A planning application has been submitted to Kerry County Council to erect seven 170 metre high wind turbines on Ballinagare Bog between Lixnaw and Ballyduff villages. The turbines will be approximately 6 times the height of the Rattoo Round Tower. This will impact on the habitat of the local wildlife: the whooper swans that overwinter there every year, hen harrier, curlews and the possibility of pollution of the salmon rivers Brick and Feale. Environmentalists state that the preservation of peatlands and boglands and their sequestration of carbon is an important contribution to prevent climate change Kerry already provides nearly 20% of all wind energy produced in Ireland while having only 3% of the population. Objections to this application must be submitted to Kerry Council by 26th January, accompanied by a fee of €20, quoting planning number 211441 We can be contacted via our facebook page ‘Stop the Ballinagare Windfarm’ or by email at ballinagareeenviromental@gmail.com. We would appreciate your support to prevent this development.

RECOVERY HAVEN KERRY INVITES NEW MEMBERS TO WOMEN’S CANCER SUPPORT GROUP

Cancer support charity, Recovery Haven Kerry, is reaching out to women experiencing cancer to join their dedicated cancer support group. Facilitated by counsellor Kay Lynch, the free online group meetings offer a safe and friendly space for women experiencing cancer to explore issues affecting them, while also offering and gaining support from other women on their cancer journey. Whether you want to share your own personal story or simply sit and listen to what is being discussed, the fortnightly group has proven to be a huge source of support and comfort to women dealing with cancer. Recovery Haven Kerry deputy manager, Katie O’Donoghue, explained that the group offers a safe place for women to avail of vital peer support from other women who are experiencing cancer and who have a deeper understanding of the issues women are going through. “The group is open to all women who have had a cancer diagnosis, no matter what stage of their journey they are on,” Katie explained. “Some women don’t feel that they need or want counselling, so the real value of the group setting is the peer support and forming bonds with other women and exchanging experiences, ideas and advice on handling the challenges they face. It’s all about being with people with similar experiences and who have a deeper understanding of what you are going through.” The group meets fortnightly, with the next meeting taking place via Zoom on Friday, January 21st at 11am. If you feel you would benefit from this group meeting, please contact Recovery Haven Kerry on 066 7192122 to join the next or subsequent meeting. CAROLINE’S DÓTERRA ESSENTIAL OILS CAROLINE’S POD OF POSITIVITY Welcome to our weekly column and our pod of positivity. It is here you will find little tips and tools that help us to maintain a life of health, wellness, love, and gratitude as well as all the information on dóTerra’s powerful essential oils. Now that we are well into January I hope you have set yourself goals and plans for the month or year ahead and remain positive and stay focused on them. Reminding ourselves it is important to take things slow while doing our day-to-day activities and always with kindness, love and positive thinking. As an advocate for dóTerra essential oils I know how the oils can support the Body, the Mind, and the Mood and looking at dóTerra’s Lavender, Peppermint and Lemon we see how when used consistently in the mornings and throughout the day they can gave us focus and motivation. Our younger people are doing fantastic work in both school and home and diffusing all three of the above DōTerra oils provides the additional motivation, alertness, and an increase in focus, as well as invoking feelings of encouragement and well-being to their bodies. Each of the three oils have many other uses and using them in conjunction with one another, and taken in a small amount of water, acts as a natural antihistamine to the body. DóTerra’s Lavender can provide feelings of comfort and calm when one feels anxious, stressed, or upset. It is the hero oil to our emotions, and in our house, its an oil that is diffused right before bedtime, and sprayed gently on the pillows and bed linen. These oils can be used in three different ways: Topically – applying them on to our skin with or without a carrier oil. Aromatically – by placing a two to three drops into a cold-water diffuser and diffusing these oils in our homes, classrooms, offices, salons or places of work and business. And the third way, internally – by adding them to your favourite food, waters or drinks, or simply by taking one drop under the tongue daily. The oils are a natural solution to care for our needs and our Family’s health needs and they can support us in many of the following that we experience from time to time, such as: Anxiety Issues, Digestive Support, Sleep Assist, Muscle Care, Stress Buster, Depression, Grief, Energy Boost, Skin Support, Immunity Boost, Allergy Assist and so much more. So, with the weekend approaching, I encourage you to incorporate that positive vibe into your life and home, keep the journaling going that many of us have started as a goal for 2022 and remember to take things nice and easy, and lean into using your dóTerra essential oils. For extra positivity and well-being, check out our Facebook page where we have information and live videos on all of dóTerra’s essential oils, and Caroline’s Fashion Fix will take place live every Friday on our private Facebook group page showcasing gorgeous French fashion from Caption Tortue. Until next time, I leave you with our thought for the week, ‘You can’t pour from an empty cup, so take care of yourself first’. Caroline X Tel: 087 292 1292

IRISH WATER APPEAL TO HOMES AND BUSINESSES TO TAKE STEPS TO PREPARE FOR FREEZING WEATHER AND TO CONSERVE WATER

Irish Water and Local Authorities are asking homes and businesses to take some simple steps to avoid damage to their pipes and help conserve water during the cold weather. Freezing conditions can lead to a higher than normal volume of burst pipes. A burst pipe can cause severe damage in the home, while also leading to valuable water being lost. Sometimes a small leak can go undetected for weeks, resulting in expensive repair bills and a disrupted water supply. To avoid this, we are asking home- and business-owners to take some simple steps to winter-proof their premises over the coming months. Speaking about preparing for colder weather, Tom Cuddy, Head of Operations, Irish Water, said, “With temperatures often dipping below zero at this time of year, we are appealing to homes, businesses and those responsible for unoccupied buildings to check for leaks whilst adhering to current public health regulations and advice, and to turn off water where it’s not needed. We are also appealing to customers to check outside pipes in particular that can become frozen and burst during periods of cold weather and report leaks they see on the public network to us. “Small efforts by everyone to conserve water wherever possible make a big difference and we would ask the public to only use what they need whilst continuing to adhere to public health advice on hand washing and hygiene regarding COVID-19. Simple advice on conservation includes for example taking showers over baths and fixing dripping taps where it is possible to do so. “In preparing for freezing weather, there are some simple steps to follow to avoid your pipes freezing or bursting. These can be viewed online at https://www.water.ie/help/supply/winterproofing/ or below What to do if you have a frozen pipe: If you have a basic knowledge of plumbing, these tips will help you locate and thaw a frozen pipe. If you are unsure of what to do, call a registered plumber. Turn off the water supply, this will limit the amount of leakage or damage if a pipe bursts: • Find and turn off your inside stop valve, usually located under the kitchen sink • Turn off the stopcock in your cold water tank, usually located in the attic Locate the pipe • Check the water pressure in appliances such as taps and toilets to see if it is lower than usual • Locate the general area where you think there may be a frozen pipe • Check for visible pipes that are not insulated, pipes that feel much colder than others, have nearby draughts or damage • Turn on nearby cold taps to relieve pressure on the frozen pipe. NEVER turn on the hot taps Thaw the pipe • If the pipe and fittings are not cracked or broken, you can try gently thawing the pipe • Protect or move anything which might be damaged if the pipe bursts when thawed • Use a hairdryer on the lowest setting to gently warm the pipe, starting at the end nearest the tap NEVER attempt to thaw out frozen pipes by switching on your immersion, central heating, blow torch etc. What to do if you have a burst pipe: A burst pipe can cause serious damage to your home so it is important to take action as soon as possible. Limit the damage • Turn off the water supply as instructed above • Drain the system by turning on all the cold water taps and flushing the toilets • Switch off the central heating and immersion. If you use solid fuel, let it die out • When the water heating is completely off, turn on the hot taps to further drain the system • If water from a burst pipe is leaking near any sockets, switches or appliances, switch off the mains if it is safe to do so. If the switch is wet, do not touch it, instead call a qualified electrician • If you have a shared water supply e.g. if you live in an apartment complex, ensure you have access to the stop cock. This is usually located where the water supply enters the building • Check with your neighbours that turning off the water has not affected their supply Get it repaired • You can make a temporary repair to a burst pipe by binding it tightly with a cloth or tape. • Replace this as soon as possible by a permanent repair, carried out by a qualified and registered plumber. • Ensure your hot water system is refilled BEFORE you switch back on your immersion or boiler. Visit our Winter Proofing for Home page for tips. Irish Water continues to work at this time, with our Local Authority partners, contractors and others to safeguard the health and well-being of both staff and the public and to ensure the continuity of critical drinking water and wastewater services and would like to remind the public to continue to follow public health advice on hand-washing and hygiene during the global health pandemic. To report a leak please contact Irish Water on 1800 278 278.

SAN RITA WELLNESS

Welcome to San Rita Wellness weekly column… Welcome to San Rita Wellness weekly column

Do you feel that every day is the same still or do you think that things are beginning to look a little bit different now with the upcoming easing of restrictions. Imagine if everybody was the same, for example looked the same, ate the same food, enjoyed the same music , walked the same way, talked the same and dressed the same, wouldn’t life be very boring. So let’s look at things from a different angle: Different Lifestyles… Young mums or dads at home with children, full or part time workers, office or manual workers, people who work away from home and people who work from home, retired people ... No matter which of the above you slot into, these are different types of lifestyles but yet we may all be aiming to achieve the same outcome . Our ethos at San Rita Wellness is the following : “Eat Well, Feel Well, Live Well” Different food preferences or requirements… On our San Rita Wellness plan no food is off limits so whether you are vegetarian, vegan, faddy eater, plain eater or gluten intolerant you can still eat healthily and enjoy the foods you love while still feeling in control. Remember you have the freedom to choose your foods your way once it all fits into your calorie allowance. Different exercise needs and choices… Active or inactive, sporty people, people who hate exercise, younger people, older people, again we are all different and move at a different pace . But at the end of the day it is important that we enjoy what we do but we all want the same result which is to feel healthier and fitter. Different ways of losing weight… New to losing weight, seasoned dieters, people who like rules and structure, people who want maximum flexibility, whichever you are, our San Rita Wellness plan will suit you. We know we all lose weight differently and at a different pace but the thing to remember is once it’s working for you “ It’s Working “ Different weight loss challenges… We all face different challenges but you are not alone. A challenge sometimes needs to be challenged, whether that means learning to cook simple dishes, breaking down your weight loss goals , give suggestions to the person preparing your meal, or planning ahead for your upcoming social occasions.. Different expectations Thinking it will be easy, not believing you can do it, happy to lose weight steadily or want results fast. Again we all have different expectations but we also have to be realistic. Weight loss and Wellness happen over time by being patient with yourself ,believing in yourself and understanding that if you were to continue doing the same thing all the time , you will always get the same result. VIOLETA

By Isabel Allende THE NEW NOVEL FROM LITERARY LEGEND ISABEL ALLENDE ‘Epic, beautifully crafted . . . Gripping from start to finish’ DAILY TELEGRAPH One extraordinary woman. One hundred years of history. One unforgettable story. Violeta comes into the world on a stormy day in 1920, the first daughter in a family of five boisterous sons. From the start, her life is marked by extraordinary events, for the ripples of the Great War are still being felt, even as the Spanish flu arrives on the shores of her South American homeland almost at the moment of her birth. Through her father’s prescience, the family will come through that crisis unscathed, only to face a new one as the Great Depression transforms the genteel city life she has known. Her family loses all and is forced to retreat to a wild and beautiful but remote part of the country. There, she will come of age, and her first suitor will come calling. In a letter to someone she loves above all others, Violeta recounts devastating heartbreak and passionate affairs, times of both poverty and wealth, terrible loss and immense joy, and a life shaped by some of the most important events of history: the fight for women’s rights, the rise and fall of tyrants and, ultimately, not one but two pandemics. Through the eyes of a woman whose unforgettable passion, determination, and sense of humour will carry her through a lifetime of upheaval, Isabel Allende once more brings us an epic that is both fiercely inspiring and deeply emotional.

Crotta After victories over Abbeydorney and Ardfert will go into the final full of confidence, and the Tralee Parnells side with wins over Ballyduff and Ballyheigue will be equally confident of victory. We wish the best of luck to the Crotta players and their management. Be sure to come out and support the lads in what should be a cracking game. CROTTA GAA Kerry Senior hurlers were defeated by the All-Ireland champions, Limerick in the Co-Op Superstores Munster Hurling Cup Semi Final on Sunday 16th January in the TUS Gaelic Grounds by Limerick: 4 - 29 to Kerry: 0 – 11. The Crotta club was represented by Sean Weir (CornerBack) Shane Nolan (Captain) (Mid Field) (0-01) and James Sheehan came on as a sub. We wish Kilmoyley and their backroom team the best of the luck in the AIB All-Ireland Intermediate Club Hurling Championship / Craobh Idirmheánach Iomána Clubanna na hÉireann AIB Semi-Final Kilmoyley (Kerry) v Banagher (Derry) at Connacht G.A.A. Centre of Excellence, Bekan, Co. Mayo, at 2.00pm on Sunday, 23 January Tralee CBS 4-13 Clonakilty CC 1-8 A dominant second half display by Tralee CBS saw them book their place in the last four of the TUS Corn Uí Mhuirí U19 A championship dispatching Clonakilty Community College in clinical fashion at Lewis Road on Saturday afternoon 15th January. The defending champions who led from gun to tape fired in three second half goals to put the contest beyond doubt having to endure a sticky patch in the opening half in which the west Cork outfit hit five points without a reply to cut an early seven-point lead back to just two by the 26th minute. The Tralee side galloped into an early run away lead helped by an 11th minute Donnacha Sayers goal. The Crotta Club was represented on the Tralee CBS Team by Donnacha Sayers (Full forward) (1-00) and Sean McGrath (001) and Gavin Parker both came on as subs. Tralee CBS move forward to face Skibbereen C.S in the semi-final. The Sem, Killarney play Bandon Hamilton High School in the other Semi Final Great win by Causeway CS on Saturday 15th January in Ballinora, Co Cork in the quarter final of the Munster Senior hurling Colleges competition. After a slow start our lads really turned on the style in the final quarter. Causeway were 11 points down at the first water break, however 1-4 in the second quarter reduced the gap to 6 pts at half time. To leave the score Causeway 1-4 Bishopstown 1-10. The third quarter was a tight affair and both teams traded some excellent scores. The score at the final water break was Causeway 1-9 Bishopstown 1-15. The final quarter was to be a game changer. Causeway outscored their opponents 3-7 to 3 points to run out winners by 7 points and book their place in the Munster semi-final in a few weeks’ time. Massive congratulations to all the players who never gave up and showed great composure throughout and pulled off a great win coming back from 11 points down to win by 7 points. The Crotta Hurling Club was represented by Rory Mahony (002) at Center Forward Causeway CS 4-16 -v- Bishopstown 1-18 CAMOGIE There was no rest for the ladies as they played Clooney Quinn Co. Clare, in the Munster Junior Club Semi Final 2021 on Saturday 15th January at the John Mitchels GAA Grounds and after magnificent display Clanmaurice bounce back to reach another final on the final score line of Clanmaurice 4-12 Clooney Quin (Clare) 1-8 Clanmaurice does not believe in following scripts. The narrative

18

was that six days after the pain of losing the 2020 All-Ireland Junior Club Final to Raharney by three points, they would not be able to raise their game against a young and fresh Clooney Quin side. Well, nobody told the Clanmaurice girls that and from the outset they dominated this contest and there was never a moment when anything other than a Clanmaurice victory was going to be the outcome at the John Mitchels GAA Grounds on Saturday last. While their semi-final win over Athleague with only fourteen players in December made national headlines, their incredible spirit and will to win against the odds, goes slightly under the radar locally, the question has to be asked, is there any men’s team in the county that could contest three All-Ireland Finals in a row (five if you count replays) and after beating Clooney Quin on Saturday, they will now try for five in row Munster Junior titles on Sunday next in Mallow against An Rinn from Waterford with 18 players at most! Congrats to the Clanmaurice team and their backroom team, especially the Crotta players Player of the Game: Aoife Behan (Wing Back) and Jackie Hogan Full forward (1-7, 3fs) We wish the players and the management the best of luck. WEATHER GIRL Best wishes to Jean Byrne who took early retirement as weather forecaster with Met Eireann. Jean presented weather forecasts on RTE for more than twenty years. Jean was born in Tarbert to the late John and Lola Byrne. She attended Tarbert National School and later completed her Secondary education as a boarder in Tuam Presentation Convent, Galway her father’s home county. We hope that Jean will enjoy lots of sunny days in her retirement. WALK CLOSED The John F Leslie Woodland Walk is closed to the public from Monday 17 January until further notice. This is to allow for ongoing repair and maintenace before the Summer Season when we will all be able to enjoy this wonderful amenity. REMEMBERING ASHLING On Sunday last 16 January, hundreds of men, women and children walked from Tarbert Bridewell to Tarbert Island to remember Ashling Murphy, the 23 year old teacher cruelly murdered in Tullamore on Wednesday 12 January. At the Old Pier, Fr John O’Connor led prayers in her memory. In a moving tribute he acknowledged her work as a teacher and her rapport with her young pupils. He led prayers for Ashling, her family, her pupils, fellow teachers and the wider community. Timmy Flaherty, well known musician, who graduated with her from Mary Immaculate Training College, played some of her favourite pieces on uileann pipes and banjo. He was joined by Christopher and Catherine Kiely on fiddles in a moving musical omós. Maura Holly read a poem which she composed in her honour. Lighted candles were placed around the memorial stone which carried a framed photograph of Ashling. The Vigil organiser was Laura Lavery. Looking out over the quiet waters of the river Shannon I remembered another Cailín Bán, 16 year old Ellen Hanly who was also cruelly murdered by a man in June 1819. So, the crime of Femicide is not a recent phenomenon. Hopefully, Ashling’s murder was a watershed one and that the legislators will remember the name of Ashling Murphy in proposed legislation. It would be a fitting legacy for her. KERRY CANCER SUPPORT Well done to Steve Burke and Lockdown Landscapes who raised €1220 for Recovery Haven, Kerry Cancer Support. They would like to thank the photographers, Tarbert Bridewell and all who purchased photographs. Míle buíochas do gach éinne.

THE MIRACLE PRAYER

Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven. blessed Mother of the Son of God; Immaculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succour me in my necessity; there are none that can withstand your power. Oh, show me herein you are my Mother. Oh Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee. (3 times). Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands. (3 times) M.C.

(Mention your urgest request) Saint Expedite now that I ask you. Saint Expedite now what I want of you, this very second. Don’t waste another day. Grant me what I ask for. I know your power, I know you because of your work. I know you can help me. Do this for me and I will spread your name with love and honour so that it will be invoked again and again. Expedite this wish with speed, love, honour and goodness. Glory to you, Saint Expedite. T.W.
