MINISTER FOLEY WELCOMES OVER €760,000 IN EQUIPMENT FUNDING FOR 46 KERRY SPORTS CLUBS AND ORGANISATIONS
Minister for Education and Kerry TD Norma Foley welcomes the announcement that 46 Kerry clubs and sports organisations are to receive a total of €769,547 in funding under the latest round of the Sports Capital and Equipment Programme (SCEP). These specific grants will assist sports clubs and Governing Bodies of Sport to purchase crucial equipment necessary for the growth of their sport and it is expected that the allocation of grants for capital projects under the Programme will be announced towards the end of the year. Priority in this tranche of funding was given to projects that will increase participation, that are located in areas with higher levels of socio-economic disadvantage and to organisations that did not receive significant funding under the Programme previously. As we have seen from watching our incredible athletes perform in the Tokyo Olympics, sport is so much more than the sum of its parts and can lift a nation just when we need it the most. DIP IN THE NIP KERRY IN AID OF RECOVERY HAVEN CANCER SUPPORT HOUSE
Cancer support charity, Recovery Haven Kerry is thrilled to join forces with Fenit-based Wild Water Adventures to organise Kerry’s first ever, women’s-only charity Dip in the Nip this September! The exciting collaboration is the first of its kind in the Kingdom, where women of all ages are being invited to bare all and take to the water on September 18th 2021 to raise funds for the well-known cancer support charity. Billed as a fun, exciting and empowering event for women right across the country, this fundraising event is open to all women – including those who have experienced cancer themselves, those who are supporting a friend or family member on their caner journey or those who want to remember and honour a loved one who they lost to the disease. The location of the event will be kept top secret until a few days the event, but organisers are promising a truly fun and exhilarating morning for all involved with music, refreshments and some great prizes up for grabs after the dip. “This is a completely new departure for us here at Recovery Haven Kerry, but we are really excited at the thought of all amazing women of Kerry and beyond coming together in such a novel way for charity,” said Recovery Haven Kerry manager, Siobhan MacSweeney. “We truly hope that women everywhere will embrace this fun, empowering and important event and make it a truly memorable one for everyone involved.” The team at Wild Water Adventures are equally excited about the upcoming event. “We had the pleasure of running a Wild Swimming pilot project with five wonderful ladies from Recovery Haven last year and spent six Saturdays exploring, having wild swims, eating cake and laughing. To say it was the most personally rewarding work we have ever done is no small statement, as we have worked with many types of groups in many different outdoor settings for many years. We are hugely impressed with the work Recovery Haven does and are honoured to help in our own small way.” Registration, priced at €40 (plus booking fee), is now open through Eventbrite https://www. eventbrite.ie/e/kerrys-first-dip-in-the-nip-tickets-164974191247 on all Recovery Haven and Wild Water Adventure’s social media platforms and everyone who signs up will receive a custom swimming cap, a medal to mark their participation and will be automatically entered into a draw for some great prizes. Pre-registration is vital, however, as entries cannot be processed on the morning of the event.
FÍS NA HÓIGE MOVIE REVIEW AVATAR
This week Fís na hÓige member, Stella Marijic, is reviewing the movie; “Avatar”, also known as “James Cameron’s Avatar”. If you’re looking for a family friendly movie to watch, keep an eye on this page where Fís na hÓige will be reviewing the very best movies for you to watch. The story of the film “Avatar”, rated PG-13, is set in the mid-22nd century. Humans are colonizing Pandora, an earth-like habitable moon of the gas giant Polyphemus in the Alpha Centauri star system, in order to mine the valuable mineral unobtanium, which is supposed to solve the energy crisis on earth, as humans have used all of earth’s natural resources. The film follows Jake Sully (Sam Wothington), a paraplegic ex-marine who is involved in the Avatar project of the RDA, the company mining for unobtanium. Avatars are genetically engineered bodies, created by combining human and Na’vi DNA, which are then operated from the brain of the genetically matched human. The Na’vi are 3 meter tall, blue-skinned, humanoid creatures, native to Pandora, who are living in harmony with nature and worship a mother goddess named Eywa. On behalf of Colonel Miles Quaritch, Jake is ordered to gain the trust of the Omaticaya, a Na’vi clan nearby, and deliver information to the RDA about the Na’vi and their gathering place, a giant tree called Hometree. James Cameron, who directed, wrote, produced and co-edited the film, created such a deep lore of Pandora and the creatures living on it, especially the Na’vi. The animations and visual effects of the world and creatures on Pandora are otherworldly (pun intended) beautiful. The soundtrack, composed by James Horner, is stunning as it also features songs and sequences sung in the Na’vi language. Avatar is an action-adventure film, focusing on the theme of self-discovery, in the context of imperialism and deep ecology. In my opinion it even reflects on capitalism, which destroys planets and living beings on it, solely for the purpose of money. It is eye opening in relation to the viewer’s personal perception of the world we live in, how we treat the earth itself and the creatures that live on it. I recommend this film to everyone over the age of 12. It is a wonderful movie, not only regarding the visuals and the soundtrack, but also considering the storytelling and deep lore that James Cameron has created
MICHAEL HEALY RAE CALLS ON MINSTER OF HEALTH TO ENSURE ALL PATIENTS ARE ASSURED OF CONTINUED SUPPORT
Deputy Michael Healy Rae TD has called on the Minister of Health Stephen Donnelly to ensure that all patients of a rural North Kerry area are assured continued support in the wake of retirement of a local General Practitioner. With confirmation following the retirement of the local Doctor in Ballyduff that a locum will be provided to those on medical cards while other patients have been asked to find an alternative surgery. Something that has appalled the Kerry TD who has already called on the Minster for Health insisting that the locum will also see the non-medical card holders until a replacement has been found. “The Minister will have to ensure that all patients are still given the best of care and attention when needed. It is not simply good enough to say to, ‘well you have a medical card – come away in’, ‘well you don’t have a medical card – carry on off down the road’. That’s just a nonsense” Deputy Michael Healy Rae said.

Ballybunion Tidy Towns Committee ----After many months of ongoing work, Ballybunion Tidy Towns would like to an- nounce another major project will soon be completed at the southern end of town. Thanks to grants from the Local Water Authority and Clean Coast, new signage and a learning centre are being installed in the Cashen Car Park area. The signs include a Cashen Park entrance sign, a Cashen Biodiversity Garden entrance sign, a large biodiversity information board, two Ballybunion Beach Loop Walk trailhead signs and several way marker posts. Completion of the installation is soon to be in place and will be followed with a ribbon cut- ting ceremony. The main Cashen Park sign has been located beside the curragh that is at entrance to the whole area. It is in keeping with the rusted steel look of the Wild Atlantic Way sign and was designed by Beasley Engineering in Listowel. The entrance sign to the Biodiversity Garden will be along the front of the grassy area. It will be composed of 2 uprights and a lecture stand designed by Beasley Engineering in conjunction with Listowel Printing. The trailhead sign for the Beach Loop Walk was designed by Listowel Printing and is located at the top of steps down to the river and at the bottom of Strand Road on Men’s Beach, the other end of the looped walk. Arrowed waymarkers are also due to be placed along the trail to indicate the official pathway. The new information board, designed and built by Noel Nash, will be accompanied by a seating area and will make up the learning centre. It is hoped that many groups, families and classes will come to learn about these two distinct habitats and the biodiversity that lives within them. Ballybunion Tidy Towns continues with their fundraising and grant submissions in order have the funds to complete their mission to help make Ballybunion a nicer place to live, work and visit.

EVERYONE IN THIS ROOM WILL SOMEDAY BE DEAD
Activity
Meet Gilda. She cannot stop thinking about death. Desperate for relief from her anxious mind and alienated from her repressive family, she responds to a flyer for free therapy at a local church and finds herself abruptly hired to replace the deceased receptionist Grace. It’s not the most obvious job - she’s queer and an atheist for starters - and so in between trying to learn mass, hiding her new maybegirlfriend and conducting an amateur investigation into Grace’s death, Gilda must avoid revealing the truth of her mortifying existence.
* Regular exercise and physical activity promotes strong muscles and bones. It improves respiratory, cardiovascular health, and overall health. Staying active can also help you maintain a healthy weight. Getting out in the daylight and being active for at least 30 minutes a day ,5 times a week is beneficial to our overall wellbeing. Being active also releases endorphins which makes us feel happy. Sleep * Make sure to get at least 6 to 8 hours sleep at night, as sleep has a huge impact on how we feel both emotionally and physically. Setting a going to bed time is equally as important as setting a wake up time. Also avoid being on devices before bedtime ie. phone/laptop in order to be able to unwind and relax and get a good nights sleep. Stress * Reducing stress is also key. Many of us are probably under more stress now than ever before with regards to the situation we are all in. Think about ways to calm yourself after a stressful day. A long soak in the bath with candles lighting is therapeutic and relaxing. Picking up the phone and chatting to someone can also help after all “a problem shared is a problem halved”. Self love *Treat yourself with respect and kindness as you would with your best friend, after all you can be your own best friend or your own worst enemy. There is a saying that we like to use which is “ What you think determines how you feel, and how you feel determines what you do” Thought for the week: “Your mind is a garden, your thoughts are the seeds, You can grow flowers,or you can grow weeds.”
By Emily Austin
A blend of warmth, deadpan humour, and pitch-perfect observations about the human condition, Everyone in This Room Will Someday Be Dead is a crackling exploration of what it takes to stay afloat in a world where your expiration - and the expiration of those you love - is the only certainty.

DEFIBRILLATOR An URGENT appeal is being made in regards to a Fundraiser for a new defibrillator. A go fund me page has been set up which can be found online on the gofundme website by searching for Ballylongford on the website or by searching for new defibrillator needed in Ballylongford. Or at the link Fundraiser by Ballylongford Enterprise Association : New Defibrillator needed in Ballylongford (gofundme.com) . A new Defibrillator is needed in Ballylongford as the current one on the Church gate, adjacent to the Parish Hall is not working and has reached the end of its lifespan as it will be ten years old soon. It is of the utmost importance that we have a working defibrillator in the town and this fundraiser is being organised by The Ballylongford Enterprise Association who are hoping to raise the necessary funds, to purchase a new modern defibrillator with a cabinet, with accompanying pads and the relevant equipment that is required and also to have the funds to retain the first responders in the area and also train new first responders. The sooner the funds are raised and we can get this lifesaving equipment the better as it will be out in the public eye ready for use should it be required and it will not be locked away. It will be erected in the same area which will be very close to the Ballylongford national school. The Enterprise Association are hoping to raise €6,000 euro and are asking kindly for donations of any amount please. We all know how important this lifesaving equipment is and especially considering the distance to the nearest hospital from the area, therefore a defibrillator is vital in saving lives. We have many members of our community with heart conditions and some with stints bypasses etcetera etc. However, it is not just people with underlying conditions who may need the use of this lifesaving equipment as anyone in the community may need it including our children as heart problems, SADS and other medical conditions could affect everybody including our children. Even the most healthiest of people could require the use of this equipment to save their lives, the shocking scenes where professional footballer and super fit Christian Ericsson at the European Championships suffered cardiac arrest on the pitch only to be saved by the use of a defibrillator further highlighted that nobody knows when they may need the use of a Defibrillator. So, if you could please donate to such a worthy cause it would be greatly appreciated by everyone in the community and there is nothing too small as everything helps. This Fundraiser is organised by the Ballylongford Enterprise Association who have done magnificent work in our community. Such as purchasing the creamery and selling it for a profit of over 200,000 and out of this money the Parish Hall was fully refurbished and modernised with an elevator for those with disabilities, the elevator costs over €1,000 a year to run and maintain. The old fire station (O’Sullivan’s Hardware Shop) was also purchased by the group. This is one of the many works that the Enterprise Association has done for the town. The Enterprise Association runs the Oyster Festival every year but unfortunately due to Coronavirus this has not taken place since 2019 but hopefully will return in 2022. The Enterprise is currently in the process of constructing a war of independence walk in the town with the plaques currently under construction with some ready to be erected. The Ballylongford Enterprise Association and the Chairman of the Association Noel Lynch is appealing for everybody’s help and would like to say thank you for any donations which would be greatly accepted. BLACKSMITHING FAIR The first event at Ballylongford Mill, will be the forthcoming Ballylongford Blacksmithing Fair which will be held over the weekend of 25th-26th September, 2021. There will be blacksmithing displays in the Creamery and grounds from Forged in Ireland and guest Blacksmiths, vintage tractors, hand forged and old wares for sale, food and refreshments and roving musicians. Co-incidentally Limerick were the first county to win the Liam McCarthy Cup when they won the 1921 hurling championship one hundred years ago. For the past couple of weeks there has been a great profusion of Green and White flags throughout the parish testifying to the number of Limerick people who have crossed the county bounds over the years to seek their fame and fortune in the Kingdom. Well done to John Cregan, Chairman of the Limerick County Board whose father, the late Councillor Tommy Cregan was a native of Tarbert and whose mother came from Lenamore. Gura fada buan siad.! WINDOW ON THE PAST The Limerick Flag with its green and white bars carries the emblem of the Treaty Stone and nearby King John’s Castle with the slogan ‘Cuimhnigh ar Luimneach’ underneath. Tom was born to Jack Scanlon and Han Walshe in 1943 in Leitrim Middle. He was an only child and lived in Leitrim Middle until about ten years ago when he moved to Woodgrove. He was a character in the true sense of the word, and indeed there are not many such people left any more. He loved all sports, player one choice and he loved going to Galway every year and the Curragh and of course the loced a bit of football when he was young and had friends all over the world. Racing was his numbal meetings in Listowel. He was well acquainted with trainers such as Tommy Stack, Jessica Harrington and many others. Tom wrote a bit of poetry and attended Writer’s Week in Listowel. This is one of his poems about the area where he lived called “MEMORIES” As my mind rolls back o’er memories track To the days when we were young Not a care had we, only wild and free And many a song was sung. We’d fish along the riverbank As the sun was blazing down And gather round the old big stone That stood there large and brown.

lations between Ireland and England for centuries. On 5 October 1691 a great French fleet sailed into the Shannon estuary. Only 2 days earlier the defeated followers of Catholic King James 11 under their leader Patrick Sarsfield had signed the Treaty of Limerick with Dutch General Ginkell representing King William of Orange. Under the terms of the Treaty Catholics in Ireland were to have full civil and religious liberty and property rights. With the arrival of fresh French allies Sarsfield’s followers urged him to tear up the treaty. Sarsfield refused to break his oath saying their honour was pledged. Sarsfield and some 5,000 of his followers sailed to France as the Wild Geese to fight for the French king. With Sarsfield and his army gone the English Parliament rejected the Treaty negotiated in their King’s name. Instead of granting freedom of worship and equality to Catholics they proceeded to supress the Catholic religion in Ireland over the next number of years by enactment of the Penal Laws. Irish brigades fighting abroad against England and her allies would subsequently go into battle with the war cry ‘Cuimhnigh ar Luimneach agus ar fheall na Sasanaigh’ Remember Limerick and Saxon treachery. SEANFHOCAIL NA SEACHTAINE ‘Fear óg falsa, sean fhear bocht’ - A young lazy person becomes an old poor person. ‘Ní hualach do dhuine a bhrat ná a bróga’ - A person’s clothes or shoes are no load to carry. ‘Luigh leis an uan agus éirigh leis an éan - Go to bed with the lamb and rise with the bird, early to bed and early to rise

We’d rest a while and spend an hour Beneath the Russian’s bridge. The McGraths, the Moriartys, the Walshes from the hill Would come down there in the warm air To laugh and sport their fill. To Molly Donovan’s we would retire To pass away the night With the old gramophone and a game of cards And many a dacent fight They are scattered now throughout the land And some are in their graves Others are gone far and wide Across the Atlantic waves. But where e’re they are gone Or what e’re they’ve done They will always remember back To their boyhood days And their happy ways Around the Mail Road Cross. Tom slattery also took on the 600 metres U-12 and with an air of confidence beyond his young years ran a fantastic semi final to cruise home. In the final Tom ran very smartly to win a fantastic bronze medal in a superb display. In the boys under 10’s 100 metres we were represented by a very famous

The afternoon session also had other fantastic performances with Andy Costelloe running brilliantly to secure a spot in the u-12 100 metres final. In one of the toughest races of the day Andy was very unlucky not to win a medal narrowly missing out in 5th place! Ashlyn Falvey also took part in the girls 100.metres and cruised through to the final where she went on to win a fantastic Bronze medal!! Attention turned to the field events and first up in the u-12 Ball throw was Kiera O Sullivan who took to the stage with a coolness that belied her young years. Kiera powered the ball outwards to secure a Gold medal and an automatic spot in the All-Irelands in October!!! The O Connell clan were again represented, this time in the u-12 Long Puck with Sean O Connell performing heroics with three superb pucks, however luck was not on his side and he narrowly missed out by centimetres on a medal. In the last event of the day and also displaying an air of supreme coolness was Emily O Donoghue who also displayed supreme skills with a hurl to win a Bronze medal in the u-14 Long Puck competition!! The day was about alot more than medals though, it was about reacquainting with old friends and also making new ones as the now famous Abbeydorney / Kilflynn community spirit shone through again. A special thank you to all the supporters and mentors and also to Kerry Community Games for a wonderful Day one, under unusual circumstances. Day 2 of the County Athletics Finals saw our young u-14 and u-16 athletes take to the track, many for the first time!! First up was Maurice Costello who ran a fantastic u-14 100 metres race to finish 10th overall and this young star will be back again in this age category next year! In one of the most gruelling races of the day the 800 metres u-14 Boys saw Aidan Bernie run a superb semi final and was very unlucky to miss out on a final place in his first year at this level. Lots more to come from this talented young man. In the Girls 800 metres final we were represented by the multi talented Lisa Slattery who was also attempting the distance for the first time. Lisa ran a very clever race and claimed a highly creditble 6th place narrowly missing out on a medal. Next up was the hotly contested Boys u-16 200 metres final with young Cian Mangan also stepping onto the track for the first time. Cian ran a brilliant race against highly experienced athletes but just missed out on the medals. Cian is another rising star who will learn from the experience and will be back for more!! In the u-16 200 metres we had Eva Costello who also displayed the athletic talents possessed by her siblings. Eva ran an absolutely fantastic semi final qualifying for the final in her first year. Eva competed exceptionally well in the final but again narrowly missed out on the medal spots. The last race of the day saw Laura Falvey step up in the u-14 100 metre final following an excellent semi final win. The final contained alot of talented runners but Laura was not to be denied and stormed to a GOLD medal in an absolutely fantastic race Thanks again to all our wonderful Athletes, Families and Mentors and we look forward to a bright future with all our fabulous young people ST. KEEPING PARISH FINANCES HEALTHY As Covid 19 continues, July 2021. Bishop Ray Browne has written to the priests of the diocese, asking them to keep the members of their Parish Finance Council and all parishioners informed about the financial state of the parish, arising from the effects of Covid 19 on parishes. It is understandable that he wishes parishioners to be well informed about the income and expenditure of the parish and that the financial contributions of all parishioners should be appreciated. With regard to the general financial position in the diocese (parish income only – not priest income), the following figures give an indication: 30% of parishes have collections (envelopes, cash contributions, direct debits etc.) similar to last year, with a small number of parishes showing an increase in the amount given. 25% of parishes show collections down 10-15% 25% of parishes show collections down 20-30% It should be remembered that 2020 returns were down almost 40% on 2019. ‘Considering that the first four months of the year had no congregations, the picture is quite positive. It is encouraging that so many people are loyal to their parish.’ Further information about our own parish will be given in next week’s Parish Newsletter. Because some people have not returned to weekend Mass attendance, could you take a Newsletter to them! (Fr. Denis O’Mahony.) HURLING RESULTS Coiste Chontae Ciarraí Co. This is Eimear’s first individual medal at community games and she will be back next year for more action we’re sure. U16 boys 1500m: Representing our area in this race was James Dillon. St. Pio was an extraordinary man of prayer. He began at 2am to prepare for mass. His mass was quite an experience. Even at that hour the church was packed, and the mass was liable to go on for hours. He would go into extacy and the mass would never end unless the superior was in the gallery to tell him: “Give the Final Blessing.”
