AWARD WINNING DAIRYMASTER EXCELS IN FUTURE PROOFING THEIR WORKFORCE
Dairymaster are entering the festive period on a high this year, yesterday (Thursday 8th December) they were announced “Outstanding Employer of Diversity in the workplace” in the large company category at the Generation Apprenticeship Employer of the Year awards ceremony held in the Morrison Hotel, Dublin. Simon Harris, Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science addressed the audience stating “we need to highlight good practice and leadership being shown by business in apprenticeships” as he presented the awards.
Over the past number of years, Dairymaster demonstrated a real commitment to the future growth of the company by acknowledging apprenticeships as a vital role in developing their skill and employee base.
John Harty, CEO Dairymaster comments “We are absolutely thrilled to have won this award. There are approximately 9,000 companies in Ireland who are registered as an employer of apprentices, so to come out on top among big players is a huge achievement for us. We’ve placed a strong emphasis on the range of apprenticeships being offered and to get recognised for the work is brilliant. I would like to thank the apprentices for their commitment, the mentors for their coaching, guidance, and experience and to the training organisations for the support in making these courses possible.”
Dairymaster have apprentices registered across 7 fields of learning namely, Cybersecurity, Sales, Original Equipment Manufacturing (OEM), Electrical, Toolmaking, Refrigeration & Air Conditioning and Mechanical Automotive Maintenance Fitter (MAMF).
“By registering apprentices on these programmes, we know they will develop the required knowledge, skills and competencies to work effectively and autonomously in Dairymaster” states Breda Flaherty, Organisational Development Manager, Dairymaster.
Dairymaster have the facility to offer a choice of apprenticeships to new recruits. They can avail of the opportunity to work in several disciplines to see where their preference is, meaning they can choose an apprenticeship to suit their needs. They also offer this opportunity to current employees who might want to try something new.
Dairymaster certainly seems to be the ideal training ground for new apprentices looking to earn while they learn as they explore new careers opportunities.

DEBATE SUCCESS FOR PRESENTATION SECONDARY LISTOWEL
The past week saw a return to success for the Pres Listowel Debate Team as they progress to the next stage of the UCC Schools’ Debate League.
Presentation Listowel fought off tough competition from schools around Munster to win a spot in the coveted next round of the UCC Schools’ Debate League on Friday the 9th in UCC. Katie Trant and Noelle Dillion valiantly fought to propose the motion “The voting age must be lowed to sixteen” and succeeded in qualifying for the next round.
The girls engaged in thought-provoking discussions and impressed the judges with their ability to refute the opposition. They, alongside their peers, worked as a team and their success attest to the group effort of those who take part in debating in Pres Listowel.

CAROLINE’S DÓTERRA ESSENTIAL OILS
CAROLINE’S POD OF POSITIVITY
Welcome to my weekly column and my Pod of Positivity. It is here you will find little tips, tools and information that help us to maintain a life of health, wellness, love, and gratitude while using DóTerra’s essential oils in our daily routine.
As a certified DóTerra essential oil specialist I have been delighted to help and support so many people and their families over the last three years on their essential oil journey throughout North Kerry, West Limerick and beyond. I know how these oils can support the Body, the Mind and the Mood.
Christmas Blues
Christmas time can be a magical time for many of us, but the festive period can also be a time of stress and anxiety. For those who have recently lost a loved one, Christmas can intensify feelings of grief and sadness. This week I want to share some of dóTerras essential oils that I hope will benefit you in these difficult times and sharing my tips on how to use them.
Lavender helps ease feelings of anxiousness and can be particularly calming during times of stress. It evokes feelings of self-awareness and relaxation. Take one to two drops of dóTerras Lavender in a glass of water to help reduce anxious feelings. Mix 10 x drops of Lavender with carrier oil in a roller bottle and apply on to your wrist points and the back of the ears.
Balance is another favourite of mine. To begin your day my tip would be to put a drop of Balance on the bottom of your feet to promote feelings of calmness and tranquillity. Balance is an excellent way to help balance the stress and overwhelm of motherhood and can help you maintain calm and clarity in your days over the busy festive period.
Console is an oil loved by many of my Pod Members as it’s an oil mostly used for emotional healing. Losing something or someone you love can be deeply disorienting and painful. Words unspoken and questions unanswered may keep you worried and unsettled. This beautiful oil from dóTerra is a Comforting Blend and will accompany you as you close the door on sadness and take your first steps on a hopeful path toward emotional healing.
Deep Blue is a powerful essential oil blend that offers immediate soothing effects for skin. It’s popularly used after activity as part of an after-sports massage. My tip is to apply Deep Blue on your feet and knees before and after exercise. Massage into your back for relief of exhausted and overworked muscles, such as working outside or moving boxes. Use on your feet before and after big events, such as weddings, to ease foot discomfort from standing. Apply to growing children’s legs for a cooling and soothing effect. While Deep Blue is soothing for the body’s muscles it is used by many of my Pod Members in times of grief and can be applied over the heart chakra when mixed with a carrier oil.
All of the above DóTerra essential oils can be purchased from Caroline’s Pod of Positivity along with Bespoke Kits and Introductory Kits. These oils are a natural solution to care for our needs and our family’s health needs and they can support us with many of the following that we can experience from time to time, such as: Anxiety Issues, Digestive Support, Sleep Assist, Muscle Care, Stress Buster, Depression, Grief, Energy Boost, Skin Support, Immunity, Allergy Assist and so much more.
My Three Way Method In Using DóTerra’s Essential Oils:
Topically: Apply the oils onto your skin particularly on the pulse points and soles of the feet. Aromatically: Place two to three drops into a cold-water diffuser and diffuse the oils in your home, classroom, office space, salons or other places of work and business. Internally: Add the oils to your favourite food, waters and drinks, or simply by taking one drop daily under the tongue to support your body and mind.
For extra positivity and well-being, check out my Facebook page: Caroline’s Pod of Positivity where we have information and videos on all of DóTerra’s essential oils.
Consultations and Oil Experience Appoint ments will resume again in the New Year.
Wishing You & Your Family a Happy & Peaceful Christmas

VOLATILITY
CHANGE, BUT OPPORTUNITY, TOO
BRINGS
By Donal Broderick, FDC Financial Services Ltd.
We usually associate volatility with large degree of change and fluctuations, and certainly as we approach the latter months of 2022, we can relate to this under so many aspects.
We have seen unimaginable price fluctuations on so many of our day-to-day consumables, and as we approach the winter months this is certainly having an impact on disposable income, causing everyone to pay more attention to basic spending.
This is no different for the farming sector, where we have seen record cost hikes for basic inputs.
The reasons for such price inflation have well been documented at this point, with a plethora of reasons identified, so hands-on management is required to maintain a viable business and work our way through the volatility.
Financial markets are no different. Again, interest rates, soaring inflation, legacy of pandemic supply issues, recessionary risks in many parts of the globe, war in Ukraine, energy shortage amongst many others are all contributing factors to such fluctuations. Careful planning is key for everyone when working our way through such periods.
This however requires some understanding of the longer-term plan and having enough reserves to meet the emergency needs that can crop up due to unforeseen circumstances. The Standard and Poor’s 500, or simply the S & P 500, is a stock market index tracking the stock performance of the 500 large companies on the stock exchanges in the United States. It is one of the most followed equity indices. This too has seen huge fluctuations in 2022, equating to a -20.83% return in 2022 at the point of writing. Many are exposed to the index despite not being directly invested in same. It has always been a benchmark for monitoring performance over many decades, in fact with historical annual performance dating back to 1926.
The performance of 2022 to date, has occurred many times over the 96 years of recorded performance.
It is important to take longer term approaches despite the shorter-term volatility, to remain committed to the longer term plan. This can seem easier said than done, hence why I referenced earlier having enough reserves to meet the unexpected costs and emergency needs without upsetting the longer-term intention. However, there is always a silver lining, and this time is no different where regular investing can mean real opportunity in volatility.
For example, the Wall St Crash (1929), Great Depression (1937), World War II (1940), Tech bubble followed by 9/11 (2001), and financial crisis (2008) had a common denominator in significant volatility and market correction. However, as much as the correction that occurred in each and every one of these periods, it was followed by a significant rally in the markets shortly after, and it was more important to remain vested over this period in particular. In fact, taking the overall data available from 1926 to 2021 inclusive, it has returned in excess of 12% per annum on average over this significant period.
The key difference in these times, is that it is so easy to get access to such funds for minimal amounts of €100 per month and this is where the real opportunity of unit cost averaging is benefiting many by averaging in throughout volatility.
Given the current rate of inflation, nil deposit rate environment, spiralling property inflation with real shortage of supply, consumers must explore all options to try to retain current purchasing power and manage volatility. Thankfully we see on a daily basis, much more diversification both on and off the farm, decisions to manage this volatility and learn from historical trends and market cycles. It is imperative to reach out to get assistance with this planning and work our way through such periods.

No One Can Get a House, and What We Can Do About It
By Rory Hearne
The book that has been waiting to be written—how Ireland’s housing policy has locked an entire generation out of the housing market and what we should do about it.....
Millennials are the first generation in Ireland to be worse off than their parents. Trapped in a game of rental roulette, stuck living at home as adults, and many on the brink of homelessness, the Irish housing crisis has defined the lives of an entire generation—and it is set to continue.
With housing costs in Ireland the highest in the EU, the property ladder has been kicked from under thousands. So how did we get here…and how do we break the cycle?
In Gaffs, housing expert Rory Hearne urges us to think about the people behind the statistics, and shows us that there is a way towards a future where everyone has access to a home.

TABLE QUIZ
After a break of almost three years, the Kilflynn Cancer Support Group table quiz returns on Wednesday 28th December. The intervening period has been difficult for our designated charities, Recovery Haven, Kerry Hospice and Kerry Cancer Support, with much of their fundraising activity curtailed because of the pandemic. Therefore, the community’s support is needed more than ever so that these beneficiaries can continue their wonderful work. The quiz has always received unbelievable support from the people of Kilflynn and the surrounding parishes, with almost €80000 raised to date, the vast majority of which was distributed to Kerry-based cancer charities. With such support, the quiz has become an integral part of Christmas celebrations in the village. Moreover, the event is not all about answering questions but also a fun filled night of music, raffles, and auctions. Therefore, the organizers would be grateful to receive any donations. Maybe you could ask a business, you regularly deal with, for some item, such as a voucher, that we might raffle or sell on the night. Also, if you have any unwanted presents do not put them in the attic; give them to us to raise much-needed funds for our charities. Even if you cannot attend on the night we would begrateful for your support in these ways. If interested please contact John Flaherty on (087) 2352753. Any donations can be handed in to John, Parker’s Pub or Herbert’s Bar and shop. Anyone who might like to lend a hand on the night itself please let us know. As always, the organisers thank you for your continued support and look forward to seeing you on the 28th December, throw-in at 8 30!

‘The Big House in Kerry, a Social History’ edited by Jane O’Hea O’Keeffe was launched recently. This large tome features 12 of Kerry’s leading historians who have written extensively about the Big Houses which dominated the Kerry landscape over the centuries. Dr Declan Downey has written about Tarbert House and three centuries of continuity by the Leslie family from 1700 to the present day. Ursula Leslie, the present Seigneurine of Tarbert was present at the launch, now in her 90’s and to quote Declan ‘continues to be actively involved in the local community’s cultural, developmental and social life’. GARDA CENTENARY
A very proud man at the recent Centenary 1922-2022 commemoration of An Garda Siochána in Kerry was Denis Kiely, Main Street. He received a Centenary Medal in respect of his late father, Garda Dan Kiely. Active with Sean Moylan in North Cork during the War of Independence, Dan Kiely returned from the United States and with his brother Paddy joined An Garda Siochána in 1933. He served 24 years in Tarbert from 1940 up until his retirement in 1964. He was unique in that he lived out his total retirement in Tarbert up until his death in 1985 where he and his wife Tess reared a family of fourteen children.

SANTA AT 94
December 8, the Church Holyday, was traditionally the start of the Christmas season, but more importantly for us as school children in the 1950’s it was the day that Santa Claus made his appearance in Coolahan’s big window. True to tradition there he was in Coolahan’s window last Thursday 8 December, showing his years, white beard a little longer but still nodding his head, saying to those who choose to stop and look ‘I’m still here, all you have to do is believe’. In 1928, the late Mickie and Nora Coolahan, who had both served their time in the drapery trade decided to open their own drapery shop on Tarbert’s Main Street. As an added novelty they brought Santa Claus from London. On the 7 December the windows were shuttered off out of view to the public. The following day the big shutters were taken down and there he stood in the centre of the big window, nodding his head surrounded by a vast collection of toys and presents. As youngsters we would gather at the shop window after school, pushing and shoving to get a better view. We gazed in awe at cowboy suits, guns and holsters, games of ludo, snakes and ladders, draughts, jigsaw sets, train sets, dolls, cookery sets, Beano, Dandy, Hotspur and Bunty Annuals for the girls. Now we had an idea what to ask Santa for when we wrote to him at the North Pole. At midnight each Christmas Eve, Santa left the big window just as we left our childhood and boyhood dreams to make way for future gatherings of boys and girls.
Thanks, Mary and grand-daughter Caoimhe for keeping the memory and the tradition alive.

Novice Cup Final Report by John Walsh
Clounmacon 0.12 v Knockanure 1.09 A.E.T
A wise man once said, “there’s no such thing as bad weather, only the wrong clothes”. Well one certainly required plenty clothing in O’Rahilly Park, Ballylongford on Saturday afternoon as Clounmacon & Knockanure played against one another & the severe weather elements in the final of the Novice Cup for 2022. A slight delay to proceedings wasn’t very helpful but the fair sized crowd cheered loudly for their respective sides as Gerdy O’Carroll let them off. Clounmacon won the throw in & it was midfielder Darragh Keane, under a lot of pressure got his kick in to score a great first point. A free one minute later from 30 metres was converted by full forward Brian Greaney. Clounmacon went three ahead on the 6th minute as Foran found Lyons in space & he obliged from the right hand corner. Knockanure scored from play next to open their account but there was then a period of “toing & froing” with some half chances from both sides that didn’t yields a score. Chris Lyons had a great chance of a goal on the 15 minute mark but for Fitzmaurice in the Knockanure goals to spring a brilliant save. Kieran Ahern kicked the first of his two points soon after, only for Johnny Toomey to reply with the outside of his boot, if you don’t mind! There were then a few schmozzles and with things getting a little heated even in the cold, the man in black produced a few yellow coloured cards, which was indeed no harm at all. On the 27th minute, a bullet like shot from the Knockanure corner forward danger man, Colin Enright produced a superb save from Brian Carty. 2 minutes later Darragh Keane’s pass to Greaney gave him a bit to do, but he kicked a great point putting three between them once again. Colin Enright responded almost immediately & a converted free from the blues on the stroke of the half hour left the tie delicately poised, 5 to 4 in favour of Clounmacon.
Some jogging on the spot from the spectators kept the toes a bit warm during the interval and the general consensus was this was a game that could go either way.
On the resumption, Knockanure started brightly with Ahern flaking over his second to level matters. 5 minutes later it was that danger man again Enright who floated over & Knockanure now led for the first time in the game. Greaney was fouled 1 minute later but he rose & kicked over the equalizer for his side. Knockanure however at this stage seemed to be in the ascendancy but weren’t converting their dominance into scores. A long period ensued with no score to relate however it was nip & tuck all the same. With 10 minutes to go, the Clounmacon rearguard were caught somewhat & Kieran Swan was left in with the goals at his mercy. His low shot to the corner was well dispatched leaving Carty with little chance of saving. Knockanure 1-06. Clounmacon 0-6. Clounmacon looked dead & buried now as a goal would surely be needed to catch up. Not so! Greaney kicked a free to reduce the deficit, but Aidan Keane from a tight angle replied one minute later. The wily Fintan McEnery who had just come on weaved his way through a congested defense & kicked a fine score. On the 30th minute, another veteran, Chris Lyons shot from long range & it sailed over. We were now in injury time and it was a one point game. The Black & Amber attacked once more & Lyons was fouled on the 20m line. Brian Greaney popped over the equalizer & thus forced the extra time.
As the dusk was beginning to show & the temperature dropped another degree, extra time commenced. Jake Kelly had a goal chance almost immediately but yet again Diarmuid Fitzmaurice made a great save to deny Clounmacon. Enright at the other end once more kicked a point but Greaney responded splendidly to level yet again. As the half was approaching the end, Chris Lyons gathered a pass on the scoreboard side & kicked a monster score to lift his side once more. The ball travelled down field straight from the kick out & the ever reliable Colin Enright brought the blues back on level terms once more.
The second period of extra time was tension filled both on & off the field but with bodies tiring neither side scored in these ten minutes. It finished as the light was fading but both sides must go at it once again, most probably next weekend. It was an enthralling affair, with both sides giving their all. As already mentioned the weather conditions were horrid but great credit must go to both teams for their commitment & indeed the entertainment they provided on such a day. The spectators from both camps were in general agreement that a draw was a fair result. Both sides will feel that there is improvements to be made & so it’s all to play for in the replay. Final score from Ballylongford: Clounmacon 0-12. Knockanure 1-09
