MOYVANE DEVELOPMENT ASSOCIATION HOLDING SCRAP METAL COLLECTION
Moyvane Development Association will hold a scrap metal collection from Friday 10th December to Friday 17th December. Newtownsandes Coop and North Cork Coop have very kindly offered a dedicated section of their yard in Moyvane as a collection area for this scrap collection. Drop off times for scrap metal are 9am to 3pm Monday to Friday and 9am to 12 pm on Saturday. Moyvane Development Association was formed over 35 years ago to promote Community Development and the protection of the Natural Environment in order to improve and enhance the social and cultural well-being of the community. This is achieved through planning, scheduling, progressing and completing new projects, along with maintaining existing ones throughout the Village and its environs. Our most recent project is developing a community led development plan for Moyvane and Knockanure, which is getting great engagement and community backing. The process has focused on community vibrancy & village enhancement, our environment, the transition from fossil fuels, being an age friendly community, sustaining and growing our population, helping develop a thriving local economy and succession & competitiveness in agriculture. We are currently half way through this process and are getting lots of ideas for further improvements to our community facilities and services. It is great to know each and every one of us can have a say and hopefully work towards achieving our community aspirations. Financial resources will be needed to see this through and it is hoped this scrap metal collection will be a good starting point on our journey together, while also giving people the opportunity for a positive clear out. We are asking people to have a look around in their houses, back gardens & yards to pull out and bring any unwanted scrap metal to the drop off point in Newtownsandes Coop from 10th to 17th December at stated times. Anything metal is welcome but fridges, freezers, timber, plastic or tyres cannot be accepted. Batteries are also accepted but must be stored in dedicated battery storage bins at the collection point. SAN RITA WELLNESS
Welcome to San Rita Wellness weekly column… How are you?
This is a question we often ask or are asked and it can roll off the tongue very easily. It is also a question we can answer without really thinking about. Some words that may come to mind when you are answering that question could be for example.. I am great, I’m ok, I’m grand, I’m fine, I’m awful, I’m not too good, I’m hanging in there. Your answer could be from a positive answer to a negative answer, all depending on your mood and feelings at the time. Moods and Feelings can have arms and legs and can grow in different directions and also take us in different directions. “How we think determines how we feel and how we feel determines what we do“ Some of you may be feeling: In Control Routine Many of us feel more in control when we have a set routine. Whether it is with work or children going to school. Have a set bedtime ensures that we have a good nights sleep. Food Having the right foods in the house is important especially when we are conscious of making healthy choices for mealtimes . Also we are less likely to make rash decisions and choose less healthier foods. Activity Becoming more active are all important steps for a healthy lifestyle. Throughout the day be mindful of walking as much as you can. All of these steps count towards the recommended 10,000 steps a day for overall good health and wellbeing. Our San Rita Wellness ethos is when we “ Eat Well “ we “Feel Well “ and therefore we “Live Well “ Emotional Happy, Sad, Stressed, Tired. These FEELINGS can be triggers to reach for the wrong kind of foods. This can create what is known as a vicious circle and can be hard to break out of . Identifying these emotional feelings and dealing with them in a different way other than eating your way through them can have a different outcome for you at the end of the day. More Positive Positive V Negative. Many things can sway us from one to the other . The weather for example, sunny day/rainy day, restrictions or no restrictions. These are some of the things we have no control over. Focus on the things we have control over to leave you feeling more positive and getting an outcome that will benefit you for the better. Supported There are many support groups out there in all areas so nobody should ever feel that they have to do or cope with something on their own .We also find that our members in our San Rita Wellness “ In Person Meetings “ and in our weekly Zoom meetings feel that being part of a group offers them the support they need with their weight loss and wellness journey For extra support and for weekly accountability check us out on Facebook San Rita Wellness or sanritawellness.ie for details of our “ In Person Meetings “At Home Service “ or our “ One to One Service“

BALLYLONGFORD CHURCH ARRANGEMENTS Thankfully, the good news is that all restrictions in connection with attending Masses at St Michael the Archangel Church in Ballylongford and the attendance arrangements for Masses in St Mary’s Church in Asdee have been eased considerably. Clarification has now been received from the Department of the Taoiseach concerning religious services, which are as follows: - “Religious services and weddings can proceed without capacity limits but with all other protective measures remaining in place. This is a very positive measure, however it is imperative that all other Covid-19 protective measures remain in place in order to protect all members of our communities/congregations Premises should be well ventilated and hand sanitiser will be provided. Places of Worship will continue to use separate entry and exit routes and face masks must be worn. Congregations are encouraged to spread out as much as possible when attending Places of Worship and those experiencing any Covid-19 symptoms should be discouraged from attending. As the capacity of Places of Worship and numbers attending varies greatly, the onus will be on each Place of Worship and community to consider what they are comfortable with and what best suits their congregation. This will be particularly relevant for funerals/special ceremonies, with large congregations in attendance. Attendees on these occasions should not be permitted to stand in the aisles or doorways and hand shaking and the use of condolence books/sharing of Booklets etc. must be seriously avoided. Choirs or soloists performing in Places of Worship should be limited in line with the size/capacity of the venue and should adhere to 2 metre social distance from other singers, the choir master, the congregation and any other individuals in the setting (as they will not be wearing face masks during performances). BEREAVEMENT The Community has been stricken with grief and sorrow in the last week as we witnessed and are trying to come to terms with the passing of three people who were all too young to be called from this life. On Sunday evening 30th November last sadness came over the whole parish with the news of the passing of Declan Boyle R.I.P. of Kilcolman, Asdee who had passed peacefully at his residence. Declan was a very intelligent and kind man whose life was filled with music and laughter. He was a man whom people will remember for being a member of that popular musical group over the years “The One Eyed Jack’s” whose popularity all over Kerry and Limerick was of the highest regard for many years. He was a frequent visitor to the village and would be seen at shops and engaging in conversation with young and old. Declan’s remains were removed to Shannon Crematorium for private cremation on Wednesday last 1st December and his ashes were interred with his Mom and Dad in Aghavillan Cemetery Rusheen on Saturday 4th December to his family of brother Steve, nephews Jack and Joe niece Jessica, family relatives and friends we extend our deepest sympathies. On Tuesday morning 30th November last Lenamore and the Community of Ballylongford and beyond lost one of its most leading lights with the passing of P.J.Collins R.I.P. Indeed P.J’s passing was one of immense sadness and sorrow to so many that had the privilege of knowing him. His popularity and respect held by so many was truly reflected with the huge amount of people that gathered both at his repose at Lyon’s Funeral home and again at St Michael’s Church, Ballylongford for his Funeral mass and at Aghavallin Cemetery where he was laid to rest with his dear Father Ned and Mother Mai and his beloved son James. What can one say about the larger than life gentleman that has not been already echoed in the days and nights since his sad passing. Indeed everybody has their own fond remembrance of the man that was more affectionately known to so many as “The Minister”. Like so many others I have wonderful memories of the man whom I travelled and frequently enjoyed many hours in his company. While it would take reams upon reams of paper to accurately describe this wonderful man who was taken from his family and all who knew him at far too young an age, all we can say is thanks for the memories that we will cherish forever. P.J was indeed a very honest hard working man who set out in life learning his trade as a carpenter and coach builder with C.I.E. When he completed this he got into the heavy work area of Silage Contracting and on the passing of his late Dad took over the running of the family farm. In those years he worked hard and also found time for enjoyment, leisure time also became more of a work time for him as his involvement with the various groups in the community was always first class and he was never found wanting when help was required. Lenamore School where he began his education was always close to his heart and he was always at hand to help
18
out in any way for the betterment of those who came behind him. He was a founding figure in the Lenamore G.A.A. Club and indeed left no stone unturned in getting the club up and running and ensuring that it competed and was as successful as it was. His love of horses led him to be active within the Bally Race Committee and while so actively involved in the organizations just mentioned he also gave of his time and knowledge in establishing the Lenamore Rovers Soccer Club and became one of their most leading lights. I could continue for many, many more pages but the areas that I have touched on are only the tip of the Iceberg as far as this man’s valuable contribution to society is concerned. He was also the life and soul of any gathering and a good man to recite a verse or two of a song, story or joke, he was indeed a truly wonderful friend to all, and while I like so many more have many happy memories that we will forever keep as a legacy to his memory. To his family of daughters Stephanie and Rachel their mom Madeline, his sisters Eilish, Maureen and Kitty, brothers in-law, nephews, nieces and family relatives we extend our deepest sympathy may the sod in Aghavallin Cemetery rest lightly on his gentle soul and may the light of heaven shine on him. On Saturday night last December 4th news filtered through of the sudden and unexpected passing of Anne Dee of Craughdarrig, Asdee. Anne was indeed another leading light in Asdee where for over 20 years she served, as a very popular bar person at the very popular Michael Walsh’s “The Store” Anne was indeed a very understanding and caring person who always treated everybody with courtesy and respect. However, she could also give you a tongue lashing if you were in any way out of order. In recent years, she took up residence in Ballybunion and it was there at her residence that she passed from our midst. Funeral Arrangements: Reposing at Lynch’s Funeral Home, Ballylongford on this Wednesday 8th December from 5pm to 7pm sharp followed with removal to St. Mary’s Church, Asdee. Requiem Mass for Ann will take place at 11.00am on Thursday 9th followed by interment at St. John’s Cemetery, Ballybunion. HISTORIC EVENT Note in from our young and energetic local historian Tom Kennedy informing us that on next Monday 13th of December at 12 noon there will be a historic speech on the Castle Green in Ballybunion followed by some music. This is will also include a re-enactment of a historic event which will also feature a walker leaving the site of where Brian O’Grady’s house which was situated at Main Street Ballylongford at 8:30 a.m. and another person walking from the Eddie Carmody monument in Rusheen at 8:40 a.m. This is to re-enact the history in memory of the journey that some of the Ballylongford volunteers made on 13th December 1921, 100 years ago. The walk will arrive just before noon at the Castle Green in Ballybunion. On that occasion 100 years ago the Ballylongford men arrived in Ballybunion for one reason. To avenge a fallen comrade. As an R.I.C officer from Carlow Sergeant John Maher shot the last bullet that killed an unarmed Eddie Carmody who was a lieutenant with the Ballylongford volunteers in November 1920. Maher was transferred to Ballybunion as he had now become target number 1 for the Ballylongford volunteers. So on December 13th 1921 some of the Ballylongford volunteers (Patrick Cox, John Creedon, Thomas Carmody and Michael McNamara) made their way to Ballybunion by foot, they located sergeant Maher on the castle green and killed Maher, avenging their fallen comrade Eddie Carmody. After this Centenary event which will include speech and music which starts at 12 noon. Afterwards the rosary will be said at Shortis plaque at the bottom of Main Street for all the North Kerry people who fought and died for freedom. All are welcome to attend the event at the Castle Green and if you are feeling energetic you are invited to walk from Ballylongford at half 8 or join in along the way if you like from Asdee etc. Refreshments in the Railway Bar afterwards. Tarbert U13s played Listowel Emmets U13s on Saturday 13th November in this hugely successful fundraiser for Kerry Hospice / Palliative Care. Tarbert won the match on the day and it was fitting the Cup was presented to young Pa Dillon. For a number of weeks before the game, club volunteers and friends of the Dillion family fundraised throughout the community and beyond to raise a total of €9, 326. A huge thanks to the volunteers and to all those who supported such a great cause. A cheque was presented to the palliative care team on Tuesday 30th November. BEREAVEMENT Sympathy of the community is extended to Jerry Enright of Newbridge, County Kildare and formerly of Doonard Upper, Tarbert on the death of his wife. Breda Enright, née Loughlin of Standhouse, Newbridge died on Friday 26 November after a long illness. Her Requiem Mass took place at St Conleth’s Parish Church, Newbridge on Monday 29 November and burial took place in St Conleth’s Cemetery. Sympathy also to her son and four daughters and the extended Enright and Loughlin families. Her husband Jerry, now in his nineties served with the United Nations Irish Defence Forces in the former Belgian Congo in the 1960’s. Jerry is brother of Danny and Tommy, Doonard, Tarbert and Bridget in Kildare to whom sympathy is also extended. Beannacht Dé lena hanam uasal dílis. CÚRSAI EAGLAISE The impact of Covid 19 is reflected in changes in many long- standing practices and traditions. For the first time probably in the history of the parish the Sacrament of Confirmation was not administered by the Bishop of Kerry and the ceremony did not include the celebration of Mass. Fr Michael Hussey administered the Sacrament in St Mary’s Church, Tarbert on Saturday 27 November to 26 pupils now attending the Comprehensive School and on Friday 3 December he administered the Sacrament to 21 pupils attending Tarbert National School. PUBLICATIONS Comhghairdeas and well done to David Kissane, Editor and his committee on the 37th.edition of the Ballydonoghue Parish Magazine. The 2021 edition now in the shops runs to over 300 pages, all in full colour and is arguably the best annual available in terms of quality, variety and presentation. The contents include features on lifestyle, history, sports, eco matters, etc. with young and old well catered for. There is an interesting article on Andrew Carnegie and his Carnegie libraries in Kerry and Limerick. Included here is the iconic Listowel Carnegie Library built by Tarbert builder Maurice (Mossie) Holly in 1928. Another book just published is ‘As tough as Táthfhéithleann’ (woodbine) a collection of old Irish words and phrases compiled by Timmy Woulfe, Athea, former Limerick county footballer, referee and renowned step dancing teacher. Both books are available locally at Brosnan’s Daybreak and would make ideal Christmas presents. Also launched last week at St Mary’s Cathedral, Limerick was a visual history book entitled ‘Limerick - Snapshots of the Treaty City and County 1840 - 1960’. This opus is co-authored by historians Vincent Carmody, Listowel and Tom Donovan, Glin and Clarina. This is a collection of historical memorabilia with accompanying photographs and text and historic bill heads and a great social history. TARBERT GAA
U15 North Kerry Championship Final Result and Match Report: Tarbert 1-15, Moyvane 0-09. Our 15s recorded a fine victory in the North Kerry Championship final today in Ballylongford. In almost perfect conditions, Tarbert got off to a flying start and were ahead 0-07 to 0-02 at the first half water break thanks primarily to the unerring free taking from Paudie Finucane who contributed 4 points in this period. The second quarter saw Tarbert remain dominant overall as Adam Enright struck for an opportunistic goal mid-way through the quarter to put Tarbert in a very dominant position. While Moyvane did improve our boys went in at half time in a lead of Tarbert 1-09, Moyvane 0-05. On the resumption of play Moyvane grew more and more into the game but kicked 3 very bad wides at the start of the 3rd quarter which could have put them in closer contention, leaving Tarbert ahead 1-11 to 0-07 heading into the final quarter. Tarbert looked the hungrier and fitter team and this showed in the final quarter as they drove for home and won out on a score line of Tarbert 1-15, Moyvane 0-09. The cup was presented to Tarberts outstanding captain Conor Egan by the North Kerry Boards Sean Moriarty. Tarbert were dominant in most positions in the field overall today. Aaron White was faultless in goals and his kickout gave Tarbert a great platform. Dylan Kennedy and Thady Mulvihill were solid and went about their job very effectively. Shane Stack grew into the game and made a couple of telling surges up the field to spark his team into life during the game. Michael Coolahan had an immense game in the full back line and repelled multiple Moyvane attacks with an exhibition of high fielding very noticeable. Lee Moriarty was tigerish throughout and kicked two superb points from corner back today. David Mulvihill was at his usual dominant best throughout the game and held the centre back position very well, contributing an excellent point from play. At midfield Conor Egan and Shaun Wren held sway over proceedings over the 60 minutes. Conor had the task of marking one of Moyvanes key players, Darragh O Keefe, and over the 60 minutes Conor Egan came out on top in this fierce battle. Shaun Wren grew into the game and drove his team on very well, particularly in the second half when Tarbert were reduced to 14 players for a black card. In attack Lee Mulvihill did trojan work for his team throughout the game, winning breaking ball, tackling and setting up attack after attack. Paudie Finucane kicked 6 points on the day and won endless possession from the centre forward position. Paudie was Tarbert’s stand out performer on the day. Caolam Moriarty was industrious throughout at wing forward. The full forward line of Pa Dillon,

Adam Enright and Tadhg O Connell scored a total of 1-05 from play and were a constant threat for the Moyvane defence. Enright was a handful for the Moyvane full back all day. The movement and interplay of Tadhg O Connell at corner forward was outstanding, scoring 2 points from play himself and setting up 4 more scores also. Mikey Carmody, Jack Walsh and Cathal Halton performed very well when introduced in the second half. Well done to Paddy Moriarty and Joe Coolahan who have done an excellent job preparing this team all year. This victory today see’s Tarbert claim a remarkable treble winning (1) County League Div 4 (2) North Kerry League Div 1 and (3) North Kerry Championship Div 1 all in 2021. Comhghairdeas le gach duine. Panel: Aaron White, Dylan Kennedy, Shane Stack, Lee Moriarty (0-02), Michael Coolahan, David Mulvihill (0-01), Thady Mulvihill, Conor Egan, Shaun Wren, Caolam Moriarty, Paudie Finucane (0-6, 4F), Lee Mulvihill (0-01), Pa Dillon (001), Adam Enright (1-02), Tadhg O Connell (0-02), Jack Walsh, Cathal Halton, Donal Finucane, Seamus Carrig, Mikey Carmody. BIBI DILLON MEMORIAL CUP Charity Football Match in aid of Kerry Hospice / Palliative Care. Our U13s played Listowel Emmets U13s on Saturday 13th November in this hugely successful fundraiser for Kerry Hospice / Palliative Care. Tarbert won the match on the day and it was fitting the Cup was presented to young Pa Dillon. For a number of weeks before the game, club volunteers and friends of the Dillion family fundraised throughout the community and beyond to raise a total of €9, 326. LISTOWEL RUGBY
Listowel U14 Rugby Warriors March on to West Munster League Cup Semi Final! The Listowel U14 team kept their unbeaten run at home this year intact, against a hard running and well drilled Castleisland Team, with a very hard fought draw, played out in the toughest of conditions on the Cows Lawn. If there is such a thing as an entertaining 0 - 0 draw then this was certainly it. The hail , rain and wind made it very tough going for both teams, and the Listowel panel certainly got tough and played some exceptional rugby with their defensive line unbreakable again and simply unlucky not to get in to score on up to 4 occasions with some of their well worked attacks .
Results: 2021 North Kerry Championship quarter final Ballydonoghue v St Senan’s took place in Finuge on Saturday December 4th. Extra time was played and the final score was St. Senans 1-14 to Ballydonoghue 3-5. Well done and best of luck to St. Senans in the rest of the championship.
The Listowel scrum worked well and won all their own put in’s plus 2 off their opponents scrums ,with Sean Mcgelligot, Ryan Henderson and Cian Carey prominent and scrum half Fionn Byrne relentless. The line out was under pressure from Castleisland and will need to improve although Listowel stole 2 throws from their opponents in the second half .
KNOCKANURE GAA
Some notable very strong performances came from Listowel’s pack on a day not ideal for running rugby. This included Ruari O Connell, Anthony Sheehy and Jason Morriarty showing strong determined tackling and again confident and assured performances from Fionn Byrne and Cathal Byrne at half backs .

Well done to all involved. Up the Boro.
James Hunt, Sean Creighton, Darragh O Sullivan and Jake Rochford were strong in defence with just a small step over the sideline stopping Rochford from getting the winning try after a great turnover from Fionn Byrne in the last move of the match. Ewan Somers back from recent injury added great strength to the side and some excellent runs and tackling was seen again from Shea Culhane on the wing, with the player again unlucky not to get through to the line . Captain John Houlihan, showed again today his simply immense leadership, time and again driving his team forward with incredible determination and intelligence in horrific conditions. The whole panel of 25 is the backbone and strength of this team this year as with 2 regular players out injured today the consistently strong performances continued. Player of the match for great running and fantastic heart shown in constantantly tackling and disrupting the Castleisland attack went to Darragh O Sullivan, for a superb performance in the first centre position. Roll on the first league cup semi final in living memory for this listowel team of Rugby warriors, who have been drawn to take on Tralee away in the semi-final on Saturday 18th December. Listowel matchday squad: Sean McEligott, Ryan Henderson, Cian Carey, Anthony Sheehy, Ruairi O’Connell, Jason Moriarty, Ewan Somers, John Houlihan, Fionn Byrne, Cathal Byrne, Darragh O’Sullivan, Jake Rochford, Sean Creighton, Shea Culhane, James Hunt, Sean Ross, Ferdia Galvin, Aaron Moloney, Cian O’Connor, Louis Corridan, Oran Stack, Philip Brosnan.

“It’s the world we live in, you’ll have to get used to it or be left behind.” Our chat was about “modern society “ where anything and everything goes. As my friend made her pronouncement on having to move with the times l realised that indeed l don’t have to move with any times that are contrary to God’s way of living. God wants His followers to trust in Him and follow His ways. He tells us in John 14:6 “l am the Way, the Truth and the Life.“ In the book of Ephesians 5:17 Jesus, through the Apostle Paul advises us strongly, ”Therefore do not be foolish but understand what the Lord’s will is.”

Blessed Mother of the Son of God; Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succour me in my necessity (Mention your request here) There are none that can withstand your power. In the Word of God, the holy scriptures, we can clearly read that it is not God’s will for us to follow blindly all the ways of the world. In 2 Corinthians 5:17 we read “Therefore if anyone is in Christ he is a new creation, the old has gone, the new (creation) has come.” That means that if you make Jesus Lord and Saviour of your life ,you are “reborn” into God’s family, you have the right to be called a child of God. This rebirth comes from God. He makes you into a brand new creation with Him at the centre of your heart and mind. It’s astonishing. I’ve known the old creation for years but thank God l am now a new creation, a child of
God, with His Holy Spirit living inside of me 24/7 as my companion. There is nothing to compare with this new way of living. Am l saying that Christians are perfect? Mo léir! Perfect how are you!!! 1 John 1:8 says it all “if we say we have no sin we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.” But there is One who is perfect. And He died so that anyone who desires can be reborn as a new creation into His family and share in His abundance in this present life and eternal life in the future after this life ends. His Word tells us how to live “Don’t copy the behaviour and customs of this world but let God transform you into a new person by changing the way you think. Then you will know what God wants you to do and you will see how good and pleasing and perfect His will really is.” Roman’s 12:2 The truth is that “God wants everyone to be saved and come to the knowledge of the truth.” 1 Timothy 2:4. If you require any further information you can call LCF at 087 9529907. Yours sincerely, Bridie (Dillon)Hartney
