These days, we find huge buildings come up as residential and commercial complexes with orientation not to the cardinal directions. I have always stressed the importance of orientation of a building to the cardinal directions. The first and foremost object of the Sthapathi (architect) is to draw a plan of construction based on proper orientation. This article describes the method of finding the cardinal directions for proper orientation of a building. Sanku Sthapana is commonly misunderstood as laying of the foundation stone. Sanku Sthapana is not a religious ritual but a totally scientific act of arriving at the true cardinal directions. The Sanku (gnomon) is placed in the centre of the site and its shadow before noon and after noon are marked to arrive at the directions.

Various Sanku sizes. At the top, the Sanku tapers to a point A square of four hasta (6 feet) is drawn around the centre. This square is levelled with the help of water. The installation is recommended in Uttarayana (when the path of the Sun is towards the North) or in Dakshinayana (when the path of the Sun is towards South). The day selected should be a beautiful sunny day when the Sun is free from spots.

The word Panchanga (Panch = five, Anga = limbs) means five measurements of energy (light) based on the movement of two luminaries of Jyotish in the sky, i.e., Sun (Surya) and Moon (Chandra). As the five energy measurements in Panchanga can reveal various influencing forces on a given day, Panchanga has been widely used for electional astrology. However, Personal Panchanga (PP) based on an individual’s natal chart remarkably contribute in understanding the functioning of that given individual in earthly plane as it is the ladder through which an astrologer can climb and assess “On a given day at a particular time, what kind of a bond is established between the planetary positions and five soli-lunar measurements to shape his/her life pattern?” As Sun and Moon are the only luminaries in the planetary cabinet, the comparison of PP with natal chart indicates to what extent the light of life for an individual is obscured (Sutton, 2007).

A short description of each of these limbs is given below. Dina: Vedic week day. Unlike the consideration of a day in the modern times, that is, from midnight 12.00 AM to forthcoming midnight 12.00 AM, vedic weekday is calculated from Sunrise to Sunrise. For instance, imagine that a person was born on Friday at 3.00 AM and sunrise occurred at 5.45 AM, he is considered to be born on Friday as per modern convention but according vedic system, the vedic weekday of birth is Thursday (Sunrise to Sunrise). The component Dina in a PP is connected to the element ‘Agni’ (Sutton, 2007). The element Agni is connected to the physical expression of energy (Frawley, 1992). The Dina reveals how the incarnated Soul wants to pay off its Karmic debts by utilizing the physical energy in this material world.
