SHANNON ABC SECURES €700,000 FOR CAPITAL EQUIPMENT TO SUPPORT IRISH COMPANIES

Shannon ABC, a Research Centre and Technology Gateway based in Limerick Institute of Technology (LIT) and Munster Technological University (MTU), has secured significant funding from the Enterprise Ireland Capital Equipment call for new equipment. The funding, won by three separate applications, will be used to purchase equipment to help support R&D activities with Irish enterprises. At the announcement of the €6m fund, the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Leo Varadkar TD said, “Great things happen when companies collaborate with third level institutions. Recent data show that companies which collaborate with our universities have double the turnover of those that don’t. Third level institutions benefit too, by getting to work with creative, business-minded entrepreneurs, working on solutions to real life problems. Congratulations to all the successful applicants, I look forward to seeing the fruits of this collaborative effort.” The equipment to be purchased includes: • Sample Preparation and Extraction Suite (Super-critical fluid extraction, Combinatory Pressurised Liquid – Dispersive Solid Phase Extraction Module, microwave digestor, micro-plate reader). Dr Lena Madden (€250,000) • Environmental Monitoring Suite (Elemental Analyser, Greenhouse Gas analyser) Mr Patrick Quille, Dr Oscar Goni (€250,000) • Photosynthetic growth chambers (upgrades to current chambers, GEN1000-IN incubation chamber (new), GEN2000-SH short-height multi-tiered chamber, PGC-Flex-2 Tier intermediate-scale chamber) Dr Peter Downey, Dr Siobhan Moane (€200,000). These grant awards bring to €2.5m the amount of funding secured by Shannon ABC for capital equipment in the last three years. Brid McElliott, VP for Research, Enterprise and External Engagement at MTU said: “MTU are delighted that Shannon ABC have secured this funding for new equipment. This achievement provides a great opportunity for Shannon ABC, through both MTU and LIT, to build on their excellent industry engagement track record. I wish to acknowledge the support of Enterprise Ireland in facilitating the acquisition of this equipment which offers Shannon ABC additional business development opportunities, ensuring its continued relevance to the industry it serves” Dr Liam Brown, Vice President for Research, Enterprise and Innovation at LIT said, “These successful equipment applications will significantly enhance our research capabilities and thus enable Shannon ABC to provide further support to Irish companies. This is particularly important in light of LIT’s recent designation as a technological university in conjunction with AIT and the centrality that research will contribute to our new technological university - TUS: Midlands Midwest”. Shannon ABC is funded as a Technology Gateway by Enterprise Ireland.

FÍS NA HÓIGE MOVIE REVIEW BEAUTY AND THE BEAST

This week Fís na hÓige member, Maeve Quilter, is reviewing the movie; “Beauty and the Beast”. If you’re looking for a family movie to watch, keep an eye on this page where Fís na hÓige will be reviewing the very best movies for you to watch. ‘Beauty and the Beast’ Directed by Gary Trousdale and Kirk Wise, is an old classic film by Disney Pixar. First released in 1991. Even though it was released almost 30 years ago the storyline is still relevant today. It’s beautiful idyllic setting opens up your eyes to a colourful enchanting film. ‘Beauty and the Beast’ is a film that shows that attraction to a person is more about now the person makes you feel than the looks. The main characters Belle and the Beast, lived 2 very different lives. Prince Adam (the Beast) was cursed to a beast like form by an enchantress who saw no love in his arrogant heart for others. The only way Prince Adam could turn back into human form, is to fall in love or show love and compassion for others, and for them to show it back before the last Petal falls off the rose, which would bloom until his twenty first birthday. But who could ever fall in love with a Beast? Belle, a bookworm who dreams more for her life than this provincial village that she lives in. Goes on an adventure to find her father who went missing through the woods on his way to an inventor competition, she follows his tracks and it leads her to this massive castle where her dad was taken captive by the Beast, Belle shows loyalty when she sacrifices herself for her father and the Beast lets him go. Belle and the Beast are living in this massive castle all to themselves as the Beast tries to show compassion and love, while Belle tries to figure the Beast. Will Belle fall in love with the Beast? And will the Beast ever find out how to love? I really enjoyed this classical film. This is more than just about the story line, but it is also portraying a beautiful music aspect. I would really recommend this Disney film for families to watch especially if your children have a very broad imagination.

CAROLINE’S DÓTERRA ESSENTIAL OILS CAROLINE’S POD OF POSITIVITY Welcome to our weekly column and our Pod of Positivity. It is here you will find little tips, tools and information that help to maintain a life of health, wellness, love, and gratitude while incorporating dóTerra’s essential oils into your daily routine. The Sun is shining high in the sky – But the Pollen is high too? Over the course of the week, we have been blessed with fabulous sunshine and many have dropped tools and taken advantage of trips to the beach while others have simply enjoyed the sunshine out in the backyard. However, while the sun may be shining high in the sky, the pollen forecast is also extremely high, especially grass and weed pollen.

LEE STRAND WISH TIM & SEAN ALL THE BEST IN THE IRISH U18 TEAM

Lee Strand is delighted to continue supporting Tralee Imperials once again this year with the sponsorship of their U18/20 National Cup jersey. At the launch Lee Strand welcomed two of their key players Tim & Sean Pollman-Daamen who were selected for the Irish Under 18 team and will play in Levice, Slovakia in August. Speaking at the launch John Dowling, Tralee Imperials Chairman stated “I would like to thank Lee Strand for their continued support of our club and particularly their recent sponsorship of our Under 18/20 National Cup jerseys. All of the boys are really looking forward to wearing the new jerseys, once we get back on the court this season. Lee Strand’s sponsorship of basketball goes way back to the 70’s when they sponsored the super league ladies team here in Tralee. With Tralee Warriors now a well established men’s team, work is ongoing within our club to bring a super league ladies team back to the town and it’s only with continued loyal support from businesses like Lee Strand that this might be possible.

How can we manage Pollen and Allergies? Here is your solution from Caroline’s Pod of Positivity - it is pure, it is natural and it is from the World’s leader in essential oils that now have a base in Blarney Business Park in Cork – DóTerra!

We are very proud as a club of Sean and Tim’s achievement in making the Irish under 18 team. This is the lads second Irish team having competed two years ago with the Irish under 16 team in Montenegro. The lads will play this year in Slovakia in August. We wish them and the team well, we will be watching online and are looking forward to seeing them back home playing with Tralee Imperials under 20 national cup team next season.”

The word ‘dóTerra’ means ‘Gift of the Earth’ and these essential oils are a natural solution for you and your family’s health and wellbeing. We have a clever Trio Kit of Lemon, Peppermint and Lavender in 5ml size bottles, containing 95 x drops of pure essential oil which acts as a natural antihistamine to support your body with pollen and allergy season.

Pictured at the launch of Tralee Imperial’s new U18/20 National Cup jersey sponsored by Lee Strand are James Sugrue, Plant Manager Lee Strand, Gearoid Linnane, CEO Lee Strand, Tim and Sean Pollman-Daamen, Tralee Imperials U18/20 head coach David Leahy and Paul O’Connor U16 head coach. These trio of essential oils can be taken internally as they come directly from the plant source and can be rubbed behind your ears, on to your wrist points, the back of the neck and under the nose to provide relief from pollen and hay fever symptoms. I diffuse two to three drops of each in our home every day in dóTerra’s cold-water petal diffuser when pollen is high, and I would also have these on standby to drink in a small amount of water to provide instant and soothing relief. Each one of these dóTerra oils have many other different uses and are fantastic to ease head tension, calm feelings of anxiety and stress, help us to get a restful night’s sleep and they taste gorgeous when added to baking recipes. I love to add Peppermint to my morning coffee because it gives me a real energy boost and a great start to my day! The Trio Kit retails at €30 and is ‘must have’ for everyone, especially if one is suffering from allergies when pollen is high, and you can reach me on the number below to order your dóTerra Trio Kit. DóTerra’s essential oils can be used in three different ways: Topically – applying them to your skin with or without a carrier oil. Aromatically – by placing two to three drops into a cold-water diffuser and diffusing them in your homes, classrooms, offices, salons, or places of work / business. The third way to use the oils is internally – by adding them to your favourite food, waters, or drinks, or simply by putting one drop under the tongue daily.

LISTOWEL TIDY TOWNS - LOCAL COMPETITIONS

The oils are a natural solution to care for your needs and your family’s health needs. They can support you with many of the following that you may experience from time to time, such as: Anxiety, Digestive Support, Sleep Assist, Muscle Care, Stress Buster, Depression, Grief, Energy Boost, Skin Support, Immunity Boost, Allergy Assist and so much more. You can contact me for more information on any of the above and I will be happy to assist you in your journey of health and wellbeing with dóTerra’s essential oils.

Its full steam ahead with the Listowel Tidy Towns Local competitions and here’s a gentle reminder to get your entries in on time, as the closing date is fast approaching.

For extra positivity and well-being, check out our Facebook page where we have information and videos on all dóTerra’s essential oils, including Master Brody’s Monday Night Lives which are proving extremely popular and helpful with our younger generation. Our newly addition of Caroline’s Fashion Fix every Friday night is also very uplifting and promotes positive body attitude and wellbeing to all of us ladies with clothing from the French label Captain Tortue. Should you wish to view the Autumn/Winter 21 Catalogue, let me know and I will send it to you by email.

The Gardens competition is sponsored by the Listowel Garden Centre and should prove to be a very interesting and exciting competition this year, as many people turned to gardening throughout this terrible pandemic. Due to the severe lockdown and the restrictions that came with it people had more time on their hands and discovered the therapy and self-satisfaction that gardening can bring. The judges will certainly have a difficult time choosing one garden above the other. But you must register your garden to be included in the competition.

Until next time, I leave you with our thought for the week, ‘July is the ‘Nurture Month’ so take some time to look after You and let Yourself be nurtured with Caroline’s Pod of Positivity’. Caroline X Tel: 087 292 1292 Email: carolinedhorgan@gmail.com

Listowel Tidy Towns are inviting all estates to get involved in the competition of their suitable category. Resident associations and community spirit goes a long way. The upkeep of these estates also played a major role in Listowel being awarded the Tidiest Town in Ireland 2018 and Tidy Towns are asking to keep up the good work. This competition is sponsored by Kerry Ingredients.

However, you don’t have to have a big garden or live in an estate to get involved in the excitement. There’s also a special category for hanging baskets/window boxes and this competition is kindly sponsored by Fitzgerald Tyre/Centra/Circle K. This is always a very popular competition, attracting quite a numbers of contestants every year and this year should prove no different. To enter this year’s local competitions, please call to Oonagh at Broderick’s Pharmacy on or before Saturday July 24th. Many, many thanks to all our sponsors who never let us down year after year and whom without their sponsorship these competitions could not be held. And to Oonagh, thank you for your help very year at competition time. Your generous support is so very much appreciated. As Jackie, (PRO) says… “If you’re not in you can’t win”.

SAN RITA WELLNESS

Welcome to San Rita Wellness weekly column… We hope all is well with you this week.

Isn’t it strange where the week’s are flying by and yet we are trying to make the most of every day by doing something different rather than doing the same thing every day. You could say we do the same with our food choices too , but it’s important to remember that we need to shake things up a bit with different ideas and variety. On our San Rita Wellness plan we can easily bulk up our meals with added fruit and veg as most of these are calorie free on our plan. Fruit and vegetables are great to add colour to our meals which satisfies both our eyes and our belly. Is Lunch a challenge for you ? Are you reaching for the same thing every day like Bread, Bread and more Bread Are you actually preplanning your Lunch or deciding on the spur of the moment ? Are your Lunches filling enough ? Lunch is the one meal of the day that is most likely to be eaten away from home, making it harder to stay in control of your food choices. For example : A day trip to the beach, A picnic with some sight seeing, A day out shopping etc. Here are some tips that may help. Have a look at some lunch ideas online Make your own rolls / sandwiches to bring with you Have some chopped fruit in a container for snacking Decide to have something different every day Choose to sit, eat and enjoy your Lunch ( more mindful ) Choose filling foods such as Wholemeal breads, pasta, left over protein such as chicken or fish Plan 3 or 4 different types of lunches for over the week Another option for you if you are trying to cut down on bread would be “ BROGHIES “ . Broghies are a large popped grain type cracker often referred to as an edible bowl. They are low in carbs and calories and are also vegan friendly. You can add a variety of different toppings to them which makes them an ideal lunch or snack. They are available in your local Super Valu store in Listowel and Ballybunion. Some of these tips can help you avoid food boredom. Planning lunch in advance is a great way to ensure you get in more variety and colour and most of all leave you feeling more satisfied. Lunch is every bit as important as every other meal as it has to carry you next main meal. So that is why it’s important that it is filling and healthy in order to avoid any pitfalls during the afternoon. LANDSLIDE By Michael Wolff

Politics has given us some shocking and confounding moments but none have come close to the careening final days of Donald Trump’s presidency: the surreal stage management of his re-election campaign, his audacious election challenge, the harrowing mayhem of the storming of the Capitol and the buffoonery of the second impeachment trial. But what was really going on in the inner sanctum of the White House during these calamitous events? What did the president and his dwindling cadre of loyalists actually believe? And what were they planning?

BALLYDUFF GAA NEWS Senior Football & Hurling: Our Senior players had mixed luck at the weekend. The Senior Hurling team travelled to Kilgarvan on Friday evening and came away with a good win. Ballyduff got off to a whirlwind start with goals Darragh Goulding (2), Liam Boyle (2) and Aidan Boyle (1) left Ballyduff well ahead at halftime. Kilgarvan scored a controversial goal in which the umpire adjudged that Darragh Quinlan had stepped over the line, and even though Ballyduff protested the ref allowed the score to stand, but it did not affect the final score as Ballyduff ran out winners 5 – 14 to one 1 – 14.

Our Senior football team travelled to Tralee on Sunday and though short a number of players they put up a battling performance. Losing star player Paud Costello to injury just before halftime Ballyduff had to give way in the end. Final score Austin Stacks B 1 – 9 -v- Ballyduff 0 – 8.

FINUGE GAA

On a very hot afternoon it was Finuge that first got off the mark with two points following three early wides. Scartaglin finally got going with a goal on 13 minutes and Finuge replied with a point to make it a level game at the first water break. On the resumption Jamie Galvin added to Finuge’s tally with a pointed free, Scartaglin hit two points from frees while Pat Corridan hit two, one from a free to make it level at half time Finuge 0-06 to Scartaglin’s 1-03. Scartaglin’s full forward Shay Walsh accounted for all their first half scores. Finuge on the other hand had a lot of possession but did not make it count on the scoreboard. Scartaglin went on to score three points in the third quarter to Finuge’s two which put them a point up at the second water break and they were playing much better at this stage. However, Finuge hung in there to set up an exciting final quarter. Scartaglin lost a player to a second yellow and Finuge pushed hard to try and salvage something from the game. The game would finish with drama at both ends - Finuge hitting the post, a Jason Wallace shot for goal getting tipped over the bar, another Finuge shot saved at point blank with further shot again going out for a 45. Scartaglin kept their composure, won a penalty at the end with the kick being sent over for a point. Scartaglin closed out to win by three points 0-10 to Finuge and 1-10 to Scartaglin.

LISTOWEL PITCH N PUTT CLUB

Bob Casey Memorial Competition... Listowel comes out on top After a very tough five weeks Listowel had to win in the challenging Newmarket Pitch & Putt course and hope that Castleisland Pitch and Putt club finish third or worse on the night. With the Castleisland club leading by two points going into the final night we knew we’d have to play at our very best and hope that Castleisland would slip up. And that’s exactly what happened…. A terrific gross score from our senior player Chris Gibney 48 set the stall out for Listowel. So we now needed four Nett scores to match. Up stepped Chris Curran who shot a three under par round of 47. Our junior All Ireland winner Jake Shine was next with a nett score 44 which junior player and junior winner of the Ardnacrusha scratch cup Bobby McCarron matched and the final clubs counting nett was County intermediate Strokeplay champion Tom O’ Connor who also shot 47 nett. A total score of 230 for Listowel Pitch and Putt Club We knew that would be a very hard score to beat and the tension around the Newmarket clubhouse while the score were totted up was very tense Eventually the scores were totalled up and the Killarney’s Deerpark Pitch & Putt Club finished in second spot on the night. So where did Castleisland finish was the next question??? They came in third so total shots totalled over the five weeks had to decide this years Bob Casey’s winner. Listowel had a 14 shot cushion heading into tonight and winning tonight by another 13 shots declared Listowel Pitch & Putt club the winners of the tournament for the very first time in its 25 years existence. Club Merchandise on Sale We have new club merchandise for sale in the form of Polo’s, Half zip’s, Jackets, Club bags, bobble hats etc... Too order any plz contact Chris @ 0861292409.

Listowel Pitch & Putt Academy for under 16’s.... And our new Listowel Pitch & Putt Academy starts this Friday 16th July @ 2pm. This Friday will start with a 2 hour coaching session by county champions and all Ireland champion so plenty of experience to show the kids how too play and the rules of the game etc... This is available to non members also but they will have to pay 2 euro per child to play in the Academy.

NORTH KERRY DIV 3 FINAL

North Kerry Junior League 2021 Sponsored by Mc Carthy Insurance Listowel

Division 3 Final Castleisland Desmonds B 0-15 -v- St Senans B 3-07 A minutes silence was observed prior to the game as a mark of respect to the late Timmy Noonan, Moyvane who passed away recently Played in beautiful sunshine on Tuesday evening at the James O Sullivan Memorial, Park, Finuge. St Senans having trailed throughout the game put in a storming finish to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat and capture the Division 3 North Kerry League Cup.This was a trilling encounter all through with both teams enjoying there share of possession at various stages; but on saying that it looked as if Desmonds were that bit sharper who had Kieran Brennan causing all sorts of problems at full forward registering 7pts before the break and with veteran Barry Lynch orchestrating everything on the 40 it looked that way as St Senans although playing well enough were finding it hard to shake off their markers. Coming up to the 1st water break Desmonds led 5pts to 2pts with Con O Keeffe lofting over for Senans from long range but the first goal of the game came when Paudie Dillon goaled to level up the tie at 1-2 to 0-5. When play resumed it was Desmonds who took over winning most of the battles with their opponents and adding a further 7pts without reply from St. Senans. Half time score; Desmonds 0-12 St. Senans 1-2. Certainly it didn’t look too great for the Halfway men as Desmonds tagged on a further 2pts to extend that lead to 9pts on resumption. However St. Senans had other ideas and made a number of substitutions that seemed to spur them on no end. Really Desmonds looked a tired team at this stage and things weren’t happening for them with their scoring drying up and only 3pts to offer during the second half. Fair dues to St. Senans they stuck at it and another goal from Thomas Dillon and a lovely point from substitute Gavin Parker narrowed the margin to a mere 2pt game with over 5mts left for play. Desmonds were struggling to get the ball up field and it took a super point blank save from their keeper Dylan Brown to deny the inrushing Ronan Kerins. Thomas Dillon cut the gap to a single point as we approached the final whistle. Senans were not done and in the dying moments they had their dander up and Ronan Kerins played a captains part to send a stunner to the net for a victory they fully deserved but didn’t seem likely at the break. Desmonds did make an effort to grab to force the game into extra time but Senans held on for victory. After the game Chairman of the North Kerry Football Board Johnny Stack was on hand to present the Division 3 Cup to the winning St. Senans captain, Ronan Kerins amid great scenes of joy amongst players and supporters alike. Teams and Scorers; St. Senans; Eoin Relihan, Daniel Hunt, Darragh Behan, Luke Lynch, John Carmody, Jason O Leary, Sean Galvin, Ronan Kerins, 1gl, Paudie Dillon, 1gl, Con O Keeffe, 1pt, Darragh Kennelly, 2pts, Cormac White, Sean McGrath, Paudie Logue, Thomas Dillon, 1-2. MEANING OF LIFE “Wow! I’ve got the power!” I had just stepped onto the zebra crossing by the roundabout and the huge lorry coming from my left came to a grinding halt, as did the other cars coming from the two other approach roads. I felt like the policeman who stopped all the traffic with a wave of his hand in the song The Streets of New York!!

It is incredible but true. And there are so many magnificent benefits that come with that. Jesus gives every believer in His Name on earth the authority to use His Name. The Name of Jesus is the most powerful name that was, that is and forever will be. Jesus wants us to pray to the Father in this name. Why? What difference does it make?

But talking about power, it was only when I really came to believe that the bible truly is the Word of God that l came to understand the power that’s in the Name of Jesus.

Jesus has given us the legal right to use his Name. Every time we pray to God in the Name of Jesus God in heaven sees us through the eyes of Jesus His beloved Son. How amazing is that!

After God raised Jesus from the dead we are told in Philippians 2:9-10 that “...Therefore God also has highly exalted Him (Jesus) and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee shall bow in Heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue shall confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”

In the gospel of John 16:24 Jesus clearly tells us, asks us, and even wants us to pray in His name “Until now you have not asked for anything in My name. Ask and you will receive, and your joy will be complete.”

So what has that to do with me? It’s like this. The moment I made Jesus Christ Lord and Saviour of my life, the same power (the Holy Spirit of God) that raised Jesus from the dead caused me to be “reborn.” As a believer I have this resurrection power ( the Spirit of God) living in me.

So the truth is, we are not hopeless, helpless creatures, at the whim and mercy of all the negative destructive powers of this world. We have the authority of the King of the universe, the One True and Living God on our side.If we want Him, all we have to do is ask. If you require any further information please contact LCF at 087 9529907 Yours sincerely, Bridie (Dillon)Hartney
