NEW BOOK ON THE HISTORY OF THE CROSBIES OF KERRY AND BEYOND

A book on the story of the Crosbies of North Kerry and beyond, ‘The Crosbies of Cork, Kerry, Laois and Leinster’ by Tarbert author Michael Christopher Keane has recently been launched.

PRES LISTOWEL TEACHER BRIAN COFFEY RECEIVES PRESIDENT’S AWARD

The Crosbies were the big landlords of Ardfert, Ballyheigue Abbeydorney and Ballylongford for around three centuries. The stories include the notoriety of William Talbot-Crosbie of Ardfert or ‘Billy the Leveller’ as he was known, the mystery surrounding the Crosbie involvement in the Danish silver robbery in Ballyheigue and the glamorous Ardfert couple, Lady Diana Sackville and John Crosbie, Earl of Glandore. The destruction of the Crosbies’ two big Kerry mansions, Ballyheigue Castle and Ardfert Abbey, during the War of Independence and the Civil War is also discussed in detail. This is Keane’s third book. His first book, ‘From Laois to Kerry’ (2016), tells the story of the forced transplantation to North Kerry of the Laois Septs, Moores, Kellys, Lawlors, Dowlings, Dees, etc. and the continuing presence of their descendants in the county. His second book ‘The Earls of Castlehaven’ (2018) tells the story of the exotic in-laws of the Crosbies, one of whom, the 2nd Earl of Castlehaven, was sensationally executed for crimes of sexual depravity. Presentation Secondary School Listowel received very good news this week as Principal Katherina Broderick announced that Mr Brian Coffey, teacher at the school received a Civic Merit Award from President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins. Mr Coffey received the Gaisce Leader President’s Award for his commitment to voluntary service in supporting young people in Pres Listowel through their Gaisce Award challenges for over 5 years. Over a quarter of a million Gaisce Awards have been achieved since Gaisce was launched in 1985 as a national youth award and is the ‘highest recognition of a young person’s initiative, achievement and voluntary contribution’. Mr Coffey was credited for his role in supporting, encouraging and believing in the students of Presentation Listowel and their potential to be the best version of themselves. The award Mr Coffey received recognises that he is a leader who acts a trusted mentor and has had immeasurable success in leading the programme in the school over the years. The award was presented to Mr Coffey recently by Ms Broderick who said ‘it was an honour to make the presentation and acknowledge the support, encouragement and commitment, which Mr Coffey has shown in leading the Gaisce programme in the school. Mr Coffey is acknowledged for the effort he makes to afford students the opportunity to achieve and learn about themselves while they complete the Gaisce challenge’.

LISTOWEL WRITERS’ WEEK ANNOUNCE PRIZE INCREASE FOR NOVEL OF THE YEAR

Listowel Writers’ Week announce an increase to €20,000 for the winner of the Kerry Group Irish Novel of the Year Award 2022. Listowel Writers’ Week is absolutely delighted that Kerry Group has significantly increased the prize fund. It is wonderful news for Irish novelists. This award is for the best Novel by an Irish author published between 1st February 2021 and 1st February 2022. Submissions are now being invited for the 2022 award. The adjudicators for this year’s Award are: Award-winning journalist Manveen Rana and Award-winning British writer Rachel Joyce. Catherine Keogh, Chief Corporate Affairs and Brand Officer, Kerry Group commented “Kerry Group is proud to encourage and reward brilliance in Ireland’s writers through this partnership with Listowel Writers’ Week Literary Award. PIGOTT POETRY PRIZE ANNOUNCES 2022 COMPETITION

The Annual Pigott Poetry Prize, presented at Listowel Writers’ Week, is in its 9th year and is awarded for the best book of new poetry by an Irish poet published between 1st February 2021 and 1st February 2022. The winner will receive the country’s largest prize of €12,000 and the two shortlisted finalists each receive €1,000. Closing date for receipt of collections is Tuesday 1st February 2022. The Prize is sponsored by Philanthropist Mark Pigott KBE & Family who shared, “It is a blessing to be able to support this wonderful literary award and recognise the leading poets of Ireland and showcase the beauty, diversity and strength of Irish Poetry.” This year’s adjudicators are UK Poets Maura Dooley & Mark Waldron. A shortlist of three poetry books will be revealed in March 2022 and the winner will be announced at the Opening Ceremony of Listowel Writers’ Week on the 1st June 2022. Festival Chairperson, Catherine Moylan commented, “The Pigott Poetry prize is one of Ireland’s most significant poetry prizes. MAYOR OF KERRY CLLR. JIMMY MOLONEY WELCOMES €910,000 FUNDING FOR LISTOWEL

Mayor of Kerry Cllr. Jimmy Moloney has welcomed the announcement of €910,000 in Rural Regeneration and Development Funding (RRDF) for Listowel as 1 of 27 projects nationally that were announced. The Listowel project seeks to reposition The Square as central economic hub of the town. Funding will be targeted the at the renewal of the Town Square, provision of a tourism, cultural and heritage hub, repurposing of underused spaces in the town centre as enterprise spaces and connection of the North Kerry Greenway with the town centre. Kerry County Council will commit almost €180,000 from own resources to this phase of the plan. This funding is possible as a result of monies raised from the Local Property Tax.

PRESENTATION SECONDARY SCHOOL LISTOWEL – WINNERS IN MTU SUSTAINABLE PRODUCT DESIGN COMPETITION

Third Year students from Presentation Secondary School, Listowel, claimed first prize in ‘BIOBODY’, a sustainable body product design competition in conjunction with Science Foundation Ireland and The Circular Bioeconomy Research Group (CIRCBIO) at Munster Technological University (MTU). The winning team members Eimear Buckley, Noelle Dillon, Meabh Kennelly and Katie Trant were presented with their award by Ms Eve Savage, MTU Programme Manager. At the award presentation Eve noted that each of the entries from Presentation Listowel were very impressive and that the winning submission from Eimer, Noelle, Meabh & Katie which they entitled ‘Urtica Rubi’ was exceptional! All participants were presented with certificates from MTU on the day. The ‘BIOBODY’ project encourages students to engage in an interactive design sprint, working in teams, they create new biobased product ranges for the personal care industry. Students learn about the bioeconomy and the European funded associated projects. The programme focuses on the use of biobased ingredients, technologies and packaging solutions and the myriad of career opportunities that the bioeconomy presents. Students also develop transversal skills such as teamwork, creativity, and communication with the support of engaging presentations and design tools delivered by the CIRBIO team. Students in the school have performed very well in similar workshops with MTU in recent years as the initiative was initially introduced into the school as part of the Transition Year programme and is now an integral part the school extracurricular calendar. Ms Norma Dowling, lead teacher for the programme in Pres. Listowel said ‘students found the experience both interesting and enjoyable and that it provided them with great inspiration for their own product. It helped them understand the bioeconomy and to see the advantages of the circular economy. They felt that it was a revelation to learn how they could use everyday nature, that is all around them, to provide a product that will not harm nature or increase climate change, an issue that is especially important for all involved’. Happy new year to all our readers. At this stage Christmas is well and truly over ..or is it? It’s well proven that it can take a while for people to get back into the healthy habits. This year especially we are hearing of many people who are holding on to Christmas a little bit longer by not taking down the Christmas tree etc to help keep them motivated and in good spirits. That’s all well and good if it works for the right reasons, but it may have other implications also. For example, it may influence your food choices, your ability in being more active etc. So if you want to make a fresh start and want to see and feel better, it’s important to maybe shift your mindset in a way that will motivate you in developing a healthier lifestyle. Over the years we have seen a lot of our San Rita Wellness members losing weight for many different reasons like an occasion coming up such as a wedding, communion, confirmation or a holiday. However in the times we are all now going through these kind of things are unlikely to happen or more uncertain to happen. So now it’s time to shift our mindset, and focus on how making lifestyle changes can benefit us in other ways such as better health and wellbeing, which can lead to long term sustainable weight loss. Watching shows like Operation Transformation and following our San Rita Wellness plan both have common messages about the value of good health and wellbeing. Being guided how to eat healthier, being more active and keeping ourselves in a positive headspace are key to building lifelong helpful habits. EAT HEALTHY: Whether its 3 main meals or 5 smaller meals it doesn’t matter once you feel satisfied and getting a healthy nutritional balance. When we talk about healthy nutritional balance it’s all about not having too much of one thing and not enough of the other. Breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day as by skipping breakfast has it’s implications eg. feeling weak, poor concentration and the impulse to pick for the rest of the day. Lunches can get boring if you keep having the same old thing, but as it’s the meal that has to carry you until dinner time we would encourage you to include carbs to help you feel fuller for longer. Dinner is probably one of the easiest meals to get in variety such as Carbs, veg and protein. The golden rule is your plate should mentally be divided in 3 ie. 1/2 veg,1/4 carb and 1/4 protein. BEING ACTIVE: We all know we should be active but that can sometimes be easier said than done. Doing something you enjoy rather than doing something you think you “should” be doing is the key to sticking with physical activity. WELL BEING: What we think determines how we feel and how we feel determines what we do! It’s important that we make time out of our day for ourselves and do something that we will benefit from. Many of you may have a lot going on at home now between working online or/ and home schooling so setting aside 20 minutes or so to do something nice is important for your wellbeing. So, all in all losing weight for an occasion may have worked in the past, but if we want to look good, be healthy and live longer we need to eat healthy, be active and take care of our wellbeing. BALLYDUFF GAA LOTTO DRAW The Ballyduff GAA Club weekly Lotto draw for Tuesday January 4th was postponed due to Covid 19. The Lotto Jackpot stood at €12,600 and was carried over to the following week’s draw. The Lotto Draw takes place each Tuesday night at the GAA Clubrooms and tickets cost €2.50 each, with a minimum play of €5, and you must pick three numbers from 1 – 28 and a Bonus number from 1 – 10. The Jackpot starts at €10,000 and there is €100 added to it weekly if not won. There is a weekly Match 3 prize of €400 for anyone that matches the first 3 numbers without the bonus number. COISTE NA NÓG Ballyduff GAA has signed up to the MyLife/ GAA Every Step Counts Challenge in support of Ireland Lights Up 2022. Almost 400 clubs have registered to date and the aim is to get people active and walking for 5 weeks from Wednesday 19th January to midnight on 23rd February 2022. The aim is to walk the combined equivalent of a 4000km trip around Ireland. All clubs that pass the 4000km target will be entered into a draw to win an O’Neill’s voucher. BALLYDUFF GAA NEWS Richard (Richie) McCarthy R.I.P: Sympathy is extended to the family of Richie McCarthy of Killeen, Tralee and late of Ballyduff who died during the week. Richie won seven County Senior Hurling Championship medals with his native Ballyduff. The first of these came in the breakthrough year of 1955, after a wait of 64 years, and subsequently in 1957,1959,1960,1961, when he captained the team and in 1965 & 1966. In 1968 he transferred to Austin Stacks in Tralee whom he helped to two County Senior Hurling Championship Finals in 1968 and 1969 but unfortunately they were defeated in both. Richie is survived by his wife Helen, son Richie, daughters Linda and Ruth, sisters Nance and Maud. May his gentle soul Rest In Peace. Kerry Hurling: Eoin Ross and Darragh Slattery were our representatives on the Kerry Hurling team that made history by defeating Tipperary at Austin Stack Park on Saturday last in the Coop sponsored Munster Hurling League. Kerry are in action again at the weekend when they meet All Ireland Champions, Limerick, at the Gaelic Grounds on Friday night. They had only 14 on duty for the semi-final and I don’t think it has ever happened in any sport that their team sheet in an All-Ireland Final would just contain 15 names and no subs! It is probably a stat that will never be repeated but it shows the character and togetherness of these fifteen warriors along with Liz Houlihan who was with the Fab 15 all the way and could well have given birth on a Camogie sideline, but we wish Liz all the best when the baby arrives next month. DEATHS The death took place of Elizabeth (Lila) Kissane, née Mackessy of St Patrick’s Terrace, Tarbert and formerly of Tarmons, Tarbert. Lila died on New Year’s Eve, 31 December 2021 after a short stay in University Hospital, Kerry. Sadly she was the third member of the Mackessy family to die in 2021, her sister Mary in New York and brother Con in Tarmons, both passing to their eternal reward in the same week of July. Her Requiem Mass took place in St Mary’s Church, Tarbert on Monday 3 January and was celebrated by Fr John O’Connor, assisted by Fr Philip O’Connell, both of Tarbert. Fr John spoke of the great crosses she had borne in her life with great faith and fortitude- the death of her two young sons, Michael and Joseph, the death of her husband Johnny, and her own medical trauma. Her grand-daughter Celine Dee spoke of the six great interests in her long life of 94 years as symbolised in the gifts brough to the altar - her love of prayer and the Rosary, cooking and baking, country and western music, bingo and the lotto, working in the bog and the outdoors, beauty and fashion with a great grá for lipstick and eyeliner. Lila, born in January 1927, was one of 12 children, 7 boys and 5 girls born to Thady and Mary Mackessy of Tarmons West. She married next door neighbour Johnny Kissane and they moved to London with Johnny working in the building industry. Later they returned to Tarbert where Johnny had permanent work with local building contractor, Jack O’Connor. They lived at 13 St Patrick’s Terrace, Tarbert which became their permanent home where they reared their family. Sadly two of her sons died young and her husband Johnny died in 2002 aged 79. There was a large congregation at the removal of her remains from her home to the Church and again as the funeral cortege left for Kilnaughtin Cemetery. At her own request, cantor Tomás Coolahan sang ‘Maria Concepta’ as she was laid to rest beside her late husband and sons. Leaba i measc na naoimh agus na n-aingeal go raibh aicí. Lila was predeceased by her sisters Mary and Helen, brothers Paddy, Timmy, Johnny, Joe and Connie. Sympathy of the community is extended to her sons Tim and John, daughters Mim, Margaret and Elizabeth, sisters Kitty in Birmingham, Noreen in New York, brothers Jim in New York and Tom in London, extended family, neighbours, relatives and friends. Sadly the news broke of the sudden death of Claire Kiely, Holywell, Dundrum, Dublin. Claire who was aged 56 died after a short illness on Thursday 6 January, surrounded by her family. She was the wife of Dan Kiely, Holywell, Dundrum and formerly of Tieraclea, Tarbert. Dan is the eldest of five boys born to Pete and Joan Kiely, Tieraclea. Her Requiem Mass took place in the Church of the Holy Rosary, Dundrum followed by Cremation at Mount Jerome. Sympathy of the community is extended to her husband Dan, children Jennifer, Rachel and Jack to her parents-in-law Pete and Joan Kiely and the extended Kiely family. WEDDING BELLS The wedding took place of Patrick Mulvihill, son of the late Timothy and Bridie Mulvihill, St Patrick’s Terrace, Tarbert and Louise Bowdren, daughter of the late Pauline McParling, Cork. The couple were married on 21 December 2021 in a Civil Ceremony at the Ballyseede Castle Hotel, Tralee. Best Man was Even Mulvihill and Cian Mulvihill was Groomsman. This funding will help defray cost of supply and erection of Christmas street lighting and additional lighting for next year. BLIAIN DÁR SAOL The year 2021 was like 2020 again dominated by the Covid 19 Pandemic on press, radio and television. The Delta virus was superseded by the more transmissible Omicron virus at the latter end of the year. In 2021 Level 5 Lockdown continued into January which meant that public celebration of Mass was not permitted and in Tarbert all four weekly Masses were celebrated on line. Monday 1st March saw a return to mainstream schooling of Junior classes in Tarbert National School and Leaving Cert students in the Comprehensive School. On 15 March 3rd.4th,5th and 6th Classes returned to the National School and 5th. Year students to the Comprehensive School. Dr Lehane and his medical staff continued to administer First and Second Vaccines to his patients.. 26 April, the number of mourners allowed to attend a funeral was increased from 10 to 25. On the10 May, St Mary’s Church was open to the public for Mass celebration with permitted maximum capacity of 50 attendees. Bridewell Visitor reopened and for the first time people were allowed travel outside the county. On 20 May Kerry County Council awarded the contract for building 22 local authority houses to Parkway construction, Tralee with estimated completion date of August 2022. On 2 June the Swanky Bar and Coolahan’s Bar which had been in lockdown since 15 March re-opened providing outdoor service only to comply with Covid regulations. 5 July Carmody’s Bar re-opened providing indoor service. In June filming commenced in Tarbert Island on the new Olivia Coleman film ‘Joyride’, a welcome diversion. June saw positive news for the Shannon Estuary with the US company New Fortress Energy applying to an Bórd Pleanála for a planning permit to locate an LNG terminal and Data centre in the region with potential fulltime employment of 400 jobs. This application was supported by Tarbert Development Association and local business interests In North Kerry. In the 2021 Tidy Towns Competition, Tarbert came second in Category B population in Kerry. Sadly, 2021 saw the passing of 26 parishioners, 11 parishioners died in Tarbert and Kerry, 4 died elsewhere in Ireland, 5 died in England, 5 died in the USA and 1 died in Australia. On a positive note, 8 Weddings took place with 8 parishioners saying ‘I do ‘. Fan slán.!

Should I know you?” I move away from someone and I feel like saying “I’m sorry, I have nothing against you but.... This thing is totally alien to us. The old saying that says “It takes a village to raise a child” seems to have been knocked on its head but it still does need a village, more than ever. We are all in this together, we need each other more than we ever did before. It’s amazing what changes it has brought about. The big multinational companies and even the smaller companies now sing off the same hymn sheet. They thought they needed big offices in big expensive buildings to run their businesses but now they know that’s not the way it is. All you need is technology, so the people who invested in commercial properties have learned an expensive lesson! Apart from those who need to be at work physically, everyone else can work from home.....if they have decent broadband. Government, take note. It has not been easy for any generation,

Ballydonoghue GAA Club in partnership with Lisselton & Coolard Schools sent Christmas Cards to the senior parishioners and also to people from the parish currently in Hospital or residing in Nursing Homes. The pupils wrote lovely letters and did great art work to accompany their greetings in the hope that the recipients would get some joy in these testing times. The GAA Club supported the Kerry Hospice Foundation by buying the cards directly from The Palliative Care Unit Tralee.

FINUGE GAA LAUNCH THEIR CAR RAFFLE Finuge GAA club in association with Divanes Castleisland have launched a car raffle to help raise funds for the club. The monies raised will go towards the development of a dedicated juvenile training and playing pitch, upgrade to the existing lights and general improvements around the grounds. Finuge is a small club in the heart of north Kerry, serving the communities of Finuge, Lixnaw and the surrounding townlands. The club grounds regularly host north Kerry games across all the ages and grades, school’s games and district games. The funds being raised will help secure these facilities for future generations to come. Tickets are priced at €25 each and are available from local businesses and online, with the draw taking place Easter Sunday. Our lips cannot speak how I loved him, my heart cannot tell how I miss him in our home that is so lonely today. So rest in peace dear loved one and thanks for all you have done for me. THE MIRACLE PRAYER

Jesus Christ, the Beloved Son of the One, True and Living God has done absolutely everything so that we would want close contact with Him. He left the glory of Heaven, He became flesh, He allowed Himself to be beaten, abused and crucified on a Roman cross. He died the death of a criminal. Why? So that you and l may reap the benefits resulting from close contact with Him and His substitutory death for each of us on the cross of Calvary. By nurturing close contact with God, Jesus and Holy Spirit we avail of incredible blessings and benefits. We have peace that is beyond human understanding and joy in the midst of chaos. Further we read in the Gospel of John 1:12 “But to all who believed him and accepted him, he gave the right to become children of God.” There is

no end to the blessings. In the first Epistle of John 5:11 we read “And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son.” But the choice is ours. In Revelation 3:20 Jesus, the Son of God speaks to us and says “Behold l stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My Voice and opens the door, l will come in to him and dine with him and he with Me.” What an invitation!!! In Roman’s 8:31 we read “If God is for us who can be against us?” He assures us in Joshua 1:9 “Have l not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage, do not be afraid nor be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.” It’s 2022, the world is in tumult and Omicron is raging. Uncertainty is everywhere. But we can be absolutely sure of one thing. God is still God. He is in charge of everything in Heaven and on earth and under the earth. Without Him we are lost. My prayer for each of us at the threshold of this new year is to be a close contact of Him. May you all have a Blessed and Happy New Year.
