AOIBHINN HARTE DONATES 16 INCHES OF HER HAIR TO RAPUNZEL

Last Tuesday Aoibhinn Harte (9) donated her hair 16 inches from the nape of her neck to the charity Rapunzel. At the Mantuary Aoibhinn was looked after by Donna who put her hair in a ponytail and then made the cut. The ponytail was placed in a bag and was posted to Rapunzel with Aoibhinn's name and address. The charity Rapunzel makes wigs for children with cancer and other health conditions. Aoibhinn got the idea from watching a child talking about Rapunzel and decided that she would like to donate her hair as she doesn't like to see people sad. Aoibhinn has been growing her hair for a while and was thrilled with her new hair style, and she hopes that her act of kindness will inspire others. Along with the hair donation, Aoibhinn received a few bob from her grandparents John and Imelda for her kind act but on receiving this money decided she wanted to give it to charity and talked her mother into holding a coffee evening in order to raise money for Temple St. Children's hospital. The coffee evening was held last Wed 28th and so far Aoibhinn has raised €760 way more than she anticipated. Thanks to everyone for supporting Aoibhinn and making a huge success. A big act for a little girls. Well done Aoibhinn!!

IMPROVED HEARING ENHANCES QUALITY OF LIFE IN MODERATE DEMENTIA

It has been reported that early findings in a new study suggest that the quality of life is improved in impaired listeners diagnosed with moderate dementia by treating hearing loss with hearing aids, as well as the quality of life of the caregiver. The study by the University of North Texas and Unitron, a global manufacturer of advanced hearing solutions, is being conducted by Amyn M. Amlani, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Speech and Hearing Sciences at the University of North Texas, in partnership with Brian Taylor, Au.D., Director of Practice Development and Clinical Affairs at Unitron. Improvement In Cognitive Ability Using Hearing Aids The researchers have already been able to show some improvement in cognitive ability among participants using hearing aids. This is certainly suggestive that there may be new therapeutic potential for hearing aids in cases of dementia. If the early results are found to be conclusive, the findings could enhance the role of hearing healthcare professionals in the rehabilitation of patients diagnosed with cognitive decline in relation to his or her hearing. Dr. Amlani said, "This study looks at whether improved hearing can improve cognitive functioning for people who have already been diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease or other forms of dementia, In particular, we want to understand whether better hearing can play a role in helping people with dementia lead more active and engaged lives, particularly if hearing loss is identified and treated early." Untreated Hearing Loss & Dementia Previous studies have found that people with hearing loss are significantly more likely to develop dementia over time in comparison to those with normal hearing. There are currently many studies ongoing in relation to hearing loss and neuro degenerative disease, but no data yet exists showing that the effects of dementia can actually be lessened through the use of hearing aids. Brian Taylor said, "Given the expected sharp increase in dementia cases over the next few decades, our findings could have significant implications for aging individuals as they begin experiencing hearing loss, Unitron is focused on providing solutions for healthcare providers so they can better serve their patients, and get them the treatment they need." The study includes adults 50-90 years' of age with moderate dementia who are inexperienced with amplification devices. It measures speech-recognition performance in noise, cognition and self-reported improvements in quality of life.

ST. JOSEPH’S BALLLYBUNION SET THE BAR HIGH AT STUDENT ENTERPRISE AWARDS

UNEMPLOYMENT RATE DROPS TO 8.4% AS MORE YOUTHS FIND WORK

Fine Gael Councillor Mike Kennelly has welcomed news that the unemployment rate fell to 8.4 per cent last month, down from 8.6 per cent in March and from 9.7 per cent for April 2015.

“What is particularly encouraging about these figures is that the youth unemployment rate dropped from 19.1% in March, to 18% in April,” Councillor Kennelly pointed out. “I know we have a very skilled and able workforce here in north Kerry, and I want to see good jobs provided for those who wish to work here. The data show the number of people recorded as unemployed totalled 183,700 last month, representing a drop of 3,700 from March and down 25,700 from April last year. “That our unemployment rate continues to drop is a positive for our economy, but we need to take congnisance of the fact that external factors may post challenges,” the Councillor continued.

Five students from St. Joseph’s, Ballybunion represented Kerry in the senior category of the Student Enterprise Awards in Croke Park on Wednesday 20th April. Lorna O’Leary, Tara O’Shea, Niamh Stack, Alannah Whelan and Conor McGrath were among the top 1% of student entrepreneurs from across the country in Croke Park On the day, the students showcased their new business enterprise ‘RipBar’. Ripbar is a natural seaweed protein bar which is created using locally sourced seaweed from Ballybunion. RipBar is marketed towards gym and fitness enthusiastic as well as those looking for a quick, healthy snack. Seaweed is one of the original super foods and is packed full of protein and minerals. There is no end to what seaweed can do you for your health. The product generated huge interest both at the county and national finals of the Student Enterprise Awards. We are continually working to further develop our business and we are hoping to have RipBar on the shop shelves very soon. RipBar would like to thank their school, parents, local community and their mentor Tom O’Leary for all the help and support they have received with their business venture. You can get more information about RipBar on their Facebook page.

“Some of the significant risks to our continuing recovery include Brexit, conflict and instability in the Middle East, oil prices, slowdown in China – and yesterday we saw the EU Commission downgrade its forecasts for EU growth. “While unemployment is expected to continue to decline, we need to continue to make any chances necessary to improve our international competitiveness,” Councillor Kennelly concluded.

The talented sportsman and former All Ireland Vocational Schools football medal winner with Causeway Comprehensive School also won numerous awards with is beloved Lixnaw hurling club and with Lixnaw Boys N.S. during his time among us. Thomas will long be remembered for many things and those of us who were lucky enough to have known him can consider ourselves truly privileged. Lixnaw led 1-14 to 0-8 at half time, the goal coming from Micheal Dennehy. Shane Conway was unerring from play and frees and accounted for 0-14 points of Lixnaws total. Kilmoyley/Abbeydorney came more into the game after the break and reduced the arrears to six points but Lixnaw put the game beyond all reasonable doubt with an opportunist Tommy Molyneaux goal mid way through the second half. The game fizzled out after this goal and Lixnaw were home and dry before the final whistle. In the second game we played Booleenshere from Ballyheigue and triumphed 3-4 to 0-3pts. Having now won our group we now were in the semi final where we played Sliabh a Mhadra where after a tough game we qualified for the final. The final you could say was a local derby. Ourselves and our neighbours Kilflynn N.S. and what a final it turned out to be. Kilflynn played with the wind in the first half and unlike previous games scores were hard to come by. In the end it finished 4 points each and extra time had to be played to separate the sides. In the first period of extra time Lixnaw started well and went five points ahead. In the second half Kilflynn came storming back and Lixnaw were lucky to come away with a two point victory. A feature of the final was the brilliance of Lixnaw goalkeeper Keltyn Molloy who brought off three magnificent saves. Final score was Lixnaw 1-8 to Kilflynns 1-6. Thanks to all those who continue to support the Lotto. Junior Championship: Tarbert made the long journey last weekend to Valentia and after a very exciting game came away with a welcomed victory on a scoreline of 3-12 to 1-10. While the result does not do justice to Valentia’s efforts, Tarbert’s display for the extra time period was refreshing. Shane O’Connor opened the score for Tarbert and then after a goal opportunity from Kevin Enright was saved Valentia went up the field to score a crucial goal. Valentia and Tarbert exchanged points during the first half to leave the score at half time at 1-4 to 0-4. Scores were at a premium throughout with both defenses playing well bit then a well worked goal from Tarbert’s Finbarr Carrig seemed to give the initiative to Tarbert who led by a point entering the final minutes. Valentia then levelled at the end of the game to send the match to extra time. Tarbert started extra time well with Shane O’Connor getting two quick points for Tarbert. Then the crucial score of the game came when Finbarr Carrig was fouled inside the penalty area which Ambrose Lanigan duly scored after

the Valentia’s goalkeeper saved the initial attempt. Valentia scored the last two points of the half to leave the score 2-9 to 1-9. Shane o’Connor scored another long range free and then substitute Sean Holly put the game beyond reach with a goal that was followed by the score of the game by Ambrose Lanigan with his long range pointed effort. Team Jamie Diggins, Sean Carrig, Ambrose Lanigan, Michael Heaphy, Danny Wren, Ian Flavin, Eddie O’Connor, Conor Flavin, Micheal Normile, Kevin Enright, Jason Wren, Shane O’Connor, Finbarr Carrig, Donal Leahy, Andrew Doherty, Subs who played Noel Kennedy, Sean Holly, Gavin Breen, Jack Healy. This was a great team performance by all involved and a much needed win by the team. Special mention must go to Shane O’Connor who scored ten points on the night. The club would also like to acknowledge the sponsorship of Fergal and Elaine O’Connor of South of Ireland Waste Management in supplying a new set of jersey for the team. Presentation of the jerseys was made by Fergal and Elaine to team members in Carmody’s Bar on Saturday night. Thanks again Fergal and Elaine. KERRY ASSOCIATION LONDON On Wed, 27th of April, the Darkness into Light committee members were joined by representatives of the Clayton Crown Hotel to present a cheque to ICAP, the Immigrant Counselling and Psychotherapy charity. Thanks to the generosity of the London Irish community, £4,000 was donated to the mental health charity. The Darkness into Light walk was brought to London thanks to the support and coordination of the Kerry Association London and its dedicated members. The walk took place last year on the 9th May 2015 with an estimated 700 participants taking part in the charity event. The next Darkness into Light walk will take place in London on Friday night 6th of May into Saturday morning 7th of May. It is a unique, early morning experience which begins in darkness at 4.15am as thousands of people walk or run a 5km route while dawn is breaking. The early dawn represents hope and is symbolic of the work of Pieta House; bringing people from darkness back into the light. This year will see members of popular Irish bands; Ronan McManus, Enda Mulloy, JP O’Donnell, Liam Gill and Peter Coughlan lead the walk with members of the committee. Darkness into Light is the most vital component of Pieta House’s fundraising calendar. As demand for the service continues to grow and with more than 80% of Pieta House’s income depending on public donations, funds raised during Darkness into Light are essential for Pieta House to continue to provide a free service for the increasing numbers seeking help. We would love the community to get involved.

COISTE NA NOG The Under-11 hurlers from Ballyduff took part in a Community Games blitz on Saturday. After a victory against Kenmare by 2 goals to 1, they ran into a well drilled Kilmoyley team who took the win in the second match. They bounced back in their third match, however, defeating Lixnaw to take third overall. Congrats to the team on bringing more medals to the club! The Under-12 Colts played a hurling match against Tralee Parnells on Friday evening, which they won well. Meanwhile, the Under-14s were busy with their much anticipated Kerry Féile hurling semi-final against Kenmare/Kilgarvan which was played on Saturday afternoon in Killarney Legion. The team battled well and, despite low scoring on both sides, they pulled away to secure their place in Monday’s final with a 2-3 to 0-3 scoreline. They will now face Ballyheigue in Kilmoyley for all the spoils of a trip to Tipperary/Waterford the national competition. Best of luck! Football will return on Tuesday for the Under-12s with games for both teams in Ardfert, throwing in at 6:00pm. They will then take on Churchill at 7:00 on Thursday evening at home. Please come out to support the players. The Under 16-footballers travelled to Coolard for a match this week but were unable to overcome a strong Ballydonoghue side. Remember to please visit the website www.ballyduffballwall.com if you are interested in helping with the club’s effort to build a new ball wall. You can donate directly on the website or you can contact the fundraising committee through Noel Browne (085 780 5495), Mary Joe O’Connor (086 065 1451) or Charlie Farrell (087 283 5819). Contributions are greatly appreciated and will go a long way to furthering the youth sporting experience in Ballyduff. Also note that a new series of club gear is available to purchase, including training tops, football gloves, beanie hats and shorts, among other items, all with the club crest and some smart designs. SENIOR FOOTBALL: Ballyduff senior footballers played Asdee in the North Kerry Senior Football League Division 2 on Friday evening last in Ballyduff. Second half goals from Eddie Joy & 1 – 1 from David Goulding to one point for Asdee left the final score at Asdee 1 – 6 to Ballyduff 2 – 3. This Thursday night's draw will be held at Bingo in the Marian Hall and the Jackpot is €5,000. STRICTLY It was Sunday Night Fever in Moyvane last Sunday night as Moyvane GAA presented their very own Strictly Come Dancing and was it some hit! This was the most professional presentation I have ever seen in Moyvane. The Community Sports Hall was transformed into a ballroom with lighting & draping. Music pumped through the speakers from early evening. It was standing room only. The young people from Cassie Leen's school of dancing opened the evening and warmed up the audience. Katie Galvin was MC and you all know the imposing figure Katie is and she has the personality to go with it. The judges were the inimitable Michael Healy Rae, our new to North Kerry, local TD and as usual he was not short of a word but was having none of it when Katie suggested that he might part with his cap! Michael was joined by former Miss Universe Ireland, Aoife Hannon, School of Irish Dancing teacher and former Riverdance member, Johnny Cronin and Chairman of Moyvane GAA, Johnny Stack. The evening kicked off with Regina Galvin & Liam Corridan. There was a mixture of the young and not so young and at times it was difficult to know which was which! The selection was diverse. Karina Stack & Sean Walsh treated us to "The Macarena" while Shauna Foley and Kevin Kennelly strutted their stuff to "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air". Brenda Kennelly & John Mulvihill danced to Michael Jackson's "The Way You Make me Feel" and Siobhan Fitzgerald and James Fogarty were tailor made for "Grease" and "Saturday Night Fever". This was a wonderful night's entertainment, something we need much more of. Congratulations and well done to all involved.

U10 girls before the start of the 100m at Duagh/Lyre Community Games sports night last Friday

After thirty years at St Oswald’s Grammar in North Yorkshire, Latin master Roy Straitley has seen all kinds of boys come and go. But every so often there’s a boy who doesn’t fit the mould. A troublemaker. A boy with hidden shadows inside. A new broom has arrived, bringing Powerpoint, sharp suits and even sixth form girls to the dusty corridors. But while Straitley does his sardonic best to resist this march to the future, a shadow from his past is stirring. A boy who even twenty years on haunts his teacher’s dreams. A boy capable of bad things.

Joanne Harris will be a featured writer at Writers’ Week, on Saturday 4th June from 4.30pm in The Listowel Arms Hotel

Our senior team are through to the quarter finals of the Junior Championship after a great win over a tough Beaufort side on Saturday evening last. The home side took the lead early on but points from Conor Cox and Tom McCarthy had Emmets in front after just 3 minutes and that is the way it stead for the remainder of the game with our lads putting in a good display of attacking football. Beaufort had their chances too but our defence held strong throughout with Jack McGuire in particular having a fine game, even chipping in with a fine score of his own. Once again our talisman and captain, Conor Cox had his shooting boots well and truly oiled up and kicked 207 of our overall score, the goals coming from a clever fisted effort in the 1st half and a penalty just before the final whistle to cement our place in the next round. Overall it was a solid performance from the team with good displays in particular from Denis Walsh, David Sheehy, Conor Cox and Jack McGuire. We travel to Firies in the quarter final with date and time TBC. Listowel Emmets: Keith Hughes, Jake Moriarty, Jack McGuire 0-01, Niall Collins, Darragh Leahy, Brendan Guiney, Tom Melvin, Tom McCarthy 0-01, Cormac Mulvihill 0-01, Maurice Whelan, Denis Walsh, David Sheehy, Brian Murphy, Bryan Sweeney, Conor Cox (captain) 2-07 Subs used: Noel Kennelly and Aidan Quinn

LISTOWEL CELTIC

U13 cup semi final: Listowel Celtic 3 Killarney Celtic 2. A fantastic semi final played in Tanavalla last evening with the home side coming out on top, Listowel Celtic started the better team and found themselves a goal up inside the first 15 minutes with a super free kick by Ben O Connor. Listowel were on the front foot and 5 minutes later they rattled the Killarney net again with a cracking strike by Sean Stackpoole. Killarney pushed hard and were rewarded when they pulled one back just before the break. Second half saw Killarney really push hard for the equaliser but to no avail as the Listowel defence stood strong with an outstanding display from Aisling Kelly. Listowel got their 3rd with 10 minutes to go with another strike from Sean Stackpoole. A late free kick from Killarney saw them get a conciliation goal and shortly after the referee blew the full time whistle to leave the score Listowel Celtic 3 Killarney Celtic 2 and Listowel Celtic advance to the John Joe Naughton Cup Final where they will play the Park. Listowel Celtic U14 girls are crowned Kerry Cup Champions 2015/2016. Congratulations to our U14 girls team who retained the Kerry Cup on Saturday in Mounthawk Park with an 8.0 victory over Mastergeeha. Goals from Aoife Horgan (3), Caoimhe Spillane (2) and 1 each from Jade Harkin, Zara O Doherty and Cliona Pierse helped our girls secure the win and retain the Cup. Full credit to all the girls who worked tirelessly throughout the game, they were delighted afterwards when our captain Hannah Healy received the Cup from Padraig Hartnett, Kerry Schoolboys/girls league secretary. Well done to all involved! Congratulations and well done to Aisling Kelly on making the Kerry Schoolboys/girls team of the week and also to Aoife Horgan who was named Kerry Schoolboys/girls girls player of week. ASDEE GAA

NORTH KERRY LEAGUE. Asdee 1-6 -v- Ballyduff 2-3. Played at Ballyduff on Friday evening last where these two understrength sides served up a well contested encounter and after a hard fought game where defences were completely on top; it took a last grasp effort from David Goulding to give the home side a share of the spoils. Certainly the teams were very evenly matched on the evening and all through there was very little separating the sides both enjoyed their fair share of possession but in fairness squandermania was to set in in both camps but credit those backs who stuck to their task and was to make life in the scoring department difficult for their opponents. Another aspect of the game was the fine goalkeeping by both Eoin Tydings for Asdee and Sean Brown for the home side and especially the latter who singlehandledy deprived the visitors with 3 terrific point blank saves. It was the home side who got off to the perfect start and early points from Sean Costello and David Goulding had their side ahead 2pts without reply by the 4th minute. However a minute later Eoin Kennedy split the posts for Asdee followed by a pointed free from Mike Breen and at the end of the first quarter it was all square; 2pts each. It was nip and tuck for the remainder of the half with Asdee having slightly the better of proceedings; Matthew O Hanlon pointed before Kieran Kelly came up from his wing back position to kick the first of his 2 points and after a brilliant run from midfielder Darragh Keane cut through to give Sean Brown in the Ballyduff goals little chance with a piledriver to the roof of the net. Half time Asdee 1-5 Ballyduff 0-2. Certainly that half time scoreline didn’t do justice to the home side and it wasn’t long on resumption before they were to rectify this. Eddie Joy took advantage of some sloppy play in the visitors goalmouth and he side-footed the ball to the net by the 7th minute. It was end to end play now and again it was rather difficult to convert scoring opportunities with a mixture of excellent defending and poor shooting. Ballyduff were now getting on top at midfield with Liam Doyle and Sean Costello edging out John Doran and Darragh Keane. David Goulding who was to prove a handful all evening grabbed his opportunity when he got inside his marker and he billowed the net from close range to level up the tie at 2-2 to 1-5. As we approached the latter stages it looked as if the visitors might steal the game when Mike Breen lofted over a close in free to put his side ahead with their only score of the half. But you write off Ballyduff at your peril and with time almost up it was David Goulding who saved the day with a point from an acute angle. Referee Seamus Mulvihill, added to the enjoyment of the game with a competent performance. Teams and scorers; Asdee Eoin Tydings, Con Carmody, Martin Collins, Eoin O Carroll,

NORTH KERRY GAA L B R OV E R S F C SO CC E R AC ADE MY PRESENT AT IO N EV ENING This event took place on Friday 29th April in the Tintean Theatre. There was a fantastic turnout of players and parents for the event. The Chairman, David Tyrrell addressed the gathering of players and parents. He thanked all the players for their efforts throughout the season. He highlighted that there were over 90 players attending the academy ranging in ages from 5 up to 12 years of age. He also stated that the players attending the academy are from the parishes of Ballybunion, Ballydonoghue, Ballyduff and Causeway which just shows the interest there is in soccer in North Kerry. The Chairman also thanked the coaches Ger Buckley, Eddie Houlihan, Sean O'Keeffe, Micheal Canty, John Horgan for all their hard work throughout the season. He gave special mention to Eoin O'Mahony who did trojan work for the academy as he coached at all age levels. He also referred to the work of the management committee, which has put the academy on a sound footing in the areas of club finances, child welfare and coaching. The academy intends to do more fundraising with bag packing in SuperValu in Ballybunion in early September. The Chairman also thanked the Principal, Ita Kelly of Scoil Iosagain for allowing the academy to use the school pitch for training and to host matches. Highlights of the season was the entry of an U12 team into the Kerry School Boys/Girls League. They have performed admirably and hopefully they will continue their improvement next season, which sees them move up to U13 level. The academy also hosted an U11 blitz in March at the sports pitch at Scoil Iosagain that was attended by Asdee Rovers, Tralee Dynamos and St Brendans Park. There were also plenty of matches for the U7s, U8s, U9s and U10s throughout the season. They played Listowel Celtic, Tralee Dynamos, Killeaney FC and many more teams. The event concluded with the presentation of water bottles to all the players from the various age groups to thank them for all their efforts throughout the season. Photos were taken of all age groups. The photo below is of all the players on the steps of the Tintean. It ended a very enjoyable event for everyone concerned. The future for LB Rovers FC Soccer Academy looks bright indeed.

Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God; Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succour me in my necessity (Mention your request here) There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times). Holy Mary, I place this prayer in your hands (3 times). Amen. This prayer is never known to fail and is to be said for 3 consecutive days. Publication on granting of the favour must be promised and done. C.O.C.

SALUTATION OF THE WOUND IN THE SHOULDER OF JESUS

O most loving Jesus, meekest Lamb of God, I, a miserable sinner, salute and worship the most Sacred wound of thy Shoulder on which Thou didst bear Thy heavy Cross, which so tore Thy Flesh and laid bare Thy bones as to inflict on Thee an anguish greater than any other wound of Thy most Blessed Body. I adore Thee, O Jesus most sorrowful; I praise Thee, I bless and glorify Thee and give Thee thanks for this most sacred and most painful wound beseeching Thee by that exceeding pain, and the crushing burden of Thy heavy Cross, to be merciful to me, a sinner, to forgive me all my mortal and venial sins, and to lead me on towards Heaven along the way of the Cross'. S.B.

THE MIRACLE PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked many favours. This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your own favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never been known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. D.H.
