How to Use Pyramids in Vastu Shastra | Bangalore Niranjan Babu It is a fact that the shape of structures influence the flow of energy from the universe. The energy from Shikara or Pyramid help in enhancing the overall quality of our life. Traditional Indian architecture is extremely simple and straight forward. The simple techniques of construction were utilized to build some of the glorious and magnificent buildings that have with stood the test of time. Structural elements like columns and beams were carefully integrated within the buildings to meet the needs of religious and cultural traditions. The vast freedom available to the sthapaka and sthapathi in the design of temples and other spiritual buildings resulted in the development of overwhelming wealth of architectural elements, variety of sculptural forms and decorative exuberances that has become the everlasting symbol of Indian Temple Architecture.

Shikara - The doorway to divine energy The shikhara remains the most outstanding element of the temple. The prakaras or the walls surrounding the garbhagriha were built around the whole complex and were oriented to the cardinal directions. These enclosures had elaborate and magnificent gateways (gopurams) that led the devotees into the sacred courtyard. A temple is the seat of divinity and is also a sacred institution that aims at giving mental and physical solace to the devotee. The Garbhagruha (Garbhagudi) or sanctum sanctorum encompasses the center or the nabhi of the superstructure. From the square shape of the Garbhagruha to the finial (which is a point) is the shikara. This curved form is identified in modern times as the pyramid. The shikara normally refers to the superstructure of the sanctum sanctorum and is the most important part of the temple. The pyramidal superstructure has a number of storeys. The shikara can be a square, circular, hexagonal (6 sides) or octagonal (8 sides). The vertical growth of Shikara is also sometimes used to designate the whole superstructure of the temple. The term Shikara is frequently mentioned at several places in the great epics Ramayana and Mahabharatha when referring to the 'Prasada' or temple. While the shikara generally refers to the curvilinear vertical growth of the sanctum sanctorum, the gopurams or gate towers refer to the gateways to the various enclosures and a temple. These are also pyramid shaped and the cross-section is reduced as they go up.

Three Important Parts of a Shikara Generally the pyramidal superstructure has four or eight triangles joined if the garbhagriha was square (or rectangular) and round shaped if the sanctum sanctorum was circular. The superstructure was solid or hollow. The shikara generally comprises of three parts: The astrological emagazine

Srila Prabhupada Reflecting on Half a Century Tattvavit Dasa

Tattvavit Dāsa recently edited a history of Śrīla Prabhupāda’s Kåñëa-Balarāma Temple in Vrindavana, entitled Vrindavana Is My Home, by Daivīśakti Dāsī. He also helped Jayādvaita Swami with the e-book version of the book Vanity Karma: Ecclesiastes, the Bhagavad-gītā and the Meaning of Life, published this September. Tattvavit blogs at tvdas.tumblr.com and has compiled his written articles and book reviews on his blog.

ho was Srila Prabhupada, new in America fifty years ago? A hero. Who is he now for me?

feel like doing research, putting his father’s name into Google or delving into archives. What he wanted, rather, was to assemble a picture of his father” from memory. Disciples ought to be able to say what their guru is for them, what part of their personality they owe him. How did our separate cultures interface? How did my background shape my involvement in and understanding of his movement? Prabhupada turned sixty-nine going to America by sea. In my town in Minnesota, it was summer and I was nearly fifteen. Our baseball team practiced most mornings. The town has a golf course and a public swimming area next to an arrow river. After seeing the Beatles on TV, in 1964, we boys grew longhair. I delivered a Minneapolis newspaper to houses, sometimes stopping at St. Mary’s Villa to see my maternal grandmother, who, after outliving my grandfather, would die there.

In Tim Parks’s story Reverend, I read about a sixtyyear-old Englishman looking back thirty years to recall his deceased father, a clergyman: “He didn’t

Prabhupada’s thirty-five-day ocean crossing brought on two heart attacks. He dreamed of Lord Krishna telling him not to fear, assuring him of protection. In his diary he wrote about coming to the West to teach in English, just to execute his guru’s order. On September 19 he reached New York, a grandfatherly gentleman far from home, and so poorly accommodated in Manhattan for nine months that today people admire his patience and valor.

Reprinted from Back to Godhead, the magazine of the Hare Krishna Movement, November/December 2015.

By risking his life when most men retire, Prabhupada demonstrated a devotee’s unselfishness. A devotee – happy having Krishna – knows perfect happiness

our own. We have hung our name board/signboard upon it. It has become the cause of all misfortunes. Rama is praying to Gurus Vasishtha and Visvamitra to help him to get rid of his ego. He says that he having studied so much and yet feels so inferior. Ego is the cause of all mental frailties and failures. Children keep a big target of scoring 99 marks and get only 19. When they lose confidence, you must give them courage. Tell them it is all in God’s hands and the next time they will do better. If you blame them that they are responsible for the failure, they will go into depression. In business, studies, profession one can face failure. The reason for failure is ego. Once the person develops the conviction that God is in charge and he is only a tool in God’s hands, he succeeds in his efforts. Does a car, camera, or automobile ever shed tears that it has been set aside for not functioning properly? Do not think that you have to behave like a lifeless object. No. There is great happiness in that feeling. The greatness of all functioning belongs to the conscious energy within us. During Navaratri, specks of kumkum are placed on JUNE 2018
