LISTOWEL TIDY TOWNS NEED YOU
Listowel Tidy Towns group who met this week were delighted to eventually have in their possession their 13th Gold medal, awarded to them when they were acknowledged as Highly Commended in the County Awards the National Tidy Towns competition in Dublin last November. As society is taking its steps back to ‘normality’ the Listowel Tidy Towns group are making a very special appeal for more hands on deck. The Listowel Tidy Towns group was founded in 1993 when a group of concerned individuals got together with the aim of working with the whole community to present Listowel to its highest potential. It was set up in response to the need for improvements in the town. The work of this group was first recognised in 2004 with their first bronze medal which gave them the enthusiasm that was needed to aim for bigger and better. And that is exactly what they did, when in 2018 Listowel was awarded the Tidiest Town in Ireland and to date are the holders of 13 Gold medals. Listowel Tidy Towns success has transformed what was a small marketing town in north Kerry into a little gem in the Kingdom of Kerry and has been put on the map not just in Ireland but across many European countries. This month Listowel Tidy Towns will celebrate 29 years in existence. However, it’s sad to say, the future of Listowel Tidy Towns is now very much in jeopardy and is solely in your hands. Many of our members are advancing in years and are no longer physically able for the type of work that they were doing. While the work of Tidy Towns is never plain sailing, it is also very much a social outlet where many strong friendships have been made down through the years. Next month, the 8th of March on their 29th year Listowel Tidy Towns group are holding their AGM in St.Patricks Hall at 7pm and are making a very special but urgent appeal to all resident associations, community groups and interested individuals of all ages to come along or be represented. Listowel Tidy Towns are crying for new blood and new ideas. Unfortunately without this Listowels Tidy Towns future is very bleak. The people of Listowel have bought into the theme of “Tidy Towns” and hopefully this theme will continue into the future. Listowel Tidy Towns group needs you.

CELEBRATION OF 100 YEARS SINCE THE BLACK AND TANS LEFT BALLYLONGFORD
The people of North Kerry are asked to come out and rejoice and celebrate to mark 100 years since the Black and Tans left Ballylongford. The Black and Tans left Ballylongford barracks and headed back for England on the 16th of February 1922. The celebration of these terrible men leaving will be celebrated on Sunday the 20th of February at 2:30pm instead at the corner house in Ballylongford. This iconic building adorns the plaque of Ballylongford’s most famous son, The O’Rahilly (pictured). It is a day to be celebrated as Ballylongford finally was free from their terrible oppressor. Ballylongford suffered for a long time statrting with the early viking invasion, then to the long oppression at the hands of the British invaders and all the terrors the British subjected the people to such as the siege of Carrigafoyle Castle under Pelham’s forces in the 1500s, the attack on Lislaughtin abbey, the redcoats causing mayhem, the genocide which is known as the famine and then to finally endure the Black and Tans for nearly two years which included burnings, murder, destruction and chaos. The British were the plague of Ballylongford and 100 years of freedom from their tyranny will be gleefully celebrated. There will be a speech about the history of the event, music and celebration at this Centenary occasion. The day will be a double event as we will also remember the terrible event that was the large-scale burning of Ballylongford which would be 101 years ago on Wednesday the 23rd of February. The recently erected plaque on the corner house in remembrance of this atrocity will be officially unveiled. So we will remember this atrocity too on Sunday the 20th. There will be entertainment, food and refreshments afterwards in Finucanes bar. All are welcome. Pictured is The O’Rahilly plaque
We would love to see you all getting back to socialising again in a safe, controlled environment. To book a place contact Bridie on 086-8556431

CAROLINE’S DÓTERRA ESSENTIAL OILS CAROLINE’S POD OF POSITIVITY Welcome to our weekly column and our Pod of Positivity. It is here you will find little tips and tools that help us to maintain a life of health, wellness, love, and gratitude as well as all the information on DóTerra’s powerful essential oils. You need to Love yourself first before you Love anyone else! February is the month associated with love and often one will associate it with the love for someone else or the valentine in one’s life. But it is also a time for yourself and the love that you need to have for yourself. Self-love is the foundation of all success and all the good that comes into your life. You need to love yourself first before you love anyone else, whether that is your children, your partner, your friends, whoever that might be, because it is important to show yourself self-love, self-care and compassion first. This week we look at dóTerra’s Grapefruit and Frankincense essential oils and how they can support us in our self care routine and wellbeing. Grapefruit is referred to as the forbidden fruit and one of the Seven Wonders of Barbados. It is known for its energising, invigorating and uplifting aroma and is an excellent pickme-up to our emotions. Diffuse this oil in your cold-water diffuser and add a drop or two to your daily drinking water to give you an uplifting and happy feeling. In the evening or before you go to bed have a relaxing bath, light a candle, and add three to four drops of Grapefruit and Frankincense to the bath water for pure tranquillity. Both of these oils are very beneficial to the skin and it is recommended to add one to two drops of each to your face cream. As Frankincense is the most scared of all oils, it is a very fitting one for this month and is at the top of the list in the Wellness Pyramid. Known as the King of essential oils a nice practice is to use topically over your heart and crown chakra before meditation or yoga. I like to use it before I write my daily gratitude list in my Journal.
LEE STRAND IS THE FIRST DAIRY PROCESSOR IN IRELAND TO SIGN UP WITH FLOGAS TO THE CARBON OFFSETTING INITIATIVE
Lee Strand is the first dairy processor in Ireland to sign up with Flogas to the carbon offsetting initiative for its commercial customers. Lee Strand has compensated for 209 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions by investing with Flogas in the South Pole’s climate protection project, Aura Solar in Mexico. James Sugrue, Plant Manager, Lee Strand “As part of our continued commitment to protecting our environment, Lee Strand is proud to be the first dairy processor in Ireland to avail of the Flogas carbon offsetting initiative. This enables Lee Strand to offset the carbon gas produced in our production plant and therefore having zero carbon output. This strengthens our sustainability strategy as Lee Strand also has zero waste to landfill with our partnership locally with Dillion Waste. Lee Strand is continually striving to operate sustainably, every step in our production process is important including our 100% renewable and 100% recyclable cartons.” John Rooney, Managing Director, Flogas Ireland said, “We’re delighted to welcome Lee Strand as our very first dairy processor in Ireland for the carbon offsetting initiative. Lee Strand has a very proactive approach towards tackling climate change and has differentiated themselves from their competition in the marketplace.” Carbon offsetting is recognised worldwide as a way of managing carbon emissions. Flogas collaborates with South Pole, a gold standard provider of carbon offsetting projects worldwide. By investing in sustainable global projects, companies can reduce or capture an equivalent amount of carbon emissions. By providing a clean alternative to fossil fuel-generated electricity, the project significantly reduces emissions and helps mitigate the environmental risks of the transport of hydrocarbons into the delicate ecosystem of the Gulf of California. Aura Solar also employs local workers, who it provides with technical training. DóTerra’s essential oils can be used in three different ways: Topically – applying them on to our skin with or without a carrier oil. Aromatically – by placing two to three drops into a cold-water diffuser and diffusing these oils in our homes, classrooms, offices, salons or places of work and business. And the third way, internally – by adding them to your favourite food, waters, or drinks, or simply by taking one drop under the tongue daily. The oils are a natural solution to care for our needs and our family’s health needs and they can support us in many of the following that we experience from time to time, such as: Anxiety Issues, Digestive Support, Sleep Assist, Muscle Care, Stress Buster, Depression, Grief, Energy Boost, Skin Support, Immunity Boost, Allergy Assist and so much more. As a dóTerra wellness advocate I know how the oils can support the Body, the Mind, and the Mood. Over the past three years I have supported many people and their families in using dóTerra’s oils and products in counties Kerry, Limerick and Cork. EVENT – On Sunday 27th February I’m very excited to be taking part in the ‘Time to Re-Connect’ event at the Killarney Plaza Hotel. On Thursday, February 3rd, 2022, 5th year students from Presentation Secondary School Listowel took part in a pilgrimage to local Holy Wells of North Kerry. The students were privileged to have tour guide Marian Relihan accompany them as they visited each Holy Well. Her insights into the traditions and rituals associated with the wells was greatly appreciated by the students on the day. The Presentation students visited St. Bridget’s Well in Ballyduff, Our Lady’s Well in Ballyheigue, and Wether’s Well also known as Tobar Na Molt in Ardfert. As part of the experience the students participated in the ritual of ‘doing the rounds and collecting holy water’ as they heard of stories of the experiences of people long ago. When visiting a well the students learned of the tradition of ‘paying the rounds’ which is when a person walks clockwise 5 times while reciting a decade of the rosary each time. It is a tradition that dates back to penal times. Many of the students remarked that they now look forward to visiting these wells again with family members. This group of students are currently engaging in reflection on their pilgrimage and preparing for their presentation for Ceiliúradh na nÓg 2022 – a Diocesan project to encourage young people to share their experience of faith at this time. Ms Molyneaux, Religion teacher in Presentation said “The pilgrimage to the Holy Wells was enjoyed by all and certainly encouraged an appreciation of our local area and the connection with the traditions and rituals which were so important for people in the past.”

When setting your goals ,make sure they are S.M.A.R.T. S - Specific - A specific goal has a much greater chance of being achieved than a general goal. G.A.A. SCENE Our Senior Team were in action again last week where they played Duagh at the local field on Sunday last in the North Kerry Football League Div.2 Round 3 game. While the team are improving with every game, they were rather unfortunate not to record their first win in this eagerly contested affair. However, torrential rain and poor weather conditions faced both teams and made underfoot conditions rather heavy at the O’Rahilly Park venue. Duagh opened the score sheet with a well manoeuvred first point of the game after three minutes of play adding another a short time afterwards, Ballylongford’s Ciaran O’Connor responded with a free and Jeremiah Tydings quickly added another point to level the game, with only a few minutes of play before the short whistle. However, disaster struck before the interval when Duagh were awarded a penalty which they duly converted and to carry a comfortable two point lead cushion facing into the second half. Half Time score, Ballylongford 3pts to Duagh 1.2pts. There was stalemate in the opening 10 minutes of play in the second half as scores were increasingly hard to come by. However Ballylongford started to add some much needed points and by the twelfth minute had brought the contest to level pegging. The efforts of Goal keeper Shane O Sullivan kept our boys in the contest as he made some wonderful saves at times when goals were certainly on the cards. But the game was thrown on its head by the end of the third quarter as Duagh were awarded their second penalty of the game, again which they made no mistake in putting past the desperate efforts of Shane O’Sullivan and so once again Duagh hit the lead, a lead they held right to the final eight minutes. The home side did not throw in the towel and with wonderful displays of good open football their efforts saw them level matters as the clock surpassed the 60th minute. Final Score Ballylongford 0-10 Duagh 2-04 and so earn their first league point of the competition. Team: 1. Shane O’Sullivan 2. Conor Carmody 3. Sean Carmody 4. Joe McCarthy 1pt 5. Eoin O’Connor 6. Michael McEllistrem 7. Matt O’Connor 8. Sean Hanrahan 9. Adam Finucane 10. Michael Holly 11. Paddy O’Neill 12. Jack Mulvihill 13. Ciaran O’Connor 7pts 14. Tadgh McEllistrem 15. Jeremiah Tydings 2pts. Subs 25. Liam McCarthy for Eoin O’Connor, Ciaran Dowd, Liam Connolly, Cillian Kennelly and Paudie Moroney. FIXTURE: The team play their last and final round game this weekend as they take one fellow parishioners St Marys Asdee in Round 4. That game goes ahead at Walsh Park, Tullahinell on this coming Saturday February 19th at 3pm Sharp. Please support the team by being there. HAT-TRICK HERO HOULIHAN LEADS LISTOWEL U14 RFC INTO THE CUP SEMI FINAL
ball and his great courage in clearing his lines. With just 7 minutes to go winger Aaron Maloney managed to gain 10 metres against all the odds up the left side and exceptional consistent passing by cool headed Fionn Byrne at scrum half drove the pack up the field inch by inch. After a long phase of controlled rucking by Listowel forwards, the backline was put into play and out half cathal byrne played an intelligent grubber kick behind the Abbeyfeale defence for Rochford to run onto creating a penalty. The well drilled forwards carried the ball up again with Sean Ross driving forward and prop forward Cian Carey immense in constantly carrying the ball into the opposition, alongside Ruari O Connell and Jason Morriarty time and again driving forward with strength and determination. The final match winning try came from Man of the Match and inspirational Captain John Houlihan picking from the base of the ruck and through the gap for his hat-trick and leading his team into the semi final.
LISTOWEL 15 ABBEYFEALE 10
Listowel’s high performing U 14 squad led by a storm-trooping performance from captain John Houlihan, had to dig deep against a well drilled and strong Abbeyfeale opposition to land a semi final spot in the West Munster Cup. This will be the Listowel’s u14s’ squads second semi final this season after the bitter disappointment of a 5 to 0 defeat by their arch rivals, Tralee in the semi final of the West Munster league. A game they had every opportunity to win. Held in good conditions at Listowel’s co-op pitch with a large vocal crowd, the home team had the pressure on from the start and after just 3 minutes and following strong controlled carries by Cian Carey, Ewan Somers, Jason Morriarty and Ryan Henderson, scrum half Fionn Byrne sent a blind side pass to number 8 John Houlihan whose great pace and strength, led him over on the corner for Listowel’s first try with the long distance conversion sent just inch’s wide by out half Cathal Byrne. Abbeyfeale showed great determination and a relieving kick caught the Listowel back line off guard with a cruel bounce allowing Abbeyfeale to get under the posts and take the lead 7 to 5 before half time. With 2 minutes left in the first half, a superb Listowel line out win saw Marcos Leahy, Shea Culhane, Ruari O Connell and a high flying Ewan Somers secure excellent possession and a well worked move lead to an exceptional 50 metre kick from Cathal Byrne, which was chased down at high speed by the flying winger Jack O’ Connor along with excellent speed by centres Jake Rockford and Darragh O’Sullivan putting intense pressure on the opposition, leading to a Listowel scrum at the 5m line. This led to a move directly from the training ground , which saw Hooker Ryan Herderson win the hook and a dummy move from the scrum half Byrne sending the opposition the wrong way creating a small gap which left the the opening for the exceptional John Houlihan to cross for Listowel’s second near the corner .
An intense period of pressure from Abbeyfeale followed where incredible courage was shown by all of the Listowel team with notable bravery by Fionn Byrne and James Hunt and a simply superb crunching tackle by Jake Rockford on his opposite number helping to keep Listowel’s defensive line intact. Listowel will head to Aghadoe on February 26th to take on a well fancied Killarney side in the west Munster Cup semi final knowing that they have the panel, the skill and the character to overcome their underdog status.
The second half was quite the even contest with Abbeyfeale striking first after a well worked move led to a penalty and the teams level at 10 to 10. Some excellent kicking by Abbeyfeale piled the pressure onto Listowel whose full back James Hunt showed his incredible catching skills again under the high

DEATHS The O’Connell family, Kilpadogue suffered a second bereavement in recent weeks with the death of Bridget O’Connell, London and Dundrum, County Tipperary. Bridget was the wife of the late Georgie O’Connell, Kilpadogue, Tarbert. Georgie and Bridget lived in London for over 60 years and during that time they were frequent visitors to Tarbert. Bridget’s remains will be brought to St Gabriel’s Church, Archway, London on Monday 21 february arriving at 6pm. Sadly the news broke last Thursday 10 February of the sudden death of 55 years old Brendan O’Brien of Lixnaw. Brendan and his son Kevin had been doing their rounds the previous day in Tarbert. Self employed, honest and hardworking, Brendan had been selling fruit and vegetables to retail shops and outlets across North Kerry and West Limerick for over 30 years. He was very obliging and very popular with all his customers. Following Requiem Mass in St Michael’s Church, Lixnaw on Monday 14 February Brendan was laid to rest in Kilfeighney Cemetery, Lixnaw. Sympathy to his wife Helen, sons Kevin, Peter and Robert and his extended family. The death also took place at an advanced age of Sean Adams, late of Adams Garage, Glin and Tralee. Sean had spent a lifetime in the motor trade. Main dealer for Fiat, Renault, Peugeot and other car manufacturers he had developed the business from small beginnings to becoming one of the leading car retailers in Munster on the basis of excellent sales and service, providing significant employment. Following Requiem Mass on Sunday 13 February in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, Glin he was laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery. SPRING IS HERE ‘Anois teacht an Earraig, beidh an lá ag dul chun síneadh is taréis na Féile Bríde ardóigh mé mo sheol’ -Rafteiri an Fhile. These lines we learned at National School remind us that traditionally St Brigid’s Day, the 1st February was the start of Spring and the start of the farming year. It is nice to see the daffodils and snowdrops in bloom and the early rhubarb beginning to show in the garden. It has been a very mild winter due to climate change. We now look forward to the lengthening day and the setting of early potatoes. PRAYER TO ST BRIGID ‘Brigid of Ireland bless our dear land. May no fire or no flame burn us. May no lake or no sea drown us. May no sword or no spear wound us. May no king or no chief insult us. May all the birds sing for us. May all the cattle low for us. May all the insects buzz for us. May all the angels of God always protect us.’ --buíochas do Patsy O’Shea, Sallowglen as an paidir seo. According to the Four Masters, Brigid died in 535 AD and was interred in her own church in Kildare. The church was pillaged by the Vikings in 878 AD and Brigid’s remains were removed to Downpatrick Cathedral. St Brigid will always be our Muire of the Gael, Brigid of Ireland.

We are clocking up the mileage in the Every Step Counts challenge. Over sixty participants have walked the equivalent of three times around Ireand in the past four weeks, while embracing a healthier lifestyle and enjoying the beauty of our environs. Thanks to the great efforts, Beale GAA ranks fifteenth club in Munster and second in Kerry. While this is not a competition, some friendly rivalries add to the enjoyment of the challenge. Hopefully, the weather will favour us as we head into the final week of this walking challenge. Beale GAA Club extend sympathies to the family of Eileen Guerin, who recently passed to her eternal reward. Coming from a strong GAA family, it was inevitable that Eileen would play an active part. Her brother, Sonny O’Connor, played with Ballybunion in the 1950s and the GAA tradition was carried on by her sons, Paul and Liam, who wore the club colours in the 1980s and 1990s. Eileen was secretary of Beale Bord na nÓg in 1990 when our young players had an unprecedented year. They contested eight semi-finals and six finals, winning five of those finals. At that time, Danny Shanahan was chairman, Jimmy Buckley treasurer and Reggie Griffn was PRO. 1998 was a memorable year for Eileen. As school principal, she had secured the services of Liam Browne as football team manager/trainer and Ballybunion Boys’ School added to the juvenile trophy cabinet. They were crowned North Kerry Cumann na mBunscoil champions. They then qualified for the county final but came up against the challenges of Dingle, who proved too strong on the day. Mrs Guerin was very proud of the exploits of her young troops. Ar dheis Dé gurb a h-anam dhíl.

ASDEE GAA
Result: Asdee 2-5 Moyvane 0-8, Asdee overcame Moyvane in a cracking, tense encounter to record their second win of the year. Asdee were stretched for numbers and up against a strong Moyvane outfit, who have Munster club next week. Asdee had a dream start which saw Cyril Dineen bury the ball to the roof of the net, finishing off a long ball from Eoin Kennedy inside the first 30 seconds. This was followed by a lovely Darragh Keane point. Moyvane responded with a free, but the Asdee defence were outstanding throughout, not giving the dangerous Moyvane attack an inch. Asdee struck for a second goal, with a long Darragh Keane ball punched to the net by Stephen Lynch. Lynch then caught a great mark & pointed from all of 40 yards. Moyvane got 2 points before half time, divided by a Darragh Keane free, as Asdee held possession well while down to 14 men with a black card. The half time score was Asdee 2-3 Moyvane 0-3. Moyvane started the second half the stronger & got a couple of fine points to reduce the lead as Asdee spurned a few scoring chances. The game increasing in tense, with no man taking a backward step. A flare-up saw Asdee receive 2
red cards, while Moyvane got 1, to leave Moyvane with a man advantage for the final 20 minutes. Mighty team spirit & tackling saw Asdee keep Moyvane at bay as they tried to close the gap. Asdee then had a well worked break up the field ending with an excellent John Doran point from long range. Moyvane added 2 frees to close the gap to 3 points, but every man was putting in a shift to ensure the extra man did not tell on the scoreboard. Asdee turned over the ball & a brilliant passing move saw Darragh Keane kick a beauty with his left from distance with a few minutes remaining. Moyvane got a point to leave 3 points in it, but Asdee held firm & did not give up the goal chance Moyvane looked for. A mighty team performance saw Asdee hold on for victory 2-5 to 0-8. Every player can be proud of the work rate & quality they displayed at this stage of the year. We wish Moyvane the best of luck in their Munster campaign. Congrats also to Jack Keane who is our captain for the year, with Kieran Kelly vice-captain. Asdee: James Kelly, Con Carmody, Martin Collins, Kieran Kelly, Jack Collins, Owen Tydings, Paul O’Carroll, John Doran 1pt, Jack Keane, Darragh Keane 3pts, Sean Keane, Eoin Kennedy, Stephen Lynch 1-1, Cyril Dineen 1 gl, Brendan Keane.
