North Kerry motorists face Fixed Charge Notice & penalty points for driving with defective or worn tyres
Motorists who drive with defective or worn tyres on their vehicle may now face a fixed charge notice and penalty points, Fine Gael Councillor Mike Kennelly stated. “Although it is already an offence to drive a vehicle with defective or worn tyres, there will now be a fixed charge (or fine) of €80, with two penalty points endorsed on the licence on payment of the fixed charge for commission of the offence, or four penalty points following conviction in court. The new regulations came into effect last Sunday April 17th Councillor Kennelly explained.
“Since the penalty points system was introduced in 2002, there has been a dramatic fall in the numbers dying needlessly on our roads. The penalty points system has played an important role in reducing fatalities and improving road safety since that time. We need to keep up the pressure to reduce road deaths, but the onus is also on the driver to ensure that their vehicle is roadworthy at all times. Just this month, the Road Safety Authority reported that vehicle factors played a role in one in eight fatal collisions across the period 2008 to 2012. Defective tyres were the most significant factor, representing almost two thirds of all vehicle factors identified as contributing to a collision and to the deaths of 71 people on Irish roads in the past five years. “None of us can predict what will happen on our roads; I’d urge all motorists in North Kerry to bring their car to their local garage to make sure their tyres are in good condition. It only takes a few minutes and could be the difference between life and death.”

ATHEA TIDY TOWNS FASHION SHOW
“Undoubtedly, the talk around the parish and beyond for the past few weeks was the success of the recent fashion show. When we were originally approached by Margaret Carroll about the prospect of holding a fashion show, none of us would have envisaged the success story it has turned out to be. Our third fashion show took place recently on a glorious Spring evening where red carpet lined the pavements outside the hall and inside the doors the attendees were welcomed by a cheese and wine reception. The hall had been transformed for the night into a glamorous and attractive setting with a newly constructed catwalk. Black curtains lined the cat walk which were prepared and sewn by volunteer Ellen Quille. In charge of lights for the night was Declan O’Carroll. Thanks to Declan for providing his lighting free of charge and to the Athea Drama Group for the use of the lights and stage. Thanks also to Hannah Mai Collins who provided props for the night. The models done themselves proud and were looking splendid thanks to Kathleen Ambrose and her staff at Athea Hairstylists who looked after hair styles free of charge. The famous 'Jules' kept the crowd entertained for the night and made sure each model was introduced and welcomed onto the catwalk. Patsy Griffin welcomed the crowd in at half time for tea and refreshments and was aided by the Carmody family All of your help was much appreciated. Winner of best dressed lady on the night was Helena Kilbridge who wore a most attractive looking blue jump suit. Thanks to Esther s Abbeyfeale who sponsored this prize.
On behalf of the committee we would like to thank everyone for their assistance. To all models, those who bought tickets, those who donated spot prizes, all local press who advertised the event, to Athea Credit Union and Derek Curtin for their sponsorship, to John Scanlon whose expertise we could not have done without and everyone who contributed to make the night such a success. To Joanne Kelly Walsh and Yvonne Roche who ensured the night ran so smoothly and ensured those back stage were looked after. Thank you to the boutiques that showcased their style on the night namely; Little Rascals Abbeyfeale, Paco Tralee, The Taelane Store Listowel, Glamour Listowel, Dress-Two Impress Listowel, Marielles Abbeyfeale, Heavenly Gifts & Interiors Abbeyfeale, Maireads Abbeyfeale and Scanlan's Menswear Newcastlewest. Lastly, a very special mention for Margaret Carroll and Derek Curtin without whom there would be no fashion show. Weeks of preparation goes on behind the scenes contacting models, boutiques etc. and much time was also spent getting the hall in shape for the night. The success of the night is testament to both your hard work and commitment. Thanks to you both we are now in a much better position to improve our village environs in the months to come. Watch this space!

FINUGE FREEWHEELERS SPRING CLASSIC PEDALS AWAY THIS SUNDAY
Finuge Freewheelers cycling club hosts their first event of the year this Sunday the 24th April in aid of Killocrim National School Listowel. Starting and finishing at Finuge GAA grounds this 73km route takes cyclists over some tough climbs in north Kerry with a total elevation of 743m. However we've got a tasty new route for cyclists everywhere. Starting at Finuge GAA grounds we head to Six Crosses - Rathea - Lyreacrompane - Knocknagoshel - Brosna - Cork Line - Listowel and back to Finuge for some well deserved refreshments. There will be full medical back up provided and cyclists will as usual be guided safely around the course by our motorbike marshals and stewards. We will have a brief water stop with bananas and jellies along the way. This event may not suit those looking for a flat easy spin on black tar roads but it certainly will provide a test of your fitness, grit and determination if you are up for it. When it comes to a Spring Classic it's a case of "go hard or go home". For route details please go to the following link www.strava.com/routes/4584722 Registration will be from 09.00 to 09.50 at Finuge GAA grounds with cyclists rolling out at 10.00 sharp. OPPORTUNITY FOR LOCAL ENTERPRISES TO GET NATIONAL RECOGNITION
Kerry enterprises that have set up their businesses with assistance from the local development companies & Dept. of Social Protection through the Back to Work Area Enterprise Allowance Scheme (BTWEA) are being offered the opportunity to get national recognition for their efforts through a newly launched Enterprise Awards programme. South Kerry Development Partnership and North East & West Kerry Development have this week launched a bid to find four candidate enterprises to represent the county at the Southern Regional Enterprise Awards event with the potential to progress right through and claim the overall national Enterprise award. Speaking at the launch of the Kerry event this week, SKDP CEO Noel Spillane said the awards, which are being run in conjunction with the Irish Local Development Network, provide an excellent opportunity for Kerry to showcase the many successful new enterprises that have been set up in the county with support of the local development companies & the Dept. of Social Protection through the BTWEA over the last few years. “We regularly hear about business closures but this awards programme gives us a chance to celebrate business success and recognise the hard work and vision of small enterprise owners in Kerry” Noel said.
Both SKDP and NEWKD operate the Back to Work/Short Term Enterprise Allowance scheme in conjunction with the Department of Social Protection that provides support, advice and some small grant assistance to unemployed people wishing to set up their own business. The scheme has proven to be a tremendous success with a high percentage of the businesses set up through the programme still operating after 5 years. NEWKD CEO Eammon O’Reilly said that this new awards initiative is open to businesses set up through this scheme since 2011 and he encouraged all eligible businesses to enter the competition. “These businesses are the backbone of rural Ireland in particular and we are delighted to be involved with this initiative to promote them at a regional and national level” Eammon said. The closing date for applications is Friday, 29th April and the application form is available to download from both the SKDP (www.southkerry.ie) and NEWKD (www.newkd.ie) websites or by contacting your local SKDP or NEWKD office directly. The national awards ceremony will take place in Dublin in September.

Next week’s draw takes place in the Chinese Restaurant with a jackpot of €4,550. Thanks to all those who continue to support the Lotto. County Junior Championship : Once again Tarbert bowed out of the Junior championship at the first hurdle. Travelling to Renard and without the services of Ger O’Sullivan, Andrew Doherty and Ambrose Lanigan this game was always going to be a difficult assignment. Tarbert however were well on top in the first half thanks to four points from Shane O’Connor and one each from Micheal and Sean Carrig to lead 0-6 to 0-3 at half time. Shane Enright was also having a great game but it was Renard who registered three points to draw level before Mark Buckley got an excellent score for Tarbert to go up one. Renard and Tarbert’s Shane O’Connor exchanged scores before a goal by Danny Wren which was quickly followed by a point by Finbarr Carrig to put Tarbert up 1-9 to 0-8 entering the final ten minutes. Shane O’Connor responded to another Renard point and with five minutes left Tarbert were still up three. A penalty from Renard levelled matters and in the final minutes after a great save by goalkeeper Micheal Carrig Renard got the winning point. Tarbert had a great chance of a goal in the last attack but a great save by Renard’s keeper ensured victory for the home side. Tarbert now enter the Junior competition and have another trip to South Kerry where they take on Valentia the weekend of 30th April. North Kerry Junior league : Tarbert had a surprise victory over Ballydonoghue last Tuesday evening in the junior league winning on a scoreline of 2-9 to 1-11. Tarbert raced into an early lead thanks to goals from Shea McDonnell and Eamon O’Callaghan but Ballydonoghue game back and were up a point entering the final minutes. A excellent free from Stephen O’Connor and the winning score came from Eamon O’Callaghan with the final kick of the game. Tarbert now travel to Clounmacon this Tuesday evening with a throw in 7pm. COISTE NA NOG Under-8s and Under-10s had a week of no matches but continued to train as the weather started to come back around. The Under-12s were busy, however. Two teams travelled south on Friday evening to take on the hurlers of Kenmare/Kilgarvan. The Colts managed to win their game while their older colleagues took a tough loss after the long trip. The Kenmare footballers then returned the favour by visiting Ballyduff for a football match on Sunday. Again, the visitors handed their hosts a loss with a number of Ballyduff’s top players missing. And again, the Colts showed their skill and resolve by battling to a 2-6 to 1-5 victory. At Under-14 level, the hurlers fought to a 0-9 to 1-6 draw at home to Firies on Wednesday before falling in their hurling match on Saturday away to Ballyheigue. The Under-16s had their scheduled football match against Rathmore cancelled on Thursday night. Finally, as the players continue to get their games sharp for the long summer ahead, their mentors and parents continue to work behind the scenes to support them. Féile preparations are well underway at this stage and fundraising continues for several initiatives, in particular the proposed new hurling ball wall for the sports field. A website has now been rolled out to help with this effort which you can visit at www.ballyduffballwall.com. Please help if you can. CAUSEWAY CAMOGIE CLUB Training for girls from 5yrs to 12 yrs will take place on Saturday mornings from 10am to 11am in the Astro turf Causeway. Cost €2. All girls welcome to come along and give it a go. (Helmet & Hurley will be provided). This is a great way to make new friends and learn a new sport.
BALLYDUFF GAA NEWS Football Championship: Ballyduff travelled to Keel on Saturday evening last to take on the locals in the Premier Junior Football Championship and after a terrific display just came up short by the minimum of margins. Ballyduff played with a strong wind in the opening half and courtesy of a Mikey Boyle goal led by 1 – 3 to 0 – 2 after 15 minutes. Keel rallied and at half-time it was all square 1 – 5 to 0 – 8. Ballyduff looked to have a mountain to climb, facing the strong wind, but they put in an outstanding second half performance. They were leading by two points when Jack Goulding had the misfortune of hitting the post from the narrowest of angles and the sides were on level terms with normal time having elapsed. A free in injury time for Keel was converted by Gary Sayers and referee Tom McCarthy sounded the full time whistle on the kick-out. Ballyduff can be proud of their display against a team 30 places above them in the County League. Everyone of the team gave their all and we wish Keel well in the competition. Tom McCarthy was an impartial referee. Ballyduff Team: James Sheehy; Michael Hussey, Paddy Moran, Thomas Slattery; John Paul Leahy, Cathal Kearney, Paul O’Carroll; Aidan Boyle, Anthony O’Carroll; Roger Costello, Jack Goulding, Eddie Joy; Jersey Houlihan, Barry O’Grady, Mikey Boyle.

ELIGIBLE
By Curtis Sittenfield Liz and Jane are good daughters. They’ve come home to suburban Cincinnati to get their mother to stop feeding their father steak as he recovers from heart surgery, to tidy up the crumbling Tudor-style family home, and to wrench their three sisters from their various states of arrested development. Once they are under the same roof, old patterns return fast. Soon enough they are being berated for their single status, their only respite the early morning runs they escape on together. For two successful women in their late thirties, it really is too much to bear. That is, until the Lucas family’s BBQ throws them in the way of some eligible single men . . .

Junior Club Championship Qualifier Lispole 2-12 Emmets 2-13
Emmets Seniors recorded a hard fought win over a tough Lispole side on Sunday on a scoreline of 2-12 to 2-13. The game was in the melting pot a long way before the final whistle as both teams gave all in a typical Championship encounter, but thankfully the lads had a bit more left in the tank to come away with the win. Jake Moriarty, Maurice Whelan, Tom McCarthy and Aidan Quinn all showed well for Emmets but it was the scoring power of Conor Cox that pulled us over the line as he finished with a personal tally of 1-09. Next up in the championship is a home tie with Beaufort next Saturday April 23rd at 6.30pm. BEALE GAA
Beale Minors take on Asdee/Ballylongford in the final of the County League, Division 5 (13-a-side) on Friday evening at 6.30. We topped the table on eight points, having won all our games. Venue for final yet to be confirmed. These two teams met in March in the league when goals were the order of the day and Beale had the upperhand in a high-scoring game, 5-16 to 3.10. Asdee/Bally ended up second on the table. A very competitive game is anticipated on Friday between these two teams. Churchill got the dream start in the Junior Premier Club Championship, played in Ballybunion on Saturday evening, as they raised the green flag
twice in the opening minutes. However, we regained composure and kept our opponents to just two points for the remainder of the first half, going into the interval, with a three-point cushion, 0-11 to 2-2. Drama unfolded in the second half with three players sent to the line. Churchill lost a forward, with a black card followed immediately by a red and then we received two black cards. As the clock ticked away, very little separated the teams. In injury time, we were seeking that elusive point but, despite the numerical disadvantage, Churchill edged out winners, 3-8 to 0-16. The Beale team was Dermott Cummins, Killian Walsh-O’Boyle, Colm Kissane, Pádraig Murphy, Shane Joy (capt), Paul Collins, Philly Blake, Jeremy King, Dan Ellis, Darragh Buckley, Ger O’Gorman, Jamie Culloty, Tom Joy, Barry O’Mahony and Ian Mannix. Substitutes: Ian Blake for Dermott Cummins (black card), Cormac Walshe for Shane Joy (black card), Jake O’Connell for Tom Joy, James McMahon for Dan Ellis (injured), Matthew Moran, Rory Mulvihill, Alan Breen, Brendan Brennan and Cillian Courtney. We now travel to Cromane on Saturday, April 30th to contest the Junior Club Championship against Cromane. Throw-in at 6.30. . We await details of the refixture of our County League, Division 3, game against Ardfert. Three further rounds of the league will be decided in June. We play Tarbert in Ballybunion at the beginning of June; on June 12th, we play Ballydonoghue and on 19th we host Gneeveguilla in Ballybunion. Beale play Ballydonoghue in the semi-final of the North Kerry League, Division 1 in Ballylongford. Date to be confirmed. Beale Juniors had the upperhand on St Senans in the North Kerry League, Division 4, on a score of 3-10 to 0-4. On Thursday, we play Ballydonoghue at 7 o’clock. BALLYLONGFORD GAA
County Minor League Semi Final Ballylongford/Asdee 2-12 -v- Keel/Listry 2-11 This was a highly entertaining game in which both sides gave their all with only a kick of a ball separating them at the end of a titanic battle played in heavy underfoot conditions in Listry on Friday evening last. Bally/Asdee were on top in the early stages opening their scoring with a goal from Thomas Doherty the same player added a further point before Keel/Listry opened their account they too with a goal from the impressive Sean O'Sullivan who chipped the advancing keeper. Bally/Asdee took over again Eoin O'Connor, Thomas Doherty and Tadhg McEllistrim adding a further four

points without reply. Keel/Listry were always dangerous in the counter attack with Aaron McCarthy making seveal runs from midfield and supplying good ball to his forwards who were always looking for a goal opportunity but the visitors defence held firm forcing them to shoot for points. Bally/Asdee added a further four points which had them five points clear with the half coming to a close, but a last attack from Keel/Listry saw centre back Peadar Keane joining the attack and getting a valuable goal to leave the half time score. Ballylongford/Asdee 1-9 Keel/Listry 2-5. In the second half Keel/Listry were playing with a slight breeze and were first off the mark with a point in the 4th minute from Barry Keane, only for Eoin O'Connor to reply a minute later with a well taken goal to put the visitors back in front. The game ebbed and flowed throughout the half with both sides committed to attacking football. Keel/Listry opened up the visitors defence on a number of occasions only to find stephen Lynch in briallint goal keeping form with three point blank saves while another attack was thwarted when Conor Carmody saved on the line. Bally/Asdee were able to respond with a point for every goal miss and kept their noses in front and with play gone into injury time a final free for Keel/Listry which would have sent the game into extra time dropped short and the final whistle was blown. They now go forward to the final against Beale. Ballylongford Gaa Weekly Lotto Draw 15/4/16 - Jackpot €5850 Numbers Drawn 7. 15. 16. 20. North Kerry Junior League: Ballylongford B 5-8 -v- Ballydonoghue C 1-7.
North Kerry Under 16 League Ballylongford/Asdee 5.2 Ballydonoghue 4.14. Played in Coolard Ballylongford/Asdee were trailing 3.9 0.1 at half time and went further behind when Ballydonoghue scored another goal in the early stages of the second half. But similar to last week they battled on and banged in five goals to close the gap significantly however Balllydonoghue were keeping the scoreboard ticking over and were deserving winners. Under 14 County League - Asdee/Ballylongford 2-9 St Pats Blennerville 6-6 Played in Ballylongford, the home team despite putting up a good scoreline came up short against a fitter Blennerville team. The concession of early goals proved too costly leaving the home side with an uphill battle from the end of the first quarter. However, they did battle on and restored pride in the team. Ciaran Griffin and Patrick Mulvihill started to shore up the defence and this reflected in good ball being played into our forward line. The score at half time read 4-5 to 0-5 in favour of St.Pats with the home points coming from Pauric Fogarty, Bobby McCarron, Carlos Lopez, Byran Murphy and Liam Mulvihill. Asdee/Ballylongford put in a much better second half performance outscoring their opponents 2-4 to 2-1. Pauric Fogarty added a goal early on following good work from defence to the other end involving Ciaran Griffin, Byran Murphy, Brendan Keane and then Liam Mulvihill’s shot being palmed in by Pauric. Liam Mulvihill added 2 more points along with a point from Paddy O’Neill. Just as the home team were getting back into it, they were dealt a cruel blow as St Pats added a goal following a rebound off the post. The Spanish contingent were to add another 1-1 for the home team with Carlos scoring an excellent solo goal and setting up Alex for a point. Unfortunately, the goals required did not materialise and St Pats went on to close out the game on a scoreline of 6-6 to 2-9. Asdee/Bally can be credited for not throwing in the towel after conceding those early goals, each player can be proud of their effort. Under 12 County League Result - Ballylongford/Asdee 2-11 Beale 4-7
Senior County League- Ballylongford 2-8 Austin Stacks B 0-11 Ballylongford collected their first points of the County league with a hard fought win over Austin Stacks in this round 2 back game played at O'Rahilly Park. Both sides were evenly matched in the early stages and were level a four apiece at the end of the first quarter. Ciaran O'Connor with a well taken goal brought a bit of daylight between the sides.Stacks hit back with a pointed free from Alan Duggan before Mikey Collins and Kieran Mulvihill swapped points to leave the half time score. Ballylongford 1-5 Austin Stacks 0-6. Ex Kerry star William Kirby made his entrance for the second half lining out at midfield and with Stacks now playing with the wind his midfield partner Alan Duggan opened the scoring with a point in the 1st minute to reduce the deficit to the minimun. Ciaran O'Connor responded with a point for Ballylongford before Joe McCarthy eluded his marker to score a vital goal in the 9th minute to put a bit of daylight once again between the sides. Stacks replied once again with an Alan Duggan point indeed the same player was to get all their scores in the half.As the game wore on Stacks needed a goal and came close in the 23rd minute but for a fine save from Paudie Moroney. Steven Foley finished out the scoring when he moved up field from centre back to score a fine point. Referee Eddie Barrett.

St Senans V Spa Killarney u14 Co league in Mountcoal Played in dry conditions. Our u14's finally kick started their campaign after 2 early defeats. On the night Senans were too strong for a young spa team who never stopped trying. From the off the boys took control of the middle area of the field and worked some nice points to get the scoreboard ticking over. After 15 min Tomas Dillon struck for his first goal and although spa got into the scoring zone several times, they were well pressurised and only came away with 3 points by the short whistle. St. Senans 3-06 to spa 0-3 The second half saw several changes to personal and Aodhan Behan made his way from rock solid fullback to rattle the net at the other end. Connor Walsh chipped in with 1-02 but the best was saved until last with a finish by Shaun Hunt from almost on the end line went straight in and nestled in the net on the stroke of full time. Final score St Senans 8-14 to Spa 1-06 Minors St. Senans 3-17 Finuge 3-16 The minors took on Finuge in the semi-final of the Co. League. Jack Henessy got Senans on the score board with a point followed by a free from Conor Kennelly. KNOCKANURE GAA
Knockanure V Brosna - We had mixed fortunes in the North Kerry League in the two games so far. In Coolard on Sunday 3rd of April in poor weather conditions, we were beaten by Brosna on a score of Brosna 2-7 to Knockanure 17. Both teams have to be complimented for togging out on the day. Billy Lunch's men who are "animals" to play football in such conditions gave their best but can be very proud f themselves. We are very grateful to the Ballydonoghue club who gave the use of their pitch. Many thanks.
Knockanure V Listowel - On Friday night last in Listowel, Knockanure got revenge for their early defeat, to win against Listowel by producing arguably one of their best displays seen at this venue. Final score was Knockanure 213 Listowel 2-8. In defence were cousins Stack and Jack Goulding. Holding the defence steadfast, no fancy footballers would get through there. Midfield with high fielding and feeding their forwards with accurate passing it was a treat to watch. Some of the scores were something special in the second half. They may not be a big team but make up for that with heart and bravery. Next game fixture to be held on the weekend of the 24th in Brosna. SACRED HEART OF JESUS
Most Sacred Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked many favours but today I ask you this special one, (mention request). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your own broken heart, where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your own favour not mine. Say this prayer for three days and promise publication and your favour will be granted. F.C.C.
UNFAILING NOVENA TO TO ST. ANTHONY
"Blessed be God in His Angels and in His Saints" O Holy St. Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and Charity for His creatures, made you worthy, when on earth, to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble and anxiety. Encouraged by this thought, I implore you to obtain for me (request). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so, you are the Saint of Miracles. O gentle and loving St. Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the sweet Infant Jesus, who loved to be folded in your arms; and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Amen. B.E.
THE MIRACLE PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked many favours. This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your own favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never been known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. R.O.C.
