Avoid Seeking Help; Conquer Lust Whatever good qualities one might have, one becomes small when he seeks another man’s help. Particularly degrading is seeking alms from a mean person. Mahakavi Kalidasa said: ³eeáee

It means even if an ignoble person is agreeable to helping us while a noble person refrains, it is better to look to the latter and not the former. So, it is best not to seek anything from mean people. Similarly, one cannot be called valourous just because one has defeated ene-mies in a battle. Only the person who has steered clear of Manmatha’s arrows is truly valiant. For, it is very difficult to overcome passion. One who does so is considered Shreshtha (exalted). In the Mahabharata, Bhishma was praised for his valour. He had defeated not only his enemies, but also the God of Love. From birth, he was a strict adherent of brahmacharya. Thus, not seeking help from mean persons and conquering lust will take a man to noble heights. Everybody should behave thus and attain Shreyas.

Reminiscences
Dr. B. V. Raman The Gentle Colossus Bhaskaradaasan
T
he closure of the world-famous The Astrological Magazine of Bangalore in 2008, made the eyes of thousands of admirers of astrology, in and out of India, go wet with anguish. This scribe also was no exception. His association, with the magazine had started in the late forties, from his school and college days. Some of his professors, for whom this scribe was a pet student, were regular contributors to the magazine.
appropriate for him to limit his observations to a few of his off-the-record experiences with Dr. Raman.
Nobody, even in wildest of their dreams could have imagined that the magazine, which had grown virtually into an enviable institution, would be compelled to draw down its curtains after its impeccable domination, in the astrological journalism, of over 70 years. Immediately after the cessation of publication there was a spate of queries from a large number of friends of this scribe that made him sadder. Many of the astute readers were apprehensive of the continuance of the magazine. All were hoping against hopes that somehow the magazine would be revived.
This scribe, after completing his traditional astrological training with a great luminary of Kerala took a vow not to turn a professional anytime. Knowing this, his guru blessed him, at his request that his astrological advice to any must not land them in further troubles and no one insincere and unworthy for advice could succeed in meeting him. This has come true till date. Only the Gurukripa has made him infallible, so far, in predictions. When he told Dr Raman, about this, he was amazed. The scribe had the great privilege of meeting and interacting with many erudite scholars, mostly in Kerala, and some in Tamilnadu and also a few from north India.
When Dr. Raman, left for his heavenly abode in 1999, it was perhaps the providence that decided his magazine to sprout into two, after some time. When Niranjan Babu, the erudite son of Dr. Raman, took over the mantle of the editorship, of a new avatar of the magazine, it was a sigh of relief for many of the old readers of The Astrological Magazine. When Niranjan Babu asked this scribe to share few of his experiences with that “gentle colossus who dominated the astrological world over seven decades, he felt a bit hesitant, as he had done this on some earlier occasions also. Nevertheless, as one who has been a student and admirer of this gentle colossus for several decades, he dares to write these few lines as he feels that he must not miss this opportunity to share some lesser known facts of his experiences of this great genius, with you all. This scribe was fortunate to cultivate with scores of eminent scholars of astrology of yesteryears. That makes him think, in the fitness of things, that it would be The astrological emagazine
Dr Raman was one whom the entire astrological world adored and adulated. Many of the mentors of this scribe were good friends of Dr Raman. Only his association with those great stalwarts, who shaped him to what he is today, makes this scribe venture into this task.
His association with late Mr. Ganapathy Iyer, an astrological savant and our family friend, who was then the chief jailor, Madras, late L Narayana Rao, who was writing a series on ancient planetary computational methods, in The Astrological Magazine, late C G Rajan, late Sri Venkatasubramaniam, of Maada Jyothidam of Vellore, and others led him to have a serious discussion on Surya Siddhanta with Dr Raman. When he wrote about the lack of scientific basis and scriptural sanction for the belief and practice of Rahukalam, Dr. Raman unhesitatingly published it. He was aware of the fact that this scribe, along with Prof. Koru, another scholar and teacher of this scribe, was working on an effort to present Karanapaddhati in terms of modern mathematical concepts, in Malayalam. Dr Raman wanted him to send articles on some such topics, in English. As this scribe was then deeply involved in the studies of various Siddhantas and works of Bhaskaracharya, especially Leelavati and Bijaganitha, he August 2016
