Do Not Insult Innocents After sending the Pandavas for vanavasa (life in the forest), Duryodhana was gripped by a wicked thought. He wanted to go with all paraphernalia to the place where they were staying and show off, making them green with envy. Possessed by this thought and displaying all pomp and show, Duryodhana set out and on the way, wished to indulge in water sport in a pond in the forest. However, he was blocked by the gandharvas (celestial beings) guarding it. In a bitter battle that ensued, Duryodhana was defeated and captured. Coming to know of this, Yudhisthira, who was somewhere nearby, got Duryodhana released from the gandharvas through Bhima and Arjuna, and advised him not to indulge in such things in future.

Historical and ancient treatises such as Ramayana and Mahabharata contain incidents, events and information that convey how they successfully or otherwise managed people and events under various and often difficult circumstances. By and large, human behavior, actions and reactions over thousands of years have remained practically the same. The technique and technology may have changed today. Although the modern term "management" was not explicitly used or found in the historical stories, there is adequate and sufficient information that clearly conveys an implicit form of management that has been going on for thousands of years from time immemorial.
What is Management? What exactly is Management ? The simplest definition of management is the way to deal or handle people, events and responsibilities to accomplish an objective. The term management has become a commonly used term in modern business, primarily as applied to financial and other material gains. In the earlier periods, moral and ethical considerations were the basis for the proper management of people and events. The term "ethics" commonly relates to the principles of conduct or behavior that governs an individual or a group of individuals. The term "morals" imply modes of individual conduct. They are generically and collectively identified as " values". It is not surprising that the terms "ethics" and "morals" are often interchangeably used. Because the two words may have similar meaning in certain usage, they may some times cause confusion to some people, However, most people understand what exactly they mean when they use the term "ethics" or/and "morals". The management in the earlier centuries came under the broad umbrella of "Dharma". Dharma embodies nearperfect management but values is not identical to it but similar to Dharma. The values are the fundamental foundation of management. Values, as they relate to management are by-and-large time independent.
