CLANMAURICE CREDIT UNION PRIMARY SCHOOLS QUIZ

ABBEYFEALE DRAMA GROUP PRESENT ‘SIVE’

Primary School students from ten schools in the common bond of Clanmaurice Credit Union Ltd. put their knowledge and skills to the test in the Sports Hall of Causeway Comprehensive School last Sunday as they competed in the annual Credit Union Schools Quiz competition. Forty seven teams from Ballincrossig, Ballyduff, Bouleenshere, Drumnacurra, Glenderry, Kilmoyley, Killury, Lixnaw Boys, Lixnaw Girls and Sliabh a’ Mhadra National Schools competed and the competition was intense with the narrowest of margins separating the teams at the end of a most enthralling and engaging afternoon.

57 years ago John B Keane’s masterpiece Sive was staged for the first time in his native Listowel. John B Keane had a tremendous understanding of human nature and rural life and portrayed this uncanny genius of observation in ''Sive''.

Bouleenshere NS were victorious in the U11 competition with a team consisting of Matthew Boyle, Charlie Fitzgerald, Ava Cronin & Sam Fitzgerald. In second place were Niamh Gentleman, Bobby Breen, Gearoid Harty & Eoin Stack from Glenderry NS. Third place went to Sara O’Sullivan, Conor Donegan, Oisin O’Callaghan & Shawna Quinlan from Sliabh a’Mhadra NS.

The story revolves around Sive (Niamh Healy) a young and beautiful orphan who lives with her uncle Mike (Seamus Lane), his wife Mena (Joan O’Connell and her mother Nanna (Mary Murphy). An old man Sean Dota (Dick Woulfe) enlists the services of Thomasheen Sean Rua ( Richie Roche|) - a local matchmaker - to organise a marriage between himself and Sive. Thomaseen armed with the sum of two hundred pounds convinces Mena to help arrange the marriage. However, Sive is in love with a young man Liam Scuab (Billy Quirke), but Liam is not considered suitable as he is a cousin of illegitimate Sive’s father and is refused permission to marry Sive. The poor girl is distraught, but is forced to do the will of her uncle and his bitter wife.

Ailish Segal, CEO of Clanmaurice Credit Union Ltd. said the aim of the Quiz is to encourage learning and teamwork among primary school pupils within an enjoyable environment. Teamwork was in clear evidence at Causeway on Sunday as the members of each of the forty seven teams pooled their knowledge and skills to answer twelve rounds of six questions.

In the U13 Kilmoyley NS featuring Ellen Cooke, Kellie Meehan, Amy Corridon & Robert Monahan emerged as the victors. There was a tie between two Glenderry teams for second place, the teams consisted of Muiris Harty, Sarah Cantillon, Laura Linnane & Feilim O’Sullivan on one of the teams and Evan Casey, Daniel O’Loughlin, Caoimhe Flahive & Emma Woods on the other. In third place were Joshua Diggins, Ciara Donegan, Erin O’Sullivan & Keith Flynn from Sliabh a’Mhadra NS. John O’Regan, Chairman of Clanmaurice Credit Union Ltd. said the scoring of the teams was particularly competitive this year while the points’ difference between the prize winners and the rest of the teams was minimal. He said that it was a wonderful occasion and a great learning experience for all and he complimented all the participants, their teachers and their parents on their involvement in, and contribution to, the successful outcomes of the Quiz. Casey’s Clubhouse beginning Tuesday, February 16 and continuing its run on February 18, 20/21/23/25/27 and finishing on Sunday, February 28. KERRY NURSING HOMES BOOSTED BY MAJOR INVESTMENT PACKAGE – SPRING

Arthur Spring TD has welcomed news that the future of Listowel, Killarney and Caherciveen Community Hospitals have been secured, having been included in an unprecedented investment package for public nursing homes. The funding has been confirmed by Labour’s Minister for the Elderly, Kathleen Lynch, and the plan benefits 90 centres nationally which will either be refurbished or replaced. Deputy Spring said: “I am pleased to confirm that Caherciveen, Killarney and Listowel Community Hospitals have been included in this unprecedented investment package for public nursing homes. The future of these public nursing homes is now secure as a result of this announcement, something which is very reassuring for those living in these homes and indeed their families throughout the county. Listowel Community Hospital will undergo a €2.69 million refurbishment to be completed in 2018, Caherciveen €2.25 million with completion in 2020 and a new €23.4 million Killarney Community Hospital will be built with expected completion by 2021. Deputy Spring continued: “While residents and their families no doubt attest to the excellence of the care received, many agree that the physical environment needs improvement. That is what is behind today’s major announcement by Kathleen Lynch and I want to thank her for favourably entertaining my continuous requests for funding for these very worthwhile projects. “This is the most extensive investment in public nursing home facilities in the history of the State and it reflects the Government’s determination to maintain the current public nursing home bed stock. It also strongly underlines the Labour Party’s commitment to stand up for the elderly in our communities.

In doing so it is necessary to acknowledge positive achievements by those young people, whether these are in the fields of voluntary work in the community, sport, or education. L ISTOWEL / TRALEE U18s TO CONTEST F I RS T M UN S TE R F IN A L Listowel/Tralee U18's prepare for their first Munster cup final since setting up just three years ago. It's been a long tough road for the girls who took on St. Mary's of Limerick away and stole the victory on the day, next up was Thurles/ Cashel at home where the North Kerry ladies showed from the start they were the much stronger team, this saw them through to the Munster Cup semi final The prospect of a long journey away to a well established Carrick On Suir side may have seemed daunting, but the hunger these girls have for the game was shown on the pitch as they secured their place in the final in the dying minutes of the game with a try from Muirne Wall. They now prepare for the final which takes place on February 13th, this is a massive achievement for the girls and their coaches, everyone at Listowel RFC wish the girls the very best of luck in the final

GIRLS RUGBY The U15 Listowel/Tralee Girls Rugby Team has been picked to go on at half time in the Irish Women’s 6 nation game v Wales in Donnybrook Stadium on this Saturday February 6th. The Team was picked out of all the u15 teams in Munster to represent the province. They will play against another province on the day at the half time break. They will also have the duty of a guard of honor for the two teams. This is a brilliant opportunity and also reward from the girls, coaches and clubs involved that have worked hard to promote girls rugby in Kerry. Some of the players and parents would not have seen women's rugby and will now get to see their heroes in the green jersey defend the six nation in their opening campaign. There will be two players in the Irish squad from Kerry, Ciara Griffin & Zoe Grattage and also Maz Reilly who has been a great supporter of girl’s rugby in Kerry. They will experience a great atmosphere in Donnybrook Stadium which will showcase the very best in international women's rugby. We have been in existence for only 3 years and in that time we have established U15 & U18 squads. This year Listowel RFC and Tralee RFC have coordinated and set up their own u13 teams and in time this will double the amount of Kerry girls participating in rugby. This success is not possible without the backing from the respective Club Boards. FIVE YEAR PLAN Ballyduff GAA Club is embarking on a Five Year Plan. The Plan will include Developments, Coaching, Finance, and will plan where the Club hopes to be in five years. A Public Meeting will be held later in the year, in the meantime if anyone has any ideas & would like to be part of the Committee please contact any Officer to make your suggestions to the Club. FEILE NA NOG Féile Peil na nOg is being hosted this year in Kerry. This is one of the biggest events in the GAA calendar. Two under 14 teams, boys & girls, will be based in Ballyduff from June 23rd – 26th. This could mean between 200 & 250 visitors to our locality over that weekend. If anyone can help with accommodation or open their house as a B&B please contact any Club member. Our own Club has encountered hospitality on their many Féile trips around the country. Now let’s give something back and make these people welcome. More details as they become available. QUIZ Sliabh a' Mhadra N.S. had a successful day on Sunday last when they participated in the Credit Union Quiz in Causeway with the U-11 team of Sarah O'Sullivan, Conor Donegan, Oisin O'Callaghan and Shawna Quinlan coming third. The U-13 team, comprising of Joshua Diggins, Ciara Donegan, Erin O'Sullivan and Keith Flynn also came third. Congratulations and well done to both teams.

CAUSEWAY CAMOGIE CLUB Camogie training for girls born from 2002 to 2005 in the Astro Turf, Causeway every Tuesday beginning on February 2nd from 6.00pm – 7.00pm. Cost is €2. Please bring a hurley & helmet if you have them (we will provide them if needed). This is open to girls from any parish (there is no parish rule in camogie unlike hurling). This is a great way to make new friends while learning a new sport. Parents are welcome to stay for the hour and watch or help out if they wish. DEATHS Once again we have lost a member of our community. The funeral of Emma O'Brien, nee Holly took place at the beginning of the week. Old habits die hard and when you are in business for more than one generation the name rarely changes and so she was known to most of us as Emma Holly from Holly's shop. She worked hard and provided a service seldom seen in rural villages. With the help of her husband Jack, who passed away four years ago on Christmas Eve, she built a new shop but still provided the same service and keen prices. Ill health forced her to make changes and the business is now leased. Her funeral Mass took place on Monday in the Church of the Assumption, Moyvane followed by burial in Ahavoher Cemetery. The Mass was celebrated by Fr. Kevin McNamara, P.P. assisted by Fr. Brendan O'Callaghan, Knockanure, Fr. John O'Connor, Tarbert and Fr. Walsh, Tralee. When Moyvane Church was being built, Fr. Walsh's father, Paddy worked on the building and stayed with Emma's parents during that time. It was good to see Paddy at her funeral Mass. The friendship remained over all those years and it was nice to see it continue in this manner. Sincere sympathy to her son Ivan, brother Denis, his wife Kay her Aunt Mary, niece and nephew and many relatives. Terry Dunne, who took over the business following Emma's illness, must be complimented on the respect shown during the days following her death and over the removal and burial allowing the staff time to attend her funeral Mass. Not many businesses close now on occasions such as this. Hopefully the shop will serve our community far into the future as it is now the only Supermarket in Moyvane. The death also took place last week, in Dublin, of Pat Cunningham also of the Village. Pat was son of Billy and Jo Cunningham and brother of the late Eddie. He is survived by his wife, Margaret and son David, his sister Mary Carmel and brother Maurice. His funeral took place in Cabinteely. Tess (Pelican) Geoghegan Grouse Lodge Kilcolman Ardagh wife of the late Tom also passed away last week. Sympathy to her son Stephen daughter Joanne and brother Eamon Pelican. May they all rest in peace.

EXPOSURE

By Helen Dunmore By the Sunday Times bestselling author of The Lie. Forbidden love, intimate betrayal and the devastating power of exposure drive Helen Dunmore's remarkable new novel. London, November, 1960: the Cold War is at its height. Spy fever fills the newspapers, and the political establishment knows how and where to bury its secrets. When a highly sensitive file goes missing, Simon Callington is accused of passing information to the Soviets, and arrested. His wife, Lily, suspects that his imprisonment is part of a cover-up, and that more powerful men than Simon will do anything to prevent their own downfall. She knows that she too is in danger, and must fight to protect her children. But what she does not realise is that Simon has hidden vital truths about his past, and may be found guilty of another crime that carries with it an even greater penalty.

U12 B's: Our U12s B team beat Camp Utd 4-1 in Tanavalla on Saturday last. It was a game of 2 halves as there was a strong breeze supporting the home side in the 1st half and they made it count with 3 goals coming from the boots of Tony Boland, Liam Connolly and a Chris McQuaid free from near the half way line. In the second half Camp pushed on and tested the our defence but they stood strong until an own goal gave Camp a fighting chance and they kept the pressure on only for listowel to break away and seal victory with a cool finish from Man of the Match Tony Boland. Both sides deserve great credit for playing good soccer under difficult conditions. Listowel team. K Mackessy, T Pierce, C McElligott, J McElligott, J Carty, R Mahony, C McQuaid, T Boland, L Connolly and J Galvin. National Cup last 32: Our U13 team put up gallant performance on Sunday in the National Cup away to Riverstown of Cork. Yet again lady luck wasn't on our side as we went out to a strong physical Riverstown side. We found ourselves 1 down after 12 minutes, but fair play to the boys and girls they

rallied and got back into the tie with a super strike by Emmett Kelly to leave the half time score 1 a piece. We rallied but found ourselves 2 1 down after 8 minutes of the second half. With nothing to lose we pushed on but to no avail as Riverstown got their third...and put the game to bed. Best on the day for Celtic were Dylan Quinn, Ben O Connor, Thomas O Connor and Aoife Horgan. We want to wish a speedy recovery to Aoife who suffered an injury during the match. We wish the very best of luck to Riverstown in the next round. U16's: Our U16 team drew 1.1 with Killarney Celtic in their first home game of the season on Saturday last. Cristobal Montes scored the goal. LISTOWEL RUGBY

Listowel U14s boys beat Tralee in a friendly in Tralee on Sunday morning. It was an open exciting match despite the strong wind. Listowel played with the wind in the first half and had a dream start. Ethan O’Connor stole the ball at an early ruck. The ball was moved quickly through Cale Sweeney, John Carmody, Kevin Lowney and Shane Healy. Joseph Murphy received the ball on their 22. He showed great pace to round the centre and power as he crashed through the final defender to score a superb try. We hoped that this would set the tone for us but Tralee took control for the next 10 minutes and only some great defensive work from Conor Ferris, Liam Quilter and Aaron Mulvihill kept them at bay. Murtie Moriarty lifted the siege when he broke from a scrum on our 5 metre line and made it to their 22 before being bundled into touch. With good field position and the wind at our backs we dominated the remainder of the half. Murtie continued his remarkable scoring record with 2 more tries before half time with Kevin Lowney converting both. The second half turned it a fierce battle as we struggled to move the ball forward into the teeth of the gale. Tralee scored under the posts and converted to put themselves back in the game. Slick handling from John Carmody and Denis Dowling created space for Shane Healy. He beat numerous defenders to set up 2 more try scoring opportunities. These were superbly executed from long range by Ethan O’Connor and Kevin Lowney to gave us comfortable lead. A late try from Tralee gave them some hope. However, powerful surges from Oisin Horgan and Kian Dowling set the platform for Murtie Moriarty to crash over for his third try to seal the victory. It was a great win and hopefully sets the performance level for the rest of the season. The outstanding performers on the day were Kevin Lowney and Murtie Moriarty. U15's Girls Listowel V Carrick On Suir Munster Cup Semi Final The TLC U15 girls traveled the long road to play away in Carrick on suir where they were met by a strong opposition of equal strength and flare. This led to another spectacular game of rugby , the type of rugby that we as coaching staff and spectator's are getting used to from our U15 girls side. Conditions were dry but windy and both teams heald their own in the first quarter. Action was intense at the break down and during set pieces, where both teams defended well. Carrick were the first to break through and scored a try, and half way through the 2nd quater scored another .This did not slow the TLC drive and attack as we pinned Carrick deep in side their 22 witch resulted in a great try by our number 9 Alex Kelly assisted by her forward pack .Second half started with much of the same with strong defending from both sides. The game was flawed by some controversial refereeing decisions which resulted in what seemed to be a solid grounding of a TLC try by our number 4 Hanna Betts disallowed as a knock on .Soon after TLC took another hard blow when we lost 2 players Marykate Reidy (14)and Clare Beasley (7)to injuries within 10 min of each other. TLC battled on again and were dealt a killer blow when Carrick scored a 3rd after another controversial decision. The game ended 15 - 5 but this was not a true reflection of a very competitive game. Girls U18's Listowel/Tralee vs. Carrick/Fethard Munster Cup Semi Final It all started very early on Saturday morning with the trip from Listowel to Carrick-on Suir. The u18 girls kicked off at 2pm playing into a strong wind in the first half. Keeping ball in hand up front, it did not take long before Ciara Shine crashed over for the first score. We were dominant in the set piece where Dearbhla Canty, Hayley Bets, Viv Ahern Ciara Shine and Sarah Jane Kelly were controlling scrums and line outs at will. Carrick did manage to cross our line but were superbly held up.Any opportunities Carrick got were quickly stifled out by some superb defense from both forwards and backs. Great emphasis was placed on discipline at the breakdown and it paid off throughout the game. Our forwards were excellent in taking control upfront, with Dearbhla making huge dents in the Carrick defense with strong runs through the middle. The forwards continuously stopped Carrick from crossing the gain line, even driving Carrick back on a number of occasions.

Our backs had a lot of front foot ball to play with, and the brilliant Aisling Brosnan made numerous breaks just ending short of the try line. It was very unfortunate that Aisling had to leave the field just before half time with an ankle injury. Carrick deserves praise for a great defensive effort in the first half and playing the conditions well, as we were continuously driven back with some monstrous kicks. The half ended with Listowel/Tralee leading 50.The second half started much similar as the first, and with the conditions favouring ourselves , it did not take long for Muirne Wall to spot a gap in the defense, and the rest as they say is history. We were 12-0 up and looked like a team in full control., but things changed dramatically shortly afterwards, when Carrick managed to score 2 breakaway tries from their own half. All of a sudden it was 12-12 and Carrick had the momentum. It was relentless attacking from Carrick bringing their big powerfull backs more into the game. We were now on the back foot scrambling in defense. The loose trio of Caolainn Healy , Kayla Donnely, Briony Kelly were excellent at stopping anyone coming around the corner with Caolainn topping the tackling count as she does most weeks (you definitely know when you are tackled by this girl). It looked as if it was only a matter of time before they would score, but our defense held out, and special praise must go to the backs ,Aoife Corcoran, Muirne Wall, Ella Kelleher, Molly Cluney, Diana O`Keeffe and Katie Ahern for tackling themselves to a standstill in the second half. There was nothing left in the tank after a long and tiring day except the script was to be re written again when against the play Muirne Wall got the ball on half way after some excellent clearing at the breakdown, only to switch direction and face 3 defenders who she left clasping at air and the rest as they say is history! The girls from Kerry are in the Final.

LISTOWEL ATHLETIC CLUB

Listowel AC had an impressive 24 athletes at the County Juvenile X-Country Relays in Cahersiveen on Sunday last in wet and windy conditions. On a very tough course of a steep hill for 450 meters, very fast downhill, muddy underfoot conditions and a wind into the face of the athletes made it real cross country conditions. There were a number of falls on bend number two by our athletes who took no notice and got back on their feet and held their positions. First up was our U9 boys, who set the scene with a well deserved second place with a strong finish by Tadgh O'Connor who's competitive spirit really shone through to take silver. In a good team performance the team consisted of John Carmondy, Joey Maher, Adam Lynch and Tadgh O'Connor. Next up the U11 girls 4 x 250m team with a strong lead from Rachel Neylon and Etain Callaghan in leg 1 and 2, gave Listowel a foundation that Aoibhinn Harte and Eabha O'Connor maintained to bring the team home in first place and the Gold medal. The U11 boys team led strongly by Ethan Tritschler along with Sean Mahony, Bobby Riordan and Leo Cuddigan ran well to take the bronze medal.

The Under 13 girls was strongly contested with our girls coming fourth and receiving bronze medals. Team of Katie Dunworth, Caoimhe Harte in her first race, Orla Mahony and Megan Lynch. In our strongest age group, we had two relay teams taking part in the U13 boys finishing in first and third positions. The team of Robert Stack, Gearoid Mulvihill, David Callaghan and Dermot Pierce took gold with strong performance from both David and Dermot to hold onto the lead coming into the final stages. Our second team of Fergal Pierce, John Godfrey, Tiernan Pierce and Louis O'Connell came home with Bronze. Our final team of the day, the Girls U15, 3 x 500m did not leave the side down, bringing home Silver. This team consisted of Ann Marie Pierce who gave Listowel a brilliant start, Cliona Pierce who had the hard task of running the hilly section and Caoimhe Barry who ran solid to bring the team home in second. North Munster Schools: Continuing on the Cross Country season, the North Munster Schools were held in Pallaskenry last Thursday in heavy underfoot conditions. Listowel AC athletes did extremely well on the day. Nathan Wright finished third in the Minor Boys 2K race. After a easy start, Nathan picked off the athletes one by one to have a sprint finish for second place but to narrowly lose out. Great running by Nathan to put himself into this position. Sasha Brent came fourth in the intermediate girls. Sasha was running out of her age group so this was a solid run to finish just outside the medals. Seamus Leahy ran a solid sixth in the 4.5K Intermediate Boys. Again, Seamus was running outside his age group and keeps getting stronger in every outing. All three athletes have qualified to go forward to the Munster Schools on Feb 11th in CIT Cork. A top fifteen finish will result in qualification to the All Irelands in March. Best of luck to the following Listowel AC athletes representing Kerry in the inter county relays next Sunday in Cork. John Carmondy, Jessie and Serna O''Sullivan, Emma and Rachel Nelyon, Robert Stack and Cliona Pierce.

Up coming Fixtures: Nenagh Olympic A.C. Open Indoor Competition for U/9 to U/12 athletes on Saturday 6th February in Nenagh Indoor Stadium Munster Cross County Schools Finals in CIT Cork on Thursday 11th February Munster Juvenile U/9 to U/12 Indoor Championships on Saturday 13th & Sunday 14th February. 2016 gets off to a good start as Beale contest two finals in the next few weeks, with our Minors through to the final of The Jotty Holly North Kerry Minor Championship (2015), Division 2, while our Juniors contest the final of the 2015 North Kerry Championship. Under the watchful eye of trainer, Ian Blake, Beale Juniors play Ballylongford in the final of the North Kerry Championship on Sunday. Throw in at one o'clock. Venue to be confirmed.

Beale Minors secured the final spot after defeating Knock/Brosna in the semifinal in Ballybunion on Sunday. Adverse weather conditions, with a strong cross-field breeze, did not allow for quality football and both teams must be complimented for a good game. Goals were the order of the day as the net was rattled five times and our opponents had a good many other chances to

40

hit the target. We went into the interval two points to the good after a competitive first half. On the changeover, we seemed to have things all our own way and had a 6-point advantage going into the closing five minutes of normal time when Knock/Brosna were awarded a penalty, which proved to be the spurt they needed, as they converted the penalty and in the next minute, raised the green flag again to level the score. In a nail-biting finish, we desperately sought out the winning point, which came as the clock ticked away. The final score read: Beale 2-9, Knock/Brosna 3-5. We meet Ballylongford/Asdee in a local derby in the final. Date and venue to be confirmed. Beale Seniors kick off Division 3 of the County League, when we travel to Blennerville on the weekend of March 20th to play St Patrick’s, in a repeat of our last game of 2015. In round 2, we host Keel on Easter weekend, while we travel to Ardfert on the weekend of April 10th. These three teams ended up just a point ahead of Beale in last year’s league table. Currow, Tarbert and Gneeveguilla contest Division 3, following relegation at the end of the last year, while Ballydonoghue, Dromid Pearses and St Senans have won promotion from Division 4. Annauscal and Brosna also contest Division 3. Patie O’Mahony remains at the helm of the senior squad as trainer, ably assisted by selectors, James Buckley, Dermott Cummins and Maurice O’Connor. Beale Seniors contest the County Junior Club Championship against Churchill. In a restructure of the County Club Championship, the Junior Championship replaces what was the Novice Championship, with the Junior Premier Championship replacing what was the Junior Championship. Teams contest the Junior Qualifier in the preliminary round. The 16 winning teams will go on to contest the Junior Premier Championship, with the other 16 contesting the Junior Championship.

As we near completion on the research of the history of Beale GAA, we would welcome any photographs anyone may have. While we have received numerous, other photographs may still be out there. We would be delighted to hear from you. We are also hoping to locate old team jerseys from St Patrick’s and Beale clubs. If anyone has one please let us know as we wish to take some photographs. You may contact Jimmy Buckley, Liam Browne, Catherine Ellis, Bríd Griffin, Paudie Mulvihill, John Hennessy or Tom Allen. Looking forward to hearing from you. Registration for Beale Ladies Gaelic Football takes place this weekend. Come along to the Community Centre on Friday evening, 7.30-9.00 or on Saturday in the Sportsfield between 1.00 and 2.00pm.

LATE GOAL GRABS MUNSTE R GLORY F OR ST. MIC H AEL’ S St. Michaels 1-08 -v- 1-05 Middleton…St. Michael’s College, Listowel had a thrilling victory over Midleton CBS in the Munster Colleges B Final in Meelin on Sunday. In a low scoring first half St. Michael’s had a strong wind at their backs but it proved more of a hindrance than a help, making accurate kicking very difficult. The Listowel side found it hard to build any momentum against a strong Midleton defence. The sides were level, 0-2 each after 25 minutes. Then Midleton struck for the game’s first goal. St. Michael’s replied with a pointed free from Sam Tarrant to leave the score at halftime; Midleton 1-02 – St. Michael’s 0-3. Whatever transpired in the St. Michael’s dressing room at half-time saw them begin the second half with great fire and determination. Their forwards, ably assisted by Cathal Keane and Bryan Sweeney at midfield, began to show glimpses of their true form and their backs fought tigerishly for every ball. The teams traded scores but Midleton still held a narrow advantage, 1-05 to 0-7, with ten minutes left. Renewed pressure and good combination play led to the equaliser for St. Michael’s scored by Conor Kennelly. The game was now in the melting pot with play flowing from end to end. Midleton CBS had the more clear cut scoring opportunities but a combination of dogged defending, a brilliant save by goalkeeper Darragh Kennelly and poor finishing by the Cork side’s forwards kept St. Michael’s in the game. Then, with time running out, St. Michael’s struck for the winning goal. A high kick by Conor Kennelly appeared to be going over the bar but dropped down underneath the crossbar and finished up in the back of the net. The final whistle sounded leading to scenes of great joy and euphoria as young and old celebrated a day to be remembered. The Denis Nunan Cup was presented by John Walsh, Munster Colleges official, to the winning captain Bryan Sweeney. Overall this was a team victory with every player including the substitutes, Jack Wall and Padraig Dillon playing their part.

Darragh Kennelly’s point blank save was crucial when the game could have gone either way. In the St. Michael’s backline, Darragh Behan aided by Daniel Sheehan and Danny Power, repelled several Midleton attacks while the half back line of David Behan, Niall Collins and Eddie Brown ensured a plentiful supply to their forwards. Cathal Keane and Bryan Sweeney led by example at midfield, while up front Aidan Quinn, Darren Loughnane and Jack Behan worked tirelessly. The full forward line of Conor Kennelly, Cathal Kennelly who must have covered every blade of grass on the pitch and Sam Tarrant made a massive contribution with vital scores. In doing so they continued the great tradition of Gaelic football in the College with this fantastic Munster Final victory. St. Michael’s now advance to the All Ireland Semi-Final on 16th March when they will meet the Leinster champions. Scorers for St. Michael’s: Conor Kennelly (1-2), Cathal Kennelly (0-3), S Tarrant (0-2), E Browne (0-1) Team: D Kennelly; D Sheehan, Darragh Behan, D Power, David Behan, Niall Collins, E Browne, B Sweeney, C Keane, A Quinn, D Loughnane, J Behan, Conor Kennelly, Cathal Kennelly, S Tarrant.
