ORGANIGO & MÁIRE REVIVING NORTH KERRY MARKET DAY!
We need you to support your local producers, businesses and growers and all you have to do is join Listowel Neighbourfood now. What is neighbourfood? Its an online platform for you the customer to buy from local suppliers, there are over a 100 online markets running in Ireland. They run weekly and you collect your order at a collection time, Listowels collection time will be Friday 1-4 and Saturday 10 – 1. Why would you join? Because you would be supporting your local community and also its a more efficient market for small local businesses. As much as we all love the markets stalls it just dosnt pay SME’s to stand outside for at least 4/5 hours in the hope of selling and if they don’t product often goes to waste. With Neighbourfood suppliers get their order Thursday morning and deliver fresh on Friday before collection. They get paid within 4-6 days of delivery. Its great for small businesses. I’ve been doing Limerick and Killarney Neighbourfood markets for over a year and can say they have been a god send once I got going. We have Larry Buckley as our butcher, Kearney’s Bakery are doing our gluten free breads, we have Kerry Kefir for the fermented milk range, Ardfert Dairys are doing our milk, Devine preserves are onboard with their amazing jams, marmalades and chutneys, Blasta delights, Leagh Farm from Ballyduff, Lizzy’s Little Kitchen and Yessca Flowers. We have more suppliers joining and I’d love for people to get in contact via Instagram or call into the shop to me. I’m sorting logistics to try get the famous foxglove cocktails from Cork on board (as we did the SuperValu Food Academy together and we’re both supplying Killarney market so I’m hoping we can do a pick up there) plus a few more cool Irish niche products coming soon.
LISTOWEL DID IT AGAIN
Representatives Mary O‘Hanlon and KCC Cathaoirleach Cllr Jimmy Moloney of Listowel Tidy Towns were reeling with excitement in the RDS as it was announced that Listowel were bringing home yet another Gold medal in the National Tidy Towns competition After a very difficult two years this came as a huge surprise. Not alone did Listowel bring home their 13th Gold medal for best small town, it was also highly commended in the County Awards, with Killarney as County Award Winner. When you get to the high standard in the competition that Listowel has reached, especially having won the All Ireland Tidiest Town in 2018, it is extremely difficult to maintain those standards. Despite the fact that there are extra competititors coming on board nationwide every year, Listowel still managed to gain 7 extra points this year. What an achievement!!!! Listowel Tidy Towns group would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who contributed their time and helped in any way in making Listowel the beautiful town that it is today. We would also like to acknowledge the tremendous input by KKC and their ground staff, CE workers, The Business Alliance Group, resident associations and community groups who played a part in Listowel’s successful entry this year. Jackie (PRO) On behalf of the present Tidy Towns group, would like to acknowledge previous Tidy Towns members who paved the way in making a small marketing town into a little gem in north Kerry. A huge “Thank you” to you all. The work of Tidy Towns is never plain sailing and like every other Tidy Towns Group, Listowel are always appealing for new volunteers and new ideas. The people of Listowel have bought into the theme of “Tidy Towns” and hopefully this theme will continue into the future.
2021 TIDYTOWNS ADJUDICATION POINTS ANNOUNCED
BALLYBUNION TIDY TOWNS
Ballybunion Tidy is pleased to announce they have garnered 6 additional points in the 2021 national Tidy Towns competition. This give our town a total of 318 out of the 470 points possible. Our improvement points were spread over the 8 categories that make up the competition. We improved 2 points in “Streetscape & Public Places” and “Tidiness & Litter Control”. Another 1 point was won in “Planning & Involvement” and “Sustainability”. We remained static in the remaining 4 categories: “Green Spaces & Landscaping”, “Nature & Biodiversity”, “Residential Streets & Housing Areas” and “Approach Roads, Streets & Lanes. So, there is still a lot that needs doing in the future to improve our community. Your Ballybunion TidyTowns committee is committed to: • continuing all the maintenance jobs that have earned Tidy Towns its points so far, • continuing with the future community projects at the Cashen and along Strand Road we have outlined in our submission. But to continue earning more than a handful of points, we need to fulfil more of the judge’s specific suggestions. The issue is those suggestions falls under the control of local businesses, private premises and Kerry County Council. So, we feel it only fitting to share with you the specific suggestions made by adjudicators in 2019 and 2020. The judges propose the following: • planting trees at Ahafona, along East End, down Kit Ahern Rd, in the ground on Main Street, along Doon Rd, at Doon Cross, along Hillview Close, in the cemeteries, housing estates, the parking lots of the church, supermarket & Leisure Center and in private gardens, • increasing the planting of flowers, bushes and wild flowers in private gardens and public green areas, • painting all unpainted & shabby gable walls along Main St., • painting, rendering and installing climbing plants on bare block walls around town, • providing biodiversity walks for locals, visitors & students, • increasing the use of PV solar panels on public & private buildings, • finding innovate ways for businesses to tackle food waste, plastic recycling and energy usage, • having property owners using mulching mowers, self watering baskets/ window boxes and hoeing to maintain control over weeds, • increasing the use of Litter Wardens for offenders, • establishing housing estate committees to address & encourage maintenance and improvement of common areas and private gardens through completions, • redesigning Ahafona and Doon Cross, • reducing the inappropriate size of directional signage in town centre, • resurfacing the lanes, streets & footpaths, and • placing overhead cables underground down Main St. Working together with a focus on the judge’s recommendations, we hope Ballybunion will do better in the 2022 competition. In turn, this will help make Ballybunion a better, more attractive and healthier place to live.
TOASTMASTERS RETURN TO LIVE MEETINGS
Club members from Listowel Toastmasters are delighted to have returned to live in-person meetings in recent weeks. After over a year holding their club meetings online via Zoom, members met up at the Kerry Writers’ Museum to hold their first in-person meeting since Spring 2020. Toastmasters is all about improving confidence in public speaking and members all agreed it was fantastic to return to a live audience. From job interviews and wedding speeches to everyday conversation, developing skills in public speaking has many benefits career-wise and life in general. Learning in Toastmasters is all centred around practical training including listening to others speak at meetings, delivering short readings and speeches and taking part in the impromptu topics session. Topics are a fun part of every club meeting which so far this season has heard members’ thoughts on the pros and cons of a tea spoon to favourite hiking spots, personal fashion faux-pas, pets and dating letdowns. The club now intends to hold an open night for guests and new members at its next meeting at 8pm on Thursday, November 25th. Guests are welcome to attend the meeting at the Kerry Writers’ Museum. Cost €5. Covid vaccination cert and ID required. Contact Listowel Toastmasters on Facebook for more information.

SAN RITA WELLNESS
Welcome to San Rita Wellness weekly column…
We have heard a lot of alarming news over the last few weeks in relation to numbers going in the wrong direction. We all know that more restrictive steps have be taken to bring these numbers down. At the end of the day it comes down to each and every one of us to play our part. Whether it is the numbers relating to Covid or the numbers on the scales. Either way we have to stay positive as thinking and feeling negative won’t help the situation or change the outcome.

Positivity vs Negativity
www.woulfesbookshop.ie / follow us on facebook
So let’s get more positive It is well proven that “What we think, determines how we feel and how we feel determines what we do” so it does really all start with our thoughts. Think back over the past week and answer these questions yourself: What went well for you this past week? (Food choices, Activity, Weekend) How did you make that happen? (Planned ahead, Made the time) How did that help you? (Felt in control, More organized) How did it make you feel? (Happy, Focused, In Control) Will you continue doing the same for this week? What are your Challenges? We all face a challenging time, whether it’s night time or the weekends etc. Think about your own challenges that you came up against recently on your Weightloss and Wellness journey. What were the factors leading up to it ? ( Weather, Feeling fed up etc) How did that leave you feeling? (Sad, Stressed) How did you react? (Eat, Eat and Eat) How did you feel then? (Out of Control, Off Track) If you were faced with the same challenges again this week How could you react differently? Would it make a difference to how you feel? When you find yourself struggling it’s important to think positive to keep yourself inspired and to keep trying. For example, You could look back on how far you have come from when you first started. Recognise the changes you feel and see in yourself. As we know nothing is ever just “Black and White” it is important to look at the “Grey” area in between. For example: Imagine you have eaten something unplanned for, it’s very easy to think negatively then and say to yourself “ I have ruined the day now “ feel bad about it and go on to eat more and then a bad day can lead to another bad day. So the “Grey“ area in this case would be to think more positively and say to yourself “Well it’s only one thing or one day, I can still pull this back“. We should think and talk to ourselves like we would to a friend.

BALLYLONGFORD CHURCH ARRANGEMENTS Thankfully as we continue with the current eased restrictions that are in place since the Government announcement on Tuesday, October 19th, we earnestly hope that the current surge in the virus will not affect people from going to mass in our churches throughout the dioceses and beyond in these coming weeks. Therefore, attendance at masses in both St Michael the Archangel Church in Ballylongford and the attendance arrangements for Masses in St Mary’s Church in Asdee will continue to remain in place so all “Religious services and weddings can proceed without capacity limits but with all other protective measures remaining in place. This is a very positive measure, however it is imperative that all other Covid-19 protective measures remain in place in order to protect all members of our communities/congregations Premises should be well ventilated, hand sanitiser will be provided. Places of Worship will continue to use separate entry and exit routes and face masks must be worn. Congregations are encouraged to spread out as much as possible when attending Places of Worship and those experiencing any Covid-19 symptoms should be discouraged from attending. Masses at St Michael the Archangel Church for this coming Weekend are as follows: Friday 26th November 10.00am November Private Intention. Saturday 27th November Vigil Mass at 7.00pm Annie Curtin Birthday Remembrance, John, Ellen & Liam Morrissey Main Street. Sunday morning. 28th November 10.30am Fr. John Enright Anniversary Mass, and Fr John Walsh Ballyline. Masses in St Mary’s Asdee are as follows: Thursday 25th November at 10.00am. Sunday 28th November 9.30am. Michael Moran, late of Shannon. Next Sunday is the First Sunday of Advent, the First Sunday in the Church’s year. November the Month of the Holy Souls: As we quickly approach the Month of the Holy Souls, we are encouraged to pray for those who have gone before us, family and friends. However, it does not end there for we are asked also to pray for those who may have no one to pray for them. In this way we are joined to others in the Christian family and reminded that we are a wide community united in our belief in Jesus and his Resurrection. Those in purgatory cannot pray for themselves but one day they may be able to pray for us when we are in the same position. Perhaps this is why Pope St John XXIII wrote the following words “The devotion to the memory of the dead is one of the most beautiful expressions of the Catholic spirit.” Also visiting cemeteries is a significant way we can devote ourselves to the Holy Souls this November. Beginning with our own deceased family members and friends, visiting their graves is an opportunity for reflection and meditation. Personal offerings, such as candles and flowers, or just keeping the family plot clean and tidy and it also gives us an opportunity in keeping our graves in check so why not make a visit even in these last days of the month of the Holy Souls. The Holy Rosary is said each day in November for the Holy Souls at 4pm in St Michael the Archangel Church. BEREAVEMENT Deepest Sympathies are extended to Liam & Mary Purtill and Family of Main Street, on the sad passing of Liam’s beloved nephew Simon O’Connor R.I.P. who sadly passed from this life very recently. Simon was son of Margie (Née Purtill) and the late John O’Connor R.I.P. who had returned to Ireland from the U.K. in the 70’s and set up a very successful foodstore in Charleville, in Co. Cork where they operated for many years, in later years they retired to Newtownshandrum from where Margie and her daughter Juliette reside. Simon had worked in London as a property manager, but visited regularly, like most of his siblings he had spent a good
18
deal of his childhood in and around Ballylongford visiting his Uncles and cousins for holidays and became very popular and made many friends around the Community. Sadly Simon lost his dad John R.I.P. in 2013 this unfortunately followed with the very sad passing of two of his brothers in earlier years with the sad passing of the late Vincent R.I.P. who was only 13 years of age when he died as a result of a tragic accidental drowning incident in Beale and then his brother Kevin R.I.P. who was taken far too young from his family and wide circle of friends both here and in Charleville when he was only 38years of age. To Simon’s heartbroken family of wife Amalia, son Daniel, daughter Suzanne, mom Margie, sister Juliette, Uncles Liam (Ballylongford), Vincent (Ballybunion), Aunt’s Mary (Galway) and Juliette (Dublin), cousins, family relatives, and wide circle of friends we extend our deepest sympathies. Simon’s funeral will take place in London. May the light of heaven shine on him and may he Rest in Peace. VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Are you interested in becoming a Volunteer Driver? IT IS LOOKING VERY MUCH LIKE CHRISTMAS Yes it is looking very much like Christmas even though we are still in the month of November. Again, this year the wonderful volunteers that are involved in “Lighting Up Bally” for Christmas are very hard at work already. This year’s Christmas Tree is in place at the Church Gate, but has to be decorated as yet, and a number of preparation jobs such as power lines etc are been put in place. In a bid to alleviate some of the huge costs involved and in a bid to add new items to the Village the organizers have set up a GoFundMe page on Facebook and can be accessed by the following link https://gofund.me/55684de2 where you can learn more and donate to this wonderful work that is being carried out by such marvellous people. It is also nice to see that Patsy O’Connell and family are busy also preparing their residence for their spectacular Annual Christmas Lights display. Well done to all concerned and again your generous support would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. Ballyduff GAA would like to apologise to patrons for the non-function of the scoreboard. It was circumstances beyond our control as the repairman was unfortunately struck down with COVID-19 Minor Football: Well, done to our minor football team on their fantastic victory over favourites Moyvane at Asdee GAA Grounds on Sunday morning. While this was essentially a team effort the foundation was laid with Adam Segal and Evan Boyle in complete control at midfield and the forwards particularly, two goal hero Luke Rochford, in flying form. Ballyduff led by six points halfway through the second half, but Moyvane tried hard and had reduced the deficit to one point in injury time. However, a great run out of defence by Kieran O’Carroll saw him brought down forty metres out from goals. Kieran took the resultant free and sent over an important score to seal victory on the score line of Ballyduff 2 – 12 to 1 – 13. Ballyduff team: Killian Boyle; Ryan O’Rourke, Aaron Whyte, Killian Murphy; Rory Whelan, Luke Kennelly, Stiofan Carrig; Adam Segal, Evan Boyle; Aodhan Curley, Kieran O’Carroll, Anthony Kavanagh; Dean Allen, Jack Enright, Luke Rochford. North Kerry Football Championship: The North Kerry Senior Football Championship Sponsored by McMunn’s Bar and Restaurant, Ballybunion saw Ballyduff make a successful start to their quest for a place in the second round of North Kerry Championship when they defeated Tarbert at Ballyduff on Saturday evening last. Ballyduff made a brilliant start with points from Mikey Boyle free, Kevin Goulding play, Podge Boyle with 1–1 and Darragh Slattery a point left us leading 1 – 4 to 0 – 2 at the first water break. An Eoin Ross goal and points from Mikey and Kevin left us ahead 2 – 7 to 0 – 4 at halftime. BALLYBUNION BALLYBUNION CHRISTMAS LIGHTS APPEAL The Pandemic has impacted hugely on the Incomes of so many Individuals and Businesses in the town and we the Ballybunion Community Forum were totally dependent on their support but the Forum has now experienced a total collapse in funding. The cost of running the Tourist Office is €6,000 per annum which includes Rent, Phones and Electricity, together with miscellaneous advertising material, while the Christmas lights and trees cost another €5,000 which includes installation costs (including teleporter rental), the erecting of the Christmas trees, and the replacing of bulbs, which is a big expense every year primarily due to weather conditions in the town, while the other unavoidable overhead is insurance which amounts to €1,650 annually and is a necessary requirement covering the Tourist Office and other events in the town. Our funding model is now broken, which makes our ability to provide for any events, near impossible, but we are going ahead with preparations for this Christmas Season, in particular providing for Christmas trees and Lights. Last year, the Forum with financial assistance from Cormac and Elaine Cahill of SuperValu, ensured that the lights and trees were put in place for Christmas, while the Development Company and The Tidy Towns Group also contributed generously. Incidentally, the lights were kept lighting until the end of January thereby extending the festive season. The costs in providing Christmas Trees and Lights is considerable but also very necessary for our young folk and our own wellbeing as it certainly raises the spirits and shortens the winter. The local groups have joined forces again this year and hopefully with your help and support we can illuminate our beautiful town as in past years and complement the window displays of the various businesses. In order to do this, we have no alternative but to once again run another Go Fund Me appeal specifically for the Christmas Lights. We are very grateful to the businesses and individuals who have supported us over the years and we are now appealing once more for your support. In particular, we ask the businesses who haven’t previously supported us, to consider giving a donation towards this worthwhile cause. There is enough uncertainty about the place due to the pandemic and the lights will give the town a well-deserved lift, raising spirits, creating a positive atmosphere about the place and making Ballybunion an enjoyable place for residents and visitors alike. Please donate what you can on the following link https://www.gofundme.com/f/ballybunion-christmas-lights-appeal?utm_campaign=p_ cp+share-sheet&utm_medium=chat&utm_source=whatsApp Kind Regards and in anticipation, thanks to all, Donal Liston Chairman, Ballybunion Community Forum BALLYBUNION CHRISTMAS MARKET Ballybunions annual Christmas Market will take place this Saturday 27th November from 11am to 3pm. 35 stalls of beautiful, local food, wood work, pottery, photography, crochet, cards and so much more to inspire you for Christmas. The aim is to reduce what we throw out — unused — from the fridge, it would go some way towards less food being squandered and that is at the heart of the Food Cloud message

Brenda Moriarty left this world on Friday, November 05 having been in a nursing home for a few years before her passing. She was a very active member of the community, having been caretaker of the Sports Hall for a number of years and her big thing was keeping the village free of litter and did she do a good job on that? I assure you while Brenda was around it would be more than your life was worth to litter any part of the village! She was predeceased by her sisters Babs and Madeline, brothers Chris and John.

FINUGE GAA
On Sunday Finuge played their round one North Kerry Championship fixture with near neighbours St Senans, at home in O’Sullivan Park. On a perfect day for football at the end of November, both teams took a cagey opening approach to this game. Early scoring was slow and at the first water break the visitors led three points to no score. In quarter two Finuge came into the game scoring three on the bounce to level matters. Senans then took their turn to hit three on the bounce followed by a point from Finuge making it six points to four at halftime and anybody game. Senans seized the initiative after resumption scoring three fast points. The second water break had Senans leading 10 points to six. Play was stop/ start in the last quarter due to a number of injuries and some close dancing broke out a few times! A Finuge point made it a one score game and the lads kept hanging in as they had throughout. Finally, Senans scored the last two points and held on to win. Finuge had a number of potential goal chances, especially in the second quarter, that had they come off could have made for a different outcome! This brings to a conclusion the senior activity for 2021, thank you to everybody involved. The minors played their north kerry quarterfinal also on Sunday. Teaming up with Beale the faced the combination of Knocknagoshel/Brosna/Duagh. It was not to be their day and went down convincingly. The club has a number of tickets for sale for the Kerry GAA “Win A House in Killarney” raffle. Please contact Bridget or any of the club officers if you wish to purchase. The Finuge club wishes to express its condolences to Brian, Caroline and the McCarthy family of Ballyhorgan on their recent, sad loss.

NORTH KERRY GAA
Bernard O’Callaghan Memorial Senior Football Championship - Round 1 Report by Mairead Moriarty Brosna 2.12 V Duagh 1.09 - Saturday 20 November Ah, there’s nothing quite like the North Kerry Championship. If you’ve any North Kerry in your DNA, there’s a thrill to hitting the road on cold, rainy days
to follow your team as they battle through this rugged and gritty competition. The Duagh fans arrived to Pairc na Feile, Brosna on such a day to join a strong and vocal local support. Brosna had the better start finding their poise easily with their captain, Tom Fitzgerald getting a good point from play. They followed up quickly with a missed goal opportunity that drew an audible gasp from the Stand, as a dangerous ball just glanced wide. Duagh, when in possession, struggled to get out of their own half due to high-energy tackling and turnovers by a diligent Brosna squad. Brosna’s Jamie O’Sullivan, who started up front for Dee McAuliffe, got a lovely point from play followed by a quality point from Paul Walsh. A free for Duagh just prior to the first water break saw Martin Scannell assuredly pop the ball over to leave the sides Brosna 0 03. Duagh 0 01. Early in the second quarter, a golden pass from Brosna’s Paul Walsh intersected beautifully with Adam Barry who clinically found the net. Brosna’s Kieran O’Donnell added a cool point from play to Brosna’s score line. Duagh’s Killian Buckley showed pedigree with a great point from play with Brosna’s Tom Fitzgerald answering with another point. Just before halftime, Duagh’s Martin Scannell confidently converted another free as did Brosna’s Tom McGoldrick leaving the sides on Brosna 1 06. Duagh 0 03. The second half saw Brosna continue to dominate the game with Paul Walsh (P), Conor Lane (FP), Kieran O’Donnell (M) and Tom McGoldrick (F) getting points from a mixture of play, free and mark. In this quarter Duagh’s Killian Buckley’s lovely point would be their sole score allowing Brosna to maintain a comfortable lead at the second water break: Brosna 1 10. Duagh 0 05. As expected, Duagh found their groove in the third quarter and with a singular determination and some complacency by the homeside, they assembled a fabulous goal by Ger McCarthy and five further points from play from Tim Quirke, Seanan O’Keefe (2) and Daniel O’Donoghue (2). But Brosna countered this fluid offensive by producing a lightening Paul Walsh goal, intuitively harvested from a wayward ball off an upright and an elegant Tom McGoldrick point from play. This very sporting game was ably refereed by Ger D O’Carroll of Asdee who, in the last few minutes of the game, issued just one black card to Brosna’s no.21. Brosna Subs Introduced: Danny Moriarty, Peter Curtin, Darren Horan, Don McAuliffe. Duagh Subs Introduced: Jason Carmody, Jack Dillon, Dylan Breen. Brosna will be disappointed with the number of wides on the day. Duagh will take comfort from the wealth of promising young talent coming through their ranks. The game closed out with Brosna the deserved winners. FT Brosna 2 12. Duagh 1 09. Ballyduff 4.08 v Tarbert 1.10 Finuge 0.07 v St Senans 0.12 Moyvane 0.04 v Castleisland Desmonds 5.18 Draw for the 2021 North Kerry Championship 1/4 Finals Listowel Emmets -v- Ballyduff Brosna -v- Beale Ballydonoghue -v- St. Senans Knocknagoshel -v- Desmonds
LISTOWEL 14 -V- CORCA DHUIBHNE 10 Listowel delivered what could be considered the shock of the season in overcoming an excellent and previously unbeaten Corca Dhuibhne side, with both teams scoring 2 tries each and the excellent conversion kicking of out half Cathal Byrne helping Listowel to topple the League Leaders. This was a truly epic game, enjoyed by a great crowd, with Listowel going ahead in the first half with Jake Rochford getting onto a great pass from out half Cathal Byrne to strongly cross the whitewash and the out half coverting from a long Distance for listowel to go 7-0 ahead. The south Kerry team then put the Listowel defence under great pressure for the remainder of the half and Listowel held up very well but a well drilled Corca Dhuibhne pack impressively notched up 2 tries near the corner flags, out of range of their kicker to lead 10-7 at half time. Listowel’s character was truly tested to the limit and they stood strong as a panel, time and again with exceptional tackling and defending and some quick thinking moves, gaining field position throughout the second half, turning the tide in their favour in this very evenly matched contest. Listowel’s incessant determination led them into their opponents half in the second half and to a 5m scum. The Listowel pack dominated their bigger rivals at the set piece with Sean Mcgelligott, Cein Carey and Hooker Ryan Henderson exceptional. John Curtin and Fionn Byrne called the play and a long pass was sent to Cathal Byrne who picked it off his boot laces and shot it out to the impressive first centre Jake Rochford to steam roll his way under the posts for his second try and his 4th try in 2 weeks, converted easily by Listowel . Corca Dhuibhne came out strongly again and were driven back by superb Listowel defending keeping their line unbreakable in the second half to protect and deservedly take the victory . A superb performance by both teams with notably strong performances from Marcos Leahy stealing and constantly disrupting line outs. Cein Carey was excellent in the line out and loose with great front row work. Sean McElligott again exceptional in the scrum and more great runs in the loose is becoming a prop to be reckoned with. Fionn Byrne at scrum half with excellent, aggressive tackling and running again and cool consistent passing and driving his pack expertly. Jake Rochford with 3 great runs for 2 tries and proving to be growing into an exceptional player and John Curtin, returning from injury and leading his pack by dogged determination. Man of the match for great passing, picking a pass up at his toes to send Jake Rockford in for second match winning try and Incredible tackles driving back their big back row forwards again and again coupled with secure kicking from hand and drop outs and 2 excellent conversions, went to outhalf Cathal Byrne.

MEANING OF LIFE “In our day that used to be a sin but yirra sure there’s no such thing as sin anymore...anything goes these days.” We were tripping down memory lane, recalling our catechism that we had all through primary school with it’s colour coded questions. The questions that had a blue dot were easy to learn off, those with a red dot were a bit more difficult but the black dotted ones were seriously hard work. Now, there were two types of sin, venial and mortal. The venial was the “fat free” equivalent, the harmless sin like fibbing or stealing the butt of a pencil from someone whereas the mortal sin had you hell bound. How things have changed since those days! Now the lines between right and wrong, good and bad have become increasingly blurred. Some People even deny the existence of sin completely and blame society or upbringing or the political system for wrong behaviour. There is no sense of accountability to a higher power. However, the Word of God has something to say on this point too. In Isaiah 5:20 God says “What sorrow for those who say evil is good and good is evil, that light is dark and dark is light, that bitter is sweet and sweet is bitter.” The bible reveals that holiness is the essence of the the One True and Living God. He cannot accommodate sin because He is Holy, so sin separates us from
Him. In Isaiah again we read that “your sins have separated you from God, your sins have hidden His Face from you...” How awful that is! Especially when we are all sinners! 1 John 1:8 clearly states “if we say we have no sin ,we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.” So then what are we to do? are we completely lost? No hope? Is that it? Forever abandoned? Thankfully no! We have an incredible God who loves each and everyone of us so much that He was willing to give His Beloved Son Jesus to take all of our sins, past present and future in His body on the cross at Calvary so that we no longer need to be separated from Him. There is no point in codding ourselves. Sin is real, Evil is real. But the One True and Living God has dealt with this at the CROSS. I would be a fool not to accept Jesus as Lord and Saviour of my life and experience the peace and joy of knowing that l am no longer separated from God because of Jesus’s death on the cross. If you require any further information you can call LCF at 087 9529907. Yours sincerely Bridie (Dillon)Hartney
