LEE STRAND AWARDED GOLD MEMBERSHIP IN PRESTIGIOUS ORIGIN

GREEN SUSTAINABILITY PROGRAMME

Lee Strand was recognised once again for their exceptional performance and commitment to sustainability with Gold Membership at the Origin Green 2022 awards. Origin Green is Ireland’s food and drink sustainability programme led by Bord Bia – The Irish Food Board. Gold Membership is awarded to companies who demonstrate an exceptional annual performance on their sustainability targets.

Gearoid Linnane, CEO commented “We are delighted Lee Strand is recognised once again with the prestigious Origin Green Gold Membership for our commit ment to sustainability. In Lee Strand environmental management and sustain ability are key elements of our business model, from launching 100% renewable cartons, to reducing water usage and energy efficiency. This is a great achieve ment by our sustainability team who are continually striving for higher levels of environmental excellence. We would also like to thank Veronica Kennelly from the Munster Technological University who assisted Lee Strand in the development of our Origin Green plan.”

Origin Green continues to evolve to ensure Bord Bia is helping Irish food and drink companies to remain up to date with the evolving needs of trade customers and their consumers, globally. With the introduction of the Origin Green credits system in early 2022, it is now easier to identify members who are performing at a high level or excelling in their sustainability performance.

To retain ongoing membership of Origin Green, companies must subsequently submit an annual review to demonstrate clear progress against the established targets and initiatives set. This annual review is subject to an independent thirdparty review by their verification authority Mabbett. This ensures minimum pro gramme requirements are consistently met and maintained. Companies receive credits for their performance in areas such as raw material sourcing; water and energy efficiency; waste reduction; packaging; and social sustainability. Origin Green has established five different membership tiers based on company size and turnover, so that a real diversity of industry is reflected in the overall Gold membership.

HUNDREDS ATTEND EIRGRID COMMUNITY APPRECIATION DAY IN MOYVANE

Communities across north Kerry attended a Community Appreciation Day hosted by EirGrid and Moyvane Community Sports Hall recently. The Kilpadogue Knockanure Community Appreciation Day attracted large crowds who got to meet Kerry GAA star and All Ireland winner, Jason Foley, along with the Sam Maguire. The event was held to celebrate 15 community groups and initiatives that benefited from the €205,000 EirGrid Community Sponsorship Fund.

Proceedings were opened by Brian Kiely of Moyvane Community Sports Hall, who welcomed the commu nities of Tarbert, Moyvane and Knockanure to the event. Those in attendance enjoyed outdoor activities, a barbecue, and entertainment from the Cronin School of Irish Dancing, along with music by local musicians.

Speaking about the event, Sinead Dooley, head of public engagement, EirGrid, said: “We are delighted so many people from across north Kerry came out to this community celebration. It is so important to recog nise the invaluable voluntary work being done in these communities, and at EirGrid we’re proud to support these efforts through this sponsorship fund.” “We would like to thank the committee of Moyvane Community Sports Hall who jointly hosted the event, and to all those involved in giving of their time so generously to make it such an enjoyable day,” added Dooley.

Case studies of each project were displayed in the sports hall, with many of those involved in the projects, speaking about the funding. One such project to benefit, was Tarbert Comprehensive School, which re ceived funding to aid in the replacement of its gymnasium floor. Principal of the school, Richard Prendiville said: “The assistance EirGrid gave to us in the school has been great and it’s great to have a day like this to celebrate and acknowledge what they’ve done for us”. “We were lucky beneficiaries of €10,000 from Eir Grid, towards our long-term gym project. Our gym was ageing, had a 40-year-old concrete tiled floor. Now we have a raised timber floor and over 500 students and over 60 staff, clubs and societies, Tarbert mens and ladies football teams use it. It’s a wonderful resource to have,” added Mr Prendiville.

Speaking about another project to receive funding, Tom Fitzgerald of Knockanure Community Develop ment Association said the funding helped the association update its plumbing and heating system, along with the provision of CPR training, a toilet refit, and much more. “We were delighted with the sponsorship from EirGrid, especially the upgrade of the heating and plumbing. The old schoolhouse is used for school parties, dance classes CPR training, birthdays and communions,” explained Fitzgerald.

The association also provides up to 115 meals locally each week through its Meals-on-Wheels initiative. Seamus Roche, of Moyvane Development Association, which received funding towards upgrading a na ture trail walk, said it was “great to have a community event like this”.

SAN RITA WELLNESS

Welcome to San Rita Wellness weekly column…We hope you are safe and well

Now that the Listowel Races are over for many of us it is a time settle in to winter with the warm cosy fires. It is also a time of the year where we make plans and look forward to the months ahead with Halloween and Christmas to look forward to.

These are ideal opportunities for us all to plan ahead for upcoming events where we want to look and feel great. It’s not all about battening down the hatches and going into total hiberna tion. Look at your calendar and plan for certain dates coming up that will help to motivate you and shorten the winter.

This week we are going to focus on how important it is for you and your well being to keep yourself accountable to your commitment to feel and look better . There are many areas where accountability plays a big part in your weight loss and wellness journey.

So, let’s break them down and ask yourself are you actually ticking all the boxes.

Very often we can blame others for “making” us eat or drink something we actually hadn’t planned on having which can very often be the start of the slippery slope that we are all familiar with..Blaming others for our actions is an easy way of letting ourselves “off the hook “for our own accountability. Your choices are your decisions. Always remember when you point the finger at someone the rest of your fingers are pointing back at YOU.

Accountability is all about keeping records.

Calories

It is a proven fact when you keep an account of what you eat and drink you are more aware and mindful of your calorie intake. By keeping a track of your calories you are less likely to “forget” the little things that can all add up in the end. Keeping track in a notebook or journal can show you what kind of foods you eat, when you eat and it can also identify your trigger times. There are also some great free apps you can download on your phone to keep track of your daily calorie intake.

Goals

Setting yourself mini goals can help you progress on your weight loss and wellness journey. When setting yourself a mini goal keep it “ Specific” “ Relevant “ and “ Time Bound “. Keeping a weekly record of your mini goals can help your motivation and commitment to stick with it and know that it will be worth it. Remember the saying “ Slow progress is better than No progress “

Weight

Being accountable to somebody else with your weight other than yourself is very important as we do tend to leave ourselves off the hook quite easily at times. By doing this you are making a commitment not alone to yourself but to somebody else also. This is why the weekly check in with San Rita Wellness is so beneficial for our members. Being account able to someone else gives you support also. You can lose weight for yourself but it doesn’t always have to be by yourself.

So pick up the phone and call us now. “It will be a weight off your mind” or call in to any of our “In Person Meetings”

For extra support and for weekly accountability check us out on Facebook San Rita Well ness or sanritawellness.ie for details of our “In Person Meetings“ “At Home Service“ or our “One to One Service“

NB - Our weekly “In Person Meetings” take place in Listowel Community Centre every Wednesday and in The Ballybunion Health and Leisure Centre every Thursday.

ALL THE BROKEN PLACES

From the author of the globally bestselling, multimillion-copy classic, The Boy in the Striped Pyja mas, comes its astonishing and powerful sequel.

Ninety-one-year-old Gretel Fernsby has lived in the same mansion block in London for decades. She leads a comfortable, quiet life, despite her dark and disturbing past. She doesn’t talk about her escape from Germany over seventy years before. She doesn’t talk about the post-war years in France with her mother. Most of all, she doesn’t talk about her father, the com mandant of one of the most notorious Nazi concentration camps.

Then, a young family moves into the apartment below her. In spite of herself, Gretel can’t help but begin a friendship with the little boy, Hen ry, though his presence brings back memories she would rather forget. One night, she witnesses a violent argument between Henry’s mother and his domineering father, one that threatens Gretel’s hard-won, selfcontained existence.

Gretel is faced with a chance to expiate her guilt, grief and remorse and act to save a young boy - for the second time in her life. But to do so, she will be forced to reveal her true identity to the world. Will she make a different choice this time, whatever the cost to herself?

Congratulations to Feale Rangers on reaching the Quarter Final of the Senior County Championship after an impressive win over Templenoe in Templenoe on Sunday last. They are now Group 4 winners after three wins from three. The first half was a tricky one with Templenoe opening the scoring as both teams took time to settle. The move of the half saw Cillian Trant breaking well and played off a good pass to Barry O’Mahony for a finish that took Feale Rangers to a three-point lead into the break 1-6 to 0-6. Bryan Sweeney had an impres sive first half at midfield alongside Trant as their good start to this year’s Kerry SFC continued. Feale Rangers added another three in the opening minutes of the second half and they didn’t look back final score Feale Rangers 1-14 Tem plenoe 0-10. Impressive for Feale Rangers were Barry O’Mahony, Cillian Trant, Bryan Sweeney and Cathal Keane in goal. Feale Rangers await their quarter final opponents as we send best wishes to John James and team and all those involved from Emmets.

U13: The U13s journey in the North Kerry Championship Tommy Madden Cup continues after putting in another strong display in the semi-final against St Senans last Sunday in Coolard. After a really sharp opening where they scored 1-03, St Senans then hit back with three points on the bounce. However, our lads picked it up again and would go in at half time leading 4-04 to 0-03 points. The second half saw plenty open football from both sides but there was only going to be one winner as that blistering opening! Final score Finuge 5-12 to St Senan’s 1-06. This is the second year in a row making it to the final and the team hope to go one better than 2021 when they meet Listowel in four weeks’ time on Sunday the 23rd of October. This final game will again be played in Coolard. Well done boys!

U11: An end of year event is in the process of being organised and details will follow shortly.

FINUGE/ST SENANS LADIES: The ladies county semi-final was played last Sun day in Lixnaw, when Na Gael came to visit. In a tight affair the teams were level at half time 1-05 each but it was the Finuge/St Senans that held the advantage at the end on the scoreline FFS 1-10 to Na Gaeil’s 1-09! BEALE 4-12 -v- DUAGH 3-6

Despite a light drizzle prior to the start of the game that quickly disappeared it was a perfect evening for football played at Jack Walsh Memorial Park, on Sun day September 25th for this eagerly awaited clash of these great rivals; Beale and Duagh for the right to become Division 2 North Kerry League Champions and after a very competitive contest in which both teams must be comple mented for the high standard of skilful football they displayed giving the huge travelling supporters plenty to cheer about. The Seasiders prevailed at the end but in fairness to Duagh the 9pt winning margin didn’t do themselves justice as they enjoyed plenty possession; however on saying that Beale were fully deserving winners and a blistering start to the second half by the Seasiders and goals at vital times when Duagh were edging a little closer killed off the game. I suppose the real difference between the teams was that Beale were always that bit sharper when it came to scoring whereas Duagh were having difficulty trying to find the target. The game got underway with the sides hav ing a wide each as the game ebbed and flowed and defences were in control of the situation; Duagh were unlucky at a goal attempt but a magnificent block by Darragh O Connor prevented the ball from entering the net. If anything Du agh were just about shading the issue at this stage but were not taking their chances. Eventually and first off the mark was Odhran Buckley with 2 pointed frees that was followed 3mts later by a Joe o Connell goal. Lee Meehan from a free tied up the game at 3pts to 1gl by the 16th minute and from the kickout Cormac Scanlon won possession and saw his piledriver hit off the upright with goal written all over it. For the remainder of the half it was nip and tuck with Beales Brody Mulvihill;(2) and Odhran Buckley hitting the scores without reply from the opposition. Half Time; Beale; 0-7 Duagh 1gl. The second half got un derway in explosive fashion and by the 7th minute of this half Beale had gone 2-9 to 1-1 ahead with Leigh Meehan and Shay Murphy banging in the goals as Fiachra Buckley and Cillian McMahon exchange points. 7mts remaining Beale 4-11 Duagh 3-4 .Duagh Still kept plugging away as Cillian McMahon pointed and P J Dowling found the net after 12mts.The Seasiders were quick to reply with further goals through Leigh Meehan and Odhran Buckley. At this stage it was game over Joe O Connell got his second goal of the evening for Duagh as Duaghs impressive forward Cillian McMahon kicked over a few points but it was never going to be enough as Beale finished well ahead. Both sides had impressive players; for Beale; Killian Scanlon, and Dara O Connor led the de fence, Daithi Tyrell and Cormac Scanlon held their own after a slow start while in attack Leigh Meehan and Odhran Buckley always looked dangerous. For a gallant Duagh, Joe O Connell and Gavin Dillon had a great tussell with their direct opponents, Cillian McMahon kicked a few lovely points, P J Dowling took his goal well. Ronan Sheridan and Alan O Brien played well at the back. After the game P J Mulvihill, Secretary of the North Kerry Football Board was on hand to present Beales joint captains; Cormac Scanlon and Dara O Connor with the winning Shield amid great celebrations between players, Management and supporters alike.

Referee; Tom Walsh (Listowel Emmets) must be complemented for having his own match Officials at the game.

DUAGH / LYRE COMM. GAMES

National Finals

Last Saturday Duagh/Lyre community games had five participants represent ing Kerry at National finals in UL. First up were those competing in cycling on grass with an early start on the road. Thankfully it was a beautiful sunny day and everyone was ready to give it gusto. First up was U12 cycling on grass: Eamon Dennehy. This was Eamon’s first experience of National finals and he had plenty miles of training in the legs done. Eamon is a tough nut and rarely seen without his bike so this was going to be a difference experience but one he would relish. Eamon got off to a great start and found himself in third position, he fought bravely to get into second but it wasn’t to be, he tried so hard coming into the hot spots upping the tempo. A brilliant finish to the final bringing home a fantastic bronze National medal and a proud family cheering him on. U12 girls next up was Kate Sheridan no stranger to the National finals having been third in u10 hurdles in 2019 and silver in cycling on grass in 2021. Kate was ready for action and the training miles were completed. Kate got off to a great start getting off in second, Kate held that position through the hot spots and to the finish line bringing home a National silver medal another to add to her collection. Congrats Kate a super talented girl and supported by her National medal winning brothers Luke and Ronan along with her parents. U14 cycling on grass: Up next was the quite, unassuming and very talented Fiona O’Brien. A very sporty girl who can put her hand to anything she tries. This event was to be no exception, from the gun off she took and stayed in the lead the whole way round the course. Fiona’s first experience at National finals was something special bringing home a National gold medal, congratulations champ. Fiona had plenty support from her parents. Special thank you to our amazing coaches and volunteers Andy Keane and John Bunyan they have as sisted these participants in achieving their goal to get to National finals and bringing home the medals was the icing on top. Thanks to their parents and supporters for the drives, encouragement and a great day out.

U17 Marathon : Twins Noelle and James Dillon were flying the flag for Kerry and Duagh/Lyre Community Games. Both have been having a fantastic season and have really started to excel. Noelle finished 4th individually in a super race with a tough course and gold with team Kerry. James Silver with team Kerry. This was James first experience of National finals. It was fantastic that both won a National medal in their final year at Community Games. Dreams do come true and we are so delighted for twins Noelle and James, hard work and perseverance has paid off. Congratulations to you both enjoy the celebrations, supported by their family.

MEANING OF LIFE

“You can say what you want, but no one ever came back to tell us what it’s like, did they? that’s the problem.”

We often hear these words expressed as people ponder the existence of an afterlife, perhaps after the death of a loved one. The parting shot is generally “no one ever came back”.

Death is awful. Who among us hasn’t experi enced the terrible pain of separation from a loved one through death? And knowing that loss is part of life doesn’t make it any easier. It makes no sense.

And yet it would make even less sense if death was the end of this life for all eternity.

I am a bible believing Christian. I accept that the bible is the Word of God. In it l read that Jesus did come back from the dead. In Mark 10:33 Jesus tells His disciples “Behold...the Son of Man will be betrayed...they will kill Him. And the third day He will rise again.”

Jesus came back as He had promised. And in doing so He conquered death for all who accept Him as Lord and Saviour, God and Friend.

In 1 Thessalonians 4: 13-14 the Apostle Paul says to us “Brothers and sisters l do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind who have no hope. For we believe that Jesus died and rose again and so we believe that God will bring with Jesus those who have fallen asleep in Him.” Here we have the sure and certain promise from Jesus Christ Himself that there is life after death. And l believe Him more than l would believe anyone else coming back to tell me!!!

And again in the Gospel of John chapter 11 verses 25-26 Jesus speaks to us “l am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die. Do you be lieve this?” In the Word of God l read all about the life hereafter. I do believe it and l look for ward to it. It fills me with real hope.

Otherwise life makes no sense. If you require any further information, you can call LCF at 087 9529907

Yours sincerely, Bridie (Dillon) Hartney
