BALLYDUFF FARMER ACHIEVES A NATIONAL FIRST WITH INSTALLATION OF DELAVAL ‘HERD NAVIGATOR’
‘Having a full laboratory on the farm is a total game-changer’
A Ballyduff farmer has become the first in the Republic of Ireland to install a new farm management system which could revolutionise the face of dairy farming. The O’Hanlon family have lived and worked on Golden Hill Farm since 1876 and currently keep a dairy herd of 130 animals with plans for further expansion. According to 40 year old Johnny O’Hanlon who runs the farm along with his parents, Gerard and Ann, the recently installed DeLaval ‘Herd Navigator’ system is going to generate a new stream of valuable information regarding animal health and productivity which will be invaluable to his business. “If milk prices drop, you have to do what you’re doing more profitably. By being able to identify potential problems before they actually manifest themselves, we can reduce spend on antibiotics, keep our milk output constant and of the highest quality. It allows us to gather information through milk samples which we would never have been able to do before. Quite simply, there is no piece of farm equipment like ‘Herd Navigator,” said Mr O’Hanlon. ‘Herd Navigator’ is designed to provide producers with an enhanced overview of their entire herd whilst offering specific valuable information on individual cows. It will allow milk producers to identify significantly more cows in heat than can be seen with current heat detection aids - such as activity meters - or visual checks to spot mastitis before it affects the milk. Milk producers will also be made aware of cows affected by different metabolic disorders, such as clinical and-sub-clinical ketosis before actual symptoms are visible to the naked eye. “Herd Navigator is a significant innovation in herd management as the system automatically measures different components in the milk while the cow is being milked. This is undoubtedly the management tool of the future, it takes so much pressure off the farmer and delivers accurate results which will increase the financial yield from each cow by around €267 per cow per year,” said Kieran FitzGerald, VMS Solutions Manager, GB and Ireland. Early warnings alert the milk producer to the appropriate quick action needed for individual cows, for reproduction, udder health and nutrition. Proactive action will also improve animal welfare and food safety. Herd Navigator focus areas include reproduction, udder health and feeding. Using sophisticated bio-modelling, analytical results are presented on the farmer’s computer in a clear form that makes it easy to spot animals which need special attention including: • Cows in heat, pregnant cows and cows with reproduction disorders or abortions • Cows that are developing mastitis, days before clinical signs can be seen • Early detection of ketosis cases or imbalance in feed ration

The Kerry rematch could be Underwood’s last outing in the amateur ranks as she has indicated that she is about to switch codes.
Eleven other bouts, featuring some of Ireland’s and Munster’s top young prospects, were decided in the Kingdom. Donal Rice and Ryan Downey from the Cashen Vale club were both successful in their bouts.
DAFFODIL DAY 2016 IN LISTOWEL IS FRIDAY 11TH MARCH
The new system will give the milk producer a better overview of the whole herd while providing valuable information on individual cows. Herd Navigator is a multi-award winner including Agrarfuchs Innovation in Agriculture Award at Agraria Austria 2010, nel d’Or for milking equipment at La France Agricole 2010 and rated as three star Europe news at Agromek 2008 in January in Messecenter Herning. The Herd Navigator concept has been developed in close co-operation between FOSS and DeLaval International AB and DeLaval UK and Ireland will be working in co-operation with Evidence Based Veterinary Consultancy (EBVC). In July 2015, DeLaval was awarded the RABDF Prince Philip Award for research and development in the field of dairy farming and the most practical, relevant and best technical exhibit at the Livestock Event 2015 for the ‘Herd Navigator™’. Pictured to announce the upcoming Daffodil Day to be held in Listowel on Friday 11th March are Sheamus O'Connor, Mary O'Connor, Mary Keogh, Eileen Fennell, Kay Hanley, Mary Caplice. Daffodil Day 2016 will take place on Friday March 11th. Here in Listowel our local branch of the ICS will be out in force selling Daffodils/pins etc We are asking as usual for public support. COURAGE BOYS, WE ARE WINNING By Michael B. Barry
An Illustrated History of the 1916 Rising A small revolution in a small country: the Rising that took place in Dublin during Easter 1916 was indeed small. However, its strength lay in its dramatic symbolism; after centuries of failed revolution, this defining event allowed the Irish people to see what was possible – that the strong British grasp established over Ireland could be ended. As well as laying the foundation stone of the edifice that would become the Irish State, it reverberated across the world, inspiring colonial peoples in their own struggles for independence. If you want to understand the story of 1916, from its origins, the events of the week itself and its aftermath, this is the book. Michael Barry shows both the panoramic and the particular and tells a complex story in a clear but nuanced manner. The events of the Rising are brought alive and explained in a readable and accessible style, illustrated with over 500 engrossing photographs and images.

North Kerry Novice Championship –Final Emmets C 1-7 Knockanure 1-5
Listowel Emmets C team were crowned Novice Champions for the fourth year in a row on Saturday night last in a 1-7 to 1-5 victory over a spirited Knockanure side. Due to pitch availability this game was held in Frank Sheehy Park where a big crowd braved the elements. It was the visitors who started brightly and opened the scoring on 5 minutes after some nice football by the half forward line. Knockanure made it 2 points to no score from a free after 10 minutes but perhaps should have been further in front as Emmets found it tough to get a grip on the game. A Derek Dillon free got Emmets on the score board before some excellent football saw the home side rattle off 1-2 over the next 10 minutes, the goal finished smartly by Tom Walsh. Just on the stroke of half-time Knockanure dispatched a penalty to leave the score at 1-3 to 1-2 at the break in favour of Listowel. Two scores from captain Kieran O'Sullivan gave Emmets a 3 point lead 6 minutes into the second half before an excellent individual point from Derek Dillon gave them a 4 point cushion. With 15 minutes left on the clock the Knockanure revival began and they really took the game to Emmets pointing two close range frees after some hard work from their forwards. They attacked from all areas of the pitch but the Emmets defence stood firm with Cathal Keane doing particularly well. With just 4 minutes left on the clock the boys in blue pointed to leave them trailing by just one score and the game was on a knife edge. Listowel won the next breaking ball after some good work from the experienced Colman O'Flaherty at midfield and Sean Gilbert who had a fine second half pointed a free to close out the game for Listowel. Both teams tried their hearts out in really difficult conditions and provided a really entertaining game. Commiserations to a fine Knockanure side who no doubt will be back in another final before too long. Congratulations to the Emmets management team of John James Buckley, Keith Hughes and Pat Barry and to all team members who put in a lot of effort over the past few weeks. After a long illness, bravely borne, Mary Mason McMahon was called to her eternal reward. Tom McMahon played juvenile and senior football with St Patrick’s, Ballybunion. When St Patrick’s and Beale amalgamated in the early seventies, Tom wore the green and red of Beale and was a key player when we won the three-in-a-row North Kerry Championships at the end of the seventies. May her soul rest in peace. For all Beale GAA club updates, follow us on Facebook: Beale GAA Club.

It looked like game set and match, but into injury time and an awarded penalty was converted by Knockanure Steven O Carroll to leave the half time score Emmet C 1.03 v Knockanure 1.02 The second half was a low scoring affair with Knockanure trying hard to close the gap but with Emmets a point up and out scoring 3pts to 2pts in the second half Emmets were crowned Novice Cup Winners for the fourth year in a row to finish last years competitions, with this final being a repeat of last year but this time round even though on the losing side Knockanure have closed the gap the next outing for these two sides will be in March in the Mccarthy Insurance Junior Leagues. The Ballybunion U10 Indoor Community Games Soccer team competed in the opening round of the competition in Duagh Sports Hall on Sunday 21st February. The team played four matches in a very tough group. They played with great skill and teamwork and a lot of credit is due to the players who never gave up and kept going in all their matches. Their first match was against Moyvane who they beat 4 -1. The signs were very positive as they took their goals very well. Up next were St Brendan's Oakpark and again Ballybunion started at a high tempo and got the early goals to be 4-1 up at half-time. They eventually won it 7-1. The next game was really tough. Ballybunion went two goals behind to Duagh early into the first half. However, just before half time Ballybunion pulled one back. Ballybunion had to dig deep to score two goals in the second half and win the game 3-2. Their last game was against Ballymacelligott. Again they proved to be very tough opposition. They scored two early goals and Ballybunion found themselves behind by two. Despite the tiredness Ballybunion pushed themselves on and scored one goal before half-time. Ballybunion took over in the second half and scored an early equaliser. They really applied the pressure and scored another three goals to eventually win 5-3. They have now qualified for the next round which will take place in Milltown on Sunday 28th February where they will be up against Brosna, Beaufort and An Gaeltacht. Well done to everyone. Thanks to all the parents who attended and supported the team
Division 1B Round 1: Desmonds 4.08 v Listowel Emmets 1.07 Report by Gerard Murphy Castleisland Desmond’s GAA Club PRO. Conditions were very bad with Wind & Rain all through the match Listowel played with a strong breeze to their backs but Desmond’s were the better team where great work by club Captain Maurice Hickey & Stephen Bartlett plus tight marking by the Desmond’s backs, and with 3 goals scored by forward Eoin Murphy saw the home side go in at HT leading by 4 – 03 to Listowel’s 04pts. Listowel started the 2nd half scoring 1- 01 to make a Spirited fight back. But with great Points by Stephen Bartlett & Maurice Hickey Saw the Desmond’s run out winners by 4 -08 to 1-07. Referee Seamus Mulvihill had a good game with the game been played in a good spirit in such bad weather conditions. Division 1B Round 1: Ballydonoghue 1.14 v Finuge 0.06 Report by Tim O Connor Ballydonoghue GAA P.R.O. Ballydonoghue had an impressive win over Finuge in wind swept Dowling Park Coolard in the first round of the North Kerry League. Playing with the aid of a strong wind they led at half time by seven points thanks, in the main to the free taking skills of Paul Kennelly. Ballydonoghue 0-8. Finuge 0-1. Having the wind at their backs in the second half Finuge were expected to take the game to Ballydonoghue, but it was the home side that struck first with a well taken point by Darragh Sheehy. Finuge were winning a lot of possession but were finding it difficult to break down the Ballydonoghue defence. When they did register a score Ballydonoghue were quick to reply at the other end, scoring six points to Finuge's five points in the second half. The game was already gone from Finuge when Jim Cermin struck for the only goal of the match inside the final 10mins. UNFAILING NOVENA TO TO ST. ANTHONY
"Blessed be God in His Angels and in His Saints" O Holy St. Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and Charity for His creatures, made you worthy, when on earth, to possess miraculous powers. Miracles waited on your word, which you were ever ready to speak for those in trouble and anxiety. Encouraged by this thought, I implore you to obtain for me (request). The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so, you are the Saint of Miracles. O gentle and loving St. Anthony, whose heart was ever full of human sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the sweet Infant Jesus, who loved to be folded in your arms; and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours. Amen. T.O.C
