PLANETARY INDICATIONS FOR
INSANITY DR. B. V. RAMAN
T
HE MOST BAFFLING of man’s problems has always been the human mind. Western science is proud that it has begun to conquer nature and is talking in terms of cosmic flights though compared to the dimensions of the cosmos, which are inconceivable, the astronaut’s orbiting of the earth at a height of about 200 miles seems child’s play. In contrast to these achievements in the realm of physical science, there is a lamentable lack of development in the more important aspects of human existence, viz., mental and moral sciences. While the ancient Hindu Sages had under-taken a systematic analysis of the internal world of man on the “eternal principles of human nature”, the Western scientists have mainly confined their studies to the exploration of the “physico-chemical mechanisms” under-lying man’s existence. The human mind and its mysterious functions continue to be mysteries to the Western scientists, even though the symptoms of different types of mental diseases have been well classified. In the words of Dr. Carrel, “mathematics, physics and chemistry are indispensable but not basic sciences in the researches concerning living organisms. They are not capable of construct-ing concepts, specific to the human being”. Astrology or Jyotisha is indeed the science of the highest rank because it correlates the functioning of the inner world of man to the ceaseless ebb and flow of the cosmos. While the materialistic science can perceive only the gross body, contituted by heredity, the subtle body (linga sareera) carrying the karmic vasanas (impressions) of previous existences, escapes its grasp. It is the karma that conditions one’s existence in this life and the nature of this karma manifesting on the physical and mental planes is reflected in the horoscope. In an article published in a recent issue of Reader’s Digest, one Mr. Rutherford Platt suggests that man’s biorhythms—temperature, blood pressure and moods— follow regular swings and are linked to “fluctuations in barometric pressure, gravitational field and electricity in the air” and that these “earthly forces are in turn affected THE ASTROLOGICAL eMAGAZINE
by forces from outer space—by the phases of the Moon, by undula-tions in the pear-shaped electromagnetic field that surrounds the earth, by showers of gamma rays, cosmic rays and other electro-magnetic waves emanating from extra-terrestrial sources (italics ours) that bombard the earth’s atmosphere”. According to Dr. Harold Burr, emeritus professor of anatomy at Yale University School of Medicine, “what esta-blishes the pattern of a particular human brain and ‘regulates and controls it’ is actually a complex magnetic field”. Therefore, “in a manner not yet discovered, earthly magnetic fields may influence human behaviour, their rhythmic ebb and flow producing within our brains cyclical changes in feelings, alertness and sensibility and perhaps even stirring the memory or inciting ideas”. And these changes in the earth’s magnetic field are affected by solar flares, which in their turn are correlated to certain definite planetary arrangements. And all this is astrology pure and simple but put in the jargon of Western science. Would the reaction of each individual on earth to these cosmic bombardments be the same or different? The scientists do not yet know. But astrologers have already discovered that the reaction of an individual depends upon his particular pattern of the horoscope. It is the increasing incidence of neurosis and psychosis in the civilised countries of the West that seem to have impelled scientists there to study the correlation of celestial factors to human behaviour-patterns. Modern psychologists and medical men have not agreed amongst themselves about the exact causes of insanity. One school of thought still holds that insanity is due to certain organic changes in the brain. According to another school of thought, the majority of cases of insanity are “psychogenic in origin”. Yet another school regards insanity in the light of “biological or psycho-biological reac-tions”. It is significant to note that Hindu astrology gives pride of place to the affliction of the Moon (manas) and Mercury (brain) in judging mental disorders. Observation and statistical study have shown that insanity in most cases is congenital and in a few, acquired. A more careful study DECEMBER 2012

AVE YOU A SITE? Are you planning to construct your home? Here are basic principles of Vastu that you need to follow that can enable you to come with a nice Vastu appropriate home? The normal requirements of a moderate home are addressed here. However we suggest that based on the major planetary transits, the orientation and such other factors, vastu appropriate changes can be made. A door (that allows life energy into the room) gets strength only when it has four frames. Also, it is necessary that a door is never pushed to the extreme corner of the room. Bathroom The east sector is best suited for a bathroom (not the toilet) since the beneficial rays of the morning sun fall into the room. Manasara says : The central eastern frontage called Aditi is the place for bathrooms. The bathroom, where one has his daily bath is best in the east. The morning rays of the Sun are extremely beneficial for one’s health, body, metaphysical and political. The slopes within the bathroom can be towards north and east so that water drains into the northTHE ASTROLOGICAL eMAGAZINE
east of the bathroom. The geyser or the boiler can be in the South-east of the bathroom. Mirrors can be only on the east and north walls. Master Bedroom The south and west sectors of the home can be for the master room. Sleep with your head to the south. Outside the master room, a rock garden can be made. This will provide a natural setting as you look out from the window. This room may be occupied by the father or the eldest son of the family. The central south is also recommended for the elder son. The south or west of the room can be a store (for documents, etc) or wardrobe with ventilation on either side suitably provided. The beds or cots need to be away from the walls. The north of the northwest of room of the house can also be used to store valuables, property papers, cash , jewellery etc. Master bedrooms (if in the southwest sector) can door poorvaeashanya (east of northeast) of the room. The dressing table can be in east or north of the room. The attached bath can be to the north-west or south-east of the room. DECEMBER 2012

Kalachakra Dasa System RAMAN SUPRAJARAMA
A
STROLOGY IS A TOOL WHICH helps indicate the likely events in one’s life. The individual is given a blue print of his life, based on which he can carefully plan the steps to be taken in order to optimize it. An astrological student times the events based on DasaBhukti, transits and other heavenly phenomena. Of these, Dasa-Bhukti is given primary importance. The Vedic seers have given different Dasa-Bhukti patterns based on which a student of astrology can effectively time the events. The Vimshottari Dasa system is considered the foremost of all. Dr. B. V. Raman tells us that it can be used at all times irrespective of the nationality, caste, sex etc and is universally applicable. The next best Dasa system that can be adopted is Kalachakra Dasa. Certain events which are difficult to decipher from Vimshottari Dasa can be effectively inferred with the help of Kalachakra Dasa. The Fundamentals Kalachakra has two words – Kala meaning time and Chakrah meaning cycle. Kalachakra therefore means a cycle of time. There are arguments saying that Kalachakra Dasa is applicable only when Navamsa lord where moon is situated is strong. Parasara says that we can apply the Dasa system to all charts. Experience also suggests that it is universally applicable.
Kalachakra system considers the position of the Moon to find out the Dasa-Bhukti patterns. The birth star and the pada of the Moon are to be considered. The stars are divided into Savya (right to left) and Apasavya (left to right) groups. Groups of three stars each are made and numbered. Odd groups are known as Savya and even groups are known as Apasavya. Effectively, we get five sets for Savya group and four for Apasavya group. For Savya group, the Dasa counting is to be made in the clockwise direction ie Mesha, Vrishabha, Mithuna and so on. For Apasavya group, counting has to be made in the anticlockwise direction ie Vrischika, Tula, Kanya and so on. Order of Dasas In case of Savya group, the first cycle will be from Aries to Pisces (clockwise), second from Scorpio to Sagittarius (anticlockwise), third cycle will be similar to first and so on. In case of Apasayva stars, the first cycle will be from Sagittarius to Scorpio (clockwise), second from Pisces to Aries (anticlockwise), third cycle will be similar to first and so on. Only 9 signs are considered for Dasa pattern. The first sign and last sign in Savya group are considered to be Deha and Jeeva Signs and the reverse in case of Apasavya group. The calculation of Dasa sometimes seems confusing and the ancients have given sutras which can be adopted to easily identify the Dasa pattern.

Vaggeyakara Celebrations at
Greater Chicago Pallavi Music Academy is a greater-Chicago institution well known for teaching classical Indian (Carnatic) music. The institution is run under the overall direction of musicologist Dr. Jaishree Prasad, a leading scholar in Veena and vocal music and Head of Department (Music) at Sri Padmavathi Mahila University. It conducted “Vaggeyakara Celebrations” on 16th September 2012. The students of the Academy made group presentations of various compositions of renowned and respected music scholars Sri Sama Sastri, Sri Mysore Vasudevachar and Sri Muthuswami Dikshitar. Dr. Bangalore Sureshwara and Dr. Ravindranath Reddy were the Chief Guests.
Dr. Jaishree Prasad introducing Dr. Sureshwara (to her right) and Dr. Ravindranath Reddy to the audience
Ramayana for the Family Dr. Sureshwara is a scholar involved in the fields of Vedic Astrology, Bhagavad Gita, Ramayana, Mahabharata, Management and their applications in life. He spoke on “Ramayana for the family” to an audience that was virtually glued to the seats. He congratulated the students for the outstanding musical performance that kept the audience spellbound throughout the various presentations. Sri Ramayana is a historical story as well as a universal scripture that contains the story of Sri Rama. Dr. Sureshwara said that Ramayana contains many incidents and events that challenged the “Values” based behavior of various individuals. Values are the single powerful term that is used to define both “ethics” and “morals”. Sri Rama’s entire life is an example of Values based life. King Dasaratha was a great king but his judgment was challenged by his infatuated-love for Kaikeyi, at the time of appointing the crown-prince to the throne at Ayodhya. Dasaratha “agreed” to Kaikeyi's demand for two boons in the form of appointing Bharata as crown-prince, instead of Sri Rama, and to exile Sri Rama to the forest for fourteen years. Dasaratha’s behavior was not Values based, since the throne or kingdom only belonged to the people. He was merely a trustee of the Empire. On the other hand, Bharatha’s behavior was Values THE ASTROLOGICAL eMAGAZINE
based, since he rejected his mother’s offer of a throne, by rightfully pointing to her and others, that as Sri Rama was unanimously approved by the people of Ayodha and the respected leaders in the kingdom, the crown belonged only to his brother Sri Rama. Dr. Sureshwara pointed few more events and incidents in Ramayana that touched on the importance of Values. He emphasized that families must read Sri Ramayana and repeated reading helps in better and clearer understanding of the Eternal scripture. He concluded his talk by reminding the audience that parents are the role models for the children. The audience appreciated the presentation by a long applause at the end. Thyagaraja’s Divine Compositions Dr. Ravindranath Reddy is a leading physician and one who is well-read and well-informed about the extensive spiritual music of saint Sri Thyagarja Swamy . He spoke in detail about the carefully and clearly worded lyrics that Sri Thyagaraja used in his divine compositions. Words used by the saint exposed the immense love, divinity, respect and spiritualism that he felt for Sri Rama. The Pancha Ratna Kirtis have become the diamond bench mark for evaluating and understanding the classical Carnatic music. The learned audience was exposed to better understanding of the intricate and finer aspects of the words used in the music composed by the saint. Dr. Reddy’s talk was inspiring, interesting and informative. The grand finale of the musical program was a vocal and Veena presentation made by the entire students of music. The majestic and a magical presentation was greatly admired and appreciated. The respected Guru and the students received congratulations through a long standing ovation by the large audience. Dr. Jaishree Prasad spoke about Pallavi Music Academy and its objective to encourage and support Music and Values through its music curriculum. She reminded the large gathering about the eternal contributions made by Sri Thyagarja Swamy and other great musical giants of the past. There is no doubt that under the benevolent guidance of Guru Dr. Jaishree Prasad, some of the young musicians of today are likely to become future stars of classical Carnatic music. The large gathering left the auditorium with much delight, as well as looking forward to next year’s presentation. A program that was well planned and well executed. Congratulations and a great pat on the back to the music participants and the audience. DECEMBER 2012

Timings for Rahukala, Gulikakala and Yamakantaka 12 hours of the day and 12 hours of the night are divided into 8 sections each having duration of 90 minutes or 1½ hours each. The seven Upagrahas kaala, paridhi, dhooma, ardhaprahara, yamakantaka, indrachaapa and Maandi take over by turns their ruler-ship of the seven sections, each day, leaving one to Rahu. The period ruled by Rahu is called Raahukala which is generally considered inauspicious. The timings of the ruler-ship of Raahukala for the seven weekdays are furnished in the table below. The timings given are for days when the sunrise is 06.00 AM and sunset 06.00 PM. For calculating the exact duration of the period of Raahukalam, on any day, the duration of the daytime must be ascertained first and that has to be divided by 8. The result arrived will denote the duration of the

each of the 8 sections for the day. For example take a Sunday having the sunrise at 06.20 AM and sunset at 05.40 PM. The duration of the daytime will then be only 11h.20m.., or 680minutes. Divided by 8 the sectional value will be only 85 minutes. Raahukala generally for Sunday is from 16.30 to 18 hrs. In this case Raahukala must therefore be only for
85 minutes. It would commence 85 minutes before the actual unset of the day namely, 05.40 AM. Therefore the Raahukala for the day will be from 16h.15m, to 17h.40m. It has to be worked out accordingly for the periods of other Upagrahas also. Gulikakala is considered auspicious. Regarding Yamakantaka, popularly considered inauspicious, opinions however, differ.

MITHUNA (Gemini) Mrigasira 3, 4, Aridra and Punarvasu 1, 2, 3 The Sun in the early half, Mercury and Rahu are favourable. Others are not. This is not a very good position. In fact you find that some insignificant matters easily click, but your long cherished desires and important matters continue to be unsolved. In routine matters you do succeed. Your skill helps you and you have a clear edge over others. In the office you perform with sagacity. In the normal functions you are appreciated. But when you are entrusted with the task of greater responsibility you find that the cooperation of your colleagues is insufficient and at the same time your rivals steal a march over you brushing aside your claims. Your success is treated as an accident and failure is exaggerated. Even your earlier influence now fades away and new associates do not offer a helping hand. Proposals for marriage are thwarted by enemies and some women with strong prejudices. Your health is satisfactory in the beginning. In the latter half you may undertake travel and develop sickness relating to digestion.
Venus and Ketu in the major part of the month help you. This is a good disposition of planets. There is a plenitude of interesting experiences. First of all, your position in the profession makes you happy. You are able to impress the higher ups and your lovely qualities also give you a clear edge. Proposals for marriage, attempts for childbirth etc. Succeed. There is flow of income. In the early half you find that many currents against you gradually vanish and lead you to success. Some of the enemies make friends with you partly prompted by your vantage position in office and social circle. Your are honoured in many places. Your children make you happy in general, but for some stray instances of disobedience. Your conjugal life is happy. The honeymooning couples enjoy themselves and travel with pleasure. Those engaged in romance may meet with some setbacks because of over enthusiasm. You commit some mistakes due to carelessness, but you get over that easily partly due to the favour of your associates. Your applications for loan and other favours get easily sanctioned. On the whole, a good period. Punarvasu: There will be unfavourable currents. Injuries are likely. You gain from investments and win the favour of seniors. Pushya: There will be gains through investments. There will be success in disputes. There will be favourable currents which cheer you up. Aslesha: There will be concern about your health. There will be injuries in the first part and success in the second. Many unfavourable currents give you dissatisfaction.
Newly weds are not happy. They may face opposition of in-laws. Some seniors in the family may find it difficult to imbibe your view reflecting generation gap.
SIMHA (Leo) (Makha, Poorvaphalguni and Uttaraphalguni 1)
Mrigasira: Investments prove successful. Injuries are likely in the first half and the latter half fetches fortune.
Mars in the latter half, Mercury, Venus, Saturn and Rahu help you. Others do not. Mecury’s Vedha Check partly mars the results and so is that of Venus.
Aridra: There will be problems of health giving concern. There may be injuries in the second half. There will be favourable currents, which cheer you up. In general this a good disposition of planets. Many good results happen though some fall short of expectations. It is true that the proposals for marriage do not easily click. Still with some delay they bear fruit. In some case the marriage relating to children also get delayed. In official career there is some lull, but your outstanding work is suddenly recognized and you get elevated by merit. It is not to the taste of your rivals who try to indulge in tarnishing your image.
