LISTOWEL TIDY TOWNS NEED YOU

With no National Tidy Towns competitions last year and many of our members having to cocoon throughout the pandemic, the Listowel Tidy Towns group were forced to postpone many of their plans. Now as we cautiously take steps back to ‘normality’ the Listowel Tidy Towns Group are making a special appeal for more hands on deck while still adhering to the Covid 19 hygeine safety measures. Listowel Tidy Towns are happy to announce that their submission for the National Tidy Towns Competition 2021 has been submitted and yes there are some local competitions going ahead this year. Listowel Tidy Towns are inviting all estates to get involved in the competition of their suitable category. Resident associations and community spirit goes a long way. The upkeep of these estates also played a major role in Listowel being awarded the Tidiest Town in Ireland 2018 and Tidy Towns are asking you to keep up the good work. Our roadside gardens speak for themselves. They are a credit to their owners and judges will have a difficult time choosing one above the other. But you must register your garden to be included in the competition. You don’t have to have a big garden or live in an estate to get involved in the excitement. There’s also a special category for hanging baskets/window boxes. To enter this year’s local competition, please call to Oonagh at Broderick’s Pharmacy on or before Saturday july 24th. Many thanks to all our sponsors who never let us down year after year. Your generous support is so very much appreciated. At the moment, as most of their members are fully vaccinated and adhering to the present Covid 19 guidelines, Tidy Towns can work as a group again and are catching up on the usual projects. However, if Listowel is to maintain the high standard it has worked so hard to achieve it needs the full support and involvement of the whole community. Remember Listowel Tidy Towns group is a voluntary community group working for and with the community. You can keep up to date with the happens of the group by checking out the Listowel Tidy Towns Facebook page or for further information ring Mary on 087 627 0033

CLARIFICATION NEEDED ON THE SHANNON ESTUARY TASKFORCE. CLLR MICHAEL FOLEY

Cllr Michael Foley said: “I have made contact with the Tanaiste/Minister Leo Varadkar seeking clarification on the formation of the Shannon Estuary Taskforce. The one thing we don’t need here in North Kerry is another talking shop. The Terms of Reference for the Task Force must be clear and precise and must have in place a financial budget by Government to implement its findings otherwise it will be a waste of time.”

Cllr Foley continued: “The Taskforce must not impede in anyway the Shannon Technology & Energy Hub (Shannon LNG), but must work in solidarity with this vital project for the region and country. The Taskforce should aim to attract both national and foreign companies as the IDA seem to have no interest in attracting investment and jobs to our area. This has been proven with their lack of site visits over the years compared to our neighboring counties.” Cllr Foley concluded: “I personally have been calling for the Taskforce to be put in place since the formation of this Government. However I will hold my judgement to see that the Terms of Reference are of advantage to North Kerry and that a financial budget is put in place for its findings. I expect a speedy report within six months and is not dragged out for years as the situation in North Kerry is urgent.”

FÍS NA HÓIGE MOVIE REVIEW MADAGASCAR 3: EUROPE’S MOST WANTED

This week Fís na hÓige member, Aideen O’Shea, is reviewing the movie; “Madagascar 3”. If you’re looking for a family movie to watch, keep an eye on this page where Fís na hÓige will be reviewing the very best movies for you to watch. Madagascar 3: Europe’s most wanted is the third of the Madagascar movies. We meet our main characters once again, Alex voiced by Ben Stiller, Marty voiced by Chris Rock, Melman voiced by David Schwimmer and Gloria voiced by Jada Pinkett Smith. In addition we have Gia voiced by Jessica Chastain, Vitaly voiced by Brayn Cranston and Stefano voiced by Martin Short. We see our main four leave Madagascar with hopes to return to New York City but as in any movie that doesn’t go according to plan with our villain Captain Chantel Dubois voiced by Frances Mcdormand is out to get Alex in Monaco. We watch our main four and their new found friends leave Monaco and travel with a circus first to Rome for their first performance as a group which was very underwhelming to say the least but they worked together to improve each act and by the time they got to London they were absolutely perfect. Captain Chantel Dubouis catches up with them and tries to capture him in New York city but luckily Alex is not hurt in their encounter. Madagascar 3: Europe’s most wanted had some notable music, for instance the infamous love it or hate it “Afro Circus”. The budget for Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted was a whooping 145 million USD. Which is 5 million less than the previous Madagascar 2. In my own opinion I believe that the original madagascar will always be the best for the sole reason that it has the “I like to move it move it” which my Nana and I used to dance to when I was small. Unfortunately Madagascar 3:Europe’s Most Wanted did not deliver the same musical joy the original did which was truly and utterly disappointing. To be fair it is a good option for a family movie night but it wouldn’t be my first choice. In the end I would rate Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted a six out of ten.

CAROLINE’S DÓTERRA ESSENTIAL OILS CAROLINE’S POD OF POSITIVITY Welcome to our weekly column and our Pod of Positivity. It is here you will find little tips, tools and information that help us to maintain a life of health, wellness, love, and gratitude while incorporating dóTerra’s powerful essential oils into our daily routine. Tummy Upset – Stomach Discomfort – Digestive Problems… I’ve an Oil for that! This week’s I want to focus on dóTerra’s Digest Zen essential oil or otherwise known as ZenGest. A powerful friend to all of us in our home and was used over the course of the week as one or two of us in the family had overindulged on Easter treats! ZenGest is known as the body balancing oil or the tummy tamer blend. I always like to keep a roller bottle pre-blended with some fractionated coconut oil in each of the bathrooms just in case anyone is feeling unwell, queasy or is experiencing butterflies in the tummy due to feelings or thoughts of returning to school. We apply the roller bottle to our wrist points, behind our ears, the back of the neck and over our tummy area. This essential oil relieves constipation, eases bloating, relieves indigestion and is a powerful assistant in the treatment of IBS and Chron’s disease. It will also help stop diarrhoea and vomiting and can relieve symptoms of food poisoning when taken in a small amount of water as directed. ZenGest is infused with Ginger, Fennel, Coriander, Tarragon, Anise, Caraway and Peppermint essential oils which combine to help ease occasional stomach discomfort, maintain a healthy gastrointestinal tract and aid in digestion. ZenGest can be used aromatically, topically, and internally, and for those of us who are prone to car travel sickness it is our number one go to essential oil in diminishing feelings of queasiness and stomach upset. Our number one tip for anyone who experiences digestive discomfort is to add one drop to 4oz of water and drink before meals. Rub some on behind the ears and on the wrist points before long car journeys or carry your roller bottle with you! Rub on to the tops of the big toes to support sinuses. When individuals are fully overwhelmed and overstimulated, they may lose their appetite for food, life, and the physical world in general and may become apathetic about their situation and begin neglecting their body’s basic needs. ZenGest can support the body, the mind and the spirit and give us the ability to receive new information, new experiences, and allows us to be open to new possibilities. ZenGest is one of the top ten essential oils that is included in the Family Essentials Kit for €150 or the Home Essentials Kit with the Free Petal Diffuser for €286. It can also be purchased on its own for €50. These oils can be used in three different ways: Topically – applying them on to our skin with or without a carrier oil. Aromatically – by placing a two to three drops into a cold-water diffuser and diffusing these oils in our homes, classrooms, offices, salons or places of work and business. And the third way, internally – by adding them to your favourite food, waters, or drinks, or simply by taking one drop under the tongue daily. The oils are a natural solution to care for our needs and our family’s health needs. They can support us with many of the following that we experience from time to time, such as: Anxiety, Digestive Support, Sleep Assist, Muscle Care, Stress Buster, Depression, Grief, Energy Boost, Skin Support, Immunity Boost, Allergy Assist and so much more. You can contact me for more information on any of the above and I will be happy to assist you in your journey of health and wellbeing with dóTerra’s essential oils. For extra positivity and well-being, check out our Facebook page where we have information and videos on all dóTerra’s essential oils, including Master Brody’s Monday Night Lives which are proving extremely popular and helpful with our younger generation. Our newly addition of Caroline’s Fashion Fix every Friday will return again in the next few weeks with the Autumn Winter Collection and is very uplifting and promotes positive body attitude and wellbeing to all of us ladies with clothing from the French label Captain Tortue. Should you wish to view the catalogue, let me know and I will send it straight on to you by email.

SAN RITA WELLNESS

Welcome to San Rita Wellness weekly column…

At San Rita Wellness your self care and well being is important to us. Wellness covers a variety of areas such as eating healthily, being active and looking after ourselves both mentally and physically. One of the ways of looking after ourselves is getting a good nights sleep. But that’s probably easier said than done. Sleeping well directly affects your mental and physical health. Health experts recommend that we should try and get 7 to 9 hours sleep a night. Fall short and it can take a serious toll on your daytime energy, productivity, emotional balance, and even your weight. We can often feel moody, short tempered and reach for sugary foods to give ourselves a bit of an energy boost. Yet many of us regularly toss and turn at night, struggling to get the sleep we need. If you want to optimize your health or lose weight, getting a good night’s sleep is one of the most important things you can do. Here are some tips to help you sleep better at night. Sleep Routine - Try to go to sleep and get up at the same time every day. This helps set your body’s internal clock and optimize the quality of your sleep. Feeling drowsy - Having a heavy meal late in the evening can leave you feeling sleepy way before your bedtime. get off the couch and go for a short walk, call a friend, or get your clothes ready for the next day. Screen time - Screen time limits your dream time. Avoid bright screens within 1-2 hours of your bedtime. The blue light emitted by your phone, tablet, computer is especially disruptive. Say no to late-night television. Wind down - Have a relaxing wind down routine. Have a bath, listen to music or read a book. When it’s time to sleep, make sure the room is dark. Use heavy curtains or shades to block light from windows, or try a sleep mask. Avoid alcohol - Having a couple of drinks at night can negatively affect your sleep and hormones. Alcohol is known to cause or increase the symptoms of sleep apnea, snoring, and disrupted sleep patterns Tidy room - To optimize your bedroom environment, try to minimize external noise, light, and artificial lights from devices like alarm clocks. Make sure your bedroom is a quiet, relaxing, clean, and enjoyable place. Daily Exercise - People who exercise regularly during the daytime sleep better at night. Regular exercise also improves the symptoms of insomnia and sleep apnea and increases the amount of time you spend in the deep, restorative stages of sleep. Limit Caffeine - Caffeine stimulates your nervous system and may stop your body from naturally relaxing at night. In one study, consuming caffeine up to 6 hours before bed significantly worsened sleep quality For extra support and for weekly accountability check us out on Facebook San Rita Wellness or sanritawellness.ie for details of our “ At Home Service “ or our “ One to One Service “ Give us a call: Sandra 087 6718377 | Rita 087 1012174 Until next week, Sandra and Rita

Kerry Hurling – The Kerry hurlers had a major scare in Navan on Saturday night when it took a late point from Podge Boyle to bring Kerry into the Joe McDonagh Cup Final. The worst case scenario was Kerry to lose by more than five points, but with the game in deep injury time and down by five, Kerry won a free and up stepped Podge, a man with ice in his veins, to split the posts to secure a date in Croke Park on this Saturday evening at 5.00pm. Westmeath will provide the opposition and the game will be live on RTE 2 television and is the curtain raiser to the Leinster Hurling Championship Final, Kilkenny v Dublin. Best of Luck to Mikey & Podge Boyle and Eoin Ross, other teammates and Management in what should be a great occasion.

WINDOW ON THE PAST One hundred years ago a Truce was agreed between the British Crown Forces and the Irish Republican Army as a preliminary to ending the conflict. The Truce was agreed and signed on Friday 8 July 1921 to come into effect officially on Monday 11 July at 11am. The last shots of the War of Independence in North Kerry were fired in Tarbert just before midnight on Sunday 10 July. It was the settling of an old score. Jack Sheehan, Coilbee, Listowel a member of the Flying Column had been killed near his home while running for cover on 26 May 1921. He was a close friend and comrade in arms of Jack Ahern and Con Brosnan of the Moyvane Company. They had heard from an RIC man that the man responsible for his killing was a Black and Tan named Farnloe who was stationed in Tarbert and was boasting of his marksmanship. In his witness statement Jack Ahern wrote ‘the last night before the truce I and most of the other men from Newtownsandes who had taken part in previous attacks in Tarbert went into Tarbert armed with rifles and revolvers. We arrived in Tarbert about 10.30pm. I left about eight men outside the town but brought Con Brosnan and Dan O’Grady into the town with me. A scout there informed us that Farnloe was in Mulcahy’s pub with three or four Tans. I sent Con Brosnan and Dan O’Grady back to collect the men we had left about a quarter of a mile outside the town. I was now on my own. In the mean-time the Tans started to leave the pub. I was in the open street near the pub on the opposite corner and had to think quickly what to do. There were four of them so I opened fire with the revolver on the four Tans. They did not return the fire but ran for the barracks and opened fire from there. but by then I was on my way to join my friends. This action took place one hour before midnight on the eve of the truce.’ (end quote). Jack Ahern and his comrades returned to their billets unscathed while the two wounded Tans, Farnloe and Dent were removed to Limerick hospital the following day later making a full recovery. 61 people, combatants and civilians had been killed nation-wide over that weekend. Mulcahy’s public house is the residence of Seamus Enright to-day. SEANFHOCAIL NA SEACHTAINE ‘I gcosa an chú a bhíonn a chuid’ - a greyhound’s worth is in its legs. ‘Chrom Dia an droim don ualach’ - God made the back fir for the burden. ‘Is deacair ceann crionn a chur ar cholainn óg’ - Its hard to put a wise head on young shoulders.

KILFLYNN KERRY SENIOR HURLERS BOOK A PLACE IN THE JOE MCDONAGH CUP FINAL Joe McDonagh Cup Group B Round 3: Meath 0-28 Kerry 1-21 It really came down to the wire, as Kerry booked a place in the Joe McDonagh Cup Final on Saturday 17th July 5.00p.m in Croke Park; despite a four-point loss to Meath at Páirc Tailteann on Saturday 10th July. In the end a late-late Padraig Boyle pointed free, coupled with their strong goals tally throughout the competition; proved vital to secure a showdown with Westmeath at GAA Headquarters. With the same number of league points (one win each) and the same scoring difference (+4); and even the same number of total scores (3-45 to 2-48); it came down to the number of goals scored to ensure Kerry and not Down advanced to the decider. The Crotta Club was represented by Tomas O’Connor (Corner back), Shane Nolan (Mid field) (0-02), Barry Mahony and Donal Hunt were also members of the Kerry panel. We wish the players and their mentors all the best in the Joe McDonagh Cup Final. Most impressive performances came from Dylan Kate Tracey & Sophie oFlaherty 4th in Long Jump and missed out by the shortest of margins for bronze. Also impressive were Jeremiah Buckley & Owen Og Galvin 5th in Long Jump and 7th in 500m. Ruby Kate Boyle & Sophie oFlaherty 5th in 500m Girls U10. Chloe oFlaherty & Isabella McEnery were 6th in Girls U11 60m. Other athletes that took part were Aideen Duffy, Isabelle Larkin, Jerry Brick, Eamon Kennelly, Matthew and Donnacha Quilter. Its competition season, events are coming fast across all age groups, it’s the time of year to be fast, strong and competitive. Athletic life is returning to normal. This week we had the youngest to our masters competing in Munster and County events. First up was County Junior, Senior and Masters T&F last Wednesday in An Riocht. Fair play to Kerry Athletics for hosting a good night of athletics with events being held in time and a very efficient program held across all ages. A superb performance from the Lynch household brought home 3 Gold and 1 Silver medal with 2 impressive PBs. Megan won double Gold in the 100 and 200m at junior level and has really kicked on to some very strong performances over the past three weeks with a gritty PB in the 200m. Kevin was not to be out done with a super run in the 100m at senior level claiming silver plus a potential master O45 record in the 100m which is waiting on national ratification. Kevin also showed his prodigy in winning the Senior 400m in a great battle up the home straight in 53 secs in the last race of the night. Padriac McCarthy made sure that Killocrim was awash with gold medals with Junior Gold in the Shot Putt and Discus and a PB in the discus to show his continual development. Lios Tuathail AC had impressive performances in the Junior Men 100m with Sean Mahony blowing the field away with an impressive Gold medal and PB in 11.32 sec. Just behind in PB central were Louis o Connell in 11.74 secs and Brendan oLeary in 12.15 secs. Within 20 mins both Louis and Brendan produced another PB in the 200m. Very impressive performances from these three guys and true reward for the effort put in. Rachel Neylon won Gold in her first race in the Junior 400m in an impressive time of 62 secs and Rachel also qualified comfortably for the 100m junior final but unfortunately did not complete to show her great ability. DUAGH HURLING

Division 3 County League: Duagh V Parnells B. Wednesday 7th July. Match report: Duagh hosted Parnell’s B in their second game of the County league. Duagh went into an early lead with the very reliable Eoin Kelly firing over a numbers of frees. Parnell’s equally accurate freetaker Paul Daly kept them in touch with Duagh. Duagh lead by one point at the water break. Shortly after the restart, Stephen Ryan score the only goal of the game for Parnell’s, after a goal mouth scramble. Duagh rallied from this and a number of points from Eoin Kelly and a superb point from play from Diarmuid Ryan, left the half time score, Duagh 0-9 - Parnells 1-6. The second half started with rain falling, making conditions tough, but saw Duagh take control with the Duagh defence keeping Parnell’s scoreless up to the second water break. Tim Quirke at centre back lead this defence ably assisted by Brendan Mahony, Micheal Kennedy Pat Walsh, Paudie Mc Namara and Shane O’Driscoll. Points from play from Daragh O’Connor, Diarmuid Ryan and Eoin Kelly put Duagh in front by 3 points going into the water break. Duagh’s Micheal Kirby was the driving force for them during the second half. Parnell’s rallied after the break and a number of needless fouls and soft frees let Parnell’s back into the game. Kevin Hanaffin had taken over the free taking duties for Parnell’s, but he was equally as accurate. Duagh only managed one point during this period, leaving the final score Duagh 0-13 -Parnell’s 1-10. Duagh team: Shane Bannerton, Pat Walsh, Shane O’Driscoll, Micheal Kennedy, Paudie Mc Namara, Tim Quirke, Brendan Mahony, Micheal Kirby, Daragh O’Connor(1pt), Conor O’Brien, Eoin Kelly (10 pts, 9 f’s) Neilo Keane, Dirmuid Ryan (2pts), Kieran Lucey, Sean Keane. Subs: Jack Dillon, Cormac Phillips, Daragh Lynch, Brian O’Connell.

FINUGE GAA

The senior team ended up with no game this week as their rescheduled game with Knocknagoshel had to be further postponed due to unforeseen circumstances. Next up for the senior team will be Scartaglin at home on Sunday. The U20s played Beale on Saturday and suffered a heavy defeat at home. Our U15s maintained their winning streak with a win over Dromid/Waterville on the score line D/W 3-04 to Finuge’s 3-12 . The long journey down south was well worth it for these boys as they sit joint top of the table and have secured a semi-final place. The semi is due to be played this Wednesday and Knock/ Brosna provide the opposition. Best of luck boys in this!! The U13s are another team on a roll and kept their winnings ways with a win away to Duagh on Sunday. It finished on the score line Duagh 1-05 to Finuge’s 2-12. This puts the boys second in the table and will see promotion in phase two. Well done boys and best of luck in phase two!! Our U11s played Knocknagoshel in Finuge in the last round of phase one. This turned into a great battle between the two teams. Well done to all involved and thanks to Knocknagoshel for travelling. We had 20 players togged out on the night. This team also played Beale earlier in the week as the original fixture had been postponed. We had 18 boys on the night and everybody got lots of football in. Thank you to Beale for hosting. A well-earned rest this week ahead of phase two for this team! The U9s played Beale in Finuge. Well done to all the boys and girls who lined out, with some fantastic displays all round. The coaches were very impressed with the skills shown! This week is a well-earned rest! The U7s had a break week but the training continues - keep working on the skills boys and girls!! Well done to Christy Killeen on his article published in last week’s Kerryman which charts the history of our club. This is a very detailed and informative read, well done Christy!

Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked many favours.

Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked many favours.

This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your own favour not mine. Amen.
