magical Christmas Jigsaw’, a lively adaptation of the nativity scene. The audience was treated to a fantastic array of catchy songs and an enchanting script. The children brought the Christmas story to life as the magical jigsaw was pieced together. A MINDFULNESS GUIDE FOR THE FRAZZLED By Ruby Wax

500 years ago no-one died of stress: we invented this concept and now we let it rule us. We might have evolvedto be able to miraculously balance on seven-inch heels, but as far as our emotional development is concerned we're still swimming with the pond scum. If we don't advance our more human qualities then we're doomed evolution-wise to become cyborgs, with an imprint of an 'Apple' where our hearts used to be. Ruby Wax shows us a scientific solution to these modern problems: mindfulness. I know what you're thinking - what if I don't want to stare at a butterfly wing or hear the single ting of a wind chime? My definition of mindfulness isn't about sitting erect on a hillock, legs in a knot, humming a mantra that's probably the phone book sung backwards, it's something that can help us all: learning to notice your thoughts and feelings so you can truly experience life. Outrageously witty, smart and accessible, Ruby Wax shows ordinary people how and why to change for good. With mindfulness advice for relationships, for parents, for children and for teenagers, and a six-week course based on her studies of Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy with Mark Williams at Oxford University, A Mindfulness Guide for the Frazzled is the only guide you need for a healthier, happier life

North Kerry Senior Championship Final DVD’s are available from the Club Secretary Norah Browne.

Emmets Results Listowel Emmets were crowned champions of North Kerry on Saturday last after defeating Brosna in Ballybunion on a score line of 0-9 to 0-6. Emmets put on an absorbing second half performance led by Jamie Barry, Ger McCarthy and man of the match Niall Collins. Brosna dominated much of the first half thanks to Flor McAuliffe and Shane Curtin and led 0-5 to 0-2 at the break, and probably should have been further ahead kicking five wide’s. Emmets came out of the blocks all guns blazing on the resumption with Barry, Collins and McCarthy driving forward with young Niall Collins taking a fine score from play and within 3 minutes Emmets were back on par thanks to two good scores from Kennelly. Brosna put their nose in front for a brief spell thanks to a converted free from Tom McGoldrick but Conor Cox converted from a difficult angle as the game began to turn in Emmets favour as Bryan Sweeney shot for goal deflected but with further points from Cormac Mulvihill and Darragh Leahy ensured victory. The chairman of the board Billy Enright presented the Eamonn O’Donoghue Cup to an elated Emmets captain Ger McCarthy, who played tribute to all involved and made a touching tribute to the late Paddy Curtin. Emmets Team: Keith Hughes, Jamie Barry, Jack McGuire, Shane Quinn, Maurice Whelan, Brendan Guiney, Niall Collins (0-1), Brendan Flavin, Micheal Lynch, Ger McCarthy, Bryan Sweeney, Cormac Mulvihill (0-1) David Sheehy (0-1), Noel Kennelly (0-3, 0-1f), Conor Cox (0-2f). The Sunday programme which catered for Kerry players only in divisions 3,4 and 5 saw a great turnout of players from Tarbert to Valentia Island competing. It proved to be a successful day for the home club especially at div 5

Division 3 Mixed doubles final for the Mary Keane perpetual Shield; Renee Lenehan (Kingdom,Castleisland) and Kieron Crehan (Killarney) defeated Carmel Hudson (Moyvane) and Tom Clear(County,Tralee) 21-14; 18-21; 21-10 Division 4 Mixed final; Susan O'Connell (Iveragh)and Jamie Elliott (Moyvane) defeated Mary Bradley (Kingdom) and Kevin O'Mahoney (Ballyheigue (21-14;21-19 Division 5 Mixed final; Jennifer Murphy (Listowel) and Colm Carroll (Ballyheigue)defeated Karen Lawlor and Andrew Dai (both Listowel) 21-19; 22-20 Those 3 last finals on Sunday provided great fare for all present. Mrs Keane had a passion for the game of Badminton and was one of those along with the late Jimmy Harris and Jim Cody who reformed the Listowel Club in 1962

LISTOWEL RUGBY

Listowel U14s played Tralee in Tralee on Sunday morning. It was one of our best performances to date. Big carries from Oisin Horgan and Denis Dowling kept us on the front foot throughout the game. Energetic support work by our outstanding back row of Cale Sweeney, Murtie Moriarty and Ethan O’Connor created the opportunities to score. They combined superbly for the best move of the match. Murtie Moriarty made a 30 metre break off our scrum and Ethan O’Connor sidestepped a number of tacklers to score in the corner. Our tackling was good and we pressurised the Tralee attack all day. This resulted in a fine intercept try by the maturing centre Joseph Murphy who showed great pace to evade three defenders to touch down. Kevin Lowney nailed the conversion to keep us in the game. Conor Ferris and Aaron

Mulvihill worked hard in the tight exchanges, doing the unseen but necessary work to provide a platform for the backs. Our half backs Shane Healy and Kevin Lowney tackled like lions all day. Shane is one of our smallest players but executed the best tackle of the match when flooring Tralee’s giant Number 8, Kian O’Regan. Another of our smaller players, Daniel McKenna almost scored a late try after a beautiful sidestep but was hauled down short of the line. Overall, it was a very satisfactory team performance. Best on the day were Shane Healy and Murtie Moriarty. Our next match is away to Killorglin this weekend, weather permitting.

U15's Girls Munster League final This game was an epic, with downs and ups and ultimately with a down again in the 6th minute of injury time, the gods were not favourable to our girls in green. If you were to win a Cup for determination, skill, never give up attitude these girls would have collected the cup. The game started with Abbeyfeale making gains towards our girls try line but sustained defensive pressure the opposition knocked on the ball which gave our girls the ball back. We broke the deadlock with Hannah Betts but abbeyfeale came back before half time to lead by 2 tries to 1. The first 15 mins of second half was all abbeyfeale but our girls would not be broken and actually made their way from their own 5 mtr line and scored a second try from Betts again. With this it was down to the ref to decide how long left but it gave abbeyfeale one more attack and killer punch to our girls. Through the leadership of Rebecca Reilly and the forward pack the game plan was plain to see, 'give it to the forwardsand they will go through walls. The forwards were as always the dynamic front row of Mary Murphy carried ball all day, Danica Kelliher throwing darts in the lineout that Phil Taylor would have been proud of and Shauna Mulvihill fearless in the ruck. Behind them where the deadly duo of Aine Enrightand in my opinion hannah betts not because she scored two tries but her attitude to drive at the heart of the abbeyfealedefence and make major yards for her teamates. Then the engine room of muireaan kennelly who for a girl that doesntreliase how effecitve in running with the ball and making big tackles, clare beasley she is the girl who wears her 'heart on her sleeve' and back up all her teamates. Then there is beccareilly with the quick tap repertoire that keep the girls moving forward. Then we turn to the backs at no 9 who selflessly allowed the forwards to do their thing but when the time came would switch the ball out to the backs in order to turn the screw against a formidable opposition, the out half Patricia Scanlon who was calm and collected in her display when the time was needed to order the back line to move up in defence. Inside centre we had the very experienced Kayla Mulvihill who had outstanding runs to the abbeyfeale try line, Outside her was the dangerous and quick Emma Reidy who is gaining confidence with every minute of rugby. The wingers on the day were Deirdre O Halloran who for girls that has only played a handful of games was very comfortamble at the top table of munster girls rugby biggest day, Mary Kate Reidywith her lightening pace down the wing stopped many attacks down her wing with also runs to ease the pressure for her teamates. At full back was the reliable and speedster SadbhGriffin who covered large area of the pitch and was faultless in everything see did. These girls who have now been in two finals and with cruel luck were within a hairs breath of claiming the trophy. Admittedly there were tears but within an hour of the final whistle, these girls are made of stern stuff and have set their sights on the Munster Cup knockout competition. Up next this Saturday v St Mary U15 & U18 (limerick) bring it on.

The eagerly awaited Beale GAA Club members’ trip to Gran Canaria is almost here and players, mentors and supporters set of for a trip of a lifetime to the sunshine on Tuesday, January 19th.

For the past few years, a committee has been busy at work researching and putting together the history of Beale GAA. We have traced the history of football in the parish of Ballybunion back to the 1890s and have been are heartened at the response from many, many people who have shared their stories, photographs and mementos with us. As we near completion of this project, information is still coming in. Plans are in place to publish the book later this year and we are appealing to anyone who has photographs, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks or other information to contact Jimmy Buckley, Liam Browne, Catherine Ellis, Bríd Griffin, Paudie Mulvihill, John Hennessy or Tom Allen in the next few weeks. The DVD of Beale GAA Strictly Come Dancing is now available. Cost €15. DVD may be ordered through the Beale GAA Facebook page or by contacting Bríd Griffin @ 087 6686027 or emailing griffnbrid@gmail.com.

Beale Bord na nOg Beale Bord na nOg have hit the ground running since Christmas. With a big year ahead especially for the under 14’s (more on that at a later date), St Stephens day wren was the first outing. A group of approx 20 players, boys and girls along with members of the committee and trainers gathered at the Bunker Bar to be painted in our war colours of Green and Red. This group then started in the town and woke everyone up to the delightful tunes played by our very talented bunch of musicians. We had bodhrans, accordions, fiddles, concertinas, banjos and tin whistles. After a tour of Sandhill Road, Ballyeigh, Ballyconry, and the Hill, this group retired for the evening to catch their breath and another bunch of worthy players took up the mantle. They travelled up around Beale and ended up at Farrells in Doon for tea and sandwiches. To everyone who took part, the musicians, the parents and trainers, the drivers and the houses who opened their doors and allowed us into their homes and who gave us money, tins of biscuits, boxes of sweets and most importantly a sense of Community that is priceless, Thank You All. On January 8th the Final of the Bernard O’Callaghan North Kerry Championship was played in Stack Park, Ballybunion. Again our Bord na nOg trainers & Committee were on hand to help man the car parks and complement the Senior Club in stewarding the traffic guided by the local Garda Siochana. Some of our Under 16 and Under 14 members were also on hand to entertain the crowd on the day. Mark Hennessy opened proceedings with Amhran na bFhiain and at half time the Trad Group from St. Josephs Secondary School entertained the spectators with accomplished playing. This group consists of boys and girls from Beale, Ballydonoghue and Asdee GAA clubs.

The Awards Night will be held in the Community Centre Friday night the 19th of January and will feature a Surprise Guest.

Brosna started with intent from the throw in driving at the Emmets men in waves of attack. It took Brosna all but 30 seconds to register their first score a free converted by Tom McGoldrick. Brosna went on to score four more points, but kicked 7 wides in the half. Emmets uncharastically seemed a bit unsettled in the first half and only managed two points , a free converted by Connor Cox and a point from play by David Sheehy. The second half and whatever was said in the Emmets dressing room it worked, leading from the front was player/manager Noel Kennelly, who kicked three points, with his team mates adding a further four points in the half. Emmets could do no wrong, Brosna found it difficult to reach the intensity levels that Emmets brought to the pitch and only managed one point from play in the second half from wing forward Tom McGoldrick. Man of the match was presented to Emmets Niall Collins. The Board would like to congratulate Listowel Emmets on their win and thank Beale GAA for hosting the final with such professionalism. Referee Brendan Griffin Clounmacon officiated his first Bernard O Callaghan Senior Football Championship Final and no doubt will officiate many more.
