WIND AWARE GROUPS CALL FOR MOTION OF NO CONFIDENCE IN AN BORD PLEANALA
Many local Wind Aware Groups are worried about the integrity and transparency within An Bord Pleanala. One of these groups is The Lixnaw Wind Aware Group who are opposed to the prospective wind farm on Ballinagare Bog. Kerry County Council turned down the wind farm application and the developers have subsequently appealed to An Bord Pleanala, with a decision due mid July. There have been a number of questions asked recently regarding conflicts of interest and the make up of the Bord, which is of real concern for groups hoping for a fair and impartial decision. The following letter has been sent to all KCC Councillors individually. “Following the recent revelations detailed mainly in the Irish Examiner by Mick Clifford we are calling on Kerry County Council to follow Cork City Council in passing a motion of no confidence in An Bord Pleanala. There are currently investigations into various conflicts of interest and the fact that inspectors have been asked to change their recommendations or that members of the board have overruled their own inspector’s reports. There are questions as to how the members of the board are nominated and how a Paul Hyde was nominated by a body that had been dissolved. He has now had to step down temporarily while under investigation We believe that to ensure everyone has faith in the independence of An Bord Pleanala, a new temporary Board should be appointed until these investigations are concluded. There should also be a review of how the various members are nominated and chosen, this process should be open and transparent in order to ensure people have confidence in the board and its decisions. At the same time there should be a review of the costly and time consuming appeals process to enable the appeal process to be available to everybody and not just for the developers who can afford to fight decisions through the courts. Please confirm that you will support the motion being put before the Council and that you will support the vote of no confidence in ABP.” Linda Edwards Chairperson for Lixnaw Wind Aware Group Fred O’Sullivan for Sliabh Luachra Wind Awareness Group Michael Horan for Scart Wind Aware Group
LISTOWEL TIDY TOWNS
YES ! Its that time of the year again with judging for the National Tidy Towns competition ongoing from June to August and the Listowel Tidy Towns Group are under pressure. So much to do and so little time to do it as they prepare for their second judging. If Listowel is to maintain the high standard it has worked so hard to achieve it needs the full support and involvement of the whole community. Basically, Listowel Tidy Towns Group urgently need more hands on deck. The work of Tidy Towns is widespread. Its far more than litter picking and there is something there for everyone. We brush, we plant, we weed, we paint and we maintain. Evidence of work carried out by Tidy Towns can be seen at all entrances to Listowel, right into the centre of our beautiful town. We also have the hidden gems we help to care for - European Gardens, our treasured Town Park, the River Walk, Teampaillin Ban, our Community Orchard, the local Ball Alley, our Bio-diversity area and the various planted areas. While the work of Tidy Towns is never plain sailing, it is also very much a social outlet where many strong friendships have been made down through the years. Listowel Tidy Towns are a community group working for and with the community. While we have the support of the local businesses and some of the many community groups, we are making an extra appeal to everyone, businesses, residents, housing estates and all the community groups to make an extra special efford these next few weeks and put their shoulder to the wheel in maintaining and enhancing this beautiful town that we live in. Huge credit must go to our ever decreasing group of volunteers who have achieved so much in the last few months. Great credit is also due to the ground staff of the Listowel Municipal Area and our scheme participants and their work as they help prepare Listowel for this years adjudicators. We are so grateful to them, as they never let us down. Tidy Towns is all about having pride and respect for where we live and passing that pride and respect on to the next generation And what better way to do it than by example. Officially Listowel Tidy Towns group meet at St. Johns every Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 7pm. However understandably this may not be suitable to everyone. But theres no need to despair. Theres nothing stopping anyone doing a tidy-up in their own area at a time or day that’s suitable to them. This is something we, the Tidy Towns group encourage and hope to see people taking on board. Many hands make light work. Together we can do it PRO: Jackie Barrett-Madigan

THESE ARE SEVERAL HANDY WAYS TO MAKE YOUR BUSINESS WORK FOR YOU - FDC GROUP By Clement Hehir, FDC Group Kilmallock.
I have a friend who owns his own business that is well known in West Cork, and from the outside the business looks like it is doing great but on the inside I’m not so sure, as my friend is a bit of a control freak. He looks after recruitment, finance, marketing, operations, purchasing and sales. He employs 14 staff and works harder than any of them. His plan is to sell the business at some stage and retire comfortably but if he leaves the business, will it crumble when he walks out the door because of the way he has been operating the company? He has left himself open on so many fronts, but the good news is that there are also so many ways in which I can help him to radically improve his position. Some business owners don’t draw anything from the business in the early years and those that do reward themselves in different ways- dividends, expenses, drawings etc. It is critical, however, that business owners draw PAYE earnings as early as possible, no matter how small, to create service. From Revenue’s point of view, the number of years of service you have is dictated by the number of years you had PAYE earnings. The more service you have improves your exit from the business on two fronts – you create more scope for pension funding and the company can pay you more as a termination payment. On too many occasions I have witnessed spouses doing all the payroll or administration without being paid. Then the company becomes cash-rich and may want to plough some of the resources into a pension for the spouse but can’t because the spouse has no service. If a family member is doing any work within the company, pay via PAYE. Isn’t it somewhat reckless for a business owner not to hedge their bets against ill-health which could cause the business to crumble? Ensuring your income through income protection and critical illness is a simple, cost-effective hedging strategy and the best thing of all is that the company can pay for it – so no excuses. Most companies accumulate surplus cash over time, and it needs to be extracted in the most tax efficient way possible, but in the interim, you need to make that capital work more smartly for your business. When it comes to investing corporate cash, the options are limitless insofar as the company can buy deposits, shares, funds or property. Revenue forces companies to distribute or pay out their investment income to avoid a surcharge. Say the company wanted to invest in a property, then they could go to an auctioneer and buy a property, rent it out, account for the income in the accounts and suffer CGT on any gains. Being a close company, the business would also have to distribute the rent to avoid paying additional tax. Alternatively, the company could opt to invest in a property fund, thus giving them exposure to the same investment returns without the bureaucracy and avoid any surcharge issues until the investment matures, or after eight years, if earlier. If you are in business with a partner or partners, and one of them dies unexpectedly, then their spouse or children could become your new business partner. Wouldn’t you prefer to have the choice as to whether you want them in the business or not? That is where shareholder protection comes in. With business insurance the partners insure each other and agree to give first preference on their shareholding to each other. If you can work with the spouse or children, then you keep the cash paid by the insurance company. If not, then you pay the spouse or children the cash from the insurance company for the shares in the company. Retirement relief from capital gains tax can potentially reduce a business owner’s tax bill to zero when they dispose of their shares in the company and the beauty of it is that you don’t have to retire from the business at all, but you must sell all your shares to another party (typically a family member) and stay doing whatever it was they were doing within the company. This is a detailed and complex process so tread with caution and getting proper tax advice is a must. A pension is another way of extracting money out of a business and should be seen as a complicated savings plan. There are rules on how much you can put in, when and how you take it out and what you can do with your savings when they’re in the pension. There is no other savings plan in the State that allows a business to contribute up to €2m to it without you or the company paying tax. A termination payment is where a business can potentially pay up to €200,000 tax-free. However, the tax-free amount is heavily influenced by your length of service and that’s why drawing a salary should be the first thing on the ‘to do’ list. This is not the same as the €200,000 allowable tax-free under pension legislation, so if you play your corporate cards correctly you could have up to €400,000 tax-free in total. This, again, is complicated and the rules around termination payments and their interaction with pension payments can be mind- numbing, so professional tax advice is needed. Staff retention, especially that of a star performer in the current environment, is a must for most good businesses. One of the solutions is a pension. It needs to be decent enough to become an influencer, death in service benefit etc and you can put in a few conditions such as – 1 year service before you can join; 2 years of contributions needed before a clawback. This way you can potentially dangle a carrot over them for three years. So, have I told my friend all this? Of course – and he has taken on board a lot of my suggestions and the company is now in a more comfortable place with a proper business exit plan, key staff members taking on more responsibility and – most importantly – my friend has more time for family and friends.
CREATIVE IRELAND KERRY, PUBLIC CONSULTATION FOR DRAFT STRATEGY 2023-2027; ‘WE WANT YOUR INPUT!’
Kerry County Council’s Creative Ireland Kerry Office is inviting people of all ages, across Kerry, to help inform the priorities to deliver the next Creative Ireland Kerry Strategy 2023-2027. Cathaoirleach of Kerry, Cllr. John Francis Flynn has welcomed this invitation,’ Creativity has people at its heart, and in Kerry there are many people who are involved in creativity, and many people who need to have more opportunity to get involved’. He further stated that, ‘The Creative Ireland Kerry programme has done great work these past five years, there is no doubt in my mind that the next five years will bring more communities on board and bring creativity into many more homes across Kerry’. Nationally, the Creative Ireland programme has five key pillars for the next five years these are: (1) Creative Youth, (2) Creative Community, (3) Creative Industries, (4) Creative Health and Well-being, (5) Creative Climate Action and Sustainability. Creative Ireland defines creativity broadly as: ‘A set of innate abilities and learned skills; the capacity of individuals and organisations to transcend accepted ideas and norms and, by drawing on imagination, to create new ideas that bring additional value to human activity’. Kerry County Council has been progressive in adapting its programme over the past five years to work with communities and the creative sector. The programme has moved from grants based year one, to projects of scale and ambition year two and three, as was the ask at the time nationally. Through the past two years and Covid impact, the programme was delivered more intensively across the Creativity and Cultural Team of Kerry County Council delivering projects such as murals as part of ‘creative place making’, with the Municipal District Offices, Tidy Towns and Community Groups, and ‘capacity building’ helping key creative sector organisations to plan through Covid, and across Kerry County Council business units to reach into communities in a meaningful way as restrictions proved challenging for much activity. Delivery included Architecture Kerry, led by the Planning Unit, Covid Car Concerts, working with Kerry Age Friendly Office, Festival in a Van, ‘Fighting Words’ with Kerry Writer’s Museum, ‘Biddys project’, Killorglin, with the Municipal District Office and Community Council, and Creative Sector Mentoring with the Kerry LEO Office, to name but a few. All programme delivery is available to view on the nation website www.creativeireland.ie/Kerry ‘Creative Ireland is very much about citizen and societal well-being’ stated Arts Officer and Creative Ireland Coordinator in Kerry, Kate Kennelly, ‘As we shape a new strategy, supported by Creative Ireland & the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sports and Media, we want Creative Ireland to be about the people of Kerry, and very much for the people of Kerry’. Sean Mulchinock, the Creative Ireland Kerry Programme Administrator advises that, ‘Consultation is open via an online Questionnaire https://tinyurl.com/ CIK2022 and also via an online public meeting Thursday 14th July at 6.15 pm’. To register for this meeting and receive the meeting link, please email to arts@kerrycoco.ie. If people want to submit ideas in writing they are welcome to do so to arts@kerrycoco.ie or to the Arts Office, County Buildings, Rathass, Tralee. For calls please phone 066 7183541, Monday to Friday 9-5. ‘We hope to have the draft strategy available for public consultation early in the final quarter of 2022’ advised Kate. Full details will be available on Kerry County Council’s website www.kerrycoco.ie and through online Arts Service social media @KerryCoArts.

SAN RITA WELLNESS
Welcome to San Rita Wellness weekly column…We hope you are safe and well Most of us know that we need to aim for a healthy, balanced diet and regular exercise to maintain our physical health. These same goals are also important when maintaining our mental health and well-being. Many people struggle with balanced eating, being active and feeling good about their bodies Quick tips for healthy living Healthy living is all about moderation, balance and flexibility. There will be some days when you don’t eat healthy foods and some days when you don’t do enough exercise. This can be totally normal in your busy, sometimes stressful life. However you may get a more accurate picture of how you’ve been doing if you look back over the past month or so. For the month ahead, aim to make small changes that will improve your health, both mentally and physically Here are some ideas: * Nourish your body throughout the day—avoid skipping meals. * Eat a variety of foods and aim for a balance over the month. * Eat slowly and without the distractions of TV, computers or smart phones. * Rather than worry about ‘good’ versus ‘bad’ foods, remember that moderation is the key. * Try to eat more fruits and vegetables. * Drink lots of water. It helps reduce fatigue and replenishes the body. * Use caffeine in moderation, particularly if you are prone to anxiety or sleep problems. * Listen to your body’s signals—it will let you know when you are full or hungry. * Become more conscious of why you eat when you are not really hungry. * Use exercise as a way to deal with stress. * Slowly increase your physical activity level. Try adding in extra activity throughout your normal day, such as getting in an extra walk whether it is in the morning or the evening time. If you are heading to the beach for the day don’t sit in the lounger all day, go for walk or a swim. Not alone is it healthy for you but you will also benefit both mentally and physically. Remind yourself that weight and shape are not the only way to evaluate your self-worth think of at least one other way that shows you are a worthwhile, lovable, talented person who has something to offer the world. Because after all you are. You don’t have to make big changes to improve your wellness and maintain good mental health. Every small change will make a big difference. When it comes to healthy eating and exercise, every little bit counts! At San Rita Wellness our ethos is “Eat well, Feel well, Live well“ For extra support and for weekly accountability check us out on Facebook San Rita Wellness or sanritawellness.ie for details of our “In Person Meetings”, “At Home Service” or our “One to One Service”

WE DON’T KNOW OURSELVES:
A PERSONAL HISTORY OF IRELAND SINCE 1958 By Fintan O’Toole
Fintan O’Toole, Ireland’s leading public intellectual and author of Heroic Failure, tells a history of Ireland in his own time - a brilliant interweaving of memoir and historical narrative. Fintan O’Toole was born in 1958. His life covers Ireland’s journey out of underdevelopment and domination by the Church, to the country’s transformation into the relatively prosperous and tolerant society that it is today. But, along the way, there was a sectarian civil war in the North, which cast a dark shadow over the whole island, and bitter struggles for intellectual, civil and sexual freedoms. The Church fought a long rearguard action to defend its entrenched positions in education, healthcare and childcare. The truth about child abuse and institutional cruelty emerged slowly, and women still had to die to make possible the liberalisation of Irish laws on contraception and divorce. This is a very personal history by a writer who is considered by many to be the country’s leading public intellectual. He was a participant in many of the controversies and arguments of the past 35 years and knew the leading literary, musical and political figures of those decades.

guaranteed to see a thrilling game of football being played between the two parish teams. Asdee opened the game with a point in the first five minutes and Michael Holly responded with the first point for Ballylongford five minutes later. Padraig O’Neill, Mike McEllistrem, and Cian Barratt played some outstanding football, and in the second quarter, Ballylongford gained critical possession of the ball with support coming from James O’Connor and Paddy O’Neill. Niall Heaphy wasted no time firing the ball between the poles to score a well-earned point, Ciaran O’Connor was on target scoring two points from frees and Jeremiah Tydings and Michael Holly added a further two points. Half Time Score: Ballylongford 7pts v Asdee 2pt Asdee started off the second half with some competitive football being played and scored two points in quick succession. Ballylongford was slow to respond as Asdee added more points and looked set to retain possession in the second half. Ballylongford responded with some great teamwork and tactical play coming from Tadgh McEllistrem and Matt O’Connor that helped Michael Holly blast the ball into the back of the goal in the fourth quarter. Asdee made several attempts to level and played some challenging football throughout the game. Ballylongfords Paudie Moroney’s skillful goalkeeping experience disappointed Asdee forwards from executing any goals with some fast-paced saves. During the remainder of the game, Ballylongfords momentum was difficult for Asdee to overcome as combined points flowed freely from Ciaran O’Connor, Joe McCarthy, Jack Mulvihill, James O’Connor, and Sean Hanrahan. The input of some fresh legs being introduced from substitutes Tom Doherty, Adam Finucane, and Conor Carmody added more focus to the team and helped the team drive forward to win out the game with some additional points being added to the scoreboard in the last minutes of the game coming from Michael Holly and Niall Heaphy. Credit goes to every single player for a deserving “TEAM” win! Full-Time Score: Ballylongford 1.14 v Asdee 11pts. Team: 1. Paudie Moroney 2. Padraig O’Neill 3. Michael McEllistrem 4. ST MICHAEL’S CHURCH Mass Times: Monday 4th July at 7.30pm for Michael, Brigid & Bridie Allen, Gortadrislig. Thursday 7th July at 10.00am. Friday 8th July at 7.30pm for Pauline, Anne & deceased members of Barry & Leen Families. Saturday 9th July at 7.30pm for Moss Joe Shanahan, Liscullane, (Month’s Mind); Pat Joe, James, Bob, Jim & Mary Horgan, Gortinare.
DEATH There was widespread regret in the parish and beyond at the unexpected death of James Murphy, Church Street, Tarbert. James, who was aged 79, died at Milford Care Centre, Limerick on Saturday 25 June after a short illness. He reposed at home in Church Street and his good friend and neighbour Fr John O’Connor prayed the Rosary with family and friends on Sunday evening. He was waked at home on Monday evening with large crowds paying their respects. Removal from his residence took place on Tuesday morning with his coffin being shouldered from his home in the traditional way by his four sons, cousins and neighbours. Requiem Mass was celebrated in St Mary’s Church, Tarbert. The main celebrant was Fr Mark Connolly, a cousin of Joan’s and he was assisted by Fr John O’Connor and Fr Philip O’Connell. Fr Mark in his homily said that when James lost his eyesight 46 years ago in a tragic car accident, he never complained but accepted his injury and Cross with great faith and fortitude and he had a great capacity for making friends. He traced his varied career. James was one of 6 children, 4 boys and 2 girls, born to Maurice and Annie Murphy, née McNamara in Doonard, Tarbert. He attended the local National School and St Ita’s College and then worked on the family farm for a few years. He purchased a lorry and worked a fruit and vegetable round, buying and selling potatoes in all parts of Kerry and beyond. In recent years he could recall every highway and cross roads travelled with remarkable clarity. In 1968 he married Joan Kelly from Ballyguiltenane, Glin and the union was blessed with four sons. In 1971 he purchased the Central Garage and adjoining dwelling house from Franco Kelly. Here as well as selling petrol and diesel he purchased, sold and repaired cars with his brother Des. In 1976, following the loss of his eyesight, he sold the Central Garage to Frank Lavery and he and Joan purchased and converted a nearby dwelling house in Church Street into Murphy’s Restaurant and Take Away. Joan, his anam cara was obliged to resume her teaching career in Abbeyfeale, rear a family as well as oversee the running of the Restaurant which had acquired a reputation for excellent food and service. In later years they sold the restaurant. Ivan, the eldest son, in a tribute to his father regaled the congregation with stories of how James, always funny and witty would play pranks on people and enjoy the repartee afterwards. He named and thanked the Gang of Four who would call for James every Thursday night and do a tour of the local public houses. James would be in his element singing and telling stories. Concluding, he said that while his father never sought the limelight he would be delighted with the large turnout at his final slán abhaile. Again, there was a large congregation in St Mary’s New Cemetery where James was laid to rest across the way from his cousin and great friend Johnny Coolahan. At the graveside his friend Ger Buckley sang his signature song ‘On Raglan Road’ and for all gathered ‘grief was a fallen leaf along the enchanted way’. The funeral service was very professionally and respectfully carried out by his friend Tomás Coolahan, Undertaker and his team. Sympathy of the community is extended to his wife Joan, sons Ivan, Ken, Roy and Cathal, his sisters Ann in America, Angela in Dublin, brothers Michael in Limerick, John in Dublin and Des in Tarbert, to his grandchildren Saoirse and Ruadhan, his daughters-in-law Orla and Edel, relatives and a large circle of friends who greatly enjoyed his wonderful company. ‘God doth not need either man’s work or his own gifts. Who best bear his mild yoke, they serve him best ‘. - John Milton, poem ‘On his Blindness’. Sympathy also to Mary Dillane, Chapel Street on the death of her brother Willie McCarthy, London and formerly of Liscullane, Lixnaw. Willie died unexpectedly on 21 June and his funeral service will take place shortly in London. Sympathy to Con Leane, Doonard, Tarbert and his brother Johnny, formerly of Sallowglen on the death of their sister Kathleen Smyth of Portmarnock, County Dublin and formerly of Ballydonoghue who died on Saturday 2 July and whose Requiem Mass took place on Wednesday 6 July followed by burial in Balgriffin Cemetery. Beannacht Dé le h-anamacha na marbh go léir. FUTURE STARS Well done to Jimmy Carmody, son of Mike and Aileen Carmody and grandson of publican Nuala. He was in Ireland with the New York Féile hurling team playing in Division 4 Plate Final which they won. He also lined out with the New York football team but they were beaten by Austin Stacks, Tralee. Another upcoming star is Liam Cooper, son of Liam and Helen Cooper, formerly Enright of Doonard, Tarbert. He was a member of the Tralee Parnell’s hurling side who won the Division 3 Cup Final last weekend. Briseann an dúchais í gcónaí, JOYRIDE The world premiere of the Kerry made film ‘Joyride’ took place at the Galway Film Fleadh last Tuesday. Many of the scenes for the feelgood film starring Oscar award winner Olivia Colman were filmed in Tarbert Island and on the Shannon Car Ferry. This is acknowledged on a wall plaque recently erected by the Tarbert Maritime Club on their boat house which has a beautiful mural seascape painted by the film company based on a painting by artist Gill Walton. LUIMNEACH ABÚ Well done to our neighbours Limerick in beating a gallant Galway side to advance to the All Ireland Hurling Final on Sunday 17 July in their quest for 3 in a row McCarthy Cups. GAA €500 DRAW The Jackpot July winner of the GAA 500 Monthly Draw was Tara Denihan who won €500 with €50 being won by Maura Abbot and €50 won by James Carrig. Comhghairdeas le gach buaiteoir. BEALE GAA
It’s a crucial game when we travel to play Austin Stacks B on Saturday evening. With just one game left in the County League, Division 4, we are hovering in the relegation zone. We rank ninth on the table, with only four wins from ten games. Tarbert are our opponents in the opening match of Group 3 of the County Junior Club Championship. We are awaiting details of the date and venue. Beale juniors came up short against Ballyduff in Division 4A of the North Kerry League last Tuesday. Our game with Moyvane has been postponed until July 16th.Our final round game is against Clounmacon and then we play the postponed game against Tarbert in mid-July. North Kerry U-21s’ trip to Waterville was worthwhile, coming away with a good win over South Kerry in the second round of the County Championship. The final score was 2-12 to 0-13. North Kerry U-17s kick off the County Championship, Group 1, against Rathmore on July 18th. Their second-round game will be against St Brendan’s Board and final round against East Kerry. The winning numbers drawn inthis week’s Beale Lotto on Monday nightwere 4, 12, 24 and 30. There was no jackpot winner and one Match-3 winner, Berkie Browne, who wins €100.

Pride of place went to the Instrumental Music group of Katie Joyce, Gracie O’Sullivan, Finan Fogarty, Saoirse Fogarty and Marianne Kiely, who, despite having been up against top opposition, came in second place. The other participants - Recitation, Jack Browne, and the Novelty Act with Katie Joyce, Jack Browne, Evie O Connor, Rory O Connor, Evelyn Pierce, Gracie O Sullivan and Patsy Rose Byrne - gave outstanding performances. A huge ‘buladh bos’ to mentors, Betty Joyce, Finola Fogarty and Martina Browne and to Beale GAA Cultural Officer, Claire O’Mahoney, for their hard work and commitment in encouraging these young people to participate and enjoy our tradition

BALLYLONGFORD GAA
County Senior League Div 5 Rd 8 Ballylongford v Asdee Date: Saturday 2nd July 2022 - Time: 7.30pm Venue: O’Rahilly Park Ballylongford Ballylongford had a brilliant win at home to Asdee in O’Rahilly Park on Saturday evening, our members, friends, and neighbours who attended and filled out the stand and hill were guaranteed to see a thrilling game of football being played between the two parish teams. The input of some fresh legs being introduced from substitutes Tom Doherty, Adam Finucane, and Conor Carmody added more focus to the team and helped the team drive forward to win out the game with some additional points being added to the scoreboard in the last minutes of the game coming from Michael Holly and Niall Heaphy, credit goes to every single player for a deserving “TEAM” win! Full-Time Score: Ballylongford 1.14 v Asdee 11pts Team: 1. Paudie Moroney 2. Padraig O’Neill 3. Michael McEllistrem 4. Joe McCarthy (1pt) 5. James O’Connor (1pt) 6. Sean Hanrahan (1pt) 7. Cian Barratt 8. Paddy O’Neill 9. Tadgh McEllistrem, 10. Matt O’Connor, 11. Jeremiah Tydings (1pt) 12. Jack Mulvihill (1pt) 13. Niall Heaphy (2pts) 14. Ciaran O’Connor (2pts) 15. LENAMORE ROVERS
Lenamore Rovers F.C had a comprehensive 6 – 0 victory over Castlegregory last week in the Tommy Healy Cup. An og after five minutes gave us the lead we deserved. A dominant performance with constant pressure on the Castlegregory defence gave up a lot of opportunities. Goals followed by Michael Holly, Jack Mulvihill, Patrick Carmody and a first for our club, a father and son combination Donal and Lorcan Leahy rounded off the scoring to secure our place in the quarter finals. Team: Matt O Connor, Sean Hanrahan, Ciaran O Connor, Kieran Swan, Liam McCarthy, Jack Mulvihill, Michael Holly, Brion Cregan, Pa Carmody, Wayne Hayes, Donal Leahy Sub: Lorcan Leahy. MOTM: Matt O Connor Details of this tie to be announced. The club have been successful in been awarded a grant of €750 from the Kerry County Council Communities Activities Fund towards the cost of a Defibrillator and Storage box which will be located on our clubhouse. The club will be registering the AED on the National Ambulance Service geographical Locator. The N/E Kerry Community First Responders Group will provide places free of charge for people interested in completing the PHECC accredited CFR course in Knockanure Hall when upcoming courses are organised. The total cost of the Defibrillator and storage box is €1750. Details of a fundraiser to make up the cost will be announced in the coming weeks. Please follow the club Facebook page for information.
DUAGH/LYRE COMM. GAMES
Last Saturday & Sunday all roads led to An Riocht, Castleisland for the Kerry community games athletics finals sponsored by Kerry Group. Duagh/Lyre had 46 participants registered and 40 competed over the two days. The road to Castleisland was wet but there was a nice surprise in store; it was dry on arrival. The weather was not going to deter the spirit of our younger athletes, all ready and eager to participate. The gazebo was put up and seats in place, thanks to Sam, Michelle and Joanne, no hanging around by ye. Tops and numbers were distributed and a warm up completed and we were ready for action. The enthusiasm of our younger athletes was brilliant, win or lose they never lost their smile. First time competing were, U8 60m: Aoise Murphy, Aidan Dillon & Paddy Keane and U8 80m: Louise Dillon & Padraig Kelly who all ran brilliantly in their heats. U10 100m: Orla O’Brien, Samantha Lyons, Patrick Dillon & Daniel Keane. U10 200m: Darragh Enright was second in his heat & qualified for the semi final,
unfortunately losing out on a place in the final. Michael Fitzgerald was 4th in his heat with only 3 to qualify. U10 hurdles: Shauna Enright qualified for the final in her first competition and finished 5th, just outside the medals. Katie Lane ran a great race and was just outside qualifying for the finals. Ryan Cronin jumped brilliantly and was such a natural and unlucky not to secure a place in the semi finals. Jeremiah Buckley ran a super semi final to win and secure a place in the final. Unfortunately the weather came into play and Jeremiah finished 5th with only 4 to qualify for the regional finals. U12 ball throw: Here we had 3 participants, Odhran O’Regan, Conor Enright and Caoilinn Harte. All finished outside the medals but enjoyed the experience. U12 100m: Saidhbh Hanley, Gearoid Brosnan and Liam Dennehy ran, with Liam 3rd in his heat gaining a place in the semi final. U12 600m: Shauna Riordan, Marc Kelly and Eoghan Dillon all put in super efforts in a difficult race. U12 200m: Holly Carmody, Abbie McElligott and Jack Cronin all ran superb in a sprint from start to finish. To finish off we had 3 relay teams who gained great experience on the track. U10 mixed: Samantha Lyons, Katie Lane, Orla O’Brien, Patrick Dillon, Jeremiah Buckley and Daniel Keane. U12 girls: Holly Carmody, Abbie McElligott, Caoimhe Fitzgerald, Saidhbh Hanley and Shauna O’Riordan. U12 boys: Jack Cronin, Marc Kelly, Gearoid Brosnan, Liam Dennehy, Conor Enright and Eoghan Dillon. The last event of the day was the U14 long puck where John Ryan was participating. John pucked out his 3 sliotars with his farthest one measuring 59.95m. John finished 5th, just outside the medals with a margin of 30cm separating 3rd, 4th, and 5th. Well done John, we are so proud of you. This brought a happy end to day 1. A wet and windy start to Sunday morning was facing participants. First up was the U16 discus with Aoibhinn Harte and Cillian McMahon throwing. Both threw superbly and won silver medals securing a place in National Finals. Cillian narrowly lost out on gold by 40cm. In the U14 shot putt we had Emily Rose Ashley throwing in her first shot competition finishing outside the medals but showing great potential. Thomas Cahill was throwing in a strong field and just back from injury, finishing a strong 4th winning a pewter medal. U14 hurdles: We had Catherine Buckley finishing 4th with only two going through to the final. U14 100m: Charlotte Rydziova finished 5th in her semi final running a great race. U16 100m: No stranger to the track was Saoirse Dillon, getting a great start and powering her way to a gold medal. Saoirse now goes through to the regional finals in Ennis. U16 200m: Oisín O’Regan ran a stormer of a race coming into the home straight in great position, from this Oisín kicked up the pace and delivered himself a fantastic individual gold medal and a place in the regional finals. Eimear Buckley had two runs. A great run in the semi saw her go through to the final. This final was by far the gutsiest race of the day , turning into the home straight in 4th position, Eimear dug deep and her sheer talent, guts and determination gave her the silver medal and a place in the regional finals in Ennis. U16 1500m: Twins Noelle and James Dillon took to the track. Both are having a great year in running and this experience stood to them in a strong field. Both put themselves into great positions with Noelle winning silver and James winning bronze, both qualifying for regional finals. In the final race of the day our U16 girls 4x100m relay team took to the track: Aoibhinn Harte, Saoirse Dillon, Noelle Dillon & Eimear Buckley, in a hotly contested final. The girls ran brilliant, getting the baton around safe and each put in a great effort. The battle opened up in the home straight with little between first and second. Spa/Fenit/Barrow clenched the win with Duagh/Lyre in second. Well done girls. Thanks to our volunteers over the two days, especially our chairperson Geraldine McNamara and County volunteers John Bunyan and Neilus Collins. Thanks to Kerry Community Games and their volunteers over the two days and An Riocht for the facilities. Overall we had a very enjoyable two days, 40 participants, 2 gold, 4 silver, 1 bronze, 1 pewter and 1 silver relay. U10 gaelic football: In round 1 Duagh/Lyre played Moyvane in Knockanure with the sun shining. Duagh/Lyre got off to a great start and came away with a great win to secure a place in the second round against Lixnaw. The game against Lixnaw was played in Duagh in somewhat wet and windy conditions. The Duagh/Lyre boys played their hearts out, never gave up and battled to the final whistle. Lixnaw proved stronger in the end and we wish them good luck going forward. Team: Jeremiah Buckley, Fionn Buckley, Oisín Byrne, Jack O’Connor, Ryan Cronin, Aiden Dennehy, Luke Dennehy, Patrick Dillon, Seán Enright, Michael Fitzgerald, Jack Gaire, Eoin Griffin, Eoin Lane, Seán Musgrave, Tadhg Sheehy and Luke Stack.
