Dharma alone accompanies you In our lives, we may consider many as our friends and relatives. We undergo many hardships for their sake. We distribute what we have earned amongst them. However we must reflect upon the extent to which they can support us. In this context, Sri Adi Shankaracharya has said:
³eeJeefÜÊeesHeepe&vemeÊeÀ: leeJeefvvepeHeefjJeejes jÊeÀ:~ He½eeppeerJeefle pepe&josns Jeelee¥ keÀesçefHe ve He=®íefle iesns~~ As long as you have the strength to earn, your so-called friends and relatives will be around. Once you stop earning, people will begin to stay away. Why speak of others, when even your own son would feel: “How long will this old man stay alive?”. Such is the state of affairs in this world today. Hence it is only the Dharma that you have performed that will really help you. The Shastras state -

Are your relatives and friends going to be with you? They merely offer the body either to Agni or to Bhumi and walk away without turning back. So who accompanies you? Only the Dharma will accompany you on your journey into the next life. If you do not show Shraddha towards Dharma now, you will repent later. Do not get into a situation where you regret not having adhered to Dharma in the past. Follow Dharma now, when you have good health and a strong body. May everyone thus realize the importance of Dharma and be Dharmikas.

Predicting Profession According to
Jaimini Astrology S. K. KAR, B.Sc
T
HE determination of profession is the most important task for an astrologer during the analysis of a horoscope. The readers are acquainted with it, and the general impression is that the tenth house has much to do with the profession of the native. In this article we shall discuss it from quite a different angle according to the great sage Jaimini whose system of analysing a horoscope departs altogether from that of general astrology. Before entering into any details ot the Jaiminian method it is necessary to remind the readers about some fundamental principles of Jaimini astrology. The Aspects The aspects in this system of astrology are strictly according to the signs, and the simple rule is that a particular sign aspects the sign in front of it and also the signs at equal angles to the right and left hand sides Thus, Aries aspects at front gaze Scorpio, and at angular gazes—Leo on the left and Aquarius on the right. Again, Taurus aspects Libra at the front and Cancer and Capricorn at angles. A sign at a corner aspects the signs at the remaining three corners. Thus, Pisces aspects Virgo in the front and also Gemini and Sagittarius at angles. The rules of aspects will be clear to the reader if he carefully examines a Rasi chart, and no committing to memory is necessary. The Argalas ani the Anti-Argalas
A sign will be under the good effects of an Argala when there is no opposition (anti-argala) to it. The The astrological emagazine
rules of argala and its opposition are as follows : (a) When a sign is aspected by any planet and there are planets in the 2nd, 4th or 11th places of the aspecting planet, than the aspected sign is under the benefic argalas of the planets in the said 2nd, 4th or 11th of the aspector.
There will be oppositions to the above argalas if there be planets in the 12th, 10th or 3rd respectively.
(b) If there be any planet in the 3rd of the aspecting planet, then also there will be an argala which has no opposition. (c) Rahu and Ketu will also be the makers of argalas in the above places. (d) A planet in the 5th of the aspector is an argala to the aspected sign, and the opposition to it is a planet in the 9th of the aspector. (e) If Rahu or Ketu be in the 9th of the aspector, they will be the argalas opposed by a planet in the 5th. Planets in the 6th, 7th or 8th of the aspector will not cause an argala. According to Maharshi Jaimini the atmakaraka, who is the most advanced planet in a sign, is the most powerful planet representing the self of the native. He is powerful enough to elevate the native from the lowest possible position to the highest pitch of dignity and honour. Therefore, the atmakaraka, specially, in the navamsa chart plays a very important part in determining the avocation most suitable for the native. April 2015

Forgotten Art of
Prediction H. R. Shankar, b.a.
P
REDICTION is essentially a matter of revealing Divine Will. Its purpose is to give you an understanding of yonr place in the universe. It kindles an awareness of the kind of energies that are flowing through you and through the physical universe so that you can channellise your energies to flow in harmony. By revealing the shape of things to come, an astrological prediction briefs you on the kind of opportunities open to you and the constraints imposed and also the kind of obstacles you will have to overcome. Instead, what we have in actual practice is fortune-telling—a form of fear-ridden prediction permeating fatalistic philosophy. Myths are created that astrology is the ultimate answer to human problems from curing cancer to warding off misfortunes to spotting winning horses. Predictions about oncoming calamities and misfortunes are made with the finality of death sentences, and these instil fear and anxiety in the minds of the clients, who would then become natural prey for exploitation through prescription of gems, kavachas and shantis (poojas) which are supposed to avert the oncoming mishap. We must combat this tendency of fatalistic philosophy of fear-ridden fortune-telling tradition that is deliberately cultivated by those interested in exploitation. Saturn and Mars are certainly not the awesome devils they are made out to be (by the fortune-telling tribe) which are waiting to pounce on you at the first opportunity to cause harm. Planets in themselves do not cause either good or bad happenings. In fact, they do not cause anything. They are just signs that you will have to confront certain issues in your life at a particular period or time. In the light of this knowledge, you can think as to how best you can rearrange your intentions and values in life, and not to fear some oncoming calamity. It should be seen as an opportunity for more seasoning. This knowledge puts you in control of circumstances effectively so that you can initiate action in a way to synchronise with the working of unseen forces of destiny and obtain desired results. It is precisely the lack of information about the trend of things to come that drives man in maddening circles fighting all the time against unseen forces, without being able to come to grips with problems confronting him from every direction. The astrological emagazine
Horoscope has the same utility in building one's career as the floor-plan and foundation drawings in the construction of a house. It provides you with the essential and relevant information. On the other hand fortune telling is the visual picture showing the colour scheme, fittings and decorations which, of course, would have instant appeal but are of consequence or importance. If you are planning the future of your child, what is the kind of information you need to have in order to make purposeful and meaningful decisions ? It would be, to begin with, to have as clear an idea as possible about the inherent talent of the child, the branch of knowledge that would blend with his aptitude and the kind of progress and the level of status he can achieve in the academic field. The art of prediction is in its psychological approach to the whole subject by unfolding the inherent tendencies and potential of the man and in revealing the kind of opportunities that are open, the constraints within which he has to operate and also in cautioning the kind of obstacles he will have to overcome. Perhaps the main challenge in the art of prediction is integrating a number of contributory factors. Overemphasis on any one factor gives a lopsided picture. Hence it is essential that one should take in a bird's eyeÂview of the entire pattern of life, before going into in-depth study of various aspects of life. The secret lies in viewing the horoscope through karaka planets (signiflcators) as focal points. You would then get a panaroma of life, revealed frame by frame, to give a wide and complete view. Herein we would be viewing the tendencies and potentials, the constraints and obstacles and not events that will happen with certainty. The delineation so obtained is indicative and is not mandatory or dictatorial and is for your benefit and guidance. The repetition is because the point cannot be stressed enough. In the context of interpreting a horoscope, a planet is merely a symbol. When the Sun is mentioned, you would do well to erase from your mind all thoughts about the star some 92 million miles away from our earth and its diameter and physical composition. What is relevant to astrology is that it depicts, as a symbol, such things as ego, father, benefactor, April 2015
