HOW TO BUILD A BOAT
By Elaine Feeney
Meet Jamie, a boy with a big imagination and an even bigger dream, in the most uplifting book of the year
Jamie O’Neill loves the colour red. He also loves tall trees, patterns, rain that comes with wind, the curvature of many objects, books with dust jackets, cats, rivers and Edgar Allan Poe. At age 13 there are two things he especially wants in life: to build a Perpetual Motion Machine, and to connect with his mother Noelle, who died when he was born. In his mind these things are intimately linked. And at his new school, where all else is disorientating and overwhelming, he finds two people who might just be able to help him.
How to Build a Boat is the story of how one boy and his mission transforms the lives of his teachers, Tess and Tadhg, and brings together a community. Written with tenderness and verve, it’s about love, family and connection, the power of imagination, and how our greatest adventures never happen alone.
‘A gorgeous gift of a novel, hopeful and full of humanity’

KILFLYNN
CROTTA ARE MUNSTER SCOR NA NOG CHAMPIONS
A packed hall at Eire Og G A A Pavilion, Ovens County Cork. was treated to the absolute best of talent on Saturday 15th April. Competitors from all 6 counties gave impressive displays and made things very difficult for the adjudicators on the day. But decisions were made and it is safe to say that we have an exemplary team of representatives for the province at the upcoming All Ireland final.
Michael Ryan was an outstanding Fear A Tí for the afternoon, keeping the show moving along nicely with some excellent insights along the way - you can’t beat the experience.
The Kingdom musicians were to the fore in the Instrumental Music competition with Crotta O Neills representing their Club, County and the North Kerry Hurling Board taking the win over Palasgrean, Diarmuid O Mathunas and Upperchurch /Drombane. This was a fantastic competition with next to nothing between all the groups. Playing “The Banks Of The Newfoundland” & “Andy Mccanns Reel” the Kerry champions will now represent their club, county and province in a few weeks’ time.
Huge congratulations and well done to this talented group of Conor Brennan, Thomas Breen, Sarah Murphy, Ellen Trant and Grace Hannon Linnane, their mighty music mentor Aoife Murphy and fantastic Club Scor office Tom Breen who guided Crotta to its first Munster Scor title.
We would like to thank Aoife and Tom, the parents and everyone that has supported them on their journey to get here and we want to wish them the very best of luck in the National Final in the INEC in Killarney on May 6th.

CHANGE IN MASS SCHEDULE
At a recent meeting of the Area Pastoral Council (with representatives from Listowel, Moyvane, Knockanure, Lixnaw, Iremore, Rathea, Duagh, Lyrecrompane) the provision of Mass for the 8 communities of the region was reviewed. After exploration of possibilities, given the decline in the number of priests (4 at the moment), it was proposed that, among other adjustments, Moyvane-Knockanure would continue to have its vigil Mass on Saturday evenings at 7.30 and morning Mass at 9.30 in Knockanure. Moyvane Sunday 11.00am Mass may be dropped so that the resident priest (for now) in Moyvane could provide Mass elsewhere in the area at that time. Before this arrangement is confirmed, your comments are welcome, preferably in writing, to Fr. Brendan before May 1st. They will be respected and included in any ultimate outcome.

CLEAN UP
The County Clean Up Day was a great success. Over the weekend some 50 bags of litter were collected around the parish and left at the Fire Station for
collection by KWD. This initiative promoted locally by Tarbert Development Association was carried out by many volunteers who walked the highways and byways to remove this unsightly litter. One can see the difference clean streets and roadsides make, a welcome sight for locals and visitors alike. We must also realise that litter is not just a one weekend problem. It is up to all of us to be vigilant and be conscious of promoting a clean, safe and healthy environment for all to enjoy all year round. It should also be our legacy for future generations. Ní neart go chur le chéile.

The Rambling House continues as usual on the last Saturday of the month, 29 April. The best of traditional music, song and story from North Kerry and West Limerick will be available at Tarbert Community Centre from 8 pm with a welcome cupán tae ar fáil ina diaidh agus fáilte roimh gach einne. Bigi ann chun sult agus spraoi a baint as an oiche.
ISLAND ROAD
Walking the Tarbert Island road on the couple of lovely fine days we were blessed with last week it was a cause of concern to see the number of breaches in the old stone wall caused by proximity of tree roots in the wood just inside the walls. This has been a cause of concern for a long time and is now getting worse. There must surely be some government or heritage grant available to repair and restore these damaged walls along such a beautiful amenity walk enjoyed by everybody. The lovely daffodils which we enjoyed so much have now faded and gone reminding us of Robert Herrick’s lovely poem we learned going to school-’ Fair daffodils, we weep to see you haste away so soon, As yet the early rising sun has not attained his Noon, Stay, stay until the hasting day has run But to the evensong And, having prayed together, we will go with you along.’

LISTOWEL ATHLETIC CLUB
Training is ongoing for all age groups with the county athletic finals just around the corner on 1st May. In preparation, many of the athletes went to sun-baked Ennis last weekend for their open sports. Too many trophies to mention but they all preformed well and had great fun. Lots of PB’s and great experience before counties.
This coming weekend six club athletes will be honoured for their athletic achievements over the past 2 years at the County Awards night in the Listowel Arms Hotel. Club Awards goes to Noelle Dillion and Aoibhinn Harte. County Awards will be presented to Megan Lynch and Padraic McCarthy. International Awards will be presented to Kevin Lynch and Donal Leahy.
This week we have a quick look at the female award winners. Noelle Dillon is a long distance, cross country runner who has excelled over the past 12 months winning her first County Cross Country in 2012 and 12th in Munster. Noelle won Bronze at the North Munster Schools in 2022 and Gold in the County 3km Junior women. Noelle even competed in the 4x100m county relay winning Gold. Noelle cross country success continued in 2022 with a 6th place finish at Munster level. Overall Noelle, is making progress year on year and continues to work hard.
Aoibhinn Harte is a member of our throws group who has many success over the past year. Aoibhinn is very committed and dedicated to her sport and great to see the fruits of her hard work coming to fruition. Aoibhinn had many success at County level across all throws events but she did extremely well at Munster level including Munster Indoors and Outdoor Shot Putt Bronze medal.
Munster Juniors: Double Gold in the Shot and WFD. Kerry Colleges: Silver in Shot at Seniors level. North Munster schools: Intermediate Gold in discus and Bronze in the Shot. National level finished in top 8 shot putt and 4th Junior WFD at Nationals. We done Aoibhinn and keep building on your success for 2023.
Megan specialises in the 100m and 200m and has being consistently present in Athletics for the past 10 years when she was part of the Lios Tuathail AC U10 relay that won Bronze in the National 4x100m relay. Megan breakthrough year came in 2022, when she won her first individual national medal in the 60m indoors. The 2022 outdoor season continued with greater success with her first National championship Gold medal at the U19 100m and backed up with a silver in the 200m. That was a magical weekend. Megan is the lead leg on the club relay team that also had great success in 2022 with a CBP in the Munster U23 Outdoors and a National Senior 4x100m relay Silver medallist. Overall, Megan achieved 4 National medals and 6 Munster medals in 2022. Megan is a

U13 County League Result:
Beale Tarbert 1-07, Dromid Waterville 0-09. Beale Tarbert made it three wins from three in Division 7 with an enthralling win over a very good Dromid Waterville side on Sunday evening 16th April in Ballybunion. Beale Tarbert had to dig deep as they found themselves 2 points behind with 10 minutes remaining. Great resilience from the boys saw them kick three points in the closing stages to win by the slinderest of margins. This was another excellent team performance by all the players who took to the field. This result puts Beale Tarbert top of the table with one game left to play. Tarbert players who played were Ryan Collins in goals, Jamie Buckley and Oisin Holme in the backs, Danny Finucane at midfield and Sean O Connell, Odhran Finucane and Gavin Denihan in the forwards.
Huge thanks to all the supporters who cheered on the boys this evening. Also wishing Jack Blake and Jack O Gorman a speedy recovery.

TARBERT 2-6 KILCUMMIN 1-7 (full report on page 25)
Tarbert produced an inspirational comeback to see off the challenge of Kilcummin in an exciting County MFL (Division 2) Final at Brosna on Monday evening 10th April. Six points behind approaching half-time in this decider, Joe Coolahan and Paddy Moriartys boys dug deep to eventually prevail.
Well done to the management team of Paddy Moriarty and Joe Coolahan, who have guided this marvellous group of players all the way through the age grades.
In what was, unquestionably, a wonderful team effort, Aaron White’s two big saves, and the kick-outs he rained down on Paudie Finucane in the second half, were vital factors in the eventual victory.

KERRY PITCH & PUTT
As the 2023 Pitch & Putt season gets underway in earnest this weekend, it starts exactly how it finished in 2022, with the Adult County Matchplay Championships in Tralee this Sunday April 23rd. Pitch & Putt Ireland have altered their calendar for this year meaning Matchplay and Strokeplay Champions will now go in sequence date wise from county onto provincial and then national. Unfortunately due to the recent spell of wet weather Newmarket have had to pull out as hosts of this event as the County Board are grateful for Tralee stepping up to take the event following the effect the weather has had on all our courses in recent weeks. Full details relating to all draws will be posted on the Facebook page and emailed to clubs in advance of the weekend. Damien Fleming is seeking a third consecutive Senior Mens title only six months after he defeated Tralee’s Jason Cregan in the final on the October Bank Holiday Weekend. Tralee hosts the only major provincial fixture in the county this year as they will host the Munster Matchplay finals on the weekend of May 21st next. Qualifying for this will take place on Sunday May 7th as the venue for same will be confirmed by the County Board in due course. We are celebrating 50 years of County Board Pitch & Putt this year in the county with Deerpark’s foundation in 1973 officially creating the first Kerry Pitch & Putt Board under national auspices. Castleisland had been operating since the 1960’s before the other Kerry clubs were formed.
After their great year in 2022 Listowel will be hosting their delayed 50th anniversary celebrations in May as the county hopes to feature strongly on the provincial and national stages again. At a County Board meeting last month, James Fleming of Deerpark was appointed as Senior Mens Inter-County team manager while John Fitzgerald (Tralee) and Christy O’Mahony (Listowel) remain on as Intermediate and Junior team managers respectively.
The trials for the Intermediate and Junior Mens teams this year will be based on the Bob Casey Inter-Club Strokeplay rounds with performances on the night converted into points for players afterwards. The Bob Casey itself gets underway on May 16th in Deerpark while the Tim Scannell Memorial Inter-Club Matchplay begins on Tuesday June 20th in Listowel.

THE MIRACLE PRAYER
Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked many favours.
This time I ask you this special one, (mention favour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your own favour not mine. Amen.
Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never been known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. J.Mc

MEANING OF LIFE
“Gerard ‘The Monk’ Hutch walks free from court after not guilty verdict in the Regency Hotel murder trial. Mr. Hutch walked from court a free man.”
That news got front page coverage in every newspaper this week and no doubt will be the topic of debate across the land for a while. What a wonderful word “Freedom”, But what is the nature of real freedom? It got me thinking.
Since l became a bible believing Christian l am coming to understand what real freedom is. The Gospel of John chapter 8 verse 36 tells me “..So if the Son(that’s Jesus) sets you free you will be free indeed.”
Ephesians 3:12 says “In Him(that’s Jesus) and through faith in Him we may approach God with freedom and with confidence. “
Again in Galatians 5:1 we read “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. “
So, what is this real, true freedom that comes only from Jesus?
Christ’s death on the cross has freed us to become the people our Creator designed us to be. He intends for us to be vessels of His love, peace and joy.

PRAYER TO THE SLEEPING ST. JOSEPH
O Saint Joseph. you are a man greatly favoured by the Most High. The angel of the Lord appeared to you in dreams, while you slept, to warn you and guide you as you cared for the Holy Family. You were both silent and strong, a loyal and courageous protector.
Dear Saint Joseph, as you rest in the Lord, confident of His absolute power and goodness, look upon me. Please take my need… (mention your request here) … into your heart, dream of it, and present it to your Son. Help me then, good Saint Joseph, to hear the voice of God, to arise, and act with love. I praise and thank God with joy.
Saint Joseph, I love you. Amen.
Grateful thanks for many requests granted. E.M.
It cost Him His life to obtain this magnificent freedom for us.
The penalty we all deserve has been removed and now we have eternal life.
Because of what Jesus has done we can each walk free, completely free, with no fear of being caught at a future date. All our sin, past, present, and future has been completely forgiven and we escape the punishment that was our due. But we must individually accept this gift of salvation because of what Jesus has accomplished for us on the cross by His sacrificial death. This is the truth. And when we know and believe this it is true freedom. Scripture tells me this in John 8:32 “And you will know the truth and the truth will set you free. “
I know this truth. I believe it and l am forever grateful to be a child of the One, True and Living God who went to such extremes to gain my love and your love and to give us full access to His love, forgiveness, and new life. I would be a fool to ignore His gift of freedom.
