Jagadguru Speaks...

Prudence Must Precede Any Activity

The purpose of life for every man is the attainment of joy and peace. To achieve this, he makes use of every chance, in every possible way by performing various types of karmas (actions). In the process, his mind starts craving for impossibilities, and compliance to the demands of his craving mind and senses can cause his fall.

Hence, like a benign father, our Sastras advise man to exercise a bit of caution and think about the pros and cons while performing karma. Prudence and mind control are necessary for any activity; be it spiritual or otherwise.

One who has not conquered his senses will be driven to engage often in bad karmas, even if he does not like it. He eventually gets covered, like a silkworm, with the twists and turns of bad karma with no means of extricating himself

It is also a known fact that in accordance with the extent of dharma and adharma that a person has engaged in, he or she will proportionately enjoy and suffer in the life hereafter.

Hence, before engaging in any karma, it is advisable to ponder over the effects it will produce. Tuning the mind into a sattvic mode and doing the karmas in a spirit of surrender to the Almighty will yield a wise man a clear perception. Thence, his quest for joy and peace will well up to fulfillment by itself.

We bless everyone to understand this while performing allotted duties and make life meaningful.

Dear Readers,

The July issue of your favourite magazine explores the application of Vedic astrology in various aspects of life, from birth charts and health to ceremonies and global matters.

Vedic astrology offers a precise and data-driven approach to understanding life paths, as compared to vague newspaper horoscopes. It relies on the movements of celestial bodies to reveal insights that can be actively responded to. A Vedic birth chart serves as a detailed blueprint divided into sections called Bhavas or Houses, each containing specific insights into different aspects of life such as love, career, and hidden talents. While traditional descriptions of Bhavas can be complex, understanding them unlocks powerful tools for anticipating career challenges and improving relationships based on astrological insights. Varahamihira introduces the 12 Bhavas in his Brihat Jataka, using two sets of names: one for broad life areas and another for specific aspects within those areas. Raman Suprajarama simplifies and provides charts to help readers grasp each Bhava’s significance, enabling a clear understanding of individual horoscopes and their unique characteristics.

In our monthly series by Dr. S. Archna Murthy, she touches upon Medini astrology. The article introduces the concept of Medini Jyotisha or Mundane Astrology, which explores horoscopes not just for individuals but also for countries. “Medini” translates to “land” or “earth” in Sanskrit, emphasizing how planetary influences affect specific geographical locations. Similarly, Mundane Astrology in Western terms focuses on global or worldly matters. The article suggests that just as planets influence individuals, they also impact nations, including their leaders and citizens. It aims to explore how astrological principles apply to countries through the analysis of “Twelve Bhava” characteristics.

The sacred thread ceremony holds profound significance in Vedic traditions, particularly for those seeking knowledge. Originally practiced for both boys and girls across Brahmin, Kshatriya, and Vaishya castes, it now predominantly involves boys.

Dr. Phaniraj Mathamudre Shastry’s article provides guidance on auspicious seasons, zodiac signs (rasis), lunar mansions (nakshatras), and optimal timings for conducting and wearing the sacred thread. It serves as a comprehensive guide for anyone planning a thread ceremony.

The significance of the D-60 chart in Vedic astrology, according to Mantreswara and Parashara Maharshi, underscores its pivotal role in understanding the strengths and complexities of a horoscope. Parashara allocated substantial points to the Shashtyamsa (D-60) chart, emphasizing its importance over the Rasi (D-1) and Navamsa (D-9) charts combined in assessing planetary

strengths and past karma. This divisional chart provides detailed insights into an individual’s karmic journey across lifetimes, revealing the intricate influences of past actions on present circumstances. Despite its critical role, precision in birth data is crucial due to the D-60 chart’s sensitivity to even slight time variations. Dr. Nemani Venkata Raghunatha Rao’s article offers analysis and examples of notable personalities to illustrate these concepts in practice.

Lord Jagannath, known as the Lord of the universe, is revered for his mysterious nature and divine plays (lilas) that bring joy to his devotees through various rituals and ceremonies (pujas). According to scriptures, seeing Lord Jagannath as Dolagovinda during Dola Purnima, as Madhusudana during Chandana Yatra, and as Vamana during Ratha Yatra ensures liberation from the cycle of birth and death. The article, authored by Bibhuti Bhushan Pani, explores the significance of Ratha Yatra, highlighting the auspiciousness of the day which is Akshaya Tritiya, and delves into the astrological importance of the event and the symbolism of the chariots used during the festival.

In Palmistry, emotional instability can be indicated by certain signs on the palms like islands, chains, breaks, double lines, and spots on the palms. Dr. Akila S Murthy explores the implications of chain formations specifically on the Heart line in her article. She details how such formations predict emotional instability and identifies the specific life segment where this instability is likely to manifest.

Today’s astrology study underscores the enduring significance of Medical Astrology, highlighting how planets in the solar system influence not only health but all aspects of life. Birth chart house signs and their angular relationships play a crucial role in health matters, as each sign and planet govern specific organs. Disruptions in these correspondences can lead to health issues. “Health Astrology” is a specialized field that analyses physical characteristics and health concerns based on planetary positions and chart angles. Senay Devi’s article offers insights into medical astrology and guidance on interpreting horoscopes for health understanding.

At the end of the magazine, we present the monthly features encompassing forecasts tailored to your Moon sign, an Ephemeris providing celestial position data, and a comprehensive Calendar for the month of July. We encourage you to share your thoughts and suggestions with us at info@astrologicalmagazine.com, as we deeply appreciate and value your input and feedback.

SECRETS OF THE 12 HOUSES IN VEDIC ASTROLOGY

Forget those vague newspaper horoscopes! Vedic astrology is a whole different ball game. It’s a data-driven system based on the movements of the Sun, Moon, planets, and other celestial points across the zodiac. These movements, along with their speeds and states, unfold scenarios in our lives, that we can respond to.

A Vedic birth chart is a detailed blueprint. In them, we have sections called a Bhava or House, which holds specific information about a different area of your life, like love, career, or hidden talents. It’s like a massive dataset waiting to be interpreted.

The challenge? Traditional Bhava descriptions are often confusing and patchy. It’s like deciphering a teenager’s messy social media history! But with the right approach, the Bhavas can be a powerful tool for navigating and thriving life.

Imagine identifying potential career roadblocks before they appear, or improving your relationships based on astrological insights. This isn’t about airy predictions –it’s about actionable data. We’ll explore the 12 Bhavas and their meanings in detail to guide you on your path to success.

Varahamihira succinctly introduces the Bhavas in his Brihat Jataka. He mentions that there are 12 Bhavas, and provides two distinct sets of names for each. I’ve listed them in the below table.

House Set 1 Names Set 2 Names

1 Thanu – Body Kalya – Strength 2 Kutumba – Family Swa – Wealth

3 Sahotha – Brother Vikrama – Courage 4 Bandhu – Relation Griha – House

5 Putra – Child Pratibha – Intelligence

6 Ari – Enemy Kshata – Wounds or Sores

7 Patni – Wife Chitthota – or being born of the Mind

8 Marana – Death Randhra – Accidents

9 Shubha – Happiness Guru – Preceptor

10 Aspada – State Maana – Respect

11 Aaya – Gain Bhava – Domestic concerns

12 Ripha – Loss Vyaya –

Initially, it may seem confusing why Varahamihira used two sets of names to describe the 12 Bhavas. However, upon closer examination, Set 1 represents the broad areas of life that the Bhavas signify, while Set 2 indicates specific aspects within those areas. For example, Bhava 1 represents the Body as the general area, and Strength as a specific aspect related to the Body.

Think of the 12 Bhavas as analogous to different parts of your body:

• Set 1: These are like major body systems. For instance, you have the “Skeletal System”, the “Digestive System”, the “Nervous System” and so on.

• Set 2: These represent specific functions within each system. Within the “Skeletal System,” you find “Bones and cartilages”. The “Digestive System” will include mouth, esophagus, stomach etc. Similarly, the “Nervous System” includes brain, spinal chord, nerves and others.

Just as your body’s systems work together, the Bhavas symbolize different interacting areas of your life. Set 1 outlines these life areas broadly, while Set 2 delves into the specific functions within each area.

Based on this, we can confidently deduce that Set 2 provides examples, and there could be additional topics or attributes within Set 1 that these examples represent.

While the Bhavas have core meanings, their interpretations can be nuanced. Many later authors have built upon the foundational knowledge, offering more detailed descriptions of each Bhava’s influence.

Podumanai Chomadiri, in his book Jataka Desamarga, provides a concise overview of the various Bhavas. The table below summarizes his descriptions for each house. House Indications

UNVEILING THE ASTROLOGICAL MYSTERIES OF THE RATHA YATRA

The author is an Electrical Engineer from BPUT, Odisha. He was introduced into Jyothisha by his father Shri Bankim Chandra Pani. He has been learning Jyothisha for more than a decade. Books of Dr. B V Raman and Pandit Sanjay Rath helped him to understand and shape the knowledge of Jyothisha. He is an independent researcher on Jagannath Sanskruti and Mahapurusha Shri Achyutananda Das literature.

Dole tu Dolagovindam Chaape tu Madhusudanam | Rathe tu Vaamanam drustva Punarjanmam na vidyate ||

Lord Jagannath, the lord of the universe is mysterious. He is the one, who is doing many lilas (i.e. pujas & rituals) to give happiness to his devotees. As per Sastra if someone sees lord Jagannath as Dolagovinda during Dola Purnima, as Madhusudana during Chandana Yatra and as Vamana in Ratha Yatra – he will not take birth again. I bow down and pray in front of lord Jagannath to guide me to write this article on Ratha Yatra.

Ratha Yatra is often called as Shri Gundicha Yatra, Ghosha Yatra, Naba Dinatmaka Yatra and it starts in Ashada Sukla Dwitiya Tithi (2nd day of brighter half of Ashada Lunar Month). On this day lord Jagannath will come outside Shri Mandira to see the devotees. Lord Jagannath will go to his Janma Bedi at Mausima Mandira. The chariot/Rath work has been started from Akshaya Tritiya.

Astrological significance of Akshaya Tritiya – It is a Tithi when both Sun and Moon are transiting in the exalted sign, make the Tithi to be one of the most auspicious time in a year.

Question comes to our mind that ‘why

three chariots are being made for this Yatra?’

Three Chariots represents three Lokas (i.e. Bhu Loka, Bhuva Loka and Swarga Loka) that one can see with his

naked eyes. Another representation is that it shows three portions of Zodiac.

1. Aries to Cancer (Mesha Rasi to Karkata Rasi)

2. Leo to Scorpio (Simha Rasi to Vrischika Rasi)

3. Sagittarius to Pisces (Dhanu Rasi to Meena Rasi)

It also represents the three Gunas i.e. Satwa, Raja and Tamo.

The chariot being made between Akshaya Tritiya to Ashada Sukla Dwitiya and taken to the Simha Dwara. Some of the important rituals that are done during this period include:

1. Jyeshtha Masa Sukla Ekadashi This Tithi is called Rukmini Harana Ekadashi. On this day Laxmi Narayana Vivaha is being carried out in Sri Mandira (Lord Jagannath Temple).

Welcome to this monthly series where you will learn the fundamentals of Astrology in a structured manner. In the previous month’s issue of The Astrological eMagazine (June 2024), the details of Rasi and its connection to the Human Body were covered.

In this article, I will give an overview of Medini Jyotisha or Mundane Astrology.

Medini Jyotisha

Is horoscope only meant for an individual? Not really, there’s a specific section in Vedic Astrology called Medini Jyotisha or in English, ‘Mundane Astrology’. Here, horoscopes are designed and analyzed for a country.

Medini (रयि्ी) means land, earth, place. Hence, the influence of Grahas on a particular place is called ‘Medini Jyotisha’

Another name is Desa Gochara Desa, as we all know means country. Let’s split Gochara Go means Graha Chara means movement. In totality, Desa Gochara means a part of Vedic Astrology that deals with influence on a country caused by the movement of Grahas. Similarly in English, Mundane means relating to the world or earth. Hence, Westerners have termed it as Mundane Astrology.

When Grahas can influence one individual then naturally, Grahas will also influence the nature of the country, people in the country and its rulers. In Treta

Yuga, we see that Ayodhya did not have a ruler for 14 years due to malefic influence of Grahas. In the Shani Stotra written by King Dasharatha, it is described that the country suffered from famine by the influence due to the destruction of ‘Rohini Sakata’ by Saturn. This phenomenon is also mentioned in Surya Sidhantha. Hence, Mundane Astrology was examined in India from highly ancient times.

In modern times, Medini Jyotisha talks about the influence of Grahas on the person running the country i.e. our Prime Minister and the people of the country.

Significance of Thread Ceremony

Sacred thread ceremony is an important event for a knowledge seeker, especially Vedic knowledge. As a symbol of initiation of young Brahmin, Kshatriya and Vaishya caste born will be initiated into this ceremony which is in practice till date. In earlier days this was meant for both boys and girls, later it was limited to boys only.

The initiation or rite of passage ceremony in which the sacred thread is given symbolizes the child drawn towards a school, towards education, by the guru or teacher. The student was being taken to the Gods and made to practice a disciplined life to attain the Vedic knowledge.

Sacred Thread (Janeu) holds great value. Wearing of Janeu by a boy or a girl signifies their commitment to discipline and learning. It’s believed that wearing the sacred thread empowers the child to pursue knowledge and uphold moral values throughout their life. The ceremony signifies the transition from childhood to adolescence, marking the readiness for formal education and moral responsibilities. It is also said that wearing the Janeu and caring for it instills discipline in children for they are taught to adhere to certain rules of the ceremony.

According to Hindu beliefs, the Janeu is a shield against negative energies and thoughts. The three threads of the Janeu are a symbol of Maa Saraswati, Maa Parvati, and Maa Lakshmi. It is believed that a ‘Janeu Dhari’ is protected from impurities of any kind and the sacred thread helps in welcoming positive energy towards the wearer, enabling them to focus on their education and spiritual growth.

Preferred Ritus/Seasons

Vasantha and Grishma Ritu that comes in the month of March, April and May, June are auspicious months for carrying out the thread ceremony. It is always preferred to conduct this ceremony in Uttaryana only.

Preferred Age

The right age for the boys who are Brahmin born are 8th year, for Kshatriya born are 11th year and for Vaishya born the 12th year.

EXPLORING PAST AND PRESENT KARMA WITH SHASHTYAMSA (D60)

A doctorate in Business Management by profession. His Jyothish Teachers are: H. Ramadas Rao, Pt. Sanjay Rath, Pt. Dakshinamoorthy Ramasamy, Swami Omkar and Madhu Babu Prakhya. According to Mantreswara in his renowned classic Saravali, the influence of a horoscope is intricately tied to the strength found within the divisions of houses. Without this understanding, delving into astrology becomes a futile endeavor.

Parashara Maharshi meticulously divided each zodiac sign into 16 sections or Vargas. Among these divisions, he assigned 4 points to the Shashtyamsa (D-60) chart, while the Rasi (D-1) chart and the Navamsa (D-9) chart received 3.5 points and 3 points respectively. Consequently, in the evaluation of planetary strengths in Vimsopaka Bala, the D-60 chart carries more significance than both the Rasi and the Navamsa charts combined. Furthermore, in Parashara Maharshi’s assessment of the strength of planets in their respective Dasa Vargas, he allocated 5 points to the Shashtyamsa (D-60) chart, compared to 3 points for the Rasi chart and 1.5 points for the Navamsa chart.

The D-60 chart emerges as paramount in Parasara’s Vimsopaka Bala calculation, surpassing the significance of both the Rasi and Navamsa charts. Moreover, when Parasara delineated which aspects should be examined in which divisional chart, he emphasized the comprehensive nature of the D-60 chart, recommending its consultation for “Everything”.

However, despite its profound importance, caution is warranted in utilizing the Shashtyamsa, as its Ascendant can change within a span of two minutes. Therefore, precise and accurate birth data is imperative for its effective utilization.

In Vedic astrology, the concept of past karma is intricately linked with the analysis of the D-60 chart. According to Vedic philosophy, karma refers to the accumulated

actions and intentions from past lifetimes that shape one’s current circumstances and future experiences.

The D-60 chart is considered to be one of the most important divisional charts in Vedic astrology, as it provides insights into the finer details of a person’s karmic journey across lifetimes. Each divisional chart in Vedic astrology corresponds to specific areas of life, and the D-60 chart, being a sub-division of the Navamsa (D-9) chart, delves deep into the karmic implications of an individual’s actions and choices.

Analyzing the D-60 chart allows astrologers to discern the intricate tapestry of past karmic influences that manifest in the current lifetime. It provides a nuanced understanding of the challenges, blessings, and patterns that an individual may encounter as a result of past actions. Planetary placements, aspects, and conjunctions in the D-60 chart offer insights into the karmic debts and credits that an individual carries, shedding light on the lessons they are meant to learn and the experiences they are destined to undergo.

Have you come across someone who showers love or attention in the form of gifts or surprise visits?

This visible excitement in them makes you feel special and loved but suddenly everything disappears because you made a playful sarcastic comment. You end up facing the consequence in the form of nasty comments or long silent treatments, which feels like a punishment for some crime you committed.

This means you are dealing with a person who is emotionally unstable.

According to Palmistry, emotional instability is the result of various inauspicious signs present on the palms like island, chains, breaks, double lines and spots.

In this article I’ll explain what happens if there is a chain formation on the Heart line and which segment of life will this emotional instability be apparent.

Before I begin I will explain what is an ideal Heart line and its formation on the palm.

An Ideal Heart line is long, deep, clear and has no inauspicious markings.

Having a clear Heart line not necessarily makes a person loving and romantic. It means that the person has at least a

clear-cut emotional attitude to life and to people. Such people are emotionally stable and this stability is noticed by all those who interact with them.

On the contrary, a Heart line with series of tiny islands, which looks like a chain indicates emotional instability. In the sense, such people use their Heart more than their Mind. Their source of energy in life is purely based on emotions. Their lives may seem to be regulated by emotional relationships i.e. their feelings for others but these feelings are usually erratic.

Chained Heart liners are unpredictable in any kind of partnership arrangement. Family and friends have to learn to live with such people. Living with a temperamental minefield makes the family live on egg shells.

For example

Scenario 1: During a family gathering the chained heart liner could be super enthusiastically expressing something and suddenly might shut down and walk away. This leaves the rest of the family in confusion, if the chained heart liner is offended by some presumed comment or the excitement to express has just vanished.

Scenario 2: In a romantic relationship, a chained heart liner will communicate and share details about their life like you matter and you are part of their life, give you the warmth but suddenly they would ghost you for days or weeks or months. Then, suddenly reappear and when an explanation is asked, they would go so cold, you will have no idea how to react. This hot and cold behaviour is prominent.
