LAUNCH OF THE TARGETED YOUTH EMPLOYABILITY SUPPORT INITIATIVE
The Listowel Family Resource Centre is delighted to announce the launch of the Targeted Youth Employability Support Initiative (TYESI). The purpose of this project is to identify and support young people within the ages of 16 to 24, who are currently in no form of education, employment or training. There are a range of factors which may lead people to avail of this service. These might include being conventionally unemployed, rural or social isolation, having negative educational experiences, lack of motivation or being disengaged from society, lack of financial support or mental health challenges. This project is completely non-judgemental and looks to meet young people where they are in order to help them move forward in their lives. It will also look to identify any barriers to this happening. This service is being offered to young people not in employment, training or education in the Greater Listowel catchment area. It is important for us to ensure that schools and services in the area are aware of the project and what we can offer to help young people develop their personal and professional skills. Listowel Family Resource Centre will also create a network of services with local organisations in employment, education and training to empower the young people to be active and participate to benefit themselves going forward. The aim of the project is to help young people build and develop life skills, self-esteem and confidence. We aim to do this by developing their social, emotional and personal skills and supporting young people to engage with existing support services. This project is liaising with the various organisations in the catchment area of Listowel and North Kerry. Such organisations include the likes of North East West Kerry Development (NEWKD), Kerry Diocesan Youth Service (KDYS), Children and Young Peoples Service Committees (CYPSC), Youthreach, MTU Tralee and Kerry Education and Training Board (ETB). Some of the services that are provided by the various organisations include accredited training, progression pathways and mentoring supports. Some services also include an outreach service if there is a transport barrier to those who wish to participate. By linking in with these various organisations, we can ensure that the individuals who avail of this new service can obtain the best possible training outcomes for their future. Listowel Family Resource Centre (FRC) is one of 121 FRCs nationwide under the Family Resource Centre Programme and is responsible to the Child and Family Agency (TUSLA). The FRC programme is Ireland’s largest family support programme, delivering universal and targeted services and supports to all individuals, families, and communities. Listowel Family Resource Centre is one of 12 family resource centres in Kerry in this programme, along with two others that are locally funded. This project is funded by Kerry ETB through the Targeted Youth Employability Support Initiative administered by the Department of Children, Equality, Disability, Integration and Youth.
KERRY RESEARCHER WINS MTU COMMERCIAL INVENTION OF THE YEAR
Kerry based researcher, Dr Joanna Tierney from the Dept of Biological and Pharmaceutical Sciences and Shannon ABC, Munster Technology University (MTU) Kerry Campus was presented with the MTU Commercial Invention of Year 2021 at this year’s virtual ceremony. The MTU Invention of the Year awards is an annual event that takes place as part of Innovation and Enterprise month at MTU. The awards recognise and acknowledge the work and effort that staff have put into their invention declarations during 2021 and to encourage researchers to engage in the research commercialisation process. MTU researchers submitted 20 invention disclosure forms (IDFs) to the Innovation and Enterprise Office during this time period. The IDFs were judged by an external panel - Dr Declan Weldon, Director of Innovation and Engagement from University of Glasgow and Dr Paul Dillon, Director of Technology Transfer Office, from University of Limerick. Each submission was judged based on several criteria: scientific merit, innovative factor, development stage, potential benefit to society, marketability and patentability. Ireland Commercialisation Fund, earned her the award. Coccidiosis is caused by Eimeria protozoan parasites and is an important disease in poultry and neonates in animal farming. It causes diarrhoea, weight loss, emaciation, and in extreme cases, death. The invention employs natural, anti-parasitic, anti-microbial, immune-modulating and anti-oxidant activities as an alternative to the current industry treatments in use today for coccidiosis control. Speaking about the award, Dr Tierney said “I’m delighted to receive this award, and I’m grateful to Enterprise Ireland, Science Foundation Ireland and MTU for their support over the last few years. I’d like to thank my colleagues at Shannon Applied Biotechnology Centre, the Department of Biological and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and the research office team in MTU. I would like to acknowledge and thank the people who I’ve worked with over the years on this project; Drs Michelle Ryan, Joanna Przyborska and David Kelly. Our work on developing an alternative coccidiosis control solution is critically important as poultry is set to become the world’s most consumed meat protein and poultry producers face increased pressure to control this parasite disease which contributes to significant economic loss as reflected in poor weight gains and reduced feed conversion.” The Commercial Invention of Year award was presented to Dr Joanna Tierney recently by the President of MTU, Professor Maggie Cusack. Another award was presented at the ceremony for MTU Technical Invention of the Year 2021. This was awarded to the CAPPA (Centre for Advanced Photonics and Process Analysis) project, PIXCAN. BALLYBUNION TIDY TOWNS READY FOR ADJUDICATION
In the run up to the deadline for the 2022 adjudication application, Ballybunion TidyTowns has been busy around town trying to finish a few last minute details on this year’s projects. One of TidyTowns’ large projects for 2022 is the placement of the remaining heritage and points of interest signs on the Cliff Walk. The signs were designed, developed and purchased several years ago and have been in storage waiting to be installed at relevant spots along the cliff walk. Unfortunately, they have not been able to be placed in their intended location. However, they do contain lots of interesting information and cultural fact about things visitors see as they amble along the path. We felt the sign deserved being displayed for the information they contain. So you will find them at the north end of the walk behind the crash barrier on Nun’ Beach Road. We hope everyone enjoys the details they contain. We hope these projects and others along with the maintenance work we do will garner us more points to add to our ever increasing total. Your help in getting the town ready for the adjudicators is critical to our score this year. We hope ever will tend to their premise, adjacent roadway and footpath and see to it all is in good order as needed. Community wide tidiness will go a long way to making a good impression on the judges who will be here anytime starting the first full week of June.

Martina Devlin, an award-winning columnist for the Irish Independent and podcaster for Dublin City of Literature #CityofBooks, has delivered a new novel based on the life of Edith Somerville of ‘Somerville and Ross’ fame - authors of The Irish R.M. In this work, set during the turbulent period of Irish Independence 1921-22, Somerville finds herself at a crossroads. Her position as a member of the Ascendancy is perilous as she struggles to keep her family home, Drishane House in West Cork, while others are burned out. After years in a successful writing partnership with Violet Martin, Edith continues to write after her partner’s death, comforted in the belief they continue to connect through automatic writing and seances. Against a backdrop of Civil War politics and lawlessness erupting across the country via IRA flying columns, people across Ireland are forced to consider where their loyalties lie. In Edith, Devlin limns a vivid historical context in this story of proto-feminist Edith Somerville courageously trying to keep home and heart in one piece.

Would families with family graves in these Cemeteries please ensure that their family graves are clean and tidy ahead of these masses. Thank you. THANK YOU JOHN A huge THANK YOU must be extended to local man John O’Shea who recently hung up his stremming machine after spending 31years as grounds man and caretaker of Lislaughtin Abbey. John was a genius at his work and kept the Cemetery in mint condition year in year out. People that visited the historical building were always held in awe as to the mint conditions of the grounds and surrounds that John had maintained on a regular basis. He was also registrar of the graves and had a wonderful memory of where nearly all family graves were situated. Thankfully, he will continue to hold the position of registrar and will be responsible for recording the burials in the Cemetery as he has been in years gone by. John on behalf of the Community we are sincerely grateful for your wonderful work and hope that you have many years of happiness and health. Mile Buiochas. Footnote: Indeed John’s work has been very sorely missed already as the grass in the cemetery has gone shamefully out of control it has become so high that one can just barely see the headstones. This is a shame considering the mint condition that it had been kept in under the watchful eye of the now retired John O’Shea. The Ivy on the wall along the pathway is also growing out of control and needs to be cut back before it will cover the pathway shortly. I have spoken to our local Councillor Mike Foley about this and he has received assurances from the Engineer in charge that the Cemetery will be cleaned up in the coming weeks. It is dangerous now to walk in amongst the graves as one would not see the grave markers, kerbs, or railings and could fall resulting in serious injury. Hopefully, this matter can be resolved and the cemetery restored and maintained to the mint condition that we were all used to. BEREAVEMENTS Over the last number of weeks the Community has been plunged into deep sadness and grief with the passing of a number of very highly respected and lovely people whose passing has created a huge void in the lives of their loving family and friends. As time passed so quickly I did not get the opportunity to include a number of bereavements unfortunately, this was not intentional. It will not be possible to include all in this week’s edition (as space will not allow) however over the next few weeks I hope to catch up and write on all the sad passing of such wonderful people. On Tuesday 10th May last the sad news came through of the passing of Margaret Rice (née Walsh) R.I.P. of Blanemore. Margaret was born in the townland of Dromtrasna in the West Limerick town of Abbeyfeale. Margie or Marie as she was more affectionately known met and fell in love and eventually married her beloved husband John. They settled and lived happily on the family farm in Blanemore, where they welcomed two daughters Kathleen and Patricia (Collins). Working hard on the family farm was no workload to any of the family as they all worked hard in making their model farm a huge success. However, their lives were dealt a severe blow with the sudden passing of a dear husband and father the late John R.I.P. some years ago. But Margaret and her daughters continued the hard work and maintained the lovely farm that
18
they were so proud of. A very kind and quiet woman Margaret was also a great mother and wonderful housewife whose cooking skills were the envy of all who were welcomed to the family home where you would be assured a wonderful welcome and of course a welcoming cup of tea and some of her lovely cooked or baked treats. Margaret’s health took an unexpected turn for the worst on Saturday May 7th which resulted in her being admitted to K.U.H. On the following day Sunday where she sadly passed from this life on Tuesday May 10th Margaret is predeceased by her husband John Rice, brothers Connie Walsh (Abbeyfeale) and Patrick Walsh (Tralee). She is sadly missed by her loving daughters Kathleen Rice and Patricia Collins (Asdee). Her adored grandchildren, Cillian, John and Sophie, son-in-law Eddie Joe Collins, sister Helen McEnery (Newcastlewest), nieces, nephews, sister-in-law Joan Walsh (Tralee), family relatives, neighbours and friends to whom we extend our deepest sympathies. Margaret’s body lay in repose at Lynch’s Funeral Home, Main Street Ballylongford on Thursday 12th of May from 5pm to 7pm. Her cortege departed from her residence on Friday morning to arrive at St. Teresa’s Church Ballydonoghue for 11am Requiem Mass followed by interment afterwards in Galey Cemetery. May her Gentle Soul Rest In Peace. On Thursday 19th May came the shocking news of the passing of Gabe O’Connor R.I.P. of Kilcolman Asdee and late of Knopogue, Ballyduff a member of a highly respected and well known family Gabe was known far and wide. Michael which not many knew was his official Christian name, was more affectionately known as Gabe, who created and left a marvellous impression and indeed formed many friendship’s with people he met through his wonderful life which ended all too soon for both his family and huge circle of friends. A man who had a marvellous sense of humour and wit and often filled with roguery left a lasting impression with whoever had the pleasure in meeting him. He was known the length and breadth of Kerry and West Limerick through his work with Kerry Agribusiness in his duties as an artic truck driver which often saw him either delivering items or collecting the milk amongst the farming community in these areas for nearly forty years. He also was involved in the Horse and Pony Races in Littor and more recently with the Asdee Vintage. He enjoyed all social gatherings and loved to mingle and talk with everybody and no matter what the conversation was about Gabe would always put you in good form regardless. A wonderful family man who prided on his family who are heartbroken and who will miss him terribly we extend our deepest sympathies to his beloved wife Noma (Long), his adored children Gerard and Martina, his cherished grandchildren, Rory, Evie, Jack, Katie and Tommy, daughter in law Mairead and son in law Mike Browne, sisters Eileen, Catherine and Mary, brothers Patsy, Sean and Seamus, godchildren Gina, Siobhan and Enda, sisters in law, brothers in law, nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, relatives, neighbours and wide circle of friends. Gabe is Predeceased by his parents Joan and Rory O’Connor and beloved nephew Eoin Griffin. Gabe’s body lay in repose at Lynch’s Funeral Home, Main St, Ballylongford on Sunday evening May 22nd from 5pm to 8pm. Removal from his residence in Kilcolman to St Mary’s Church Asdee on Monday May 23rd arriving for 11am requiem mass followed by interment afterwards in Kilconly Cemetery. May his Gentle Soul Rest In Peace. (Will update more next week) LENAMORE ROVERS Congratulations to all involved with the Lenamore Rovers Soccer Club who recently won the Charleville Cheese sponsored Division 2B Kerry District League Final Replay after a very convincing win over Killorglin C. Senior Football: Our Senior football team played out a draw, 1 – 8 each, in the Credit Union sponsored County Senior Football League Division 5 with Waterville at Ballyduff on Sunday last. The locals missed a lot of chances, but the point earned from this draw earns them a place at the top of the table on 12 points. Their next game is away to Finuge this coming weekend. Time to be confirmed. Joe McDonagh Cup: The Kerry senior Hurling team came up agonisingly short in a marvellous game at Croke Park on Saturday last against Antrim in the Joe McDonagh Cup final. Down by ten points at one stage, they clawed their way back to lose by a single score. However only for a very questionable refereeing decision a draw would have been a fair result. Podge Boyle bagged 2–11 in an awesome display while Mikey Boyle and Eoin Ross did well in a back line that was under a lot of pressure. They now play Wexford in Austin Stack Park on Saturday next with the time to be confirmed. Everyone should be in Austin Stack Park on Saturday to support this team. They really deserve it. The Ballyduff under 15 team travelled to Croke park on Saturday to support their heroes and after the game Podge posted a message on the under 15 What’s app account thanking the boys for supporting them. It was a message that was deeply appreciated by the under 15 team. Thanks Podge.

JOE MCDONAGH CUP FINAL For the third straight year the Kerry hurlers contested the Joe McDonagh Cup Final, on Saturday 4th June and it was another tough day in Croke Park for Kerry as they lose to Antrim on a final scoreline of Antrim 5-22 Kerry 4-24 A game that they were chasing right from the start with the concession of 2 goals inside the first 10 minutes and they trailed a very sharp Antrim side at half time by 10 points. Kerry to their credit gave a much better second half performance and had the Antrim backs in trouble anytime the ball was played into the inside line, with substitute Jordan Conway lighting up the Kerry attack with two second half goals, Kerry as they have done many times over the season kept going and kept pushing to the end and had a late late goal from Padraig Boyle in what proved to be the last puck of the game. Both teams now move on to play the Preliminary All Ireland Quarter Finals with Antrim playing Cork and Kerry taking on Wexford at Austin Stack’s Park on Saturday 11th June at 2.00p.m. The Crotta club was represented on the panel by Sean Weir (Wing back), Jordan Conway came on as sub on and scored 2-02, Cillian Trant and James Sheehan. Fossa did not prove to be a happy hunting ground for our seniors on Saturday evening. Trailing by 0-8 to 0-3 at the interval, we had failed to fire in the first half. We were up against it on the changeover as our opponents dictated the terms and conditions, adding further points. We came unstuck against a slick Fossa outfit as the final score read 0-16 to 0-5. Ranking sixth on the table, with four wins from seven games, we play host to Ardfert in Páirc de Staic on Sunday at 2 o’clock. We travel to Keel on June 19th and to Cromane the following weekend. Our final round County League, Division 4,game will be against Austin Stacks B. Another spectacular day at our annual Golf Classic on Bank Holiday Monday. Intermittent rain did not dampen spirits as players enjoyed a great day out on the idyllic links of the Cashen Course. Winners on the day were Patrick Ryan, Mike Ryan, Gearóid Costelloe and Paul Collins. In second place were Noel Nash, Ignatius O’Brien, Donald Bennet and Aidan O’Neill; while in third place were John Condron, John Quirke, Kevin O’Callaghan and Paul Roche. Prize for ‘Nearest the Pin’ went to Julian Lyons and Zack Devlin won the ‘Longest Drive’. A massive thank you to sponsors, teams and everyone who made this such an enjoyable and successful event. Special thanks to Ballybunion Golf Club for hosting our classic. The numbers drawn on Monday night for this week’s Beale Lotto were 8, 9, 12 and 28. FINUGE GAA
SENIORS: The lads were unlucky to go down by the minimum to Moyvane in a game played Friday night in Moyvane - final score Finuge 1-09, Moyvane 1-10. Next up in round 9 of the county league is a home game with Ballyduff. This will be played Friday at 8pm in Finuge - please support! U15: The big day finally arrived last Saturday when the lads travelled to Mallow to represent the club & county in the Feile competition. First up was Castlehaven of Cork and straight in at the deep end! The boys battled hard but went down on the scoreline Finuge 2-05 to Castlehavens 4-09. Second game was a tough tight affair against Western Gaels of Clare. After a battle the boys came out victorious on the scoreline Finuge 1-07, Western Gaels 2-02. This setup the third game as a very important one - the winner would go into the Cup final. Our lads were going well by now and came out on top by 3-10 to 1-05 against Monagea of Limerick. This put Finuge into the Cup final against Castlehaven. A tough battle ensued but unfortunately our lads could not match the West Cork lads and the final score saw Castlehaven winners on 1-09 to 0-02. Everyone in the club is very proud of how the lads played and represented the club & county! A big thank you to everyone who helped along the way, especially

Due to injuries and unavailability of players on the night the game was played 11 a side. Tarbert started strongly and scored first from a Paudie Finucane goal and maintained the lead to the end of the game. Further goals from Brendan O’Leary and John Coolahan and points from Evan Collins, Adam Enright, Paudie Finucane and Dara Heaphy saw Tarbert lead 3-04 to 1-04 at half time. NORTH KERRY GAA
Minor North Kerry Division 1 Final. Moyvane 2.16 (22) Listowel Emmets 3.11 (20)
Moyvane v Listowel Emmets On a cool dry evening in Coolard, these two young promising North Kerry teams took to the field, Moyvane captained by Jerh Brosnan, and Listowel Emmets captained by Thomas Kelly. Mike Hennessy (Ballyduff) was the man in the middle and his task was tough.
first 5 minutes, but it was Moyvane’s Danny Lyons who opened the scoreboard with a point from a free, which was rapidly followed by a goal from Jerh Brosnan. With Moyvane now in the lead and Listowel Emmets confidence on the ball starting to grow, Aaron Carey opened their score line with a point from a free. Thomas Kelly, Listowel Emmets captain must have covered every blade of grass in Coolard along with Moyvane’s Patrick O’ Connor. Their strength and determination never failed throughout the game. Listowel made a steady comeback towards the end of the first half, with scores coming from Aaron Kennelly, Conor Sweeney, and Aidan Chute. With Rob Heffernan hit the post in the 28th minute, leading Moyvane to pick up the loose ball, take the advantage leading to a score from a free from Jamie Moloney. Half time score Moyvane 1.05 Listowel Emmets 0.05. 40 seconds into the second half Darragh O’ Keeffe kicked another point for Moyvane, followed quickly with a point for Emmets. Aaron Kennelly, towering at midfield for Listowel Emmets was cool and calm on the ball throughout, played as much ball as he could into the forward line. 5 minutes into the second half Aidan Chute rattled the back of the Moyvane net, leaving the score now at Moyvane 1.06 and Listowel Emmets 1.07. Listowel Emmets were beginning to come alive. After the Aidan Chute goal another Listowel goal was quickly followed by Conor Sweeney. Moyvane 1.06 Listowel Emmets 2.07. Moyvane responded with a point from a free tipped over by Jamie Moloney. But the towering Emmets midfielder had other ideas and he clipped the Moyvane goalkeeper to score another goal for Listowel Emmets. In the 13th minute Moyvane swapped their goalie for an outfield position. Kiegan Moloney was replaced by Bobby O’ Riordan, and Kiegan Moloney then replaced Diarmuid Og O’ Connor. With words of encouragement coming from both management sides, Emmets and Moyvane stepped up their game, their determination, willpower, and resilience was nonstop. From here on both teams dug deep never giving up. With scores coming from Kiegan Moloney and a penalty awarded to Moyvane, Jamie Moloney rattled the back of the Emmet’s net. Moyvane behind by 1 point in the 23rd minute of the second half. Moyvane 2.09 Listowel Emmets 3.07. Scores for both teams eventually levelled the sides, now resulting in extra time. At the start of extra time Moyvane were now 2.11 Listowel Emmets 3.08. Yet again the fast-paced Jamie Moloney from Moyvane opened the scoreboard with a point from play, quickly followed by Darragh O’Keeffe with another few beauties over the bar. Listowel scored one point in the first half of extra time. At the end of the first half of extra time Moyvane 2.15 Listowel Emmets 3.09. Both clubs fought hard for the remaining 10 minutes with all they had to offer, with scores coming from Danny Lyons Moyvane and Robert Heffernan Listowel Emmets. Moyvane won after 90 minutes of football on a score line of Moyvane 2.16 (22) Listowel Emmets 3.11 (20). Comfort me in all my difficulties through the great favour thou didst enjoy when Our Saviour lodged in thy house. I beseech thee to have definite pity in regard to the favour I ask (Mention favour). Intercede for my family that we may always be provided for in all our necessities. I ask thee St. Martha to overcome the dragon which thou didst cast at thy feet. Say one Our Father and three Hail Marys with a lighted candle every Tuesday and the above prayer made known with the intentions of spreading devotion to St. Martha. This miraculous Saint grants every thing before the Tuesdays are ended. No matter how difficult. B.S.
NOVENA TO ST. MARTHA St. Martha, I resort to thee and to thy petition and faith. I offer up to thee this light which I shall burn every Tuesday for nine Tuesdays. B.S.

Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked many favours.
This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your own favour not mine. Amen.
