There was a massive crowd in the appropriately named Pairc na Feile in Brosna on Monday for the launch of the 2016 Feile na Peil, co-hosted by Kerry, Cork, and Limerick – Brosna was the perfect meeting point for the three counties and were magnificent hosts. The crowd, including Uachtarain CLG Aogain o Fearghaill and Uachtarain LGFA Marie Hickey and Mayor of Kerry Tom McEllistrim, were treated to a boys and girls blitz between Castleisland Desmonds and Knock/Brosna (Kerry), Fr. Caseys boys and girls teams (Limerick) and Knocknagree and Duraigle Gaels (Cork).

The formal launch took place where the parishes of Brosna (Kerry), Rockmount (Cork) and Tournafulla/Mountcollins (Limerick) meet. The dignitaries were taken there by bus to be greeted by the formal retinue of ‘Ri na Caide’ (King of Football) and his retinue, including his bard, all clad in the retinue of a court of ancient Ireland, along with his faithful wolfhound Bran, all led by pipers along three adjoing paths to the meeting point. There the crowd were treated to a sumptuous feats of Irish culture, with children performing sean-nos singing, dancing, and traditional music.

On the return to Pairc na Feile, Aogain o Fearghaill and Marie Hickey presented all the children who played in the blitz with commemorative medals (highlighting the participation aspect of Feile rather than competition). Three wonderful servants of juvenile GAA in Kerry were honoured for their lifetime dedication to the support and promotion and juvenile GAA – the presentations to PJ Shanahan (Duagh), Richard Cotter (Desmonds), and Mike Brosnan (Knock/Brosna) raised cheers as big as any other on the night. Outstanding MC Timmy Moynihan introduced speakers such as Mikey Joe Walsh (Chairman of Brosna), Tom Keane (Chairman of Kerry Coiste na nOg and Feile 2016), Martin Skelly (National Chairman of Feile), Peter Rooney (Managing Director of sponsors John West), Tom McEllistrim (Mayor of Kerry), and Presidents Aogain o Fearghaill and Marie Hickey spoke about the importance of Feile and welcomed it to Brosna and all of Kerry.

Registration at Finuge GAA grounds will be from 14.00 with cyclists rolling out on the 65 km route at 15.00 sharp. The premise of this easy going fun event is that pairs of cyclists stop at five pre-arranged areas around the route and pick up an envelope each time. When they return to Finuge the winning poker hand wins and collects the Poker Run Cup. All of this is done in a very relaxed easy going manner with no rushing or racing ahead. A day of fun to raise money for Down Syndrome Kerry and great preparation for the Ring of Kerry and The RoNK (Ring of North Kerry) - perfect for beginners/ leisure cyclists.

KERRY’S MEMORIALS, PLAQUES AND SIGNS 2016 SURVEY – CAN YOU HELP?

Memorials, plaques and signs are an often overlooked part of our cultural heritage. They identify and honour people, historic events and heritage landmarks of the county. Whilst we know that there are many such memorials, plaques and signs located throughout County Kerry, they have never been comprehensively recorded to date. So, as part of the Kerry 2016 Centenary Programme the Heritage Office of Kerry County Council is now undertaking an audit of these memorials, plaques and signs and we would like your help. The information gathered in this audit will be made public and may be of interest to local community groups, historians, educational institutions, tourists and our Diaspora. A travelling exhibition through the County Library Network will be launched during Heritage Week 2016 and the audit will also be utilised to inform future civic memorial, plaque and sign policies within the county The types of memorials that we are interested in are those which commemorate: • Influential people (politics, sport, religion, literature, public life) • Events • Dedications on buildings, bridges and other structures • Special or sacred places and/or structures • Significant street names and laneways • Miscellaneous (bench marks, armorial plaques, mile markers etc) • Personal memorials • Please note – graveyard memorials are not included in this survey.

If you know of any such memorials in your area we would be very grateful if you could let us know by filling out the survey forms available to print at www.Kerry2016.ie and www.Kerrycoco.ie and either post or email it back to the T.J. O’Mahony, Heritage Officer, Kerry County Council, County Buildings, Rathass, Tralee, County Kerry. Tel: 066-712111 ext 3370. KERRY ASSOCIATION LONDON Emma Murphy O'Connor has been selected as the 2016 London Rose. Emma, 23 is from London and is currently a full time student at the University of Law, Moorgate. Emma, whose ex London Irish rugby player father is from London and mother from Galway, represented Cork based sponsor Seaview House Hotel. On the 7th of May, the student was selected from 15 other hopefuls at the annual London Rose of Tralee selection ball at the Clayton Crown Hotel in Cricklewood. She wowed the judges with an energetic performance on a fiddle. She impressed the 240 strong audience with tales from her gap year, her ambitions to train as a solicitor and her fundraising. Emma was presented her sash by outgoing 2015 London Rose Aisling Hillary after Chairman Noel O'Sullivan announced her as the winner. The judges had a difficult decision to make with 15 strong ladies interviewed and assessed from early that afternoon. For the first time this year, the finalists were treated to a replica Rose of Tralee mini-tour to give them a taste of the Tralee experience. Emma will go on to represent London in Rose of Tralee festival in August. It is the first time that all Rose centers go straight to Tralee to participate in the competition.

Presentation of prizes will take place on Sunday night June 5th at 9.00pm. The event is sponsored by Alan O’Sullivan, Heating & Plumbing, Bathroom4U, www.b4u.ie COISTE NA NOG This week will see the Under-10 football squad travel to Listowel on Wednesday evening for another blitz. Players are to meet in the square in Ballyduff at 6:00pm.

The Under-11 hurlers were in action this past week, falling to St. Brendan’s of Ardfert in a tightly contested match on Ballyduff’s top field on Friday evening. Meanwhile, the Under-12s split two games with St. Brendan’s footballers on Tuesday in Ardfert, the Colts managing a solid victory while their older teammates struggled against their powerful opponents on the adjacent pitch. With a few injuries and many of the players involved with the busy Under-14 squad, this group will no doubt benefit from a few days’ rest. Speaking of the Under-14s, their reward for capturing the Féile hurling championship on Monday was a long trip to Kenmare for a football match on Wednesday. After a solid first half, their recent workload started to tell and they faded in the latter stages, finishing on the short end of the scoreboard. They will take the coming week to regroup and look forward to an exciting summer. The Under-16s had a match against Causeway at home in perfect conditions on Friday night. The game was wide open as each team only fielded 11 players. Ballyduff took advantage of the extra space and came away with a nice win.

Remember to please visit the website www.ballyduffballwall.com if you are interested in helping with the club’s effort to build a new ball wall. You can donate directly on the website or you can contact the fundraising committee through Noel Browne (085 780 5495), Mary Joe O’Connor (086 065 1451) or Charlie Farrell (087 283 5819). Contributions are greatly appreciated and will go a long way to furthering the youth sporting experience in Ballyduff.

BALLYLONGFORD BEREVEMENT It has been one of the darkest and devastating weeks in the Community in quiet a long time with the family and the larger inhabitants of the community and beyond trying to come to terms with the tragic loss of one of our most respected members. The recent farm tragedy surrounding the passing of the late John O’ Connor R.I.P. of Ahanagran and formerly of Main Street, Ballylongford on Bank Holiday Monday May 2nd has cast a grim and frightening gloom in a community that has more than its fair share of gloom in the past. John O’ Connor was a man of 65 years of age who loved everything about life. The second son of a family of five born to Jack and Sadie he enjoyed his youth growing up in the family run Bar and Grocery shop in Bridge Street. He attended the Old School where he made lifelong friends and on leaving school he took up employment with O’Sullivan’s the family run Hardware where he worked in the Cash & Carry section of the business along with such men as Arty Brandon (R.I.P.) Jerry Behane, but to name a few. He had always loved the outdoor life and more especially the farming aspect of the outdoor life, with a vision to become part of the farming community. That vision became a reality when he and his wife Elma began operating on their now family farm in Ahanagran. His hard work and vision paid dividends and the farm now is a model one all due to his hard work and vision. Having recently, retired from dairy farming John kept his interests very much alive with the stocking of dry cattle, this gave him a bit more leisurely time, he did not sit down and watch the world go by, no he had other interests and that was cycling. Normally one would accustom John to his bike as he cycled nearly everywhere on the common bike, but now his interests had developed in Charity Cycling and that entailed long distance cycles and quiet an amount of training. He conquered the first leg of his newfound interest last year by doing the Ring of Kerry Cycle, and had indeed plans to pursue other events in the future. Alas, his visions came to a very sad conclusion on that illfated morning as he was attending to one of his loved farming duties spreading manure and getting ready for this year’s annual silage crop. Unfortunately, space does not allow me to elaborate more on the man who was a pillar of this community, he was so jolly, funny and good company, he always was laughing or cracking jokes. Very rarely has any one seen John without that smile, that will always be remembered by all of us that had the pleasure of knowing him. Such was the popularity of the man that it was reflected by the colossal amount of

sympathisers that attended both his reposing and his requiem mass. To his heartbroken family wife Elma, daughter Patricia son Brian, brothers, sister, grandchild, family relatives, neighbours and wide circle of friends we extend our deepest sympathies. John reposed at Lynch’s Funeral Home, Ballylongford on Wednesday evening from 5pm with removal to his residence afterwards. Requiem Mass was on Thursday at 11am at St Michael of the Archangel Church with burial afterwards in Lislaughtin Abbey. May he rest in everlasting peace. O’RAHILLY COMMEMORATION The organisers of The O’Rahilly Commemoration would like to express their sincere gratitude to the pupils of St. Oliver’s National School principal Ms. L. O’Sullivan and teachers, the Ballylongford Folk Choir, an t-Uasal Padraig O’Concubhair, Ballylongford Parish Choir, Fr. THIS LIVING AND IMMORTAL THING By Austin Duffy

Billy Keane with Staff and Volunteers at the official opening of the new National Council for the Blind Charity shop on Church Street

'My life is in your hands, doctor, they would som times say, which it never was...' This Living and Immortal Thing inhabits a world of medicine, research, cancer and death. Its disillusioned and darkly funny narrator is an Irish oncologist, who is searching for a scientific breakthrough in the lab of a New York hospital while struggling with his failing marriage and his growing alienation within the city's urban spaces. Tending to the health of his laboratory mice, he finds comfort in work that is measurable, results that are quantifiable. But life is every bit as persistent as the illness he studies. As he starts a new treatment on his mice, he meets a beautiful but elusive Russian translator at the hospital, his estranged wife begins to call, his neighbours are acting strangely and his supervisor pressures him to push ahead professionally. And always there is the pull of family; of the place he considers home. Shot through with Duffy's haunting, beautiful descriptions of the science underlying cancer, which starkly illustrate the paradox of an illness at whose heart is a persistent and deadly life force, This Living and Immortal Thing shows how the cruelty of the disease is a price we pay for the joy and complexity of being in the world.

LISTOWEL EMMETS LADIES

Congrats to Kerry U16 ladies county team especially Manager Graham Shine and Listowel Emmets Sophie Lynch on retaining the Munster under 16 championship title.

The Listowel U14 girls community games football team competed in the county competition on Monday May 2nd. The team consisted entirely of Emmets players who did themselves, their club and town immensely proud by capturing the U14 county title for 2016. The feat was all the more impressive as they beat highly fancied teams from South of the county along the way. First up was Rathmore/Gneeveguilla and what a game this turned out to be with Listowel battling every inch of the way to etch out a one point win. After an easy win in game two against Keel, next up was the semi final and a match against Cahirciveen and some old foes from the Southern Gaels club. Again this was an epic encounter with the Listowel girls powering to a 2 point win and a place in the final against a Killorglin side who had brushed aside all opposition en route. Once again this was an epic encounter and when last year's All-Ireland U14 community games champions goaled to take the lead two minutes from time it looked to be all over for the team from North of the county. But the Listowel girls were having none of it and their response was swift and decisive, moving the ball up to the opponents inline before working across for a wonderful goal of their own. When the final whilstle blew, the Listowel girls were county champions with 2 points to spare. This was a truly magnificent campaign for this team who showed a steelie determination and no small amount of skill along the way. They now go on to represent Kerry in Munster where hopefully their tough county campaign will stand to them. Well done to all involved and we wish them the best of luck for the remainder of the competition.

Beale are through to the quarter final of the Junior Club Championship, after a win over Cromane on Saturday evening. We were lucky to go into the interval with our noses in front by a goal and Cromane will rue their many off-target wides in the first half. On the changeover, we found it hard to find the scores and our opponents nipped away at our lead, with the teams level at the three-quarter mark. Then two great goals set us up for victory on a scoreline of 4-8 to 1-11. Beale team: Dermott Cummins, Killian Walsh-O’Boyle, Paul Collins, Colm Kissane, Johnny O’Sullivan (1-0), Shane Joy, Philly Blake, Jeremy King (0-1), Pádraig Murphy, Jamie Culloty, Ger O’Gorman (0-2(1f)), Ian Mannix, Darragh Buckley (2-3(2f), James McMahon and Barry O’Mahony. Substitutes: Ian Blake (0-1) for Jamie Culloty, Tom Joy (1-1) for Pádraig Murphy, Rory Mulvihill for Johnny O’Sullivan, Matt Moran for Paul Collins and Cillian Courtney for Barry O’Mahony. We now play Asdee in the quarter final at the end of May. We await details of the refixture of our County League, Division 3, game against Ardfert. Three further rounds of the league will be decided in June. We play Tarbert in Ballybunion at the beginning of June; on June 12th, we play Ballydonoghue and on 19th we host Gneeveguilla in Ballybunion. Beale play Ballydonoghue in the semi-final of the North Kerry League, Division 1 in Ballylongford. Date to be confirmed. Beale Juniors have qualified for the semi-final of the North Kerry League, Division 4, against Desmonds. Date and venue to be confirmed. We contest

Group 6 of the County Junior League (13-a-side), with our first gams scheduled for Friday, May 20th. Games continue each Friday thereafter until midJune. Other teams in this group include Brosna, Tarbert, Annascaul, Charlie Kerins and Moyvane.

A great day of games, fun and thrills at Beale GAA Club Day, Lá na gClubanna, was had by all on Sunday last. There were activities for all ages, the young and the young at heart. Our under-age stars enjoyed the obstacle course, tug-of-war and skills competitions, too mention just some activities. A bar-b-que and music added to the party atmosphere and the day rounded off with a heart-stopping display of football skills by the over40s when the Town team took on the Country team, with many putting on their dust-covered boots and showing that while, they may not have the speed, they still have the skills, or not!, as the huge crowd of supporters witnessed. If anyone has football photographs of yester year, we would be delighted to hear from you, as we near the completion of our club history.

COUNTY UNDER 12 LEAGUE: Asdee/Bally 2-7 John Mitchels 5-19. An understrength Asdee/Bally side went under to the Tralee side at their home ground on Saturday evening last in a one sided encounter. It was evident early in the opening half that it was going to be an uphill battle against a side that looked always having too much for the combinations side even though in fairness to the visitors; although outplayed they never threw in the towel . At the break the scoreline stood at Asdee/Bally 1-4 John Mitchels 2-12. On resumption it was Mitchels who completely took over and ran out convincing winners at the final whistle. The team consisted of Niall O Connor, Jack Hannon, Cillian Kennelly, 1pt, Oisin Healy, Patrick Mulvihill, 1-1, Darragh Healy, Pauric Fogarty, Sean O Connor, 3pts, Alex Campus, Bobby McCarron, 1-2, Oran O Neill, Sean O Connor, The team will now of a break of two weeks before they resume activity once again. Results: U-14 Co League Semi Final St Senans 6-07 Ballyheigue 3-07 Played at Ballyheigue, in sunny conditions this was a tense affair with periods of dominance by both teams. Senans started with the aid of a deceptively stiff breeze to their back which meant the Ballyheigue kick outs were limited to landing around the 30 m mark. Tomas Dillon got Senans off to a quick start with a pointed free, quickly followed by a point from play. A well taken goal by Paudric Trant ensured the scoreboard reflected Senans dominance in the first 15 minutes. Breaks from Ballyheigue were well marshalled by a solid backline especially the fullback line of Mark Moore, Liam Roos and Garry Dillon. Ballyheigue hit back with a good 7 min spell where they earned and expertly converted a penalty. However within a minute a penalty was awarded to Senans and Mikey Kelliher sent it to the top corner. As half time neared Senans needed all the scores they could get being aided by a stiff breeze. Gavin Parker and Mikey Kelliher slotted over points to leave the half time score Senans 3-06 Ballyheigue 1-03. In the 2nd half Ballyheigue chipped away at the lead eventually reducing it to 4 points although they could have had the lead but for some great goalkeeping by Eoin Relihan and the aforementioned full back line. A lovely point by Rory Mahony eased the pressure a bit and finally with 3 mins left on the clock goals from Gavin Parker and Tadgh McKenna killed off the game. It was an unfair score line to Ballyheigue who could well have got the upper hand with a bit of luck. St.Senans now play Ardfert in the final on Mon 16th May in Ballyduff @ 7pm. The Club would like to thank absolutely everybody who helped in any way to ensure an event took place that won’t be forgotten far into the future. What can be said about the 20 Stars of the Show, our fabulous Dancers?
