MOVIE WEEK 2021 BY KIANA BREATHNACH
From the 10th to the 16th of July Fís na hÓige Productions ran a week-long summer camp. During this week we worked with professionals and learned all about filmmaking, video production and so much more! For the first 4 days we took part in various different workshops, for example we did some on cinematography, animation, special effects, screenwriting and different roles on a film set and how they work together. Then for the next three days we worked on a short film, which we wrote. But only one group could work on the film set at a time so the others were helping with a documentary and putting together skits. As a whole, Movie Week was amazing! I would wake up every morning, excited for each day. Let’s just say I was not disappointed, we would meet at St. Johns every morning and from there we would split up into our pods and do a multitude of different activities. Every day was different and I learned so much over the course of the week. We were taught by a group of phenomenal mentors - Tommy Fitzgerald, Patrick Ryan, JJ O’Sullivan, Freddie Greenall, Lauryn Moore and Jack Mckenna. They really put their all into what they were teaching, you couldn’t have asked for better. And of course we can’t forget about the man who organised it all, Chris Fitzgerald and our photographer Seán Casey. Thank you everyone for the best week! I would recommend that anyone with even the slightest interest in film take part in Movie Week 2022! Finally, I would just like to say a massive Thank You to St. John’s Theatre and Arts Centre, Kerry Writers’ Museum and The Young Irish Film Makers. None of this would have been possible without them!
FÍS NA HÓIGE MOVIE REVIEW STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE
This week Fís na hÓige member, Mary Catherine O’Connor, is reviewing the movie; “Star Wars: A New Hope”. If you’re looking for a family movie to watch, keep an eye on this page where Fís na hÓige will be reviewing the very best movies for you to watch. Star Wars: A New Hope, is a science fiction movie, released in 1977. It was directed and written by George Lucas. This is the first film in the Star Wars original trilogy, although it starts on the fourth episode. The movie is based nineteen years after the formation of the Galactic empire. At the start of the movie Stormtroopers manage to board the ship and defeat the guards defending the ship, then Darth Vader arrives. Princess Leia is hiding on the ship but she is spotted by Stormtroopers and they shoot her with a stun blast, they then take her to Darth Vader. Before she was detained, Leia managed to record a holographic message with a droid called R2-D2 and assigned him to take the message to Obi-Wan Kenobi. R2-D2 and another droid called C-3PO use an escape pod to reach the planet of Tatooine. The droids are bought by a moisture farmer and his nephew Luke Skywalker. R2-D2 escapes from their home and tries to find Obi-Wan Kenobi. Luke and the other droid searches for R2-D2, but get attacked by sand people, then ObiWan rescues them. They then go on a mission to save the Princess. My favourite thing about this movie is the characters’ stories, especially Luke. He lives on a farm with his aunt and uncle but he wants to get away from the farm. When he finally gets away, he is faced with a lot of hard decisions and he also loses people close to him. This is also my favourite movie in the Star Wars franchise as it introduces us to the main characters. I would recommend this movie to anyone over 12 years of age that is interested in sci-fi or someone who likes action and adventure movies.

Welcome to our weekly column and our pod of positivity. It is here you will find little tips and tools that help us to maintain a life of health, wellness, love, and gratitude as well as all the information on dóTerra’s powerful essential oils. As we have moved gently into the month of August, we look at taking the time for ourselves and start incorporating little practices into our daily routine that will improve our Wellbeing before we get busy for the return and routine of school. For some it could be gentle breathing exercises, journaling and making your daily gratitude lists, getting out in the evenings for a walk, making new food choices or treating yourself to one of dóTerra’s essential oil from our Pod of Positivity.

Feel Good About You - Whatever it is, let it be something that helps you feel good about yourself in your daily life. As an advocate for dóTerra essential oils I know how the oils can support the Body, the Mind, and the Mood and this week is I want to tell you about dóTerra’s Aroma Touch Blend and how you can incorporate it into your self-care routine. Widely used as a massage oil for its comforting properties, this beautiful oil reduces stress and tensions in the body and mind. It has a very relaxing effect when diffused in a room and improves any massage experience with its soothing aroma. Apply Aroma Touch to your neck and wrists before you practice Yoga, as it creates a calm environment while meditating. This gorgeous blend also assists the body in calming, relaxing, and releasing physical tension and on an emotional level it moves an individual from stiffness of heart and mind to openness and flexibility. It is also powerful in offering comfort in times of grief or sorrow. One can inhale straight from the bottle, diffuse, or place a drop into the hands, rub the hands together and cup the hands over the face and inhale deeply from them. I will be adding two to three drops of this soothing blend to my bath combined with Epsom Salt as part of my self-care routine over the weekend. These oils can be used in three different ways: Topically – applying them on to our skin with or without a carrier oil. Aromatically – by placing a two to three drops into a cold-water diffuser and diffusing these oils in our homes, classrooms, offices, salons or places of work and business. And the third way, internally – by adding them to your favourite food, waters or drinks, or simply by taking one drop under the tongue daily. The oils are a natural solution to care for our needs and our Family’s health needs and they can support us in many of the following that we experience from time to time, such as: Anxiety Issues, Digestive Support, Sleep Assist, Muscle Care, Stress Buster, Depression, Grief, Energy Boost, Skin Support, Immunity Boost, Allergy Assist and so much more. For extra positivity and well-being, check out our Facebook page where we have information and videos on all dóTerra’s essential oils. My newly addition of Caroline’s Fashion Fix features the fabulous French clothing collection, ‘Captain Tortue’ and guarantees to uplift all our senses and give us that feel good factor. Should you wish to view the full catalogue collection you can reach me on the number below. Until next time, I leave you with our thought for the week, ‘Self Care is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation’. Caroline X Tel: 087 292 1292

KERRY SHORT FILM BURSARY 2021 €10,000 AWARDED TO ‘HAVEN’
The 2021 Kerry Short Film Bursary of €10,000 has been awarded to 3 Hot Whiskeys Productions for their short film “Haven”. The film follows the interactions between an Irish farming woman and a child newly arrived to Ireland as they become increasingly aware of each other. This Bursary is funded by Kerry County Council & the Arts Council of Ireland to support & encourage filmmaking within the county. The successful team consists of Producer Hugh O’Donoghue, Director Mo O’Connell & Writers, Rehan Ali & Ivan Cush. The panel were impressed by the strength of this application and its very current story. While it was the strongest application, the team were encouraged to further develop the script with experienced story consultant, Eilish Kent. The final draft was signed off in late July by the awarding panel. Haven will go into production in Kerry this summer for delivery in 2021. Siobhan O’Sullivan, Kerry ETB Film Development Officer, is “delighted to see this timely film receive funding in the county” and will assist the team in finding locations and local crew. The funders of the bursary, Kerry County Council in conjunction with the Arts Council of Ireland, are clear about its impact. Cathaoirleach, Cllr. Jimmy Moloney, described how important it is “to showcase Kerry as a filmmaking location while encouraging emerging talent”. Kate Kennelly, Arts Officer, agreed emphasising that the bursary “gives filmmakers the opportunity to establish their filmmaking voice while shooting in Kerry.” Kerry College Monavalley, a centre of excellence for film skills training, will also provide support to the production. Con O’Sullivan, Manager Kerry College, recognises that “gaining film bursary funding is a great opportunity for those building their careers in the industry”. In 2021 the focus was on a strong creative connection with Kerry. At least one of each application’s core creative team (Writer/Director/Producer) had to be from or living in Kerry. Producer, Hugh O’Donoghue, is from Killarney and is “incredibly honoured to be chosen by Kerry County Council and Screen Kerry for this Bursary. I look forward to working with such a talented team on such a powerful project in my native county.” Hugh has written, produced & directed a number of short films shot on location in Kerry. Director, Mo (or ‘Maureen’) O’Connell has made several no-budget awardwinning short films & a multi-award-winning no-budget slacker comedy feature film called, “SPA Weekend”. Writer Rehan Ali moved to Ireland from Pakistan in 2005 & became fascinated with filmmaking, setting up a community-based amateur film production company in his early teens. He has co-authored a book calling for an end to direct provision. Writer Ivan Cush’s recent short film, Silence, had its premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in June 2021 and screened at the Galway Film Fleadh in July 2021. This is a talented team with an interesting story to tell. They fought off tough competition to win the 2021 Bursary award & Screen Kerry commends all of the shortlisted teams on their applications.

SAN RITA WELLNESS
Welcome to San Rita Wellness weekly column…
How’s things? That is like something Pat Shortt would say. There is also another saying “ Where there’s a Will, there’s a Way “ So today we are going to talk about YOUR “ Will and Way “. Firstly how is your motivation now? Is it as strong as it was first day you decided to make some changes for a healthier you? If so, that’s brilliant. If not, then why not? Has it changed like the weather over the past few weeks? Good days / not so good days. Well we know we have absolutely no control over the weather BUT we do have control of what we do and how we feel. Ask yourself What or where do you feel you have control over that is working for you? What or where do you feel you have less control where things might not be working as well for you? Why am I doing this? We all have a reason “WHY“ we want to make changes. What was your “ WHY“? Is it as important to you today as it was then, or maybe your WHY has changed over time. It is important to remember and keep your “WHY “ close by especially in the times you may feel you are struggling and losing motivation. We know from our members at San Rita Wellness that remembering their initial “WHY“ helps to keep them motivated and gives them the incentive not to give up. Now that you remember your WHY lets look at the “Will and the Way “ to move forward and keep things going. ARE YOU WILLING ? What are the things you need to change to make a difference ? Here are some suggestions for you. * Food * Activity * Mindset FOOD - Is it the type of food you are eating? - Is it the amount of food on your plate? - is it lack of variety with your food for mealtimes? Activity - Do you enjoy the type of activity that you do? - Do you allow yourself enough time during the week to fit it in? - Is there another type of activity you could try for variation? Mindset - Could you think more positively about yourself? - Remember slow progress is better than no progress - Take it one day at a time, after all Rome wasn’t built in a day. ON YOUR WAY ! Sometimes people go back to doing things “ their way “ or “ no way “ but we know the San Rita Wellness plan is the way to go:

THE APPEAL By Janice Hallett
Dear Reader - enclosed are all the documents you need to solve a case. It starts with the arrival of two mysterious newcomers to the small town of Lockwood, and ends with a tragic death. Someone has already been convicted of this brutal murder and is currently in prison, but we suspect they are innocent. What’s more, we believe far darker secrets have yet to be revealed. Throughout the Fairway Players’ staging of All My Sons and the charity appeal for little Poppy Reswick’s life-saving medical treatment, the murderer hid in plain sight. Yet we believe they gave themselves away. In writing. The evidence is all here, between the lines, waiting to be discovered. Will you accept the challenge? Can you uncover the truth?

If this person has no respect for himself or herself would they please have respect for those buried there and their families who should not be subject to this rude behaviour? There is a very hard working committee in place that do marvellous work in the upkeep of the cemetery and they should not have to deal with this either, indeed they have enough work to do. DEATHS The death took place of Lil Stack (nee) Danaher of Bayview, Tieraclea, Tarbert and formerly of Knocknaboula, Foynes, County Limerick. Lil died at her daughter Cathriona’s residence in Fossa, Killarney on Saturday 24 July. Aged 91, she was the wife of the late Mick Stack, Managing Director of Listowel Livestock Mart. In accordance with Covid 19 regulations, her Requiem Mass was concelebrated in St Mary’s Church, Tarbert by Fr Sean Hanafin and Fr John O’Connor on Monday 26 July. Her son Don paid tribute to his mother for her influence on the lives of her four children. As the chanteuse sang out the lyrics of ‘Caledonia, you’re calling me and now I’m going home’ in the adjoining graveyard Lil Stack was laid to rest beside her late husband Mick who died in 1999 and her grandson Patrick Joseph Clifford who died in 2000. In 1959 Mick Stack was appointed Manager of the newly established Listowel mart and he and his wife Lil lived in rented accommodation in Chapel Street while their house was being built in Tieraclea. Tragically some years later as Lil was returning from her family home in Knocknaboula, rising flood waters trapped her and her two young children in their car just outside Glin on the road to Tarbert. While Lil and one young child survived the ordeal, a baby boy was swept to his death. Understandably this had a very traumatic effect on the young mother. In later years following the death of her husband and four of her children married in different locations she lived on her own. She led a very active lifestyle and meeting her for walks on the Island road, she was a very interesting conversationalist with very definite views on religion and moral questions of the day. Sympathy of the community is extended to her family - sons Edward and Don, daughters Marie and Cathriona, brother-in-law Eddie Stack, Moyvane, sister-in-law Patricia Danaher, daughters-in-law, sons-in-law, nephews, nieces, grandchildren, relatives and friends. Lil was predeceased by her sisters Sr. Emilian, Sr Roberta, Sr Anne and her brother Jimmy Danaher. Beannacht Dé lena h-anam uasal dilis. The death took place of Mary O’Donoghue (née Mackessy) of Woodlawn, the Bronx, New York and formerly of Tarmons West, Tarbert. Mary died at her residence on Friday 23 July surrounded by her family. She was aged 97 and was predeceased by her husband Michael O’Donoghue of Skibbereen, County Cork. Mary was one on 12 children, 7 boys and 5 girls born to the late Thady and Mary Mackessy of Tarmons West. In the late 1940’s, like many of her friends and neighbours, she was obliged to take the emigrant boat in search of employment. Following two years in England she and her sister Helen emigrated to the United States in 1949. Mary (aka Mame) became an active member of the New York Irish community. In time she became President of the Ancient Order of Hibernians, Bronx Division, 9 Ladies AOH. She was a member of the St Patrick’s Day Parade Committee and was appointed aide to the Grand Marshal of the New York Parade in 1988. Mary was a woman of boundless energy and enthusiasm actively fund raising for numerous Irish and American social causes. She was also a great lover of Irish history, culture and music and was a skilled harmonica and button accordion player. She was waked on Wednesday 28 July in a funeral parlour in Yonkers. Her funeral Mass took place on Thursday 29 July at St Barnabas R.C. Church, the Bronx followed by burial at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Valhalla, New York. She will be sadly missed by her son Michael and his wife Marianne (New York), daughter Catherine (New York), sisters Lila Kissane 94 (Tarbert ), Kitty McGee ( Birmingham), Noreen Burke (New York ) brothers Con In Tarbert, Tom in London, Jim in New York, sisters-in-law Theresa and Agnes Mackessy, nieces, cousins, friends and neighbours. She was predeceased by her sister Helen Moriarty, brothers Paddy, Timmy, Johnny and Joe Mackessy Suaimhneas sioraí agus codladh sámh aici.

Sadly the news came through of the passing of Connie Mackessy at Kilcara Nursing Home, Duagh of Wednesday 28 July as his sister Mary was being waked at a Funeral Home in Yonkers, New York. Born in 1933 to Thady and Mary Mackessy (née Healy) in Tarmons, Con like his brothers and sisters attended Tarmons National School. With no job opportunities available at home, Con like many of his friends and neighbours took the boat train to Euston, U.K. in search of employment. Post-War 1950’s Britain was a land of opportunity for Irishmen who were not afraid of hard work, long hours and a strange environment. Con and his brother Joe were appointed agents by builder John Murphy of Caherciveen and they supervised contracts all over London rebuilding infrastructure. They provided employment for emigrants from Kerry to Donegal over the nest twenty years. The first two weeks in August every year were reunion time for the Mackessy clan and led by their father Thady there would be many nights of music and sing song in Corridan’s Bar in Tarbert. Mackessys had always been a great house for Wran parties and card playing and Connie was no mean accordeon player. On a train journey from Dublin to Limerick, Connie met his future wife Mary Moroney from Loughill, County Limerick. They were married and returned to England and were blessed with four children. Connie, Mary and family later returned to Tarmons to take over the family farm. In failing health in recent years Connie spent time in nursing homes with his friend and neighbour Moss Mulvihill. Requiem Mass took place in St Mary’s Church, Tarbert on Saturday 31 July and was concelebrated by Fathers John O’Connor, Jimmy O’Hanlon, Philip O’Connell all of Tarbert. In a very emotive tribute his daughter Kathleen recalled that coincidentally on that very day 22 years ago her father had walked her up the aisle on the occasion of her wedding. There was a very large congregation in St Mary’s new cemetery where Connie was laid to rest beside his wife Mary who predeceased him in 2009. A trio of young musicians on banjo, bodhran and accordeon saluted a man and a family who had a great love of traditional Irish music and culture. His brothers Jim (USA) and Tom (UK) travelled home for the funeral. Sympathy of the community is extended to his sons Tim (UK), Con (Finuge) daughters Kathleen (Tarbert) and Maria (UK), brothers Tom and Jim, sisters Lila, Kitty and Noreen, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, nephews, nieces, grandchildren, relatives, neighbours and friends. SEANFHOCAIL NA SEACHTAINE ‘Ní thagann an óige faoi dhó choiche ach tagann an brón faoi dhó san oíche’ - Youth comes only once to each of us but sorrow comes twice in the night. ‘Sláinte chuig na fir is go maire na mná go deo’ -Health to the men and may the women live forever. ‘Ní hé lá na báisti, lá na bpáisti’ - A rainy day is no day for children.

LISTOWEL EMMETS
All Ireland Semi Final All members seeking tickets for the All Ireland Semi Final should contact club secretary Norah Browne immediately. Results: Listowel Emmets enjoyed their best run in the county league for many a long year as they held a seven point lead on Churchill to top division 3A on a scoreline of 2-10 to 0-09. The game started brightly for the home side with John Heaphy taking a good score from play however, it was all Churchill from the kickout and they ran a good spell in the open quarter taking three unanswered points with Emmets wayward kicking causing some issues for the sideline. On the resumption of the water break Emmets kicked on with a nice point from captain Cormac Mulvihill followed quickly by two frees from Sam Tarrant, to leave Emmets up a point but the ever reliable Parker taking a tight free to leave sides all square at the small whistle with 0-05 each. The home side again opened the scoring with a lovely link up between Tom McCarthy, Niall Collins and Sam Tarrant taking a nice score from play. Churchill struggled with Emmets running game and Davy Keane slotted over his first to put Emmets two in front, as Na Ghaeil saw two yellows Cormac Mulvihill found his feet and burst through the Na Ghaeil defence after linking well with the evergreen Ger McCarthy to rattle the back of the net. The townies tails were up and three scores in succession one from the outside of the boot from John Heaphy and a brace from Jack McElligott and a converted free from Sam Tarrant saw Emmets lead 1-9 to 0-7, just as the water break approached O’Brien linked well with Sean Keane and his fisted effort hit the back of the Churchill net. Ivan Parker tried hard to the end and put over a sensational point from the stand side but it was to be the last score of the game, Emmets not meet with Laune Rangers who emerged as division three B winners in the final of the division. It was a good performance by Emmets young team a man of the match performance from Niall Collins who unfortunately was stretchered off in the dying minutes of the game with an ankle injury, Tom McCarthy and Jack McElligott both caught the eye with solid performances. Best wishes to Niall Collins on a speedy recovery. We wish Sean, Johnny, Martin and the team every success in the final next Sunday. LISTOWEL CELTIC
Our Under 13 Girls travelled to Tralee on Monday 26th July to take on Killarney Celtic in the final of the Summer Soccer competition. A tight encounter finished 0-0 at the final whistle. Unfortunately for us, Killarney took a 3-0 lead in extra time before Fiona O Brien pulled a goal back. Our Girls pressed on until the final whistle but Killarney held out to take the title. While our Girls were disappointed they can be very proud of their efforts. A Big thanks to The Parents who supported the Girls all through the competition. Well done to coaches PJ and Dominic who are doing amazing work at this level. On Thursday 29th July we presented the winners of our Euro 2021 Fundraiser with their prizes in Pat Kennedy Park. First Place : Dara Browne 69pts €560, Joint Second : Micheál Pierse and Jerry Kelliher 67pts €120 each Congratulations to the winners and a big thanks to all who took part. Thanks for your continued support. All at Listowel Celtic are delighted to see Under 13 players Laura Falvey and Anna Slattery selected on the Vit-Hit Girls Roll of Honour for week ending 0108-2021. Anna’s resolute defending and Laura’s powerful attacking were key in our great run to the final of the Girls Under 13 Summer Competition. It’s fitting to see these Abbeydorney Ladies honoured for their fantastic displays in the green and white. Well done girls! BEALE GAA
It was not our day as our seniors suffered defeat at the hands of Firies in the crucial County League game on Sunday in Farranfore. A win here could have opened the door for divisional promotion, but alas, that was not to be. It was a hard, physical game with neither team giving an inch in the opening half. However, it took us time to settle as our opponents moved forward. They found scores easy to come by and took control. A goal in the second quarter brought us to within three points but we didn’t drive on from there. At the short whistle, we trailed by 2-7 to 1-4. Despite some good individual performances, we didn’t come to terms with our opponents’ kickout and seemed to be chasing the game. We didn’t get the breaks either and were unfortunate to miss two near goal chances which would have stood us in good stead. However, lady luck did not always favour our opponents either, and it must be said, the better team won on the day. Firies, indeed, look like a team on the upward curve. The final score read 1-8 to 3-15. With 3 wins from 5 games, we finished third on the table of Division 4A and we contest Division 4 in the County League again next year. We now turn our attention to the semi-final of the 2020 North Kerry Championship. Our meeting with Desmonds is scheduled for the end of August. The other semi-final pairing is Brosna/Ballydonoghue.

Farranfore didn’t prove to be a happy hunting ground either for our under-20s on Monday evening. We got off to a dream start with an early goal. However, we were four points adrift at the first water break and trailed by eight at half time. We pulled them back in the third quarter with a second goal. Nonetheless, our opponents tagged on the points and had the upper hand. The final score was not in our favour, 2-7 to 1-18. Our final round game in the County League, Div 4, is against An Ghaeltacht on Saturday in Gallarus at 4 o’clock.

We, in Beale GAA Club, extend sympathies to the family of Conor Heaphy, RIP. Conor was a force to be reckoned with on the Ballylongford team who had many memorable tussles with Beale in the 70s and early 80s and he formed lasting friendships with many of the Beale players of that era. On hanging up the boots, Conor devoted his time and energy to managing various Bally teams, especially promoting under-age players. In 2010, he took over as chairman of Shannon Rangers, with reviving the performance of the club as his priority. A great GAA player, manager and administrator has gone to his eternal reward. Results Under 15 County League Division 6 Final. Our St.Senan’s boys headed to Cordal last Wednesday evening to battle Kerins O’Rahilly’s for a county title in the warm sunshine. We got off to a great start with a well taken goal from Cian O’Connell as the first score, but the Tralee boys had matched it and added 2 points before the first water break. Following a few wides, which we put down to nerves Brian Enright hit the back of the net. Following that a couple of points were exchanged and we went in at the break trailing 2-01 - 2-04. In the second half, the heart in our players became more evident and we outscored the opposition, by kicking a point and hitting the back of the net twice, once from the penalty spot from Ruairí O’Connell and the other a brilliant piece of team work finished off by Ryan Hurley, to lead by 2 points at the second water break. In the final quarter, points were exchanged, the intensity stepped up and another 2 goals were bagged, both coming from substitute Evan O’Sullivan either side of a point from Tiernan Dennehy to put Senans 7 points clear but the Strand Rd boys never gave up and fought until the end scoring a goal in the final minute. St.Senan’s were the eventual winners with a final score of 6-04 to 3-09. It was an excellent team performance especially in the second half that saw our lads win out in the end.

“He is merciful and tender toward those who don’t deserve it..(that’s all of us!)..He never bears a grudge nor remains angry forever....He has not
punished us as we deserve, for His mercy towards those who fear and honour Him is as great as the height of the heavens above the earth. He has removed our sins as far away from us as the east is from the west. He is like a Father to us, tender and sympathetic to those who reverence Him.” Not only that but He has secured “Gold” for us, in a loving relationship with Him while we are alive and eternity with Him when we leave this planet. He paid dearly for that with the precious blood of His Beloved Son Jesus. To qualify for our “Gold medal” we just need to accept and believe that Jesus is the Son of God and that He died, was buried and on the third day God raised Him from the dead, for us. Don’t know about you, but I’m going for Gold. If you require any further information please contact LCF at 087 9529907. Yours sincerely, Bridie(Dillon)Hartney

Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked many favours.
This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your own favour not mine. Amen.
