LISTOWEL CREDIT UNION HELPING LOCAL FAMILIES PREPARE FOR COMMUNION
Communion season is once more nearly upon us in Listowel and it can be an expensive time for parents, adding pressure to already stretched household budgets. It is important that families in the local Listowel area know that the credit union is here to help - whether it is to set up a savings or budget plan in advance of the big event or to assist families with a small modest loan. Listowel Credit Union offers a competitive interest rate for communion loans. Research undertaken by the Irish League of Credit Unions in the past years has found that the average amount of money received by a child for communion is €471, however, according to mummypages.ie this can jump to a whopping €703 per child when parties, gifts and fuss are factored in. In relation to funding the costs of communion and confirmation, 21% of respondents stated that they use credit cards to cover some of the costs of communion. An even more worrying result is that almost one in 8 (12%) families finance at least part of the costs of communion via moneylenders. Most parents encouraged their children to save most of the money given to them for their communion. The great thing about a personal loan at Listowel Credit Union is that there are no hidden fees or transaction charges and credit union interest rates are fair and reasonable and are capped by law. Repayments are calculated on your reducing balance, so you pay less interest with each repayment. Your credit union loan is also insured in the event of your death – subject to terms and conditions - at no direct cost to you. Other lenders charge for this. You can pay off your loan early, make additional lump sum repayments or increase your regular repayments all without a penalty.
ASDEE GAA HAVE ‘STARS IN THEIR EYES’
Asdee GAA will be hosting a ‘Stars in Their Eyes’ fundraiser on Saturday, April 9th, in the Asdee Community Centre, kicking off at 8pm. The red carpet will be rolled out to welcome visitors, while there will also be a heated marquee complete with a bar and big screen, with tea, snacks and other refreshments on offer. Keep an eye on Facebook this week as we reveal the 15 acts from around North Kerry, who will need your votes on the night. Following the crowning of the popular vote and the judges winners, the music and craic will continue to flow. Tickets will cost €15. These tickets will also double as a raffle ticket on the night, giving you the chance to win one of our many attractive spot prizes.
Denis Dillane, Manager of Listowel Credit Union said; “The ethos of the credit union is simple – we are here to offer friendly, accessible financial services in the local community through savings and modest loan services. We would urge anyone who is planning for the costs of communion to call in and speak to us. Listowel Credit union offers its members budgeting and savings advice as well as competitive rates on loans.”

Comóradh 1916. DEATH Parishioners were shocked to learn of the untimely death of Pat Lynch, of Bedford, Listowel and of the Steeple Road, Shanaway, Tarbert. Pat was a wonderful neighbour and his obliging and helpful attitude will be greatly missed. He was a man who possessed great skill in the workings of electrical and mechanical equipment and many neighbours called on his expertise in times of trouble. Pat was waked at his home in Shanaway on Tuesday evening, March 15, with neighbours and visitors calling to pay their respects and also at Lyons Funeral Home, Derry, Listowel, on Wednesday, March 16, from 5pm to 8pm with removal to St. Mary’s Church Tarbert at 8pm. Requiem mass for the repose of his soul was concelebrated on Thursday, March 17, by Fr Padraig Kennelly and Fr. John O’Connor at 11:30am. Pat is survived by His wife Marie, brothers: Tim and Michael, sisters; Maureen, Eileen and Betty; nieces, nephews, father-in-law, sisters-in-law, brothers-in-law, extended family members, neighbours and friends to whom our most sincere sympathy is extended. Internment took place in St Mary’s Cemetery, Tarbert, immediately after Mass. May he Rest in Peace! TARBERT GAA Results & Fixtures : Tarbert seniors opened their county league campaign losing on a scoreline of Tarbert 2-5 Annuscaul 1-12. Played under excellent underfoot conditions in Shannon Park last Sunday it was Tarbert who started brightly with two quick points from Gerald O’Sullivan and Andrew Doherty to put them two up. It took Annuscaul ten minutes to register their first score and this was followed quickly by a James Crean point to level matters. Crean continued to cause havoc to the Tarbert defence and two more points from him plus a long range Jason Hickson free put Annuscaul five two up after twenty minutes. Andrew Doherty and Micheal Carrig responded for Tarbert to pull two back but another point from Hickson put left the score 0-3 to 0-7 in favour of Annuscaul at half time. From the throw in a great ball into Crean who passed onto James Farrell for a goal and the crucial score of the match. This was followed by a period of total dominance by the travelling team and five unanswered points put the up 1-12 to 0-4 after ten minutes of the second half. Tarbert did rally towards the end of the game with goals from Sean Carrig and Donal Leahy but a deserved win and vital two points for Annuscaul. Tarbert play Brosna on Easter bank holiday Monday in Knocknagoshel at 2pm. This is a play off game in the North Kerry league with the winners meeting Castleisland Desmonds in the semi final. Next county league game is away to St. Senan’s on Sunday 3rd April. Tarbert Moyvane minors lost away to Churchill last Friday evening on a scoreline of 3-15 to 2-8. Final league game is away to Castleisland next Saturday at 4pm in a must win game in order to having a chance of qualifying for semi final. ATHEA
ATHEA VIXENS As the county league draws to a close we look back on a very enjoyable and successful season. As always, our approach is to do your best but we want the kids to have fun too. We had our first ever U11 girls. We had U12 and U14 boys with a small number of dedicated, talented boys. We just missed out on the U14 play offs. At U14 girls we had great success, we have some very talented young ladies hence we won our plate competition at Killarney in February and our league will be decided on the last game of the season v St. Mary’s on Tuesday next at 7pm. Our 16s girls worked hard all year and got to the semi-finals of our competition but a very strong Caherciveen dashed our hopes last Saturday. Our 16s boys also had a good season again a small number of dedicated, talented boys. We got to our plate finals and were narrowly defeated by our close rivals Gneeveguilla and of course our league was decided last Sunday on our home game v Gneeveguilla. An exceptional game was played. We were down at half time but hard work and determination won through and we won by 3 points and so winning our league. Well done boys and well done to their young coach Samantha Ahern and a very special thanks to Mr. T. as we call him - Mr. Ger Tarrant, his help at the beginning of the season was invaluable. It was our first year with a Senior team also. A young team that faltered at first but when they started to play, as I knew they could, they started to win and finished on a flurry of winning games, looking forward to next year - a great future ahead and looking forward to coaching ye !!! And so, as you know, we never close the door. Training as normal after Easter. Going forward we have Community Games, School League in Killarney, The Easter school blitz at Listowel. We look forward to the U10s on a Thursday evening, camp during early July and the big event for the U16 boys and girls - We go to Barcelona to participate in Thomas Sola Trophy 2016. A brilliant opportunity for all. We worked for 12 months to raise the funds and would like to thank everyone for their support but we came up short on funds and had to ask for further help and almost everyone helped. So thanks to Ahern Concrete, Kearney’s Bakery, Credit Union, Athea, FloGas, Aughinish, B.C.D. Tralee, Bank of Ireland, AIB, TSB, Leens Hotel, Newtownsandes Co-Op, Adrenalin Sports, David Quaid and MTD Eng, Cork, Hogan’s Concrete, Hunt Office, Feale Oil, Lenihan Drilling, Southwest Autos, McDonnell Haulage, Finnegan’s Restaurant and Bar, Limerick. Helen Kelly Athea Community Centre, Drama Group for allowing us to cater with teas during their productions. Thank You All. RICHMOND BARRACKS 1916 By Mary McAuliffe & Liz Gillis
Richmond Barracks 1916: We Were There – 77 women of the Easter Rising enriches our knowledge of the revolutionary period by telling the history of the 1916 Rising from a more nuanced and balanced perspective, through the lens of these women’s lives and contribution. Containing detailed biographies of the seventy-seven women, this book reveals their background, family, education, class, politicisation and motivation to take part in the 1916 Rising as well as looking at their lives post-Rising and postIndependence. Accompanied by chapters on the fighting of Easter week in each garrison, narrated from the point of view of the women’s involvement, the commitment and depth of the contribution of women to the Rising is rediscovered. This new research and analysis of the women in the 1916 Rising is a welcome addition to the historiography of the period and gives voice to the forgotten Easter Rising women.

LISTOWEL EMMETS
41 Card Drive: takes place every Wednesday night at 9pm in the Clubhouse, come along and bring a friend.
St. Patrick’s Day Parade: We had a fantastic turn out for the parade on St. Patricks Day where the club colours were worn with great pride by young and old! We had our silverware from last year on display and a great afternoon was had by all. Many thanks to everyone that marched with us on the day.
Results: County League Division 2 - Round 1 Glenflesk 1-11 Listowel Emmets 0-16 Our senior footballers got their County League campaign off to a winning start away to Glenflesk on Sunday and as most people expected, it was a tough battle from the word go. Both teams traded wides in the opening exchanges before Emmets talisman Conor Cox side-stepped his marker and sent over the first score of the game. It was the home side who seemed to settle better however and on 9 minutes they took the lead by 0-02 to 0-01. Ger McCarthy who went on to have a fine game at centre half back put the sides level two minutes later before Glenflesk corner back Shane Courtney raced forward and forced a magnificent save from Keith Hughes before Courtney put the rebound over the bar. Darragh Roche put the home side two points up on the quarter mark as both teams went through some good passages of play. Conor Cox cut the deficit to one with a fine long range effort and this game already looked like it would go down to the wire. Over the next five minutes however, it was Glenflesk that took the game by the scruff of the neck as they attacked the Emmets defence in waves but spurned two good goal chances that they really should have finished, either side of a Jeff O'Donoghue point from 35 yards. The Emmets defence tightened up after this scare and Dara Hughes pointed from a tight angle following a great run from wing back Maurice Whelan. David Sheehy cancelled out Darragh Roche's close range free to secure Listowels fifth point of the day as the teams headed for the dressing rooms with the home side leading 0-07 to 0-05.
Listowel came charging out of the blocks at the re-start with an excellent free from Conor Cox and completely took charge of the game over the next 10 minutes, playing some excellent free-flowing football and getting on top all over the pitch. Cox put on an exhibition of point scoring as Aidan Quinn and Bryan Murphy also got in on the act, and Emmets quickly raced into an 0-07 to 0-11 point lead. It wasn't until the 40th minute that the home side threatened the score board when captain Jeff O' Donoghue landed a free to put 3 between the sides but the comeback did not start here. Emmets tacked on four more unanswered scores, 2 of these from Cox and one each from the impressive David Sheehy and Aidan Quinn. Listowel were on top all over the field with Cormac Mulvihill, Tom McCarthy and Jake Moriarty leading the way and it looked like there was no way back for Glenflesk however they got an unlikely lifeline with 7 minutes left on the clock when they were rewarded a penalty. Darragh Roche struck the crossbar from the spot before palming the first of a quick brace over the bar and suddenly the home side were back in the game. Another score soon followed before Roche goaled having cleverly rolling the ball under an on-rushing Keith Hughes and in the blink of an eye this game was on a knife edge. Two more Glenflesk attacks were dealt expertly by the Emmets defence with Jack McGuire and Jake Moriarty standing firm as the clock ticked down and Emmets were handed a well deserved victory. The lads are delighted to get the season off to a winning start and travel to St. Michaels/Foilmore on Easter weekend where another major battle awaits. Final Score: Glenflesk 1-11 Emmets 0-16 North Kerry League Div 3 - Round 1 Clounmacon V Emmets B in Clounmacon on Mar 22nd at 6.30pm

It could be described as a fair result when Beale Seniors drew with St Patrick’s, Blennerville, on Sunday afternoon in the opening round of Division 3 of the County League. It took us a while to settle in a rather physical game as we were guilty of missing chances. Our opponents forged ahead by 1-3 before we got on the scoreboard and then started to pull back the lead, trailing by 1-4 to 0-5 at the short whistle. On the changeover, the teams exchanged points and, with ten minutes remaining, a goal from the penalty spot saw us draw level. We had edged ahead by a point as the clocked ticked away and St Pat’s got the final score to end the game on 1-11 apiece. ASDEE GAA
COUNTY LEAGUE. Asdee 0-13 Cromane 1-8. Our senior footballers opened their Credit Union County Football League Division 5 campaign with a fantastic victory over a fancied Cromane side who had home advantage and despite the visitors having to line out without a number of regulars; this really added to the win. Certainly this was a superb team performance with everybody really committed in a game that was played throughout at championship pace and swung from end to end with the result hanging in the balance up to the sound of the final whistle. Eoin Kennedy from a free opened Asdees account followed by a similar score from County player Donnacha Walsh. The home side extended their lead in the 15th minute through Liam Walsh. Cromane had slightly the better of matters and Emmet Casey hammered in a goal with 5 minutes remaining in the half. However Asdee responded in style and 3 points on the trot from John Doran, Mike Breen and Darragh Keane and at the interval it was Cromane 1-3 Asdee 0-4. On resumption the visitors were quick out of blocks with Eoin Kennedy splitting the uprights. Cromane replied with 2 points. Further points were exchanged from Darragh Keane and Paul O Sullivan. It was tit for tat up to now but suddenly Asdee hit a new gear and 5 points on the trot; Mike Breen hit 5 points with Kieran Kelly coming from his number 5 spot to fire over. Without doubt the Asdee defence were very much under pressure but they held firm as Cromane came in droves looking for the score that might give them the result they looked for but once again Eoin Kennedy held his nerve to send the ball over and secure a victory over the pre match favourites.

Senior County League: Ballylongford 0-9 Sneem/Derrynane 1-10 Sneem/Derrynane were playing with the aid of a strong breeze and got off to the perfect start when Ian Galvin had the ball in the net in the 1st minute.Ballylongford battled back and a point apiece from Joe McCarthy and Niall Heaphy brought us to within a point by the end of the first quarter. The loss of Eddie Mangan at this stage did'nt help our cause and it took a while for the team to readjust in the meantime Ian Galvin and Ronan Hussey began to find their range and slotted over six points in the remainder of the half for Sneem/Derrynane.Meanwhile for Ballylongfrod Ciaran O'Connor had a pointed free in the 21st minute and the same player forced the Sneem/Derrynane keeper into a brilliant save after a good passing move.Joe McCarthy finished out the scoring with a point in the 30th minute. Half Time Score: Sneem/Derrynane 1-6 Ballylongford 0-4. Sneem/Derrynane were first on the scoreboard with an Ian Galvin point and were in control in the early stages of the second half but did'nt score again until the 20th minute. Ballylongford were also finding it difficult to get on the scoreboard and added just two Ciaran O'Connor pointed frees in the same period. It wasn't from the want of trying as both teams were committed to attacking football and they both had chances of further scores the most notable being an Ronan Hussey shot that struck the crossbar for home side, while Ballylongford had a numerical advantage bearing down on goal only for the referee to halt play for an injury to a player.Ronan Hussey added three points in the final ten minutes while Niall Heaphy got two back for the visitors.Liam Foley thought he had got the goal that Ballylongford were looking for only for the referee to once again bring back the play for a free which was converted. Final Score Sneem/Derrynane 1-10 Ballylongford 0-9. North Kerry Senior League Sunday 27th March 2pm: Knocknagoshel v Ballylongford Monday 28th March 2pm: Duagh v Ballylongford

This was Donacha’s debut Munster Championship contest, and the Kilflyn lad did it in style, winning all three rounds. CASHEN VALE BOXING CLUB
Aaron McElligott boxed brilliantly on Sunday to win the Munster Boy 2 63 kilo Championship title. The 12-year-old was a class apart, and so the referee intervened early in the first round, and gave a TKO to Christopher O Sullivan of the Duhallow club. Aaron was rightly declared the winner. Ryan Downey secured his third consecutive Munster boxing title on Sunday when he defeated the Limerick champion W Faulkner from OLOL boxing club to win the Boy 4 title. The Ballybunion youth started well and boxed at a high tempo for all 3 rounds. Ryan controlled the first and second rounds by landing good jabs, and when the bell rang for the third and final round…..Downey was the boxer with his hand in the air. All of the boys performed magnificently in their bouts, and we can look forward in confidence that they will be right there in the thick of the action, battling for gold on the last day of the “2016” All Ireland Boxing Championships next April.

NOVENA TO ST. MARTHA
O St. MARTHA, I resort to thee and to thy petition and faith, I offer up to thee this light which I shall burn every Tuesday for nine Tuesdays. Comfort me in all my difficulties thro' the great favour thou did’st enjoy when Our Saviour lodged in thy house. I beseech thee to have definite pity in regard to the favour I ask (mention favour). Intercede for my family that we may always be provided for in all our necessities. I ask thee St. Martha to overcome the dragon which thou didst cast at thy feet. One Our Father and three Hail Marys, and a lighted candle every Tuesday and the above prayer made known with the intentions of spreading devotion to St. Martha. Never known to fail. Thanksgiving for favours received, also thanksgiving to The Blessed Virgin and The Sacred Heart MOB
SACRED HEART OF JESUS
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked many favours but today I ask you this special one, (mention request). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart, where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your own favour not mine. Say this prayer for three days and promise publication and your favour will be granted. J.T.
MIRACULOUS INVOCATION TO SAINT THERESA, THE LITTLE FLOWER
O Glorious St. Therese, whom Almighty God has raised up to aid and inspire the human family, I implore your Miraculous Intercession. You are so powerful in obtaining every need of body and spirit from the Heart of God. Holy Mother Church proclaims you 'Prodigy of Miracles... the Greatest Saint of Modern Times.' Now I fervently beseech you to answer my petition (mention here) and to carry out your promises of spending Heaven doing good on earth...of letting fall from Heaven a Shower of Roses. Little Flower, give me your childlike faith, to see the Face of God in the people and experiences of my life, and to love God with full confidence. St. Therese, my Carmelite Sister, I will fulfill your plea 'to be made known everywhere' and I will continue to lead others to Jesus through you. Amen. M.K.
ST. FAUSTINA’A HEALING PRYER
“Jesus may Your pure and healthy blood circulate in my poor ailing organism, and may Your pure and healthy body transform my weak unhealthy body, and may a healthy and vigorous life flow once again within me, if it is truly Your Holy will. Amen. Say for yourself or friend who may not be well. H.H.
THE MIRACLE PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked many favours. This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour).
