School children around the country are getting ready to get ‘their brains in gear’ as the Credit Union Schools Quiz returns.

Listowel Credit Union Ltd. are delighted to advise that the Credit Union Schools Quiz will return in its traditional form in 2023. Stage 1 of the 2023 Credit Union Schools Quiz will take place in the coming weeks and entry forms have been issued to local National Schools.

PIGOTT POETRY PRIZE ANNOUNCES

2023 COMPETITION

The Annual Pigott Poetry Prize, presented at Listowel Writers’ Week, is in its 10th year and is awarded for the best book of new poetry by an Irish poet published between 1st February 2022 and 1st February 2023. The winner will receive the country’s largest poetry prize of €12,000 and the two shortlisted finalists each receive €1,000. The closing date for receipt of collections is Monday the 6th of February 2023.

The Prize is sponsored by Mark Pigott KBE who shared, “It is a blessing to be able to support this wonderful literary award and recognise the leading poets of Ireland and showcase the beauty, diversity and strength of Irish Poetry.” This year’s adjudicators are Irish Poets Martin Dyar & Clodagh Beresford Dunne. A shortlist of three poetry books will be revealed in April 2023 and the winner will be announced at the Opening Ceremony of Listowel Writers’ Week on the 31st of May 2023. Festival Chairperson, Catherine Moylan commented, “Writers’ Week are delighted to continue our celebration of Irish Poetry with the Pigott Poetry Prize. We are very grateful to Mark Pigott and his family for this award. Thanks to their support, we are proud to promote Irish poets nationally & internationally.”

Listowel Writers’ Week takes place from the 31st of May to the 4th of June 2023.

Winter Skin Body Scrub

January may not be the most inspiring of months but it’s the perfect month to recharge and indulge in a little self care. This week I’m sharing one of my popular DIY winter skin body scrubs that will gently exfoliate and polish the skin, leave you with a healthy looking natural glow and make you feel fabulous.

Ingredients:

½ cup granulated sugar

½ cup brown sugar

2 tbsp DóTerra’s Fractionated Coconut Oil

4 drops of DóTerra’s Madagascar Vanilla

2 drops of DóTerra’s Grapefruit

2 drops of DóTerrra’s Wild Orange

Mix all the ingredients together and store in a glass jar with a lid.

Directions for use:

Apply generously to damp body and massage gently on to the feet, elbows, and any other area in need of exfoliation. Rinse thoroughly.

SUCCESS FOR PRESENTATION LISTOWEL AT THIS YEAR’S BT YOUNG SCIENTIST EXHIBITION

Students from Presentation Secondary Listowel broke exciting new ground with their projects at the RDS BT Young Scientist Exhibition last week. From enabling better learning to helping the visually impaired to creating a green heating solution for every home, the students received great praise and interest in their research and presentations.

Out of over 1700 applicants, Pres Listowel is delighted that three groups from the Transition Year class made the shortlisted projects for the RDS exhibition which took place from Wednesday to Saturday last week.

Students Katie Trant, Eimear Buckley and Noelle Dillon qualified for the RDS with their project titled BATS which aims to break down barriers in the sporting world, particularly in swimming, for visually impaired athletes. The students designed high-tech goggles with the aim of providing independence in the swimming pool for the visually impaired when they are training and competing. The goggles are set up to alert the blind swimmer when they are approaching the side of the swimming pool via a beep or vibration warning alarm. The girls were delighted to receive a “Highly Commended” award from the BT judges.

Students Natalie Gorczyk and Saoirse Kelly, who presented their psychological investigation which delves into the retention of knowledge in 12 to 16-year-olds while taking a closer look at the effect colour has on knowledge retention.

Finally, taking a fascinating closer look at a natural and sustainable alternative to fibreglass insulation were TY students Meabh Kennelly, Saoirse Whyte and Trina Kennedy. The girls came up with their idea after they noticed that green algae dries to form a cotton textile texture just like fibre glass insulation. With this in mind, they felt that the use of algae as sustainable source of insulation could prove to be a real game changer when it comes to the environment.

Principal Katherina Broderick congratulated the students for their impressive and innovative projects which rightly deserved a place at the BT Young Scientist. “these students put a tremendous amount of work into their projects. Their research and presentations were exceptional. Overall, it was a wonderful experience for the students. Great credit is due to them and to the teachers who supported their Young Scientist journey and who encourage all our student’s interest in STEM in Presentation Listowel’

Brendan Boyle Cup: The 2022 final of the Brendan Boyle Cup (sponsored by Moloney and McCarthy Accountants) took place in Páirc na nGael, Brosna on Sunday on a pitch that was perfect despite the atrocious weather conditions in the past week. Ballyduff started brightly and led by four points to two after twenty minutes and were awarded a penalty which was saved by Brosna keeper Steve McAuliffe. Brosna rallied and were level at halftime at six points all. Ballyduff outscored their opponents by five points to two in the second half and ran out winners by three points 0 – 11 to 0 – 8. SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

In line with our goals for 2023 to 2025 we are now planning to strengthen our board with governance, management and internal coordination.

Bud’s is recruiting additional committees members with any one of the following skills:

Accountancy and Finance, Marketing and PR, Human resources, IT & SOCIAL MEDIA, Legal, Community Development, Youth & Community, Family Support Work, Childcare, Staff and Supervision, Old Age, Alone, Fundraising and Social Enterprise

New board members will also be expected to chair or participate in a subcommittee of the board. Previous board experience is desirable but not essential. Candidates with local knowledge and experience of working in the voluntary sector are preferred.

INFORMATION

The Board meets 11 times per year. Some of these meetings are virtual, the others are held in Bud’s Centre Ballyduff maximum time 2 hours once a month.

Bud’s will provide all board members with induction training and ongoing board development. The term of office is three years with an option to be reappointed for a second and third term. This is a trustee role and Bud’s is a charity, in compliance with Regulatory requirements this role is not remunerated

This is a wonderful opportunity to experience learning about Community Work, Community Development, Family Support, Social Care, and Childcare. The running and operations of working at grass root level from the bottom up. Sharing your skills and talents in your professional capacity and giving a person a sense of belonging, sharing and giving back to the community. DEATHS

The death took place of Mary B O’Dowd (née Enright), Caherslee, Tralee and late of Clahane, Ballyduff. Her remains reposed at Gleasures Funeral Home, Tralee. Her Requiem Mass was celebrated at Our Lady & St. Brendan’s Church, Tralee and burial was in Rath Cemetery.

The death took place of Bartholomew (Sonny) Dineen, Ahabeg Cross, Lixnaw. His remains reposed at Lawlor’s Funeral Home, Ballyduff. His Requiem Mass was celebrated at St. Michael’s Church, Lixnaw and burial was in Rahela Cemetery, Ballyduff. Sympathy is extended to the families, relatives and friends of the above deceased.

This Friday night is a big occasion for St Brendan’s AC as the awards night will be held in Kilmoyley Community Centre at 6.30pm. Awards will be presented to juveniles and adults for the year’s achievements.

A Hall of Fame Award will also be presented to a past member.

The 2023 Tom Kelly 8K was a big success on Sunday. St Brendan’s AC thanks everyone who contributed to the occasion, including the many sponsors, marshalls, athletes and volunteers. Results and photographs on the club Facebook and Instagram.

Bud’s Family Centre is recruiting new committee members for the Board of Trustee

Bud’s is seeking interested individuals who would like to give of their knowledge, skills and experience to support the work of the organisation in providing quality and progressive services to the Community in Ballyduff and surrounding areas

Our goals for 2023 to 2025 are: Strengthen our governance, management and internal coordination as a charity organisation

Training continues for juveniles on Wednesdays in the ARC from 6pm to 8pm for different age-groups with regular sessions in An Ríocht on Fridays. Adults are in action on Mondays and Wednesdays and the Couch to 5K will begin shortly with Cathy Flynn again leading the group. Details will be announced shortly.

Sympathy of the community is extended to Kitty Kelly, Main Street on the death of her sister-in-law Bernadette (Bernie) Collins, née Hurley of Drimoleague, County Cork. Bernadette died at her home on Sunday 8 January. Her Requiem Mass took place on Wednesday 11 January in All Saints Church, Drimoleague followed by interment in the adjoining cemetery. STREETSCAPE GRANT SCHEME

Application Forms for the Streetscape Enhancement Grant Scheme administered by Kerry County Council for Tarbert are available at Tarbert Post Office. The object of the Scheme is to encourage business owners and property owners to improve the streetscape of Tarbert village. Grants are available for eligible works under the scheme which must be approved by Kerry County Council in advance of works being carried out. KERRY MOBILE LIBRARY

The Mobile Library will be in the Square, Tarbert on Wednesday 25 January from 12.30pm to 1pm and fortnightly thereafter on Wednesdays. The service is free of charge and the friendly library staff offer a book request service and if your selected choice is not available they will endeavour to order your book. The mobile library will be in Ballylongford at Heaphy’s car park from 2pm to 2.30pm and wiil be in Asdee from 2.45pm to 3.30pm on the same day.

While Kerins O’Rahilly’s were not successful in the recent All Ireland Club semi-final against Kilmacud Crokes, Tarbert had a link to the winning Dublin side. Theo Clancy who played in the back line for Crokes and given the unenviable task of marking Tommy Walsh, is the son of Dympna Buckley, formerly of Main Street, Tarbert.

Last Saturday night, the committee hosted a Celebratory Evening in St. Senan’s Hall, for all the children who participated in the Community Games this past year. A great night was had by all, with music, treats and games for all the children. Always bestowing his love of rock (heavy rock) on both family and friends. Billy was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in October 2021 and whilst he faced this disease with tremendous courage and strength, he passed away on February 17, 2022. He spent a time in the Palliative Care Unit in UHK where the care, support and treatment were out of this world. He received the best care from the best team. His family will be forever grateful to this incredible team for what they did for Billy. This event is a fitting tribute to Billy and supports an amazing cause. Unfortunately many have been touched by this awful disease and this facility in Tralee, like so many more around the country, has offered patients superior patient care always. All proceeds from this rock night go towards the Palliative Care Unit, UHK. We appreciate your support!

LIOS TUATHAIL AC

Its only January but already we are at National competitions. The National Junior & U23 finals were held thankfully indoors as it was bitterly cold outside in the Dublin air and not suited to the fast action on the indoor track. January the 14th is very early in the season so expectations were not too high as the main body of work is yet to come but our Junior athletes are making a name for themselves on the national stage and this continued last weekend.

Individual national medals are like hens teeth, very hard to come by, so when a Club win two individual medals no matter the sport, you have achieved national level ability. Lios Tuathail AC are very proud of all our club athletes performances over the weekend with 6 national medals and some nice PBs for this time of year.

Individual medals was won by Padraic McCarthy, Silver in the WFD and Fifth in the Shot Putt, Padraic is now in third level but continues to work and develop into a strong athlete and very close to be up with the best in Ireland. Megan Lynch won Bronze in the 60m final. This is a race that is over in seconds, so any mistakes are punished severely. Without the indoor facilities its very difficult to prepare for the 60m, but Megan has worked dignity over the last few months to back up her outdoor performance from last year and this performance is a testament to her work rate.

Athletics is mainly an individual sport but relays brings the team environment in athletics. Lios Tuathail AC were the only team outside of Dublin to have a Female U23 4x200m team in the finals. This was already a success but we know we have a team that can complete on the national stage. Our team of Megan Lynch with a strong first leg handed off to Saoirse Dillion who is still U17 age group but showed great composure to slot into second at the critical break point then handed over to Rachel Neylon who after sickness is delighted to be back on the track maintained second before handing the baton to Rebecca Falvey, our experienced athlete, who confidently maintained second position and brought the team home to Silver. Well done to Megan, Saoirse, Rachel and Rebecca who maintains our good record in relays at National level.

Louis o Connell finished in the top 10 in the Junior 60m with a really strong run just missing out on the final. Louis is progressing very nicely and more races will bring him into a strong position for the remaining of the indoors. Louis also ran a PB in the 200m, so a great opening meet for Louis.

Mollie oRiordan still with 4 years as junior moved up to get experience at this level in the 800m. Mollie showed competitive spirit to stay with the older athletes and finished with a season best, much improved from her last run in Munster, so great progress from this promising young athlete.

Aoibheann Harte completed in the Junior WFD finished seventh overall, Aoibheann still U18 has many more years at this level and coming back from sickness will be happy to get the experience under belt for the coming year.

This final has been delayed due to the drastic weather conditions over the past month, but on Sunday last in Brosna under the watchful eye of Tadgh Murphy Duagh, in what was surprisingly good underfoot conditions the last of the 2022 Finals took place. It was Brosna midfielder Connor Lane on the scoreboard first with a point in the 3rd minute. But in quick reply Chris Whyte split the posts two minutes later. But Brosna’s late addition Dave Curtin was keeping the pressure on and adding to the scoreboard in the 6th minute, the game swayed from end to end with no let up from either side, an awarded free to Ballyudff’s Darragh Goulding was duly converted in the 7th minute to bring the sides even again with two a piece. But it was Aodhan Curley Ballyduff who got the score of the game from a awkward angle to swing it over the bar at the lower goals to a roar from the crowd in 8th minute, again it was Ballyduff on the attack when Darragh Goulding split the posts 30 seconds later to bring his side 2 points up, but the man of the half was Brosna’s number 1 Steve McAuliffe when he saved an awarded penalty in the 11th minute, the game took a lull and the ball went from end to end with missed chances on both sides.

It took until the 14th minute for an awarded free converted by Connor Lane, again it was Lame who split the posts in the 18th minute to bring the game to a deadlock once more, Brosna’s midfielder was on a roll and converted two awarded free’s before the half time whistle, but just as Brosna thought they were going in 2 points, Ballyduff’s Nathan McGrath converted a free in the 27th minute and Tommy O Connor split the post to bring the half time score to Ballyduff B 0.06 v Brosna B 0.06

It took until the 9th minute for the opening score of the half which came from the boot of Andrew Murphy Ballyduff, Ballyduff looked the better team moving the ball at pace but Brosna were dogged in defence and forced shoot selection errors under pressure. It took until the 15th minute for the deadlock to be broken with a converted free from Brosna’s Conor Lane, but unfortunately the fitness and speed of Ballyduff was to dominated for the reminder of the half with scores coming from Tommy O Connor, Johnny Regan and two converted free’s from Nathan McGrath with Brosna only managing a point deep into injury time from their number 1 Steve McAuliffe to bring the full time score to Ballyduff B 0.11 v Brosna B 0.08. LISTOWEL RFC U16S OFF TO A FLYER IN THEIR MUNSTER 2023 CAMPAIGN

COBH PIRATES 12 LISTOWEL 29

A superb victory achieved for Listowel away from home against a well renowned and well fancied Cobh Pirates squad. This was quite an extraordinary, full squad, performance. The erratic weather and gale force winds seemed to energise the well drilled Listowel team to throw off any underdog tag and send a strong message across Munster that they can be a force to be reckoned in the years biggest competition. Listowel welcomed some excellent contributions from all the squad with Jason Morriarty very strong at front row and Oisin Kelly growing in stature in his new wing position. Riogain Joy showed super speed and tackling on the opposite side, improving all the time, while Fionn McNamara showed some excellent tackling on right wing and Harry Reidy made 2 superb appearances in the back line showing great composure under pressure. Jake Rochford was strong and resolute at full back in very difficult conditions sharing the difficult task with a confident contribution from the free running Joseph Gilbert while Ryan Henderson added to the Listowel packs dominance in the scrum.

Exceptional performances across the squad were on display with all 21 players contributing throughout the game which showed the growing strength and depth of the squad. Some very notable efforts came from second row Ewan Sommers showing great Athleticism and winning 4 of the opposition throws, turning the tide in the visitors favour, time and again, alongside Ruari O Connell and Marcos Leahy, dominating the line outs with 100% success, as well as carrying strongly. Sam Enright , right back to his excellent form at No. 7 following injury, showed why he is such a valued addition to the team with an incredible turn of pace, great tackling and his ability to turn over the ball being a growing specialty of the open side wing forward. A number of barnstorming carries came from Eamon O’Connor continuing his excellent form and getting in for a superb try after a well rehearsed rolling maul, alongside the extremely talented, great line out lifter, and unstoppable runner Josh Ahern. There was another very strong front row performance from tight head prop Cian Carey, who has added superb loose running play to his game and was awarded with a cracking try in the second half, which was created by a superb shortened lineout move straight off the training park, and some great build up work by Eamon O’Connor.

Hooker Tadhg Mulvihill again hit every line out arrow perfectly despite the 50kmh wind and his incessant pressure in the loose, led to an excellent opportunist try from Captain Liam Hanrahan under the opposition posts. The link play and pass distribution from the vice captain scrum half Fionn Byrne in the rain and wind was simply extraordinary and added to by some very clever kick chasing by the Listowel number 9 with his decision speed at penalty time catching the opposition off guard. Out half Cathal Byrne showed superb and growing maturity and game management skills in calling the back plays and pinning back Cobh, time and again with his drop outs and his kicking from hand leading to two 50/22 line outs. The half backs tactics into the wind in the second half brought the confident centre partnership of Jack Buckley and Michael Coolahan to the fore with their passing clicking every time, and their line speed in defence pressurising the opposition and turning over ball for Listowel on multiple occasions. Man of the match went again to centre Michael Coolahan who received some perfect passes and superb support from Buckley and has now added strong aggressive tackling at speed into his game alongside great defensive positioning. The flying centres attacking running skills got him onto the end of a great forwards move in the first half to cross the line and an exceptional individual turnover, inside his 22, being converted by him into an under the posts score to finish off the opposition. MEANING OF LIFE

My friend is right. Yes! I spent 3 nights on a trolley in A&E. And thankfully l got sorted.

But l just want to say that the entire experience was amazingly positive. Prior to my little excursion, I was aware of the very critical reports circulating in the media relating to the situation in A&E. One was led to believe that utter pandemonium, turmoil, complete disarray, and chaos was playing out behind the scenes and the thought of ever ending up there terrified me. However what l witnessed, was a people working in tune and perfect harmony, doctors, nurses, ambulance staff, orderlies, cleaners, kitchen staff, nurses aids, office staff. There was such an air of cooperation and goodwill, everyone working in tandem for the good of the patients. There was such evidence of kindness and goodness from among the staff. It got me thinking about a scripture in James 1:17: Whatever is good and perfect comes to us from God, the Creator of all light and He shines forever without change or shadow.”

There is no substitute for kindness. It is straight from the throne of Heaven. Ephesians 4:32 was certainly very evident in A&E. It’s where God tells

I feel very grateful for the excellent care l received. Yes, it’s a tragedy that there is overcrowding and bed shortages in our hospitals. But the real tragedy is the presence of sickness, pain, wars, suffering and ultimately death in this fallen world. I learnt some valuable lessons on the trolley.

Physical sickness and distressing circumstances can often lead us to feel that God is far away. But scripture tells me that God is sovereign. He is Almighty over everything. Nothing happens out of His jurisdiction. He either causes something to happen or He allows something to happen. And He also is at His strongest in us when we’re at our weakest, because He tells us in 2 Corinthians 12:10 “My Grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”

I would be lost without Him.
