WRITERS’ WEEK STATEMENT

This is an agreed statement from the Committee of Writers’ Week 28th March 2023:

On Friday, 16 September 2022, the committee of Writers’ Week were unceremoniously ‘discontinued’ without explanation or due process by the board of Listowel Writers’ Week.

This followed the board’s interpretation of a recommendation in a 1,500-word report, costing €15,000 commissioned by Writers’ Week. The board stated that The Arts Council required the full implementation of the report, compiled by consultant Dermot McLaughlin, as a condition of ongoing funding. It is important to emphasise that all committee members engaged with Mr McLaughlin during the consultation process, outlining our concerns with the festival’s management by the current board and proposals to resolve these issues. The report does not in any way reflect our contributions, and therefore we consider it utterly flawed.

The report was presented to the board on 17 August 2022, a month before our dismissal. Yet, despite many requests, it took a full three months for the three-page report to be supplied to the committee – but not before segments were selectively leaked to the media. This resulted in severe reputational damage not just to the committee members but to the Listowel Writers’ Week brand and the town of Listowel itself.

We have endeavoured since September to meaningfully engage with the board on the implementation of this report, but to no avail.

Regardless, we persevered in our efforts to achieve a reconciliation with the board, but under chairperson Catherine Moylan, they have not actively engaged. Ms Moylan knows us all well, was elected by us and served as chair of our committee for four years prior to our disbandment.

We wanted to engage with the board on many aspects of the McLaughlin document. For example, many of us have promoted the appointment of a professional curator for several years. We believe a curator, leveraging the committee’s extensive corporate memory and social capital, could ensure the acknowledged magical essence of Listowel Writers’ Week. This would ensure that the festival would be enhanced and bequeathed to the community and the next generation of authors, volunteers and visitors.

In recent weeks, an independent third party scoped-out the possibility of facilitating a rapprochement between the committee and the board to maintain significant involvement from the Listowel community in Writers’ Week. However, once again, no meaningful progress was made.

It is with regret that we have to disengage from Listowel Writers’ Week under the current board of directors, resulting in no involvement by the community-based committee in Listowel Writers’ Week for 2023. While this is a heart-breaking decision for us, we wish the very best in 2023 for the festival we have nurtured over the decades.

We are extremely grateful for the support we have received locally and from the wider literary community.

We particularly appreciate Writers’ Week’s long-standing President Colm Tóibín, the current Arts Council appointed Laureate for Irish Fiction, who resigned in November due to our dismissal.

At the time, Mr Tóibín said: “Listowel Writers’ Week depended on a literary community in Listowel who read deeply and widely. This meant that the festival had genuine roots in the town. I see this as best practice, as a model for any other literary festival.”

We also thank those acclaimed authors who wrote a letter to the Irish Times, published on 22 November 2022, calling for our reinstatement, namely: Gabriel Byrne, Roddy Doyle, Kit de Waal, Carlo Gébler, Clare Keegan, Paul Lynch, Colm McCann, Niall MacMonagle, Doireann Ní Ghríofa, Edna O’Brien, Joseph O’Connor, Mary O’Malley, David Park, Donal Ryan, Christine Dwyer Hickey and Jimmy Murphy.

There are a number of issues we believe must be resolved; these include:

• The preservation and development of the community-based nature of Writers’ Week and how this can best be achieved.

• The reaffirmation of the rights of the members of the Company as provided for in the Memorandum and Articles of Association of Listowel Writers’ Week Company Limited. This is to facilitate an AGM of the members and the composition of the board of Writers Week Limited.

• A full discussion by the membership on the Report and its implications for Writers Week going forward.

Mar fhocal scoir tuigeann an coiste fírinne an seanfhocal ‘Is ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na ndaoine’. Táimid lán sásta go ndearnanar ár gcroí ndícheall.

It is our sincere hope that Listowel Writers Week will continue to thrive into the future.

CAROLINE’S DÓTERRA ESSENTIAL OILS

CAROLINE’S POD OF POSITIVITY

Welcome to my weekly column. My name is Caroline and as a certified DóTERRA essential oil specialist I have been delighted to help, guide and support so many people along with their friends and families on their essential oil journey throughout North Kerry and West Limerick over the last three years. I know how these Essential Oils can support the Body, the Mind and the Mood and each week I’ll be sharing lots of tips and information on Self-Care, Wellness, Love and Gratitude when using your DóTerras essential oils as part of your every day routine.

A natural solution to protect the Immunes System - This week we are discussing dóTerra’s On-Guard essential oil which is a powerful blend that supports a healthy immune function when taken internally in your food and drinks and also when diffused in your home, office, classroom, or work environment. On-Guard protects us against environmental and seasonal threats and can eliminate all bacteria and airborne threats from a room within 12 minutes when diffused in a cold-water diffuser. On-Guard is a natural antioxidant and contains Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon, Eucalyptus and Rosemary and it smells amazing!

It is great for oral hygiene and you can put one drop onto your toothbrush in the mornings. It also soothes cold sores and mouth ulcers when applied directly to the sore. OnGuard can be used as a sanitiser by adding a few drops to cooled boiled water and used to spray on to your hands or facemask if and when you are required to wear one.

A favourite in our house is to soak sliced apples in water with 2/3 drops of On Guard for a healthy immune boosting snack. On Guard arrives to you in a 15ml size bottle which contains 285 x drops. It can also be purchased as part of the very popular Family Essentials Kit which retails at €160 and also includes 9 other essential oils to support your health and wellbeing.

On Guard should be diffused at least 5 x times a week in your home, office, classroom, or work environment to support your immunity naturally.

You can check out my Facebook page Caroline’s Pod of Positivity or reach me on the number below for more information on getting and using your DóTERRA’S Essential Oils. To book a consultation or an oil experience appointment you can reach me on the number and together we will start you on your journey of health and wellness using the oils with my full support and guidance.

My Three Way Method Using DóTerras Oils: Topically: Apply the oils onto your skin particularly on the pulse points and soles of the feet. Aromatically: Place two to three drops into a cold-water diffuser and diffuse the oils in your home, classroom, office space, salons or other places of work and business. Internally: Add the oils to your favourite food, waters and drinks, or simply by taking one drop daily under the tongue to support your body and mind.

DóTERRA knows that essential oils must be pure and potent in order to best fulfill the needs of those that use them. Too often, essential oils available for purchase contain contaminants and filler substances that weaken the essential oil’s effectiveness. With the sole purpose to provide pure and potent essential oils, doTERRA ensures that their oils are free of harmful contaminants and fillers through the CPTG Certified Pure Tested Grade™ protocol. We are so fortunate that DōTerra now have a manufacturing plant in Blarney Business Park in County Cork and will become a household name in Ireland by the year end.

Though for the week ahead: ‘What you do today can improve all your tomorrows’

FUN THEATRE FOR LITTLE ONES IN LISTOWEL AT ST. JOHNS

Magical stories and memorable performances are all you need to make the Easter holidays more exciting Even the smallest members of the family enjoy the odd stage show and St John’s Theatre is delighted to bring two very special children’s shows over the holidays. RTE Junior brings the wonderful family show, Living with a Fairy and from the brilliant folk at Barking Dog Theatre, Dr Dolittle and his motley crew of animals make the trip to Listowel.

Jay Ryan, the creator and star of ‘Living with a Fairy’ brings the magical television show to the stage. Storyteller Jay, has his life turned upside down when a fairy comes to live with him. It turns out you never know where you might find fairies or what kind of mischief they might get up to. With a simple but magical setting and a multitude of instruments, the live show celebrates our tradition of storytelling and children’s imagination.

Hugh Lofting created the timeless character of Dr Dolittle while writing to his children from the trenches during the first world war. This wonderful adventure has been adapted to delight and charm young audiences and they’ll be laughing and singing from their seats. Dr Dolittle prefers animals to people. With the help of his parrot Polynesia, he learns to speak with all the animals and soon becomes a wonderful vet.He is summoned to help cure an outbreak of disease among the monkeys in Africa so he heads off with his trusty dog Jip and his monkey Chee Chee.

Shows are ideal for young children up to the age of 10 but can be enjoyed by anyone who loves the magic of stories and live music.

SAN RITA WELLNESS

Welcome to San Rita Wellness weekly column…We hope you are safe and well

Now that St Patrick’s weekend and Mother’s Day are over and we are at the end of another month It is time to look forward. April is a time of the year where we start to make plans for upcoming events where we want to look and feel great .We encourage our San Rita Wellness members to look at the calendar and plan for certain dates coming up to help to stay motivated on their weight loss and wellness journey.

This week we are going to focus on how important it is for you and your well being to keep yourself accountable to your commitment to feel and look better . There are many areas where accountability plays a big part in your weight loss and wellness journey.

So, let’s break them down and ask yourself are you actually ticking all the boxes.

Very often we can blame others for “making” us eat or drink something we actually hadn’t planned on having which can very often be the start of the slippery slope that we are all familiar with..Blaming others for our actions is an easy way of letting ourselves “ off the hook “ for our own accountability. Your choices are your decisions. Always remember when you point the finger at someone the rest of your fingers are pointing back at YOU.

Accountability is all about keeping records.

Calories

It is a proven fact when you keep an account of what you eat and drink you are more aware and mindful of your calorie intake. By keeping a track of your calories you are less likely to “forget” the little things that can all add up in the end. Keeping track in a notebook or journal can show you what kind of foods you eat, when you eat and it can also identify your trigger times. There are also some great free apps you can download on your phone to keep track of your daily calorie intake.

Goals

Setting yourself mini goals can help you progress on your weight loss and wellness journey. When setting yourself a mini goal keep it “Specific”, “Relevant” and “Time Bound“. Keeping a weekly record of your mini goals can help your motivation and commitment to stick with it and know that it will be worth it. Remember the saying: “Slow progress is better than No progress“.

Weight

Being accountable to somebody else with your weight other than yourself is very important as we do tend to leave ourselves off the hook quite easily at times. By doing this you are making a commitment not alone to yourself but to somebody else also. This is why the weekly check in with San Rita Wellness is so beneficial for our members. Being accountable to someone else gives you support also. You can lose weight for yourself but it doesn’t always have to be by yourself.

So pick up the phone and call us now. “It will be a weight off your mind.”

For extra support and for weekly accountability check us out on Facebook San Rita Wellness or sanritawellness.ie for details of our “In Person Meetings”, “At Home Service” or our “One to One Service”

NB - Our weekly “In Person Meetings “take place in The Kerry Writers Museum, The Square, Listowel every Wednesday and in The Ballybunion Health and Leisure Centre every Thursday.

TREASURY:

A selection of old stories, ways and wisdom from The Schools’

In this people’s history of Ireland, John Creedon introduces a fascinating collection of stories from the Schools’ Collection. This treasure trove of old stories, ways and wisdom, which could have been lost for ever, was collected by schoolchildren as part of a nationwide project set up in the 1930s to preserve Irish folklore.

Published here for the first time, this ‘best of’ selection includes chapters on ghost stories, agriculture, forgotten trades, schooling and pastimes. The result is an incredible arc of folk history that tells us about ourselves and how we lived long ago.

THE MIRACLE PRAYER

Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked many favours.

This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your own favour not mine. Amen.

Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never been known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. M.K.
