Solar Physics

& Biology in the Vedas Prof. B. Suryanarain Rao

ET US TAKE A COMPARATIVE view of the knowledge of solar physics and biology among the modern scientists, among the ancient civilised nations, and among the early Sanskrit writers. So far as we have studied and referred to European books and authorities, classical and civilised are the two words which are invariably referred to by them to denote the ancient Greek and Roman literatures and occasionally to Chaldean, Ethiopean, Egyptian and Persian civilisations. The accounts relating to Hindus have been studiously left out. While there are many reasons for this grand omission, one seems to strike us strongly and that is no light one either. Christian missionaries and political causes, led the early prejudiced writers to overlook the existence of the vast stores of the Vedic sciences and the high degree of civilisation its followers had attained to at the very outset of the world’s evolution. Even today the Western writers and religionists are quite unwilling to accept any grand truths from the ancient Hindus. The orientalists are happy in their own fields of investigation and whether their inferences are justifiable or not they have the supreme satisfaction of supporting each other, copying from each other and crying down the native talents. When they do not suit their own whims and fancies, most of them are cowards behind the walls, for the generality never come forward, from there covers, meet the learned native pandits of India and argue with them in an open and fairminded manner and the erroneous views of Sanskrit literature which they learn in Sanskrit under the name of oriental scholarship. When challenged to hold their own grounds, they decline to meet the talent indigenous, and content themselves with the success their books have wrought among the European public who are thoroughly ignorant of India, and the vast intellectual treasures it contains. The intellectual fight has therefore to be maintained between writers who decline to meet personally and who are incompetent to explain one simple stanza without referring to their note books, abstracts and quotations and the Hindu pandits who have the best of Sanskrit information at their fingers’ ends and who could simply crush their adversaries by their superior knowledge, THE ASTROLOGICAL eMAGAZINE

critical study and the wonderful memory for which the Eastern adepts are noted all over the world. The English knowing graduates and others who dabble in Sanskrit are themselves afraid to meet the true scholars of India. Under these circumstances we need not be surprised to see that India is omitted altogether from the list of civilised countries and its literature is entirely thrust back by the force of prejudice to give room for one which many of the orientalists try to set up as the orientalistic scholarship in Sanskrit “ which would be acceptable to their preconceived ideas of knowledge and advancement.” Among the Chaldeans, Egyptians, Arabians, Persians, Greeks and Romans, no separate books have been written to elucidate the solar and the physical phenomena. We would ask the scholars who are acquainted with those languages to produce any books which they may have found in their researches treating extensively about the solar phenomena. Other early and civilised nations were no better situated with reference to this question of solar physics and solar biology than the above named nations. But almost all the ancient nations who were advanced in civilisation had some vague ideas of the greatness and importance of the solar phenomena. There is always a grand difference between knowledge which is full, clear and convincing in details and the vague sort of information which is indefinite and uncertain in its conception of the greatness of the object. The modern sciences admit the statement that without the sun’s light and heat nothing can exist even for a second and that all the terrestrial and celestial manifestations are the direct results of solar radiation and gravitation. Even here the details are not minutely understood and definiteness is prominently absent. The Sun has only one name in the English language and that expresses no primary or derivative meaning unless we take it through many twistings to the Sanskrit root Swar—heaven— the Sun moving in the heavens. If our attention be now directed to the rich mines of the Aryan literature and sciences the results we obtain there are simply astounding and show the thoroughness of the research which had been instituted by the early Sanskrit Rishies. Jnana Yogas Jayasree Saranathan

W With a Masters degree in astrology, she is a practitioner of astrology (and palmistry) for twenty years. She is currently doing Research in astrology. While her teacher was maternal grand father, Kaazhiyur Bashyam Iyengar, she says she owes her knowledge largely to Dr B.V. Raman whose books enriched her perception of astrology.

EALTH IS OF TWO TYPES – material and spiritual. A man’s life begins with a quest for material wealth and then transforms into a search for spiritual wealth. The Ashrama-dharma envisages the same, with the first stage of life being spent on learning, which becomes the basis for both material and spiritual wealth. The Grahastha period is spent on acquisition of wealth while the last stage, namely Sanyasa period signifies the inevitability of reaching the state of Jnana yoga. Thus we find that both material wealth and spiritual wealth are like two sides of the same coin. When the basic attitude towards understanding the search and attainment of the two is vitiated, one struggles to attain both. Prarabdha karma being the facilitator for this, the quest and attainment of these two wealth is indicated in a horoscope as Dhana and Jnana yogas. The basic attitude is signified by Moon. In this article we will see how the Dhana and Jnana yogas are like the 2 sides of the same coin and the role of Moon in the creation of these yogas. A man’s life is dominated by four Purusharthas. The right attitude in Dharma, Artha and Kama would help one attain Moksha. The horoscope therefore signifies how these four are manifest as a result of Prarabdha karma. It can be depicted as follows. 7 6

The above illustration shows the relationship between the opposite bhavas. For our analysis, we will take up Dhana and Vyaya bhavas. It can be seen that the two crucial houses for Dhana and Jnana happen to be the immediate neighbours of the 1st house that signifies oneself. The Dhana bhava (2nd bhava) signifies material wealth while the Vyaya bhava (12th bhava) signifies spiritual wealth. By

(A Tribute on the occasion of 150th Birth Anniversary of Swami Vivekananda) [The Sun plays an important role in both Jyotisha and Vastu. Solar energy is eco friendly and can indeed aid in bettering the physical, mental and spiritual health of the existing and coming generations. - Chief Editor ]

NCIENT HINDU FAITH has evolved since time immemorial and its essence has been captured in Ramayana, Mahabharatha, Bhagavatha, Bhagavad Gita and various other epics written by eminent rishis and munis. The support structure for the hindu faith has come from great saints like Sri Sankaracharya, Sri Ramanuja, Sri Madhwacharya and a host of others across the length and breadth of the nation. Various mutts, vedic schools and religious establishments over the ages have also contributed for the welfare of both hindu faith and devotees. The temple has been a major dimension of the hindu faith. As India is largely an agricultural country, the temple was the meeting place for the people in a village. The kings (Krishnadevarayya, the Mysore and Travancore Maharajas and many others, ) gave economic support to Temples with lands and grants for the welfare of Temple Staff and for upkeep of the Temples which is seen to this day. Devotees also made their contributions. Music, dance, literature, poetry, prose etc., and a socio-cultural way of life have been deeply influenced by the Hindu faith over the ages. In recent times, Swami Vivekananda was instrumental in modernizing Hinduism and adapt this ‘way of life’ to changing times during British Rule. After Independence, there has been a major change in the form of industrialization and urbanization and the running of temples has been done by Trusts, Mutts etc., under the overall supervision of the State. The attendance has also increased in many leading temples as they have become centers of tourism, devotion and socio-cultural activities. Additionally, a multitude of media channels are meeting the spiritual needs via discourses and telecasts of temple events directly to the viewers homes. Due to globalization, thousands of Indians have migrated from India to different parts of the World – America to Australia. Many Indian migrants have built temples all over the world. The general awareness of Hindu Faith has increased manifold globally. Ack : Internet Web-Sites and Newspaper articles 12 SEPTEMBER 2013

This article is about further modernization of temples and the need for welfae measures to the temple staff. The author dedicates this thesis to Swami Vivekananda who worked relentlessly for the social, cultural and spiritual renaissance of India. Solar Power for Temples There are over a Lakh and twenty five thousand Temples in southern India spread across Karnataka (35000), Andhra Pradesh (40,000), Tamilnadu (36000) and Kerala (15000) that are maintained by the Muzarrai or the Endowments Ministries. This department looks after the overall administration of these temples. The temples are categorized based on their incomes for administrative purpose. There are big, medium and small temples. Some of them are administered by Boards and Trusts. These temples over the ages have deeply influenced the literature, poetry, prose, music ( classical / folk / film ), dance ( classical / folk ), tradition & culture of of these states. Electric power consumption in temples is a major aspect in the functioning of the temples. Decorative lights are also used extensively in all festivals that consume much power. This is in addition to the daily consumption of electricity for lights, pumps, fans, air conditioners and computers. Solar Power (and other non-conventional approaches) find success stories in some of the temples that have adopted the eco friendly energy. Solar / Wind Power in Tirupathi The temple of Lord Venkateswara in Tirumala has begun to go the greener way. Given the mammoth number of pilgrims visiting and staying there, power requirement is high. There are many restaurants, cottages, hotels, etc. The temple complex is almost like a small city (ruled by the Lord). The power requirement of the temple town is put around 350 lakh units annually. The management has set up six wind turbines with a production capacity of one megawatt each on the Kakula Konda hill ranges contributing to around 120 lakh units of power which is THE ASTROLOGICAL eMAGAZINE

First of all the ventures you have undertaken do not progress. It may partially be due to finance and partly to technical reasons. When you do the work very few people sympathize with you and the higher ups keep mum. The on-lookers disdainfully brush aside and even denigrate your genuine claims. This isolation which engulfs you is quite disappointing. At the same time those who do business find that their goods however good they be do not catch the attention of the market. This may be partly due to the fact that many do not patronize you. Even your techniques of advertisement are not attractive. At times there may be stunning opposition. Even in social organizations people conveniently forget the service you did earlier. Your charisma has faded. New faces SEPTEMBER 2013
