CIVIL WAR IN KERRY & IRELAND THE FOCUS OF THREE-DAY CONFERENCE IN TRALEE SOME
EVENTS WILL BE LIVE-STREAMED ON CONFERENCE
WEBSITE
Over 20 local, national and international academics, historians and experts will gather in Tralee next weekend to discuss and debate the Civil War in Kerry and beyond as part of a three-day multi-disciplinary conference which marks the centenary of the conflict. The ‘History, Memory and Legacy’ Conference will be held at the Siamsa Tíre Theatre from 23 to 25 February and is supported by Kerry County Council and the Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht Sport and Media through the Decade of Centenaries Programme, 2012-2023.
Opening on this Thursday evening with a keynote address from Professor Diarmaid Ferriter of UCD, the conference will hear from a wide array of experts on how and why Kerry came to be synonymous with the worst brutality and bitternesses of the Civil War a century ago. Other keynote speeches will be delivered by Dr Leeann Lane of Dublin City University and Dr Bill Kissane of the London School of Economics.
The conference programme includes a centenary concert including songs, music, poetry and drama from the Civil War period as well as a visual media exhibition drawing on first-hand accounts from the period. There is still ticket availability for the conference lectures and roundtable discussions, as well as the concert on Saturday 25 February, but some events, including a screening of the docudrama ‘Ballyseedy’ are sold out.
To meet demand and interest in the conference from around Ireland and around the world, all of the conference lectures, keynote addresses and roundtable discussions will be live-streamed on the Kerry Civil War Conference website. Other events will not be available via live-streaming.
Speaking ahead of the event, the Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, Catherine Martin, said: “As we navigate this challenging phase of commemoration, communities have had to acknowledge many sensitive and often still painful and personal events, particularly during the process of the establishment of the new, independent State in the midst of civil war. It is important that these events are examined within their proper local, national, and international contexts, and grounded in the principles of historical accuracy, academic integrity, and archival discovery.
“This multi-disciplinary conference, supported by my Department and Kerry County Council under the Community Strand, is a key event in this year’s Decade of Centenaries Programme. The conference proceedings will leave an important legacy as a significant resource for anyone with an interest in learning more about this period,” said Minister Martin.
One of the conference organisers, Dr Mary McAuliffe said: “The objective of the conference is to set what occurred in Kerry in wider national and international contexts through the presentation of new research, archival testimonies and the accounts of combatants, as well as civilians, so that, a century later, the Irish Civil War can be considered and understood afresh. “The level of interest in all of the events is very high and is indicative of a strong desire to engage with and discuss this traumatic period in our collective history,” said Dr McAuliffe.
Papers will be presented by a wide range of Kerry historians including Dr Richard McElligott, Dr Helene O’Keeffe, Dr Dáithí Ó Corráin, Helen O’Carroll, Owen O’Shea and Kieran McNulty. A roundtable discussion on the legacy of the Civil War in Kerry and beyond will be chaired by Dr David McCullagh and will feature an array of experienced historians and authors.
The Kerry Civil War Conference is organised and presented by Bridget McAuliffe, Dr Mary McAuliffe and Owen O’Shea
Tickets for all events are available through the Siamsa Tíre Box Office on 066 7123055.

SAN RITA WELLNESS
Welcome to San Rita Wellness weekly column…We hope you are safe and well Spring has sprung!!!!
Like the beautiful yellow golden daffodils we are all beginning to lift our heads up a little bit more now and show our true colours. We are also noticing the extra stretch in the evenings, the beautiful sunsets and every week brings us a week closer to Summertime. All of these things are beneficial to our overall health and well being.
Most of us know that we need to aim for a healthy, balanced diet and regular exercise to maintain our physical health. These same goals are also important when maintaining our mental health and well-being. Many people struggle with balanced eating, being active and feeling good about their bodies
Quick tips for healthy living
Healthy living is all about moderation, balance and flexibility. There will be some days when you don’t eat healthy foods and some days when you don’t do enough exercise. This is totally normal in your busy, sometimes stressful, life. The structure in many of our lives may have changed recently. You may get a more accurate picture of how you’ve been doing if you look back over the past month or so. Looking back gives us a reflection and from that we can then decide if there are changes to be made for the month ahead.
Here are some ideas:
* Aim to make small changes that will improve your health, both mental and physical.
* Nourish your body throughout the day—avoid skipping meals.
* Eat a variety of foods and aim for a balance over the month.
* Eat slowly and without the distractions of TV, computers or smart phones.
* Rather than worry about ‘good’ versus ‘bad’ foods, remember that moderation is the key.
* Try to eat more fruits and vegetables.
* Drink lots of water. It helps reduce fatigue and replenishes the body.
* Use caffeine in moderation, particularly if you are prone to anxiety or sleep problems.
* Listen to your body’s signals—it will let you know when you are full or hungry.
* Become more conscious of why you eat when you are not really hungry.
* Use exercise as a way to deal with stress.
* Get 7 to 8 hours sleep each night.
* Slowly increase your physical activity level.
Try adding in extra activity throughout your normal day, such as parking away from the supermarket door like many of us are not inclined to do, using the stairs instead of the elevator, being more mindful of your step count everyday. Aim for at least 10,000 steps a day.
Remind yourself that weight and shape are not the only way to evaluate your self-worth— think of at least one other way that shows you are a worthwhile, lovable, talented person who has something to offer the world. Like the daffodils we all have our own individuality and beauty.
You don’t have to make big changes to improve your wellness and maintain good mental health. But every change we make can benefit us. When it comes to healthy eating and exercise, every little change counts!
At San Rita Wellness our ethos is “ Eat well, Feel well, Live well “
We believe that when we “Eat well“ we “Feel well“ and it flows into “Living well“

NO MIDDLE PATH
By Owen O’Shea
The violence and divisions caused by the Irish Civil War of 1922–23 were more vicious, bitter and protracted in County Kerry than anywhere else in Ireland. For generations, the fratricide, murder and executions that occurred there have been synonymous with the worst excesses of the brutality which followed the split over the AngloIrish Treaty of 1921.
In this compelling new history of the conflict in his native county, Owen O’Shea offers fresh insights into atrocities such as the landmine executions at Ballyseedy and Knocknagoshel, and their cover-ups, and also the misery and mayhem of the conflict for the wider population.
The immense trauma and hardship faced by combatants and their families, as well as the legacy of ill health and psychological scars left on survivors are explored for the first time. Also presented is a catalogue of the intimidation, destruction and lawlessness which severely affected civilians who had no involvement in the war but suffered greatly, sometimes losing their lives.
No Middle Path offers an engrossing account of the terrible events in Kerry, and their shocking and enduring legacy.

KILFLYNN
KILFLYNN CANCER SUPPORT GROUP
After a break of three years, the Kilflynn Cancer Support Group table quiz returned on Wednesday, December 28th last. The quiz was again a huge success with thirty-three tables competing, raising €2820 for our benefiting charities, Recovery Haven, Kerry Hospice and Kerry Cancer Support. On the night, Dermot Crowley, Recovery Haven, and Breda Dyland, Kerry Cancer Support, thanked the organisers and competitors for their continued support. The standard of answering was very high and the winning team, Bridget, Thomas, Patrick and Margaret Quille, Muireann O’Shea, Cathal Byrne and Catherine Cronin achieved a full house, eighty points out of eighty. They were closely followed by the Barry and Nicholson families. The organisers would like to thank Parker’s Pub and Herbert’s Bar for hosting the event, and John McElligott for organising the sound system. Thanks again to Conor and Daragh Breen for their musical contribution, and to all those who helped in the preparation and running of the quiz. Special thanks to Joe McAuliffe, Margaret and John Mahony and Caroline and Frank Lynch for their administrative skills. Thanks to the numerous businesses, families and individuals who donated items for raffles and prizes. However, the quiz could not have been such a success without the continued support of the people of Kilflynn, Abbeydorney and surrounding parishes, who turned up on the night and gave so generously. Your support is greatly appreciated. The quiz night again exceeded all expectations and we look forward to the next edition at Christmas 2023. The money raised on the night will, this week, be presented to the three charities, each receiving €940.

Some of the large group of concerned residents of Listowel pictured at a Rally last Sunday. The group opposes the current open border policy of our Government, where it is proposed that a large number of refugees / migrants will be housed in The Old Convent. They would welcome any genuine refugees who are fleeing any war but are worried about undocumented young men being shipped into the community, like what is happening throughout Ireland currently. They are looking for communication from the government and demand that no unvetted or undocumented asylum seekers are housed here. Another Rally will take place this Sunday starting at Convent Cross from 1pm and anyone concerned is more than welcome to attend.

CÚRSAÍ EAGLAISE
This Wednesday 22 February is Ash Wednesday, a Day of Fast and Abstinence. Blessed Ashes will be distributed after the 11.30am Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Tarbert. Traditionally it was the start of Lent, a 40 day period of fasting and abstinence leading up to Easter Sunday. Catholics over the age of 14 were expected to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday and all Fridays in Lent. As children we were encouraged to give up sweets and other treats for the benefit of ‘the Holy Souls’. Nowadays, people are expected to give up something and contribute the monies saved to Trocaire and other charitable causes.

BEALE GAA
Beale seniors shared the points with Brosna in our last round game of the North Kerry League on Sunday. We controlled the game in the first half. The lads dug deep with good teamwork and swift movement of the ball, kicking the opening three points. A goal in the fourteenth minute gave us a six-point cushion, 1-4 to 0-1. We added a further three points and went in at the interval seven points to the good, 1-7 to 0-3.
The teams exchanged points on the changeover and with ten minutes left we still had an advantage of six points. But our opponents pulled us back, nipping away at our lead, kicking 1-3 without reply. With the last kick of the game, they found the net for that all-important goal to share the spoils with us. The game ended 1-11 apiece.
Beale team and scores: Joe Downey, Daithí Toomey, Shane Joy, Andrew O’Connor, Conor Toomey, Phillie Blake, Johnny O’Sullivan, Fionnán Toomey (capt), Neilus Mulvihill, Barry O’Neill, Ian Mannix (0-4), Callum McSweeney (1-1), Ger O’Gorman, Bernard O’Callaghan (0-3(2f)) and Eric Daly (0-3). Substitutes Darragh Buckley for Ger O’Gorman, Diarmuid O’Mahony for Callum McSweeney (inj), Jack Mallon for Darragh Buckley (inj), Podge Holly for Johnny O’Sullivan (inj) and Rory Mulvihill for Ian Mannix.
With three points from four games, this marks the end of our campaign in the North Kerry League, and we focus our attention on the County League. We contest Division 4 again this year. Our first game is on the weekend of March 19th when we host Sneem/Derrynane. Then, at the beginning of April, we host Cromane and travel to St Senans at Easter.
While the result was not in our favour on Saturday afternoon, it is heartening
to see Beale minors back in action this year. We struggled for the past few years to field at this level, with our players teaming up with Ballyduff last year and Finuge in previous years. We look forward to great games by this young squad under the stewardship of Alan Scanlan, David Tyrrell and Maurice Mannix.
A tough start to the County League campaign as we came away empty-handed when we travelled to play Lispole/Annauscaul in the first round. The early concession of goals did not help our cause. We created some good attacking play in the first half and raised the green flag twice. Our boys worked hard and half time gave them a chance to regroup. The second half saw an improved performance from more of the players and superb goalkeeping saved two almost certain goals. The game ended with a convincing win for the opposition. The final score read Beale 3-4, Anauscaul/Lispole 4-13.
Beale team and substitutes: Brian Dineen, Oisín Buckley, Dara O’Connor, Fionnán Maloney, Archie Walsh, Cormac Scanlan, Fiachra Buckley, Christopher Kiely (0-2 (1f)), Con Fitzsimons (1-0), Leigh Meehan (1-1 (1f)), Daithí Keane Tyrrell, Charlie Ryan (0-1), Kean O’Keeffe, Shay Murphy (1-0) and Dara Rahilly.
We host Fossa in Páirc de Staic on Sunday at noon in the second round. The next round game will be away to Skellig/Valentia. Other teams in this division are St Senans and Firies.
Beale seniors travel to the Dingle peninsula this weekend to compete in the Comórtas Peile Páidí Ó Sé football tournament. This famed club Gaelic football tournament and festival has been taking place for over thirty years and is one of the biggest and longest running club competitions in GAA history. Thirteen counties from the four provinces as well as one UK club will take part in the competition, with 22 men’s and ladies club teams competing over the weekend. Beale GAA Club is saddened by the recent passing of Les Collins, RIP. A devoted sportsman, soccer was his main sport, and he had a keen interest in golf. Les was a true friend of Beale GAA and was very proud of his son, Paul, wearing the green and red of the club down the years.
Les was well known for selling our weekly Lotto tickets for many years. He had it down to a fine art and people reached into their pockets and handbags as soon as Les walked into the pubs. He just handed people the tickets and they gave him the money. Les was well known for his quick wit and the fun that he generated, and this was testament to his popularity.
For many years, Lea soldiered with his great friend, Tony Moore, and this dynamic duo brought great fun and craic to the local quizzes. We are grateful to them both for sharing their time and humour when we held fund-raising quizzes for the Beale Ladies team down the years.
Beale GAA Club extend deepest sympathies to Susie, Paul, Bryan and Emma and the extended Blake and Collins families. Solas Mhic Dé ar a anam dhïl. Ní bheidh a leithêid ann arís.
The Every Step Counts challenge, in association with Irish Life, ended on Wednesday. Well done to all who clocked up the miles for the club over the past five weeks. We hope you feel healthier and fitter after your great efforts walking, running or jogging around our beautiful beaches, countryside and town. As a result of the great efforts of all who took part, we are placed fourth in Kerry and in the top twenty in Munster. Well done, everyone!

Ballylongford GAA - Club Notice
Walkway & Grounds - NO DOGS ALLOWED (EXCEPT GUIDE DOGS)
Due to health and safety reasons, our GAA club is banning people from walking their dogs on the club’s walkway and grounds because of the continued fouling of the area. This is down to the non-compliance by a few owners to clean up their dog mess, so the decision was made in the interest of protecting the children who train and are involved in activities in the area. The decision is regrettable but the club feels it is in the best interest of the club members and it is hoped for dog owners to co-operate.

MAGICIAN MICHAEL COOLAHAN IS HAT-TRICK HERO AS LISTOWEL U 16 RFC REACH MUNSTER 1/4 FINAL
CASHEL 15 -v- LISTOWEL 32
What a day for the rampaging under-dogs from Listowel who just never know when to give up against Munsters best!
At 15 - 5 down with 15 minutes to go and the superb Cashel forwards rampant, it took incredible belief, and a never say die attitude from Listowel to firstly front up, and then demolish the opposition against all the odds.
A first half to forget apart from a superb try from Coolahan, away from home in excellent conditions, every Listowel move seemed to go wrong but only served to galvanise the Listowel squad into action when the chips were down. Coolahan was electric in getting over for a second try with 15 minutes left to get it back to 15 - 10, when an amazing run from 75m out, from the rampaging super prop John Curtin, ended up under the posts. The try was converted by outhalf Cathal Byrne and Listowel were finally 2 points ahead with 7 minutes left. A penalty award for Listowel 30m out into a light wind followed and after an earlier missed kick, captain Liam Hanrahan pointed to the posts and the outhalf Byrne showed great composure to put 5 points between the sides. What followed was just superb with Sam Enright getting an excellent pass from Curtin in midfield and sprinting in from half way around 3 tacklers, and man of the match Michael Coolahan was then set free with an exceptional pass from Jack Buckley, and showed great speed to finish off another try, his third, under the posts at the final whistle.
A serious full team performance from a talented team with an attitude to admire, Listowel fully deserve their quarter final berth where just about anything is possible!
Quarter Final to be played at home in Listowel vs Dungarvan RFC on the 4th or 5th March. Exact date and time will be announced on facebook. Let’s get a big home crowd for this fantastic and entertaining team!
Listowel team from back left to right: Coach Sean Leahy, Cian Carey, Ewan Somers, Sam Enright, Eamon O’ Connor, Harry Reidy, John Curtin, Tadhg Mulvihill, Jake Rochford, Fionn Byrne(V. Cpt), Liam Hanrahan (Cpt), Josh Aherne, Michael Coolahan, David Byrne(coach).
Front: Fionn McNamara, Jason Moriarty, Jack Buckley, Paul Lacoste, Cathal Byrne, Ruari O’Connell, James Roche, Marcos Leahy.

MEANING OF LIFE
“How can one man be so powerful? He is just one man but he’s wreaking havoc. Just one man.... and he’s getting away with it. “
Not for the first time, our conversation was about the Russian President, Vladimir Putin and the invasion of Ukraine. A year on and there is no end to the war in sight.
A quick Google search revealed the names of some other brutal dictators in history..... Joseph Stalin who was responsible for the deaths of 20 million people, Vladimir Lenin, who had millions imprisoned in labour camps, Adolf Hitler under whose regime 11 million people died, Mao Ze Dong whose politics led to the deaths of 40 million, and in the present day Kim Jong- Un rules North Korea as a totalitarian dictatorship and only God knows what goes on there. It’s incredible that one human being can cause such destruction, tyranny and oppression. Just one man.
Our conversation got me thinking about another MAN.
Just one MAN but in His case He GAVE His life to save countless millions of people.
In the book of Isaiah chapter 53 Jesus is called “...the man of sorrows..” because of how much pain, suffering and sorrow He endured. “He was despised and rejected by mankind, a Man of suffering and familiar with pain, and we hid our faces from Him. He was despised and we held Him in low esteem.”
Why? Why did Jesus, true God and true Man take

on such suffering? Why did He leave the glories of Heaven and submit to the limitations of human nature through the miracle of the incarnation? Why did He choose to suffer all that humanity suffers? And finally why did He suffer the wrath of God by becoming sin bearer for all of mankind?
Again scripture gives us the answer. I read in the Gospel of John 3:16 “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.”
God is not a brutal dictator but a loving, holy, just Father, who wants everyone to “taste and see that the Lord is good.”
We can trust the One,True and Living God. 1 Thessalonians 5:9-10 puts it like this;
“God didn’t set us up for angry rejection, but for salvation by OUR MASTER JESUS CHRIST. He died for us,a death that triggered life. Whether we’re awake with the living or asleep with the dead, we’re ALIVE with Him.”
There is no one else Who loves us so much and is waiting for us to trust Him and believe that He means everything He tells us in His Word. Just ONE MAN and His name is Jesus.

Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never been known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. M.K.
