KAY MCDONNELL MAKES LEAP OF FAITH FOR KERRY CANCER

There was a full house in St. John’s on Friday 19th August for Clann Uí Fhlatharta from Connemara who enthralled the audience with their harmonised arrangements of sean-nós songs and traditional dance tunes on fiddle, flute, banjo, harp, bodhrán guitar and whistles. It was the first time ever for the multitalented siblings to appear live in concert as a family. People travelled from as far away as Connemara, Sligo and Co. Meath for the concert. They played a wonderful medley of songs and tunes on the night which had the audience cheering for more and more. “Mesmerising musicianship” as described by one punter. “Ceolchoirm den scoth.. Fanfaidh cuimhne an choirmhcheoil bhinn go ceann i bhfad i mo chroí. Oíche den scoth”, by another punter.... “Clann Uí Fhlatharta made a huge impression on the audience at St. John’s on Friday night. Their strong connection with their language and heritage, and their understanding of the Connemara tradition they are deeply rooted in came across very strongly in the performance. We were very privilaged to have them on stage in Listowel in what was a very special event for them as a family, and we were thrilled to have their parents Mary & Dara present on the night also. People are already asking when they’ll be back again. We’d love to welcome them back to the Kingdom again!” (Áine Ní Chuaig, member of staff at St. John’s Theatre)

THE LISTOWEL ACTIVE RETIRED GROUP RETURNS

An incredible €30000 has been raised so far for the charity from the abseil event in Croke Park, which will go towards a new transport bus to continue transporting cancer clients to appointments. People can still donate and if you would like to help Kay you can click on the following link: https://www.gofundme.com/f/take-of-faith-22-challenge-kerry-cancer. Kay would like to sincerely thank anyone who has donated to such a worth cause.

Listowel woman Kay McDonnell completed the duanting abseil of 100ft from the iconic Hogan Stand in Croke Park on August 21st to raise funds for Kerry Cancer Support Trust CLG. Along with Sue Taylor, Kay bravely took on this leap of faith and was delighted to have conquered the feat. Kay described the experience as “amazing and terrifying all rolled into one”.

The Listowel Active Retired Group will return from their summer break on Tuesday the 06th of September. We welcome back all our mem bers, new and old, and refreshed.

Thought for the week: “Your mind is a garden, your thoughts are the seeds, You can grow flowers,or you can grow weeds.”

Stress

Regular exercise and physical activity promotes strong mus cles and bones. It improves respiratory, cardiovascular health, and overall health. Staying active can also help you maintain a healthy weight. Getting out in the daylight and being active for at least 30 minutes a day ,5 times a week is beneficial to our overall wellbeing. Being active also releases endorphins which makes us feel happy.

Reducing stress is also key. Think about ways to calm yourself after a stressful day. A long soak in the bath with candles lighting is therapeutic and relaxing. Picking up the phone and chatting to someone can also help after all “a problem shared is a problem halved“.

Self love Treat yourself with respect and kindness as you would with your best friend, after all you can be your own best friend or your own worst enemy. There is a saying that we like to use which is “ What you think determines how you feel, and how you feel determines what you do”

As we are now going into a new season now is the time to set the seed in your mind how you can improve your overall lifestyle and well being in various ways.

DIARIES

Here are some tips to help get you started with self care… Foods

1918 - 1922 By William Murphy (Editor), Anne Dolan (Contributor) Collins’s diaries are not the diaries many peo ple might be expecting. Published here for the very first time, they are pocket appoint ment bookscum- to-do lists, the working diaries of someone in the midst of the extraordinary times he was central to, but also the diaries of an everyday life, with dental appointments to endure and football matches to enjoy. In short accessible illustrated chapters the life of one of the great leaders of Ireland is revealed. Michael Collins (1890–1922), was born in Co. Cork, he was a staff captain in the GPO in 1916, and emerged as a leading figure during his internment in Frongoch camp. As the Director of Organisation with the Irish Volunteers, he mas terminded their campaign in the Anglo-Irish war (1919-21). Having signed the Anglo-Irish Treaty, in 1922 he became chairman of the Provisional Government and commander-in-chief of the National Army. He was killed in an ambush in Co. Cork on 22 August 1922.

Sleep Make sure to get at least 6 to 8 hours sleep at night, as sleep has a huge impact on how we feel both emotionally and physically. Setting a going to bed time is equally as important as setting a wake up time. Also avoid being on devices before bedtime ie. phone/laptop in order to be able to unwind and relax and get a good nights sleep.

RECOVERY HAVEN

It has been a very sad weekend in the community with the unfortunate news coming through on Thursday afternoon last August 18th of the passing of Patrick O’Connor R.I.P. of Ballyline. Paddy as he was most af fectionately known was a quiet, unassuming and kind gentleman to the highest degree, who had a good word for everyone and spoke to both young and old. Born on 30th November 1937 to parents John and Mary he was brother to Jose (Flavin) and Tom (New York). He was a very successful member of the farming community lo cally taking over the family farm on the passing of his parents and working hard in making a success of his farm business. His interests outside of farming were immense and he could speak at ease about the hap penings of year’s gone by and trace relations and family relatives at ease. He was very much up to date with all the happenings on the National and International scene and could relate and speak very easily on such matters. Born and reared on the family farm, he had a wide and varied interest in all outdoor activities, from gardening in which he always had a garden that was the envy of many people, to going to the bog, or the mart he always loved the company of others and socially that was also the case as he liked to visit the village after his days work for a sociable drink and to meet with friends and others to chat about the happenings of that particular day or week. He was a wonderful neighbour always ready to help with any deed if needed and likewise his neigh bours were there if he required help forming a wonder ful neighbourly spirit which was very evident with the large numbers that turned out to pay their respects to this wonderful and kind gentleman over the weekend. To his brother Tom in New York, nephews Denis, John Joe & Barth Flavin and their wives Geraldine, Esther & Sinead, nieces Rosemary, Joanne & Eileen O’ Connor (New York) and their partners. grandnephews, grand nieces, great-grandnephew, great-grandniece, rela tives, neighbours and his wide circle of friends we ex tend our very deepest sympathies. Paddy is predeceased by his parents John & Mary, his sister Josephine (Jose) Flavin, brother-in-law Batt Flavin, sister-in-law Mary O’ Connor (New York). Paddy’s body Reposed at Lynch’s Funeral Home on Sunday, 21st of August last, with his cortege arriving at St. Michael the Archangel Church, Ballylongford on Monday morning for 11am Requiem Mass followed by interment afterwards in Lislaughtin Abbey. The weekend was also marked with further sad news on the hearing of the passing of another one of Ballylongford’s famous son’s the late John Flavin R.I.P. in England and formerly of Rusheen, Ballylongford. Indeed, we fondly remember John Flavin as the won derful and unassuming gentleman everybody knew and who never forgot his roots and always found time in seeking out and meeting with his numerous friends, schoolmates and neighbours on all of his trips home to Bally. Johnny as he was more affectionately known to his friends was born on 7th August 1944 to parents Michael (Mick) and Catherine (Kate) he was the sixth of seven children and was a brother to Mick, John Joe, Smiler, Mag, Chris and Ted. He began his childhood years by attending the local National School and played an ac tive part in community life from a young age, from his great love of football to hitting the stage with the local drama groups, which all paved the way to a successful career in later years. During his early years, he worked and studied hard and found time to be strongly noticed as an up and coming footballer. He played for Bally from his early years and was on the Kerry Vocational Team of 1960 in which he won his first All Ireland medal when they defeated Carlow that year in Tipperary. However, as he often said himself it was in the local Parish League that he learned the highs and lows of the game, from the hard knocks to the wonderful friendships made both on and off the field. In 1962, Johnny was told by the then County Minor selector the late Johnny Walsh of Main Street who had coached and taught him both at school and on the field to be ready for a call up for a trial for the Kerry Minor team. It was from here he excelled and his All-Ireland minor success came in that year when he lined out for Kerry as a corner forward against Mayo. A few weeks earlier, in the semi-final against Of faly, he made sporting and television history by becom ing the first GAA player to score a point on live television. But shortly after he went to England on a holiday and liked it there, he immediately began work there and his life now began to take him in a different direction as he went on to represent the workers of England and Ireland as a leading Trade Union official with UCATT. He kept his sports interests alive in various sports and he boxed for Middle Row boxing club in London, ran for the London Irish Athletic Club and wrestled alongside Killarney world champion Joe Kelleher with Foresters Wrestling club in London. John Flavin became the Kerry Person of the Year by the Kerry Association in London in October of 2009 at the age of 65 on that night also John was delighted as Colm the Gooch Cooper attended with the Sam Maguire Cup in which he and Gooch were pictured holding the famous Sam Maguire Cup. On Saturday March 4th March 2017, John made a very proud return home to Bally for a very special occasion and that was the launching of ‘To Fight is to Win’, his autobiography describing his life-long personal struggle, fighting for the rights of the working class in Ireland and the UK. A huge crowd of friends, neighbours and people from all over were present in the Parish Hall to honour a great Bally man. May heaven now be his rightful home. To his wife Maureen, daughter Anita, son Mark, grandchildren and all of his family relatives and friends both here and in the U.K. we offer our deepest sympathies. May his gentle soul Rest In Peace.

COISTE NA NÓG U12: Our U12 hurlers had a brilliant day out in Croke Park on Thursday. Our young men gave 3 outstand ing displays in their matches, winning all their matches with each player playing out of their skin. Not only did they get to play on the pitch that they have watched their heroes play on all summer, they also got to sit in the changing rooms, visit the play er’s lounge and make priceless memories with their friends. Memories they will have for life. Hopefully this wasn’t the last time any of them will play on the hallowed turf of Croke Park. Thanks to the organis ers for a fabulous day, to the parents for their help and support and to the coaches who have worked so hard with the boys all year.

U15: Our U15 hurlers took on Parnells on Sunday in the Lee Strand Coiste na nÓg Division 1 Final. After narrowly losing out to Parnells in the Féile final the boys were ready for action and looking forward to the rematch. All spectators were treated to a thrill ing game of hurling with the narrowest of margins separating the sides at times. Parnells started the stronger team and with twenty minutes gone led 0-8 to 0-3, however Ballyduff were awarded a pen alty which John Curtin duly put in the back of the net, from there they gathered momentum and both teams were level at half time. An early goal and a point for us in the second half gave us an early lead, but Parnells kept plugging away and were rewarded with a goal in the 49th minute to level the sides once more. With five minutes to go we took the lead once more with a point, only for Parnells to claim victory with a last-minute goal. Final score Parnells 2 – 11 Ballyduff 2 – 9. Hard luck to the players and management.

ACTIVE RETIRED

North Kerry and Mid Kerry will have to do it all again next Monday after the county minor football championship final failed to separate them af ter 90 minutes of action before a large vocal crowd at Austin Stack Park on Monday evening 22nd August.

Oisin Healy was the hero of the piece as far as North Kerry were con cerned, with the Asdee man converting equalising frees at the end of the regulation 60 minutes and again at the end of extra-time to force a sec ond day out. Indeed, Healy’s first leveller came six minutes into additional time at the end of the first hour, which proved the very last kick that saw the teams all square at 1-10 apiece. Well done to the North Kerry team and their management especially Crotta Gaa St. Senan’s player, Sean McElligott (Centerfield). Best of luck to Sean and his North Kerry team mates in the replay on Monday evening 29th August at 7pm in Austin Stack’s Park, Tralee.

The Knockanure Rambling house takes place on Thursday 1 September, the first Thursday, from 8.30pm to 11.30pm. On a sunny Saturday afternoon of 13 August there was a guided tour of the two medieval churches of Kilnaughtin and Lislaughtin led by historians Dr Declan Downey and Pádraig O’Concubhair each bringing a wealth of historical information and architectural detail to these termon churches of local chieftain John O’Connor Kerry before being ravaged and attacked by the forces of Elizabeth 1 during the second Desmond Rebellion and later by Cromwellian forces. Thankfully the Lislaughtin Processional Cross survived and is now a rare and exceptional relic in the National Museum. According to legend, the roof of Kilnaughtin and its bells are said to have been used in the building of the Church of Ireland on the Steeple road.

On the 15th. August 1893, 17 young people, 10 men and 7 women from the parish of Tarbert lost their lives in what was to become known as the Shannon boating tragedy or locally over the generations as the Drowning. After first Mass in Tarbert on that fine sunny morning of Tuesday the Feast of the Assumption and a Church Holyday, the excur sion party looking forward to a day in West Clare, gathered at the water’s edge at Mullally’s berth in Coolnanoonagh waiting for two boats to carry them across the Shannon to Clare. There was no sign of Mullally or his boat and the 17 excursionists all crowded into Maurice Murphy’s boat. With some difficulty they crossed safely to Moyne Quay and spent the day in Kilrush and Kilkee. Despite advice to the contrary the party of 17 gathered at Moyne at 7.30pm that evening preparing to return to Tarbert. With a strong ebb tide running they managed to cross the Tarbert Race and were about 100 yards from shore when the boat overturned causing all 17 passengers on board to be drowned. By the end of September 1893, a total of 12 bodies were recovered and buried in family graves. 5 bodies were never recovered, the river Shannon was their grave. Inquests held in Carrigaholt and Tarbert found ‘that the boat was overcrowded and in an unseaworthy condition’.

WINDOW ON THE PAST

While the crowd was small at the concert in St Mary’s Church, Tarbert this did not detract from a very enjoyable and varied item concert held on Sunday 14 August. Aine Enright, Doonard entertained the audience with a selection of Irish airs on the Harp. Aine was followed by a young group from the Ballydonoghue/Lisselton CCE, three ladies and a young man playing accordeon, concert flute, concertina and banjo with a rousing selection of reels and slides and a bit of sean nós dancing. The five Yershova sisters from Ukraine held us spell bound as the classically trained violin ists, now in exile in North Kerry, brought an international flavour to the performance. Tarbert’s David O’Gorman, aka Kerry Dave, rendered a number of Joe Dolan favourites to round off a very enjoyable night. Paddy Creedon was a very capable MC . Due to illness, lead artist Grace Foley was not available and we wish her well in her recuperation.

ECOLOGY As part of the Community weekend, marine Ecologist Padraic Creedon led a walk from the Bridewell on a glorious Sunday afternoon 14 August along the island road to the John F. Leslie Woodland trail to discuss the varied flora and fauna of this wonderful resource on our own doorstep and which we often take for granted.

Finuge players on this team are Gavin O’Keeffe, Ivan Conway, Mark McElligott and Gearóid O’Sullivan.

Elsewhere last Saturday in Deerpark, Tralee’s Sophie Moynihan was second once more in a National U16 Girls competition as her score of 125 was good enough for the silver medal behind defending champion Sarah Cooney of Seapoint who had beaten Sophie in the National Girls Matchplay Final in Newbridge last month. Well done to Deerpark on a great presentation of their course last weekend as their U16 Scratch Cup event on Friday (sponsored by the Victoria Killarney) was won by Brian McCarthy after a four hole playoff with Noah Sexton with A Jay Barrett having come third in that event and Erin Moloney of Deerpark claiming the U20 prize.

U13: On Sunday evening gone by, our boys played out the North Kerry Division one league final against Northern Gaels, and what a night it turned out to be! Both teams got moving early - it was a case of points for the opposition and goals for our lads. As the half wore on our lads were beginning to assert themselves and at half time the score stood at Finuge 3-05 and Northern Gaels 0-06. The second half saw our boys step it up another gear and were mov ing really well throughout. Direct running yielded a number of points and added to the goal tally and at the final whistle our boys were well in front on the scoreline Finuge 5-12 with NG 1-09! This was a deserving title for our lads as they have played really well all year. Cody Walsh lifted the trophy and the celebrations began in earnest! Then it was back to the clubrooms for some much-needed refreshments for everyone on a night that will live long in the memory of our young footballers! Congratulations to team and management - your hard work has paid off! A big thank you to the Gibbons family at Lixnaw Filling Station who generously sponsored tops for the team ahead of the final.

Brian was third overall in the Boys section just missing out on countback from Tipperary’s Adam O’Brien for second. Elsewhere the Kerry ‘Green’ team of Ben Kelliher, Jayden Chute, Daniel Leahy and Dylan Sweeney finished third in the competition only two shots off the silver medal score posted by the Tipperary 1 side. Great credit must go to Kerry U16 Officer Gearoid Cronin for his work with both teams this summer that yielded first and third at both national and provincial level. The team were also kindly sponsored by Sewells Pharmacy in Killarney again this year.

The team of Brian McCarthy, AJay Barrett, Nathan Cronin and Noah Sexton were convincing 22 shot winners of the National title in what was Kerry’s seventh success overall in the competition but the very first to take place at a Kerry course. Listowel’s A Jay Barrett was the star of the win as a five under par round in his 36 holes singles was very beneficial for both himself and his AJaycounty.became Kerry’s fifth and his club Listowel’s first ever winner of the Na tional Boys U16 Strokeplay with an overall total giving him a massive 10-shot winning margin over the field. A Jay had started on three under before leaving the field in his wake as he also shot a strong six under par Scotch Foursomes round alongside Brian McCarthy as Nathan Cronin and Noah Sexton were the other members of the winning Kerry side. Brian as captain followed his father Derry in winning the competition as Derry was a member of Kerry’s first ever National Inter-County winning side back in 1986.

“I have done wrong in my life. And l am sorry. But how do I know l’m forgiven? I always feel so guilty “ We were chatting about our childhood days and confession. I think we used to go once a month. And we agreed that we often made up sins just to add volume to the confession!! Then afterwards you’d feel so guilty about making up sins because that meant you had made a bad confession. So that sin would be head of the list for the next confession. We were so innocent! My friend’s words got me thinking though. How do l know l am forgiven? First of all, we are all sinners. Romans 3:23 clearly tells us “all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God“ l find this such a comforting Butscripture.doesGod want me to live my life condemning myself daily for the wrongs I’ve done? Absolutely not! In His beautiful Word God gives us the very best instruction on how to deal with our sins. First of all Proverbs 28:13 says “He who conceals his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them will find mercy.“ Jesus wilfully sacrificed His life for us. He died, was buried, and was resurrected for our sin. He took our guilt away. When we insist on hanging onto guilt and shame, it keeps us from receiving God’s love. We are saying that He died in vain. But scripture tells us otherwise. 1 John 1:9 reads “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. “

Mother of Devine Grace, You can find a way where there is no way, please hear my prayer and grant my request. Amen. Say 6 times a day for 3 days.

We all struggle with guilt but scriptures like these are so vital because they make it so clear that God forgives us and wants us to be free of guilt and Colossiansshame.

1:13-14 is crystal clear. “He has deliv ered us from the power of darkness and con veyed us into the Kingdom of the Son of His love, whom we have redemption through His blood- the forgiveness of sins.”

M.K.PRECIOUS MOTHER OF JESUS

THE PRAYERMIRACLE Dear Heart of Jesus in the past I have asked many favours. This time I ask you this special one, (mention fa vour). Take it dear heart of Jesus and place it within your heart where your father sees it. Then in his merciful eyes it will become your own favour not mine. Amen. Say this prayer three times for three days and your favour will be granted. Never been known to fail. Must promise publication of prayer. C.D.

There are none that can withstand your power. Oh, Mary, conceived without sin, pray for us who have recourse to thee (3 times). Sweet Mother, I place this cause in your hands (3 times). Amen This prayer is never known to fail. It is to be said for 3 consecutive days. Publication on granting of the favour must be promised and done. M.M.

OUR LADY OF MOUNT CARMEL

Yours Bridiesincerely,(Dillon)Hartney OF LIFE

I’m forever grateful to God. What an incredible gift the forgiveness of sin is.....not a piece.....not a little....not a selection...but the entirety of our sins, past ,present and future completely wiped away. Psalm 103:12 says it best...”as far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our sins.” I would be a fool if I didn’t avail of this amazing Iflove.you require any further information, you can call LCF at 087 9529907. Have a wonderful week living in the freedom that has been given to us.

Oh, most beauti ful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven. Blessed Mother of the Son of God; Im maculate Virgin, assist me in my necessity. Oh, Star of the Sea, help me and show me you are my Mother. Oh, Holy Mary, Mother of God, Queen of Heaven and Earth, I humbly beseech you from the bottom of my heart to succour me in my necessity (Mention your request here)

God is our loving Father who is always waiting to forgive us. Micah 7:18-19 puts it like this “Who is a God like You, pardoning sin? .....He does not retain His anger forever because He delights in mercy......You will cast all our sins into the depths of the sea.” Only God can forgive sin because Jesus has paid the price in full. It’s so important to believe that our sin is fully forgiven. God says it is. In Isaiah 1:18 He says “Come now and let us reason to gether. Though your sins be scarlet, they shall be as white as snow, though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.”
