Benedictory Message from our Kulaguru Jagadguru Shankaracharya Sri Sri Bharati Tirtha Mahaswamiji, Dakshinamnaya Sri Sharada Peetham, Sringeri

A Purposeful Day Today people usually refer to certain days as special or as red-letter days. Often times, they regard such days as special when they have met a famous personality. In the case of institutions, it is considered as a golden day, when a foundation stone is laid or a new project is launched. However there is a verse that states what our ancestors considered to be a special or purposeful day: कृतग ोदक ानं ुतभारतस थं । अिचता ुतपादा ं िदनं क शता रं ।। (That day when you have had the opportunity to be in a holy place, that day when you have heard the noble stories related to God, and that day when the Lotus Feet of God have been worshipped, is considered better than (even) a hundred years of Brahma.) Our forefathers felt complete if they were able to visit a holy place. They used to await the day when they could get the opportunity to go to Kashi. Their thoughts were, “Would I be able to go to Kashi? Would I be able to complete a holy dip in the Ganga? Would I have the Darshan of Lord Vishweshwara?” They felt that their lives would be purposeful if they were able to visit Kashi at least once in their lifetime. Similarly, a day on which Puranas and Itihasas such as Mahabharata, Ramayanam, Bhagavatam, Shiva Puranam, Devi Puranam, Markandeya Puranam etc., were recited, was considered an auspicious day. Also, a day on which Puja to Ishwara was offered with supreme devotion was considered to be a purposeful day. We think that our life is getting purposeful as we keep making progress in the worldly life. What we tend to achieve in the worldly life is only enough for progress in this world. All the progress that we seemed to have made in this world will not be of any help in the next world (para-loka) or during a rebirth. Whatever Dharma (or) Ishwara Puja we do in this birth will benefit us during a rebirth. May everyone understand this, make their days purposeful and attain Shreyas.

EDITOR’S NOTE Dear Readers,

Astrology is a complex science that uses several methods to arrive at best possible future outcomes, popularly known as predictions. S N Tekur in an elaborate article, demonstrates the possibility of using the Kalman Filter Methodology to improve the quality of astrological predictions. It is essentially an algorithm (an optimal estimator) that can be mechanized and tuned to give excellent estimates of the future states of a complex system in a noisy environment even when disturbed with external inputs. Read on to learn more about this unique concept.

As we commence the new year 2021, the world is still healing with the turbulences that the past year left us with. It was felt across industries and businesses, touching the core. The stock market was not left either. It was rather a roller coaster in the market. What started as a humble beginning in early 2020, the Sensex reached lowest at 24K. And then the market took a complete U-turn. Stock across most industries started rising, at an accelerated pace. In 8 months, the market rose by nearly 100%. Raman Suprajarama, in the cover story presents stock market predictions for 2021 and dwells into various industries. It is interesting to note how the planetary positions impact the growth or degrowth of an industry. It is a must read if you are anywhere close to planning your investments this year.

Stellium is a planetary combined energy focused on the position and the planets involved in the sign where the Stelium occurs. The Stellium in the sign of Capricorn has resulted in almost seven planets occupying the chara bhava. R S Maniam presents his analysis on how this Stellium will affect American leadership and some world events. He concludes that the 2021 Stellium will be full of mystery with long term effects. The pandemic and Jupiter-Saturn post conjunction period will be a period of turbulance.

In the January 2021 edition of our K Suresh, shared his wisdom about precisely predicting the influence of planets using Lagnas called Ashtakavarga System. He continues the article, where he goes on to explain the various Rekhas and its implication on Vastu principles and house planning. The scribe also provides pointers to look at various aspects to consider in individual horoscopes using the Ashtakavarga method.

We end up wih the monthly features with the most awaited predictions for your Moon signs, Ephemeris, Calendar and Panchanga for the month of February.

Dr Jayasree Saranathan, in continuation of her research paper, presents Part 4 of the problems associated with western concept of precession based on Milankovitch theory, and provides information on three cycles of the Indic thought, and the band of Tropic of Cancer.

INDICATORS OF ADDICTION PATTERNS IN A HOROSCOPE

HOROSCOPE ANALYSIS

Krishna Darshan

Krishna Darshan teaches Yoga, Vedanta, Jyotisha and other branches of vedic knowledge at the Sivananda Ashrams since 1986. He is a Jyotisha tutor, certified by the ACVA in the U.S. levels 1 and 2, and also by CVA with the titles “Jyotish Visharada” and “Jyotish Kovid”.

Understanding the Astrology of Addiction According to Vedic teachings, anyone who has not yet achieved final liberation (Moksha) is an addict to the world itself, through the attachment to the objects of the senses and their gratification. The mind, through deep seated habits and patterns, samskaras and vasanas, can’t let go of the objects of its attachment.

One of the observable patterns is that either the Lagna lord, or the Moon or the Sun or other significant karakas, are afflicted by being in a dusthana house or in conjunction or aspect of a dusthana lord. In this context, the 6th house represents: Difficulties and diseases, stress, tension, enmity, fighting strong opposition forces.

Until one is not able to destroy those mental patterns of attachment, everyone is an addict in this world and bonded to the wheel of Samsara, which is full of pain.

The positive side of it is the study of health and healing methods, focusing on healthy lifestyle and therapeutics, study and practice of Ayurveda, becoming a healer, serving the people in distress, doing physical exercise, yoga asanas, those are also related to this house.

Taking this into consideration, we also have to see that some addictions more than others can become extremely destructive to the welfare of a person and pull him/her into a downward whirlpool into the darkest regions of the mind. Some people destroy their physical and mental health, money, family, marriage, career, reputation, responsibilities and even their civil freedom because of the incapacity to overcome the intense addiction.

The 8th house represents the deep subconscious mind, where everyone’s hidden thoughts, bad karmas, deep seated fears, death or calamity and the process of karmic purgation dwell. The positive side or antidote of this house is the study and understanding of the mind’s deep processes, study of psychology and Raja yoga, and doing introspective practices to bring the awareness into the unconscious or sub-conscious areas of the mind. Best practices are regular meditation, yoga, study of Jyothisha.

The 4 goals of life or Purusharthas which are Dharma, Artha, Kama and Moksha can be ruined by the consequence of an uncontrollable addiction. But there is always the possibility of recovery. Mental patterns and behaviors can be changed!

The 12th house

Identifying and recognizing the addiction pattern is the first step to help someone in the process of recovery. A Jyothisha practitioner can be of great help to someone going through this problem. Once we identify the astrological factors involved in the addictive pattern, we can suggest helpful astrological and spiritual remedies that can make a big difference in the recovery process.

Among the Dusthana houses, this 12th house is the one especially related to addictions in most cases.

Main Factors in the Birth Chart

This house represents the desire to free oneself from suffering, to escape the pain caused by the limitations of being in a physical realm and tied to a body, which is constantly decaying, and to a mind and thinking patterns they cannot control.

Dusthanas - 6th, 8th and 12th are the houses of suffering. Each of those also have a positive potential, something that becomes the antidote to the suffering it causes, and this is something very important to consider in the process of recovery and healing.

The placement of the lagna lord, Moon, Sun or a strong malefic like Mars, Saturn or Rahu in the 12th house, or conjunct the 12th lord can be one of the indications of propensity for addictions, especially if other factors of the chart point in the same direction.

The role of the Dusthana Houses

COVER STORY

STOCK MARKET ASTROLOGY PREDICTIONS 2021 Raman Suprajarama

The stock market after a bump seem to be on the path of recovery. As the new year begins, Moneycontrol's Analyst Poll indicates that Sensex would cross 50K (currently 47k) and Nifty 50 would cross 14.5K (currently 14k). According to a Reuters poll of equity strategists overwhelmingly expected corporate earnings to return roughly to pre-pandemic levels within a year. A lot is based on the recent progress made on the Coronavirus vaccine development. This is in tandem with the global markets as well which are also on a path to remarkable recovery.

“By observing excessive rain, meteor, rod, halo, eclipse, mock-sun and such other portents on the newMoon and full-Moon days and also at the Sun’s entrance into a new sign of the Zodiac every month, one should predict fluctuations in the prices of commodities. These portents observed on other days forebode sufferings of kings through wars or bloodshed.”

The year 2020 witnessed quite a different trend in stock market. The year began rather soberly, and the Coronavirus pandemic hit us. Shockwaves were sent across the markets, and the indices tumbled. Sensex reached a low of 24K, almost 40% lower than the beginning of the year. And then the market took a complete U-turn. Stock across most industries started rising, at an accelerated pace. In 8 months, the market rose by nearly 100%. Financial pundits attribute many factors to the rebound of stocks - fiscal stimulus, improving economic data, vaccine progress, better-than-expected September quarter earnings and central banks' moves to shore up the economy with ample liquidity, etc.

The rise and fall of stocks are directly proportional to the demand and supply that it has. Economic techniques can gauge to what extent the prices of the stock can change based on previous data, but they cannot indicate the likely change that could occur to a particular security at some point in the future. A word to the wise is that past performance of a particular stock is no indication that it will perform equally well in the future. At the same time, these models study the Systematic and Unsystematic risks associated, economic environment etc., but have not taken into account the likely human emotional temperament, which also influences the price. Here, Astrology comes to the rescue. By observing the planetary positions and their geometrical relationships in the celestial atmosphere, one can estimate the likely changes in the securities that can take place.

Sector wise, Technology leads the rise with almost 100% growth. This was obvious since Rahu who denotes Technology was in his most auspicious state. He was exalted in the sign of his best friend Mercury, in Gemini. On the other hand, Ketu was in the enemy’s house and destroying. Ketu denotes Power, Telecom, Media and Entertainment businesses and Hospitality. Each of these sectors had a negative growth or decline of about 50%. Healthcare and retailers had about 60% growth each. Healthcare is denoted jointly by Jupiter and Mars. Jupiter was in his own house in the beginning and later went into debilitation. Mars on the other hand started his journey from Scorpio at the beginning of the year, and then progressed all the way to Aries by end of the year. Both are his own houses giving a positive push for the Healthcare industry.

Following sloka from Brihat Samhita will make it clearer:

The Moon, full or in conjunction with the Sun being conjoined with and/or aspected by benefics, promotes immediately the prices of articles belonging to the particular sign occupied by her. Similarly, the Sun conjoined with and aspected by malefics, destroys the prices of commodities belonging to that Sign. Thus, one should make predictions, good and bad, regarding the price of materials, having duly comprehended the objects belonging to the several signs of the Zodiac.

What is interesting to note is that while the sectors that were jointly held by Jupiter and Mars performed quite well, the individual sectors did not do well. Finance is denoted by Jupiter and thanks to his debility the respective financial stocks fell by about 20%. Similarly, Mars denotes Automobile industry, and they fell by about 22% as well.

The Chart of Indian Economy

A chart cast at the time of Jupiter entering Capricorn will give us considerable clue as to how the markets will perform in the first half of 2021. Jupiter moved to Capricorn on November 10, 2020 at around 23.28 mins IST. Cancer ascendant rises at 12 degrees 58 minutes in New Delhi, India.

4. Location of kitchen in the home: Find the maximum Rekha of Mars in the Bhava. Locate your Kitchen in that direction of the house, which is indicated by that Bhava.

Some important observations on Ashtakavarga are as follows: In any Ashtakavarga chart, there can be maximum 8 Rekhas and minimum of NIL in any house.

5. The bedroom in a house can be made in the direction where the maximum Rekhas are present in the Bhava contributed by Venus.

1. Add the Rekhas of Mesha, Simha and Dhanus, which represent East. In the same manner, find the total of Vrshabha, Kanya and Makara-the South; Mithuna, Tula and Kumbha-the West; Kataka, Vrschika and Meena-the North. The highest number out of these four is the auspicious direction for the native. According to Prasnamarga, Mesha and Vrshabha represent the East, Mithuna the South East, Kataka and Simha-the South, Kanya-the South West, Tula and Vrshchika - the West, Dhanus - the North West, Makara and Kumbha-the North, and Meena-the North East. This is fixed zodiac and used for construction of houses/ buildings or undertaking of a long-standing nature. In the movable zodiac, the ascendant represents the East, 4th represents North, 7th is West and 10th house is South.

6. Find the maximum Rekhas of the Moon and the Bhava indicated. You can find water in that direction of the house or construct the water collecting sump or well in that direction. 7. Construction of toilet or servant rooms or drainage can be built in the direction, where the maximum Ashtakavarga points of Saturn are indicated in that direction of a Bhava. 8. In the same manner, the study room can be located in the direction of a home, where the maximum Rekhas are contributed by Mercury in that Bhava. Now the readers can understand that the general Vastu for constructing a home is not a one-size-fits-all, and that the benefits can be fully reaped, only if the various parts of the home are located in the correct direction/places as indicated by the strength of the planets according to the Ashtakavarga system derived from their own birth chart. So, the customized/ personalized home can be constructed effectively by using the individual Jataka / Ashtakavarga.

2. The place of worship in the home can be fixed in the direction, where maximum Rekhas are ascertained by adding those trines. (Example: Mesha, Simha and Dhanus representing East, etc, as explained earlier) or in the place where the maximum Rekhas are represented by the Sun in the Ashtakavarga chart.

9.

3. Keep the valuables and safety lockers in the home, where the direction is indicated by Jupiter position in the Bhava, with maximum Rekhas for their growth and prosperity.

10. In the same way, when a Bhava has only one Rekha (good) and 7 Bindus (adverse), then the

When a Bhava has 7 Rekhas (favourable) and 1 Bindu (adverse), find out which planet gives the Bindu, and that planet while transiting the Kakshya produces bad effects.

eastward.iii Around the year 2000, Earth's spin axis took an abrupt turn toward the east and is now drifting almost twice as fast as before, at a rate of almost 7 inches (17 centimeters) a year. "It's no longer moving toward Hudson Bay, but instead toward the British Isles," reports Adhikari, a scientist from NASA who has presented quite a few research papers on this topic.iv Analysis of a century long data showed that the axis had abruptly drifted from 80th Meridian West to the central meridian around the year 2005.

The western concept of precession based on Milankovitch theory proposes (1) eccentricity of the earth’s orbit in cycles of 100,000 years, (2) obliquity in the angle of earth’s axial rotation varying between 22.10 and 24.50 in cycles of 41,000 years and (3) axial precession of the earth in a cycle of 25,771.5 years. All these three motions together cause variations on the amount of sunlight falling on the earth, particularly at latitudes between 30 and 60 degrees north or south of the equator which eventually offer an explanation for Ice age conditions. However with more researches coming up day by day, many unresolved questions are coming to the fore.

2. Analysis by NASA scientists showed that the axial drift is guided by internal dynamics of the earth, mainly three factors, namely isostatic rebound of landforms formerly under ice sheets, melting of the ice sheets and mantle convection – each having equal weightage in influencing the axial drift.vvi The melt water impact is found to have broader implications for the study of past and future climate of the earth. This is supported by satellites-based measurements too.viii

Problems with Milankovitch Theory The ‘100,000-year problem’ of Eccentricity The cycle of eccentricity of 100,000 years is found unrelated to insolation in many research. This is recognized as the ‘100,000-year problem’.i Suppose the earth’s orbit had drifted to a new position in 100,000 years, the amount of sunlight falling on the hemispheres could vary causing glacial or de-glacial conditions. Such an event has not been detected, though some other events such as global carbon cycles were noticed.ii Periodicity of Ice Ages is not satisfactorily explained by the orbital eccentricity of 100,000-year cycle. (The corresponding cycle deduced from Surya Siddhanta has a span of 144,000 years)

Despite these constraints coming in the way of support to Milankovitch’s obliquity theory, there are climatic records in support of 41,000-year cycle. This will be discussed while validating Indic cycles. Doubts on the Current Model of Precession

Axial Tilt or Obliquity Governed by Internal Dynamics of the Earth The obliquity cycle of 41,000 years becomes untenable in the wake of evidence of absence of axial drift. Most important findings are listed here:

The third cycle is that of the precession of the equinoxes of roughly around 26,000 years. The Lunisolar influence in addition to planetary influence on the earth is supposed to cause the axial precession, leading to equinoctial precession. With more revelations, it is known that there is no luni-solar effect on the earth.

1. The earth’s spin axis is no longer precessing, i.e. not moving westward, but had started moving

KALMAN FILTERING AND ASTROLOGY S N Tekur Shirdi Nath Tekur is a retired aerospace engineer from HAL and an adviser with Tata Consultancy Services. After obtaining Jyothish Visharad from ICAS, he has been teaching astrology at ICAS, Bangalore, and later, Bharatiya Jyothisha Sansthan for over 25 years. sntekur@gmail.com

What is the Kalman Filter?

More simply, we can say that to have the accurate response of the system for any given input, the state holds the information related to the history of the system. It is a vector term, thus the various variables that constitute state vector are known as state variables.

For the uninitiated, the Kalman Filter is an optimal estimation algorithm. The Kalman Filter can be used at any place where there is a large amount of uncertain information. The Filter can be applied to make an educated guess about what the system is going to do next.

(For a human being, the state defines who you are now. The result of all previous experiences is summarised in your current state. We keep changing all the time based on what we encounter, and the major events have much influence, hence the term ‘life changing event’)

It is no surprise then that the Kalman Filter finds useful application in aircraft navigation, robotics, computer vision systems, signal processing, econometrics, target tracking and similar fields of study. The Kalman filter concept uses state space techniques to define a system and matrix methods for an elegant, iterative solution.

Here x(t) denotes the state vector while x1(t), x2(t), etc. are the state variables that are forming state vector.

Kalman Filter’s Origins

A Hungarian, R E Kalman, who studied at MIT/Columbia invented the Filter in 1960, as a recursive solution for the linear filtering problem for discrete data.

State Model Consider a linear system with two inputs u1(t) and u2(t), while two outputs y1(t) and y2(t).

Kalman Filtering became popular due to good results, convenience in online real-time processing and no requirement for storage and use of historical data of the process.

Suppose the system has two states x1(t) and x2(t).

It is essentially an algorithm (an optimal estimator) that can be mechanized and tuned to give excellent estimates of the future states of a complex system in a noisy environment even when disturbed with external inputs.

The individual’s current life status is defined by the MIMO (multiple input-multiple output) system as a set of state variables, the inputs are the various circumstances while the outputs are his reactions to the situation. In order to define the system accurately, the past experiences need to be studied and the state variables with their correlations and dependencies have to be expressed. Once a static picture is established the behavior/performance or results of an actual life situation can be simulated and an outcome predicted. The Kalman Filter adds an algorithm which accounts for the dynamic changes in the relationship between intrinsic parameters and external influences and is able to provide a more accurate prediction of the future.

However, good results are dependent on considerable preliminary planning and a good knowledge of the system dynamics, error characteristics of the sensors, correlation between the states, elaborate modeling of the system and an intimate knowledge of system behavior under various disturbances and random inputs. What is a State? It represents every smallest past information of the system in order to predict future response. Basically, a state separates the future i.e., the response of the system from the past. February 2021
