KERRY ROSE COMMUNITY TO HELP FUND REPAIR & REOPENING OF LISTOWEL COMMUNITY CENTRE
The 2023 Community Rose Selections were officially launched last week, with Community Rose events around the county being planned, to contribute to worthy local causes and fundraisers in each location. With the intention of putting community at the heart of the Rose of Tralee festival, the new Community Rose initiative is a fantastic opportunity to support community fundraising and makes the process of becoming a Rose or Rose Escort much easier. Each local event will be a great night of entertainment locally, with Roses and Rose Escorts on stage, and some great banter between the MCs and the audiences - all with the aim of showing local support and community spirit.
“The Kerry Rose Centre are delighted to be helping to raise funds throughout the Kingdom, and when we heard about the fire in the Listowel Community Centre last November, we knew straight away that they should be the beneficiaries of the Listowel Community Selection event,” said Suzan O’Gara, Kerry Rose Centre Co-ordinator and Festival Director. “In the spirit of supporting local and creating a positive community buzz in each of these locations, we are inviting all interested young women between 18 and 29 years of age, and young men aged 21 to 31, to send in their application forms via www.roseoftraleecommunities.com as soon as possible to ensure they’re on time to enter their local Community Rose selection events. Listowel has a fantastic community spirit that is palpable when you chat to locals - sure they’re the soundest town in Ireland - and it is plain to see that the community centre is at the heart of this town. The Listowel Community Rose Selection is taking place in the Listowel Arms on Friday the 31st of March, and is one of eight local community events taking place in the lead up to this year’s Kerry Rose Selection on Sunday the 14th of May. Each Community Rose Selection will be supporting a different local project or cause, and we plan to include even more Kerry communities next year and beyond, as we expand the programme further over the next three years.”
“Everyone at the Listowel Community Centre is absolutely thrilled to be receiving funds from the Listowel Community Rose Selection and we are so excited to join forces with the Rose of Tralee team for what we know will be a really fun and exciting event in Listowel in March,” said Trevor Horan, from the Community Centre.
“We were truly honoured and excited when we were invited to be part of this new aspect of the world-renowned Rose of Tralee Festival. The donation made from the Listowel Community Rose Selection will allow us to continue the repair work after the devastating fire we had in November, and get the place up and running again as soon as possible, so we really want the young ladies and gents in the Listowel area to get on board to represent their local community and to show their support by signing up to take part in the selection night.”
The confirmed Kerry Community Rose events are due to take place in Sneem, Killorglin, Kenmare, Tralee, Killarney, the ‘Skellig Coast’, Castleisland and Listowel throughout the month of March.
Selected Community Roses will hold their titles for a year and will also progress to take part in County Rose Selections where if selected, they will go on to represent their communities and counties on the International stage during the main Rose of Tralee Festival in August. While not all Community Roses can or will make it to the International Festival, they will wear the sash and remain as ambassadors of their locality at various local events throughout the year.
Winning Community Rose Escorts, who will be selected via a fun voting process, will take part in the County Selection event, and will be guaranteed an interview to be an official Rose Escort at the main Festival in August and of course attend the popular Rose Escort Bootcamp in June.
Applications to enter the 2023 Community Rose Selections for both Roses and Rose Escorts are now officially open. Visit www.roseoftraleecommunities.com for details or contact the Kerry Rose Centre team on any of their social media platforms or via email on kerryrosecentre@ roseoftralee.ie.
The 2023 Rose of Tralee International Festival will take place from August 18 – 22.
SAN RITA WELLNESS
Welcome to San Rita Wellness weekly column…We hope you are safe and well
Welcome to San Rita Wellness weekly column
Many of us are looking ahead now and planning for various upcoming events such as Confirmations,Holy Communions,Weddings or Holidays. Not to mention St Patrick’s Day, Mother’s Day and of course the big one Easter.
We all want to look and feel great for Easter so therefore we can look on Easter as a target for setting ourselves an overall personal goal. That means we are more likely to achieve it when we have a beginning and an end to that target.
A goal for you for Easter maybe you losing 7 lbs, dropping a dress size ,seeing a new number on the scales or clothes fitting better.
Know your goals
Once you have decided what changes you need to make to your lifestyle and feel ready to make them, it can be really helpful to set yourself goals. Goals help you focus on making realistic changes that will make a difference to your lifestyle and will be personal to you. That means you are more likely to achieve them.
When setting your goals, make sure they are S.M.A.R.T.
S - Specific A specific goal has a much greater chance of being achieved than a general goal.
M - Measurable Measure your progress weekly whether it’s the Scales, Clothes, Fitness or Mood.
A - Achievable Make sure your goal is achievable for YOU,that helps to make it more possible.
R - Relevant What will it mean to you when you reach your goal. How will you look, How will you feel?
T - Timely Every goal needs a target date. So there is a beginning and an end.
Now that you have set your goal it is time to recognise the changes you may need to make to your diet and lifestyle.
Here are some tips to help you:
* Eat regular well balanced meals and be aware of mindless snacking as the kettle may always be on the boil with everyone working or schooling from home.
* Include plenty of fruit and vegetables . The recommended daily amount of fruit and vegetables combined is 5 to 7 servings a day.
* Plan your meals ahead of time. You will be a lot more organised and you will get more variety into your meals.
* Drink plenty of water. It is recommended we consume 1 &1/2 to 2 litres a day. This is important to keep the body hydrated.
* Be active for at least 30 minutes a day, 5 times a week. This not alone helps to tone the body but it is also important for our mindset.

IRREPRESSIBLE LISTOWEL SECURE LAST-MINUTE DRAW TO KEEP QUARTER FINAL HOPES ALIVE LISTOWEL 26 – CASHEL 26
This was a truly epic contest in the Listowel Town Park, and the fantastic home support were treated to a tremendous battle between two evenly matched teams. This was the final group match with the winner guaranteed a quarter final spot, and the loser being eliminated.
Cashel looked strong from the start with their huge pack repelling Listowel’s first attack, and working their way down field to score the games opening try. Listowel managed to fight back with a well worked lineout maul making significant ground, and leading to a penalty which was taken quickly. After a series of forward carries with Cian Carey, and Tadhg Mulvihilll prominent, Josh
Ahern got to within a whisker of the line and managed to get the ball back to the quick thinking scrumhalf Fionn Byrne who dotted the ball down over the line. An uncharacteristic, missed conversion left the score at 7-5.
Cashel came back strongly, with any mistake by the Listowel team being punished by their strong forwards, who kept rumbling forward, and recycling which led to another Cashel try. With 5 minutes to go in the 1st half the ball was kicked into the Listowel half, and retrieved by Paul Lacoste, with the flying French outside back beating 3 defenders to set up the attack. He offloaded to Eamon O’Connor who brought the play up to the half way line, and the ball found its way to captain Liam Hanrahan just inside his own half. A brilliant combination of pace, footwork, and determination resulted in the number 8 beating 5 defenders and running over 50 meters to score an exceptional try. The conversion was scored to bring the half time score to 12-12.
Cashel showed what a strong team they are after this as they received a yellow card, but didn’t concede any points during the sin bin. In fact, they scored first in the 2nd half, through another typical series of forward runs. Listowel wouldn’t give up, and after Fionn Byrne refused to be brought to ground with the ball he shipped the ball from left to right through the hands of Cathal Byrne, Sam Enright, Jack Buckley, and finally to Ewan Somers on the wing, who still had 20 meters to run, and managed to ride 2 cover tackles and score in the corner. Outlhalf, Cathal Byrne somehow managed to slot the conversion from the very edge of the pitch to draw level once again at 19-19. However, Cashel once again came back, with some quick thinking resulting in them gaining possession from the kick off and scoring another try to go 26-19 up with 5 minutes to go. It looked like Listowel were down and out but they continued to fight, and after some great build up work by John Curtin, Listowel won a penalty just inside the Cashel half. After some nice carrying and build up work, the ball found it’s way to Paul Lacoste on the left, and he jinked inside 2 cover tackles to score. Listowel needed the conversion to draw level, and hearts sank as it drifted wide. However, Cashel had charged at the kick illegally, and Cathal Byrne got a second attempt which he cooly slotted with 1 min left. Somehow there was still time for Cashel to win the ball back and launch another attack, and they rumbled to within 5 meters of the Listowel line as they had done all day, but this time Listowel repelled them winning a turnover and kicking the ball dead to finish on a draw. Listowel’s man of the match was Liam Hanrahan for his exceptional performance and leadership.
Listowel must now face Cashel again this Sunday in Cashel, with the winner going into the quarter final, and the loser going into a play off.
Full Squad: John Curtin, Tadhg Mulvihill, Cian Carey, Ruari O’Connell, Eamon O’Connor, Josh Ahern, Sam Enright, Liam Hanrahan(c), Fionn Byrne, Cathal Byrne, Fionn McNamara, Jack Buckley, Jake Rochford, Harry Reidy, Paul Lacoste, Ryan Henderson, Jason Moriarty, Ewan Somers, Joseph Gilbert, James Roche, Carlos Lopez.

VALENTINE’S DAY
This Wednesday 14 February is the Feast Day of St. Valentine. St Valentine has long been venerated as the patron of sweethearts and happy marriages. Valentine was a priest in Rome and according to legend he was imprisoned for his beliefs. While he was in prison he befriended the jailer’s young daughter. The day he was to be taken away for execution he left a small bouquet of flowers and note in his cell for the girl which read ‘From your Valentine’. He was executed and died about 269. From this story the custom started of couples exchanging gifts on the saint’s feast day. Creid nó ná creid ach sin é an sceál.
CÚRSAÍ
CÚRSÁLA
Cúntas ó Tomás- Powerstown Park, Clonmel is the sport’s greatest arena. Spectators and competitors alike are drawn to this venue, from every county in Ireland, for the National Meeting, which is held at the start of February. The largest attendance ever, over a three day period, in the history of the sport over a 97 years was recorded this year on February 5th,6th and 7th.
The Champion Stakes, which comprises the greatest eight all age dogs in Ireland, is a prominent event on the third day’s card. In living memory, this event was never more competitive than it was this year. Even the bookmakers found it hard to pick their favourite.
The Saleen maestro, Patrick O’Connor had charge of two of the eight and would have had charge of three of the eight, but for an unfortunate incident that occurred at Knockgraffon earlier in the season which resulted in ‘Hope Razor’ sustaining a career ending injury.
‘Aghadown Wonder’ flying the flag of the Rebel County, lowered the Saleen sails, when defeating ‘Sammy Be’ on route to the final at the top end of the card, but ‘Express Razor’advanced from the bottom of the card. The final was now set and awaited with great anticipation.
Finals in coursing are rarely, if ever, one sided affairs and this was going to be no different. ‘Express Razor’ led out and although ‘Aghadown Wonder’ was never too far from his tail, Razor’ showed his supremacy throughout. To the cheers of the multitudes, our impeccable judge, Liam Kelly pulled the white flag to register ‘Express Razor’ in the history books as the Champion Stakes winner of 2023.
Congratulations are extended to Tom, Chrissie, Joe, Patrick and the wonderful behind the scenes Saleen team on their success and we wish them many more. The dog was also bred locally by Kieran Culhane.

LIOS TUATHAIL AC
Last weekend was the Munster Senior indoors in Nenagh where the Junior / Senior group had an impressive outing and many positive observations was received on how well the club is progressing. This is early days in the athletic calendar but some top class performances were delivered from the athletes. The highlight of the day was a Munster Senior 200m clean sweep 1-2-3 from our male sprint group.
Brendan oLeary won Gold in the 200m with a new PB and Sliver in the 400m putting a strong effort in the final lap. Great reward for hard work over the past few weeks. Louis oConnell won Silver in the 200m and Bronze with a PB in the 60m. Louis is putting a strong season together and is now consistently in the competitive end of the races. Johnny O’Sullivan the Senior of the group is back on the track after an absence for a few years. Great to have someone experience like Johnny in the club and Johnny can also move pretty fast winning a Bronze medal in the 200m. Great stuff from these young men.
Our female sprinters were not to outdone. Megan Lynch won Silver in the 60m with a consistent 7.9 secs and fourth in the 200m. Megan in the middle of the leaving cert is still performing well, so keep up the good work. Saoirse Dillion has a super day in her first outing of the season. Saoirse ran 2 excellent PBs and in doing so picked up 2 bronze individual medals at Senior level in the 60 and 200m. Great start to the indoor session and huge promise for the remaining of the year for this young upcoming sprinter. Sinead Hunt another of our senior athletes took part in the 60m and 200m in her first season opener and will improve further into the season. All three girls was part of the winning 4*200 relay team later in the day.
It was a sister act in the Munster Senior 400m ladies final with Emma and Rachel Neylon taking Gold and Silver respectively. A great battle down the home stretch where Emma just edged ahead to take the title in a new PB. Emma also ran in the 800m finishing fourth and Rachel was part of the Gold winning 4*200m Relay team. A good day work for the Neylon household. Well done to both girls.
Not to be out done, our throw group was also on the podium. Congrats to Padraic McCarthy winning Silver in the Shot Putt and Bronze in the WFD at Munster Senior Indoors. Another good performance from Padraic.
Individual success and Pbs is a result of hard work and dedication by the

Goals win matches and Duagh ensured that with a hat-trick when we met them in the North Kerry League, in Ballybunion on Sunday. They were the slicker outfit in the opening half, raising the green flag in the opening few minutes and added a further two goals before the interval. While we pegged them back to within five points, we trailed by 3-7 to 0-8 at the short whistle. We upped the tempo on the changeover, fighting hard for every ball and outscored our opponents by six points to two, keeping them scoreless until the final ten minutes. However, we ended up on the wrong side of the scoreline, 0-14 to 3-9. Our final round game is against Brosna next Sunday.
Beale Minors travel to play Lispole/Annauscaul on Saturday in the first round of the County League, Division 6B. The following weekend we host Fossa and then are away to Skellig/Valentia the next weekend. Other teams in this division are St Senans and Firies.

ASDEE GAA
North Kerry League Division 2 Rd 3, Knocknagoshel 6-16, Asdee 3-04, once again in this competition a depleted Asdee side travelled to Willie Walsh Park, Knocknagoshel on Sunday last where the home side romped to a facile win. However it was not all doom and gloom despite the 21 point victory; granted it was Knock who controlled the tie from the word go but Asdee in fairness never threw in the towel and kept plugging away. On the plus side Kieran Kelly made a welcome return after a lengthy absence due to injury and made his presence felt making some great runs through the middle which resulted in a well taken goal after 11 minutes. 4mts later as the home side were pressing but their 3pt lead was knocked on the head when Veteran Cyril Dineen turned his marker and had the sides all square at 1-5 to 2-2. This was the visitors last score of the half as James Walsh, Shane Brown,(2) and a penalty neatly put away by midfielder John Bell and at the interval the scoreline read; Knocknagoshel 4-11 Asdee 2-2. The changeover say little difference on the pattern of play but stern defending from John Daly, Kieran Kelly, Patrick Mulvihill and James Kelly our custodian were to help keep the score down. Paul O Carroll very much involved hit the net in the opening minute and points from Eoin Kennedy and Jack Hannon was our lot for the remainder of the game. John Doran and Stephen Lynch held their own at midfield while Ciaran Griffin and Jack Hannon who kicked on of the finest points of the game were always a threat. Still Knock held all the aces and with James Walsh a commanding figure, the McElligots, John Bell and Denis Roache to mention a few were on top of their game. Scores were always easier to come from the home side while Asdee not before now are finding it hard to hit the target.
GOLDEN GOAL, Week 3 winners of the Golden Goal were; (Kilkenny v Tipperary) Liam Doyle, Tullahinell, Conor Scanlon, Tullamore, Ballybunion and
Martin Stack, Tullahinell, Ballylongford, which is in conjunction with upcoming Fixtures in both National Football and Hurling League and Championship. (Televised games) Each winner will receive €40.Next week’s game will be Kerry v Mayo in Castlebar.
MINORS Northern Gaels are a combination of Asdee/Bally, Ballydonoghue and Clounmacon and will take part in Division 8 of the County Football League. The group will consist of; Ballymacelligott “B”, Kenmare Shamrocks, Legion “B” Dromid/Waterville and Laune Rangers “B”.
SCOR The North Kerry Finals of Scor Na Nog will go ahead at a venue to be confirmed on Sunday March 12th. The local club Cultural Officer, Kathleen Carmody will be organising the event so anybody interested in taking part should contact Kathleen as soon as possible. This happens to be the 50th Anniversary of Scor Na nOg so it is very important to have the club represented
