KERRY COLLEGE OPEN WEEK –“A FANTASTIC EVENT”

Kerry College Open Week 2023 was a huge success with thousands of students, career changers and jobseekers attending campus locations in Listowel, Clash Road and Monavalley in Tralee.

More attended the Careers Event on Monday evening, the Parent/Guardian/Applicant Information Session on Tuesday evening and the Apprenticeship Open Evening on Thursday.

This week was a wonderful opportunity for prospective learners to talk to staff and current learners, and explore the campus facilities to see the broad range of courses on offer at the different campuses. Teachers, learning support and guidance staff at the Clash/Denny and Listowel Campus were available on the day to discuss the multitude of courses for progression and employment available in Kerry College and for visitors to see first-hand all that Kerry College has to offer.

Principal of Clash, Denny Street and Listowel Campuses, Mr. Stephen Goulding, welcomed Miriam Magner Flynn from Career Decisions and The Two Norries to the Clash Campus on Tuesday and they proved to be a huge hit on the night. He and his staff were especially delighted to welcome visitors to the new Kerry College Campus in Listowel. Principal, Stephen Goulding felt both learners and parents now consider Further Education and Training (FET) as a viable route to both employment and progression to Higher Education. A wealth of FET options are open to learners on the CAO application system and the huge course choice available represents an opportunity for learners to sample a career choice that is affordable before choosing a longer term path.

The Killorglin Campus staff travelled to the Monavalley Campus during Open Week to meet and speak with prospective learners. From the Outdoor Education and Training tent visitors were given the opportunity to speak with experienced instructors about the high quality and innovative Outdoor Education and Training courses on offer in Kerry College Killorglin Campus and even try out a few new skills. As we move towards a more sustainable and environmentally aware society, the courses from Killorglin Campus offer a chance to train those who will connect our population with the environment. Two of the instructors were also interviewed on the Jerry O’Sullivan show and discussed the various opportunities available to those who want to work in the outdoors. Keep an eye on the Killorglin Campus this year as there are many new courses in development across the whole outdoor sector so there might be something there for you.

In the Monavalley Campus attendees had the opportunity to visit the Skills Village which was showcasing Stone Crafting, Plumbing, Fibre Technician, Medical Administration, Overhead Lines and many more apprenticeships and courses. Visitors could try their hand at basic skills and find inspiration for their future.

2,000 visitors attended the Apprenticeship Open Evening in the Monavalley Campus on Thursday evening which was over double the number of visitors last year. They had the chance to meet Kerry based employers who take on apprentices on a regular basis. They also had the opportunity to hear what it was like to work as an apprentice and build a career ‘earning while learning’. There were over 35 employers at the event this year and we would like to thank each and every one of them for coming along. Some included Dairymaster, ESB Networks, Energywise Ireland, FIT, Liebherr, O’Carroll Engineering, OPW, Mayo Sligo ETB (Butchery Apprenticeship), TLI Group, Torc Precision Engineering Ltd, Irish Naval Service to name but a few.

Manager of the Monavalley Campus, Con O’Sullivan feels this is just the beginning of a wider change: “The level of public engagement across our Open Week is a clear sign that parents, school leavers, career changers and jobseekers are looking for a more direct route to work – with increasing demand on our suite of accelerated practical skills training options; such as Apprenticeship and Professional Development programmes. Our responsive and agile team in Monavalley is best positioned to create a suite of training options that is both anticipative and responsive to business needs, informed by the work of our Business Support Unit.

Kerry College runs courses all year round –you can view their courses on www.college.ie or call their admissions office in Tralee on 066 714 9696 or 064 662 2593 in Killarney.

GABRIEL FITZMAURICE BOOK LAUNCH AT ST. JOHN’S THEATRE & ARTS CENTRE THIS THURSDAY 2ND MARCH

The latest collection of poetry ‘Gan Focal: Frugal Speech’ from Gabriel Fitzmaurice will be launched at St. John’s Theatre & Arts Centre on this Thursday 2nd March 2023 at 8pm. This book launch is one of the events organised by St. John’s Theatre & Arts Centre as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge, the biggest Irish language festival in Ireland and in the world.

Seachtain na Gaeilge le Energia is an international Irish language festival and one of the biggest celebrations of our native language and culture that takes place each year in Ireland and in many other countries.

‘Gan Focal: Frugal Speech’ is a bilingual collection of poetry from the pen of Moyvane poet, Gabriel Fitzmaurice, published by Arlen House. Some years ago, Fitzmaurice published three books of poetry in Irish along with a couple of poetry books, also in Irish, for children. They were welcomed for ‘the independence of this new voice in Irish poetry’.

These books are long out of print. Now, Fitzmaurice has chosen twenty of these poems to be reprinted in this book. He has also translated them into English. In these poems he deals with love, politics, angst, faith, music and poetry in a voice that is at once traditional and new.

Illustrated by Brenda Fitzmaurice these poems bring immediate pleasure to the reader while at the same time making them ponder what is being said.

An Art Exhibition by Brenda Fitzmaurice, who has illustrated the poems in the book, will also be unveiled on the night. Her work will be on view at St. John’s Theatre & Arts Centre for the month of March. Born and raised in Tarbert, Brenda Fitzmaurice lives and works in Moyvane. Inspired by the landscape of rural Kerry, she paints mostly in oils and has collaborated with poets such as Mary Kennelly.

Kerry Sports Star Dara Ó Cinnéide (RTÉ RnaG) will officially launch the book on Thursday 2nd March at 8:00pm. Joe Murphy or Vicar Joe as he’s better known around Listowel, will MC the night and entertainment will be provided by noted accordion player Richard Casey from Causeway.

Entry is free to this event agus beidh céad míle fáilte roimh gach duine.

CAROLINE’S DÓTERRA ESSENTIAL OILS

CAROLINE’S POD OF POSITIVITY

Welcome to my weekly column. My name is Caroline and as a certified DóTERRA essential oil specialist I have been delighted to help, guide and support so many people along with their friends and families on their essential oil journey throughout North Kerry and West Limerick. I know how these oils can support the Body, the Mind and the Mood and each week I’ll be sharing lots of tips and information on Self-Care, Wellness, Love and Gratitude when using DóTERRA’S essential oils as part of your every day routine.

Spring Time & Clary Sage -

An Awakening for Both Body & Mind.

As we welcome March we carry forth the principle of a new month, a new chapter and how it can bring newfound courage, strength, positivity, patience, inner peace, and self-love into our lives. Just like the Spring and the awakening nature world around us, dóTerras Clary Sage essential oil gently awakes our vision and our clarity. This beautiful oil assists us in changing our perceptions and allows us to remain open to the possibility of new ideas, new projects, and new perspectives. It helps us in opening creative channels and clearing creative blocks while eliminating distractions from the mind. Clary Sage is very spiritual and one of the finest oils to use in diffusing, applying on the brow chakra when meditating, or applying it behind your ears as it dispels darkness and encourages individuals to see their limiting beliefs. Clary Sage boosts our mood and our emotional well-being while increasing our ability to visualise and imagine new possibilities.

It dates to the Middle Ages and it includes relaxing and soothing properties that can help with the rejuvenation and calming of the skin. It is also a beautiful body balancing essential oil. When Clary Sage is diffused in any one room of your home, office, school, or work place it adds to a relaxing environment. Clary Sage can be taken internally and can be a great natural aid to promote a restful night’s sleep. Many people like to mix it with cooled boiled water and spray it onto the bed linen & curtains before they go to sleep. During a menstrual cycle, Clary Sage can be applied and massaged to the abdomen area for a soothing relief and is very popular amongst teenagers. It is very relaxing when added to a warm bath with some Epsom salts or on its own.

Clary Sage can also be added to your shampoo and hair conditioner to promote healthy hair and scalp and my Top Tip would be to mix with dóTerra’s Rosemary and Lavender essential oils. The Clary Sage plant can grow up to six feet in height and is steam distilled from the flower part of the plant. A favourite among my Pod followers, you can order your Clary Sage essential oil by contacting me on the number below.

DóTERRA knows that essential oils must be pure and potent in order to best fulfill the needs of those that use them. Too often, essential oils available for purchase contain contaminants and filler substances that weaken the essential oil’s effectiveness. With the sole purpose to provide pure and potent essential oils, doTERRA ensures that their oils are free of harmful contaminants and fillers through the CPTG Certified Pure Tested Grade™ protocol and we are so fortunate that DōTerra now have their own manufacturing plant in Blarney Business Park in County Cork.

You can check out my Facebook page Caroline’s Pod of Positivity where I have information on dóTERRAS essential oils. To book your consultation or oil experience appointment you can reach me on the number below and together we will start you on your journey of health and wellness using the oils.

Until next time, I leave you with our thought for the week, ‘Spring Time is a lovely reminder to us of how beautiful change can truly be’

Alongside this, Jodie Keane, Marie Keane, Faith Kennelly and Rebekah Sheehy have qualified for the regional final of the Irish Debating Competition; a competition for English speaking schools to showcase their debating prowess through the medium of Irish.

SAN RITA WELLNESS

Welcome to San Rita Wellness weekly column…We hope you are safe and well

At San Rita Wellness your self care and well being is important to us. Wellness covers a variety of areas such as eating healthily, being active and looking after ourselves both mentally and physically. One of the ways of looking after ourselves is getting a good nights sleep. But that’s probably easier said than done.

Sleeping well directly affects your mental and physical health. Health experts recommend that we should try and get 7 to 9 hours sleep a night. Fall short and it can take a serious toll on your daytime energy, productivity, emotional balance, and even your weight. We can often feel moody, short tempered and reach for sugary foods to give ourselves a bit of an energy boost. Yet many of us regularly toss and turn at night, struggling to get the sleep we need.

If you want to optimize your health or lose weight, getting a good night’s sleep is one of the most important things you can do.

Here are some tips to help you sleep better at night.

Sleep Routine -

Try to go to sleep and get up at the same time every day. This helps set your body’s internal clock and optimize the quality of your sleep.

Feeling drowsy -

Having a heavy meal late in the evening can leave you feeling sleepy way before your bedtime. get off the couch and go for a short walk, call a friend, or get your clothes ready for the next day.

Screen time -

Screen time limits your dream time. Avoid bright screens within 1-2 hours of your bedtime. The blue light emitted by your phone, tablet, computer is especially disruptive. Say no to late-night television.

Wind down -

Have a relaxing wind down routine. Have a bath ,listen to music or read a book. When it’s time to sleep, make sure the room is dark. Use heavy curtains or shades to block light from windows, or try a sleep mask.

Avoid alcohol -

Having a couple of drinks at night can negatively affect your sleep and hormones. Alcohol is known to cause or increase the symptoms of sleep apnea, snoring, and disrupted sleep patterns

Tidy room -

To optimize your bedroom environment, try to minimize external noise, light, and artificial lights from devices like alarm clocks. Make sure your bedroom is a quiet, relaxing, clean, and enjoyable place.

Daily Exercise -

People who exercise regularly during the daytime sleep better at night. Regular exercise also improves the symptoms of insomnia and sleep apnea and increases the amount of time you spend in the deep, restorative stages of sleep.

Limit Caffeine -

Caffeine stimulates your nervous system and may stop your body from naturally relaxing at night. In one study, consuming caffeine up to 6 hours before bed significantly worsened sleep quality

KATIE O’BRIEN PRESENTS: CLEAN AT 17

ST. JOHNS THEATRE: 8TH MARCH - DIRECTED BY URSULA MARTINEZ

This spring, award winning actress and comedienne Katie O’Brien presents her long-awaited autobiographical show Clean at 17 at St. Johns Theatre Listowel. This is Katie’s story about navigating adulthood as an addict, an artist, and a performer while dealing with the assumptions and segregation that come with being an addict, both clean and using.

Katie has spent the last 23 years on a journey to free herself from pathologization, while also living the secret life of someone who stopped drinking before it was legal to do so. Katie reveals her thoughts and lived experience of having existed in both worlds of addiction: the before and after in Clean At 17.

“When performance is at its best it becomes less about the subject matter and more about the experience of being enthralled. Katie O’Brien takes hugely complicated subject of addiction, makes it personal and delivers it with sharp wit, devastating self-deprecation and comic brilliance.” Gary Cook (Dir. Lancaster Fringe 2019).

About Katie O’Brien:

Katie began her career as a Fine Artist, creating sculptures, installations, and personas, which led to her work in comedy and, more recently, as a Writer Performer creating autobiographical work. Katie founded The Muffia, a feminist performance group, after university because she wanted to engage with people through humour and political topics. Through humour, improvisation, and autobiographical material, her work exposes society’s hypocrisy. Katie’s work incorporates elements of clown, cabaret, and immersive theatre. Katie’s strength is her ability to work in real time and respond to the audience’s reactions or responses. Katie creates work that explores the unspoken or reveals another side of a well-known subject. Katie will always make you laugh and think, no matter what she is addressing. Katie’s current work uses her own experience with addiction and 12-step “recovery” to question stereotypes and assumptions about alcohol and substance dependency, pathology identity and mental health.

LISTOWEL CELTIC

Listowel Celtic U 13 boys are through to the quarter final of the SFAI National Cup after securing a brilliant 2-1 win against Springfield Ramblers on Saturday February 25th. This is a fantastic achievement for this team and managers. Daithi Laide scored an opening goal mid way through the first half and Mason Sheehy Elston scored Listowel‘s second goal in the 2nd half. Springfield Ramblers pulled one back from a penalty two minutes from the end but Listowel defended resolutely to secure the win. This was a brilliant win for these boys who put in a stellar performance on the pitch. We thank all the support they have had. We now await the draw to see who they will be playing in the quarter final.

Our U16 boys were playing in the last 32 of the SFAI Trophy against Killarney Athletic on Sunday 26th. Sadly this game ended in sudden death and 22 penalties later, Killarney Athletic secured the win. Our boys did nothing wrong and it was a brilliant performance by them all. This is always a difficult way to finish a game, our boys can hold their heads high with the performance they gave.

A number of our teams are in action this weekend, please keep an eye on out Facebook page for details of fixtures.

Listowel Celtic will be participating in this years St Patrick’s Day parade in Listowel. As this is our 60th year since the foundation of our club it would be fantastic to have a large group representing the club. More details to follow

BEALE GAA

Beale seniors were victorious in Dingle on Saturday, winning the Comórtas Peile Páidí Ó Sé football tournament. This famed club Gaelic football tournament and festival has been taking place for over thirty years and is one of the biggest and longest running club competitions in GAA history. Thirteen counties from the four provinces as well as one UK club took part in the competition, with 22 men’s and ladies club teams competing over the weekend.

In our first game in the junior competition, we were triumphant over Camogue Rovers of Limerick. Played in glorious sunshine in Gallarus, two goals in each half ensured us a place in the cup final. St James’ of Cork was our opposition in the final. It was tit for tat in the opening quarter, with the teams exchanging points. A goal in the 7th min gave us the impetus and we were 1-7 to 0-4 ahead at the short whistle. We were first off the mark again on the changeover and a goal after ten minutes put us in the driving seat, ahead by eight points. However, our opponents hit back and raised the green flag. The teams went onto exchange points and were won out on a score line of 2-12 to 2-6.

Beale seniors contest County League, Division 4, again this year. Our first game is on the weekend of March 19th when we host Sneem/Derrynane. Then, at the beginning of April, we host Cromane and travel to St Senans at Easter. Teams in our group for the Junior Championship are Knocknagoshel, Kilgarvan and Reenard. We travel to Renard for our first game. Details to be confirmed. Beale minors put in a great team performance on Sunday in their second County League match. Playing with a strong breeze in the first half, we started very strongly, scoring an early goal and tacking on 2 quick points to lead by 5 points within the first 10 minutes. However, Fossa came into the game and scored a few points to settle themselves. We still created lots of scoring opportunities but did not convert. . We held a 5-point lead going into the interval but then Fossa struck for a goal to leave only a 2-point gap at half time. The second half started with our boys pressing hard to get scores but found it difficult to finish. Concession of two frees in front of goal allowed Fossa to draw level. The visitors now took the initiative and surged ahead by 3 points. But our boys did not lie down and came back into the game with a well-taken goal to draw level. The game was now in the melting pot with both teams having chances to score. Fossa took one of their chances again to get ahead by a point. We pressed for an equaliser and had lots of chances but just could not get that elusive point. The final whistle blew with Beale losing by a point, 2 - 8 to 1-12.

A disappointing result for the boys but lots of positives to be taken out of it with great effort and work rate from the players. Beale team: Brian Dineen, Fionnán Maloney, Killian Scanlan, Kean O’Keeffe, Archie Walsh, Fiachra Buckley, Dara O’Connor, Daithí Keane Tyrrell (0-2), Cormac Scanlan (1-1), Shay Murphy (1-1), Christopher Kiely (0-2(1f)), Oran O’Sullivan, Charlie Ryan, Leigh Meehan (0-2(2f)), Con Fitzsimons, Dara O’Rahilly, Jack O’Connor, Nathan Austin and Tadhg Brady.

Our next round game is on Saturday at 3 o’clock in Valentia against Skellig/ Valentia. We welcome St Senans to Páirc de Staic the following Saturday and our final round game is away to Firies on March 18th.

This week’s Beale Lotto took place on Sunday night in The Exchange Bar. The Lotto jackpot was not won and there were three Match-3 winners. Ann Marie Butler, Seân Sheehy and KerriAnne Williams-Kissane each receive €35. Jack MacAuliffe won 5 free tickets. Numbers drawn were 4, 16, 26 and 32

Next week’s lotto jackpot is €2,850. Draw takes place on Sunday night in Mikey Joe’s at 9 o’clock. A huge ‘míle buíochas’ to everyone who supports and promotes the Beale Lotto. Tickets, €2 each or 3 for a fiver, may be bought online and are available in Joyce’s Newsagents and in the local pubs. Terms and conditions on tickets and social media pages.

The Every Step Counts challenge, in association with Irish Life, ended last week. The lucky clubs who won prizes have been announced. Unfortunately

FINUGE GAA

SENIOR: The North Kerry league is complete for our seniors with the last game a back game against Listowel Emmets, in which our neighbours came out on top. Attention has turned to the county league with the first game fixed for weekend of the 18th/19th of March away to Laune Rangers B. Division 5 is divided into two groups of seven teams each this year, with the top teams from each group going into a Cup competition with the lower half going into a shield.

MINORS: Our minor team took to the field against Castlegregory recently in their opening round. While they were well held on the day by better opposition, they could have been closer. This is a very young group of minors and their development will take time. Minor is a very important grade for the longterm health of any club and the club is looking forward to the future with this team and those coming behind them. Last weekend’s game against Knock/ Brosna was postponed and this Saturday the team play Gneeveguilla away.

U15: The boys are back training with a few weeks and are getting ready for the season ahead. They are in a competitive Division 5 with mostly amalgamated clubs. This always provides a stiff task for single clubs against two, three and even four team amalgamated teams!

U13: This team are back training with a few weeks now and have a challenge game against St Senans this Sunday evening in Finuge as part of their preparations for the county league.

U11: Training has commenced on Thursday evenings and the team are looking forward to another exciting year ahead! Anyone interested in playing football at this age are very welcome to make contact with a club officer or call by Thursday evening for more information.

U9: This group are also back training with a couple of weeks. Anyone interested in playing football at this age are very welcome to make contact with a club officer or call by Monday evenings (at Lixnaw astro) for more information. U7: The team will be back training in the next week or two. Anyone interested in playing football at this age are very welcome to make contact with a club officer for more information. Keep an eye on social media also for more details as they arise.

MEMBERSHIP is now due to all members old and new for 2023. Please reach out to your respective manager, if on a team. If a general member, we will be in contact with details. Thank you for your continued support, it is greatly appreciated by the club.

CÚL CAMP: The dates are known for the various Cul Camps and the Finuge camp will be held week July 31st - August 4th. This is always a great week of serious fun so keep an eye out for booking details which we should have in the weeks ahead.

KERRY TEAMS: It’s been a busy few weeks for the various county teams who are involved in national league or developmental tournament action. The Kerry Ladies are the standout team right now and are on a serious roll with five wins secured from five games which has put them into the league final! Our club representatives Louise Galvin, Niamh Carmody, Caitríona Dillon and Patrice Diggins are doing a serious job in helping to drive this success! Another big win was secured last weekend by defeating league and All Ireland champions Meath by an impressive double scores!! Their last two league games are away to Cork and Galway - best of luck ladies.

The Kerry men have had a stop start league so far. A heavy defeat to Mayo was followed by a very narrow victory against Armagh last weekend. A tough test ahead this weekend with an away trip to Tyrone.

The Kerry U20 footballers were playing the John Kerins developmental tournament with two defeats. The club is proud to be represented by Kieran MacKessy in goals and we wish Kieran the very best of luck for the year ahead with Kerry. We have two players involved with the Kerry hurling senior team in Conor O’Keeffe and Shane Conway. They were very unlucky not to come away with league points last weekend against Offaly, who won the game in injury time with a pointed side line cut. They remain in the hunt for a promotional playoff.

However Spa rallied well and before half time struck for a goal to leave the minimum between the sides at half time, with Spa leading 1-05 to 0-07 points. Health & Safety Notice - Walkway & Grounds

No Dogs Allowed - (Except Guide Dogs) Due to health and safety reasons our GAA club is banning people from walking their dogs on the club’s walkway and grounds because of the continued fouling of the area. This is down to the noncompliance by a few owners to clean up their dog mess so the the decision was made in the interest of protecting the children who train and are involved in activities in the area.

The decision is regrettable but the club feels it is in the best interest of the club members and it is hoped for dog owners to co-operate.

Programme for 3rd March 2023: 6.45pm: Rosary and Confession 7pm: Mass, Sermon and Benediction

All are welcome.

Quote from St. Pio “My Past, O Lord To Your Mercy, My Present, To Your Love, My Future, To Your Providence.”

THE MIRACLE PRAYER

Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked many favours.

This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your own favour not mine. Amen.

Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never been known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. P.D.
