MINISTER FOLEY WELCOMES €169,000 IN FUNDING FOR KERRY PARENTS AND FRIENDS ASSOCIATION

Education Minister and Kerry TD Norma Foley welcomes the announcement of €169,000 in funding for Kerry Parents and Friends Association through the Strengthening Disability Services Fund. This one-off grant is to provide targeted support to reform disability services, build the capacity of disability organisations and to improve the quality of life of those who rely on these services. The fund will be used in a variety of ways, including the development of facilities, progressing wellbeing programmes, provision of counsellor/ psychotherapy services as well as other essential projects. Kerry Parents and Friends Association is awarded the grant funding to redevelop their Approved Housing Body. Minister Foley said: “I welcome this funding which will provide a major boost for Kerry Parents and Friends Association – who provide such vital services throughout Kerry.”

Are you still ticking all the boxes or have you eased off with your efforts? Keeping a journal of the changes you are making is another way of keeping yourself accountable and on track. Research proves that people who write and keep track of the above things feel far more confident and in control of their weight and wellness. There are **several ways to keep track of the changes that you need to keep doing such as writing into a diary/journal or using an app on your mobile phone .These all help to to be aware and accountable for the improvements you are making in your lifestyle. Why is it good to write things down? When you write things down it makes you more aware of exactly what you want to do. It also makes you more committed to following it through. You are also more organized and it puts a plan of action in place. Does writing things down help you feel better? It’s simply just writing down your thoughts and feelings to understand them more clearly. And if you struggle with stress, depression, or anxiety, keeping a journal is a great idea. It can help you gain control of your emotions and improve your mental health. How can writing things down help you be more committed? By writing things down you can check or review your progress on whether you are achieving your goals. This should be done on a monthly, weekly and daily basis. Be realistic on the goals you want to achieve. Setting an unrealistic goal that does not fit into your own personal lifestyle may not be achievable and leave you feeling like you have failed. What can we learn from writing things down? By writing things down we can learn more about ourselves. We can identify our strengths and our weaknesses and be more aware of what we are good at and what we need to improve on. It would create an opportunity to identify where our threats lie and how we avoid them. How can writing things down keep you accountable? At San Rita Wellness we encourage our members to keep a tracker or journal of their daily food intake. By writing it down they are more aware, mindful and accountable. When our members check in for their weekly weigh in they are not alone accountable to someone else but they are also focused and motivated. BLACKSMITHING FAIR A great weekend in Ballylongford as the Ballylongford Blacksmithing Fair was held on Sat. 25 and Sun. 26th September last. The Blacksmiths from Forged in Ireland were busy all weekend demonstrating their forging skills and chatting to the crowd. The Blacksmith Fair was a fundraising event to raise funds to repair the roof of The Ballylongford Mill. The Blacksmiths came from all over Ireland bringing with them original handmade equipment and handmade items for sale, they also made pieces on site for sale. During the weekend they showed their skills and technique, we also had Raynor Cherry who is a copper smith showing his skills. The creamery site where it was held had not been used since the creamery closed in 1998. A very special thanks to Sean Feeney who’s been the driving force behind running the weekend, Sean organised and managed the event, Joe Deegan, Helen Lane, Mark Dillon and Jamie Triscele Smith and

all the lads and ladies from Forged in Ireland for attendance and making the Ballylongford Blacksmith Fair possible, Ballylongford Enterprises for the food and refreshments, Conchobhar and Helena O Suilleabhain, from the Military History Club dressed in stunning historical costumes from Napoleon’s Irish Legion, and Pat Scully running pony and trap rides for the kids. Karl White, Ballybunion Photography Club, Jim Mc Sweeney and friends, Tim Lynch and the vintage tractor people, and Michael Horgan our musician. On Sunday, the vintage tractor people arrived, displaying some great old machines and participating in a tractor tug-of-war with chains hand forged by the Blacksmiths, and award-winning photographer Jim Mc Sweeney in the Ballylongford Parish Hall taking free studio photographs. The highlight of Sunday afternoon was the competition to forge a brooch in steel inspired by the 1,400-year-old bronze Tullahennel Brooch in Kerry County Museum. Sheila Edgeworth who found the original brooch in the ashes of their turf fire at Martara, Ballylongford in 2009, was present to pick the winner of the competition who was Sean Dunwoodie. A fantastic weekend for the village and thanks to everyone who helped out on the day, looking forward to more events at Ballylongford Mill next year. Ballylongford Village Tour: Ballylongford Village Tour was held on Sat.25 Sept. organised by Kerry Architecture with historian Dr.Declan Downey. Dr Declan Downey talked about the history of Ballylongford Village which goes back to the Vikings, also St. Michael’s Church, Lislaughtin Friary and Carrigafoyle Castle. SCENE Ballylongford GAA Club is looking forward to getting back to some normality over the coming months as our teams start to get back to playing games again. U14 CAMOGIE FINAL Well done to the U14 Ballyduff Camogie girls who won the Cup Final of the League after defeating Sliabh Luachra in Ballyduff last Wednesday evening. It was a tough match, and the weather conditions were not

great. Ballyduff were down a point with two minutes to go. However, the girls did not give up and played their hearts out. With one minute to go Ballyduff buried a goal into the back of the net to record a famous victory. What a fantastic end to the season. Well done to all the girls and their management. SYMPATHY Sympathy of the community is extended to Aggie McMahon (née Kiely) of Sandhill Road, Ballybunion and formerly of Main Street, Tarbert on the death of her husband Michael (Mike) McMahon, Ballybunion. Michael who had been on kidney dialysis for some years, died suddenly at home, on Monday 27 September. His Requiem Mass was concelebrated by Fr Eugene Kiely, Ballyferriter, cousin, and Fr Sean Hanafin, P.P. Ballybunion on Wednesday 29 September. Music, lyrics and hymns for the service were provided by the Kiely family. Co-incidentally, Mike who was aged 79 was born on the Feast of St Michael and his funeral Mass was celebrated on the Feast Day of three Archangels including St Michael. The late Michael and his wife Aggie were married in Tarbert. They emigrated to the U.S. and Mike worked for over twenty years in construction in the Bronx, New York before returning home to Ireland and North Kerry in 1978, working in the Aughanish construction project. Sympathy also to his daughter Mary, four sons - Michael, Dan, Brendan and Kevin, brothers and sister, and the extended McMahon, Kiely and Purtill families. SAFETY BARRIER Councillor Michael Foley writes that he has been advised by Kerry County Council that work will commence on the erection of a Safety Barrier between the two piers at Tarbert Island on 18 October. The contract has been awarded to Glas and will involve removal of the existing collapsed barrier and its replacement with a containment kerb and pedestrian railing. Due to the scenic location a granite style finish for the kerb and a powder coated black railing has been recommended. Other minor improvements will be carried out to enhance the existing footpath. Our seniors succumbed to the challenges of Castlegregory on Sunday and we exited the County Junior Club Championship at the quarter final stages. We started well and had the advantage at the short whistle, 1-5 to 0-4, despite being a man down for a black card offence. However, the wheels came off our wagon and we managed just two points from frees in the second half. A red card offence meant we ended the game with fourteen players. We were five points adrift at the final whistle: Beale 1-7, Castlegregory 0-15. Our 2020 North Kerry Senior Championship semi-final with Desmonds is rescheduled for Sunday, October 17th, at 2 o’clock. Venue to be confirmed. Desmonds B are our opponents in the preliminary round of the North Kerry Intermediate Cup on Sunday, October 24th, in Duagh. The draw for the North Kerry Senior and Minor Championships will take place on Monday, 11th October, at 8 o’clock. The draw will be live streamed on Facebook. North Kerry are currently second place on the table. A win here could mean a place in the qualifiers, depending on results from other games.

Together with fellow St Patrick’s teammates, Robert Stack and Pa Walsh, Mike was among the Shannon Rangers squad who claimed the County Championship title in 1964, when they overcame a fancied East Kerry side in the final. In the semi-final they had put paid to South Kerry, who were powered by county players, Mick O’Connell and Mick O’Dwyer. During the 1960s, the Parish League was a local tournament held in high regard. Mike and his brother, Jim, lined out with The Town team, winning 3-ina-row in the early sixties. The tradition of ‘The Wren’ was revived in 1961 and for many years, the McMahon brothers joined their teammates, on horseback, bringing music, song and merriment to homes in the locality on St Stephen’s Day. Beale GAA is proud that this tradition continues to this day. His brothers, Jim and Tom, were also Beale footballers of note and Mike’s grandson, Peter, wore the club colours until recently. We extend deepest condolences to the McMahon and extended family. Ar dheis Dé gurb a anam dhíl.

It has been a relatively quite week in terms of on field activity. The U11s played their last game of the season against Beale, in Ballybunion. These boys have had a great season and it was wonderful to see them finish up with a fine display against Beale. The end of year bash saw the group go paintballing in Tralee with plenty of pizzas, sausages and beverages afterwards. The highlight of the afternoon was a medal presentation and each boy got their medal from the Kerry Minor Football manager James Costello! James had great words of advice for the boys also and is expecting to see plenty more Finuge boys playing in the Kingdom green & gold in the future! Thank you, Mr Costello, for giving your time. Our U9s took part in a wonderful blitz hosted by Moyvane where teams from North Kerry & West Clare took part. This is a great initiative with our lads playing Clann Lir, Kildysart and Western Gaels all from Clare. Well done to all involved in organising this, especially our GDA John Dillon. The U9s also brought a close to their season with the last training session followed by a pizza party afterwards. All the boys and girls received medals by way of recognition for their hard work throughout the season. A huge effort was put in by everybody across the year with lots of progress being made. Well done to all involved and enjoy the break! The U7s travelled to neighbours Ballyduff last week for more Go Games action.
