APPLICATIONS OPEN FOR NEW €285,000 COMMUNITY FUND
Council opens applications for Community Activities Fund 2022 Kerry County Council is inviting applications from community groups in Kerry for the €285,000 Community Activities Fund for 2022. The Fund will support community groups, particularly in disadvantaged areas, with their non-pay running costs, for example utility bills or other non-pay operating costs including rental and lease costs, insurance bills. The Community Activities Fund (CAF) which is supported by the Department of Rural and Community Development forms parts of the Community Enhancement Programme and is open for applications until 28 February. Today’s announcement follows the launch last week of the €750,000 Community Support Fund, which is now in its eighth year. The call for applications to the CAF was made this week by the Chairperson of the Kerry Local Community Development Committee (LCDC), Cllr Norma Moriarty who visited Cumann Tithíochta na Dromada in Dromid, which has benefited from such funding in recent years. ‘This is a really targeted fund in that it supports running costs for community centres and facilities which can often be very onerous for voluntary groups. The Community Department at Kerry County Council is available to assist applicants and I hope that groups will apply for this important source of funding over the coming weeks,’ said Cllr Moriarty. Groups will also be able to use the funding to carry out necessary repairs and improvements to their facilities, purchase equipment such as tables and chairs, tools and signage, laptops and printers, lawnmowers, defibrillators, canopies and training equipment. Application forms and more information is now available on the Kerry County Council website: www.kerrycoco.ie and from the Community Department 066 7183680.

The deadline for receipt of proposals to deliver events is Friday 1pm, 4th March 2022. The programme will be devised based on feedback from children and young people, informed by what they want to participate in, and witness on the day. OPEN LETTER FROM THE ROSE OF TRALEE INTERNATIONAL FESTIVAL
Some misinformation has crept into the local public discourse, particularly online, in relation to our plans for Festival 2022. We want to politely intervene to reassure local people, and our Rose family further afield, that the Festival is blooming anew after a two-year hiatus, and we have very exciting plans for the 2022 event. Our plans for the 2022 Rose of Tralee International Festival include all the events that traditionally take place in town, the lights, parades, fireworks, family entertainment, street performances and much more. They also include, moving the dome, be it on a slightly smaller scale of 1000 square metres(!), to a site in the centre of town, for five nights of concerts and festivity. This is a very exciting development that will facilitate thousands of revellers by night, and children and families during the day. That guarantees an exciting weatherproof experience, and it will bring the Festival back to the heart of the community in Tralee. We made a decision in 2019/2020 to find an alternative to the Dome, which was costing us almost €250,000 annually. That financial burden was creating unsustainable pressure for the Festival, whilst swelling the coffers of suppliers from outside the county. That discussion was welcomed by our key partners, RTÉ, the Rose Hotel, and Kerry County Council along with the I.T.T. at the time, and we agreed that we would relocate to the brand new two thousand square metre Kerry Sports Academy facility just built by the I.T.T.. Those discussions were ongoing when Covid closed us all down.
Cruinniú na nÓg 2022 will be a hybrid event with a strong focus on live events. There will be digital elements and some online offerings, to engage as many children & young people as possible, on the day, across Kerry. Creative Ireland Kerry will focus on live events, working with creatives and organisations through the county. The Arts Office + Creative Ireland Kerry Office have complied a short questionnaire on what activities and events you would like to see happen for Cruinniú na nÓg on Saturday June 11th. It will be available on all the Arts Office social media channels: Facebook- KerryCoArts • https://www.facebook.com/KerryCoArts/ Twitter- kerrycoarts • https://twitter.com/kerrycoarts Instagram- kerrycoarts • https://www.instagram.com/kerrycoarts/ Alternatively, email the Arts Office + Creative Ireland Kerry Office at arts@kerrycoco.ie for a copy of the questionnaire on what activities and events you would like to see happen for Cruinniú na nÓg 2022. Arts Office | Creative Ireland Kerry Office | arts@kerrycoco.ie Kerry County Council: Dir Line: 066 7183703
That decision is now even more compelling, as during Covid the I.T.T. and their Cork counterparts have established the MTU, which is such a positive development for Kerry and for Tralee. We are now a university town! We have reengaged with the new entity, the MTU, and whereas our discussions are not concluded and are at a sensitive stage, we are confident that both parties can bring them to a successful conclusion. In that event, we look forward to shouting from the rooftops during five hours of live TV in 2022, that the Rose of Tralee International Festival is coming from the newly formed Munster Technological University, allowing us to create a magical experience at this exciting venue for all the patrons who attend the Rose Ball and our Selection Nights! We are also exploring some major opportunities to bring the crowds back to our Festival in Tralee during 2022, on a very big scale. Those plans are in the early stages, and we will not make any further comment on them for the time being. We are so excited to have formed a new partnership with the local, four-star, family run, Meadowlands Hotel. Whereas the popular Johnny Franks bar will continue to cater for the food and beverage requirements of regular customers, albeit with a Rosey tint added to their normal experience, the exclusive use of all the other facilities in the hotel will allow the Roses, RTÉ, our judges and our Rose team some quiet retreat. We will have the opportunity to plan, rest, and recuperate in that enchanting oasis on the Oakpark road. We have enjoyed thirteen years on the Fels Point site, with four Hotel Groups, including the Rose Hotel for the past four Festivals. Sadly, the commercial arrangements offered by the Rose Hotel were no longer viable for the Festival. We leave as friends, with great memories, and look forward to a wonderful experience in the four-star Meadowlands Hotel. Finally, we are launching our Festival in Dublin on Friday next, the 11th of February. It is a very exciting time for us and whereas we have many challenges ahead, we are quietly engaging with business and civic authorities around the town and county to make sure that our long-anticipated return will be a huge success for everyone who has anticipated the August festivities, and something truly worth waiting for. Very Best Regards, from the Rose of Tralee team.

SAN RITA WELLNESS
Welcome to San Rita Wellness weekly column…
Love is in the air and as it’s Valentines Day next Monday it might be worth asking ourselves... What is Love? Someone once said “Love is an understanding or a misunderstanding between two fools” Love comes in many ways, shapes and forms. This week, we are looking at three different kinds of love. The foods we LOVE, the people we LOVE and the different ways we can LOVE ourselves. Foods we LOVE ♥️ At San Rita Wellness we believe that it is important to find a way to still have the foods you love without feeling guilty, and that’s why our plan works so well for our members. We all know that if you have to deprive yourself of something it only makes you want it all the more. So, with consideration everything in moderation. It is important to us all to be able to still have the foods we love and still feel in control of our weight.

Tips : * Look on them as a treat rather than a threat. * Quality over Quantity, ie. go for a good quality chocolate rather than a cheaper brand. * Choosing lower calorie meals during the day allows you to have a more indulgent evening meal. * Keep active and burn calories to allow you to indulge a little at this time special time. People we LOVE ♥️ Having the love and support from the people around you is a very important part of a person’s wellness journey. We all love some time on our own but there are other times when we need the company of others. With the times we are in now it is still important to be in contact with people we love for example catching up with our friends either in person or over the phone. So lets look at how the people you love can help you on your Weight loss and Wellness journey. Tips: * Go for a walk together as a family. * Play cards or a board game in the evening time as very often this can be a danger time for snacking. * Ask them to keep their treats out of sight from you as they may tempt you. * Get everyone involved with you on a fun workout on You Tube etc. Self Care and LOVE ♥️ Loving yourself is not selfish. Make yourself a priority. Schedule in some “ME” Time. Don’t wait for the time to just magically appear. It won’t. If you don’t show love to yourself , you can’t expect anyone else to show love to you. It is also important to keep in mind how you speak to yourself. When you look in the mirror every morning start your day by giving yourself a compliment. Tips: * Dress up every morning and put on make up. * Have a pamper night, a relaxing bath, apply a face mask and paint your nails. * Every day set 10 or 15 mins aside without any distractions just for yourself. * A walk in the beautiful town park or the beach can be beneficial to both your mindset and your body. So to finish up a little Valentines thought, Don’t shower me with flowers Don’t dance with me for hours Don’t take me out to dinner Just say “I’m looking slimmer”
NB - Our weekly “In Person Meetings” take place in Listowel Community Centre every Wednesday and in The Ballybunion Health and Leisure Centre every Thursday.

The clarity of Colm Toibin’s prose is blended with the emotional truth of Anne Enright in this stand-out new novel of belonging and loss He handed the easel to the boatman, reaching down the pier wall towards the sea. Mr Lloyd has decided to travel to the island by boat without engine - the authentic experience. Unbeknownst to him, Mr Masson will also soon be arriving for the summer. Both will strive to encapsulate the truth of this place - one in his paintings, the other by capturing its speech, the language he hopes to preserve. But the people who live on this rock - three miles long and half-a-mile wide - have their own views on what is being recorded, what is being taken and what is given in return. Soft summer days pass, and the islanders are forced to question what they value and what they desire. As the autumn beckons, and the visitors head home, there will be a reckoning.

DEATHS The death took place of Sr Sacred Heart Meade, St Vincent’s Convent, Galway and formerly of Glencullare, Tarbert. She died on Wednesday 2 February and her Requiem Mass was celebrated in the Franciscan Abbey Church, Galway on Friday 4 February followed by interment in the Sisters of Mercy Convent, Galway. Aged 94, Kathleen was one of four daughters born to James and Sarah Meade of Pulleen, Tarbert. All four daughters attended Reenturk Primary School and Kathleen and her sister Delia completed their secondary school education at the Convent of Mercy, Tuam, County Galway and both joined the Mercy Order. Kathleen entered the Mercy Order as Sr. Sacred Heart and trained as a teacher at Carysfort Teacher Training College. All her teaching career was spent in primary teaching at An Spidéal, Connemara where she was very popular with pupils and staff. Her sister Delia joined the Order as Sr Raphael and her academic career was spent teaching at the Mercy Secondary School in Galway city. When both sisters retired they lived out their retirement at the Convent of Mercy in Oughterard, Galway where Sr Rachael died in 2008. She was also predeceased by her elder sister Sadie O’Connor who died in Tarbert at the age of 97 on 2 November 2021 and her sister Moira Prendiville. Sympathy of the community to her nephews and nieces and the extended O’Connor and Prendiville families. The death took place of James (Jim Paul) Kissane, Lahesrough, Ballybunion. James in his eighties died at his residence on Monday 31 January. His remains reposed at St Mary’s Funeral Home, Tarbert on Wednesday 2 February with a large crowd in attendance. Removal of remains took place on Thursday and the cortege proceeded via the Lower road and Coolnanoonagh, Tarbert where he and his wife Mary Josephine née O’Connor farmed in recent years. Requiem Mass took place in St Teresa’s Church, Ballydonoghue followed by entombment at Kilahenny Cemetery, Ballybunion. Jim Paul was considered a good judge of cattle with a keen interest in poultry breeding. He played on the Ballydonoghue team of the late Fifties and early Sixties and was a member of the team which defeated Tarbert in the 1959 North Kerry Football Final. Sympathy of the community to his wife Mary Josephine, three sons and three daughters, brother Chris, brothers-in-law Thomas and Kieran O’Connor, Ardmore, Tarbert, extended family, relatives and friends. The death took place recently of Shirley O’Connell, Hornsey, London. Shirley was the wife of John O’Connell, Kilpadogue,Tarbert. John and Shirley resided in London for over 60 years and were parents to two children, Anne and John. John and his late brother Georgie and their spouses were very involved in the running of the London/Tarbert Association for many years. There was a large attendance at her cremation which took place in Finchley Crematorium on Thursday 3 February. Sympathy to John and his family, sisters-in-law Bríd Histon, Mary Gilroy, Noreen Costello and Pat Horan, brothers-in-law, Patsy and Donie O’Connell. Beannacht Dé le h-anamacha na marbh go léir. CÚRSAÍ EAGLAISE It was nice to hear St Mary’s Choir in full voice again for the 11.30am Sunday Mass and their rendition of ‘Gabhaim Molta Bhríde’ in honour of St Brigid which they will sing every Sunday during the month of February. Thursday 3 February was the Feast of St Blaise when traditionally the blessing of the throats took place. There was no Mass in Tarbert on Thursday and no blessing of throats took place on days either before or after. Likewise there was no blessing of candles on Candlemas Day or any reference to either St Brigid or St Blaise. The Church would be ill advised to neglect these traditional practices or rituals which have been for generations an essential part of liturgy. LOCAL IMPROVEMENTS Well done to Glas Contractors, Kerry County Council and TII on the erection of the new safety barrier running between the New and Old piers at Tarbert Island. This black metal rail barrier with concrete base looks well and replaces the old timber barrier which had collapsed WELL DONE, FIONA The Castletroy Park Hotel, Limerick has recently been awarded the top rated Wedding Venue. Limerick for 2021 by weddingdates.ie. Congratulations to Fiona Stack, Hotel Manager and her staff. Fiona, a native of Dingle is married to Niall Stack, Kilpadogue, Tarbert. SPRING IS HERE ‘Anois teacht an Earraig beidh an lá ag dul chun síneadh is taréis na Féile Bríde ardóigh mé mo sheol ‘ -Rafteiri an Fhile. The lines we learned at school remind us that traditionally, St Brigid’s Day, the 1st February was the start of Spring and the start of the farming year. In was nice during the past week to see daffodils and snowdrops in bloom and early rhubarb beginning to show in the garden. It has been a very mild winter and we now look forward to the lengthening day and the setting of early potatoes. PRAYER TO ST BRIGID ‘Brigid of Ireland, bless our dear land. May no fire or no flame burn us, May no lake or no sea drown us, May no sword or no spear wound us, May no king or no chief insult, May all the birds sing for us, May all the cattle low for us, May all the insects buzz for us, May all the angels of God always protect us .’ - buíochas do Patsy O’Shea, Sallowglen as an paidir seo. According to the Four Masters, Brigid died in 535 a.d. and was interred in her own church in Kildare. The church was pillaged by the Vikings in 878 and Brigid’s remains were removed to Downpatrick Cathedral. St Brigid will always be Our Muire na Gael, Brigid of Ireland. GAA 500 DRAW Comhghairdeas do Tommy O’Donnell, Kilcolgan, Tarbert who was the winner of €500 in the GAA February Monthly draw. John O’Dowd was the lucky winner in the January draw.

BALLYLONGFORD GAA
North Kerry Senior League Div 2 Rd 2 Played in Ballylongford @2pm Sunday 6th February 2022 Ballylongford 0.11pts v Moyvane 1.10 Unlucky lads! Our Senior Team have been in action over the last two weeks in the North Kerry Football League Div.2 Their first game was away to Knocknagoshel and while the odds were stacked against them they acquitted themselves really well. While they did not win, they played very well and were unlucky not to come away with at least a draw. On Sunday last they played Moyvane at the local O’Rahilly Park and both teams served up a thrilling game in a very wintery afternoon. Both sides must be complemented with twenty two scores being notched up over the hour despite the unsavoury conditions. It was Moyvane that emerged victors on the score 1-10 to 11pts. The team is really shaping up well and despite being so close to victory on the two occasions it will be only a matter of time before success will be theirs. It is marvellous also for the management team of Mossie O’Connor, Kevin Mangan, Mike Higgins and Sean Sheehy who are working trodgently behind the scenes. Results: Asdee 3-10 Knocknagoshel 1-4, Asdee got their North Kerry League off to a winning start with an excellent win over Knocknagoshel, who were down a few starters. The home side, without Darren Russell this year, played some brilliant football throughout, especially considering the wet and windy conditions. Playing against the wind in the first half, Asdee opened the scoring with a Paul O’Carroll free, followed by a lovely Darragh Keane point. Knock replied with a point before Kieran Kelly popped up with a cracking point, with Darragh Keane adding another. Owen Tydings blasted an unstoppable penalty to the roof of the net, with a Darragh Keane free followed by 2 points from Knock. Asdee defended very well, breaking in numbers, with great flowing moves seeing them establish a big lead, as Martin Collins coolly finished an excellent team move to the net. This left the half time score 2-5 to 0-3. The second half started as the first finished with Asdee extending their lead through a brilliant Darragh Keane point. Brendan Keane was causing problems inside and got his first point from a lovely mark, before Cyril Dineen finished a great move to the net. Knock added a free before Darragh Keane got his fourth point of the day from a free. Brendan Keane added his second point of the day before Knock got a goal from the penalty spot. Brendan Keane rounded out the scoring with an excellent point from distance to leave the final score 3-10 to 1-4. It was a very enjoyable game, in which every man can be proud of their performance. Special mentions to Martin Collins, Owen Tydings, Eoin Kennedy, Kieran Kelly and Jack Keane who controlled possession and marshalled the defence, while Darragh Keane, Brendan Keane, and Stephen Lynch were dangerous up front and displayed some fantastic high fielding. å Asdee team: James Kelly, Con Carmody, Martin Collins 1 gl, Conor Keane, Jack Collins, Owen Tydings 1 gl, Paul O’Carroll 1 pt, Kieran Kelly 1 pt, Jack Keane, Darragh Keane 5 pts, Sean Keane, Eoin Kennedy, Stephen Lynch, Cyril Dineen 1 gl, Brendan Keane 3 pts. It got me thinking about a bible verse that I had recently come across. Proverbs 28:13
But when I read the Word of God l read that the only individual ever to have walked in human form and yet completely without sin was Jesus. And the only reason Jesus came to this earth was to save sinners like you and I. We read in Luke 7:34 that “Jesus was a friend of...sinners.”
world” John 1:29. He was of course referring to Jesus. Imagine if we didn’t have Jesus Christ to bring our sins to, not just the obvious ones but also the secret, hidden ones. Imagine if there was no such thing as forgiveness for our sins and we had to carry the guilt and shame in our heart and mind to the end of our days! But , we don’t have to “...cover our sins” we don’t have to hide our deepest and darkest sins because Jesus promises that if “we confess and forsake them” . He will have mercy on us and forgive. That is the greatest Good News you will ever know! Isaiah 1:18 puts it like this “Come now, and let us reason together “, says the Lord, “Though your sins are like scarlet they shall be as white as snow. Though they are red like crimson, they shall be as wool.” God’s love for us is beyond imagining. And every day we live we have a choice of a brand-new beginning, made new, cleansed, forgiven, a fresh start if only we are willing to avail of the forgiveness, mercy and grace which Jesus paid for by His death.
