Proper chanting of Vedic Mantras It is a tradition in the Sringeri Jagadguru Mahasamsthanam that the presiding Acharya usually performs the Sharada Chandramoulishwara Puja every night, whether He is in Sringeri or is on a Vijaya Yatra. Our Guru, Jagadguru Sri Abhinava Vidyatirtha Mahaswamiji, who travelled extensively all over India for propagating Dharma, was in the midst of one of His many Vijaya Yatras. During the Chatur Veda Seva at the end of the Chandramoulishwara Puja, a common man of high standing in the society chanted the Yajur Veda amidst the assembly of Vedic scholars. However, there were several apa-swaras (incorrect intonations) in his rendition. A renowned Vedic scholar in the assembly abruptly and loudly called for the man to stop chanting. The entire assembly was stunned by such strong and public expression of disapproval. When questioned, the Vedic scholar responded that he was not intimidated by the man's societal standing. Stating that his singular duty as a Vedic practitioner was to safeguard the Vedas and therefore stop anyone who resorted to faulty intonation, the scholar declared that he would never allow anyone, regardless of his position or stature, to disregard the importance of correct chanting of the Vedas. Such is the greatness of the Vedas that it is the duty of all who have studied the Vedas to ensure that the Vedas are chanted properly. Every Vedic Purohit must also remember that any error in chanting Mantras on his part will affect the person who is getting a particular ceremony done -
cev$ees nerve: mJejlees JeCe&lees Jee efceL³eeÒe³egÊeÀes ve leceLe&ceen~ me JeeiJeýees ³epeceeveb efnveefmle ³eLesvêMe$eg: mJejleesHejeOeeled ~~ “me JeeiJeýees ³epeceeveb nefveefmle” - indicates that a mispronunciation or an akshara chanted with the wrong Swara affects the Yajamana (person getting the ceremony done) adversely. So, Purohits must take utmost care to chant the Mantras without any errors. Our ancestors have done yeoman service by passing on the Vedic teaching and we must be indebted to them:
veeO³eeHeef³e<³eved efveieceeved ÞecesCe GHeeO³ee³eueeskeÀe: ³eefo efMe<³eJeiee&ved ~ efveJexoJeeob efkeÀue efveefJe&leeveced GJeealeueb nvle leoeçYeefJe<³eled ~~ - If the Vedas and the Karmas enjoined in the Vedas exist today, it is because the teachers of the past have taken great pains to hand them down to the succeeding generations. When parents perform Upanayanam for their child, it is imperative to ensure that the child learns the Sandhya Vandanam with the right pronunciation and proper Swaras. May all tread along the path enjoined in the Vedas, engage in their Svadharma and attain Shreyas.

The Moon's Influence on Personal Life A Correspondent
T
'HE occupancy of the Moon in a certain sign of the zodiac constitutes a "personal cycle" for you of approximately two and one-half days. For Luna rules the personal life and the rapid fluctuations to which such matters as are ruled by the sign through which the Moon progresses. Were it not for the fluctuating influence of the Moon there would be no ebb and flow of the tide and no change in our personal experiences and moods. Wounds of emotional conflicts would never heal. The tears of sorrow would never cease flowing and everything in life would be at a standstill. The law of life is "change"; nothing is quite as certain as the "changelessness of change". The wheel of life is in constant motion ; the spoke that is uppermost will be under. As Carlyle put it: "To-day is not yesterday. We ourselves change. How then can our works and thoughts if they are always to be the fittest continue always the same? Change indeed is painful yet ever needful." It is the Moon's job to see that earth mortals have the needed changes, for sorrow must alternate with joy, growth with decay, life with death. Thus only can life remain in a balanced condition. Your cherished" hopes may become discarded ambitions; your loves of to-day may become your enemies to tomorrow: yesterday's confirmed bachelor is led to the altar by seme fair damsel to-morrow and a racketeering criminal may reform and become a zealous evangelist! All due to the changes which the pale fingers of the Goddess of Night fashion in the lives and hearts of mortal men. Naturally the house position of the Moon is also important as house and sign positions blend themselves to bring about events of a corresponding nature. But in an article of limited scope it is sufficient that we consider the transit of the Moon into a sign. Let us now begin with the zodiacal signs in order and list the possible trend in your life when the Moon occupies a respective sign for two and one-half years which constitutes a lunar cycle for you. When the Moon passes into Aries (which should be your Janma Rasi) the martian forces of this sign become evident The astrological emagazine
in your life. You begin to think of changes and as thoughtconditions always precede the materialization you will absolutely have changes in your life both in environment and become more aggressive. Aries is a mental sign and as a rule persons in this cycle read, study and improve themselves mentally. It is a sign in which the "worm turns" The timid employee suddenly becomes courageous enough to ask for a raised and the henpecked husband will assert his rights ! The cycle of Mars and Aries will give you courage, fortitude and vim and desirous of getting out of the rut. With the Moon in Taurus (your Janma Rasi), your personal life will gravitate much arcund money matters, and you may have a money problem to solve or wrestle with. When the Moon enters Gemini (your Janma Rasi) you take on the mercurial qualities of Mercury. You may take up some sideline, for this is a dual sign. It favours writing, selling and correspondence, lecturing and teaching. How different from Taurus is this sign ! You will be out of the romantic mood and read and study more. You will make more short trips, write more letters and your mind will be much engrossed with affairs of your kith and kin. As the Moon slips from Gemini into Cancer (which should be your Janma Rasi) there is usually transfers of real estate and property matters. In the cycle of Cancer the home and its affairs come to the fore. You may purchase a house and home, make changes and removals in home. You will come more before the public. For if you have a good horoscope you will get lots of publicity. The mother and her influence may be paramount in your life, and some anxiety may be felt for her. Now comes the cycle of Leo (your Janma Rasi) and the Sun. This is the sign of speculation and investment and yeur personal life will ccme into touch with such matters. Even if you are the most conservative person in the world, some little speculation, some interest or concern about an investment will come into your life. If you are free and open to attraction it means a paramount heart interest and December 2015

A Simple Method of
Answering Questions A Correspondent
P
rasna or Horary Astrology has several methods which enable us to solve some of the most pressing and important problems pertaining to the daily transactions of life. The most comprehensive work is of course Jinendramala and the author has given several clues whereby one can successfully probe into the future. Then we have the Ramala Sastra developed to considerable perfection by the Yavanacharyas. In this article we shall deal with a simple method of answering questions of everyday importance. By the use of the following method many questions can be answered quickly, chiefly as to the success or failure of a given enterprise. It may be mentioned for the information of the reader that if the horary chart is also cast and in conjunction with this if the following method is employed then the chances of failure are nil or absolutely feeble. There are two charts or Chakras to be considered, viz., the Naisargika Chakra (Permanent chart) and Tatkalika Chakra, (Temporary Chart). The Naisargika Chakra suggests that irrespective of the day of question, the eight cardinal points (dik or direction) are governed by the 8 planets as follows.
East—Sun; South East—Venus; South— Mars; South West— Rahu; West —Saturn; North West—Moon; NorthMercury and North East —Jupiter. This can be represented in a chart as follows : — E Sun

Then we have the Tatkalika Chakra, according to which the eight cardinal points are presided over by different planets on different week days. Thus on Monday Venus rules the East while Jupiter rules the same direction on Tuesday. The following table will clear the matter.

Blending of Astrological Concepts for Prediction
D
r. T. S. Vasan, eminent and well known scholar of astrology delivered the Sri Surya Prakash Memorial Endowment Lecture – Blending of Astrological Concepts for Prediction – at Indian Institute of World Culture, Bangalore on 6th November 2015. He took the very attentive audience in the fully packed auditorium on a virtual excursion of his experiences in life. He narrated how interactions with experts helped him to enhance his knowledge and exhorted avid students to emulate him. Dr. Vasan gave a volley of hints to the astrology enthusiasts to help them to understand and unravel the mysteries of any horoscope, in a jiffy. He laid stress on the Vargottama Dasa and Parivarthana concepts with good examples and emphasised the fact that astrology is not mere fortune telling tool. The study of astrology, he said, can enhance one’s personality and added that Shadvargas and Shadchakras have similar traits. There was a need to follow the correct panchanga, viz., Driganitha, Dr. Vasan said. Superficial studies of astrology may not be of any help either to the practitioner or to the client. All the five limbs of the panchanga, like tithi -vaara- nakshatra - yoga- karana have to be examined. Dr. Vasan laid stress on finding the tatwa quality of each birth. The placement of the tatwa graha in the horoscope can reveal many hidden facts. He said, he being born in akasha tatwa got the interest in acquiring knowledge in esoteric subjects like astrology. Teja tatwa borns will be after power glory while Apa tatwa borns will have creative or artistic inclinations. Likewise he brought out the importance of Yogi - Avayogi and Dagdha rasi concepts. For example he said that Mars, is an Avayogi, transiting the eighth can bring in an accident. He narrated his experiences with a great Budha naadi Sreenivasa Sastry and Gopala Krishna Rao. Accurate predictions can be made through a knowledge of stellar astrology because rasi positions of planets can give only superficial results. In the process, he explained how he met Meena 2 and how his son Raja at Hyderabad has now made many advanced studies is stellar astrology,

like the Jeeva Sareera principles. Stressing the importance of assessing dispositor in rasi or navamsa, he explained how each bhava will have to be studied.
Dr. T. S. Vasan An intelligent astrologer can explore any horoscope even with a small tool of a yoga. For example the Parijata yoga can bring in the results of a Raja yoga. Dr. Vasan explained how this happens when the lord of the navamsa occupied by the lord of the rasi in which the lagna-lord is posted joins a trine, quadrant, and his own or exaltation place. He told that if the dispositor of the navamsa where the seventh lord is posited goes to any Dusthana, it can create havoc to the bhava. Interspersing his talk with his varied experiences he gave a great deal of useful hints as to how any horoscope could be judged . He said that he learnt the intricacies of Chandrakala Nadi from Mr. Patel and stressed the importance of major transits. He said that the meetings with so many scholars, who were humble and discussing with them only improved his knowledge. He laid importance to the study of transits. Taking his case as an example he explained how he got a daughter when Saturn, his 5th lord exalted in navamsa, joined Venus, the dispositor, in transit. He stressed the factor that the Navamsa is a treasure house - Bhava suchaka navamsa. He felt sad that nobody knew what the Pushkara navamsa was.
