THE GOOCH LAUNCHES NEW BANK AT ST. JOSEPHS SECONDARY SCHOOL
€2.69M FOR LISTOWEL COMMUNITY HOSPITAL DEENIHAN
Minister for the Diaspora and Fine Gael TD for Kerry, Jimmy Deenihan, has said that the announcement of over €2.69 million for Listowel Community Hospital will make a significant difference for elderly people in our community.

St. Joseph’s Secondary School was proud to announce the launch of their school bank ‘The Bear in the Big Blue Bank’ on Wednesday last. GAA celebrity Colm ‘The Gooch’ Cooper made a very special guest appearance on the day to officially open the bank and give the team some valuable advice on financial management. The blue theme of the bank is to highlight the importance of autism awareness. A bake sale was held on the day to raise funds, which will be donated to the ASD Unit at Scoil Iosagain, Ballybunion. Staff and students from Scoil Iosagain’s ASD Unit visited St. Joseph’s on the day to celebrate the launch and its wonderful cause. A special thank you to all involved. The school bank team will now go on to compete at the AIB Build a Bank Regionals competition which will be held in Cork in March.
“Having campaigned for investment in the Community hospital in Listowel, I am very pleased that such a significant commitment has been made to the care of the elderly in North Kerry. This very significant investment reflects the Government’s determination to maintain the current numbers of public nursing home beds and to ensure all public nursing homes will be compliant with HIQA standards by 2021.
"The refurbishment work on the hospital will be completed by 2018. This will come as positive news for the excellent nursing staff, as well as the patients and their families. “Listowel Community Hospital has received two very positive reports recently from HIQA and the HSE.”
BACK ON THE ROAD AGAIN!
After an interval of 36 years Listowel Drama Group returns to the festival circuit with their acclaim production of “Blithe Spirit” by Noel Coward.
Listowel Drama Group now in its 72nd year has a proud tradition of participating at festivals since it was founded. In the late 1940’s it was a regular visitor to the Kerry and Lord Cork Drama festivals despite a less than auspicious start, in which one adjudicator advised the ladies and gentlemen of Listowel Dramatic Movement would be better advised if they would engage in a more productive way of passing the long Winter evening and suggested that they take up the art of “knitting”. Fortunately this advice went unheeded and the Drama Group went on to achieve all Ireland success in both one act and three act competitions with such plays as “The Magic Glasses” and “Sive”.
ALL BOOKED OUT IN TARBERT!!
Pictured below is the ‘motley crew’ who make up Tarbert Theatre Players. January 29th, 30th and 31st have already sold out when this drama group present Diarmy. Tarbert Community Centre is about to be turned into a theatre. The stage will be extended, the stage curtains hung, the stage lighting adjusted, the sound system prepared and the stage set built into place. Interest in Diarmy is enormous, outside of the Tarbert area as well. Vicar Joe at St John’s Theatre Listowel reports that there is a lively interest in Diarmy and bookings are filling quickly. Joe will host the Tarbert Theatre Players at St John’s on Friday February 5th, Saturday February 6th and Sunday February 7th. The fact that this is a brand new theatre group and that it has a lot of young people in a big cast, makes it all the more attractive for the audience. The play is written by Mary Lavery Carrig of Tarbert and Mary is the director/producer. The exciting drama is set in the local rural southwest, exploring loyalty, love and loss.
However the group has not been seen at a festival since 1976 when they presented “The Couple Beggar” by Frank Moriarty produced by the late great Bill Kearney. The group are eagerly looking forward to the new challenge and both cast and stage crew are confident that they will acquit themselves with distinction and do Listowel proud.
Blithe Spirit is directed by Owen Mc Mahon and Imelda Dowling. Imelda also takes a leading role. She has been the driving force behind this bold move and states “we are anxious to find out where we are in terms of standards of acting and production and we are prepared for any praise or criticism from the various adjudicators as we feel it can only be for the good of the group and the development and raising of theatrical standards”.
The play will have a pre-festival run at St. Johns Theatre from Thursday the 11th of February to Saturday the 14th of February and this is an opportunity not to be missed by the Theatre going patrons of Kerry. Thereafter Listowel Drama Group festival dates are as follows : • Knockaderry, County Limerick Friday 4th March 2016. • Scarrif, County Clare Saturday 5th March 2016. • Castleisland, County Kerry 12th March 2016. • Charleville, County Cork 13th March 2016. • Ending in Holy Cross, County Tipperary on Monday 14th of March 2016.
Listowel Drama Group, which has thrilled and entertained the audiences in Listowel for over seventy years deserves all the support it gets in its artistic endeavours and to ensure that The Stage Shall Never Die.

ROIBEARD THORNTON For most of us, and including his family, the first few hours of Tuesday morning January 19th 2016 were a typical usual run of the mill type of Tuesday morning. Slowly around lunch time the distressing news began to filter through. News that would leave our community and club in shock and in mourning and a very dark cloud hanging over it once again. It was with great sadness indeed that we all learned that Roibeard Thornton had been fatally injured in a car accident in Limerick. The news was devastating for everyone who knew him and particularly for those who were close to his heart. During a career with his beloved Lixnaw which began at Lixnaw Boys N.S. and thereafter progressing to Lixnaw juvenile section of the club before developing to minor, u21 and senior level, Roibeard was the proud holder of 1 County Minor Championship medal (1997), 2 County u21 (1999 and 2002) and 1 county senior (2005) among many other sporting achievements. He also tasted success with Kerry u21 hurlers in 2002 winning the All Ireland U21 B championship. Roibeard was a pleasure to work with at all times, a gentleman both on and off the pitch. He was hard working, decent and honourable, a credit to his family and his club. He always managed to engage with his friends and neighbours whenever he was back in the area. Roibeard was reposed at his home on Friday evening last which was attended by large crowds. Removal to Milford Church took place on Saturday morning where Requiem Mass was celebrated. He was accompanied to Kilmurry Cemetery by Guards of Honour from both Lixnaw Hurling Club and Finuge Football Club before he was laid to rest. Sympathy is extended to his wife Niamh, daughter Sadhbh, parents Sean & Jody, brother Eoin, sisters, Aoife, Una and Orla, other relatives, neighbours and large circle of friends. Rest in Peace Roibeard and thanks very much for everything.

U-21 CHAMPIONSHIP Tarbert Moyvane 1-6 St Senan’s 0-7. A crucial goal by Timmy Noonan in the final five minutes was the crucial score in this very entertaining North Kerry U-21 championship game. Played in an excellent Ballybunion pitch Tarbert Moyvane playing with the wind in the first half were very rusty in their efforts and it was Senan’s who led at half time by 0-3 to 0-2. Scores in the second half were also at a premium but as the game wore on it was the combination outfit who were playing the better football missing a clear goal opportunity plus a penalty. Highlights of the game was the wonderful catch by Shea McDonnell that led to the crucial goal and the marking by minor Michael Heaphy on the skillful Paudie Quille. The team now take on Knock/Brosna in the final with venue and date to be confirmed.

CLONMEL COURSING All coursing enthusiasts in the parish will be making the annual pilgrimage to Clonmel next weekend for the Centenary running of the National Coursing Meeting over the famed Powerstown Park stretch. This year’s renewal is eagerly awaited by local coursing supporters as it will see four qualifiers from the Ballyduff Club, each having high hopes. First to qualify was the Dan Lynch trained ‘Isn’t She Lovely’ , she collected her ticket by winning a very competitive Oaks trial stake in Milltown Malbay. She is jointed owned by Dan’s wife Mary and Bernie Holian from Galway. She is a lively contender and is priced at 14/1 for outright honours. ‘Downton Minnie’ gave owners Eamon & Kristin O’Sullivan a timely Christmas present by winning in Ballybeggan Park Tralee. Minnie ran impressively throughout and is chalked up at 25/1 to win this classic. Tom, Evelyn and Kieran Houlihan had the honour of collecting the 64th and final golden ticket for the Oaks when their bitch ‘Chevalto’ won in Macroom. She is jointly owned by Tom and his granddaughter Chloe. This lady showed some great pace in winning by opening up big margins in all her courses and is also available at 25/1. Our one Derby prospect is ‘Tellmemorelies’ trained by James Allen for the local ‘Strike a Booze’ Syndicate. This syndicate is made up of 15 locals from the parish. Their dog collected his passport to Clonmel by winning at our local meeting in Ballyduff and if those celebrations are anything to go by you can expect his supporters to raise the roof in Powerstown Park if he is in the shakeup come Sunday. ‘Tellmemorelies’ is priced at 16/1 to become Derby champion. Good Luck to all connections. Coursing commences on Friday January 29th and concludes on Sunday January 31st. PROPHETS OF ETERNAL FJORD By Kim Leine Idealistic, misguided Morten Falck is a newly ordained priest sailing to Greenland in 1787 to convert the Inuit to the Danish church. A rugged outpost battered by unremittingly harsh winters, Sukkertoppen is simmering with the threat of dissent; natives from neighboring villages have unified to reject Danish rule and establish their own settlement atop Eternal Fjord.
As Falck becomes involved with those in his care his ambitious catechist, a lonely traders wife, and a fatalistic widow he comes to love his faith and reputation are compromised. The internationally acclaimed novelist Kim Leine charts the tragic events that connect these seemingly disparate lives, while illuminating the brutal and tender impulses of those seeking redemption and the shifting line between religion and mysticism. In the tradition of We, the Drowned, The Prophets of Eternal Fjord is rich in earthy detail and Dickensian pathos, a visceral panorama of a fragile colony caught in the throes of history."

LISTOWEL RUGBY
Listowel U14s lost out to Killarney in a hard fought game in Listowel last Saturday. Both teams showed a high level of skill despite the difficult conditions. John Carmody was a real “livewire” at scrumhalf. Kevin Lowney and Joseph Murphy combined well to feed Denis Dowling who broke the grainline repeatedly from centre to give us forward momentum. After conceding an early try we dominated possession for most of the first half but failed to convert our chances, going in 10 points down at half time. The second half was fiercely contested with 1 try scored by each team. Following a superb turnover by Ethan O’Connor, Shane Healy showed his exceptional talents as a broken field runner to beat numerous defenders before being illegally tackled short of the line. We failed to get over the line from the resultant penalty but from the next attack Murtie Moriarty powered over to score with Kevin Lowney adding the conversion. This put to put us within reach but he final whistle came too early. It was an energy sapping match for the tight forwards with lots of scrums on a really muddy pitch but they battled on strongly to the end. Our top player on the day was Cale Sweeney who supplemented his excellent breakdown work with powerful carries in open play
U13 Girls Blitz - The U13 Listowel took the 4g pitch in Limerick LIT last Sunday 24th, they played 4 games of which they won a few, but more importantly they showed off what they had been training for over the rainy months. This was fantastic exposure for the girls in regards to the growing popularity of this sport for girls who all have different abilities speed & strength and obviously ball skills. We are growing our number week on week and are always looking for new player, these girls are very new to the game but are enjoying it immensely. For more information please contact : U13 Manager Marie McKenna: 0863739623 Kieran Reilly Director of Girls Rugby 0871341805 - kieran.reilly@gmail.com U15 Girls v Youghal Munster Cup Quarter Final The U15 took to the soggy pitch in Listowel Town Park with great focus and determination. They didn't allow complacency to effect their performance and executionof their tactics which allowed for the condition on the day. With strong ball carrying from the forwards, the girls didn't have all their own way as youghal has a front row which really tested our girls in the ruck. The fantastic runs from Murieann Kennelly and solid team performance from Clare Beasley who backed up her teammates when they tested the youghal defence. Rebecca Mason showed great skill in her placed kicking that increased the girls lead. Meadbh McElligot became a constant threat in midfield, Deirdre Halloran was always available to make a tackle and to receive a pass to which she made great yards for her team. Mary Kate on the opposite side of the pitch was excellent in her defensive performance.
U18 Girls v Thurles/Cashel Munster Cup Quarter Final The U18 like the u15 had a challenge awaiting them in order to join the U15 in semi final against Carrick On Suir. They had the formidable strong team of Thurles/Cashel who have a strong history of girls rugby. But with this expectation came great performances fromthe forward pack massive tackles from Hayley Betts and Ciara Shine this laid down a marker that the girls meant business, but the opposition did match in some area of the pitch especially at the breakdown which was expertly officiated by Aidan Mulvihill. The games turned quickly with a cross the field pass through the back line to which Molly Cluney who is turning into a silent assassin on the wing going over the white wash superbly, of which Muirne Wall made a lovely conversion to give a early lead. This early score encouraged the girls to move on and score again with a expertly pop pass from the tackled Katie Ahern to which Aishling Brosnan ran on to which cheering supporter acknowledge. This was very accomplished performance which has been orchestrated from the experienced coach JP 'Chip' Vivier and his coaches. The girls move on to this weekend which is against Carrick On Suir which if they were to win would bring them into their first final.

Successful Parnells development workshop: A strong attendance of dedicated volunteers met at Kerins O'Rahillys on Friday the 22nd of January, at the invitation of Parnells Chairperson Dermot Reen. Our 2 excellent facilitators from Kerry County Board formed us into a number of discussion panels and for the next 2 hours the major elements of a Club Plan were discussed and debated among the attendees. At the end of this lively and fruitful session, Dermot took an action, to collect the recorded feedback of all the groups and to distribute the relevant sections to a number of nominated moderators. Each moderator will have a small team of volunteers from the night, to collate and organise this material and draft it into a submission for inclusion in the Parnells 5 year plan. Dermot is anxious to have the Club Plan in place before April, so the groups now have a short number of weeks to prepare their submissions. The club plan will be organised into a number of major sections, including general areas relating to coaching, management structures, facilities, finance and communications. This weekend the U15 (above) and U18 (below) are seeking to get to another final in which they have a chance of winning the converted Munster Cups. This is have been meteoric success for the girls section which has been established only three years ago. If both teams were to win against a formiable oppenent of Carrick On Suir who have a long history in girls rugby this Sat away (30th Jan), it would be the teams 4th final. Along the way in this competition they have played & won against the giants of rugby St Marys, Youghal RFC & Thurles/Cashel. We have dedicated coaches who are IRFU qualified, excellent support from the families and friends. Hopefully this Saturday we will get one step closer to the promise land and bring some silverware back to Kerry.
The Listowel side dominated the first half and early goals from Jack Behan and Cathal Kennelly helped to establish a nine point lead approaching half time. A goal just before the break gave renewed hope to the Waterford side. The score at the short whistle was St. Michael’s 2-07 - St. Augustine’s 1-04. St. Augustine’s began the second half in very determined fashion reducing the deficit to three points, 2-07 to 1-07. St. Michaels lifted the siege with points from Sam Tarrant and a superb individual effort by David Behan. The Listowel side then took control and a goal from Conor Kennelly and a succession of points put the game beyond the reach of a gallant Dungarvan side. The final will take place on Sunday 31st January in Lewis Road Killarney at 2pm
