KERRY AMATEUR RADIO GROUP

Amateur Radio is a hobby that involves experimenting with and operating homemade and commercial radio communications equipment. It is also known as Ham Radio. Ham Radio operators (radio amateurs) enjoy using their knowledge and skill to communicate with other radio amateurs who may be nearby or half-way around the world, using radio frequencies. Amateur radio is very popular around the world, especially in USA where close to one million people are licensed. Ireland also have a very active HAM community, with most counties having clubs. Kerry has a very active group of Radio Amateurs who participate in national and international Amateur Radio events and come from a diverse range of backgrounds. Kerry Amateur Radio Group (KARG) is keen to hear from anyone that may be interested in joining the group. The range of interests within the hobby are very broad and include building electronic circuits, building antenna, communicating using voice, Morse code, digital modes, or via satellites. Anyone with an interest in electronics, physics, communications and technology will no doubt find this hobby very interesting. It is also a great way to learn about other parts of the world and meet new people. If anybody is interesting in learning more about the hobby, more information can be found on our website: www.KerryAmateurRadioGroup.com or our facebook page. Kerry Amateur Radio Group meets on the last Saturday of each month, at alternating venues in Tralee and Killarney. We also set up and operate portable from various locations around the county, so everyone is welcome to come along and see an active communications station in action, and meet other members. On Saturday 16th July, the Kerry Amateur Radio Group will be active from the Red Fox Inn (Kerry Bog Village), located on the Killorglin to Glenbeigh road from 9am until 5pm. All visitors are very welcome. On the weekend of August 21st/22nd KARG will be active from Cromwell Point Lighthouse on Valentia, participating in the International Lighthouse and Lightship Weekend (ILLW) 2016. All visitors are again very welcome. Kerry Amateur Radio Group is also interested in hearing from people in Kerry that would like to promote their business internationally via the group

KILCONLY NATIONAL SCHOOL PRINCIPAL PATRICIA BOYLE RETIRES

Patricia Boyle, the Principal of Kilconly NS has recently retired and here is an excerpt from Patricias retirement speech in the school: “First of all, I would like to thank the parents for all your cooperation throughout my time here. I have found you to be knowledgeable, skilled, open, articulate and interested in the best for your children. You were always welcome here, and I saw our school as a shared space where we worked together as partners in education. I would like to thank all the members of the Boards of Management that supported me in my endeavours down through the years. They had great faith in me and gave me free rein in so many initiatives. I’m sure at times they must have thought that I was daft, particularly when I applied for an extension for a school where the numbers of children had fallen dramatically. I applied for everything- Emergency works, Summer works, Devolved scheme – you name it –anything that I felt would enhance our school and you the parents & the Board were there to support me.” “This country is blessed with a well qualified and deeply committed teaching force, none more so than the team we have here, including of course, all the ancillary staff. I want to pay tribute to my colleagues for their support and friendship. I will always remember our shared laughter, our joys as well as our struggles. Thank you for the never-ending supply of tea in the staff-room! Thank-you too, for your support and encouragement, but mostly for your sincerity, understanding and trust. I would like to thank the most important people here today - our pupils. You always worked with me and made my job very enjoyable. Every visitor to our school, without exception, comments not just on our excellent facilities but on the atmosphere that permeates throughout and the behaviour and attitudes of you, the children. You are an exceptional bunch and I am so proud of you. It was a privilege to teach here at Kilconly and it is true to say that while I have never worked harder, it was the most fulfilling period of my teaching career. This is a unique school. I have loved working here. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to experience it.

Best of luck Patricia in your retirement, hope you get that golf handicap in order!!! Photo by Marie Rohan

LIXNAW HURLING CLUB Coiste na nOg; Our U16 ’s are at home against Abbeydorney this Tuesday evening at 7pm. Our U14’s are at home against Ballyduff this Saturday at 6pm. Fixtures; County Minor Hurling League Lixnaw V Crotta in Dromakee on Monday July 4th at 7-30pm Results; County Senior Hurling Championship Lixnaw; 0- 12 Causeway; 2-8 SENIORS; No joy for the seniors in the first round of the county senior hurling championship, they were edged out by Causeway 2-8 to 0-12 played in Lerrig last Sunday evening. Causeways ability to score goals, one in each half, proved to be the crucial scores and the difference between the teams in the end. Lixnaw, with the wind at their backs for the opening half, were two points to the good at half time, 1-2 to 0-7 but the gap should have been wider. Causeway struck for their second goal right after the break to go in front but Lixnaw responded and at the three quarter stage the teams were level. Lixnaw went in front again with a point but two Causeway points in succession put them in the driving seat. COISTE NA NOG Once again this week’s notes are dominated by Under 14 news, this time in relation to their terrific performance in Féile Peil na nÓg. Friday evening saw an influx of people to the Ballyduff to watch the four matches scheduled as part of the Féile competition. The sports field looked great and the Féile committee and parents outdid themselves with the array of home baking that was on offer in the marquis.

Ballyduff opened the competition with a match against Churchill, our boys capitalised on home field advantage and came out victorious on a score line of 1-8 to 2-0 and closed proceedings on Friday evening with a match against Ballyna. After a shaky start the boys settled down and played some fine football to win 3-5 to 1-6. Saturday morning saw Ballyduff take on the visiting club, Thomas Davis, from Dublin in what turned out to be a cracker of a match with both teams vying for a place in the Cup playoffs. Ballyduff eventually emerged with a one point victory. This earned them a trip to Legion for a place in the Cup quarter final against St Gabriel’s of Galway. Unfortunately, their Féile journey stopped there as they lost to a quality Galway side in a tightly contested match. The boys played their hearts out and they should all be proud of the way they represented their club over the weekend. Thanks to the mentors, host families, parents and members of the community who made the weekend a memorable one for the players. There was some consolation as both Ballyduff teams and the visiting Thomas Davis club paraded at half time in the senior Hurling match held in Ballyduff and then it was off to a disco where they finished off the weekend in style. Congratulations to Thomas Davis GAA who won the Shield Final in Rathkeale on Sunday. We hope they enjoyed their stay in Ballyduff and that friendships were made to last many years into the future. As Féile football dominated in most Clubs during the week, there were no other age groups in action, however all age groups continued to train this week and I’m sure their busy schedule will resume over the coming weeks.

Finally, the U13 hurlers take on Ballyheigue at home on Wednesday evening in their League semi-final, good luck to all players and mentors and please come out and show your support if you can. BALLYDUFF GAA NEWS

Senior Hurling: Our Senior hurlers lost to Kilmoyley in the first round of Garvey's Senior Hurling Championship at Abbeyorney on Sunday last. Short some players through injury Ballyduff started well and led midway in the first half but two Kilmoyley goals before halftime left them eight points down and they eventually lost by six on a 2 – 18 to 0 – 18 scoreline. Feile: Many thanks to everyone who helped out over the weekend with the Feile and County Championship game it was a busy weekend but everything went according to plan and Martin Scally Feile Chairman who attended on Friday evening was loud in his praise on the organisation and hospitality he encountered so take a bow everyone. Well done

LISTOWEL EMMETS LADIES

Féile Peil na nÓg Following many months of planning Féile Peil na nÓg has come to an end. What a fantastic weekend we all had watching some exceptional display of young ladies football and forming new friendships with our vising clubs. The weekend started off with our Visiting Ladies Team from Portlaoise arriving at 1.30pm, they were joined by the Visiting Boys Team, Killygarry from Cavan. An official welcome and reception was held for both visiting teams at the clubhouse where our Town Mayor, Jimmy Moloney welcomed both teams along with representatives from Listowel Emmets. Thanks to Louise Moriarty and Brenda McVeigh for the fantastic catering and spread of food they organised both for the official welcome and throughout the ladies games on Friday evening and Saturday morning. Our U14 Emmets Ladies were led by U14 Manager Sean Hennelly and mentors Riobard Pierse, Noel Hilliard, Joe Kelly and Helen McCarthy. They were placed in Division 2 Group C along with Castleisland Desmonds, Portlaoise and Killygarry Girls (Cavan). Before the first game began at 4.30pm, Olivia Stack from our U16 Ladies Team sang Amhrán na bhfiann. Round 1 & 2 Games were played on Friday evening in Frank Sheehy Park, Listowel: Emmets vs Castleisland / Killygarry vs Portlaoise / Portlaoise vs Castleisland / Killygarry vs Emmets.

Saturday morning saw Round 3 played in each host club grounds where we played our host club Portlaoise who secured themselves a position in the cup quarter final. Following Round 3 it was off to Farranfore on Saturday at 1pm for our U14 Ladies to play in the Shield Quarter Finals vs St Rynaghs (Offaly). At full time Emmets were tied with St Rynaghs with a score of Emmets 2:1 vs St Rynaghs 0:7. Extra time had to be played which saw St Ryanaghs clock up another 3 points with a missed goal opportunity from Listowel. Our girls held their head and fought back hard and Listowel were awarded a penalty. Aoife Horgan buried the ball in the back of the net and yet again with 2 mins to go both teams were level. Listowel continued to fight hard but St Rynaghs had lady luck on their side and managed to clock up 2 more points in the final minute or so to win the quarter final. Well done to our U14 girls who played with all their heart in Farranfore on Saturday and were just unlucky on the day not to make it to the Shield Semi Final on Sunday morning.

Our visiting Club Portlaoise participated in the Cup Quarter Final in Farranfore where they played Kilcullen (Kildare). At half time Portlaoise were 9 points behind. However, the Portlaoise girls weren’t about to give up easily and fought back hard in the second half getting to within 4 points of their opponents but ran out of time to complete the comeback. Congratulations to Killygarry (Cavan) Ladies who provided everyone in Listowel on Friday night with an exceptional display of Ladies Football. Killygarry went on to become the All Ireland Division 2 U14 Ladies Cup Winners for 2016 on Sunday afternoon where they beat Kilcullen (Kildare).

Following our trip to Farranfore it was back to Listowel for the Parade at 7pm where in excess of 20 Clubs participated. Following the defeats in Farranfore for both Emmets and Portlaoise the girls spirits were lifted with the excitement of the parade and heading to the Mermaids for the disco. A big thank you to Anne Brosnan and the Presentation Primary School Band for leading out the parade.

Once the parade was finished it was off to the Mermaids where our Emmets & Portlaoise Players were presented with a Memorial Trophy and group photo of both teams. Jim White, Emmets Ladies Chairman made a presentation to Portlaoise GAA Manager and Mentors. A huge thank you to Anne McNamee for taking the group photo on Friday evening and to Brenda Pierse for organising all the awards for us.

Portlaoise presented Emmets with a beautifully bound book on Portlaoise GAA over the past 100 years and piece of glass to mark the occasion. Once the presentations were complete the boys and girls from Emmets, Portlaoise and Killygarry enjoyed a disco until 10pm and great friendships were formed amongst all the players. Senans, Emmetts and Finuge are the other contenders in this division.

We are glad to report that we are putting the finishing touches to our book on the history of Beale GAA. Three years later and it is almost ready to go to print! We look forward to the launch in the autumn. This is your last opportunity to contact us If anyone has photographs of yester years. Liam Browne, Jimmy Buckley, Paudie Mulvihill, John Hennessy, Catherine Ellis and Bríd Griffin would be delighted to hear from you.

Beale GAA are delighted to have been involved in Féile Peil na nÓg 2016. Many games were played over the past few days and a great social atmosphere abounded as our under-14s and numerous visiting teams displayed their footballing skills. The weekend ended with a very enjoyable bar-b-q on the beach on Saturday evening when the guest of honour was Bomber Liston. Afterwards the adults adjourned to the Bunker Bar, where Tony Moore hosted a very entertaining question and answer session with Bomber and Ogie Moran. Beale GAA wish to thank the many businesses in Ballybunion and afar for sponsorship of this hugely successful event. FEILE: All mainstream football came to a standstill this weekend as the big Feile Peil na nOg Weekend finally arrived. Beale hosted a team from Longford, Carrick Sarsfields and it would be true to say that both players supporters and club officials enjoyed an excellent rapport from the start. Excellent football was played on Friday evening in Ballybunion. Beale played Tarbert in a game which they won, sore Beale 5-09 Tarbert 0-02. They also played Enniskillen Gaels in a game they lost on a score of Beale 3-02 Enniskillen Gaels 3-05. Once the games were over, Food and Music was laid on for everyone on the pitch and a huge thank you to everyone who helped as it was all hands on deck to get everyone fed. Saturday morning saw Beale headed to Finuge to play Feenagh of Carlow in the quarter final of the Cup. In a tight, tense and physical game Beale lost out by just 1 point on a final score of 1-04 to 1-05. Though disappointed and dejected our boys did us proud. It was into Listowel then to take part in the Feile parade and then onto Ballybunion for a B-B-Q on the beach where both teams gathered for fun, music and food. We were joined by Eoin (Bomber) Liston who took photos with everyone and gave an inspirational talk to the young footballers gathered on the beach. Once the under 14’s had headed home with their host families, the supporters and mentors headed to the Bunker Bar for an hour Q & A with Bomber and Ogie Moran in what was a wonderful treat for locals and visitors alike.

The effort, time and commitment put into the preparation of this weekend by Beale Bord na nOg and the Feile Committee, with the full support and help of the Beale Senior Board must be commended. Our Pitch and facilities looked amazing for the weekend. The Ladies who provided food for everyone hungry tired and thirsty soul, directed by Mairead O’Neill. We would also like to acknowledge that none of this would be possible without the support and help from all sections of the community. We would like to thank Ballybunion Tidy Towns, Ballybunion Sea Rescue, The Senior Beale Club and the field Committee, Referee Ian Blake, Photographers Ita Hannon and Marie Rohan, Danny Houlihan, the Ballybunion piper, Our Sponsors McCarthy Insurance, Sundaes Ice Cream Parlour and the Pavilion Amusements and not forgetting our host families, the parents and families of the players for opening your homes to the Carrick Sarsfields team and for your commitment all year to date.

The John West Féile na nÓg weekend was a fantastic success in Mountcoal with St. Senans hosting Longford Slashers on Friday evening. The pitch was in fabulous condition for the weekend thanks to the great work by all in the previous days. Our U14s were drawn in a strong group with Na Gaeil, Lucan Sarsfields and Longford Slashers. With a strong breeze on the night favouring the teams playing into the dressing room end St.Senans first game was against Na Gaeil, after a short break Senans took on Lucan Sarsfields. Senans played well but were beaten by stronger teams on the night. When the matches were over the Longford Slashers met their host families and headed home for a short rest before returning to the club house for a night of fun activities and entertainment. A great time was had by all and then it was home for some well earned sleep. On Saturday morning it was back to Mountcoal for the meeting of St Senans and Longford Slashers. The visitors won this encounter 3-06 to 2-04. After a short break for refreshments it was on to Connolly Park for St Senans V Clonmel Commercials. Senans battled hard but were a point down at half time. On the restart the sides exchanged points before Clonmel rattled the Senans net and ran out winners. This brought the on pitch action to a close for Senans. The Senans contingent then went onto the Féile parade in Listowel where the juveniles represented the club with great dignity and pride. The team were a credit to their families, coaches, club and county throughout the weekend. The matches were played in a fair, friendly and sporting manner. On Saturday night the Halfway bar played host to the Longford Slashers mentors, supporters and parents. There was a lively session of music, storytelling and dancing. Music was provided by local musicians joined by Longford musicians. A huge thank you to our main sponsor Allman Contracts, the host families, coaches, all who helped, and the club officers that gave so much of their free time in recent weeks to make this event a success.

FINUGE / SENANS LADIES

FEILE U14’s: We had a brilliant weekend at John West Feile 2016. The weekend started with a visit to John Mitchels Complex, Tralee on Friday where they first faced Scartaglen. FT score: F/SS 2-03 Scart 2-04. Next the girls faced London, this game finished on a score line of F/SS 5-14 Lon 0-0. Friday evening the girls enjoyed celebrations with brother club St. Senans in Mountcoal. Saturday morning the girls had home advantage over visitors Scotland. FT score F/SS 7-07 Scot 0-01. The girls progressed to the cup quarter final which was played in Dr. Crokes, Lewis Road against Armagh Harps. What a game! The girls were very evenly matched and the score line at the end of normal time was all level at 3-02 a piece. After extra time neither team had managed to gain advantage over the other, so the game was decided by a nail biting shoot out – F/SS 0-2 Armagh 0-01. That evening the team, along with other members of the club took part in the Feile parade in Listowel and enjoyed games and a BBQ with brother club, Finuge. Sunday afternoon the girls were out again for game 5 of the tournament – the cup semi-final, against Na Gaeil. This game was played in Kilcummin. Unfortunately, this was the end of the road for our Feile journey – the game finished on a score line of F/SS 1-0 Na Gaeil 2-06. The club would like to extend thanks to all supporters and families, to team mentors Joe O’Flaherty, Bertie Dillon and Mary Dillon and to the players themselves who gave their heart and souls to their Feile campaign. We are immensely proud of all your achievements girls – well done!

PRECIOUS MOTHER OF JESUS Mother of Devine Grace, You can find a way where there is no way, please hear my prayer and grant my request. Amen. Say 6 times daily for 3 days. M.K.

You never said I’m leaving, You never said Goodbye. You were gone before I knew it, And only God knows why. A million times I needed you, A million times I cried, If love alone could have saved you, You never would have died. In life I loved you dearly, In death I love you still. In my heart you hold a place, That no one could ever fill. It broke my heart to loose you, But you didn’t go alone. For part of me went with you, The day God took you home. Lots of Love always from your loving Son Ronnie xx

PRAYER TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

Holy Spirit, you who makes me see everything and shows me the way to reach my ideal, you who gives me the divine gift to forgive and forget all the wrong that is done to me and you who are in all instances of my life with me. I, in this short dialogue, want to thank you for everything, and affirm once more that I never want to be separated from you no matter how great the material desires may be. I want to be with you and my loved ones in your perpetual glory. Amen. Say this prayer three consequetive days without stating the request, after the third the request will be granted no matter how difficult it may be. Promise to publish this as soon as your request is granted. D.B.

THE MIRACLE PRAYER Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked many favours. This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your own favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never been known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. D.H.
