The whole school community of Presentation Secondary School, Listowel were cele brating recently as the class of 2022 received their outstanding results and CAO offers.

This incredible group of young women are now heading off to pursue their dreams and ambitions in a wide range of college courses.

Among the options chosen by the students this year are courses in Biomedical Engi neering, General Science and Commerce in NUIG to Primary School Teaching at Mary Immaculate College, Limerick, Psychology and Biological & Chemical Science in UCC, Business in TUS , Social Care and Veterinary Bioscience in MTU, Social Care at Kerry College of Further Education, Music Performance at Ballyfermot College of Education and Product Design and Technology, UL.

SURPRISE 70TH BIRTHDAY PARTY FOR LISTOWEL’S TOMMY O’FLAHERTY

Tommy O’Flaherty walked into a cheering crowd at McCarthys bar Finuge on Saturday night, as family and friends gathered to surprise him.

Tommy is a native of Charles Street Listowel, where he was raised with four brothers and five sisters. A keen football player and musician, Tommy went on to play the drums with the famous Showband Roly Daniels and The Green Country before moving to London in 1974.

Tommy then became a publican and had his pubs in Harrow, where he still entertained the crowds with his signing and had his three children, Lisa, Joanne, and Thomas.

Tommy had come to Listowel to stay with his daughter Lisa for the races, but little did he know there had been plans for a big surprise. Family and friends who had travelled from America, London, and all over Ire land had been hiding around Listowel for a day to two before the party. His daughter Lisa had been secretly planning this for months and decided to have the party before his actual birthday in October on the week of the races as it was the perfect time to get him back to Listowel.

On Saturday, Tommy was out with two of his closest friends Maurice Sheehy and Chips, he thought they had to pop into McCarthys to collect something. He had no idea the pub was full of family and friends. The bar was decorated with balloons, banners, food, and cake, all waiting for him. When the door opened, the crowd cheered and clapped. Tommy stood still in the doorway, trying to take it all in. As he walked through the door, he glanced around the room, spotting the faces of people who travelled to see him, including his partner Margaret who Tommy was most shocked to see as he thought she was at a party in London.

Tommy said, “It was the last thing I expected as I walked through that door. It was a fantastic night. Thank you to everyone who came. It was so special to have everyone together”.

PLAN YOUR CULTURE NIGHT 2022

Culture Night is back and Kerry has a packed programme to celebrate!

On Friday 23 September, events will take place across Ireland as part of Culture Night. Culture Night is supported by the Arts Council of Ireland and Kerry County Council. Everyone, every where, is invited on the night to discover and celebrate all that our culture is today. It is an annual all-island public event that celebrates culture, creativity, and the arts. All events are free.

Kerry will be host to a programme of events on the night that offers something for everyone. The Cathaoirleach of Kerry, Councillor John Francis Flynn, looks forward to the night; “I encourage everyone to explore the e-brochure for Culture Night Kerry and see what surprises await them for Friday September 23. It will be a great night for Kerry so be sure to be a part of it.”

This year’s programme has a greater focus on late night events through additional support by the Arts Council. Late night events are scheduled for after 9pm. Street spectacles, fire shows, and gigs are all a part of the programme.

As the evening light fades in Tralee, three of Ireland’s most skilled fire performers will light up the night in the Island of Geese with their performance of Firestorm. The night-time activity will continue in Tralee Town Square with a programme of outdoor short film screenings for Square Screenings with Kerry International Film Festival. In Parklands, join the celebrations of the au tumn equinox with druids, DJs, fire and music as part of Awaken Mabon – Awaken Youth.

Across Kerry there will be celebrations of the talent and traditions we share and opportunities to discover something new.

GLOBAL IRISH FESTIVAL SERIES TO ATTRACT DIASPORA HOME TO KERRY THIS OCTOBER

‘An home our Kerry Diaspora this October. It is presented by Kerry County Council as part of the Global Irish Festival Series which is a joint initiative between Fáilte Ireland and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.

Global Irish Festival Series, An Turas Mór The Journey Home will take place in Kerry from 1st to 31st October. Featuring established world class festivals such as the Dingle Food Festival and the iQuest Adventure Series, there is plenty on offer for all festival goers from the high-octane sport enthusiast to the foodie connoisseur.

A series of experiences such as: Festival in a Box which will feature a pull-up, pop-up travelling Roadshow that will visit several towns and villages throughout the county, Annual Festivals & Spectacles which traditionally take place during October, Sports & Recreational event & activities, Clan Gatherings & Business events.

The opening ceremony begins in Dingle on 1st October with a fire and fireworks specta cle. The event will present the fire show followed by the Official Launch with Music from West Kerry and culminating in a Fireworks Display commencing at sunset. Rosemary: With a refreshing herbal smell, rosemary essential oil helps with mental fatigue, exhaustion, and the feeling of burnout. It helps to clear your mind and refocus yourself.

Bergamot: This essential oil smells very citrusy which can be very sweet but tart. Bergamot can help with reducing inflammation and pain, improve your self-esteem/confidence, and help to uplift your mood to become more positive.

CULTURE NIGHT IN ST JOHN’S THEATRE AND ARTS CENTRE, LISTOWEL

Culture Night, this Friday 23rd September, offers free arts and culture events across the country. St John’s offers an evening of theatre, poetry by Victoria Kennefick and storytelling by Sean Lyons, starting at 6.30pm. The play ‘A Dead Man’s Dreams’ features Nicholas Makin in this tragically comic look at art and the artistic process, family relationships and mortality. At 8.30pm the same evening, events move outdoor to the Harvest Wren Boys Festival.

On Thursday 29th September, join comedian Anne Gildea with How to Get the Menopause and Enjoy it! This fabulous, informative, laugh-out-loud trip through all things Menopause explores the inevitable phase of lady-life with the big questions. Tickets €20

Novelist and theatre-maker Luke Cassidy will do a week-long residency in St John’s in early Octo ber, culminating in a live theatre, free to the public, on Saturday 8th October at 8pm. Funded under the Local Live Performance Programming Scheme, it will be a unique performance of a journey into sound with violinist Molly O’Shea.

KDYS YOUTH CLUBS CALL FOR VOLUNTEERS

KDYS Youth Clubs provide safe spaces in local communities for young people to meet new friends and engage in various activities that supports their own wellbeing and development, equipping them to become active citizens in their own lives and in their communities. KDYS encourages full youth participation, where young people have a voice in decisions about their clubs’ programme of activities including what they do on club nights and trips working alongside volunteers. Youth Clubs are fully reliant on volunteers to manage and maintain as young people are not the only beneficiaries of a youth club.

Being a Youth Club volunteer is very rewarding for the volunteer as you have opportunities to make new connections in your community, learn to interact and connect with young people, grow in confidence due to taking on administration responsibility and gain a huge sense of pride for creating something that positively impacts on the lives of young people in the community. As part of the KDYS community, our volunteers also have access to quality training, which provides transferable skills in the areas of leadership, group work, safeguarding, facilitation, and mentor ing. All KDYS volunteers are screened, and Garda vetted and complete a mandatory induction training programme. KDYS youth clubs are supported by our dedicated youth club support worker, Marie Danaher.

KDYS are currently seeking volunteer leaders across the county to support the youth club de livery in their community. FOOD

Now that routine has come back again with all of the schools reopened, establish your own meal time routine again.

Plan your meals in advance and batch cook as this can leave you feeling more organised especially if you are working from home

Try out some new recipes as variety is the spice of life.... Safefood.ie, and Bord Bia have some nice recipe and meal ideas

Just be mindful of the extra foods and treats you may have in your home as you may be inclined to buy that bit extra to treat yourself .

TREATS

Don’t let the treats become a threat. There are other ways to make yourself feel better such as buying yourself a book or a magazine, treat yourself to a lovely body lotion or a nice bottle of your favourite perfume. Have a pamper night where you can have a relaxing bath, paint the nails or apply a rejuvenating face mask.

ALCOHOL

Limit your alcohol to the weekend’s. That way it can be something you can look forward to. There are also low calorie options available in the alcohol also, such as light beers, low alcohol wine and add your diet and slimline minerals as mixers for spirits.

WEEKENDS

Plan your weekends and stick to your plan. It’s important not to let your guard down too much then just because it’s the weekend. Remember after all there are 52 weekends in the year

ACTIVITY

The best way to overcome cabin fever is to get out in the fresh air, whether it is to your local park or beach. Being active will benefit you as it is good for the head and will give you a positive attitude so you will feel better. When you Feel better you Think better and then you Eat better.

ATTITUDE

What is your attitude at the moment ? Eat all around you and go out of control OR eat mind fully and stay in control. How we think determines how we feel, how we feel determines what we do next.

So think positive, feel positive, be positive.

So all of these things we can be “IN CONTROL” of so at the end of the day not only are we all responsible for ourselves but also to ourselves.

CLAR FUNDING FOR KILFLYNN

Four community projects will receive funding of €129,292.75 under the CLÁR programme.

Under this round of CLÁR funding, sports clubs, schools and community groups will receive grants of up to €50,000 to de velop a range of projects that will benefit people of all ages. The successful projects include AstroTurf pitches, community gyms, playgrounds, basketball and tennis courts, outdoor pool tables, outdoor cinemas, walkways, public toilets and car park facilities.

The four successful projects receiving funding are: • Duagh Sports and Leisure Complex is receiving €50,000 for the expansion of the car park at the Duagh Sports and Leisure Complex.

• Kerry Parents and Friends, Valentia is receiving €42,792 for the development of a sensory garden at Tigh an Oileáin, Valentia Island.

• Scoil Naisiunta on Fhaill Mhor (Foilmore NS) is receiving €31,500 for the resurfacing and improvements to the car parking area.

• Kilflynn Community Together is receiving €5,000 to develop the Kilflynn Nature Garden

Welcoming the news, Kerry Fianna Fáil TD and Minister for Education, Norma Foley said: “I am delighted that four key community projects and organisations in Kerry are being supported through this tranche of CLÁR funding.

“This round of CLÁR investment will help to enhance and upgrade a range of vital outdoor community amenities, from car parks to sensory gardens, which greatly enrich and improve the local amenities in those areas.”

Primary schools cross country: This Wednes day evening, September 21st, is the big evening for the St Brendan’s AC area primary schools cross country. The venue is Walnut Grove, Ardfert and the registrations start at 5.30pm and the first race is at 6.00pm. There will be races for first to sixth classes and med als for the first 6 in each race. There will also be an overall trophy for the top school on points. The registration fee is €2 per pupil. People are asked to enter by the top entrance to the field and not to impede residents’ park ing spaces.

Kerry Athletics: The first Kerry Athletics cross country championships will be held this Sunday, September 25th in the Demesne, Kil larney, starting at 10.00am. The juvenile even ages will be in action and parents should check the details on Facebook and club mes saging. The county championship action con tinues on Sun October 2nd (uneven ages) and Sun October 9th (relays).

Minor Football: Congratulations to our minor football team who won the B Shield County Minor Football Championship when they defeated Glenflesk at John Mitchell GAA grounds on Saturday last. Goals by Stefan Carrig and Evan Boyle left Ballyduff ahead by the narrowest of margins at halftime 2 – 4 to 1 – 6. Early goals in the second half from Jack Enright put Ballyduff in a commanding position but Glenflesk hit back to within two points before Ballyduff hit back and 1–1 from substitute Jake Segal helped steady the ship and an Evan Boyle goal helped us an easy vic tory 6 – 10 to 1 – 11. Brendan Hennessy: There was a huge turnout for the funeral of Brendan Hennessy. At the removal members of hurling clubs from North Kerry and beyond formed a guard of Honour while players from Ballyduff Senior hurling team shouldered the remains to the Church.

At his funeral mass Celebrated by Fr Brendan Walsh Michael (Teddy ) Hennessy spoke on behalf of the Family and a very emotional Mickey Whelan (former Dublin hurler, foot baller and manager) paid tribute to his friend of more than fifty years and he said Brendan was the best hurler ever to grace Gaelic Park in New York.

DEATHS

Requiem Mass for Anna Litchfield (née) Egan, formerly of Chapel Street, Tarbert and her late husband Edward took place on Saturday 17 September. Anna who was aged 84 died in Dover on 5 July 2019 and was predeceased by her husband Edward who died on 1 February 2019 aged 83. The Requiem Mass was celebrated by Fr John O’Connor assisted by Fr Philip O’Connell in St Mary’s Church, Tarbert. In the course of his eulogy, Fr John spoke of the love Anna and Edward had for each other which spanned 60 years of marriage. After the Mass burial of ashes took place for Anna and Edward in the adjoining St Mary’s Cemetery. Anna’s love for her home place was reflected in the inscription on her ‘ReturnedheadstonetoKerry’,

signifying a promise made and a promise kept by her. Helen Anne, better known as Anna, was one of four children, three boys and a girl, born to Ned and Maggie Egan (née Kelly) in Chapel Street, Tarbert. In the 1950’s like many of her friends she emigrated to the UK to pursue a nursing career which she did for all of her working life. An attrac tive looking girl she caught the attention of Edward Litchfield, a scientist, and they were married in Dover. They settled there and reared a family of two children. Anna returned to Tarbert and while her parents were alive and to celebrate family occasions. She was predeceased by her brothers William who died in 1984 and Jackie who died in 2012. Sympathy of the community is extended to her son and daughter, to her brother Paddy who is now living in Cork and to the extended Egan family, neighbours and friends.

Sympathy of the community is also extended to Emer O’Sullivan, Tarmons East on the death of her father John Gormley, Kilderry, Muff, County Donegal who died on Sunday 11 September in his 96th. year. Requiem Mass took place in the Sacred Heart Church, Muff followed by burial in the adjoining Beannachtgraveyard.

Well done to Fr John O’Connor, Tarbert who had a busy schedule last week. He celebrated a Requiem Mass and did graveside prayers on Saturday afternoon, celebrated the Vigil Mass on Saturday even ing and the 11.30am Mass on Sunday. Now approaching his 90th. year he continues to serve the Lord and the community on a daily basis. We thank him for his service to the wider parish and wish him continued good health. Minor County Club Championship Final – Group B Emmets 3-10 Spa 0-10. The first half was a pretty even contest with both sides exchanging scores in the opening minutes. Emmets struggled at times to get shots on target with Spa edge ding in front, Eddie Healy found the net for the first Emmets goal on the 19th minute as Timothy Moynihan and Aaron Carey swapped scores. Spa finished strong with further scores to leave it tied on the small whistle.

On the resumption Emmets showed their class and quick points from Sweeney and Carey followed with Sweeney taking Emmets second goal on the 42nd minute. Aaron Kennelly began to dominate at midfield and found his for wards with ease as Aaron Carey found the back of the net. Terence Houlihan of the County Board presented winning shield to Thomas Kelly. U15: After overcoming Ballyduff in the semi-final, our U15 lads are into the McElligott Oils of Asdee sponsored North Kerry League Division 1 Final against Listowel. The final has been deferred to Sunday the 2nd of October. The very best of luck to our lads who have had a really great year!

U13: The draw for the Tommy Madden Cup was made last weekend and our boys drew our near neighbours St Senans in the semi-final. The game will be played in Coolard this Sunday at 2:30pm as part of a semi-final double header - Listowel V Ballyduff are the other pairing. The very best of luck to our lads, hopefully they can get to another final before the year ends!

U11: Training wrapped up last week for the team. Well done to everyone in volved with the squad who played loads of games and had a great year. An end of year event is being organised and details will follow shortly.

U7 & U9: The season has wound down for our young starts of the future, with the final training and games now all completed. A great end of year party was

enjoyed by everyone at McCarthys Bar, Finuge recently which brought the curtain down on a year full of fun and excitement. Well done to the boys and girls who trained and played all year. Thank you to the parents for supplying transport and support! A special mention to the coaches and officers involved who make it all possible.

U15 Division 1 Shield Final Report

Duagh was the venue for this Division 1 Shield Final and both teams played out an exciting game that was in the balance right to the end. Tadgh O’Connell opened the scoring with a point for Tarbert in the 3rd minute. St Senans re plied with a pointed free from midfielder Ruairi O’Connell. A Tarbert point by Shane Stack put Tarbert back in front. That was quickly followed by a goal from midfielder Michael Coolahan. St.Senans had an excellent point by Tiernan Dennehy. Two minutes later Tarbert got their second goal of the half from cap tain and centre forward Lee Mulvihill. St Senans at the other end were unlucky after some great individual play from Tiernan Dennehy saw his shot for goal go wide of the left-hand post. Ruairi O’Connell added a point for St.Senans with a free. Tadgh O’Connell replied for Tarbert but it was St Senans who concluded the half with 2 further points from frees by Ruairi O’Connell.

The second half set the pulse racing from the very start when from the throw in Lee Mulvihill had the ball in the net for Tarbert. St.Senans attacked immediately and when excellent corner forward Ryan Hurley was fouled in the Square referee Ger D OCarroll blew for a penalty. Up stepped influential midfielder Ruairi O’Connell but unfortunately his shot went wide of the post Tadgh O’Connell had a free for Tarbert .Then on the 6th minute of the second half came St Senans second penalty when again Ryan Hurley was fouled. This time Evan O’Sullivan stepped up and made no mistake. Ruairi O’Connell added another point for St.Senans putting them right back in the game. Two quick points from Mikey Carmody and a Tadgh O’Connell free looked to have stead ied the ship for Tarbert but St Senans had other idea’s. A purple patch for them saw them score 3 goals and a point to put them in total control. The first of these goals came from Tiernan Dennehy set up by Ryan Hurley. Tadgh Doran added a point followed by 2 other goals from Ryan Hurley. St Senans now led by 4 points and with 10 minutes remaining looked on course for victory. Lee Mulvihill reduced the lead to 3 with a point and then came the equalizing goal for Tarbert by Tadgh O’Connell. Both teams tried to wrestle the initiative and it was substitute Dylan Buckley who rifled a shot to the net for Tarbert to put them back in control. Lee Mulvihill added another point for Tarbert to put them in a 4 point lead. St.Senans attacked relentlessly as injury time ap proached. They had points by Dylan OCallaghan and Ruairi O’Connell but time ran out for them leaving Tarbert winner’s by 2 points on a scoreline of Tarbert 5.08 St.Senans 4. 09. Ger D OCarroll Asdee was referee and it was great to see him having linemen and umpires. Thanks to Ger D and also Duagh for the pitch. Well done to both teams who gave a great hours entertainment. In truth any team could have won as both at times looked to be in strong positions to win and in was Tarbert that prevailed.

SAM MAGUIRE

On Saturday evening last at the capital of North Kerry the North Kerry Football Board headed by Chairperson; Mairead O Sullivan organised this special cele bration to honour the homecoming of “Sam” which was greeted in the Square, Listowel by a huge and enthusiastic supporters from all parts of North Kerry and beyond and when Kerry All Ireland medal holder Jason Foley entered the stage holding the famous trophy aloft the place erupted and a sense of relief was had by all and that eight year wait was quickly put to bed.

The weather was so kind as all concerned assembled at Frank Sheehy Park, Lis towel; where the Scoil An Chlochair, Lios Thatuail, marching band led the way down Church Street and on to the square followed by the recently crowned North Kerry County Minor champions, under 13 selections from the clubs of North Kerry and of course our distinguished guests of the evening; “Sam” and

C for the occasion was the very popular Billy Keane who was his usual self and keeping everybody in party mood.Besides Jason there were other members of the Kerry backroom staff on stage. Also on stage we had the re cently crowned Kerry Rose, Edaein O Connell and popular Traditional singer; Karen Trench who both entertained the crowd with songs; “The Land of the Gael ” and “The Kingdoms Green and Gold” respectively. The Minor North Kerry County champions and their management also made their way on stage led by their Captain Eddie Healy to a huge reception.

Prior to the stage event music and song was provided by Listowel Scor Group, Ballydonoghue/Lisselton Comhaltas, Ballybunion/Asdee/Ballylongford/Tar bert Comhaltas group who also kept the crowd entertained beforehand.

Overall an occasion to savour and in fairness the people of North Kerry can be proud of their contribution to making this a night to remember.

Well done and congratulations to Feale Rangers who move onto a quarter final in the County Championship. Feale Rangers had two comprehensive wins over St Brendans and South Kerry, and will play Templenoe in the last remaining group stage.

County Junior Clounmacon/MoyvaneChampionshipladies progressed further in the County Junior Cham pionship last weekend, defeating Kilcummin in the quarter final, on a score of 5.10 to 2.12.

Another tremendous display by the ladies with some tenacious defending and all forwards scoring.

Of the 15 Kerry players who started out at the Munster Matchplay Finals in both Bishopstown and St Annes in Cork last Saturday only one player would make it through to Sunday’s semi-final stage in Listowel’s Ger Guerin in the Intermediate Mens grade.

On Saturday in St Annes Ger defeated Tipperary’s Ken Hayes in Round 1 3&2, Limerick’s Mike O’Donnell 6&5 in the Last 16 while he was a 5&4 winner over another Tipperary player in Bobby O’Donnell in the quarter-finals to make it through to Sunday’s semi-finals which switched to the Bishopstown course. He was facing Darren O’Leary from St Annes who had defeated Deerpark’s Erin Moloney in the quarter-finals the previous day by 5&4.

Ger was within one hole after the first 18 and two down with nine to play but O’Leary grew stronger in the closing stages to go on and record a 5&3 win before going on to win the title outright afterwards. Both Ger and Erin were two of only four Kerry players to make it through to the quarter-finals as both Deerpark’s Damien Fleming and Tralee’s Michael Conway were defeated at that stage in the senior grade.

Damien had won an all Kerry Last 16 encounter with Tralee’s Alan Hobbart 2&1 before he was defeated at the last hole by eventual tournament runner-up De clan Freeman of Fermoy. Michael had claimed a narrow win over Douglas’ Eoin Keating in the Last 16 but he lost out to Keating’s club-mate Rob O’Donoghue in the quarter-finals by 4&2.

The two ‘Tralee v Listowel’ encounters in the Mens Senior Round 1 ended in a 1-1 draw between the clubs in terms of match winners. Jamie Blake defeated Jake Shine 1up while it went to the third playoff hole between Ryan Allman and Tony Blake before Allman won at the 39th hole. Both Jamie and Ryan bowed out in the Last 16 however.

All three of Kerry’s Junior players failed to make it past the first round. Listow el’s Dylan Sweeney conceded a walkover to Hillview’s Sean O’Connor, Michael Creagh was defeated by eventual runner-up Dean Lonergan from Cork while Listowel’s Tom Kelly was defeated by Bishopstown’s Steve Austin.

This Sunday (September 25th) sees Deerpark host their Scratch Cup events as the club are reverting back to 54 holes for the three Mens grades for the first time since 2017. Anyone still looking to enter is asked to contact Sean Kelly from the club in regards to their timesheet for the day.

The Word of God is very sobering and real in how it describes the brevity of life . I read in the book of James 4:13-14” .....You do not know what tomorrow brings. For your life is like the morning fog- it’s here for a little while,then it’s gone.”

a bible believing Christian it becomes ever clearer to me that this life is the waiting room for the next life. Sadly, I also recognise that l have wasted so much of this preparation time on foolishness. The Word of God has a lot to say about how we use time. In Psalm 90:12 we ask the Lord to “Teach us to number our days that we may gain a heart of wisdom. “

Ephesians 5:14 urgently calls us to “Awake you who sleep. Arise from the dead, and Christ will give you light.” And again, in verse 15 we are told to “ ...be careful how you live, not as fools but as those who are wise. Make the most of every opportunity for doing good in these evil days.”

The Gospel of Matthew 6:33 directs me to “.... seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness and all these other things (food, drink and clothing )will be given to you as well.”

The Word of God tells everyone who chooses to follow Jesus how we can use our time on earth to build up treasures in Heaven. The Gospel of Matthew 6:19 puts it like this “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal; but lay up for yourselves treasures in Heaven where neither moths nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is there your heart will be also.”

God is the most incredible, astonishingly loving Father Who wants everyone to know His love. “Seek Him while He may be found. Call upon Him while He is near.“ Isaiah 55:6
