TIDY TOWNS ANNUAL GOLF CLASSIC

Last Friday, 7th October, Ballybunion Tidy Towns in conjunction with St. John’s Restoration Fund held their Annual Golf Classic at Ballybunion Golf Club. Thirty-three teams were signed up to participate. Local players as well as those from nearby towns and counties and from as far away as the UK enjoyed a mostly sunny day with a few morning showers and small bit of wind. But, everyone had a fabulous time supporting the two local charities.

Tidy Towns would like to thank all those who signed up with us and played on the day. We must, also, express a huge appreciation for the generous support the business community offered in the way of sponsorship, as well as team play, at the tournament and to the Advertiser for their constant support. Unfortunately, there are so many others that we are not able to list them here, but they were well advertised during the classic itself and will be displayed on the Tidy Town information board at SuperValu our main sponsor.

Tidy Towns would also like to give a special thanks to John Eggleston, General Manager, Bryan O’Callaghan, Pro, and the staff of Ballybunion Golf Club. We truly appreciate the management and staff for all they did to make the event go off smoothly and enjoyably.

Competition prizes were awarded at the 7:00 o’clock gathering in the Golf Club lounge by Tidy Town’s Chairman, Noel Nash. Unfortunately, not all winner were able to attend, but those in attendance were able to receive their Ballybunion Golf Club Pro Shop voucher on the night. Others will be contacted personally to receive their winnings.

The winners in the Classic were:

For Longest Drive: Owen McCurry (photo top right)

For Closest to the Pin: Terry Sonner (photo right)

Third Prize: Patrick Byrn’s team

Second Prize: Rory Meighan accepting for Kevin O’Callaghan’s team (photo far right)

First Prize: John Culhane’s team

A special thanks goes to Alan O’Meara, Pro of Blarney Golf Club, who provided four special four-ball prizes. The prizes were awarded by randomly drawing four score cards from among those who played on the day. The winners of the four ball matches including buggies were: Mike Counihan’s team, Liam Murphy’s team, Dan McCabe’s team and Peter Eng lish’s team. We hope all 16 players will enjoy their day in Blarney.

The funds raised during the classic will go a long way to supporting the enchance ment and beautification of our lovely seaside town. Since Tidy Towns is a com pletely 100% volunteer organisation with no on-going funding, we depend on this important fundraiser to help us carry out our work. We look forward to continue making Ballybunion beautiful.

SAN RITA WELLNESS

Welcome to San Rita Wellness weekly column…We hope you are safe and well

Welcome to San Rita Wellness weekly column

Everyone dreams about achieving their Weight loss and Wellness goals (and staying there) but how many of us actually put the time into planning how we will reach and maintain our overall target. Preparation, Planning and Focus are essential in staying motivated for your long term Weight loss and Wellness journey.

Many of us spend a great deal of our time planning the logistics of family life, such as budgeting, child care, pick ups, drop offs, work, shopping, family meals and paying bills. But when it comes to focus ing on our own health and wellbeing we somehow just run out of time and very often we end up at the bottom of the “To do List “

MAKE TIME FOR YOU!

15 x 7 = 105 minutes

This week we want you to think about how you can set aside 15 minutes out of each day over the week just for YOU and how you can use that 15 minutes to help you achieve your Weight loss and Wellness goals. By doing this you are actually creating 105 minutes over all just for YOU in your week. There are a lot of “you’s“ in what we just said there , but after all YOU are important.

What part of the day could you set aside those 15 minutes for yourself this week? Morning?

Lunchtime?

Kids in bed at night?

It is also important to think in advance what you want to do with that 15 minutes and how that 15 minutes each day can help you achieve your goals.

Things you can do in 15 minutes

* Write your shopping list.

* Keep a diary of what you eat and drink

* Reorganise the kitchen press (Tempting snacks out of sight)

* Plan your meals for the following day.

* Choose a new recipe to try * Get out for a short walk rather than sitting on the couch.

YOU ARE WORTH IT!

Know your worth: Self-care is important to maintain a healthy relationship with yourself as it produces positive feelings and boosts your confidence and self-esteem. Also, self-care is necessary to remind yourself and others that you and your needs are important too. By looking after your own health and well being you are actually filling up your own cup, as the saying goes “ you can’t pour from an empty cup “

Just before we finish up, 3 things to keep in mind

Make the time as nobody else may make it for you.

Think about what you want to achieve for your overall wellness.

about what and how you can do it in that 15 minutes.

ONCE UPON A ROAD

Lyreacrompane native, Joe Harrington, has just pub lished a book on very first Butter Road from Kerry to the Cork Butter Market. Joe describes the book, ‘Once Upon a Road’ as a “search for the olden days on a sixty-mile journey through 275 years of time”.

The subject of the book is the road from Ballyduhig, near the Six Crosses, through Lyreacrompane, Castleisland, Cordal, Tooreencahill, Millstreert, Aubane, Vicarstown, to Kerry Pike outside Cork City. It was originally built as a tollroad/turnpike, under a 1747 Act of Parliament. The man behind the venture was a John Murphy from Castleisland. ‘When I was growing up, I remember the dispensary at Pike, halfway between Lyreacrompane and Listowel. I often wondered why it was named Pike. Researching the history of this road over recent years I discovered that Pike in fact alluded to a turnpike/toll gate on this spot from the early 1750s to 1809. It was one of six that John Murphy was entitled to erect on the road all the way to Cork up until the latter date”, Joe explained.

The book ‘Once Upon a Road’ with 364 full colour pages and 315 im ages, maps and photos which Joe was delighted to have printed locally by Walsh Colour Print, Castleisland with graphic design by Easy Design, Causeway.

COISTE NA NÓG

Congratulations to our U15 footballers who are into the final of the U15 North Kerry Championship after a com prehensive win over St Senans in Ballybunion on Sunday morning. Conditions were far from ideal for both teams but it was St Senans that capitalised on the throw-in with a goal in the first minute of the game. Ballyduff responded well and scored four points before St Senans managed to get on the scoreboard again, however a super goal from Callum Carey just before half time meant that we went into the dressing rooms three points ahead 1 – 5 to 1 – 2. The second half started with both teams trading points, but the Ballyduff boys had gotten into their stride and along came further goals from Jake Segal and Fionn Houlihan and a sec ond goal from Callum Carey, leaving St Senans with too big a deficit to overcome. Ballyduff will now meet Listowel in the final in two weeks.

The Bernard O’Callaghan Memorial Championship in Association with McMunns Bar & Restaurant Bal lybunion, Eamon O’Donoghue Memorial Cup. This competition began on last weekend where at the local O’Rahilly Park on Saturday 15th October Ballyduff last years defeated finalists played Brosna at 3pm.A good crowd witnessed the first upheaval in the competition when Brosna pipped the favourites by a single point to advance to the Quarter Finals. Then on Sunday 16th October at Tarbert it was the pairing of Ballydonoghue and Tarbert at 3pm. Again another upheaval here with firm favourites Ballydonoghue making their exit from this year’s campaign by losing to Tabert by a single point also. Therefore, it is Tarbert and Brosna now through to the Quarter Final draw. While also on Saturday in Listowel: Listowel Emmets will play St Senans at 3pm. Sunday 23rd will see Duagh play Moyvane in Duagh at 1pm while Asdee will play Finuge at Jack Walsh Park Asdee at 3pm. BEALE GAA

Beale seniors are through to the final of the County Novice Championship. All roads lead to Listry on Saturday when we take on Kilgarvan at 3.30.

In wintery conditions, we overcame Asdee on Saturday in the semi-final. At the end of a rather low-key first half, we went in at the interval four points to the good, 0-6 to 0-2. We drove on from there and our opponents found scores difficult to come by. We ran out comfortable winners on a score of 1-14 to 1-04. .

We received a bye in the opening round of the North Kerry Senior Football Championship. The draw for the quarter finals takes place on Sunday evening and will be streamed live on North Kerry Facebook page at 5.30pm.

Our juniors compete for the North Kerry Intermediate Cup. Details yet to be confirmed

There was no jackpot winner in this week’s Beale Lotto. There were 2 Match-3 winners. Conor Liston and Keith Hughes each won €50. Numbers drawn were 12, 13 19 and 29. Next week’s jackpot is €1,900. The boys and girls of Kilconly National School were recently crowned North Kerry champions and then won their way through to the County semi-final of Cumann na mBunscol competition. Last Thursday, they put up a gallant per formance against Loughfouder. It was not their day and just one point separat ed the teams at the final whistle. Well done, boys and girls and management. .

Coming off the back of a great win over Tarbert last week, the boys and girls of Scoil Íosagáin took on Glenderry this week in their Cumann na mBunscol game. They put in a great effort but were defeated by a very impressive op position. Well done to players and management on a great game.

U15: Our lads togged out last Sunday morning for a 12pm start in Clounmacon in the North Kerry Division 1 Championship semi-final against Listowel. In another tight and exciting game between these two teams, our neighbours came out on top by 3 points on the score-line Finuge 2-08 to Listowel’s 4-05. Our boys were unlucky not to convert more possession into scores. This brings the curtain down on a memorable year for this squad. They performed really well in the county league coming second in their group, won div three of the Feile competition and represented Kerry in the regional section getting to the final, got to NK league final and only to loose out by a single point. Well done to the team and management and they can look forward with optimisim.

U13: The U13s are training and preparing for their North Kerry Championship final after their win over St Senans in the semi-final. The final for the Tommy Madden Cup against Listowel will be played this Sunday the 23rd of October at 12pm in Coolard, the appointed referee is Mike Hennessy. The very best of luck to the boys and management as the preparations continue. This event is spon sored by the Madden family and it is a really special event which honours the memory of Tommy Madden and raises funds for Our Ladies Hospital Crumlin. Do drop down to Coolard and support this very worthwhile event along with supporting our young footballers, now in its 20th year.

FEALE RANGERS: The county championship semi-final against Mid Kerry went ahead last Saturday evening in very tough wet and windy conditions. Mid Kerry got off to a storming start and streaked ahead with the aid of a signifi cant wind. The game was out of reach by the time the teams switched sides but Rangers went down fighting to the end. Final score Feale Rangers 0-09 to MidKerry’s 0-15. Tommy Madden U13 Memorial Championship Final 2022

This competition was put in place in 2004 in honor of the late Tommy Madden, Ballydonoghue and every year since it has grown in strength. Tommy was a pupil of Coolard National School and was part of the team of 2003 that won the Cumman na MBunscoil competition.

This is the 19th year of the competition and there is always great interest shown by all clubs when it comes to competing. The final is always played in the Denis Dowling Park, Coolard and the gate proceeds on the day go to our Ladies Children’s Hospital Crumlin where Tommy was a patient.

The final this year will take place on Sunday 23rd October 12 noon between Finuge and Listowel Emmets. Can the Finuge boys get it over the line this year as they were finalist last year or will it the Emmets who haven’t been in the final since 2019? MEANING OF LIFE

Someone jokingly said that a revolving door is now being installed at No.10 Downing Street!!! After Kwasi Kwarteng’s quick exit, who’s next l wonder??

I think the late Robin Williams’ definition of politics is the funniest ever. He said “poli is the Latin word for many and tics are blood sucking creatures. “

But on a more serious note all we need to do is tune in to the state of world politics to see that it’s in an awful mess. And will be. Why? Because human beings are fundamentally flawed.

That’s all of us.

Scripture has a lot to say about this. Psalm 118:8-8 tells us “It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in man. It is better to trust in the Lord than to put trust in princes.”

Jeremiah 17:5 puts it even more bluntly. “Thus says the Lord, cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart departs from the Lord.”

Humans are weak, mortal, and unreliable be cause we are limited. Even the most powerful leaders are limited in what they can do. As hu mans, Leaders lack supreme authority and there

are many things beyond their control, including the fickleness of people, the laws of nature and the passage of time. Leaders don’t always have the personal interests of all of us at heart. How can they? There are too many of us. They mostly have their own personal and political interests at heart.

Only God has the eternal knowledge and the power and experience to give us the right help and answers we need at the right time. God is the only true supreme Leader, who is capable of keeping the interests of all us at heart all of the time. After all He created everything. He is faith ful and He always does what He promises.

Deuteronomy 7:9 puts it like this, “Know there fore that the Lord your God is God, the Faith ful God who keeps His covenant of loving devotion for a thousand generations of those who love Him and keep His commandments.”

Again in 1 Thessalonians 5:24 l read “Faithful and absolutely trustworthy is He who calls you....

1 Timothy 1:17 says it all. “Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God be honour and glory forever and ever. Amen. “
