NORTH KERRY TOURISM A STRATEGIC VIEWPOINT
Does North Kerry have the potential to become a top class tourism destination? The economic benefit of tourism goes far beyond hotels, pubs and B&Bs, the tourism industry in Ireland directly employs over 200,000 and its spin off benefits many thousands more.
LIXNAW COMMUNITY FIRST RESPONDERS
We need to challenge the perception that North Kerry is not as important as other parts of Kerry, be it for tourism or infrastructure. This impression needs to be changed - with your help. Like any business, in strategically examining North Kerry's tourism potential we need to examine our Resources and what we are expert in; what are North Kerry's tourism products; what are our attractions, what can be marketed in a strategic way. North Kerry has World class tourism assets, several, • Festivals - for example, Writers Week, Listowel races • Ballybunion Golf • Beaches • Tradition of Music & Dance, including current World and All Ireland champions, "The Listowel Fleadh". • A rich literary and cultural heritage We also have hidden and sometimes undervalued unique historical/heritage attractions of which there are many but their tourism potential is not fully realised. This was referred to by Dr. Bryan McMahon in the preface to his travel guide to Ireland written in the 1960's - this, unfortunately, is still applicable 50 years later. Examples are, Rattoo Tower, Ardfert Cathedral, Abbeydorney, Carrigafoyle Castle, Tarbert Bridewell, Listowel Castle, Lartigue, many more, plus famous historical people, not to mention our unique cluster of writers and writers museum and many walking routes. Each of these historic assets is unique in their own right but each is standing alone - if all were combined in a tour this would bring synergy and create a completely new product, that stands out, exceptional, special.
Can a tourism product "uniquely North Kerry" be crafted around all of these individual assets, marketed together as "The North Kerry Heritage Experience", creating the North Kerry Heritage Region. To put this in perspective, Heritage Tourism accounts for approx €2bn of Ireland's €7bn annual tourism income. • Products - are we aware of our tourism assets. Is there an attraction in our products being natural, un-commercialised. • Environmental scanning - are there threats to North Kerry's tourism potential? • Vision - do we have a clear vision for the future of North Kerry? • Market - can we break into the International market - we are already well known Internationally in certain circles.
Lixnaw is set to benefit from a new Community Responder scheme to assist the National Ambulance Service in life threatening emergencies. The scheme will be made up entirely of volunteers living or working within the coverage area and on a roster system. Reliant on public support and business sponsorship, it’s estimated that the scheme will require €8,000 in order to “go live”. The scheme will be linked to, and under the control of the National Ambulance Service. Emergency calls for it will be sent by ambulance control to the pagers of the responders on call. The Responders will attend calls for choking, stroke, chest pain and cardiac arrest within the 6km radius which is centred from the Garda station in Lixnaw village A Facebook page “Lixnaw Community Responders” is now online as well as a Twitter page @LixnawResponders. A public meeting was was held a few weeks ago for those persons interested in getting involved. There was a great response and 21 people signed up on the night. There is another opportunity on Sunday the 14th for people to join at our coffee morning where there is a beautiful valentines hamper up for grabs. The coffee morning will take place after Sunday morning mass in the convent hall on Sunday February 14th at approx 11.30am Email enquires to lixnawresponders@gmail.com
What is North Kerry's tourism potential? The opportunity of Tourism employment is on our doorstep.
You can help bring about the necessary culture change - please ask each General Election Candidate what is their plan to develop and perhaps more importantly, what is their plan to protect North Kerry as a tourism region. North Kerry Tourism Forum.

FIANNA FÁIL WILL INCREASE THE STATE PENSION BY €30 – BRASSIL
Fianna Fail Kerry general election candidate John Brassil has said that in Government Fianna Fail will raise the State Pension, both the Contributory & Non-Contributory, by €30 over the lifetime of the Government.
Commenting on the issue Cllr. Brassil said: “Older people deserve a decent income in retirement and a decent standard of living. Fianna Fail will deliver for older people and will increase the State Pension by €30. Furthermore, we will raise the Living Alone Allowance to €15. We will also abolish the waste that is Irish water, scrap water charges and abolish prescription charges which are a huge burden for older people.
PANCAKE MORNING FOR MENTAL HEALTH
A Transition year group in St. Joseph's Secondary School, Ballybunion, under the guidance of Mrs. Kelly and with the assistance of Miss O'Donovan held a pancake morning for 'Mental Health' on Thursday morning February 4th 2016. They served up pancakes to the staff and students of the school with some delicious toppings. Thanks to all those who contributed to the worthy cause. Best of luck to all the transition years heading out on work experience this coming week.
“Despite their claims to have protected older people, the actions of Fine Gael and Labour tell a very different story. There has been a raft of harsh and regressive cuts and measures that have directly affected the incomes of older people in Kerry. Older people have seen a fivefold increase in prescription fees, changes to the eligibility criteria for medical cards, the axing of the telephone allowance, reductions in the vital Household Benefits Package, the abolition of the Bereavement Grant and the introduction of water charges.
“It is a myth pedalled by the Government that older people have been protected. Older people across Kerry know that that is simply not true. No amount of spin can take away from the fact that under Fine Gael and Labour the rate of deprivation for those aged 65 and over has increased from 9.5% in 2009 to 14.3% in 2014. In Government Fianna Fail will put an end to Fine Gael’s and Labour’s agenda to target those who have the least to give. Fianna Fail will deliver for older people in Kerry. We will create a fairer society and we will ensure that under our watch older people are given the resources that they need to live full and independent lives. It’s time we established a threshold of decency in our society.”

FUN AUCTION AT COVE YOUTH CAFE LAST SUNDAY
Many thanks to everyone who bought lines for the Valentines Day hamper to support the Cove Youth Café, Ballybunion. We were hoping to make the price of a new laptop. - almost did! Thank you to the members, Orla and Hannah who helped set up for the auction and to Andrew, Ruth and Grace for hanging around to pull out the winners of the draw. Thanks also to Marie for the photos and to Tom for missing the match to come and do the auction and of course everyone who turned up. The lucky winners of the draw were Ms Alice O'Riordan who won the hamper and Mr William Bunyan who won the foot spa!!
We are delighted that a couple of individuals have taken up the invitation to become Friends of the Café by sponsoring a part or all of one months rent. This can be done by contacting any of the committee or by calling in to Bank of Ireland, Ballybunion and lodging to the Youth Café account. Míle buiochas, Anne Cummins (Chairperson). Photos by Marie Rohan
With the lottery process complete, ROK Charity Cycle PRO Cathal Walshe gave a breakdown of what will happen next: “The 6,000 successful applicants from the lottery have now been finalised, these individuals will receive a confirmation email on February 15th. Over the course of the next 2 days, each applicant will receive a unique code in order to complete their registration. It is then the responsibility of each individual to complete their registration before midnight on Monday February 22nd.”
Cathal reminded all applicants that failure to complete registration in this timeframe will result in the place being offered to another lottery applicant: “If any successful applicant should decide to not take up their place; this code will become null and void as of Tuesday February 23rd. This place will then be offered to another applicant.” The Ring of Kerry Charity Cycle 2016 will take place on July 2nd.
VALENTINES MIGRAINE TRIGGERS?
Traditional Valentine’s gifts such as chocolates, perfume, flowers or wine are considered common migraine triggers and can result in up to three days of nausea, vomiting, extreme sensitivity to light, noise, smells, and an intense throbbing headache. However recent data from an initial study released by Curelator Headache has shown that “Chocolate, caffeine and red wine may be just as responsible for protecting against migraine attacks as contributing to them”. ‘Trigger factors do not cause migraines but they can help to bring about an attack’ says Communications Officer with the Migraine Association of Ireland (MAI) Jane Whelan. ‘They are highly individual and can range from sleep patterns, stress and hormonal changes, to diet, smells, lighting, and weather conditions.
‘Migraine is a complex neurological disorder. In the vast majority of migraine sufferers the triggers act in combination with many other triggers. There is still a lot to be learned about the individual nature of triggers and why something might be a trigger for one person but have a protective nature for another person.’ The Migraine Association of Ireland advises that people keep a migraine diary to record their attacks and to help identify potential triggers. These are available on request. For more information please contact the migraine helpline on 1850-200-378 or visit www.migraine.ie.

1990 CHAMPIONSHIP REUNION The team of 1990 that won the championship are holding a reunion night on Saturday 5th March. The reunion will be held in the Swanky Bar and further details will be advised later. U-21 FINAL Tarbert Moyvane U21 team lost out to Knock Brosna in the final of the North Kerry U-21 championship final after extra time. The game was played in Knocknagoshel with extremely poor underfoot conditions. Playing with the wind in the first half it was Andrew Doherty who opened the scores but Brosna Knock responded with two points before an excellent well taken goal by Shane O’Connor put Tarbert Moyvane in the driving seat to lead at half time by 1-2 to 0-3. With the wind and rain getting worse it was Knock Brosna who got three points to put them in the lead. Scores were at a premium and Knock Brosna went two up entering the final five minutes. A fifty from Shane O’Connor was followed by another long range free attempt against the wind being the final kick of the game. Up cane Shane again to score a wonderful point. With the weather getting worse both teams were reluctant to play extra time and it is a credit to both sets of players the way they played so sportingly throughout the game and no players seriously injured considering the conditions. Brosna again took the lead and then the crucial score of the match game from a Knock Brosna penalty to put then up four and with the wind in the second half of extra time. Again to Tarbert Moyvane’s credit they battled well and a beautiful point by Andrew Doherty was followed by two goal chances before the final score again a free by Shane O’Connor left the final score 1-10 to 1-8. Overall Knock Brosna were deserving winners but great credit to Tarbert Moyvane players on their performance. DEATHS Once again we lost a resident of the village and Eily Mai was no ordinary resident, she was an institution, a character and very much her own woman. She lived all her life at "the corner". Her mother died when she was young and with her father, Mick Sullivan, she brought up her two brothers, Tommie O and Jim Joe. The bond between the three was close and closer until both brothers predeceased her. Life was not easy for Eily Mai, she raised a family of nine, two girls and seven boys but unfortunately two of her sons, Tom & Seamus predeceased her as did her husband Mike Joe. Sincere sympathy to Kay, Mary (US), Tim, Micheal, Martin, John & Pat (Australia) and of course, her nephew, Mike O'Sullivan who, can be said, was another son in Eily Mai's life. On the day of her funeral he did her proud, he spoke lovingly about her and told some stories that illustrated the woman she was, just a few because it would be impossible to tell even half of them. They are stories that will be told for generations to come because she was one of the great local charachters. We have lost most of these charachters and unfortunately they will never be replaced because everything has become politically correct. For good or bad that is the way life is. The death also took place recently of Dolly Hennessy, Ballyduff. Better known to many locally as Dolly Conroy she spent much of her younger life in Moyvane. Dolly is survived by her daughter, Margaret, New Jersey, sons, John & Michael, Ballyduff, sister Bridie Shine, Moyvane, three brothers in Dublin and extended family. May they both rest in peace.

THE STYLIST
Cllr. Jimmy Moloney keeping a watchful eye on votes at the local election recount of the Listowel Municipal District at the John Mitchels GAA Club Tralee on Wednesday 10th Feb
By Rosie Nixon A fast-paced, fun-packed rummage through the ultimate dressing up box, THE STYLIST is perfect for fans of Lindsey Kelk and Sophie Kinsella. When Amber Green, a shop assistant in an exclusive London boutique is plucked from obscurity and mistakenly offered a job working with Mona Armstrong, the infamous, jet-setting 'stylist to the stars', she hits the ground running, helping to style some of Hollywood's hottest (and craziest) starlets. As awards season spins into action Mona is in hot demand and Amber's life turned upside down. Suddenly she catching the attention of two very different suitors, TV producer Rob and Hollywood bad boy rising star Liam. How will Amber keep her head? And what the hell will everyone wear?
KERRY AMONG THE MOST EXPENSIVE PLACES IN IRELAND TO GET HITCHED
Kerry is the 2nd dearest county in Ireland to get married in, a new study by Wedding Social finds Wicklow is the dearest county, whilst Offaly is the cheapest
Barristers, Solicitors, candidate election agents with Kerry County Council officials scrutinizing the doubtful votes at the local election count afresh of the Listowel Municipal District at the John Mitchels GAA Club, Tralee on Wednesday 10th February
At an average of €24,805, Kerry is the 2nd dearest county in Ireland to get married in. Social network website WeddingSocial.io has carried out a comprehensive study into wedding costs in Ireland. Wicklow is the dearest county at an average of €24,870, while the cheapest county is Offaly with weddings costing an average of €20,930, the only county in Ireland coming in under €21,000. August is the most popular month to get married in with 15% of all Irish weddings, while January is the least popular on just 2%. The study from WeddingSocial.io shows that the cheapest month to get married in is February costing on average €21,765 but couples getting married in July pay nearly €3,000 more at €24,615 on average. Overall the average cost of a wedding in Ireland is €23,605, a €1,200 increase on last year. The study was conducted using over 1,000 actual wedding budgets from couple across the Republic of Ireland (26 counties). A full breakdown of costs, counties and months can be found at www.weddingsocial.io/WeddingCosts. Founder, Alan Joyce, WeddingSocial.io comments: “The wedding reception is the largest expense a couple incurs. Therefore, it’s no surprise to see Wicklow, topping the list of Ireland’s most expensive counties, with its many picturesque and exclusive wedding venues. In the battle of the sexes, on average €450 is spent kitting out the bridesmaids, over double that spent on the groomsmen. It’s also interesting to note that photo and video booths rank higher than the more traditional wedding expenses of flowers and car hire, highlighting the importance of the shift towards social media.”

LISTOWEL EMMETS LADIES
Emmets Ladies Football Club held their Fundraiser "The Cube " last Saturday night 6th of February in the Listowel Arms Hotel. It was a fantastic success and a great night of family entertainment with almost 300 people in attendance. The audience were kept on the edge of their seats throughout the night as the 26 contestants battled it out to compete for the winning prize of €500. Congratulations to the winner JoJo Grimes, sponsored by Kevin Brodericks Bar. Jo Jo displayed great skill, nerve and determination to win.
Our two Special Guests on the night were Anthony Maher and Aislinn Desmond. Although both are All Star Winners they were put through their paces competing in the Cube. While both put up a competitive battle they were no match for our own Jo Jo Grimes. At the beginning of the evening both Anthony and Aislinn made presentations to our Under 16 All Ireland Champions, Leah Henry, Sophie Lynch, Rachel Mulvihill and their Kerry U16 Manager Graham Shine in recognition of their immense achievement in 2015. Gemma Hannon, one of the founding members of the Emmets Ladies Football club was also presented with an award in recognition of her hard work, dedication and commitment over the past 14 years. We would like to thank all the contestants for being so sporting and taking part in the event. A huge thank you also to the businesses of Listowel who either sponsored a contestant or placed an ad in the program. Thanks also to those who provided spot prizes for the raffle, proceeds of which were donated to our own Tidy Towns Committee. We would also like to acknowledge and express or sincere gratitude to the Management and Staff of the Listowel Arms Hotel for hosting the event. To our own local notoriety Billy Keane for doing an amazing job as MC on the night, keeping the crowd entertained and the contestants on their toes. Thanks to Jim Hannon for lighting and sound, Listowel Community Centre for providing the stage, Kevin Dunlea for providing the Cube Flooring, Ann McNamee for photography and Listowel Tidy Towns for the use of their window to display all our contestant photos. To our main sponsor of Emmets Ladies Club, Charlie & all at Fitzgeralds Centra, thanks so much for selling tickets for the event the past few weeks. Your continued support is much appreciated by all in the Club. Finally, thanks to our hard working Event Committee, Bridget Tydings, Simon O'Flynn, Mary Beades, David O' Brien, Stephanie Sheehy, Orla Keane and Siobhan Barrett. Well done on providing us with a well run and well organised entertaining event.
Monies raised from The Cube will be used to upskill our coaches and continue to provide the best possible environment for our players to grow and develop as players and individuals. Beale Juniors were crowned 2015 North Kerry Champions on Sunday, defeating Ballylongford in the final in rain sodden Ballylongford. We were first off the mark on the scoreboard and had a 4-point advantage before Bally found the target. We were on top for much of the first half; however, missed chances in the last five minutes sent us into the interval just four points ahead, 0-8 to 0-4. The rain bucketed down in the second half and both teams have to be credited with a good standard of play in such conditions. A goal in the tenth minute proved the crucial score, giving us a seven-point lead but our opponents started pegging back the scores in the last quarter to leave just four points between the sides at the final whistle, 1-12, 0-11. Beale Minors meet Ballylongford/Asdee in a local derby in the final of the 2015 Jotty Holly Minor Championship on Saturday at 1 o’clock. Venue to be confirmed. Goals were the order of the day, with the green flag raised no fewer than eleven times, when these two teams last met in the North Kerry League in April. This is our second final contesting in the 2015 season, losing out the County League to St Patrick’s Blennerville in a replay.
The County Minor Football League, Division 5 (13-a-side) kicks off on Saturday, February 20th, with games also pencilled in for March 5th, 12th and 25th. Other teams in this division include Tarbert/Moyvane, Asdee/Ballylongford, John Mitchells, Keel/Listry. Maurice Mannix continues as trainer of the minors for 2016.
Back safely from a fantastic Gran Canaria holiday, Beale Seniors are in training in preparation fro the North Kerry League, County League and Junior Championship. In the North Kerry League, Division 1A, Beale play St Senans in the opening round in Ballybunion on Sunday at 2.00pm. Other teams in this division are Moyvane, Brosna and Tarbert.
Beale Seniors kick off Division 3 of the County League, when we travel to Blennerville on the weekend of March 20th to play St Patrick’s in a repeat of our last game of 2015. In round 2, we host Keel on the Easter weekend, and then we travel to Ardfert on the weekend of April 10th. These three teams ended up just a point ahead of Beale in last year’s league table. Currow, Tarbert, Gneeveguilla contest Division 3, following relegation at the end of the last year, while Ballydonoghue Dromid Pearses and St Senans have won promotion from Division 4. Annascaul and Brosna also contest Division 3. Patie O’Mahony remains at the helm of the senior squad as trainer, ably assisted by selectors, James Buckley, Dermott Cummins and Maurice O’Connor. Beale Seniors contest the County Junior Club Championship against Churchill. The Junior Championship replaces what was the Novice Championship.
We are hoping to locate old team jerseys from St Patrick’s and Beale clubs. If anyone has one please let us know as we wish to take some photographs. You may contact Jimmy Buckley, Liam Browne, Catherine Ellis, Bríd Griffin, Paudie Mulvihill, John Hennessy or Tom Allen. Looking forward to hearing from you.

Mobile: 086 3689061 | Email: osullivan_mairead@yahoo.com BRENDAN BOYLE JUNIOR CUP Sponsored by Moloney Financial Services Listowel 2015 Final - Ballylongford 0.11 v Beale 1.12 This was a game of two halves the Bally men couldn't find their shooting boots in the first half and Beale capitalized with Ian Blake experience in holding the ball and some fine points from play and placed balls and Darragh Buckley youth and speed causing all sorts of problems for the Ballylongford backs it left the half time score standing at Beale 0.08pts v Ballylongfords 0.04. But it was the second half that seen things hot up with Ballylongford upping their game and matching Beale score for score, but the experience of Beale Ian Blake controlling the ball in the middle sector of the field , meant that Ballylongford down 4pts points entering into the second half, just couldn't get over the deficit. Beale were well deserved winners and well done to both teams playing under difficult weather conditions. Beale Captain Rory Mulvihill accepted the Brendan Boyle cup on behalf of his team.
Well done to all our Listowel Juvenile members who competed last Saturday in the Kerry Singles Championship in Killarney. Congratulation to Valerie Guiney, winner of the u.15 girls. NORTH KERRY U21 CHAMPIONSHIP 2015 Sponsored by Dennehy Veterinary Clinic Duagh Final: Moyvane/Tarbert 1.08 v Knocknagoshel/Brosna 1.10 after extra time Knocknagoshel/Brosna faced last year’s runners up in the competition Moyvane/Tarbert at a wet and windy Willie Walsh Park Knocknagoshel on Sunday last hoping to pull off a fourth title in six years. With heavy underfoot conditions scores from play were at a premium throughout. Moyvane/Tarbert opened the scoring with 5th minute free from Aidan Doherty. The home side dominated the play in the next 15 minutes with Adam Barry kicking two frees. However they were guilty of a number of missed opportunities in this period and Moyvane/Tarbert capitalised when Shane O’Connor struck for a goal in the 20th minute. This was closely followed by a pointed free from the boot of Timmy Noonan. Adam Barry pointed beautifully from 45 yards to leave the half time score at 1-2 to 03 in favour of Moyvane/Tarbert. Knock/Brosna upped the tempo at the start of the second half and reeled off three points in the second, third and sixth minute to put their noses in front. The first came from play through Kieran O’Donnell and was quickly followed by two Adam Barry frees. P.J. Stack levelled matters 12 minutes into the half with a pointed free and Moyvane/Tarbert went in front again when Gerald O’Sullivan converted a free two minutes later. Knock/Brosna drove forward again and were rewarded with points from play from Timmy Finnegan, Ger Nash and Adam Barry to put them two points up with the clock ticking down. The visitors responded in great style and threw everything at Knock/Brosna resulting in the home side conceding frees. Two excellent frees from the boot of Shane O’Connor proved enough to send the game to extra time with the full time score standing at 1-6 to 0-9. It was Knock/Brosna who rose to the challenge best in extra time with a point from play by Adam Barry and a converted penalty in the first half the crucial scores. As the rain descended in the 2nd half of extra time Moyvane/Tarbert tried hard to close the gap. A pointed free from Shane O’Connor followed by a point from play by Aidan Doherty gave them encouragement but the Knock/Brosna rearguard stood strong against late attacks to see them victorious on a final score of Knock/Brosna 1-10 Moyvane/Tarbert 1-8. Adam Barry, who starred throughout and contributed with a total of 1-7, accepted the cup from Chairman Billy Enright amid rousing cheers from the home support.
