edic Astrology is based on the individual’s Prarabdha Karma. Prarabdha Karma is the accumulated Karma that an individual inherits in the current life from Karma that has been generated in previous life or lives. The horoscope, based on Prarabdha Karma, is not a deterministic information document but is an indicative map of the individual’s potential in life. The key to success is that by human effort, often referred to as will-power, an individual may convert the indicated potential to positivereality.Let us recollect that Dr. B.V. Raman had time after time emphasized that Vedic Astrology is an indicative field. Malefic and Benefic: Yesterday’s Words An incomplete impression or belief exists in limited number of people who are involved in Vedic Astrology, either as professionals, consultants or clients, that among the nine planets, Jupiter and Venus are always “benefic” or good, while Sun, Saturn and Mars are always “malefic” or bad. Again, Full Moon is considered benefic and New Moon is a malefic. Mercury is good or bad depending on its specific association with one or more of the benefics or malefics. It is said that the wordsbenefic and malefic have their origin or were derived from Latin language. The word benefic implies positive. It may mean advantageous, beneficial, favorable, good, orhelpful. On the other hand, the word malefic implies negative. It may mean destructive, disastrous, evil, fatal, harmful orpoisonous. Words are powerful, especially words such as “malefic” or “benefic” thatare used to identify a specificplanet. The use or association of the term malefic as a prefix to a planet (ex: malefic Mars or malefic Saturn), possibly The astrological emagazine

and primarily resulted because of the limited or narrow understanding of Sanskrit language, Vedic Astrology and/ or English by those who initially translated the original classical Sanskrit texts to English. Even in the unlikely event the term malefic is a “reasonable” translation of the original Sanskrit word, it indicates negative and troubling approach and more importantly it is likely to have anunhelpful influence or impact on the individualwho is either reading the text or the one who hears the words.. Widely recognized and acceptable references or text books and well-known scholars have not explicitly indicated thatout of the nine planets considered in Vedic Astrology, some of the planets, are exclusively good or bad. Similarly, none of the twenty-seven stars are considered exclusively good or bad. All the planets and stars considered in Vedic Astrology provide for most of the horoscopes, indications that are partially positive or encouraging and partially negative or challenging. Practically, there are areas of astrology in the twenty-first century thatneed to finesse its terminology and adoptpositive terms to ensure that the public is free of fear and are comfortable when they consult an astrologer or refer to an astrological literature. The use of terms such as “benefic” and “malefic”, at best, is little misleading. As an example, if a practitioner says that “Saturn bhukthi is bad”, “ Malefic Saturn bhukthi is starting…”, “ As Mars is evil, so its bhukthi will cause problems”, etc. to a client who has specifically come to seek solace, comfort or solution to a family, other problem or a difficult situation, it is very likely that the client instead of feeling better will end up feeling worse. An opportunity has come to remove words such as “malefic”, “evil” and“bad” from the entire vocabulary of astrologers and January 2014

With his leadership qualities, he became a student front-runner of the Akhil Bhartiya Vidhyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and played a conspicuous role in the anti-corruption movement of Gujarat in 1974. Joining BJP at the age of 37, he became the general secretary of its Gujarat unit the next year. Modi rose gradually to become the party’s national general secretary in charge of five states in 1995. He travelled world wide. He rose to be Chief Minister of Gujarat in 2001. As Prime Minister candidate of BJP, he has set the ball of his party’s awareness rolling bright and well. Modi’s frank and fearless public speeches has literally swept people off their feet and the BJP’s win in the recent assembly elections in four states - Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, Chattisgarh and Rajasthan - is being associated with the ‘NaMo’ wave.. While the BJP trounced the Congress party in the Delhi getting 32 of the 70 seats, the debut Aam Admi Party of Arvind Kejriwal did wonderfully well, in its maiden attempt, getting 28 seats. Rahu

hen we look at the mode of reproduction, starting from the lower order of the species, we find that multiple births constitute the rule rather than the exception. Then as we go up the hierarchy, we find that mammals and other living beings give birth to fewer offsprings at one point of time. The gestation period also becomes longer as the evolutionary ladder goes up. In man, birth of twins is not a regular phenomenon – though not infrequent altogether – and what needs to be said is that birth of twins is an exception rather than the rule, when we study the patterns of reproduction. One of the earliest recorded astrological evidence about twin births is found in the ancient epic Ramayana. King Dasaratha invited the venerable sage Vasishta to his palace and got the learned astrologer to cast the horoscopes of his four new born children. Rama was born at a very auspicious time – Uttarayana, Sukla Paksha, Navami, Somavara, month of Chaitra and in Abhijit ascendant at a time when the weather was also pleasant. Bharata was born the next day, Dasami. On the third day – Ekadasi - were born the twins - Lakshmana and Shatrughna in Aslesha nakshatra and Vriddhi Yoga. Now, let us have a look at some of the text book rules regarding the birth of twins. Rama Dayalu`s Sanketa Nidhi, Chapter 2 Verse 3

A child, who is born when the Sun is in a quadruped sign and the other planets are strong and happen to be occupants of dual signs, is born as one of the twins. The reader can very easily notice the streak of similarity between Rama Dayalu and Parasara. Kalyana Varma’s Saravali 1. When Sun and Jupiter are together present in Gemini or Sagittarius, male twins are born. 2. Venus, Mars and the Moon in Pisces or Virgo aspected by Mercury give rise to female twins. 3. Ascendant and Moon in even signs aspected by strong planets give rise to twin births –one from each sex. 4. Twins are born when the Moon and Venus are rendered strong in even signs and Ascendant, Mars, Mercury and Jupiter occupy odd signs with strength. Vaidyanatha`s Jataka Parijatham, Chapter 3 Verse 32

There occurs twin births when there is a conjunction between lords of ascendant and third house. So is the case, when ascendantlord is exalted or when occupying a Varga of 3rd Lord. The rule laid down by Vaidyanatha is a very important doctrine having a powerful impact on the horoscope of twins. This can be considered as a master key, which can be used to open the door, which leads us to the room of mysteries of twin-births. Horasara of Prithuyasas, Chapter 4, Verse 11

n this article we will explorethe phenomenon known as magnetosensitivity or magnetoception -- the ability to sense magnetic fields. This article extends the literature of Vastu by examining how various creatures, including humans, have the potential to use their internal as well as external compasses to identify position and direction for optimal living and functioning. Vastu is the science of space developed in the scriptures of ancient India. Its western counterpart is Feng Shui, the science of placement. India’sVastu Shastratells us that solar and geomagnetic radiation identifiesthe bestdirectionsfor improving life on earth. Basically the earth is giant magnet. Vastu supplies us with tools and techniques to use that natural magnetic field to find positional, directional, and navigational informationto enhance our home and work spaces on earth.

Vedic sages such as Maharishi Patanjali (Yoga Sutras 3:29) indicated thousands of years ago that is possible for humans to detect the northern pole star mentally as a source of position and direction. It was not until recent years that humans were believed to have an innate sense to detect and navigate via the earth’s magnetic field. There is a renewed interest by researchers concerningthe natural ability of certain animals to recognize the presence of the magnetic field. This is called magnetoception or magnetoreception. While there is no current full scholarly agreement on human sensing of magnetism, there is revived interest in exploring the correlation of geomagnetic fields on the light system of human eyes, and upon apparent position and direction receptors in the brain (Nature Communications, 2011). The astrological emagazine

Magnetoception was first referencedby Lindauer and Martin in 1972. They identified it as the “sense which allows an organism to detect a magnetic field to perceive direction, altitude or location.” The concept of magnetosensitivitywasfirst proposed to explain animal navigation in vertebrates and insects, and as a method that animals and other organisms orient to magnetic fields to develop regional maps of their local habitats. Studies have shown that many of earth’s creatures, such as birds, sea turtles, honey bees, fruit flies, mollusks, and even bacteria have the ability to sense the earth’s magnetic field (Wiltschko, 2005; Lohmann and Putnma, 2007). While there is no universal concurrence as to how specifically this is done, these creatures are known to access magnetic information to determine their position and direction, especially for long distance journeys. Recent university studies at places such as the Theoretical and Computational Biophysics Group at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (2009)propose that some earth creatures can perceive geomagnetic fields using a light-sensitive chemical reaction involving a special protein called cryptochrome (CRY). Human cryptochrome, called CRY2, present in the retina, has the molecular capability to function as a light-sensitive magnetosensor. There are several species that are believed to have magnetic field sensitivity. Bacteria Blakemore, writing in Science magazine in 1975, first reported that there is a class of bacteria that demonstrates January 2014

errorism is the biggest challenge to mankind such that it calls for Investigative Astrology to contribute its mite towards understanding terror attacks astrologically. In the wake of upcoming elections in 2014, with the Indian Prime Minister already having apprehended probable terror attacks at election time and a series of bomb blasts already witnessed at Patna in a political rally on 27rd October, 2013,the enormity of this problem is an area of concern to astrologers. This article is a nutshell of a detailed analysis of astrological factors found at the time of terror attacks in India since the 1990s till date. The Indian Independence chart gives the major clues on what is wrong with the Indian horoscope in terms of terror attacks.

1. All the planets are hemmed in between Rahu and Ketu causing KalasarpaYoga, in the Indian Natal chart. For an individual, it reflects unusual and unexpected life-situations, according to his Karma of the previous birth. For the nation too, it reflects unusual events as a result of previous karma in this land. India of today is the legacy of the past invasions and colonial occupations. The Vilomatype of Kalasarpa with Ketu ahead of Rahu shows that India loses heavily in its new birth in the post Independence period. It is AnanthaKalasarpa Yogawith Rahu in the lagna and Ketu in the 7th having all the planets in between them. This shows that there will be struggles and turmoil. For an individual, the affliction is with reference to his spouse and married life as the yoga is in 1-7 axis. In the mundane analysis, the relationship is between the rulers and the ruled, between the Government and the people or between India and the other nations. Such relationship is always under struggle is what is made out from this yoga for India. 2. Venus, the lord of the first and the 6th is in Aslesha, in the 3rd house associated with Saturn, Sun, Moon and Mercury. It joins Saturn in its own Navamsa where it is hemmed between Mars and Rahu. The 3rd house is occupied by 5 planets affecting the significances of the 3rdbhava. The 3rdbhava signifies younger siblings. Pakistan is the younger brother of India that was carved out of Greater India at the time of Independence. The affliction to the 3rdbhava indicates afflicted relationship with Pakistan! It will be more pronounced in the Mahadasa of the 3rdlord Moon, which is to start from September 2015. 4. The afflicted 3rdbhava is also indicative of a sibling rivalry –a kind of never ending differences between the various sections of people of this country. The various communities and groups within India which are diverse in terms of religion, caste, language and social hierarchy are all siblings born to Mother India. The affliction to the 3rdbhava portends a not-so good relationship among these various sections. 5. The lord of the natural 3rd, Mercury who owns the 2nd and the 5th is caught among the planets in the 3rd bhava, afflicted by Saturn. This shows that there is stress to domestic well being and financial well being of the country besides a low to the purvapunya (Mars and Saturn aspecting the 5th) which is characterized

by Dr. Bangalore Sureshwara Sage Valmiki, Ramayana and Sri Rama have been an integral part of life. The story of Sri Rama is told in many ways, but the basis for the storyis primarilyValmiki Ramayana. This book is different from many of the currently available books on Ramayana and is primarily focused on the topic of “Values, Then and Now”. Dr. Sureshwara has presentedRamayana as aknowledge based book in which is embedded historical story, theological text and Values. Values imply morals and/or ethics. While, the twenty-first century has brought in significant material advances, it has also brought in new challenges thatcan result in generationalor other afflictions in the families. Ramayana has information, as indicated in the book that can guide or help one towards also restoring the traditional generational affections within the family. This Ramayana book offers spiritual or Value based information to grandparent, parent and grown child in the family. The objectiveis to ensure that the family is a monolithic structure, even when it is composed of two or more generations. The author Dr. Bangalore Sureshwara, an Aerospace Engineer, also teaches MBA courses. As an example, he has rightly pointed out the improper or inappropriate use by some persons, due to indifference or ignorance, of the alien word “mythology”, when referring to scriptural books and epics such as Ramayana and Mahabharatha. The author further points out information contained in Ramayana which are applicable and possible even in the twenty first century. The book is about 175 pages andhas a font size that makes it comfortable to read by anyone. One can effortlessly read it in a matter of days. Re-reading of the book helps in better understanding of Values contained in Ramayana and their application in one’s life today. “Ramayana, Values, Now and Then” makes an appealing and eye-catching coffee-table book. It is also a wonderful gift to give on any occasion to a friend or a family member. very time the ionized clouds of the Sun’s storms reach the earth, they disrupt the magnetic field, its direction and magnitude. This phenomenon affects the orbiting space crafts, the satellites, the power grids, the internets. Such occurrences have happened earliar. It is also seen that such celestial happenings, not excluding the coming of asteroids, the appearance of Sun spots, and the occurrences of eclipse have caused changes in geo-ecological structures, mass revolt, war like situations, and heavy damage to the lives and property. The connection of the celestial bodies and the terrestrial phenomenon were well visualized by our ancient Rishis, who could delineate and forewarn such occurrences, such as volcano’s, earthquakes, draughts, revolts bloodshed, epidemics and as specific individuals as fever , strokes, physical and mental aberrations in individuals. The fore warning known beforehand enable one to take timely and proper corrective measures to avoid misery, destruction of lives and property. This article is just to enable an individual to observe and take cognizance, the validity of the relationship between the astronomy and astrology. It is fool hardiness to deny the findings of our Rishis. The eruptions of the Sun’s storms are increasing alarmingly. No wonder the geographical plates are drifting rapidly. No wonder the devastating storms have been witnessed in the previous year 2013.No wonder ecological changes such as reducing of daytime and turning of portions of night into day are observed. Just to remind readers the effect of such The astrological emagazine

phenomenon, the failure of power grid in USA plunged the cities into darkness for days together. No wonder the rulers all over the world are in the grip of uncertainties, turbulences and are war ridden. Here I would just mention a few of such happenings - the ecological disturbances in United State of America, market fluctuations and downslide of economics in scores of countries, etc. I emphasize that these happenings are due to the changes in the celestial bodies and if you do disrobe yourself from the false hopes , analyze the inner self within , you will soon realize and attribute these to the concept of Fate, concept of God, concept of Cosmic forces. Withdraw these celestial changes and one will not have these happenings. Sans these celestial changes such terrestrial happenings would not have been there, nor would have occurred. I reiterate that at all times colossal changes on earth were not there when these celestial changes were not there. With the above background, let me diagnose the probabilities in the present juncture. In astrological parlance diagnosis begins with casting of a chart, the birth chart for the New Year 2014. In Vedic Astrology, the Hindu New Year begins when the Sun enters the 1st degree of Aries, the solar New Year or Lunar New Year. Here an attempt is made to read the happenings of the world events in 2014 basing on the 1st January 2014, at sunrise time, at New Delhi. While looking at the outlook January 2014

n Vedic astrology there are two main types of aspects - rasi aspects and planetary aspects. Rasi aspects are fixed, and not moving. This means rasis aspect each other. Any planet in a rasi will aspect any other planet in a rasi it aspects. For instance, Leo and Capricorn aspect each other through Rasi aspect. Any planet in Leo is going to aspect any planet in Capricorn, regardless of the degrees, because Leo and Capricorn aspect. rasi aspects are solid, fixed aspects and tend to show things that are core qualities of an individual’s Karma that are fixed.

Rasi aspects are calculated: • The fixed signs aspect the movable signs, except the one next to it • The movable signs aspect the fixed signs, except the one next to it. • The dual signs all aspect each other. Planetary Aspects “All the planets have their full aspect on the seventh house, and again, Saturn, Jupiter and Mars have their full aspects respectively on the third and tenth houses, the fifth and ninth houses and the fourth and eight houses.” - Brihat Parashara Hora Sastra Ch.28 V.5 Translation G.C. Sharma

In addition to Rasi aspects, the planets have very specific aspects in Jyotisha. Unlike Western astrology where all planets "square" each other, all planets "trine" each other, etc., in Vedic astrology planetary aspects are much more intentional, specific and often "non-mutual". By "nonmutual", I mean to point out that a special aspect from Mars, Saturn and Jupiter are usually being cast "one way”. The other planet is usually not returning the aspect. mutual special planetary aspect only occurs when Saturn is four signs in front of Mars. But in general, when Jupiter is in a trinal relationship with Venus, it is not a mutual aspect. Jupiter is putting a “one way” aspect onto Venus and Venus is not returning the aspect. In this situation Venus would be receiving an aspect. This is unlike an “opposition” were both planets are aspecting each other, sharing their energy. So again, the special aspects in Vedic astrology are as follows: • Mars aspects four houses and eight houses in front • Jupiter aspects five houses and nine houses in front • Saturn aspects three houses and ten houses in front An Analogy: A Planetary Massage When planets are in opposition to each other, it is like two people massaging each other, sharing their influence. But the one-way aspect, from Mars, Jupiter or Saturn, is like one person is massaging the other, and the other is not reciprocating it. When we consider these special aspects, we have to realize that two of the planets are challenging/malefic planets. A one-way aspect from Mars or Saturn to important planets in a natal chart can feel pretty intense and often shows moments of deep change and transformation as we face life's difficulties. As with everything else in astrology, exact degrees are important. Applying or separating degrees are also important when looking at aspects. Planetary aspects are fluid, based on degrees of orb and calculated in Virupas of strength. Unlike rasi aspects, the planetary aspects show a dynamic being worked out. strology or Jyotisha dates back to the Vedas, the knowledge books of India. Jyotisha means the light of god. With the help of a horoscope we are able to identify karmic past and their manifestation in this birth. This article will deal with the institution of Marriage with specific reference to separation and divorce. 7th house (and its lord) represents spouse and partners. Sage Parasara in his BrihatParasaraHoraSastra tells us: Separation is indicated • •

When 7th house lord is in the house of its enemy If 7th lord is debilitated or 7th lord is receives aspects from malefic planets or is in Astangatva. o Astangatvameans near to or in conjunction with Sun. • If 7th lord is positioned in 6th, 8th or 12th houses and is weak - conjunction with malefic planets. • If the 7th house is occupied or aspectedby malefic planets. Varahamihira in his BrihatJatakasays that If there is a mix of good and bad planets in the 7th house, one will have more than one marriage. This view is also supported by KalaynaVarma in his Saravali. Mantreswarain his Phaladeepikasays: If Venus or 7th lord is hemmed between malefic planets or is conjunct with or aspected by malefic planets, losing a partner is indicated. KalyanaVarma in his Saravali tells us that Mars in 7th house indicates loss of partner and if Mars is aspected by Saturn, death of the partner is indicated. It is to be remembered that Saturn, Mars, Sun, Rahu and Ketu are considered natural malefic planets while Jupiter and Venus are said to be natural benefics. When Saturn or Rahu involve with 7th house affairs, the spouse has past life debts to be repaid in one’s presentmarried life. Saturn and Rahu represent separation, sometimes due to the death of the spouse. If Mars is involved, either of the partners can become aggressive causing disharmony in married life. Case study Male, born June 20th, 1975 at 13.23 at Hong Kong The Ascendant is Virgo. 7th house lord Jupiter is in his own house. This indicates that the wife is strong and is endowed with leadership qualities. Since Mars is with Jupiter (7th lord), the wife will be stubborn and quarrelsome. Jupiter also receives aspects of Rahu and (10th) of Saturn. Saturn and Rahu signify separation. Pisces is badhakasthanam and badhakadipathi Jupiter is in Pisces. The saying karakobhavanashaya applies here. The marriage broke and the native had to separate from his wife and son. Saturn, as fifth lord has the 4th aspect from Mars. Saturn also becomes combust being with Sun indicative of loss of children. Given below are few combinations that are indicative of separation and/or divorce. •

Sun, Saturn, Rahu occupying, aspecting (or conjunct in) the 12th house indicate separation. For instance, if two or more of the above mentioned planets influence the 4th house and its lord, one is forced to leave his home or country of birth. For example, if two or more of the above-mentioned planets influence the 4th House and its lord, one is forced to leave his home or country of birth causing seperation from spouse and family. If they influence the 10th house, its lord and Sun, one seperates from thebenefits of the ruling powers such as resigning(or termination) from service, change in profession etc. Jupiter in 7th house, even as its lord does not give satisfactory results and is indicative of disappointment in marital life. This position of Jupiter is also indicative of delay in marriage. When Venus in in the constellations of Krittika, Moola, Aridra or Jyeshta, marital disharmony (seeking seperation) is indicated. Krittika, in particular can be very detrimental. When 7th lord is in the 6th house and in affliction, separation from the spouse is seen. January 2014
