NEW INITIATIVE FOR MUSICIANS
Kingdom Trad Orchestra is a new initiative to get musicians from county Kerry and the surrounding areas to come together and perform as an orchestral ensemble. The orchestra will focus on arrangement within traditional Irish music along with new compositions, with the aim of bringing the orchestra to perform in a state of the art theatre at the end of the term. Each Saturday we will run a 2 hour orchestra class for both Under 12’s (10am -12pm) and a Youth Orchestra (1pm - 3pm). Kingdom Trad Orchestra will commence its first term of 15 weeks on September 4th in Siamsa Tíre. If interested, send a 2 minute video or audio application to kingdomtradorchestra@gmail. com, Facebook Messenger or WhatsApp on (087) 969 8063. Kingdom Trad orchestra will be directed by Conor Moriarty and Sean Kelliher. Seán Kelliher began to learn Irish music at the age of 7. From a very young age, Seán always had a passion for performing traditional Irish music. In 2013, Sean took home gold at the All Ireland Fleadh in Derry. In 2016, Sean was awarded the Micheál Ó hEidhin medallion in Comhaltas headquarters in Dublin for receiving 4 distinctions from his Senior Cycle 8 Comhaltas examination. To date, Seán has performed all over Ireland while also travelling abroad on many occasions to parts of England, Wales, France, Germany Sweden, Denmark, Italy and The Netherlands. Recently, Sean has toured around China, to parts of Beijing and Shanghai, as part of the 2019 St Patrick’s day celebrations while also travelling to the USA to perform at the NAFSA Conference in Washington D.C in May of 2019 also. Seán is a full time member of both well-known bands The Rising and 3 on the Bund. Seán also performs with renowned Irish dance show Celtic Steps the Show during the summer season. Seán has just finished his undergraduate in Performing Arts - Irish Music at the Irish World Academy of Music and Dance in UL where he will graduate with a 1:1 First Class Honours degree this August. Conor Moriarty comes from Kilcummin in Co. Kerry. He developed a love for Irish music at a very young age, being surrounded by some of the masters of Sliabh Luachra music at the time. After a few years, Conor was crowned the All-Ireland champion at Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann on melodeon in 2009. One year on, Conor won the All-Ireland title for button accordion in 2010. On that same year, he also graduated with a masters in traditional Irish music performance from the University of Limerick. His solo album in 2012 ‘All in a Days Play’ garnished critical acclaim. The Irish times 4 start review described the album as “a three dimensional glorious debut”. In 2013, Conor worked as musical director for the renowned Irish dance show ‘Turas’, one of the many shows that takes place in Siamsa Tíre each year. In 2014, he alongside a few music contemporaries formed the band ‘The Trí Tones’ a band since renamed ‘Rianta’. They toured all over Ireland and Europe and released their debut album which went on to win TradConnects ‘Album of the Year’ award. FÍS NA HÓIGE MOVIE REVIEW THE GREATEST SHOWMAN
This week Fís na hÓige member, Niamh McAuliffe , is reviewing the movie; “The Greatest Showman”. If you’re looking for a family movie to watch, keep an eye on this page where Fís na hÓige will be reviewing the very best movies for you to watch. The film “The Greatest Showman,” rated PG, tells the story of the development of the world’s first circus, and determination of P.T. Barnum (Hugh Jackman), the man behind its creation. While the film could never be called historically accurate due to it’s glossing over of the more sinister aspects of the circus’ development, namely the abuse and racism directed towards the so called “freaks” who made up the acts which attracted crowds from far and wide, it is nonetheless a heart-warming and entertaining tale of determination and one man’s love for his family. The film follows Barnum, the son of a poor tailor whose father died when he was a child, as he struggles to succeed in a world which fights him at every turn. Having gone away to ‘make his fortune’ working on the great American Railroad, Barnum returns home to marry his childhood love, Charity, whose vastly wealthy parents disapproved of the match. The movie continues to depict Barnum’s struggle to hold down a job despite his clever mind, until he manages to deceive the bank into loaning him a sizable amount of money, which he uses to begin to create his ‘museum of oddities’, which would eventually morph into the famous circus. Director Michael Gracy does a wonderful job of portraying the struggles of a man desperate to succeed, as well as the greed which can overcome those who constantly want more, be it success, money or fame. It also touches on the racial divides of the time in a heart-warming way with the forbidden relationship between Philip Carlisle (Zac Efron), Barnum’s partner in the ownership of the circus, and trapeze artist Anne Wheeler (Zendaya). The soundtrack of the film is nothing short of exceptional, and won many awards in the months following the film’s release, such as the Grammy Award for ‘Best Compliation Soundtrack for Visual Media. Loren Aldred (playing Jenny Lind), Michelle Williams (playing Charity Barnum), and Keala Settle (playing Lettie Lutz) in particular deliver stunning performances, and the beautifully written tunes stay in your head long after the movie has ended. In conclusion, despite the historical inaccuracies portrayed by the film, its upbeat soundtrack, gripping storyline, and beautifully executed stunt work make it worthy of the highest praise. This film has something for everyone, children and adults alike.
ARE YOU READY TO COME OUT OF YOUR NEST?
A timely new book for children (and adults!) as Ireland continues to cautiously exit lockdown
In a new book, discovered by Gill Books’ Director Nicki Howard in the submissions pile, child and young people’s therapist Katie O’Donoghue tells the story of Little Squirrel who hasn’t left his nest since last autumn. He needs to gather nuts for the long winter to come but he’s too worried to leave his cosy nest. Luckily, Little Squirrel discovers he has lots of friends in the forest, from Wren to Snuffly Hedgehog, Grey Rabbit to Mister Fox, Old Badger to Great Stag. Will their encouragement and words of advice be enough to help Little Squirrel to venture out? Nicki Howard says of the book, ‘I was so taken by this story when Katie O’Donoghue sent it to me just before Christmas last year. I thought that it could become a lovely gentle bedtime book for young children. But it also made me think of my own mother who has been cocooning for over a year now and has needed a little coaxing to come out as lockdown comes to an end. I hope readers young and old will take comfort in Little Squirrel’s story and maybe even send it to someone in their life who’s a little wary of coming out of their nest too.’ In a difficult year for many, through the story of Little Squirrel and his adventures in the forest, readers young and old come to learn coping techniques and to realise that, although we all feel worried sometimes, we don’t have to face those worries alone. With a little help from his friends, Little Squirrel eventually emerges from his cosy nest, as the rest of us begin to, too. Written and illustrated by Katie O’Donoghue, The Little Squirrel Who Worried is a comforting story for children and adults alike. Katie, based in Kerry will be making a trip to North Kerry, Limerick and Clare this Saturday to sign copies of her book in all local bookshops.

CAROLINE’S DÓTERRA ESSENTIAL OILS
KERRY COUNTY ARTS HAVE LAUNCH THEIR PROGRAMME OF EVENTS FOR CULTURE NIGHT 2021
CAROLINE’S POD OF POSITIVITY
The newly imagined Culture Night, taking place all over Ireland on Friday September 17th, will focus on outdoor events in stunning locations across County Kerry as well as a limited number of online and live streamed events.
Welcome to our weekly column and our pod of positivity. It is here you will find little tips and tools that help us to maintain a life of health, wellness, love, and gratitude as well as all the information on dóTerra’s powerful essential oils.
A collaboration of over 30 arts groups including Catherine Young Dance to the Fanzini Brothers, glamping entertainment with St John’s Theatre Listowel to the Misneach Mural in Killorglin and John Spillane under the Muckross skies to the Sliabh Luachra Music Trail, Kerry Culture Night offers an eclectic mix of cultural arts and entertainment for the entire family. The Welcoming Project with Catherine Young Dance will curate a new dance film inspired by the African proverb ‘It takes a Village’ that stresses the importance of coming together as a community to support one another.
The Oil of Community - This week I want to bring you dōTerra’s beautiful Cedarwood essential oil, which is referred to as the oil of community. An oil that inspires feelings of belonging and assists the heart in opening to receive love and support from others, it also encourages emotional connection.
Choreographed by Eilise Sullivan, who has danced with The Welcoming Project since inception and scored by Music Director Martin Scharer with music from the original show, this new film captures the essence and beauty of this community in Kerry, sharing their talents and thoughts and stressing the importance of coming together to be hopeful and resilient in darker times.
Cedarwood is know for its rich hue and warm woody scent. It is native to cold climates, thriving in high altitudes & growing up to 100 feet. Cedarwood promotes clear skin and this oil is another one of my favourites that I like to add to my skin care routine. It’s widely used in massage for relaxation of both body and mind and it invokes feelings of emotional wellbeing. Cedarwood retails at only €19.70 and contains 285 x drops in its bottle. You can order it by contacting me on the number below. As an advocate for dōTerra, I know first hand how the oils can support the body, mind and soul and Cedarwood would be an oil that I diffuse quite regularly with Frankincense and Lavender to elevate feelings of stress and anxiety. These oils can be used in three different ways: Topically – applying them on to our skin with or without a carrier oil. Aromatically – by placing a two to three drops into a cold-water diffuser and diffusing these oils in our homes, classrooms, offices, salons or places of work and business. And the third way, internally – by adding them to your favourite food, waters or drinks, or simply by taking one drop under the tongue daily. The oils are a natural solution to care for our needs and our Family’s health needs and they can support us in many of the following that we experience from time to time, such as: Anxiety Issues, Digestive Support, Sleep Assist, Muscle Care, Stress Buster, Depression, Grief, Energy Boost, Skin Support, Immunity Boost, Allergy Assist and so much more. For extra positivity and well-being, check out our Facebook page where we have information and videos on all dóTerra’s essential oils. My newly addition of Caroline’s Fashion Fix features the fabulous French clothing collection, ‘Captain Tortue’ and guarantees to uplift all our senses and give us that feel good factor. Should you wish to view the full catalogue collection you can reach me on the number below and I will email it too you. Until next time, I leave you with our thought for the week, ‘You do not find the happy life, You make it’ Caroline X Tel: 087 292 1292

MINISTER FOLEY WELCOMES THE DECISION BY ST JOHN OF GODS TO DEFER THEIR EXIT FROM THE PROVISION OF VITAL SERVICES IN KERRY
Minister for Education and Kerry TD Norma Foley welcomes confirmation that St John of God Community Services has deferred their proposed exit from service provision in Kerry. This decision will ensure that vital services are maintained in a number of crucial facilities across the Kerry region. The St John of God Community Services has agreed to take part in a sustainability impact assessment with the HSE which will provide a basis for the organisation to continue its important service delivery role in line with a reformed model of care. Minister Foley said: “This is welcome news for service users and their families and a positive step forward to securing the provision of vital services across Kerry. St John of God Community Services have been at the heart of communities in the county and it is right that a pathway to continue these invaluable services has been achieved. I wish to thank my Cabinet colleague Stephen Donnelly for his continued engagement on this matter. I would also like to say a particular thank you to Minister Anne Rabbitte who attended a meeting facilitated by me with family representatives from St Mary’s of the Angels and has ensured that the families and guardians will continue to benefit from this service.”

The death of a loved one is one of the most challenging psychological and emotional events that we experience in the course of our lifetimes. Grief can be overwhelming and unpredictable, and coupled with the uncertainty caused by an event such as the Covid-19 pandemic, it can be more pronounced. A Grieving Daughter’s Heart is an honest and raw recollection of the deep loss felt by a daughter who lost her father to cancer during the Covid-19 pandemic. Isolated from her normal support networks and restricted in the ways she could celebrate the life of her father, Majella turned to writing to process her grief. This book faces head on that which is too often ignored: the reality of grief, its ebb and flow. Written in real time, A Grieving Daughter’s Heart catalogues in vivid detail Majella’s struggle to come to terms with her loss while experiencing the collective grief brought on by the worldwide pandemic, giving voice to the experience of so many.

Senior Hurling Championship Ballyduff travelled to Austin Stack Park on Sunday last to take on near neighbours Causeway in the 2021 County Senior Hurling Championship. Exchanges were even enough early but a goal from Causeway put them six ahead before Aidan Boyle replied with a similar score to reduce the arrears. Causeway led by six points at halftime. Ballyduff had the assistance of the breeze in the second half and at one stage got the margin down to the minimum. Both teams were reduced to 14 players and a few breaks did not go their way and we reduced the arrears but eventually lost by three points 1 – 16 to 1 – 13. We have to dust ourselves down and start all over again against St Brendan’s on this Friday evening at 7.00pm with the losers exiting the competition. NEW BOOK Congratulations to Michael Christopher Keane on the publication of his third book entitled ‘The Crosbies of Cork, Kerry, Laois and Leinster’ with the all-encompassing and intriguing sub-title ‘Bards, Imposters, landlords, politicians, aeronauts and newspaper owners’. Christopher, a native of Coolnanoonagh, Tarbert is a retired University lecturer and lives in Ovens, Cork. The book should be of particular interest to local historians in the Tarbert, Ballylongford, Ballyheigue and Ardfert parishes as the Crosbie family were involved in the transplantation of the Laois Septs to North Kerry in 1607. The story of the Crosbies provides an intriguing insight into the complex allegiances of a prominent Irish family down the centuries to the present time. The book is available locally at Tarbert Bridewell and in bookshops in Listowel and Tralee. ARD CHURAM FLAG DAY There will be a Flag Day from 9am to 9pm in Tarbert on Friday 20 August in aid of Ard Churam Fuschia Alzheimer Centre at the Hospital grounds in Listowel. WINDOW ON THE PAST On the 15 August 1893, 17 young people, 10 men and 7 women from this parish lost their lives in what was to become known as the Shannon Boating Tragedy or locally as ‘the Drowning’. After First Mass in Tarbert on that fine sunny morning of Tuesday, the Feast of the Assumption and a Church Holyday the excursion party gathered at the waters edge at Mullally’s berth waiting for two boats to carry them across the Shannon to West Clare. Unfortunately there was no sign of Mullally or the second boat and the 17 all crowded into Maurice Murphy’s boat. With some difficulty they crossed safely to Moyne Quay and spent the day in Kilrush and Kilkee. Despite advice to the contrary the party of 17 left Moyne at 7.30pm that evening with a strong ebb tide running. They managed to cross the Tarbert Race and were about 300 yards from the shore at Ardmore when the boat overturned causing all 17 on board to be drowned. By the end of September’.1893 a total of 12 bodies were recovered and buried in family graves. 5 bodies were never recovered, the river Shannon was their grave. Inquests in Carrigaholt and Tarbert found that ‘the boat was overcrowded and not in a seaworthy condition. The Scanlon family, Kilpadogue lost four children, four of the eldest of fourteen. The Lyndon family lost two children, a son and a daughter, The Bovinizer family lost two sons. Mary Murphy lost a husband and a son, the breadwinners in the family. The average age of the ten men and seven women lost in the Drowning was 24 years of age. Suaimhneas síoraí agus solas na bhFlaitheas dóibh. SEANFHOCAIL NA SEACHTAINE ‘Fiche bliain ag fás, fiche bliain faoi bhláth, fiche bliain ag trá’ - twenty years a-growing, twenty years maturing and twenty years in decline. ‘Is buan fear in a dhúiche féin ‘ - A man is permanent or happiest in his own country or own environment. ‘Ní dhéanfadh an saol capall rása d’asal riamh’ - Whatever else may come to pass, you won’t make a racehorse out of an ass. -Mo buíochas to Máire bean Ui Cualacháin as iad sea. Winners of the boys U12 Long Puck Competition at Lixnaw Community Games. 1st place Matt Cronin, 2nd place Paddy Cronin & 3rd place Jack Kelliher

LISTOWEL EMMETS
Sympathy: Listowel Emmets wish to extend their deepest sympathies to the family of Anne Rahilly nee Chute of Charles St. & Ballygologue Pk, to her husband Tom, son Thomas, daughters Jules, Maggie and Trace, brothers Roly and Frank and extended family may she rest in peace. Results Last Sunday our seniors took on Laune Rangers in the County League Division 3 final in Connolly Park Tralee. Sean Keane opened the scoring from a free after just a minute on the clock. Sam Tarrant got another point for Emmets to give them a bright start in the game. Gearoid Hassett got Laune Rangers first score of the afternoon. Laune Rangers were very dangerous going forward and Conor Beasley put off a great save to keep Emmets in the lead. John Tyther got two points in a row just before the water break to give Laune Rangers a one point lead at the water break. John Heaphy got a point for Emmets just before Cormac Mulvihill got a super point of his own off the left. Daire Cleary and Gearoid Hassett kept the scoreboard ticking for Laune Rangers to give them a two point lead at half time. Laune Rangers started the second half very strong getting four points on the bounce. Ger McCarthy was fouled in the penalty area and Sean Keane slotted home from the spot to make it a one point game again. But that was it for Emmets as Laune Rangers took complete control of the last quarter, John Tyther converted from the spot and Gearoid Hasset got a goal of his own too to give Laune Rangers the win. Full time in Tralee Listowel 1-08 Laune Rangers 3-14. Hard luck to our lads but plenty more football to look forward to this year after a successful County League, best wishes to Micheal Kennedy who picked up an injury in the closing minutes of the game. LISTOWEL ATHLETIC CLUB
The highest achievement in athletics is being an Olympian. Over the past week we all have being captivated in the trills of the track and field with Tokyo 2020 and the super performance by Irish athletes. The equivalent to the Olympics for our younger age athletes is the National T&F. Over the past weekend, Lios Tuathail AC were represented at National level by a bunch of athletes taking part in their Olympics, their highlight of the year and the highest level of competition in Ireland. The Club is more than overwhelmed and delighted with the performance of all athletes who showed that they can match their talents with the best in the Country.
Some super results from other club athletes included from our jumper family: Alex and Tally Collins both 5th in the National Long Jump final. Very tough competition and very unkind weather conditions on Saturday in Tullamore. Great achievement to get this far due to their dedication and rounds off a fantastic season for both. Well done to club coach and mom Mags, a great athletic family.

Goals were the order of the day when Beale under-20s travelled to Gallarus at the weekend. We raised the green flag five times, while our opponents found the net twice. We came away with the valuable points in the County League, Division 4, as the final score read Beale 5-13, An Ghaeltacht 2-15. We currently top the table with three wins from four games and a place in the final is on the cards. While we have played all our games, other teams have games in hand. We are keeping a watchful eye on upcoming results. The victorious team on Saturday evening lined out (13-a-side) as: Luke O’Donovan, Andrew O’Connor, Eamon Lawlor, Jack O’Sullivan, Conor Hennessy, Daithí Toomey, Diarmuid O’Mahony, Bernard O’Callaghan, Conor Toomey, Eric Daly, Cathal Farrell, Philip Byrne and Paddy O’Rourke. Beale/Finuge minors play Listowel Emmetts in the semi-final of the County League, Division 4, next Monday evening in Listowel at 7 o’clock. Beale seniors travel to Kilgarvan for the first round of the Junior Club Championship. Date to be confirmed. The 2020 North Kerry Championship against Desmonds is scheduled for the end of August.
We are elated to have a national champion in the club with Padraic McCarthy winning the U18 Discus title last Saturday. Padraic has developed through hours of practice, turning up to every training, being consistent and having a great support structure at home to be the best that Padraic can be. We wish Padraic the best of luck this weekend in the National Shot Putt.

han for Philip Byrne, Barry O’Neill for Paddy O’Rourke, Darragh Kissane and Scott Godson.
Another future star and Jumper, Steve Reidy, finished 4th in the National U13 Long Jump just missing out on the medals. Just wasn’t to be for Steve! But he did match his PB with a solid performance from this young athlete who has a great future ahead of him. Aoibhínn Harte tasted the National championship in chronic weather conditions on Saturday, in the shot putt getting through to top 8 and competed in the hammer. Keep up the hard work as you have gained valuable experience with great improvement this year. Megan Lynch, one of our most devoted athletes finished Fifth in the U18 100m at the National Finals. Megan has improved immensely over the past 2 years going from 6th in Munster to competing strongly at National level. A great example of consistent hard work paying off. Mo Farah once said, I didn’t achieve it overnight. It has been the product of many years’ struggle, and every year, my times have shown gradual improvement. We hope every athlete will look up to the likes of Padraic and Megan who has come through the ranks from U10s and today compete the best at U18 National level. We say well done to all coaches who has an input in any way in there athlete’s achievements.

FINUGE GAA
Best of luck to the Kerry Senior football team against Tyrone in the All-Ireland semi-final! Well done to the Lixnaw hurlers who got their county championship off to a winning start against Ballyheigue. The senior team’s county league campaign came to a close last week. After a league run in which the team could not find their stride, their last game was away to Reenard which resulted in a one-point loss to the high-flying home side. Looking to the future and the draws were made last week for the Junior Premier championship. Finuge find themselves in a competitive group with Ballymac, Listry & Ballydonoghue or Gneeveguilla. We await the fixtures for this competition. The U20’s had a bye last weekend and play their next round against Firies at home on this Saturday, throw-in 4pm. The minors are back in action against near neighbours Listowel on Monday August 16th at 7pm, game is in Listowel. The U15s put in a good performance in the north Kerry league against the four-way amalgamation of Ballydonoghue/Asdee/Ballylongford/Clounmacon but fell short on the scoreline 5-05 to 5-12. Next up for these lads are Beale this Wednesday, in Beale. The U13s were unlucky not to come away with something from their Tarbert game. The score finished 1-12 to 2-11. A few missed chances were the difference between the sides ultimately. Up next is an away game to An Ghaeltacht on Sunday. The U11s made the long trip to Dromid Pearses for their Go Game last week. Tough weather and a good game from the home side made for a memorable night! Next up is Brosna away this Thursday. Our U9s had a great evenings football against Bally/Asdee and earn themselves a rest this week! The U7s are out against Knocknagoshel this week having recently played St Senans - well done to all involved!

NORTH KERRY GAA
By Jack Hennessy NORTH KERRY JUNIOR LEAGUE DIVISION 4 FINAL SPONSORED BY MCCARTHYS INSURANCE, BROKERS, LISTOWEL Ballylongford 3-4 -v- 0-14 Brosna Con Brosnan Park, Moyvane on Friday evening last saw a gutsy Brosna side relied on a late Danny Moriarty point to snatch a late late victory and claim the Division 4 League title played in torrential rain throughout and certainly full credit to both teams for the quality of football the served up in terrible conditions. I suppose conditions more suited the more physical Brosna but in fairness to Bally when they looked in trouble they hit back with excellent attacking football but they will rue some terrible shooting in front of goal when scores looked on. and this proved to be their downfall in the end. The game got underway with Brosna firing in all cylinders and by the first waterbreak had put 4pts on the board without reply and were dominating in almost every sector of the field; Danny Moriarty,(2), Eamon Prenderville and Don McAuliffe slung over points. Bally were finding it hard to penetrate a solid Brosna defence in which Cillian Keane and Micheal Murphy excelled along with midfielder Dave Curtin. However Bally finally got their act together and driven on by Sean and Conor Carmody from midfield and in the space of 7mts had struck for 3 well finished goals through; Paddy O Neill, Thomas Doherty and Michael Holly; and at the break it was the Shannonsiders who had hit the front; Bally 3-2 to Brosna 0-7. On resumption Could Bally drive on ?, but again as they did in the first half Brosna who introduced 3 subs off the bench and they were to have a big say in the destination of the Title. By the 12th minute the sides were level with Brosna tagging on 4pts through; Danny Moriarty, Eamon Prenderville, (2) Dave Curtin by the 12th minute. Moriarty again and Don McAuliffe had their side ahead by 2pts before substitutes Niall Heaphy and Ciaran Dowd levelled the tie once more and as time was running out it looked as the game would go into extra time but up popped Man of the Match Danny Moriarty to claim victory. After the game Chairman of the North Kerry Football Board; Johnny Stack presented the winning trophy to a very popular Brosna captain Tadhg Leahy.
The following won 30 euro lucky dips: Michael O’ Mahony, Coolkeragh. Caoimhe Lynch, Coolkeragh. Martin Moore.
