dentist dr Hannah flynn to Be recognised at the inaugural irish Women's awards 2019 After the enormous success of the English and Scottish Women’s Awards that took place in 2018, the first ever Irish Women’s Awards 2019 will take place later this month in Dublin. It aims to acknowledge and celebrate the success of women entrepreneurs, business women, professionals, civil servants, women in uniform, charity workers and many more that contribute in making Ireland a greater place to live in. Dentist Dr Hannah Flynn, of Flynns Dental Care in Tralee, is one of only ten finalists to be selected for an award in the category of Best Professional in Business. Hannah was delighted to learn of her nomination and said it was a lovely surprise. She is the only person in Kerry nominated for the award.

Kerry TD and Minister of State at the Department of Transport, Tourism and Sport, Brendan Griffin, has tthis week confirmed to Fine Gael County Councillor for Listowel Municipal District, Councillor Mikey Kennelly, that €1.65 million is to be made available to Kerry County Council (KCC) by Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) for the resurfacing of 4 kilometres of the N69 Listowel to Tralee Road at Mountcoal. This money is in addition to the €19 million announced before Christmas by Minister Griffin for national roads in Kerry in 2019. Minister Griffin and Councillor Kennelly are welcoming the funding as very positive news for North Kerry. They said that the stretch of road in question is one of the worst stretches of national road in Kerry and is the main artery linking North Kerry with Tralee and the rest of the county. They said that they will be following up with Kerry County Council to help ensure that works will progress as soon as possible. The tender documents for the scheme are nearing completion and Kerry County Council is targeting to go to tender in February. Further information from Brendan on 085 889 2939 or Mikey on 086 807 7359

Hannah is a devoted businesswoman and her dental practice has gone from strength to strength over the past 13 years. Flynns Dental Care is now open on Saturdays and continues to provide appointments three evenings a week until 8pm, which has proved to be very popular with their patients. Hannah and her team at Flynns Dental Care are no stranger to winning awards. In 2012 Hannah won the Sensodyne Dentist of the Year in Munster for diagnosing a patient with oral cancer, and ultimately saving his life. In the same year at the 2012 Irish Dentistry Awards she won 5 awards, including Dental Practice of the Year in Southern Ireland and Best Employer. Hannah also went on in 2014 to win Best Dental Practice in Munster. The black-tie event will be held at the Crowne Plaza Dublin Blanchardstown Hotel, on Monday 21st of January, and we wish Hannah and everyone at Flynns Dental Care a very successful evening!

tarbert TARBERT NOTES: To include items - email notestarbert@hotmail.com or phone Patrick Lynch at 068 36117 DEATHS Many of the older generation were sad to hear of the passing of Mary Culhane, formerly of Doonard Lower, Tarbert. Mary, aged 73 years, died on Sunday 30th December 2018 at St. Mary's Hospital, Phoenix Park, Dublin. She was daughter of the late Jackie Culhane and his wife Rose, nee McGovern. The late Jackie Culhane, N.T. a native of Glin taught at Tarmons and Tarbert Boys' National Schools from the Thirties up until his death in 1957. His family all grew up in Tarbert and following the death of their father they moved with their mother Rose to Drumlish, Co. Longford. Following her funeral Mass on Thursday 3rd January at Corpus Christi Church, Drumcondra cremation took place in Glasnevin. Sympathy of the community is extended to her sisters Helen, Ita, Pauline and brothers J.J. and Connie. She was predeceased by her sister Rosemary. Sympathy of the community is also extended to the parents, fiancee, relatives and friends of the late Jeremiah Holly, Rusheen, Ballylongford who died tragically in a motorcycle accident on the road between Tarbert and Glin on Sun 30th Dec 2018. Sympathy is further extended to the family of the late Larry McCaffrey, Co. Fermanagh who worked in the parish in the late 1970's and was well known in GAA circles. His funeral took place in Co. Fermanagh on Monday 31st December 2018. Beannacht Dé le h-anamacha na Marbh. WEDDING BELLS The wedding took place on Saturday 29th December at Fossa Church, Killarney of Leonard Gildea, eldest son of Brendan and Phil Gildea, Tieraclea Park, Tarbert and Jeanette Harrington, daughter of Bernie Harrington/ Hanrahan and John Hanrahan, Ballygoughlin, Glin. Best man was Enda Gildea and groomsmen were Gary and Brendan Gildea. Bridesmaids were Aisling Enright, Catriona O'Mahony and Ita Walsh. Men of honour were Jonathan Harrington and Eoin Hanrahan. Pageboys were Aaron and Sean Harrington and John Hanrahan. The reception was held in the Dromhall Hotel, Killarney and the happy couple will work and live in Dublin. Guimís gach rath ar an mbeirt a phós agus go maire síad i bfad le chéile. FÁILTE D'ON BHLIAN NUA The beating of the bodhrans, the marching music of the accordeons, the procession of flaming torches signalled that the old tradition of 'beating out the old year and ringing in the New Year' is very much alive and well in Tarbert. On a very mild New Year's Eve as the countdown to midnight started in the Square, best wishes for the coming year of 2019 were exchanged in the assembled gathering of Tarbertians, young and old. It was nice to see Noreen Carrig, Tarbert and Mary Coolahan, Dublin and their families present to remember contributions made in previous years by their late husbands Finbar Carrig and Johnny Coolahan. A video presentation by TDA highlighted events of the past year. BUSINESS CLOSURE It was disappointing to see a second business closure in Main Street and in Tarbert with the closure of Lal Browne's Bookmaker's shop. Lal Browne, Athea, rented the premises from Michael Lanigan in 1972 and traded there as a Turf Accountant for the next 46 years up until its closure on Monday 31st Dec 2018. Spillane with twenty years service were the front of house men who ran the shop and kept the punters happy (not always!). Lal Browne's famous slogan was 'Betting like kissing is no sin, bet with Browne and you'r sure to win!, but unfortunately for many the second part of the prophecy was not always fulfilled but sin scéal eile! We wish Brownes, Athea and John and Stephen health and happiness in the coming years. ASDEE LIVE CRIB Well done to everybody concerned with the Asdee Live Crib. It was nice to see that in this gadget age of the playstation and fascination with tech games there is still a sense of awe and wonder in a child's eyes with the sight of laying hens, a donkey, a calf and a sheep with a homeless baby infant in a stable. Real meaning of Christmas for all to see! COMHALTAS Fógra from Helen Flaherty: Ballylongford/ Tarbert CCE will host an Appreciation Night for the outgoing committee members in Kennelly's Bar, Ballylongford on Friday next, 11th January at 9.30 pm. Outgoing Chairman, Mike Carrig gave a run down on activities by the Club for the past twelve months. While the Senior Team was unlucky not to achieve promotion in the League, players at all levels performed well with the under age players winning the Cumann na mBunscol final. A minute' s silence was observed at the outset to mark the passing of former players Patsy O'Connell, Tommy Bridgeman, referee Larry McCaffrey and Johnny Coolahan. Outgoing Secretary, Joe Langan, Tarmons stated that it cost over €20,000 to run the Club for the year and the main source of revenue was the weekly Lotto. Outgoing Treasurer, Sean Finucane read and distributed a comprehensive Balance Sheet showing income exceeding expenditure by €2,100. Tributes were paid to outgoing Chairman and Secretary, Mike Carrig and Joe Langan for their work in often trying and difficult legal circumstances. Both did not seek re-election. NEW YEAR RESOLUTION 'Do all the good you can, to all the people you can, at all the times you can, in all the places you can, for as long as ever you can'. BEREAVEMENT One of the most tragic accidents of recent times occurred on Sunday afternoon last December 30th 2018 which has left this community and indeed many other communities far and wide, dump founded, saddened and reeling in shock on the learning of the sad passing of Jeremiah Holly R.I.P.of Rusheen as a result of a tragic motor bicycle accident just outside The Lanterns Hotel on the Tarbert to Glin Coast Road. Jerry as he was more affectionately known was one of nature’s quietest, hard working and respected people within this community. Aged just 50 his short life was too quickly brought to an end while leisurely taking a spin on one of his most cherished personal belongings, his yellow motorbike. On that ill fated afternoon he decided to go for a leisurely drive on this particular route, a route that he would not normally drive on and sadly the rest is what can only be described as tragic and un-imaginable. Jerry was one of five boys and three girls born to Michael and Mary Holly of Rusheen. He had been living at home and took wonderful care of his mother and father. He was a great lover of all outdoor activities and along with his father spent many hours in the bog where he really enjoyed working. During his leisure time he would spend hours playing and walking his terrier “Teddy” and a very familiar sight was to see Jerry walking along the Carrig Road with “Teddy” a lot of the time in his arms. He would occasionally go for a few drinks and would love to sing a song or two of which he was a very fine singer. Much the time he and his Dad would be heard singing not alone in local hostelries but indeed in the wide open plains of bog around the locality as they sang merrily as they did their work on a daily basis. To all of us who knew Jerry he was indeed a very quiet but a most helpful man in so many ways that it is hard to understand that he has gone from our midsts. The lovely man on the yellow motorbike all decked out in his leathers just cruising along, bothering nobody will be forever etched in our memories. Jerry was given a wonderful final tribute by all his fellow as the accompanied his remains to the Funeral Home on Tuesday evening, flanked the hearse at his removal from the Funeral home to the Church on Wednesday night and the final journey from the funeral home to Lislaughtin abbey on Wednesday. In all over 80 bikers came and took part in the final farewell to their colleague and friend as also did bikers from Clare attend. Indeed it was a credit to our local bikers who organized this so well. But it is to Jerry’s Family that our Sympathies, Thoughts and Prayers go to at this unfortunate time to his dad Mike Joe, his mom Mary his brothers John, Michael, Raymond and Paudie his sisters Mary Ann and Johanna, his fiancé Lavinia and her daughter Erika, nieces Denise, Laura and Ciara Lynch, Shandra Sorohan, Hayley, Céilí and Hannah Holly and nephew Oisín Holly, sisters-in-law Ann and Nora, aunts, uncle, relatives, neighbours and a wide circle of friends we extend our deepest sympathies. Jerry is pre-deceased by his sister Máiread. brother-in-law Joseph Lynch and uncle Seamus O’Rourke. On Wednesday evening Jerry’s remains were removed from Lynch's Funeral Home, Main Street, Ballylongford, to St. Michael of the Archangel Church, Ballylongford. Requiem Mass took place on Thursday morning, January 3rd, at 11am with funeral immediately afterwards to Lislaughtin Abbey, Ballylongford. The death has also taken place of Michael Enright R.I.P. of Naas. Co. Kildare and late of Carrig Island, Ballylongford. Michael was a retired Garda who had served in Naas most of his adult life and passed away on New Year’s Day January 1st 2019 on his 93rd year. Every summer without fail he would arrive in Bally, visit his family and friends, and even in later years when he did not like to drive the journey he would arrive on the bus. A lovely man, who has done such marvellous work around Nass and Kildare. To Michael family of wife Josephine, sons Seamus and Michael daughter Maeve, son-in-law Troy, brothers Jerry and Tom nieces, nephews family relatives and wide circle of friends we extend our deepest sympathies. Michaels remains were removed from Murphy Brothers Funeral Home, Church Lane, Naas on Friday evening last to the Church of Our Lady and St. David, Funeral Mass was on Saturday at 10.00am with Funeral immediately afterwards to St. Corban's Cemetery Naas. May they Rest in Everlasting Peace.

Book of The Week in association with

Woulfes Bookshop Listowel’s only Dedicated Bookshop Church St, Listowel - T. 068 21021 www.woulfesbookshop.ie / follow us on facebook

My year of rest and relaxation By Ottessa Moshfegh A shocking, hilarious and strangely tender novel about a young woman’s experiment in narcotic hibernation, aided and abetted by one of the worst psychiatrists in the annals of literature. Our narrator has many of the advantages of life, on the surface. Young, thin, pretty, a recent Columbia graduate, she lives in an apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan paid for, like everything else, by her inheritance. But there is a vacuum at the heart of things, and it isn’t just the loss of her parents in college, or the way her Wall Street boyfriend treats her, or her sadomasochistic relationship with her alleged best friend. It’s the year 2000 in a city aglitter with wealth and possibility; what could be so terribly wrong? This story of a year spent under the influence of a truly mad combination of drugs, designed to heal us from our alienation from this world, shows us how reasonable, even necessary, that alienation sometimes is. Blackly funny, both merciless and compassionate – dangling its legs over the ledge of 9/11 – this novel is a showcase for the gifts of one of America’s major young writers working at the height of her powers.

If l want to grow strawberries then there's no point in planting potatoes and wishing, hoping, praying that at the end of the growing season l can harvest strawberries. That's not the principle of sowing and reaping. I have to plant the right seed to bear the right fruit. The same is true in the human sphere. If I make good choices in daily life there are positive consequences in my natural life and if l sow bad habits to the flesh I will reap a harvest accordingly. However, we are more than flesh and blood and more than just natural beings. As a Bible believing Christian l believe that when l decided to accept Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour of my life, He gave me His Holy Spirit to live within me. The Lord promises in Ezekiel 36verses 26-27 "l will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My ways" So, when we receive His Spirit we become a new spiritual creation and now have the capacity to grow spiritual fruits or sow to the Spirit. This is not to be feared. It just means that in our daily lives we accept God's truths into our hearts and minds. These truths are found in the Bible. We can "feed" God's Spirit in us by reading His word, by wanting and loving what He wants and loves and obeying Him. To our amazement there is a consequent harvest in our lives. We begin to experience a peace and joy we have not known before. Our Heavenly Father has a lot to say on the subject of sowing and reaping. In Galatians chapter 6 verse7-8 He tells us "Do not be deceived ,God cannot be mocked. A man reaps what he sows, for he who sows to the flesh will of the flesh reap corruption but he who sows to the Spirit will of the Spirit reap everlasting life". Also in Ephesians chapter 5 verses 1518 He says "Therefore be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise making the most of your time... Proverbs 11 reads "the one who sows righteousness reaps a sure reward". I wish I had known His ways earlier in my life but it's never too late with God. One thing is sure we reap what we sow, more than we sow and later than we sow to quote Dr.Charles Stanley Can I invite you to join me Sunday mornings 11am at Listowel Christian Fellowship? Yours sincerely. Bridie(Dillon)Hartney
