EDITOR’S NOTE Dear Readers, Wishing you a very happy and prosperous 2024.

Karmic debts, and true dignity by Kshanati Nakshatra. He explores the positions of Ketu and Rahu in various Nakshatras. Providing insights into Samskaras, Karmic Debts, and the authentic nature of Upagrahas, Rahu, and Ketu, it sets the stage for a distinctive approach in understanding their significance.

Vedic Astrology is one of the foremost sciences available for the benefit of mankind. It easily surpasses modern scientific inquiry and spirit. An idea or method for it to be accepted scientifically typically involves making observations, forming a hypothesis, conducting experiments, gathering data, and drawing conclusions based on evidence. Our beloved Chief Editor, Bangalore Niranjan Babu, sheds light on the scientific principles of Vedic Architecture aka Vastu Shastra. In his article, he shows how the construction principles and tenets mentioned in the epics of Ramayana and Mahabharata, scriptures like Brihat Samhita, Mayamata, Manasara, Surya Siddhantha, Agama shastras, and more, take into consideration the various creative, preserving, and destructive energies present in the cosmos and use them to design spaces that improve the quality of human life. He also showcases salient features found in temples across India and shows how Vedic Architecture is a harmonious blend of functionality, aesthetics, sustainability, and cultural sensitivity that enhances spiritual and materialistic experiences while adapting to changing needs and times.

Panchangam: The Mathematical Interface by Dr. S Archna Murthy is a continuation of series on the measurement of time. By explaining the meaning of Panchangam, its five limbs, usage, components, mathematical basis, importance of local Panchangam and the brief evolution of western almanacs she hopes that we will gain a good understanding of the Panchangam and its value in Indian culture. Despite technological advancements, unpredictable climatic upheavals persist. The 2015 South India floods, attributed to extreme El Niño conditions, revealed the complexity of nature. As the world braces for a late 2023 El Niño period, Muthu Vijayan Elango explores the impact of El Niño on 2024 rainfall patterns across the globe, highlighting the valuable insights that astrology can provide in navigating this climatic phenomenon.

Today, everyone looks at India as an upcoming superpower. In 2023, the Indian government initiated key economic reforms, including asset monetization and controlled public spending for deficit reduction. Targeted subsidy rationalization, improved tax administration, and anti-corruption measures were implemented. To curb inflation, the Reserve Bank of India raised interest rates, and supply chain initiatives were introduced. The bigger question now, is, will India achieve the status of being a Superpower in 2024? Read the cover story by our Senior Editor Raman Suprajarama who delves into the significant planetary events of 2024 and their impact on India and Indians.

Dr. E. S. Neelakantan has provided an astro-portrait of a great visionary patriot – Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose explaining the Yogas and the major life events of his life. His resolute zeal, reflected in his Aries Lagna while Jupiter in the 5th caused obstacles. His unfulfilled dreams, hardships marked by afflicted Sun, and strained family ties, as seen astrologically, depict a resilient leader who didn’t witness India’s freedom but left a significant legacy. This issue includes an article by Gordon Brennan who discusses a new method of Dasa analysis using charts of the UK as an example. This technique is applied after the first whole cycle. The method is simple: maintain the Sun’s position from the original chart when the Dasa cycle concludes and calculate a new cycle, extending Vimshottari by 120 years. This approach, akin to using a Varshaphal chart 120 years later, forms the basis for the subsequent Dasa sequence.

This issue also includes details about important sky events and astrological prognostication for 2024 by Jothida Acharya R. S. Maniam. Through his explanation, he has shown how year 2024 will be the year of strengthening religious faith. Also, Jupiter’s distance from Rahu will be good for finances and eclipse points in Pisces and Virgo suggest potential political fragmentation.

In her article, China’s showoff to the world, Wally Krause shares how Pluto’s transition causes big changes that may not be welcomed by most of the big countries. However, this change is inevitable and China’s resistance to change will be a major cause for its power and economic decline like many in history. Unfortunately, China will not go down alone but will also pull Russia down as a consequence of their trade relationship.

Lalitha Donatella Riback brings in the general predictions for everyone and specific predictions for all signs in 2024. She has provided detailed predictions for career, finances, love, students and health for each sign along with the remedies for Mars, Rahu-Ketu, Saturn, Jupiter and other planets.

Like always, we present the monthly features encompassing forecasts tailored to your Moon sign, an Ephemeris providing celestial position data, and a comprehensive Calendar for the month of January. We encourage you to share your thoughts and suggestions with us at info@astrologicalmagazine.com, as we deeply appreciate and value your input and feedback.

Our senior contributor, Dr. Nemani Venkata Raghunatha Rao has shared his understanding on Rahu in part 1 of the series titled Rahu Centric Theory. Through this series, he will narrate and share examples of his understanding and the reasoning behind that. In this issue, we are starting a monthly series titled Rahu and Ketu Nakshatras: Clues to determining Samskaras, January 2024

India and Sun Maha Dasa

• Throughout the year, Saturn will be positioned in Aquarius. It will undergo a retrograde phase starting in July 2024 and resume forward motion in November 2024.

Indians have experienced the effects of Saturn’s Antar Dasa during the Maha Dasa of the Sun and have now entered the Antar Dasa of Mercury, according to the extended Vimshottari Dasa system. The Sun and Saturn are in conjunction, as are the Sun and Mercury. The Sun symbolizes the ego, self, and identity. Throughout this Maha Dasa, there is a notable boost in national pride and patriotic sentiments, leading to an increased sense of national identity and cultural expression among Indians.

• Jupiter will commence the year in Aries and transition to Taurus in May 2024, where he will remain for the remainder of the year. Jupiter is set to enter retrograde motion in October 2024. • Rahu stays in Pisces for the entire year.

The Sun, as the fourth lord, is positioned in the third house in Cancer Rasi with a Pisces ascendant in Navamsa. This combination indicates shifts in global leadership and authority, influencing power dynamics and establishing a growing influence on the world stage. The Maha Dasa of the Sun commenced in August 2019, coinciding with the historic re-election of Shri Narendra Modi and the NDA with a significant mandate. This Maha Dasa will prevail until November 2026.

• Mars progresses steadily from Capricorn, its exaltation sign, to Cancer, its debilitation sign, throughout the year. Towards the end of the year, in December 2024, Mars initiates retrograde motion while in Cancer. Planetary Conjunctions • Mars and Saturn conjunction in Aquarius during April 2024. January 2024

SPIRITUALITY AND SCIENCE OF DEVALAYA VASTU - 1 Bangalore Niranjan Babu

I am happy to present my thoughts on Vastu Shastra with reference to temples, spirituality and sanctity and Vastu relevance to them. We need to understand that Vastu is equally relevant and applicable to both human habitations - Manushyalaya and divine habitations Devalaya.

techniques. Sandstone and marble are being used in the construction of this 160 feet tall temple.

It is noticed that many of us are not aware of what Vastu Shastra is and how it can benefit in making us spiritually awake. Let us, at first, try to understand the definition and history of Vastu Shastra. It has several definitions. In the Amara Kosa, Vastu is defined as a dwelling. Vastu Shastra is the science of dwelling or architecture and dates back to the Vedas or the knowledge books of India. Vastu Shastra can be defined as a way of life. How you sit, how and where you sleep, how you start the day, how you orient, how you eat your food, how you study, how you teach your children. Every aspect of your daily life from the time you get up to the time you go to bed is defined as Vastu.

(It is said that the temple will be able to accommodate over 20,000 devotees at a time and is said to house a museum, a library and a research center. The Ram Mandir will be a grand structure, with a central sanctum sanctorum housing the idol of Lord Rama. The temple will also have several other shrines and mandapas, as well as a large courtyard and a garden. The inauguration ceremony for Ram Mandir is set to begin on January 16, 2024. Lord Ram Lalla’s consecration is scheduled for January 22, 2024.)

For the interested students of Vastu, I wish to share the classical and authoritative works on Vastu Shastra. The epics Ramayana and Mahabharata contain description of cities with multistoried buildings with spacious balconies and porticoes. It is said that the site plan of Ayodhya city was similar to the plan found in the great architectural text Manasara.

In the Mahabharata, mention is made of a number of houses that were built for the kings who were invited to Indraprastha for the Rajasuya Yajna of King Yuddhistira. Sage Vyasa says that these houses were as tall as the peaks of Kailasa mountains, perhaps, meaning that they stood tall and majestic. The houses were free from obstructions, had compounds with big walls, and their doors were of uniform height and inlaid with numerous metal ornaments.

(It is relevant to note that the largest and most magnificent sacred Ram Mandir construction is coming up in Ayodhya in an area of about 70 acres land. The construction is being overseen by the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust, a body set up by the Supreme Court of India. It is said that the temple has a blend of traditional and modern construction January 2024

TOOLS & TECHNIQUES

CHARTS OF THE UK: A NEW METHOD OF DASA ANALYSIS Gordon Brennan Gordon Brennan was born in London, UK. He holds a BA in Modern Languages and has also studied Sanskrit for 40 years. Study of Vedic Astrology started 30 years ago with Geoffrey Pearce. In 2011 he gained the qualification of Jaimini Scholar under his teacher Sanjay Rath. He is the Secretary of the British Association for Vedic Astrology and has taught Vedic Astrology for 20 years. He imports astrology books from India to the UK for sale online under the name Vedic Book Services. His main study is Mundane Astrology. Other interests are Advaita Philosophy and gardening.

Some years ago there was a meeting in London at which my teacher Sanjay Rath showed his students a different way of reckoning any Dasas. This applies after the first whole cycle has ended. At that event, using Narayana Dasa the birth chart of the UK was recalculated after 144 years and a new chart was used to examine the UK from 1945.

If you examine the start of the 1st World War without making any new calculation then the rolled on Dvadasottari Dasa would give Ra/Ju/Ra to be read from the UK’s 1801 chart, which is shown here. I use Chitrapaksha Ayanamsa, but this would be about the same in Lahiri. The Rahu Antar Dasa goes from mid-July to mid-September 1914. To understand the nature of the Dasa better you can refer to the original Ra/Ju/Ra, which was in 1802, when Rahu Jupiter began with the signing of the Treaty of Amiens in March. This was a time of peace and prosperity, not war. War did start again in Europe in 1804, but that was in Rahu Ketu, reversing matters after the Rahu Jupiter period had finished.

I have tried using this with many different Rasi and Narayana Dasas and found that every time it worked well and much better than the usual method of just carrying on with the same Dasa sequence. The method of calculation is quite simple. It is to retain the position of the Sun as it is in the original chart when the Dasa cycle of the chart has finished, and calculate a new cycle. With Vimshottari that would be another 120 years. If you retain the Sun at the degree it is in the original chart, then it is like using a Varshaphal chart 120 years later and basing the Dasa sequence on that.

Mercury is the Amatya Karaka, who likes to do business. If you use this chart with its original Dvadashottari Dasa sequence after 1913 then it will give you a very strange understanding of astrology because Ra/Ju/Ra Dasa does not show war at all.

The Sun represents the soul or the essential part of the being. It is the same for a humans or any being. All of the planets revolve around the Sun, but if the Sun moves to a different position in the chart, then a different being is indicated there, not the original one. You should keep the Sun where it is to calculate the Dasas beyond the first whole cycle. The Sun’s position in the original chart will not change according to precession. I am going to show the UK’s chart using Dvadasottari Dasa, which is 112 years long. You can use Dvadasottari if the Navamsa Lagna is in a sign of Venus. In the 1801 chart the Navamsa Lagna is in Taurus. January 2024

General Predictions

identity, so these planetary changes will be beneficial to us, no matter how we feel individually.

As we enter the New Year 2024, my best wishes for happiness, abundance, good health, and evolution are with you and your families!

In the sidereal zodiac, Saturn will remain in Aquarius throughout 2024, which bodes well for changes that touch the collective unconscious. Also, we’ll likely experience growing pains, as Saturn in Aquarius will bring maturity, and remind us that—sacrifice, hard work, and cooperation will bring long term benefits not only for ourselves, but also for future generations.

This year will bring us both tidings and sobering changes. Predictably, some astrological signs will navigate well, while others will most likely benefit from the many astrological remedies, recommended as usual at the end of this article.

This Saturnine placement will also favor many innovative industries, AI, networks, and medical and pharmaceutical businesses, which will make huge gains.

In 2023 we’ve been saddened, heartbroken for the innumerable human beings who suffered, and those who lost their lives to wildfires, earthquakes, floods, and wars. In 2024, humanity will continue to be challenged by similar news.

However, the severe aspects of Saturn on Aries, Leo and Scorpio (signs ruled by planets inimical to Saturn, and the natural 1st, 5th, and 8th astrological houses) point to a stern reality: leaders may not be able to find political solutions to our problems. Financial setbacks and tough policies will be further exacerbated by lies, as much information will be hidden from the masses. But the transformation cannot be stopped and there is a mass awakening to a new and better reality.

However, at this time, God loving and charitable individuals who want evolution can experience a positive, epic transformation. We have the predictions of Swami Ramalingam, an ascended master and Tamil Siddha, who turned his body into light in 1874 and said he would return in January 2024 on the full Moon day of Thai Pusham.

Both Saturn and Jupiter show that we’ll need to take responsibility for our lives, our actions and experiences. And no doubt, those with a deep connection to the divine will be the happiest people in 2024.

Whether you want to take this symbolically or literally, the energy on the Earth is said to be undergoing a major shift at this time. This is also the prediction of my teacher, Dr. Pillai, also a Tamil Siddha master, who said we are indeed entering Satya Yuga, even though this change will not be equally experienced by all.

As I’ve been saying for the last two years, large group meditations, group prayers, and fire rituals to the divine will go a long way to protect us and the Earth.

Vedic astrology is arguably the most accurate predictive system today and can now act as a guide and reminder of the most important reason we incarnated on Earth at this time: we have chosen to experience our divine January 2024

Introduction

meteorological departments remain hesitant to fully embrace Vedic astrology in their analyses. However, unbound by their endorsement, the timeless wisdom of Varahamihira continues to sound a clarion call.

Nature’s intricacies often elude complete understanding, even with advanced technological progress in weather forecasting unpredictable climatic upheavals continue to take us by surprise. The catastrophic 2015 South India floods, triggered by heavy rainfall during the annual northeast monsoon, underscore this point vividly. Chennai to Cuddalore, a vast coastal expanse, was flooded by 340 mm of rain in a single day, submerging Chennai in a century’s worst flooding and prompting its declaration as a disaster zone. Subsequent research attributed these catastrophic floods to the extreme El Niño conditions of that year, highlighting a link between such climatic events and natural phenomena. However, post-event realizations offer little solace in the face of substantial loss to life and property.

With predictions of a forthcoming late 2023 El Niño period, anticipated to adversely impact rainfall patterns across the USA, Indonesia, Australia and India, this article delves into the effects of El Niño, its potential consequences for 2024’s rainfall, and the insights that mundane planetary positions offer for effectively navigating this climatic phenomenon.

What is Elnino South Oscillation? Life on Earth is marked by cyclical variations, from day and night to the four seasons and the ebb and flow of tides in the sea. While many of these variations occur within relatively short periods, some cycles have far-reaching impacts on our planet. El Niño Southern Oscillation, also known as ENSO is a periodic fluctuation (i.e., every 2–7 years) in sea surface temperature (El Niño) and the air pressure of the overlying atmosphere (Southern Oscillation) across the equatorial Pacific Ocean.

In contrast, Vedic Astrology emerges as a promising discipline capable of anticipatory predictions for intense rainfalls. Guided by the intricate movement of celestial bodies, every terrestrial occurrence, from rain to floods and earthquakes, can potentially be forecast. Varahamihira’s magnum opus, the Brihat Samhita, stands as a treasure trove of predictive insights into natural disasters. Varahamihira’s meticulous observation of planetary motions laid the foundation for early meteorology, enabling the early prognosis of life-threatening catastrophes. Despite the reasonable accuracy demonstrated by eminent astrologers like Dr. B.V. Raman in forecasting such devastating events, the scientific community and governmental January 2024

El Nino means ‘little boy’ or ‘Christ child’ in Spanish. The phenomenon was thus named because it was first recognized by South American fishermen in the early part of the 17th century. The events, i.e., warm waters in the Pacific Ocean, tended to occur in December, hence, the name was chosen. In the Pacific Ocean, under normal conditions, the winds blow along the equator from East to West. This is 33

NOTABLE HOROSCOPE

NETAJI SUBHAS CHANDRA BOSE – ASTRO PORTRAIT OF A GREAT VISIONARY PATRIOT Dr. E. S. Neelakantan Dr. E. S. Neelakantan was born on 5th August 1967 in Kerala, India. He developed an interest in Astrology by reading the works of Dr. B. V. Raman. He learnt Astrology in a formal way under Prof. K V Seshadrinatha Sastri, and for his thesis on Medical Astrology, he was awarded Ph.D., by Sri Chandrasekarendra University, Kancheepuram, in 2005. He is a recipient of the “Nostradamus Award” instituted by Express Star Teller for his accurate forecasts. He is the author of a textbook on “Asktakavarga” in which he has lucidly brought out the fundamental principles of the Ashtakavarga System of Prediction.

Whenever we think of India’s freedom struggle we are reminded of the martyrs and freedom fighters who sacrificed everything they had to secure freedom for India from Colonial rule, of which two stand out, viz., Mahatma Gandhi and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. They had the same vision but chose to pursue two different paths. For Gandhiji, non – violence was the weapon of the strong but for Bose, the end purpose was supreme and the means adopted could be justified, if the goal was right. The ideology of Bose was an amalgam of nationalism, combined with socialism along with adoption of fascist means to reach the goal.

According to Dr. B.V.Raman, the effects of this yoga make the native fond of pleasures, humanitarian in outlook, blessed with wife and children, righteously inclined, doing good deeds and learned in sciences. Further Dr. Raman says “Where the planet or the house is not powerful, results attributable to the yoga cannot happen but only traces of them will be present. Where Sankha Yoga is present, the sixth lord also becomes beneficial in as much as by causing the yoga, he must also be capable of producing the good results of this Yoga in his Dasa or Bhukti. But still the blemish due to the sixth lordship must express itself by way of the native suffering from the machinations of debts, diseases or enemies”. How Dr. Raman’s views seem totally applicable to the chart of Bose, we will see in the course of this article. Again Rahu in a Kendra or Trikona having the association of a Kendra or Trikona Lord is by itself a Raja Yoga. Mark the position of Rahu in 10th with the Sun. This makes Rahu a Raja Yoga Karaka as per Laghu Parasari.

To Janakinath Bose and Prabhavati Devi, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose was born as their ninth child at Cuttack on 23rd January, 1937 at 12:15PM. Looking at Bose’s chart, we understand that he was born in Aries Lagna with the Moon in Virgo in the asterism, Uttaraphalguni. We have three malefics – Sun, Rahu and Ketu in quadrants, a benefic Mercury in quadrant and another benefic Jupiter in a trine, typically making this a Madhyayur Yoga Jathaka. From Lagna, the Lagna – cum – 8th lord Mars is in a fixed sign. From the Moon - sign, Lagna Lord Mercury is in a movable sign with 8th Lord Mars in a fixed sign which confirms our earlier hypothesis that Bose would live only for about 40 – 50 years of age.

Trilochana Yoga is formed when Sun, Moon and Mars are in mutual trines. One can see this yoga in the chart of Subhas Chandra Bose. This made him a celebrity in India and abroad and he was also a terror to his enemies. In Bose’s chart lagna is in a movable sign and 4 planets occupy movable signs. This made Bose intellectually mobile; he was not averse to travel and his life was a continuous struggle without having a fixed home anywhere for him. The presence of Ketu in the 4th and the lord of the 4th in the 6th also fortifies this view. After his early schooling, he moved to Raveshaw

YOGAS IN BOSE’S CHART To know about “Sankha Yoga”, one can read the book, 300 Important Combinations by Dr. B.V. Raman. This yoga is formed when the lords of 5th and the 6th are in mutual quadrants and the Lagna lord is strong. January 2024

PREDICTIVE ASTROLOGY

RAHU CENTRIC THEORY, PART-1, UNDERSTANDING RAHU Dr. Nemani Venkata Raghunatha Rao Dr. Nemani Venkata Raghunatha Rao is from Parvatipuram (Near Vizag), India and lives in San Francisco, USA. He has been practicing Vedic Astrology since 2002. A doctorate in Business Management by profession. His Jyothish Teachers are: H. Ramadas Rao, Pt. Sanjay Rath, Pt. Dakshinamoorthy Ramasamy, Swami Omkar and Madhu Babu Prakhya. He has received JyotishVisharada from the Council of Vedic Astrology (CVA), USA and he can be reached via email: RaoN1008@Gmail.com.

I am writing these series of articles because of my sheer desire to share my understanding on “Rahu centric theory and principles”, which I gained from Sri Hemant Trivedi Ji’s earlier writings and also my private discussion with him on this subject several years ago.

People say that you are the enemy of Sun and Moon, but in true sense, you are just playing with them. No one can separate you and Moon/you and Sun. You were born in Rohini Nakshatra and Sun finds himself mighty in your birth Nakshatra, and Rohini is but the Nakshatra owned by Moon. So how can anyone say that they are your enemies? Sun gets exalted in Mesha (Aries) where you have your first Nakshatra Ashwini (Nakshatra lord as Ketu).

I have used these principles and found to be working well, as a complimenting method to validate in determining timing of events. Having said that, in this article I will be introducing some key characteristics of Lord Rahu / Planet Rahu.

I bow to Almighty Ganapathy the God of obstacles and Krishna (Black) the Vishwa Swaroopa and I am writing my work on Rahu. I chose both Ganapathy and Krishna to pray because both of them are nothing but Rahu (Rahu/Ketu are one and the same too from this perspective).

You lord over Tamas Guna the eternal darkness, you are the witness to everything. All senses are ruled by you, all perceptions, all perceptive powers and organs of perceptions are ruled by you. Only you, due to your perceptive powers, can appreciate, smell, can describe beauty, can describe the taste, can experience texture, can hear sound and can speak. If you are not kind, you will not allow anyone to breath and you are at the base of all attraction. If your help is not there as a lord of Chemistry and chemical reactions, a man and a woman would not be pulled to each other by unknown force. You are the potential power in everything.

Krishna, the black cosmos, beyond time and space, you are all attractive, you are magnetic, you pull everyone unto you and to you. You are the seed of the creation; cause of the destruction lies within Brahmanda (Cosmos). The time and space are mere manifestations of your power only.

You are the black hole of the cosmos and the mouth of Krishna as you engulf everything whole like a snake devours its prey without chewing. You are the Yoni from where the life comes out. That is why God is known as Bhaga-Wan, where Bhaga is the Yoni. You are the Yoni and Linga which seeds the egg.

You are the Kaala; you are the birth of everything and you are the death. You are at the middle of everything, Brahmanda’s, planets and Nakshatras etc., and they are stringed with you at the middle of everything like the thread of a Mala (garland) with beads.

O Rahu, you are Bhaga-Wati, you are both Shiva and Shakti, and you are the Kaala and Mahaakaala.

Welcome to this monthly series where you will learn the fundamentals of Astrology in a structured manner. In the previous month’s issue of The Astrological eMagazine (December 2023), the remaining measurements of time as per Vedic Astrology were covered i.e., Thithi, Paksha, Masa, Ritu, Ayana, Samvatsara and Saka. We will now focus on Panchangam.

calculated and encapsulated in one place called the Panchangam. Hence, that is how Panchangam is our interface to what’s happening in the universe.

Panchangam is a Hindu Calendar - A calendar for the entire year starting from the Hindu New Year till the next Hindu New Year. But is Panchangam just a calendar? From an English calendar, we only get to see the day and date. But the Panchangam is our interface to universe. A mathematical interface. A scientific interface. Picture 2: Noted in Panchangam

Here’s what I mean. When I say Universe, I am talking about the celestial objects that influence us such as the Sun, Moon, Planets and Nakshatras. Unlike an English calendar which represents just dates of the year, Panchangam helps us align with nature.

If you look at our culture, Panchangam played a very important role in our daily routine. The day started by referring to the Panchangam to know the Thithi, Vara, inauspicious time such as Rahu Kalam, etc. It was also a cultural practice where the head of the house not only referred to the Panchangam but also read it out loud before the daily prayers. How did this help? Why was he doing this?

Picture 1: Panchangam Example

Picture 3: Panchangam Sravanam

We visually observe the time - when Sun rises or Sun sets, Moon’s orbit in the form of Thithi, Eclipses, etc. There are many more such occurrences in the universe which we cannot see, and all of this is meticulously January 2024
