GABRIEL FITZMAURICE –A LIFE IN POETRY & COMMUNITY
Gabriel Fitzmaurice - poet, broadcaster, writer, translator, singer and raconteur – will be honoured at a special event in St. John’s Theatre & Arts Centre, Listowel on Friday November 11th. Gabriel turns 70 this year and the event is being organ ised by Kerry Writers’ Museum to celebrate his immense literary career and his service to his local community. It follows the awarding of the John B. Keane Lifetime Achievement Award to Gabriel at Listowel Writers’ Week earlier this year.
Deeply rooted in the literary tradition of North Kerry, Gabriel Fitzmaurice has been called “poetry’s answer to John B Keane” (Books Ireland) and his poems have been described as “comparable to Burns for their insight and lyricism” (The Irish Times). Born in the village of Moyvane where he still lives, Gabriel taught and later served as principal at his local national school for more than three decades but is now happily retired. He is the author of more than sixty books, including collections of poetry in English and Irish as well as several collections of verse for children.
Speaking in advance of the event, Cara Trant, Executive Director of Kerry Writers’ Museum stated that “we are delighted to host this event in honour of one of Kerry’s and indeed Ireland’s leading poets. Gabriel has given tremendous support to our work in the museum, and he has been an invaluable source of advice and knowledge to me in developing our cultural programmes. We feel it is only fitting and overdue that his contribution to the cannon of Kerry & Irish literature, but also his dedicated and tireless work in his own community is recognised & celebrated in this milestone year of his life.”
The event will feature a variety of artists from the world of poetry, music and song including poets Eileen Sheehan, Theo Dorgan and Jo Slade; former Kerry footballer and broadcaster Dara Ó Cinnéide; author and former Director of the Blasket Island Centre Micheál De Mordha; Causeway musician Richard Casey and traditional singer Karen Trench, as well as other invited guests. Gabriel’s long time friend Billy Keane will be MC on the night.

SAN RITA WELLNESS
Welcome to San Rita Wellness weekly column…We hope you are safe and well
Today we are talking about soups. Soup is great this time of year, as it’s hot, filling and bis cuits don’t go well with it. I am sure you will agree that there is nothing nicer than wrapping your hands around a hot mug of soup. You can either make a meal of it at lunchtime, have it between lunch and dinner to fill the gap or have it as a starter before dinner. Either way soup is a winner all round.
Nothing tastes as nice as your own homemade soup or for conveni ence you can buy it ready made. There is no big secret to making soup or you don’t have to be Jamie Oliver, as anything and everything can go into it and it’s a great way to use up your veg also.
ADD INS - Potato or pasta are great to bulk it up. You can also add in shredded leftover cooked chicken for more flavour. To make your soup creamy try adding in some 0% fat natural Greek yogurt.
STAPLES - It is always a good idea to keep your press stocked with stock cubes, tinned tomatoes and beans, herbs and seasonings like garlic and ginger.
GADGETS - Soup makers are ideal as they do all the work for you and your soup is ready to pour from it once ready. These are widely available at the moment in the shops. A flask is another handy gadget as you can bring it with you in the car or to work. And last but not least, we eat with our eyes so serve your soup in a nice attractive colourful bowl.
Let’s go through the word S O U P and see how soups can help us.
S - Soup can be homemade or ready made.
S - Shopping, buy in fresh veg weekly or the soup mix in a bag.
S - Secret, no secret as anything goes.
S - Satisfying, low in calories, warm filling and healthy nutrition.
S - Scales will smile at the end of the week.
O - Opinion, we all have our own favourite types of soup.
O - Options, as a meal, inbetween or a starter.
O - Orange or green, yellow or cream .
O - Optimistic, soup can prevent a bad day leading to a bad week.
O - Opportunity to help yourself to feel satisfied and on track.
U - Utilise all your veg.
U - Understand your trigger time and use soup as an alternative.
U - U -Turn, having a mug of hot soup can turn your day around.
U - Underestimate, all check the calories as soups can vary.

THE SHIPS BENEATH THE ICE
By Mensun Bound
THE DISCOVERY OF SHACKLETON’S ENDURANCE
On 21 November 1915, Sir Ernest Shackleton’s ship, Endurance, finally succumbed to the crushing ice. Its crew watched in silence as the stern rose twenty feet in the air and then, it was gone. The miracu lous escape and survival of all twenty-eight men on board have entered legend. And yet, the iconic ship that bore them to the brink of the Antarctic was con sidered forever lost.
A century later, an audacious plan to locate the ship was hatched. The Ship Beneath the Ice gives a blow-by-blow account of the two epic ex peditions to find the Endurance. As with Shackleton’s own story, the voy ages were filled with intense drama and teamwork under pressure. In March 2022, the Endurance was finally found to headlines all over the world.
Written by Mensun Bound, the Director of Exploration on both expedi tions, this captivating narrative includes countless fascinating stories of Shackleton and his legendary ship. Complete with a selection of Frank Hurley’s photos from Shackleton’s original voyage in 1914–17, as well as from the expeditions in 2019 and 2022, The Ship Beneath the Ice is the perfect tribute to this monumental discovery.

MONTH OF THE HOLY SOULS
November, the Month of the Holy Souls
The Catholic Church sets aside November, which begins with All Saints Day and All Souls Day, as the Month of the Holy Souls. During the month of November, we are encour aged to pray for those who have gone before us, family and friends. However, it does not end there for we are asked also to pray for those who may have no one to pray for them. In this way, we are joined to others in the Christian family and reminded that we are a wide community united in our belief in Jesus and his Resurrection. Those in purgatory cannot pray for themselves but one day they may be able to pray for us when we are in the same position. Perhaps this is why Pope St John XXIII wrote the following words “The devotion to the memory of the dead is one of the most beautiful expressions of the Catholic spirit.” Also visiting cemeteries is a significant way we can devote ourselves to the Holy Souls this Novem ber. Beginning with our own deceased family members and friends, visiting their graves is an opportunity for reflection and meditation. Personal offerings, such as candles and flow ers, or just keeping the family plot clean and tidy also gives us an opportunity in keeping our graves in check so why not make a visit even once a week during the coming month.
BEREAVEMENT
Once again it’s been a very sad week in the Community and unfortunately it was with great sadness, and complete shock that we learned of the shocking news on Saturday morning last October 29th of the sudden and unexpected passing of Kathleen Dee (Née O’ Sullivan) R.I.P. of Ballyline East and late of Trien, Kilmorna. Kathleen was one of nature’s finest ladies, a woman of most wonderful knowledge and a person who had a great interest in the welfare of family, neighbours and also the people in her own community and in the community of Kilmorna where she was born and reared. Her sister Eileen and brother Donie and their families still reside in the fam ily homestead. Kathleen was a woman who was extremely proud of her family, a caring and loving mother to her won derful children of son John, daughters Sheilanne, Catriona and Ann Marie whose achievements in life brought her great pride and joy, and of course the arrival of her grandchildren Nancy and Sally gave her the joy and pride of seeing the
younger generation of the family coming along. The loss of her husband John R.I.P. nearly three years ago created a huge void in the hard working family who are a highly respected and much admired part of the farming community here in Ballylongford. John and his late wife Kathleen worked extremely hard in making a success of their farm and build ing it up to a now model farm in which the family proudly continue. Kathleen was a woman who loved to converse with any age group and she could quite easily talk about either past or present issues and was very knowledgeable to all who had the pleasure of being in her company at any given time. Sadly she will be hugely missed and forever remembered by her loving family of son John, daughters Sheilanne, Catriona and Ann Marie, son-in-law Jerome. granddaughters Nancy and Sally loving sister Eileen and brother Donie O’Sullivan (Trien, Kilmorna), and her beloved sister-in-law Bridget Mar ron (Chicago), Ann Schmid (Indiana), Nora Tracy (Tuam) and Margaret O’Sullivan, nephews, family relatives and wide cir cle of friends and neighbours to whom we offer our deepest sympathies at this sad time. May her gentle soul Rest in peace in God’s Heavenly Kingdom where she will be once again reunited with her beloved John. Kathleen’s remains were removed from Lynch’s Funeral Home, Main Street, on Sunday evening (Oct.30th) last to St Michael the Archangel Church, Ballylongford. Requiem Mass for Kathleen took place on Bank holiday Monday last at 11.30am followed by interment at Re lig Mhichil Cemetery, Old School Road, Ballylongford.

TIDY TOWNS 2022
The good news story of the week was Tarbert’s performance in the 2022 Tidy Towns Competition. Adjudication took place on 28 June last and Tarbert was awarded 331 Marks out of a maximum of 550, representing 60% and an increase of 6 marks on the 2021 result.19 Centres in Kerry competed in population category B and Tarbert came second to Sneem, overall winner in this category. Tarbert increased by 1 mark in each of 6 cate gories out of 8 and did not lose marks in any of the 8 categories.
All was not positive in the report as it noted under Tidiness and Litter control- ‘....Unfortunately a considerable amount of weed growth was noted along footpaths leading into the vil lage and indeed within the village itself and housing estates. Weeds take away from an area and need to be removed. ‘The full report can be read on the Tidy Towns website. Thanks to everybody, young and old, who helped achieve this 2022 result and while no medals were awarded it is nice to hear compli mentary remarks by visitors and reflects well on the commu nity. We should remember that Tidy Towns is much more than competing in a competition over a couple of months and not just the responsibility of the Tarbert Development Association it is up to all of us who are fortunate to live in a very lovely place to keep it that way always for resident and visitor alike.

BEALE GAA
All roads lead to Duagh on Sunday! Beale seniors will be looking to redress the balance from last year as we face Brosna on Sunday in the North Kerry Senior Championship quarter final. Our campaign in 2021 was short-lived as Brosna were the authors of our downfall in the quarter final.
Eventhough missing many of our regular starting team due to injury, we were well in contention at half time in that game. We had put the first point on the board, and, despite missing scoring chances, we went in at the interval just four points adrift, 1-2 to 1-6.
However, Brosna turned the game, and the writing was on the wall for us at the second water break. Things didn’t get much better thereafter, and we couldn’t stem the tide as a third goal sealed victory for Brosna. We yielded to a stronger team by 1-6 to 3-14. We will be hoping to balance the books on Sunday in Duagh. Throw in is at 2.30.
Our juniors play the winners of Desmonds B/St Senans B in North Kerry Inter mediate Cup semi-final. We await details.
There was no jackpot winner in this week’s Beale Lotto. There were 2 Match-3 winners, Brendan Brennan and Con Carmody (Jnr), who each won €50. Num bers drawn were and 6, 9, 15 and 23. Next week’s jackpot is €2,000. The draw takes place on Sunday night in The Exchange Bar at 9 o’clock. A huge ‘míle buíochas’ to everyone who supports and promotes the Beale Lotto.
Tickets, €2 each or 3 for a fiver, are available in Joyce’s Newsagents or in the local pubs. Play online by downloading the Clubforce app or simply click the link on our Facebook, Twitter or Instagram pages or log onto https://clubforce. com/clubs/beale-gaa-kerry/.

This number of games have never been played in a year in North Kerry never mind that they were completed in a short time frame. A great achievement by all.
Congratulations to Jason Foley recieving a PWc All Star award on Friday night last.
KERRY PITCH & PUTT NEWS
The competitive season came to an end last Sunday with the staging of the County Adult Matchplay Championships in Tralee. Thankfully the course held up despite the horrendous conditions the night before as the sun shone for the latter stages on the day.
In the Senior Mens grade Deerpark’s Damien Fleming made it three-in-a-row with a 1up victory on the last hole over Jason Cregan from the host club as Cregan nearly got a hole in one on the last to bring it to sudden death.
However Damien sank a difficult 10ft uphill putt to hold on for the win as it was his second consecutive double at county level following his County Senior Strokeplay win back in May. Damien had defeated Tralee’s Jason O’Regan in the semi-finals while Jason defeated Listowel’s Jake Shine in his semi-final.
Up in Limerick meanwhile Killarney native Dermot Tuohy caused a stir in win ning the Limerick Senior Mens event last Sunday also.
The Kerry Intermediate semi-finals saw Listowel’s Bobby McCarron defeat Tralee’s Danny O’Leary while Deerpark’s Adam Kelly got the better of Newmar ket’s Willie John Buckley.
In the final Bobby came from behind at the halfway stage to defeat Adam 3&2. The win ultimately prevented a clean sweep of the Mens titles for Deerpark as Daniel Kelly from the Killarney club won the Junior decider also by 3&2 against Newmarket’s Ben Murphy. Daniel had beaten Listowel’s John O’Connor in his semi-final while Ben was victorious over another Listowel player in Dylan Sweeney.
The Ladies event was an all Tralee affair as Rosemarie O’Sullivan won at the first playoff hole against club-mate Catriona O’Connor. Bernadette O’Regan and Majella Moynihan were the beaten semi-finalists as we would like to ac knowledge the work of our Competition Secretary Christy O’Mahony not just last Sunday but all throughout the year.
Last Sunday’s event was played in the shadow of the death of Deerpark players David, Mark and Robbie Harnett uncle Padraig’s death as we would like to offer our sincerest condolences to the Harnett family on his sad death.
2022 was a year Kerry Pitch & Putt will remember not just for the National and Munster U16 Inter-County double but also the National Intermediate Mens Strokeplay win for Listowel’s Killian O’Gorman, the National U16 Plate Match play win for Deerpark’s Nathan Cronin and the National U16 Boys Strokeplay success for Listowel’s A Jay Barrett.
We also had Munster wins for Tralee’s Lucy Grattan in the Munster Girls Match play against club-mate Ella Moynihan. There was also an all Listowel final be tween brothers Trevin and Jayden Chute in the Boys Championship final which Trevin won and an all Listowel Boys Plate final in the same event where A Jay Barrett defeated Dara Browne.
Thanks to the local media in all its forms for their coverage of our sport this year.

OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL
Oh, most beauti ful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven.
Blessed Mother of the Son of God; Im maculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succour me in my necessity (Mention your request here)
There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times). Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3 times). Amen
This prayer is never known to fail. It is to be said for 3 consecutive days. Publication on granting of the favour must be promised and done. K.K.
THE MIRACLE PRAYER
Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked many favours.
This time I ask you this special one, (mention fa vour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your own favour not mine. Amen.
Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never been known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. M.D.

MEANING OF LIFE
Sure It’s only a bit of craic. The children love dressing up. Sure there’s no harm in it.”
We had just passed a group of children all rigged out in Halloween costumes. Some faces were painted deathly white, with blood oozing from the forehead. One was decapitated, carrying his blood dripping head under his arm. The entire scene was macabre with skeleton costumes, devil horns, malformed bodies, mummies and monstrous corpselike creatures. No doubt hours of preparation goes into the makeup and cos tumes in homes and schools all over the world.
Not withstanding the fun and excitement this might generate in little minds it does not detract from the fact that this is a celebration of the ugli ness of death, darkness and evil. Maybe l am just a boring, aging woman but Hal loween is not for me.
The reality is that Halloween is a billion dollar industry.
But apart from that it’s dipping into the dark side of things and shows little reverence or respect for the tragedy of death.
The Word of God encourages us to “abstain from every form of evil.” 1 Thessalonians 5:22.
Ephesians 5:11 puts it like this “Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness.....” and continues by telling us to “ Look carefully then how you walk not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time because the days are evil.”
In the Epistle of Saint John we read This is the message we have heard from him and pro claim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all. if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.
Have l lost my sense of humour? I don’t think it’s funny celebrating things that are morose, ugly, disgusting, and gruesome. There’s enough real pain and suffering in the world. This is just my own personal opinion expressed here.

St. Martha, I resort to thee and to thy petition and faith. I offer up to thee this light which I shall burn every Tuesday for nine Tuesdays.
Comfort me in all my difficulties through the great favour thou didst enjoy when Our Saviour lodged in thy house. I beseech thee to have definite pity in regard to the favour I ask (Mention favour).
Intercede for my family that we may always be provided for in all our necessities.
I ask thee St. Martha to overcome the dragon which thou didst cast at thy feet.
Say one Our Father and three Hail Marys with a lighted candle every Tuesday and the above prayer made known with the intentions of spreading de votion to St. Martha.
This miraculous Saint grants every thing before the Tuesdays are ended. No matter how difficult. A.T.

To you I have recourse from the depot of my heart, and humbly beg great power to come to my as sistance.
Help me in my present and most urgent petition. (Make Your Request).
In return I promise to make your name known and cause your name to be invoked.
St. Jude, pray for us and all who invoked thy aid. Amen.
